WPS AG CONSULTANTS

Well-rounded consultant joins WPS JASON MALONEY

For Agri-View

CHILTON, Wis. – Sometimes we run into people who just seem to be in the right place. As we begin to know them it usually turns out that indeed, they were collecting knowledge and experience all along the path to where they are now. And folks like that can be worth their weight in gold. Alex Geiser is one of those people. He’s a new Wisconsin Public Service agricultural consultant based in Chilton. Like the rest of the WPS agricultural staff, he has a farm background and an education in agriculture. A lifelong Wisconsin resident, he graduated from Hilbert High School. “I went to Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton (Wisconsin) for a degree in agribusiness and science technology, and then to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to study dairy science,” he said. “I had an uncle who had a 50-cow dairy outside of Hilbert. That’s where my farming started; I’ve worked on dairy farms much of my life.” Geiser has also worked in feed sales, cheese production and as a project manager for a company specializing in anaerobic digesters. In his free time he raises beef cattle. But being an agricultural consultant at WPS is the position he has been working toward all his life. “There are several (WPS agricultural consultants) around the state,” he said. “We serve the agricultural community. If folks need new service, or have concerns with service they have – both electrical and natural gas – they contact us. We are here to serve our customers.” Rob Juneau, also a WPS agricultural consultant, manages the annual WPS Farm Show. “When we started (agricultural consulting) our services were based around strayvoltage testing,” Juneau said. “Wisconsin developed a farm-wiring program around 1999. A utility can fix problems (on utility-owned equipment), but farmers had to fix the problems in their own wiring. Now there can be funding to help fix problem wiring for farmers. We can also help with wiring-system updates. “If a farmer is upgrading, putting in a new freestall barn for instance, they can call us and we can make the application process easier for them. We can help them with contracts so they can get electricity

they need and natural gas where it’s available. As farms get bigger they often use more gas. Sometimes it’s cost-effective to run natural gas to a farm. “We can help with billing questions. Essentially we’re account representatives.

Whatever a farmer needs, they can call us and we will help them.” WPS ag representatives will be available at the WPS Farm Show. Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

WPS funded feasibility study LYNN GROOMS

When the BC Organics biorefinery near Greenleaf, Wisconsin, becomes fully operational, it is intended to convert about 960,000 gallons of manure per day to renewable natural gas, recycled water and bedding for cattle.

Manure creates new possibilities LYNN GROOMS

lgrooms@madison.com‌

GREENLEAF, Wis. – Dynamic Group values manure. That’s why the biorefinery developer is building BC Organics in the midst of dairy country near Greenleaf. When the BC Organics biorefinery becomes fully operational by the end of the year, the company plans to convert about 960,000 gallons of manure per day to renewable natural gas, recycled water and bedding for cattle. “We chose the Greenleaf site because of the proximity to several dairy farms,” said Dan Nemke, chief technology officer at Dynamic. “Manure from those 11 farms will be the feedstock the facility will use to produce renewable natural gas.” The renewable natural gas will be injected into the Guardian Pipeline, which interconnects with an interstate network of pipelines. It will be transported through that network to California where it will be used to produce compressed natural gas for vehicles to help satisfy California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. The compressed natural gas produced will be equivalent to 11,000 gallons of diesel fuel per day, according to Dynamic. California and a few other states have created programs focused on the reduction of fossil-fuel-based fuel. Oregon has

an incentive program for reduced-carbon fuel. And the state of Washington has proposed a program to reduce the carbon intensity of fuels and provide additional value for biofuels, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The market for compressed natural gas in North America is forecast to increase substantially due to growing demand for natural-gas vehicles, according to Polaris Market Research. The global market for compressed natural gas is forecast to reach about $270 billion by 2027.

After manure has undergone anaerobic digestion at BC Organics, solids will be dried and separated. Fibers from the manure will be recovered to be used for cow bedding. The solids also could be sold as potting soil.

