Our Company Who We Are Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS) has been providing Homecare and Adult Day Care services in the Chicagoland area for over 25 years! Our aim is to serve immigrant populations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. For the past three decades we have been at the forefront of meeting the requirements of the South Asian immigrant community and have since evolved to serve all communities. Advocacy ensures that people have their voice heard on issues that are important to them as well as access to information and services.
When Mrs. Santosh Kumar migrated to America in 1985, she was amazed to see how much America had to offer. However, she was shocked to see there were elderly being neglected. Mrs. Kumar knew something had to be done about this. Immigrant families were having a tough time taking care of their elderly. They were working full-time, looking after their children, all while attempting to assimilate to the American culture. There was no outlet for these ethnic populations when it came to homecare. The Homecare industry in Chicagoland was not understanding of the cultural aspects/needs of the immigrant populations for it to be truly effective. Mrs. Kumar knew she could not see the South Asian elderly in her community suffer the way that they were so she set out on a mission to make a difference in their lives by applying for the Homecare Program from the State of Illinois. She was contracted by the State in 1993 but didn’t stop there. She added Public Benefits, Social Services, Nutrition Programs, Educational & Health Research shortly after that. In 2006, she started Adult Day Care Services to transport seniors that were neglected when their children went to work. Homecare grew to 12 locations and Adult Day Care is currently offered at 6 centers.

Executive Director’s Statement We have gone through many challenges during the year 2020-21. When the global Pandemic began, we were forced to pivot our operations and change our short and long-term plans. Instead of panicking during these big changes, we stepped back and reexamined, and as a leader in the service sector, we steered decisively to new ways to adapt to the situation and introduced new processes and technology. We realigned to the new safety measures for our facilities to reopen programs and continue daily operations, as per the CDC, IDOA, and IDPH guidelines. We have taken every safety measures for seniors, staff, volunteers, and drivers including giving PPE to all staff and clients, using disinfecting fogging machines to spray all surfaces, retrofitting bathrooms in all locations with touchless toilets, faucets, soap dispensers, and dryers. It is mandatory for drivers and seniors to wear surgical masks. Drivers are directed to check the senior’s temperature with an infrared thermometer and are required to disinfect the vehicles after every use. Seniors must always maintain a 6ft distance in locations, wear a mask, wash their hands, and use hand sanitizer. Also, we have 2 medical-grade HEPA filters at each ADS site. We implemented online training for our caregivers and switched from desktops to a laptop and dock solution to give flexibility to our office staff.
Thank you for making 2020 a remarkable year despite the pandemic. This year marked a ‘very special’ status for the organization. Our dedicated staff has done an incredible job in expanding our outreach, therefore, strengthening our programs and services. We have been able to not only sustain but increase the value of our programs during the pandemic. We home-delivered more than 62,000 hot meals to any senior and family in need of healthy meals. At this time, I would like to mention that our incredible medical team, even with the risk to their personal wellbeing, continuously did wellness checks on seniors to keep them safe and well. We are proud to report that our dream project to open a state-of-the-art new senior center on Devon Avenue (see pg. 16) is complete and will open shortly in spite of the difficulties faced during the pandemic! Our ongoing goal is to keep improving the outreach of the community to provide the best of care. Our future plan is to expand our programs to other States and assist those immigrant populations with our much needed services. Thank you for wholeheartedly being a part of the UMAS team to serve the community. We are looking forward to doing much more in 2022.

