Each coworking pod contains a generous outdoor area, two private work rooms, a conference room and a bathroom. The coworking pods relieve stress from sheltering in place by offering an added semi-private space to work. Some pods rest above breezeways to allow for ventilation into the courtyard. The corridors are
open to the natural elements so that wind can ventilate the complex and cleanse the air. This also brings in a large amount of natural light into interior spaces. The façade is open through the fins to pull air up out of the courtyard and through the clear story space. The interior courtyard engages all senses through its incorporation of light, materials, water features, wind and live plants. The extra spaces incorporated into the program, such as the bodega and café, are meant for the apartment and outside community to
hang out at a safe distance. The first floor includes the garage and commercial or retail programming, the second, fourth floor, and sixth floor include the living units. The third and fifth floors contain working podules with craftsman’s studios mixed in. I see this complex being used by all demographics and adapting to the normal cycles of the earth.

X SHAPE
BUTTERFLY PAVILION The pavilion is a place to gather, create, share ideas, relax alone or interact with the community in an informal setting. The organic shape was derived from the butterfly’s life cycle. The sides are connected to the ground while
some edges sweep up mimicking the butterfly’s wings. The pavilion feels inviting yet complicated, like the cocoon of the butterfly. We used a pattern designed in schematic stages to develop the shape and modular panels.
We manipulated the legs of the pavilion, letting some edges reach the ground that in turn create seating and climbing areas. The modular panels seep light into the interior allowing the shadows to belong to the light while changing
with the times of the day. The pattern displayed by the panels is always changing, much like the life of a butterfly.

N E T Z E R O ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The semester project for Advanced Building Technology and High-Performance Design was to design a high-performance building based on the Solar Decathlon guidelines. Our group chose to design a net zero elementary school located in Seattle, WA. The school contains 4 classrooms per grade level as well as a special education room. The typical needs of an elementary school are met with a library, large dining area, auditorium, gym, and outdoor play areas. The extracurricular activities teach the kids how we interact with the natural and built environment. Some of the

a courtyard that includes gardening areas, a chicken
coop, and various shelves, natural outdoor learning ventilation, shading, activities such as sundials glazing on windows, and and rain capturing systems as compost areas for passive nuanced features to strategies. Our active systems enhance learning for the students. The courtyard provides a beautiful, centralized space that connects all buildings through circulation. The long and narrow forms of the buildings are designed this way in order to provide natural daylight from the north and south facades. We went through an in-depth energy analysis of the elementary school by using Autodesk’s Insight. For this building typology and climate, our proposal demonstrates some of the most beneficial building performance strategies. We implement

structural metal system aims to be efficient, rational, and clean by using standardized building materials, minimal material used for the frame, and the incorporation of recycled metal materials. This system strategy permits the recycling of scrap metals and less VOCs emissions. We selected light fixtures that are low energy

The passive systems drastically reduce the energy costs of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, permitting the school’s budget to focus on educational
resources development.
and
With the natural garden and farm systems in place, the school can potentially grow these habitats and reduce the cost of outside food sources. The active design strategies are used as a teaching method for the students and faculty as well. Overall, our design is high performing and benefits the occupants creating a happier environment for all.

Using the site and climate analyses, the elementary school in Seattle was designed with open courtyards and outdoor learning strategies to drive design decisions. Orientation and natural light are imperative to high-performance design. The program layout is meant to create an engagement between the students and the local climate.
