LIGHT STUDY 1
In the linguistic standpoint, Luminosity is term associated with “relative brightness of something” or “the relative quantity of light”. In a simple definition, luminosity is the amount of light shining from a light source, regardless of nature or artificial source. Recent researches on the nature of light broaden our understanding about the light, which leads to significanr technological achievements. Luminosity, illumination and brightness are set of concepts, which closely related to each other. Luminosity imply the extent of light, while illumination denotes to the supplying of light and brightness of something means to the reflection of light on the surface once illuminated. For instance, amount of light shine from a star is luminosity, while how bright star viewed from the earth is the brightness. Thought the lenses of philosophy, luminosity used in broad range of meaning. Illuminator and acceptor of light are two interconnected concepts. Our understanding of surrounding mainly rely on the light that is absorb by means of receptors in the eyes.

Acceptors of light are unable to generate light and only absorb and reflect the light. Presumably, once illuminator stops producing luminosity, other object will not be visible and lost their luminosity. In other words, acceptors depend on the illuminators in the their appearance. In addition to scientific definition of light, it has symbolic role in stories related to creation of human and guidance by god. Light stands in constant to darkness, showing clarity and freedom. Enlighten is a verb which originated form light and defined by Oxford dictionary as “To give greater knowledge or understanding about a subject or situation. Illuminate is another term, originated from lumin which means clarifying and transferring information to others. In the architecture, luminosity play a vital role in the expression of the design. Architects prone to equip their design with lightening and brightness concepts. Lightening is a powerful tool to manipulate our understanding of shape, size and material of design. Use of this technique enable designer to create more impressive buildings. Zaha Hadid is a prestigious architect, who elaborate the use of lightening technique in her designs. She integrates nature and artificial lights in the building to add beauty to the design. Line works are noticeable in her design, especially recent designs, due to the appearance of lightning and luminosity. The Nordpark Railway Station (Austria, 2007), Strasbourg’a Dongdaemun Design Plaza (South Korea, 2013), Vitra Fire Station (Germany, 1993) and the Leeza SOHO skyscraper (China, 2017) are examples of her recent design, where lighting of building is one of the main elements of the designs. LIGHT STUDY 2
Linguistically, reflection is the redirection of something from a surface as a response. It is a physical phenomenon which relates to the change in the direction of light once blocks by the surface without absorbing. Reflection of light beam occurs at the same angle that light meets the surface. Form philosophical point of view, reflection of light from a surface embodies the objects, which represent the existence and features of surrounding. For example, reflection from a glass surface is totally different in a desert and forest, which signify the involvement of surrounding in the reflection. In other words, cooperation between objects and their mutual influence build the reflection. In addition, reflection defined as the reproducing, copying and distortion of objects influenced by surrounding objects. Reflection allow us to understand the shape, colour and texture of objects around. Prada Aoyama by Herzog & de Meuron, 2003, Tokyo
New Hall by Herzog & de Meuron, 2013, Basel
Birmingham New Street Station by ZAPA, United Kingdom
Reflection help to strengthen the value of object’s existence and their link together. In addition, reflection frequently used as the referring to the events happened in the past. In this context, it means past events are means for enriching our life with experience to take advantage for future. Noteworthy, reflection denotes individuals should not reside in past events, but learn good and bad lessons with to use for future experience. In the architecture, first thing spring in our mind once we talk about reflection is glass, steel and other reflective surfaces in our daily life. These substances have been widely used in the exterior structure of building instead of interior design. In the past, shinning facade in the building became popular, especially after World War II and advent of modernism such as Seagram building by Mies van der Rohe. Reflection of light by facade glass aims to represent the self-character, while other used materials could not fulfil this target. Recently, more attention has been drawn to the shape and structure of exterior facade since people are getting bored by typical square glazing glass facade. Architects integrates different materials to achieve desirable reflection, which causes designs to become more complicated these days. Birmingham new street station refurbishment is showing the perfect use of reflection in architecture, designed by Alejandro Zaera-Polo architect (ZAPA). Facade use reflective materials in irregular and fluctuating shapes, which demonstrates the distorted figure of trains. According to Charles Valla of ZAPA, design of facade aims to reflect the activity happened inside the station. However, despite the capture of public attention to reflective facade, it influence the direction of light and heat toward ground that might induce risk for individuals. ZAPA used ray-tracing software and multiple redesign to eliminate the light focusing in a certain point regardless of season or daytime. LIGHT STUDY 3
When light emits from one source to a substance, light beam can be reflected, absorbed, scattered or transmitted. Opacity can be considered as the lack of transparency or translucency or opposite to the transparency. Opacity is often used to describe the state of opaque, which occurs once light cannot easily pass through a substance. In philosophical meaning, the term opacity is a relative concept and can be more complicated connotation as it refers to the thoughts, beliefs or situation which are lacking clarity. In other words, opacity associates with the unclarity intentionally or accidentally. Opacity shows how difficult an object can be seen or understand. According to the near-primal belief, light is closely related to the knowledge and opacity block the way of knowledge. In this way, some authorities are often said to be opaque because they limit the way of knowledge transfer to the public. A dictionary with unclear definition, novel full of old-fashioned words and difficult grammars or a lecture without sensible concepts are typical example of opacity.

