ROBOTS

MAKE FOR

HAPPY COWS JANE FYKSEN

jfyksen@madison.com, 715-683-2779‌

BRILLION, Wis. – Chris Levash says he prefers managing cows, not people. That’s why the third-generation dairy farmer chose to expand the family farm by adding three DeLaval Voluntary Milking System robots. Robots aren’t late for work, he says, and they never call in sick. Levash returned to the farm after graduation from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a focus on broad-field social sciences. Now 29 years old, he farms near Brillion in Calumet County with his parents, John and Sheri Levash. His brother, Nathan Levash, and his sister, Shawna Levash, help parttime on the farm, as does his uncle, Joe Levash. The new milking stations were retrofitted into an existing facility and the former parlor holding area. The family broke ground on the project in October 2017 and began using it Jan. 2 of this year. They are hoping for a seven-year payback on the robots. The robots milk the family’s commercial herd of 180 Holstein cows, three times per day. Each robotic milker has a capacity to handle about 60 cows. “The cows adapted better than what we thought it was going to be,” Chris Levash said. “We trained them before we started.” Production is increasing; it averages about 75 pounds of milk per cow per day. Somatic cell count is decreasing. The robots are more consistent than the farm’s former high school crew, Levash said. With a robot cows are prepped and milked the same way every time. Cows are more comfortable and relaxed in a system that enables them to be milked as they wish, provided they meet computerized parameters. The guided-flow cow-traffic system guides cows to milking, feeding and resting areas. There are two See ROBOTS, Page 6

types of guided-flow systems – feed-first and milk-first, as at the Levash dairy. When a cow leaves the freestall area she passes through a pre-selection gate that determines if she’s eligible for milking. If so, she’s guided to the robotic milker. Cows coming out of the robots are funneled to the feed bunk. A milk-first system is generally thought to work best with economies demanding high production. At any given time, about a third of the herd is lounging in freestalls, a third is eating and a third is walking around. Timid cows have less competition using that method. Levash said their system enables them to put milkers on the cows by hand if something were to go wrong. He said he feels more secure knowing they have that capability. He monitors on his phone how the robots function, and is alerted to any necessary repair. “Farmers are embracing the technology more,” said Eric Eric Frantz Frantz, a Wisconsin Public Service agricultural consultant. “It has to do with labor. It gives them more freedom. And they receive a lot more information on the cows.”

Levash family farm The Levash family farms 730 acres; 300 are owned. They do all crop work themselves other than combining. They plant 300 acres of corn. They chop about 100 acres, make snaplage from 60 acres and harvest the rest as highmoisture or dry grain. They also plant 80 acres of soybeans and seed 60 acres of alfalfa with peas and oats to feed heifers and dry cows. The remainder of their land is in production-year alfalfa. All young stock are raised at the farm.

He said he anticipates seeing many more robotic-milking retrofits in the near future. The family used Wisconsin Public Service rewiring-program funds for their robotinstallation and remodeling project. Frantz said dairy customers can apply for 50 percent cost-sharing for farm rewiring, up to $10,000. A Wisconsin Public Service grant was also utilized to put an equipotential plane into their facility in order to be compliant with electrical codes. The maximum grant for equipotential-plane installations is $2,000. They also received technical assistance in upgrading their electrical system from singlephase to three-phase to accommodate robots. Robotic milking gives the family more freedom to schedule their days – including attending the 58th annual WPS Farm Show. John Levash said he remembers attending as a child with his father, when the show was in Green Bay. Now when he attends he doesn’t need to be home for milking. Lighting brings old barn to new life SURING, Wis. – Thanks to new light-emitting diode – LED – lights, an old barn built in the late 1800s is now as bright as a new freestall barn. The old barn’s electrical system at Hi Lo Acres in Suring also received an overhaul through the Wisconsin Public Service’s farm rewiring program. The updates are welcomed by Jeff Dickson and his nephew, Ryan Paschke, who milk about 110 cows and farm about 320 acres at Hi Lo Acres. Updates to the old tiestall dairy barn will provide Paschke, 23, a sound foundation for taking his interest in dairy production to the next level. “I’m working to improve milk production,” he said. With help from Chuck Imig, an agricultural consultant at Wisconsin Public Service, the dairy producers applied for two equipotential-plane grants from Wisconsin Public Service. They also applied for discounts on LED lighting from Focus on Energy, which partners with utilities across Wisconsin to help residents and businesses reduce energy waste. An equipotential plane is an electrically conductive grid embedded in a concrete floor and connected to an electricalgrounding system. It protects animals and people from stray voltage and other electrical hazards, by eliminating contact voltages in livestock areas. Wisconsin Public Service offers a 50-50 cost-sharing grant of up to $2,000 toward installation of an equipotential plane on dairy farms. Farmers who participate in the Wisconsin Public Service farmrewiring program can have their facilities tested for stray voltage at no cost, Imig said. When the rewiring project is completed, farmers can also have wiring inspected to ensure it’s in compliance with code. Both the barn and milk house at Hi Lo Acres were rewired to improve the safety and efficiency of equipment such as manure pumps, barn cleaners and the milking system.

“We also went from a 600-gallon milk tank to a 3,000-gallon milk tank,” Dickson said. “And we remodeled the milk house without losing time.” New LED lighting will improve energy savings in both old and new barns. LED lighting provides one See LIGHTING, Page 10

of the quickest paybacks on today’s dairy farms, and that’s why more metal-halide lighting is being replaced by LED lighting, said Fred Daniels in Energy Efficiency Services for Franklin Energy Services Inc. Farmers can realize a return on their investment in the new lighting in one to three years depending on variables. The 120-foot by 120-foot freestall barn at Hi Lo Acres was completed in 2016. Dickson worked with Steve Dax, a construction manager at Valley Building Systems of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, to discuss design options. “We encourage the use of Focus on Energy rebates and incentives,” Dax said. “The more efficient products that producers install, the less their operation expenses will be.” The freestall barn at Hi Lo Acres has 120 stalls with waterbeds for the cows. The barn features a curtain system for natural ventilation. It also features chimney vents. Variable-speed fans run off the barn’s thermostat. For farmers looking to remodel or build new facilities, Dickson said, “I’d advise them to do their homework, visit other farms and look into programs such as those offered by Wisconsin Public Service and Focus on Energy to save some money.” Visit www.wisconsinpublicservice. com or www.focusonenergy.com for more information.

