SUMMER 2017

THIS WEEK IN THE DELLS

The geologic history of the Dells area can be divided into three parts. First , the Precambrian history, includes formation of igneous granitic rocks and volcanic rhyolites that formed ~ 1.75 billion years ago. Overlying these rocks is a thick (approx. 4,000 ft.) deposit of sandstone and 1,500 ft. of shale that were folded between 1.65 and 1.45 billion years ago. This folding event also resulted in the metamorphism of the sandstone to form the famous Baraboo Quartzite. The cause of the folding is unclear, but it may have been caused by a small microcontinent colliding with North America. The second part includes the 0.5 billion year old Late Cambrian layers composed of non-marine and marine sandstones and conglomerates that were primarily deposited in a warm tropical sea surrounding the elliptical ring of hills composed of resistant Baraboo Quartzite. During this time, Wisconsin was located near the equator, where tropical storms would be expected. The Cambrian conglomerate sits uncomfortably on eroded Precambrian Baraboo Quartzite. This erosional contact, called the Great Unconformity represents over 1 billion years of missing rock! The source of the boulders in the conglomerate was the underlying quartzite that was broken and tumbled by fierce tropical storms. The final chapter includes a glacial event that left behind rock debris transported from Canada several times during the last 1.8 million years, with the glacial maximum occurring ~18,000 years ago. About 14,000 years ago, ice from the Green Bay Lobe melted back, forming many small ice-dammed and moraine-dammed lakes that flooded river valleys and basins in the area. As dam failure occurred, rapid outflow from these lakes flowed down the lower Wisconsin River, allowing for downcutting along stream channels, forming many deep gorges carved into the soft underlying Cambrian sandstone. SUMMER 2017

EARLY EXPLORATION OF THE DELLS AREA

Wah-con-ja-z-gah (Yellow Thunder), photographed by H.H. Bennett in 1879.

Native Americans first lived in the Wisconsin Dells region over 12,000 years ago, hunting large elephant-like animals such as the now extinct mastodons and mammoths. The Dells region continued to be home to Native American groups as evidenced by villages, campsites, mound groups, and rock art. The physical evidence of early human presence such as stone tools, spear points, and pottery helps us understand what life what like in these ancient times. When Europeans first reached the Dells area, it was occupied by several groups including the Ho-Chunk and Ojibwe. These groups, including the Menominee, are still present in the region today and consider the area their ancestral homeland. The first Europeans to enter what is now Wisconsin were French explorers and fur traders from Canada. Jean Nicolet landed on the shores of Green Bay in 1634. Fifty years later, Sieur de la Salle claimed Wisconsin for France. A subsequent conflict arose between the French and the British fur traders which

eventually led to France relinquishing the area that included Wisconsin to Great Britain in 1763. The Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War, turned the region over to the dominion of the United States. Beaver hats, being waterproof and fashionable, made the trade of furs with Native Americans a lucrative business for nearly 200 years between 1650 to 1850. In autumn, traders would advance guns, ammunition and supplies to Indian hunters who would return to trade beaver pelts the following spring. French voyageur named the Wisconsin River in this area the “Dalles” which means “a swift stream of water running between high banks.” The “Dalles” eventually became the “Dells.” By the early 1800s, the local demand for fur was replaced by lead and lumber – both plentiful in Wisconsin. While there might have been some logging activity on the Wisconsin River earlier, the construction of Fort Winnebago near present day Portage, WI in 1832, signaled

the start of a vast lumber industry. By the late 1840s, lead production began to decline, but lumber had a long period of great economic and industrial growth for both Wisconsin and the nation. The removal of the Native Americans to reservations and the sale of cheap land made the area attractive to European immigrants. The population of Wisconsin jumped from 30,000 in 1840 to about 300,000 in 1850. In 1839 Robert Allen, a lumberman, saw an opportunity to capitalize on the river traffic and built the Dell House, a tavern and inn along the river, and the first European settlement in the Dells area. The city of Newport soon followed. The announcement as to the location of LaCrosse and Milwaukee Railroad’s bridge across the Wisconsin River resulted in the organization of Kilbourn City on June, 10, 1856. The name was later changed to Wisconsin Dells in 1931. Daniel J. Boehmke, Friends of H.H. Bennett Studio

