Boating
S
ome families like to hit the pavement during the summer for a road trip. Others prefer to hit the water. Boating is one of the most popular summer activities.
With the diverse array of boats you can purchase, there is no shortage of activities for water enthusiasts to enjoy during the year’s hottest months. If you’re considering purchasing, the type of boat you select should be influenced by how you plan to use the watercraft. Going to do any fishing in the ocean? Looking to leisurely cruise around your local lake? How and where your boat will operate can determine what type of purchase you should make. For the most part, the types of boats on the market are classified as cruising, fishing or watersports vessels. Cruisers are for boaters seeking to spend time relaxing or entertaining on the water. Fishing boats are more open and allow for more front deck space to make it easier to fish. Watersports vehicles are equipped with strong towing capacity and a design to accommodate water skiers and wakeboarders. Here are the most common boats within the three categories listed above:
Cruising Boats The most popular types of boats to fall under this description are sailboats, pontoon boats and trawler boats. Each has its own distinct characteristics, but riders tend to enjoy sitting in the bow across the board because of the great view, nice breeze and open platform. Among these options, pontoon boats may just be the most popular boat in the world. These types of watercraft rely on pontoons — resembling large tubes — to float. They offer wide decks and couch-like seating that make them perfect for some Saturday afternoon grilling while you take breaks from cannonballing into the lake.
Fishing Boats Bass boats are the most widely known and purchased fishing boats because of their great access to shallow water and accommodations for multiple anglers. You can outfit your bass boat with your engine of choice depending on how much power you need for zipping across your
local lake. Lightweight aluminum fishing boats offer another great choice, especially if you’re in the sport of freshwater fishing in tight spaces. Center console boats also make for great fishing options because of their ability to handle offshore waters. If you’re planning on fishing for bigger catches on rougher waters, this is the type of boat for you.
Watersports Boats Designed for fishing and watersports, fish-and-ski boats are ideal for families who love having fun in the water. Most feature a spacious sun-pad area that can convert into a fishing platform. Other fun watercraft include wakeboard boats and jet boats, each of which offer ample seating and are known for their maneuverability in the water. Check with your local boat dealer to see what type of watercraft fits your needs this summer.

P
Fire Pits
eople have sat around an open fire outdoors for centuries. Not only does fire provide warmth and light, but also it offers a relaxing setting for conversation and socialization.
The outdoor fire pit has transformed the concept of backyard entertaining. Homeowners understand how a fire pit can add value to a home and make their yard an inviting place to be on a summer evening or a chilly autumn night. Outdoor fire pits are a relatively new creation that continue to grow in popularity. Once available strictly through specialty retailers, fire pits can now be found on the shelves of many home improvement and big box stores as well as online.
Fire pits can add a lot to a home’s exterior entertaining area. Some fire pit styles and materials will last longer than
others. Homeowners should assess their needs and the space available before choosing a fire pit for their home. First, homeowners must decide if they want a permanent or portable fire pit. If you are ready to make an enduring change to your yard and landscape, then a permanent fire pit is the way to go. These can be made of stone or brick and are often very durable. Permanent fire pits can be incorporated into landscape designs to create a professional patio look. They’re also some of the safer types of fire pits because they cannot be knocked over and the bricks or retaining wall construction provide a barrier around the fire. Portable fire pits are freestanding units that can be moved around the yard on a whim. They also can be loaded into the car and taken to a neighbor’s house or even to the beach. Portable fire pits are less expensive than permanent models, and some homeowners prefer a trial run with a portable pit before deciding to install a permanent structure.

Portable fire pits are made of metal and usually coated with a fireproof paint. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause the metal to rust or weaken, something homeowners should consider prior to purchase. Homeowners also must consider a fuel source. Wood is a common fuel source for fire pits. Wood can be inexpensive, especially when gathered from around the yard. However, a wood-burning fire will constantly have to be fed with new branches. If you want to have a roaring fire but don’t want to maintain it, then a gas-fueled fire pit is better. Natural gas fire pits can run off of a portable propane tank (think barbecue tank) or be directly connected to a home’s natural gas supply. Now you can decide on the style. Gas fire pits will give you a greater number of design options, but there are still plenty of choices with wood fire pits. From bowl-shaped pits to rectangular-shaped pits to barrelstyle pits to chimineas, there are designs to fit most preferences and size constraints.
Once you have chosen a fire pit, safety should prevail. Here are some tips to consider. ➤ Keep the fire pit away from the home and objects that can burn. Maintain a safe distance from the fire pit at all times. ➤ The best place to have the fire pit is on hard stone, cement or tile. Portable fire pits can be placed on patio stones in the lawn. ➤ Use a screen to keep embers and sparks from escaping during use. ➤ Keep children a good distance away from the fire pit and always supervise when the pit is in use. ➤ Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before going in for the night. ➤ Do not use any accelerants to make the fire bigger or light faster. ➤ Buy a vinyl cover to protect the fire pit from the elements when not in use.