Wisconsin Public Service in 2012 provided funding to Brown County, Wisconsin, to study the feasibility of anaerobic digestion on dairy farms. Dynamic Group was awarded the feasibility study and BC Organics arose from its results. The “BC” in the facility’s name stands for Brown County. “Organics” is used in the name because the facility is not just an anaerobic digester; it’s an organic waste-management facility, said Dan Nemke, Dynamic’s chief technology officer. “We provide organic waste solutions to the dairy industry through both anaerobic digestion and nutrient recovery,” he Dan Nemke said. Dynamic has provided project development and will be responsible for maintenance of BC Organics. It owns the facility, which is to feature 16 digesters. Each is to have the capacity to hold 1.25 million gallons of manure. The farms with which Dynamic is working are all within about a 10-mile radius of the facility. Two of the largest farms, only about a mile from the plant, will pump manure via pipeline to BC Organics. The project will pay for the other farms to haul manure to the digester, Nemke said. WPS has continued to be involved as the BC Organics facility has progressed. WPS has helped to extend the facility’s natural-gas l i n e s a n d t h re e - p h a se electric power to the project site, Nemke said. Rob Juneau, an agricultural consultant at WPS, is working with BC Organ- Rob Juneau ics to prepare transformers and gas meters as construction continues. “I’m also working with a couple of the farms that will be supplying manure,” Juneau said. “They also need new threephase services.” Lynn Grooms writes about the diversity of agriculture, including the industry’s newest ideas, research and technologies as a staff reporter for Agri-View based in Wisconsin.

A rendering from BC Organics shows a reverse-osmosis system that will be part of the final water-treatment system.

March 2022

Each of the 16 digester tanks being constructed at BC Organics will have the capacity to hold 1.25 million gallons of manure, according to the company.

Manure From 7

The facility’s water-treatment system will remove pathogens that may still be present after the digestion process. And it will separate about 50 percent of the water from the manure, Nemke said. By reducing the water content, the system will help participating farmers; the amount of manure that trucks must carry will be reduced. That will reduce wear on area roadways. Jon Wiese of Wiese Brothers Farms near Greenleaf said manure-volume reduction would be helpful. That’s because for every gallon hauled there’s a lot of associated cost. Wiese and his family have a 6,000-milking-cow herd about a mile from the BC Organics facility. They plan to pump manure directly to the biorefinery. The Wieses farm 7,000 acres. Reducing the amount of water in manure could enable them to practice no-till. “That’s a huge deal,” Wiese said. “We would never be able to do no-till otherwise because manure needs to be tilled in.” And because manure volume will be reduced, the farm will have more space to store manure. That means they’ll have greater flexibility regarding when they can apply manure to the fields. They won’t need to haul manure if weather isn’t conducive. The Wieses plan to use fiber reclaimed from the manure-separation process for cattle bedding. They’ve been composting manure for bedding; the BC Organics manure-separation process will hasten bedding production because the material is dried.

Stainless-steel digester tanks are being constructed on the BC Organics site. The biorefinery is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.

The process will separate phosphorus from nitrogen and potassium in manure, Nemke said. That’s expected to help farmers meet crop-nutrient needs without increasing phosphorus levels in fields. Reduced volumes of water in the manure also is expected to help reduce the movement of nutrients into the Lower Fox River Watershed. The water-treatment system will return clean water to the participating farms. Dynamic forecasts the facility will produce

more than 400,000 gallons of recycled water per day. Farmers will be able to use the recycled water for irrigation purposes or for washing equipment on their farms, for example. That’s expected to reduce demand for groundwater. Jeff Rueden of Rueden Beef is another of the farmers who plans to send manure to the biodigester. The Greenleaf-area farmer said the facility is going to be good for the community.

