Concept

On the other hand, its surrounding has been progressively occupied by commercial areas and sports infrastructures, some of them with a contrasting scale compared to the traditional mesh. It is a terrain in an apparent state of abandonment associated to the condition of expectant space, of urban emptiness. The concept for this project was based on the salt industry present nearby the terrain but also in the need of a big green area accessible to everyone for all the outdoor activities.

After

In spite of the short distance to the central zone of the city, the space is inserted in an area with a whole set of traditional structures in which salinas (salt industry) stand out.

Before

the project’s object to be develop is the open space located on the the left bank of the River Gilão, bordering the consolidated urban network of Tavira, with a communication axis of relatively recent construction.

Faro, Portugal Spring 2017

Its main goal is the development of strategies and proposals for a spatial and functional approach that will form the basis for an implementation of projects leading to the requalification of this Largo and its surroundings. The approach reflects on the potential social and ecological services that this area can provide to the built environment. The concept consists in the appreciation of the cultural heritage present on the site such as the church, transposing its construction lines to the pavement lines, creating several visibly distinct living spaces in vegetation and function.

After

The proposed exercise is a part of the project “Urban Rehabilitation and Environmental Valorization of a System of Public Spacesâ€? in the city of Faro (S. SebastiĂŁo Square and adjacent spaces). It is located in the consolidated urban area of the city and includes all pertinent articulations with the Urban structure.

Historical Analisis Fall 2016 Restoration Plan Spring 2017

Estoi, Portugal

Historical analisis Palace of Estoi’s Garden Fall 2016

Taking in charge that the cultural heritage is able to transcend and survive through the action of time, the present article aims to analyse the ‘Jardim de Estoi’, one of the historical gardens from the region of Algarve. The ‘Jardim of Estoi’ was built in the XVIIth century in order of Francisco Carvalhal Vasconcelos Coutinho in the image of the Queluz Palace. The authorship of the design of this place divides opinions, it can be a project by the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira or Manuel Caetano de Souza. The garden has two distinct phases, the first is when it was owned by Pereira Carvalhal Vasconcelos’ family and, after when it suffered interventions made by José Francisco da Silva, viscount of Estoi. The methodology used in this historical analysis is based in bibliographic research, visits to the garden and old pictures, aimed to acquire knowledge about the evolution of what did become one of the biggest examples of baroque gardens in Algarve.

1.1

Palace of Estoi’s Garden Spring 2017

The present restoration is based on the known history of the Palace’s construction and its gardens, as well as the transformations that have been identified over the years. This garden defends its title of a baroque garden due to the numerous elements present in it such as its tridimensional axis-based geometry, trident, sculptures and fountains to punctuate space, existence of broderie parterre, water games, adaptation to the Topography and optimization of views and treelined boulevards marking the view system. As part of the methodology approached, it was tried to value, in a way, both known phases of construction, being the maximum goal to find the balance between both. However, if you have information that dates back to the 18th century (the Carvalhal Vasconcelos’ family phase), a more targe ted restoration is proposed for this period, since it marks the emergence of the most important Baroque garden in the region.