The Open Road
iders must emphasize safety on the open road
Motorcycle enthusiasts in locales with cold winters may anticipate the warmer weather of spring and summer more than others, as it means they can pull their bikes out of their garages and get back on the open road. While riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience, the U.S. Highway Safety Authority notes that fatal crashes are much more likely to occur to motorcycle riders than automobile drivers. As the number of drivers and riders on the road continues to increase, it has never been more important for riders to practice motorcycle safety.
Be seen and heard Ever wonder why some motorcycles make so much noise? It’s to attract the attention of other motorists. Thanks to their small profiles, motorcycles can easily go unnoticed by motorists. Failure of other motorists to see motorcycles on the road is a chief contributor to collisions involving motorcycles.
While leather and denim may be the traditional uniform of motorcycle riding, synthetic materials that have reflective fabrics can improve visibility. Highly visible colors, such as orange and yellow, are good choices when on the road. Riders also can add reflectivity to existing gear with reflective tape. Many motorcycle riders, particularly those on Harley Davidsons, swap out stock exhaust pipes for ones that emit a louder decibel range. This helps other motorists notice them.
Use the right gear When a rider is on the open road, he or she doesn’t have the protection of a car frame to offer a buffer between the rider and the pavement should an accident occur. That is why it is crucial to invest in quality gear that can offer a certain measure of protection. A high-quality helmet that fits well is an important piece of safety equipment, as head and neck injuries can result in paralysis or fatalities. Pair the helmet with goggles or glasses with safety lenses. Durable nonslip gloves will help riders maintain a good grip on the handlebars, and boots can cover the ankles. Although it can be tempting to forgo long pants or jackets when the weather warms, doing so can lead to painful abrasions and road
burn should a fall occur. Invest in a leather jacket and pants or a highquality, durable and bright-colored material.
Additional safety precautions According to Allstate(R) Insurance, 46 percent of motorcycle crashes occur at intersections. Knowing this information can help riders make more informed choices on the road. Some other important safety precautions include:
Exercise extreme caution at intersections and only go through when safe. ■ Test the lights, brakes and turn signals before you make any trip. ■ Make sure the fuel and oil levels are at the correct levels. ■ Know your bike’s limits. ■ Follow the speed limit and the rules of the road, and do not weave in and out of traffic. ■ Don’t ride in blind spots, staying in spots where you are most visible to fellow motorists. ■ Always use turn signals. ■ Do not tailgate, as stopping distances for motorcycles, especially on slippery roads, can make stopping difficult. ■ Never drink and ride. Emphasizing motorcycle safety can make for an injury-free riding season. ■

Summer Camps
n the summertime, finding an outlet for children’s energy — and boredom — can be a challenge for parents. That’s why summer camps are a great option.
This type of summer recreation has been a mainstay for decades. Summer camps offer great opportunities for educational and recreational activities. They also teach social and behavioral skills through various programs, events and activities. If you’re looking for a summer camp in your area, there are a few questions you should ask before settling on the one that’s right for your children.
What kinds of camps can I find? No matter what type of interests your child has, it’s possible to find a summer camp to match. From traditional nature and horseback riding camps to science and sports clinics, there are organizations putting on amazing experiences for children of all ages. A great resource for checking on local and national camps is the American Camp Association. Through the organization, you can find out if a camp is accredited and its accreditation history.
Fish Tales
According to the ACA, an accredited camp has gone through an in-depth process to comply with 250 standards in health, safety and program quality. Knowing that your camp was committed enough to go through this intensive process can give you confidence that you’re sending your child to the right place.
Will My Child Be Homesick? Summer camp offers many life lessons and chances for socialization, but they also require an extended period of time away from home. For your child to truly enjoy camp, you’ll want to do everything you can

to prevent homesickness during their stay. If your children have spent plenty of nights away from home — maybe at a grandparent’s house — this likely will not be an issue for them. Talk this over with your child before signing them up for camp. Feel out their emotions toward being away from home for several
days or even weeks and try to sense cues of nervousness, tenseness or sadness. Many camps are staffed by professionals trained to handle these types of issues, so check with your camp to see what kind of measures they have in place to make sure your child has an exceptional summer camp experience.