“The everyday ‘dairy air’ that we have following semis should be cut by about half,” he said. “Plus we’re making energy.” Visit dynamicgrp.us/bc-organics for more information. Power projects reenergize dairy farm LYNN GROOMS

Being safe during digging projects is as easy as “811.” Before picking up that shovel, call to have buried gas piping located – for free. Because skipping this important step can mean explosive consequences.

lgrooms@madison.com‌

OCONTO, Wis. – Antiques and vintage clothing are great. Trying to farm in a 100-year-old barn not so much. While the longevity of such structures is impressive, outdated electrical wiring can be dangerous. That’s why Phil and Laura Finger of Finger Family Farm near Oconto worked with Wisconsin Public Service on a farmrewiring project. The Fingers learned they were eligible for grants to update their dairy farm’s existing electrical system. The Fingers and their team milk 530 cows as well as raise young stock. They were winners of the 2020 Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer program and also were named the 2021 National Outstanding Young Farmers. “Working with Phil and Laura has been a very positive experience,” said Chuck Imig, WPS agricultural account manager. “Their example of hard work and dedication is seen through their success on the farm.” WPS helped in summer 2021with a number of projects on the Finger farm. The family farm was established in 1872; one of the barns still standing was built in the early 1900s. The Fingers had that tiestall barn rewired about 13 years ago but it was due for additional updates. Imig recommended installing an equipotential plane in their new heifer barn, which was built in 2021. The plane is a grounding grid that balances voltage between two surfaces with which cattle may come in contact. The Fingers were eligible for the WPS cost-share grant. The

LOCATE BURIED PIPING Call 811 and ask to have the pipeline and all other facilities located. Allow three full working days for energy companies to respond and locate the facilities in the area. WPS uses permanent markers to indicate the presence of gas lines in the area. Those markers usually are not set over the pipeline but are used to indicate gas pipelines in the area. You can rely on the paint and/or flag markings put on the ground by WPS to give the approximate location of facilities. Remember, any digging done near marked facilities must be done by hand. Never assume that your equipment won’t hit the facilities because you think they’re located at a greater depth.

KNOW ABOUT NATURAL GAS

See POWER, Page 14

The Finger Family Farm has a newer 600-amp grade-level service. WPS helped upgraded their previous 400-amp pole top. The change will provide additional capacity for any future expansion plans.

KNOW WHAT’S BELOW …

Through a Focus on Energy program, a WPS partner, the Fingers receive an incentive for the purchase and installation of LED high-bay lights for their new heifer barn.

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless and non-toxic gas that is used as an energy source. To make it easier to detect gas leaks, a harmless but pungent-smelling chemical is added to give natural gas a distinct odor. When mixed with air, natural gas can be explosive. Although some natural gas-air mixtures will not burn, the only safe practice is to assume that leaking natural gas is always explosive and dangerous. Signs of a natural gas leak include • ‌unexplained areas of dead vegetation where the surrounding area is green, • ‌distinct natural gas odor similar to rotten eggs, and • ‌blowing sound or bubbling in a wet or flooded area. If you smell natural gas, don’t look for the source of the gas leak; get out immediately! Call the WPS 24-hour natural gas emergency line from your mobile phone or a neighbor’s home, at 800-450-7280.

grant, offered to dairy farmers, is payable to as much as $2,000 per project The Fingers also consulted with WPS about relocating several of their overhead power lines to bury them underground. The overhead lines, which were carrying electricity into the farm’s different buildings, were interfering with equipment movement. “They were too low for the size of equipment we operate now,” Laura Finger said. “We had two poles tied together to support a mass of wires. WPS worked with us and our electrician to help relocate them through installation of underground wires to their respective locations.” That project also involved upgrading the farm’s existing 400-amp pole top to a newer 600-amp grade-level service. That will provide the Fingers additional capacity for any future expansion plans they might want to do, Imig said. The Fingers were able to use the WPS Farm Rewiring Grant Program to help pay for the project; the maximum grant amount for a dairy farm is $10,000. In addition to the electrical upgrades the Fingers finished construction of a new heifer barn in 2021. The barn can house as many as 80 animals; they currently have 70 animals in the new facility. It was built a bit bigger to provide comfort to the heifers as well as for people working in the building, Laura Finger said. GOT MANURE? MAKE BEDDING!

Krone Hay and Forage Equipment and Deutz Tractors are now teaming up to provide you with Cutting Edge™ equipment.

Come hang out with us...we’ll be in Hanger A!