Aside from negative meaning of opacity, it can convey security and protection meaning as positive meaning. From ancient times, building served to protect people from uninhabitable weather condition and protect them from enemies. Residing in opaque buildings induce sense of security and invisibility to external enemies. In these days, a growing concern regarding the personal privacy gives more reason to pay more attention to opacity. Given this, new design try to protect the privacy of building by using different opaque materials to block light. Nordic people survive in the harsh weather condition in the Scandinavian countries through adaptability. Over the last centuries, novel designs and architectures enable buildings to make the most of use nature they reside. Opaque and absorbance of light over the white surface play important role in the capture of limited available nature light. Professor Henry Plummer elaborately investigated on the advantages of whiteness of building to use the scare light to daylight during summer and winter in Scandinavian. White surface allows to intensify the light to have bright rooms. Herning centre of arts in Denmark designed by Steven Holl architects is a breathtaking example of this culture, which encourage other nations around the world to follow their design. The centre characterized with white concrete wall and large low-slung opening, which makes sun light diffuse into the building in the middle of winter when sun form an arc in the sky. The white concrete wall causes the light be reflected to the building and low ceiling trap the light in a limit space and lighten the space. Design of building aims to maximize the light capture through placing the opening and windows on the southern side. Design and site location of Herning centre of arts imply the history of Scandinavian culture on their unique situation. LIGHT STUDY 4
Filtration is referred to the chemical or physical process to separate mixed matters into distinct components. In the simplest way of filtration, Filtration is the process of separating harmful solid particles from water solution, during which solution goes through a filtrate. In a broader definition, separation of bad out of good can be considered filtration such as filtration of bad words from our language to be polite with others. In an exaggerated use of filtration term, it can be said that court of law play the role of filtrate to separate bad and guilty people form good and normal public. In the light beam, broad range of wavelength exist, which are visible to the naked eye. However, it is likely to eliminate some wavelength through certain filtrates, which selectively captivate specific wavelength and allow undesirable wavelength to pass without change. In philosophical view, filtration is the deliberate distortion or elimination of some part information to deliver the target groups for exploitation purpose or making it acceptable. For example, a secretary who correct mails of her boss to remove unwanted grammatical errors, misspelling or bad words is doing filtration. In architecture, with the rapid development of technology and living standards, filtration is widely used to eliminate the undesirable items such as sound, light, and exhaust polluted gas. Le Corbusier is a famous architect known as a pioneering in modern architecture, who take advantage of daylight to build kinetic building. Of his design, we can denote to the design of religious places such as pilgrimage chapel at Ron champ, the Monastery of Sainte Marie de la Tourette and the Paris church of Saint-Pierre in Firminy. The latter captures one’s attention once spotting the irregular shapes sticking out from the façade. Each opening within protrusion filtrate light in a different way, which creates spectacularly incredible view. Le Corbusier created angelic and galactic atmosphere through arrays of concrete and glass in the building, which proves his sharp and creative mind. This design also shows how well he understand the link between light and divinity through manipulation of light within the building. Light has important symbolic connotation in different religions. In Christian, light has been metaphor of truth, goodness, Devine. Light always associated with removal of darkness in the bible. The contrast between light and darkness resemble the good and evil and believers and unbelievers. RESOURCES https://www.archdaily.com/597598/light-matters-le-corbusier-and-the-trinity-of-light
