Phase one of the Gold Star Memorial Trail (GTMT) opened in November 2018. The non-motorized trail can be used by the public year-round for running, walking, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing. The 10-foot-wide 2.1-mile paved trail starts in Mayville’s Theiler Park off Hwy TW and is mainly located along Hwy 28 to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitors Center. The GSMT is dedicated to all Wisconsin military members who gave their lives for their country. The original concept of the trail was to be built in memory of two soldiers from Mayville, one from Horicon, and three from Beaver Dam. The trail was adopted by Dodge County as part of its park department.

route (phase 4). This route is marked with signs and goes from Palmatory Point on city streets to the west side of Horicon to Whitty Park, which will serve as the connection point for the next phase of the project from the City of Horicon to the City of Beaver Dam. The Horicon to Beaver Dam phase is currently in the planning stages. Donations for future trail phases and other trail enhancements can be made to Friends of Dodge County Parks, in care of the Gold Star Memorial Trail, P.O. Box 72, Juneau, WI. 53039. More information and updates are available at GoldStarMemorialTrailWI.org. £ ¢ 151

The ultimate concept of the GSMT is to connect the City of Mayville to the City of Beaver Dam through additional phases of the project. Currently, the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center trails do not permit bike riding. However, walking a bike on the southern Bachhuber Trail through the Horicon Marsh will get bikers to Palmatory Point, which then connects to the City of Horicon GSMT

MAYVILLE Limestone School museum 215 North Main Street Mayville, WI 53050 920-387-2593 Open 1st and 3rd Sundays each month May - October |1:30pm - 4:30pm In 1857-1858, after almost ten years of existence in a small frame schoolhouse, the people of Mayville decided to build a larger school to accommodate a growing population. A stone structure forty by sixty feet was erected, which was at that time one of the finest school buildings in the state. White limestone used for the school building came from local area stone quarries. Edward J. Foster, Ernst A. Muzzy, R.S. Chapman, and Miss Adra Reynolds were the first teachers in the new building.

In 1876, because of the growing population due to the success of the local iron smelting industry, a seventyfoot addition, nearly identical in design to the original building, was added on the south end. Local mason Friedrich Fischer, was the master builder. A new pillared portico and cupola gave it a grand statehouse appearance. The original school bell, donated by T. Sherin in 1857, was moved to the new tower and rang out for many years. This bell is now on display inside the building. In 1890, the school board decided to add steam heat to the school building. In 1937, as part of a WPA project, the area beneath the school was excavated for a full basement with two large rooms and indoor toilets. Mayville’s “White Limestone School” building was used as a public school for 121 years, from 1857-1964 and 19671981. From 1880-1898, the school served as both the grammar school and high school. The first high school principal was J. M. Turner. In 1883, after a three-year course of study, Emma Garling, Addie Williams, and Rudolph Sauerhering were the first graduates. In 1968, due to some deterioration, the cupola was removed from the building. In 1997, 29 years later, a replica of the original 35 foot tall cupola was restored to the building. This restoration project was financed by Ted Bachhuber and was dedicated in his memory. Ted passed away March 3, 1997. In 2007, following a fundraiser the museum replaced the plywood surrounding the cupola due to rotting wood. 14

For a period of time after the school closed in 1981, the Mayville Chamber of Commerce had their office located in the building. In March of 1982, the White Limestone School Restoration Corporation was formed. The Articles of Incorporation were signed by George Walk, president: Thomas Zuelsdorf, vice-president; Mary Ann Treichel, secretary, and Evaline Boeck, treasurer. In February of 2000, the name was officially changed to the “Mayville Limestone School Museum, Inc.” The Limestone School Building has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1976. In 2007, the museum proudly celebrated the 150th birthday of the building. Museum Exhibits include: Iron Country; this exhibit features the iron mining and smelting history of Dodge County. Edgar G. carriage factory museum

1 North German Street, Mayville, WI 53050 www.mayvillehistoricalsociety.org Free Admission Open 2nd and 4th Sundays each month May - October from 1:30pm - 4:30pm The museum of the Mayville Historical Society occupies what once was the home and workplace of John Hollenstein and family. Hollenstein came to the Mayville area in 1873, where they worked a small farm. Hollenstein started making wagons and carriages with blacksmith William Albrecht in a building on North Main Street.