CONCRETE·BUILDINGS·EQUIPMENT·SERVICE www.CowComfortZone.com 800-236-0603 S.D. Ellenbecker! Specializing in all type of concrete construction, including a variety of dairy industry and agricultural structures

FARM | EQUESTRIAN | HOBBY | COMMERCIAL

It lasts a lifetime. Plan it right.

At Lester Buildings, we expect our buildings to last for forever. That’s why we craft the per perfect plan with you, before the foundation gets laid. Call us today and enjoy your Lester experience for a lifetime.

Innovative construction methods... Ellenbecker is one of the first to introduce an all-metal frame method of agricultural construction to the area.

We Are your Turn Key General Contractor for Wisconsin

The concrete experts... • Barn additions • Barn remodeling projects • Concrete cow yards • Dairy complexes and structures • Free-stall and standard barns • Manure storage facilities • Milking parlors • Water reservoirs

LESTERBUILDINGS.COM 1222 Mount View Lane, Athens, WI 54411 Web: sdellenbecker.com Contact Dean @ 715-581-6408 or Jim @ 715-581-6433

Cost effective... All-metal construction requires fewer posts and columns. A standard all-metal barn would contain four columns instead of six found in most wood barns. Durable, safer materials... Structures are far less susceptible to fire since no wood is used in the construction process. Buildings are more resistant to natural elements than wooden counterparts.

LIGHTING FACT SHEET

WHAT TO DO IF A CFL BREAKS Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use up to 75 percent less energy and can last 10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Although CFLs contain only a small amount of mercury, it’s best for the environment and for the health and safety of yourself and others to properly clean up after a broken CFL. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends the steps at right to safely dispose of the debris. FOR LOCAL INFORMATION ON RECYCLING LIGHT BULBS Check with your local county recycling program to see if there are local restrictions for light bulb disposal. Some municipalities require luorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash. Otherwise, dispose of the materials at your local recycling center. CFLS AND THE ENVIRONMENT The growing popularity of CFLs has prompted some to question the bulbs’ mercury content and its effect on the environment. Like all luorescent lamps, CFLs contain small amounts of mercury –an average of ive milligrams of mercury per bulb. By comparison, some watch batteries contain 25 mg of mercury, and many thermostats contain up to 3,000 mg.

RECOMMENDED STEPS 1 Have people and pets leave the room.

2 Open nearby windows for 5-10

minutes to disperse any vapor that may escape and shut off the central heat/air conditioning system, if you have one.

3 Carefully sweep up the glass

fragments using stiff paper or cardboard (do not use a vacuum or broom), and place them in a lidded jar or sealed plastic bag.

4 Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small pieces and powder. Wipe the area with damp paper towels. Place the towels in the sealed bag.

5 If vacuuming is needed after visible

CFLs are perfectly safe to use; they do not emit mercury when they are intact, in use, properly stored, handled, or installed. And because CFLs use less electricity, they are actually responsible for fewer mercury emissions than traditional incandescent bulbs. A power plant will emit more mercury producing the electricity to light an incandescent bulb than to run a CFL for the same length of time. FOR MORE INFORMATION To ind out how you can reduce energy costs and improve the comfort, safety, and durability of your home, call Focus on Energy at 800.762.7077 or visit focusonenergy.com/residential. Environmental Protection Agency epa.gov/bulbrecycling Wisconsin DNR dnr.wi.gov/topic/Recycling/bulbs.html

materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken. Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister) and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.

6 Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors until the materials can be disposed of properly.

SAVING ENERGY AND MONEY FOR WISCONSIN

7 Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken for several hours, leaving the heating and air conditioning system off.

Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy eficiency and renewable energy, helps eligible residents and businesses save energy and money while protecting the environment. Long-day lighting worth considering University of Wisconsin