MERRIMAC FERRY

The Merrimac Ferry is a must for your visit to the area. The free Merrimac Ferry is located on Hwy 113 across the Wisconsin River/Lake Wisconsin area between Okee and Merrimac. It is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from about April through November, depending upon the weather. Well over 200,000 vehicles travel on the Ferry a season. Bring your camera because you will see beautiful scenery and native wildlife to the area. This is the only free ferry in Wisconsin and the ride takes just about 7 minutes to cross the Wisconsin River to the other shoreline. Many people make a special trip to our area just to the ride the ferry on a summer afternoon. Not to mention, while you wait for the ferry

to arrive you can enjoy a cool summer treat of ice cream at the local shop or even enjoy a picnic lunch in the newly renovated park area. The Merrimac Ferry dates back to 1844, when Chester Mattson obtained a charter to provide ferry service at the present-day location. It was operational long before there was a marked road leading to or away from it. According to conflicting sources, Mattson charged either 35 cents or $1 to ferry a team and wagon across the river. The ferry was human-powered until around the turn of the century, when the first gasoline engine was added. In 1933 the toll was eliminated and The State of Wisconsin took over the ferry with the operation and maintenance now performed by the Columbia County

Highway Department. The first ferry was Colsac, a wooden ferry that had a capacity of 8 cars. It was replaced by the Colsac II in 1963, with a capacity of twelve cars. Launched on May 16, 2003, the current Colsac III cost $2.2 million to build and carries 15 cars across the river linking both Columbia and Sauk counties. The Colsac name is cleverly derived from both county names. Once you are on the ferry, get out of your car and take in the scenery of the Wisconsin River. Enjoy the gentle breeze during a crisp fall day as you take in all the wonderful colors along the trip across. We invite you to come to Columbia County and create your own memories on Wisconsin’s only Free Ferry Ride!

THE HO-CHUNK NATION AND CULTURAL TOURISM

Stand Rock Indian Ceremonial

The Ho-Chunk are the Native population in the area. During the Indian removal period in the mid to late 1800s, the Ho-Chunk were removed out of Wisconsin at the same time the Dells area was being settled by settlers. Ho-Chunk continued returning to their homelands and in 1881 Wisconsin passed a law that allowed Native Americans to purchase homesteads. These Ho-Chunk returning to the Wisconsin Dells region soon utilized the developing tourist industry as a means of economic survival.

H.H. Bennett capitalized on the romanticized idea of the “vanishing Indian and took photographs of Chief Yellow Thunder, among other Ho-Chunks, to sell to tourists. Bennett also sold bead work, baskets and other Native products in his store. From that point on, Ho-Chunks became involved in the tourist industry in Wisconsin Dells.

Indian Village became important places that contributed to Dells tourism and Ho-Chunk cultural identity. Cultural tourism provided a unique venue in the absence of reservation lands that provided public gathering places for Ho-Chunk in their ancestral lands. The identity of Wisconsin Dells tourism is deeply entwined with Ho-Chunk people.

Pay for displays of cultural performance was a vital source of income for Ho-Chunk performers. The Stand Rock Indian Ceremonial and the Dells Park

WISCONSIN DELLS... Waterpark Capital of the World!®

Family fun is what we are all about. For nearly 150 years families have been coming to Wisconsin Dells for the ultimate family vacation. At that time, they experienced a steamboat tour on the Wisconsin River and the beautiful scenery of the natural sandstone bluffs. Credited to our local photographer H.H. Bennett for creating beautiful images of local landscapes and waterscapes, including his famous photograph of jumping from bluff to bluff. Today visitors enjoy not only the waterscapes and beautiful landscapes, they also enjoy our world famous Waterparks. Did you know that the introduction of indoor waterparks was started here in Wisconsin Dells? The Polynesian Water Park Resort was the first property to introduce the indoor waterpark concept in 1989. It started with a sketch on a paper napkin after local business partners attended a waterpark convention in Texas. Today the Dells has more indoor and outdoor waterparks per capita then anywhere else on the planet. Here are the Numbers • More than 200 waterslides. • 16 million gallons of water. • America’s Largest Outdoor Waterpark - Noah’s Ark Waterpark is America’s largest waterpark, spanning 70 acres with five million gallons of water and three miles of waterslides. • America’s Largest Indoor/Outdoor Combination Waterpark Wilderness Resort’s indoor and outdoor waterpark space combined is 500,000 square feet or equal to 12 football fields. • Wisconsin’s Largest Indoor Waterpark - Kalahari Resort Waterparks is the largest indoor waterpark at 125,000 square feet. Rides includes extreme plunge slides, tube rides, racing speed slides, bowl drops, water roller coasters, indoor surf machine, massive wave pools and lazy rivers.