SHIFTTRONIC 2-SPEED OR 3-SPEED POWERSHIFT

Containing and shaping the power of Penta’s Hurricane Augers, our robust tub features a ¾” thick high-wear, steel floor to take on heavy impacts, high abrasion and the long hours you demand every day from your TMR mixer. Straight side walls reduce compaction and minimize over-processing while rolled-formed ends with robot-welded sides deliver a smooth, consistent curve that resists buildup. Internal tub angles, curves and baffles work together with the Hurricane Auger for the best possible mix and clean-out.

Own yOuR MIx. EvERy DAy.

FROM FIELD TO FARM

The Penta line of Dump Trailers are designed to get your crop from the field to your farm. Ranging in size from 1050 Cubic feet to 2475 Cubic feet there is one ready for you. Farmer focused features like better visibility in the box and the unique reverse tilt for better filling, all built as tough as you.

FARM FEEDIng

The best quality feed needs the best quality mix. Penta TMR Mixers are designed, tested and farm proven to deliver the best mix on the market. Our Hurricane Auger allows forage to circulate faster through the mix for quicker processing and mixing times.

FROM FIELD TO FIELD

The Penta (Hagedorn) line of Manure Spreaders allows you to make the best use of your organic nutrient resources. The Hagedorn Spreaders processes the manure finer with the best spread pattern. This lets your field make better use of this rich resource.

See Us at the Show

www.trioliet.com

trioliet.Invents for you.

Feeding your fields can take a toll on your equipment. Manure is a heavy high stress inducing load that puts high strain on your spreader, not to mention it rusts whatever it touches. That’s why Penta’s Hagedorn spreaders use high strength poly boards, galvanized end and push gets, to stand up to the loads and fight rust. So you can feed your fields for years to come.

INSTANT DISCOUNTS ON BULBS Lighting accounts for about 20 percent of the average home’s electric bill. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use up to 75-percent less energy and can last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. All compact fluorescent light bulbs contain about 5 milligrams of mercury per bulb, which is less than found in an average watch battery. Though it’s an extremely small amount, these bulbs do need to be recycled properly. If one of these bulbs breaks, take special steps as advised by the Environmental Protection Agency.

LOOK UP AND LIVE

MIKE KLAWITTER For Agri-View‌

In agriculture, size means everything, especially when it comes to taller vehicles that run the risk of knocking down power lines in farm fields and on rural roads. Live electrical wires that hit the ground or land on top of vehicles can cause serious injuries or death.‌ Corey Kuchta, agriculture market leader for Wisconsin Public Service, said the minimum clearance for power lines is 16 feet, 5 inches, but agriculture equipment is becoming much taller than that. For example, arch snouts attached to choppers – used to cut hay and corn silage – might reach up to 20 feet.‌ “More and more choppers are running into power lines,” Kuchta said. “Field cultivators are running down roads 14 feet high. When you have a 16-foot

power-line clearance, it’s getting close and there’s not much room for error.” Kuchta advises farmers to scout out fields and local roads to determine where power lines are located before starting their work. “They have to know where the power line is, and lower the snout on their chopper (down to 12 feet) when they cross under the power line,” he said. “If you are driving a 14-foot-high combine and getting close to the height of a power line, you should call the utility company and have that power line measured to make sure it has proper clearance. It’s possible for lines to have sagged.” According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 62 farm workers die every year from electrocution. It’s often one of the most overlooked hazards of farm work. The OSHA website states that electrocutions are commonly caused by portable grain augers, oversized wagons and other large farm equipment coming in contact with overhead power lines. In January, a 54-year-old farmer in Great Britain was killed after a high crane he was using to load scrap metal into a truck collided with an overhead power line. Kuchta said if a power line is downed or lands on a vehicle, the person should stay in the cab and call 911 or the local utility company to determine if the line is active or inactive. If an electrical fire breaks out, the driver should See SAFETY, Page 52

western Brown County, Wisconsin, as well as Oconto and Marinette counties in northeast Wisconsin and Menominee County in Upper Michigan. Imig said the Hoffmans upgraded their electrical system from single-phase to three-phase. Wisconsin Public Service rebuilt 2 miles of distribution line, upgrading it to three-phase to accommodate their needs. The Hoffmans also utilized Wisconsin Public Service’s farm-rewiring program, which provides cost-sharing up to $10,000. A Wisconsin Public Service consultant does a final inspection to ensure rewiring is codecompliant. The Hoffmans then installed an equipotential plane for the new robotic rotary. Wisconsin Public Service’s equipotential-plant grant initiative provides 50 percent of the cost of such installations, up to $2,000. The farmers also took advantage financial assistance for electrical-related improvements such as lighting and fans from Focus on Energy, which partners with utilities across Wisconsin to help residents and businesses reduce energy waste. “The Hoffman family was excellent to work with,” Imig said. “It was inspiring to work with technology of this magnitude and be part of the first rotary robotic parlor in the country.” Kent Hoffman said robotic rotaries are the future because of labor savings and quicker milking speed. The family’s milking time has been reduced by half. Visit www.wisconsinpublicservice. com or www.focusonenergy.com for more information.