When cows are exposed to long days, 16 to 18 hours, research has shown they will give 4 to 5 pounds more milk per day. Long days can be created by exposing the cows to artificial or a combination of natural and artificial light. In a tie-stall barn that can be accomplished by installing a row of light-emitting diode tubes, T-8 or T-5 fluorescent fixtures, over the feed alley. In a free-stall barn, light-emitting diode, metal halide or high-pressure sodium lamps are normally used unless the ceiling height is less than 10 feet. Then light-emitting diode or high-output T-8 fluorescent fixtures would likely be recommended. Long-day lighting will generally not work for farms milking three times per day because it’s nearly impossible to achieve six to eight hours of darkness due to milking schedules. It might be possible to achieve for a select number of groups but likely not the entire herd. Most dairy barns are too dark. Improving barn lights and operating them according to a specific schedule can improve both the profitability and working conditions on a dairy farm. That technique is known as long-day lighting or photoperiod control. It has been well researched in the past 20 years. Benefits are many. • increased milk production • improved heifer growth • more enjoyable • safer working conditions INVESTMENT CREATES PROFIT Studies have shown that exposing cows to supplemental light during the short days of fall and winter can increase milk production by about 5 percent to 16 percent.

Most dairy barns are too dark. Improving barn lights and operating them according to a specific schedule can improve both the profitability and working conditions on a dairy farm.

CONTRIBUTED

Studies show that exposing cows to supplemental light during the short days of fall and winter can increase milk production by about 5 percent to 16 percent.

But cows also eat more, and there’s a cost to install and operate the lights. The increased milk yield pays for the extra feed and the cost of the lights – and still leaves a net profit. Estimated investment costs and pay-back periods for lights in a 40-cow tie-stall barn range from $1,672 paid back in 111 days to $2,125 paid back in 332 days

See LIGHTING, Page 54

CREATE 16-18 HOURS LIGHT, 6-8 HOURS DARK Most of the experiments with long-day lighting have provided supplemental light, extending the fall and winter days in September through March or April – creating 16 to 18 hours of light per day. The effects of the technique are well-documented. A producer can expect a substantial production increase by using a consistent program of 16 to 18 hours of light followed by six to

eight hours of darkness. Note that consistent night-off and early morning-on timing is necessary to achieve an increase in milk production.

WORKPLACE SAFER, MORE PRODUCTIVE Trivial accidents such as slips and falls happen during barn chores. They may be disabling and are occasionally fatal. Good lighting helps workers spot obstructions and slippery areas. Better lighting also makes it easier to notice cows in heat, cows with health problems, cows off feed, poor feed quality, etc. In addition most people appreciate a well-lit workplace and consequently may become more productive.

Lighting From 53

IMPROVE LIGHTING IN STALL BARNS Cows are stimulated to produce more milk when they register longer days through their eyes and brain. The average light intensity in the barn needs to be at least 15 foot-candles at cow-eye level. That can be achieved by installing sealed fluorescent-light fixtures over the manger. Avoid using incandescent lamps because they are not energy-efficient and have a short bulb life. In most stall barns natural daylight is insufficient. Therefore the manger lights need to also be on during the day. To ensure consistent light and dark periods, a timer should be installed.

LEFT: Hoffman Farms is a 300-plus-head dairy with 800 acres just west of Chatfield, Minnesota. Hoffman Farms saved energy and money on dairy technology through People’s Energy Cooperative energy-savings rebates. By placing a variable-frequency drive on a 15-horsepower milk pump, the dairy is saving 25,590 kilowatt hours during a 4,000-hour annual run time and $450 in energy rebates. Switching their dairy-parlor lights to lightemitting diodes resulted in excellent savings as well. Changing 26 two-lamp fixtures from T-8 fluorescent bulbs to linear light-emittingdiode bulbs saved 3,333 kilowatt hours and $312 in energy rebates, and another 42 T-8 fluorescent bulbs in different fixtures to linear light-emitting diodes saved 1,116 kilowatt hours and resulted in $168 in energy rebates.

IMPROVE LIGHTING IN FREE-STALL BARNS To stimulate milk production, provide an average of 15 or more foot-candles in all areas where cows spend time. Be sure to provide sufficient light also to outside free-stall rows. Certain work areas such as treatment, breeding and feeding require 20 or more foot-candles. Metal-halide and high-pressure sodium lamps provide good light output and have a long lamp life. Both represent energy-efficient options for free-stall barns. The amount of natural light in noninsulated, naturally ventilated free-stall barns during daytime typically exceeds 20 foot-candles. Thus the lights can normally be turned off for most of the day and operated only during early-morning, late-afternoon and evening hours. Install a timer to achieve consistent on-off times. A photo sensor should be installed to save energy during normal days, but automatically keep the lights on during exceptionally dark winter days.