Give the gifts that keep on grilling The summer celebration season is under way, and to help you find the perfect gift for the outdoor chef on your list the grilling experts at Broil King have put together a list of items for every type of grill master.
Wireless Thermometer A meat thermometer is an essential tool for any backyard chef. A wireless thermometer is a great option because it monitors cooking progress and lets you know when dinner is ready, allowing you to spend more time with guests. Look for a thermometer that offers a pre-programmed menu that allows the user to set meat type and doneness.

Wood Chips, Planks and Smoker Boxes Deep smoky flavors and fall-offthe-bone tenderness are hallmarks of traditional barbecue cuisine. Allow budding backyard chefs the chance to create those mouth-watering dishes at home using wooden planks, smoker boxes and flavored wood chips. From the pungency of hickory and mesquite to sweeter, more delicate apple and cherry, several different types of chips are available. Consider giving the chef a few different options, as many backyard chefs enjoy experimenting and crafting their own special blends.

Pizza Tools The high temperature and hot dry air on a grill are great for making an authentic pizza pie. A pizza stone is ideal for the grill because it provides insulation from direct flame and retains heat for crisp crusts. Staycation
N
o matter where you call you home, odds are there is a rich tourism hotspot in your neck of the woods waiting for you to explore it this summer.
Some of the greatest summer memories can be made in your own community when you choose to plan what many in the tourism industry call a staycation. These types of shorter, localized trips have become more popular over the years because they are inexpensive and offer as much fun as longer excursions.
Benefits of Staycations Local fairs, festivals, campgrounds and concert series are excellent
events that help you support your local economy by keeping your hard-earned dollars in the area. Another great benefit of the staycation is the ability to include more of your friends and family members in your summer adventure. While some in your social circle may not be up for traveling to Europe or even across the country, they may be more inclined to renting some local cabins or staying at a local campsite. After all, the more the merrier when it comes to summertime fun.

Enjoy Local History
If you’re having trouble figuring out where to spend your staycation, check with your city, county or state tourism bureau. Professionals within these organizations are experts in the local tourism scene and can help you uncover some of the most interesting opportunities for fun. Find the organization’s website to see if it posts an updated calendar of events. You also can find posts on social media about upcoming events and tourism-related information.
Do you have a rich historical landmark in your community? It is likely that local lodging and recreational activities aren’t far away. Check your local newspaper for advertisements or conduct a simple online search to find locations and rates for local tourism opportunities tied into historical events or figures. History-based staycations are both entertaining and enlightening — the perfect combination for summertime enjoyment.

Embrace an active outdoor lifestyle
B
lue skies and warm weather entice people to enjoy the great outdoors. For many people, few things are more enjoyable than soaking up some rays and breathing in some fresh air.
Moderate temperatures help make many outdoor activities that much more enjoyable. But even if the weather isn’t perfect, individuals can make the best of the situation and still get out of the house. Our area has many parks and a recreational trail, providing a perfect escape to the scenic rural countryside to relax or take part in one of many recreational activities. As the seasons of warm weather return, those itching to get outside can explore these entertaining outdoor activities.
Hiking Hiking is a great outdoor activity in part because it can be enjoyed by people of any age and just
about any fitness level. Hikers can work up from relatively short and flat trails to more intense vertical and varied hikes. Local parks, government preserves and rural areas offer plenty of places to walk and hike. When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed.

Biking Biking is another outdoor activity ideal for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Once you’ve learned to ride a bicycle, that ability stays with you, whether you ride a bike each day or haven’t taken one for a spin in years. Many towns and cities across the country have become much more bike-friendly in recent years, clearing space for biking paths and lanes even in the busiest metropolitan areas. And mountain bikers still have plenty of trails to traverse as well. Check that your bike is in good working order and that the chain is freshly oiled. Take your bike to a local cycling shop for a tuneup if necessary. Verify the fit of helmets, especially on children who may have grown since the most recent cycling season.
Horseback riding Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance,

strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with.
Remember to wear the right clothing, including long pants and boots, for riding. A hat can shade you from the overhead sun, while a helmet is adviseable for people new to the sport or those who want added protection. Always arrive early so that you can familiarize yourself with your horse and have him or her get to know you. Approach the horse from the front left side. Horses are prey animals and can be skittish by nature, so a firm, calm greeting can reassure the animal. These are just a few of the many outdoor activities people can enjoy when the weather warms up. Try taking exercise routines outdoors, such as running on a path instead of the treadmill. Swimming, walking, gardening, and sports activities are other fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
