Meet our new Executive Director,

Stephanie Miller-Lamb

Stephanie originally hails from Dubuque, Iowa, where she grew up with five siblings. Her parents, a now-retired physics professor and registered nurse, made the arts part of everyday life for their family in a house filled with music and art. Trips to concerts, art fairs, recitals, plays, galleries and museums were commonplace in the Miller home.

Stephanie did her undergraduate studies at La Crosse’s Viterbo College (now University), where she earned degrees in Technical Theatre and English and later a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Stage Management at the University of Iowa. She has held positions with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Cal Performances at UC Berkeley, and Hancher Auditorium at the Iowa Center for the Arts. After spending three years on the board of the ART Friends, Stephanie is honored to now be serving the organization in the role of Executive

Director. She and her spouse of 30+ years live in a historic home in Portage, where she also serves on the Historic Preservation Commission. In her free time, Stephanie enjoys gardening, riding her motorcycle and spending time with her spouse. Stephanie notes “This is an incredibly thrilling time! As the Al. Ringling Theatre celebrates the start of its next 100 years, it is experiencing well-deserved widespread acclaim. Through the power of social media, the theatre has come to the attention of new audiences across the United States as well

Contributed by Sauk County Historical Society In June 1915, Al. Ringling surprised everyone - including his architect and builder - by announcing that he wished to install a $9,000 pipe organ in his theater. The design change was placed in time, as it was still possible to build a room high above the auditorium to house the organ pipes and equipment. The original organ console, shown here in the middle of the tiny orchestra pit, could play itself if needed through the use of paper rolls much like a player piano. The original organ console was later replaced.

Contributed by Paul Wolter The high-relief plaster, decorative columns and murals inside the auditorium of the Al. Ringling Theatre transformed the shell of the theater into a Europeanstyle opera house. The Chicago artisans and artist who executed the work earned about $8 per day.

Contributed by Sauk County Historical Society By mid-July 1915, the exterior form of the Al. Ringling Theatre was rapidly taking shape. Terra cotta for the front facade was installed whenever there was a wall to attach to it. Behind the facade the steel beams and trusses for the auditorium roof were set in place with gin poles, one of which is visible in this picture.

Contributed by Bill Johnsen Scaffolding and risers set for the many artisans to reach the ceiling to design the murals above.

Contributed by Paul Wolter The molded plaster decoration of the Al. Ringling Theatre was manufactured and installed by the Architectural Decorating Company of Chicago. The catalog provided architects and designers a rich variety of molded plaster elements to choose from. The “choir boys from the foyer of the theater appear in the 1916 catalog second from the top page.

59 train cars of brick

In late June 1915, the citizens of Baraboo paused for an afternoon of speeches and testimonials to thank Al. Ringling for his gift of a new theater, which at the time was less than halffinished. While people were hopeful that Al. Ringling would live long enough to see his theater completed, community leaders must have felt relieved that they had properly lauded the showman while they had the chance. Construction workers most likely stopped work for the ceremonies but the break was only a minor pause in the rapid pace at which the theater was going up. In the month that followed, the public would see the front faรงade shoot up to the second story with the elliptical curve of the upper auditorium wall

rising behind. Masons, who had been on the job for several weeks, were busy using up 59 train carloads of brick that the building required. Even though there was very little wood used in the structure of the building, carpenters were constantly at work making forms for poured concrete floors and beams and building scaffolding for the masons. By mid-July, the project was ready for the skilled steel workers to return to lift and install the steel beams and trusses that would support the roof over the auditorium. Gin poles once again were used to carefully lift and maneuver the pieces into place. Masons also were busy placing terra cotta pieces on the front faรงade whenever there was a wall to attach it to. Made to look like stone, the terra cotta was made of glazed fired clay, with

each distinctive piece made in a mold so that identical pieces could be duplicated more easily by using the same mold over. The whole process was far cheaper than carving stone. The terra cotta pieces also were hollow, making them lighter and easier to work with. Terra cotta would be used to cover the faรงade of the theater and to dress the top of the visible portions of the elliptical brick wall surrounding the auditorium. While the terra cotta was only made to look like stone, the base of the faรงade of the theater was covered in real granite from New Hampshire. By late July, the faรงade was taking shape and people could discern where the ground-floor shops, with offices above, would be to the left of the entrance and see the graceful outline of the opening for the French doors for the ladies

lounge on the second floor. And while the great arch high above the entrance was yet to be installed, more decorative pieces of terra cotta like the capitals of the double pilasters flanking the front doors could be admired. As the summer of 1915 continued, the theater took on the final outlines of its exterior form. While the faรงade was promising to be elegant and beautiful, at least one of Barabooโ s three newspapers admonished its readers that the exterior would pale in comparison to the interior once it was finished. Readers would be able to judge this prophetic statement for its validity in four more months, when the theater was set to open. By Paul Wolter Sauk County Historical Society

Al. Ringling Theatre work uncovers historical gems

Congratulations on 100 Years!

Restoration work has cast a spotlight on previously unnoticed artistic touches throughout the theater. For example, lowering the chandelier to feet above the floor provided close-up looks at its braided tassles and other intricate flourishes. “That’s just workmanship,” Miller-Lamb said. “That’s craftsmanship.”

“Where Our Customers Send Their Friends”

Workers already have uncovered skylights above the theater’s second level, and replaced plaster stencils in the ladies’ lounge. Henry Ringling’s old office will be renovated to house staff offices and a board room.

S4175A Fox Hill Rd., Baraboo Complete Collision Repairs

Emptying that office turned up several long-forgotten artifacts. These include a vintage adding machine, historic photos and a 1947 ledger showing transactions

between the Ringlings and local firms such as Pointon Heating and Hill’s Electric, businesses that still exist — and were hired to help with the restoration project. “Nobody threw out anything,” MillerLamb said. “We’re really fortunate.”

Restoration Complete!

Looking up into the dome you’ll find restoration of the ceiling murals and center medallion complete. The renowned clouds have returned to share the blue sky.

Large areas on the top concourse that had missing or damaged plasterwork are now beautiful, with the newly cast plaster so expertly tied into the old that it is nearly impossible to tell what is original from what has been restored.

Columns throughout the auditorium have returned to their golden splendor and the boxes have also received coats of gold.

In the area of building mechanics, a new fire detection and suppression system has been laid in throughout the theatre, the concessions area and adjoining theatre space.

We are now able to offer programming in comfort yearround, thanks to the new HVAC system.

The original lighting fixtures have been rewired and have undergone restoration.

In the second floor offices, linoleum tile has been removed and the French doors have been refurbished. High efficiency, double paned glass has been installed, which will make those offices habitable again.

At the very top of the theatre, the smoke towers have new metal exteriors and the interior workings have been repaired.

Beautiful new carpeting has been installed throughout the theatre, and brand new seats will provide patrons with a more comfortable experience for productions, films and high-quality musical entertainment.