PEOPLE’S ENERGY COOPERATIVE

APPROPRIATE FOR MOST DAIRY OPERATIONS Long-day lighting is profitable and feasible for stall barns and free-stall barns of all sizes. Farmers should take advantage of the opportunity to improve profitability and working conditions. A simple light meter can tell whether the amount of light in a stall barn is too dim. Measuring light levels after the installation can verify that new lights deliver light levels required to stimulate milk production. Area utilitycompany representatives and county agents may be able to assist with measuring light levels – or provide a light meter on a loan basis. Otherwise a simple light meter

can be purchased for $100 to $150. This material was developed by the Wisconsin Healthy Farmers, Healthy Profits Project, whose goal is to find and share

work-efficiency tips that maintain farmer health and safety, and also increase profits. Visit bse.wisc.edu or call 608-262-7408 for more information.

Analyze on-farm energy efficiency DANIEL CIOLKOSZ

Pennsylvania State University‌

Energy is used to heat, cool, plant, harvest, clean and perform a wide variety of tasks on the farm. But the price of energy can sometimes be a real obstacle to a farm being profitable. Energy efficiency on the farm is probably more important now than ever. Farms that utilize their energy efficiently tend to have a much better prospect for being successful in the current economy. Farms use energy in a variety of forms — elecDaniel tricity, gasoline, diesel Ciolkosz fuel, propane and natural gas. Renewable energy resources such as biogas or biomass can also be produced as well as used on the farm. But they must all be used effectively if a farm’s profitability is to be maximized. The most important step in improving a farm’s energy efficiency is to understand current energy use on the farm. That cannot be done by intuition alone. A careful assessment of the farm’s energy use is necessary to know where energy is being used. It’s not uncommon to find unexpected “energy hogs” — equipment or processes that use more energy than they should. Once the existing energy usage is determined, it’s time to consider what sort of changes can be made to reduce energy use and operating costs. Those changes are often referred to as “energy-conservation measures” or ECMs. Some energy-conservation measures can save a great deal of energy with minimal cost or trouble; those are always the most desirable. Other energy-conservation measures may be less worthwhile if they save only a small amount of energy at a relatively inflated cost or hassle to the farmer. Energyconservation measures can be as simple as changing a temperature setting or as complex as replacing multiple pieces of equipment with more efficient devices. Generating a list of energy-conservation measures for a farm isn’t always an easy process. It often requires experience with farms as well as with energy systems. The most common way to compare

energy-conservation measures is to calculate their “simple payback.” That’s the number of years that it takes for the savings of an energy-conservation measure to cover the cost of installing the measure. If a new energy-efficient fan costs $300 to install, but reduces electricity costs by $100 per year, the payback is three years. Shorter paybacks tend to be better, with four to five years often considered the maximum for many commercial operations. An energy-conservation measure shouldn’t be considered if it reduces the performance of the farm — unless the savings in energy is so great that the reduction

in performance is worth the investment in the long run. Deciding that trade-off is not a simple matter. It involves both economic analysis and using one’s best judgment. Reducing energy use is not the only way to save on an energy bill and make a farm more profitable. There are several related strategies that involve changing the way that energy is used that could also yield savings — including demand management and renewable generation. Demand management is the method of controlling the time in the day when electricity is used, in order to reduce costs. Some farms — usually larger ones — pay a charge for the maximum rate at which electricity is used. All farms may soon be required to pay for “real-time pricing”

of electricity that varies cost during the course of the day. In either situation it’s possible for farmers to adjust their operating schedules to reduce their electricity charges. The other major related issue to energy efficiency is the opportunity for farmers to produce renewable energy on the farm. That reduces the amount they need to purchase from off the farm. One popular option is the production of biogas from animal manure. Another possibility is to grow energy crops. Visit extension.psu. edu and search for “energy” for more information. Daniel Ciolkosz is an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University.
