MAFS Public Benefit Seminar MAFS assists the community to apply for benefits like: Medicare, Medicaid, social security, access to care, Citizenship, immigration, transportation, childcare, SSI prescription drug, SNAP (Food Stamp), LIHEAP(heat and electricity), SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) On June 27th MAFS staff had a public benefits seminar at our Carol Stream office at 954 W. Army Trail Road, Carol Stream, IL 60188. Since our Carol Stream location has a large Asian population, we decided to have the seminar at this location. We wanted to reach out to as many people as possible to render our services. Our MAFS staff Tarinda McGee, Shane Solanki, Urvashi Bhatt, Eugenie Favre, Kiran Patel, and Jasbir Mann were present to carry out this outreach program. It was catered mainly to help the underserved community with individualized one on one consultations. We helped the community members who came for assistance by helping them fill out application for immigration. We made them aware of facts about immigration that they were previously uninformed. We also helped with SNAP and Medicaid. The community members present were very happy with the services provided that day. This seminar was very successful as we were able to serve them with the help they needed.
Naperville Patel Bros. Grand Opening We are extremely delighted to announce the Grand opening of another new location in Naperville. The new location opened on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 and is located at the Patel Brothers Plaza at 1568 Ogden Ave, Suite 144, Naperville, IL 60540. It was undoubtedly a celebration of the collaborative efforts of MAFS/UMAS/MHHC in serving the community for the last 26 years. This location will be a resource center to fulfill the needs of senior citizens to provide guidance regarding their eligible benefits. It will also serve as a homecare services office and training facility for new homecare aides. Our chief guests, Mayor Steve Chirico and former Consul General, Neeta Bhushan, performed the ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony was blessed by Swami Mukundananda of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Aurora, who chanted the ancient mantra of Vedas before the ribbon cutting. All managers, key staff personnel, several Adult Day Care Seniors arrived with utmost passion to witness the opening ceremony. A cake cutting ceremony by our honored guests was followed by an abundant spread of scrumptious and healthy lunch, prepared in our own Naperville, Niles and Chicago kitchens. The seniors enjoyed a sit-down lunch along with the chief guests, and the board of directors. Flower bouquets were presented to all our honored guests. Education Programs At MAFS we believe in education. Education and knowledge help you better understand yourself and the world around you. Adult Literacy - IL Secretary of State Adult Literacy Program funded by the office of Secretary of State, Jesse White. Started in July 2018, this program is running very successfully at 3 locations. We have 50-60 senior students, who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). We have 25 volunteer tutors who run this program smoothly. This program has undoubtedly helped seniors improve their English learning skills and simplified their daily lives by helping them manage their banking needs by reading, understanding, writing and signing their own forms. They can communicate on the telephone with ease! They are now able to communicate with their grandchildren effortlessly, who have been born and brought up in the US. They can count currency helping them shop and be independent. They understand and watch regular TV programs. If you are interested in enrolling in this program, please feel free to call us at 630-788-3557 for further information.
Memory Café - AgeOptions MAFS has started a new program titled “Memory Café” also known as “Comfort Me Café”. Memory Café is a wonderful, welcoming place for individuals with dementia or other cognitive impairment. In this program, we participate in a variety of activities like memory games, crafts, music, painting and motivational speeches with family member or caregivers. Memory Café is beneficial to those affected. It is also beneficial for their caregivers as well. Please benefit by registering for this program by calling, 1-800866-8627 if your parents or your loved ones need help! We meet every fourth Wednesday of each month at 1421 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, IL.
What’s Next? The world is facing an "aging crisis". In the next decade, the number of seniors aging 65 and older will reach one billion! The issue of taking care of immigrant seniors will become more difficult due to language and cultural barriers. Therefore MAFS is striving to accommodate the future needs of our community. We are constructing a new center on Devon Ave. to facilitate walk-ins for seniors to come and enjoy a hot home-cooked lunch and will also provide Public Benefits programs, including Immigration, OCI, Visas, Medicare and Medicaid, SHIP and other crucial senior services. We anticipate the opening of this center by June of 2020. We are also constructing a parking lot across the center to make it convenient for seniors and staff. We also continue to act as a liaison in research studies with the Northwestern University School of Medicine to find a solution of chronic diseases, particularly in South Asian Population, namely Diabetes and Heart disease.

2019 Annual Report
In our Senior’s Words Krishna Mahajan (Chicago)
I met Mrs. Santosh Kumar 26 years ago at a Karva Chauth party. I immediately felt comfortable talking to her and knew instinctively that this would be the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Mrs. Kumar and I led very different lives. I have always been a homemaker, staying home, raising my two children, and later leading a quiet retired life with my husband. Mrs. Kumar, on the other hand, has many more accomplishments to her name. Not only was she the perfect mother and wife, but she and her late husband, Mr. Pramod Kumar also collaborated to start many successful businesses. Her two sons supported her on her journey and provided invaluable help to her as she worked hard to meet her personal and professional goals. Mrs. Kumar established the Senior Citizen’s Center where my husband and I have spent countless hours with our friends. The Center provides a wonderful place for all of us to relax with people of our own age, share stories and concerns, play bingo, listen to music, and celebrate birthdays and festivals. It provides a home away from home when we miss India, the country where most of us were born. Indeed, the local Indian community owes much to Mrs. Kumar who has been a shining star, using her many skills and talents for the benefit of the community. In fact, somebody even wrote a book about her and bestowed upon her the title of Mother Teresa of Chicago. She is also known as the Jewel of Rajasthan, which is only one of the many honors and accolades that she has received.
She is also a role model for women and a mentor for young girls who have the courage to follow their dreams because of her amazing example. I often tell my grandchildren about Mrs. Kumar’s accomplishments to encourage them to have big dreams, to pursue their goals, and to work hard, because she has shown us that with hard work and perseverance anything is possible. My bond with Mrs. Kumar is deep, our friendship is strong, and I am very grateful that she came into my life. When we first moved to Chicago, Mrs. Kumar and her husband were both able to give us great advice and guidance that helped us to plan a comfortable retired life for ourselves. This bond was further strengthened when my husband began volunteering at the Senior Center several years ago. This gave us the opportunity to collaborate and spend even more time together, as we share a common interest in ensuring the continued success of the Senior Center. I believe Mrs. Kumar and I were destined to meet. Perhaps we knew each other from a past life. Knowing her has enriched my life more than words can say and I am eternally grateful that Mrs. Kumar and I were able to share at least some part of this journey of life together. I look forward to making many more happy memories with her in the future and wish her much success in all her endeavors.
2019 Annual Report
Rashmikaben Shah (Chicago) Rashmikaben Shah, the epitome of motherly love, care, inspiration and wisdom, who is living her life at ease, with her gracious goodness, and compassionate nature, turned eighty-four this month. She celebrated her 84th birthday this month seven times so far and plans to celebrate more times until the month’s end. She loves for her friends to indulge with treats and goodies as well as the Golden Diner’s lunch from MAFS's Chicago's kitchen. Overall, she is a fun-loving lady who is also talented and driven as she assists in distributing prayer papers to the ADS elderly each morning, snacks in the afternoon, and setting up games after lunch. She is the spark that empowers the elderly to talk, get involved, and take ownership in giving suggestions for the preparations of all the festival celebrations in Chicago. Socializing is her favorite thing to do most of the time at the center and she takes immense joy in reminiscing and sharing her life’s experiences openly and positively with everyone. She is loved by her friends and family members.

With Best Compliments From
