Since the beginning of her music career in April of 2011 with her original song, Rain, Dodie Clark has gained over 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube, recorded over 130 songs, released two original albums and written a best-selling book and all of that before the age of 23. She came out as bisexual in 2016 and is a huge supporter of the LGBT community. Dodie has suffered from depression, anxiety and derealization disorder since her childhood and is very open about her struggles—a refreshing, and unfortunately rare, look at mental health. I sat down and spoke to two other fans of Dodie’s to hear about her effect on their own mental illnesses.

I don’t remember what song I first heard, but I remember the first time I heard her voice and how delicate and soft it was, but in the same way, she was so full of emotion and vulnerability in her voice. I recently got diagnosed with derealization like she has, and just hearing her experience and some of her songs that have dealt with it has helped a lot, realizing that it gets better, but you also relapse, but it’s okay to, and it’ll get better even though you relapse. And, I don’t know, it helps a lot just to have someone talk about the same thing that you have. It’s like her lyrics are almost thoughts and emotions that I would have as well, and I’ve made music, uh, similar to hers in the aspect of mental health and stuff like that. And I felt like she helped a lot shape, how I do my music, too. I did learn a few of her songs which I love and I play all the time. I think it’s really important to have people who have mental illnesses who are LGBTQ+ that talk about it, because, and how raw she talks about it because most people say the good stuff, “I had it and now I’m over it.” But she goes into the bad days