Hollenstein set up his own wagon and carriage business, erecting a factory east of his home. He operated his shop until 1908, and then sold it to his son, John Hollenstein Jr., who continued the business until 1941. Anton Jagow purchased the factory building in 1945. He made and repaired farm wagons, built wooden truck bodies, wooden folding chairs and other items. Algot Streed bought the building in 1953 and ran the tool and die operation there until 1967. Then James Gilboy purchased the facility but never occupied it. Ted and Grace Bachhuber donated funds to enable the Mayville Historical Society to buy the building. The Carriage Factory consists of the main factory building on the corner of Bridge and German Streets plus two additions to the north of the building. The two additions were originally for a blacksmith shop and power plant. The museum displays several wagons, carriages and sleighs made in the factory; in addition to these, we have an old bank interior (Knowles), military displays, a mounted eagle that Harley Davidson photographed for some of their advertising, printing press equipment, a dentist’s office, and a lot of Mayville marked items from yesteryear. We also have many pictures and maps showing the early history of Mayville.

Horicon marsh explorium

Guests will have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center in Horicon, Wisconsin. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point arrowhead, that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time. Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. 22

| Mayville • Celebrating 175 Years • 1845-2020

Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves. historic DOWNTOWN

Take a step back in time and imagine it is the turn of the Twentieth Century in Mayville. Picture the roads you are traveling are dirt, the sidewalks are wooden board-walks. The homes and businesses, with a little imagination, are as they appeared around 1900.

Keeping Mayville CoMfortable SinCe 1947

Since 1947, we’ve been providing this area with quality products from Lennox and other fine manufacturers. And offering quality product lines is just the beginning. Because no matter how well made a product is, the comfort, reliability and energy efficiency it provides depends on the company that stands behind that product.

mayville public library The Mayville Public library is a member of the Monarch Library System that incorporates all 33 libraries in Dodge, Ozaukee, Sheboygan and Washington counties. The library allows access to adult and children’s books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs, magazines, newspapers and more. The library also offers public internet access and Wi-Fi along with a variety of programs. How the library began - In the summer of 1904, Miss Lutie Stearns of the Wisconsin Free Library Commission had the idea that Mayville should have a public library. She addressed a meeting one evening in July, 1904, to arouse interest in starting a library. That evening a Library Association was formed, for the purpose of raising funds, a constitution was adopted and officers were elected. The library opened with 250 books, supplemented by German and English books from the Traveling Library. By June, 1905, there were 556 books of which 314 had been gifts.

The next move took place in December, 1927, when the library moved to 11 N. School Street. In 1938 the library was moved to quarters in the Joe Bachhuber building at 44 North Main Street. The new Mayville Public Library was one of Mayville’s finest achievements. In 1966 the fund raising campaigns got under way, bids were opened and contracts awarded in January of 1967, and the library moved to temporary quarters in the old bank building on the corner of Bridge and Main Streets. On February 18, 1968 from 1-4pm, the long awaited opening of the new library took place. Plans for a new library are once again happening in Mayville. The new building will offer all the library materials and resources that are currently available but will allow the library to expand programming for adults, teens and children.

In November, 1905, the library was moved into a larger room, on the ground floor of the building at 4 South Main Street. By 1913 the growth of the library again made it necessary to move to 130 S. Main.

THE MAYVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY The Mayville Public Library has been serving our community and the surrounding area since 1904.As a member of the Monarch Library System, we have access to 30 other libraries’ resources. Coffeehouse takes “local” to a new level with local...

“The Open Door Coffeehouse is the home away from home for local residents and those visiting. Its passion is to feature local brands and give back to the community. Its warm smells, friendly baristas, and welcoming environment hold a sophisticated-rustic feel, while holding a cup of delicious comfort in your hands. The comfort in your hands is Luna Coffee, a local roaster that is fair trade, with organic options. In their newly renovated location, you’ll find artwork, books, and food by members of the community. Enjoy a day in downtown Mayville, exploring the unique shops, eating at one of the impressive restaurants, walking along the river and ending your walk with and espresso (or non-coffee drink) at The Open Door”.