2019 Picnic We held our second annual company “Family Day Picnic” on June 29, 2019, at Deer Grove East in Palatine, IL. It was created to support relationshipbuilding among co-workers which in turn maintains a positive working environment and provides a great opportunity for employees to introduce their families to the organization. UMAS is family-owned and gives great importance to “family” and has successfully served the senior community of the Chicagoland area for over 28 years. On this hot summer morning, Prashant Kumar (IT Director), Sagar Kumar (Operations Director), and Mital Patel (ADS Coordinator) arrived early at the picnic spot to organize the area for the grand event. About 500+ employees and their families came out to enjoy a variety of food, drinks, and music. The employees and their families were warmly welcomed by our reception staff who
handed them a welcome gift bag that contained office souvenirs and T-shirts which were specially made for this event by management as a token of their appreciation to the employees. Everyone was happy and eager to wear the T-shirts and was very appreciative and thankful! In her speech, Ms. Kumar welcomed and thanked employees for their dedicated service and specially thanked their families. She then announced the names of exceptional employees who were awarded Homecare Aide (HCA) of the Year Awards and bonuses were handed out to all Caregivers. She explained how their hard work and dedication help the company become bigger, better, and stronger. This brought encouragement to the employees as they cheered when the awards were distributed.

Mr. Maheshkumar has been attending Schaumburg ADS center from 2020, he is always involved in all activities and has suggestions for new craft activities. Mr. Bhavsar makes banners for birthdays, anniversaries, and all Hindu festivals. He also helps decorate for all events and make sure banners are up on the walls before the seniors arrives.
She is a very active and helpful personality who actively participates in all the center activities. She loves to be here in the center as per the schedule and happily interacts with all the staff members clients in the center. She is one of the best literacy program tutors in Niles location and has been here with UMAS for about 5 years.

Ms. Ruparel was born in 1929 and survived the 1944 explosions in Chinchbander. She lost her husband in 1988 and then moved to Chicago in 1998. Even though she adapted well to her new surroundings and had accepted the American lifestyle she missed home and her relatives tremendously. At 91, her flexibility, enthusiasm, and energy have kept her active and enabled her to overcome many hardships including this pandemic. She joined UMAS in 2010 and actively participates in all programs.
After finishing school in India in 1995 I migrated to the US. Then I retired here and had no activities and no socialization. My son’s family was very busy they took us once in a while to the temple there was no activity during the day so I and my wife become alone in the home and become more depressed. One day we went to the temple and I met one senior who explained about the senior center in Naperville and the free lunch program. Then I contacted the center and we started the adult day program in 2010.

She appreciates the work done by the employees at the center. She is always smiling, happy and enjoys helping other senior members. She is proud to be a member of our senior Center and is thankful to all employees.
He is always enthusiastic in preparing to share his views on all the different topics that we keep for discussions in the zoom meetings with all the seniors and he actively participates in all the other ADS activities. Even during lockdown in these Covid times, he became more tech savvy and learned how to come on zoom for social interaction, daily during the week.

Our services UMAS offers two main services to the elderly population. One is In Homecare Services (IHS) and the other is Adult Day Care Services (ADS). We have 12 office locations around Chicagoland and a 40+ fleet of vehicles that help us provide services to the elderly.
Homecare Program As you get older maintaining your independence and living in your own home can become near impossible as everyday chores become more & more difficult. Our homecare program helps you keep your independence from the privacy & comfort of your own home. We match families with caregivers that share your culture and create a care plan built around your needs. We want you to be able to live in your home comfortably, for as long as possible, without the burdensome costs of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. With over 2,700 highly-trained staff, we can find the one that will become like family to you. Our caregivers assist with chores around the house including cooking, shopping, personal grooming, and transportation to medical appointments, when necessary.

Adult Day Care Program Getting older doesn’t mean being lonely or slowing down. Your golden years can be a great time! Our adult day care centers provide a venue for the elderly to get involved in structured and fun-filled activities. We provide breakfast, hot lunch and snacks to our participants. On-site medical monitoring is available by trained nurses. Yoga & fitness sessions, health education and seminars, recreational activities and round trip transportation services from their home to the centers by our experienced drivers are also available free of charge for those who qualify. Come join the party at one of our 6 convenient Chicagoland locations. Our ADS Coordinators are specially trained to take care of the elderly. We also have a nurse on staff at every location for regular checkups and in case any emergency should arise. A typical day at UMAS begins with the Morning Prayer and exercise to refresh the body and the soul which is followed by a healthy breakfast. Seniors then read newspapers, arts & crafts or solve puzzles based on their interest. A nutritious lunch is served every day at our kitchen which is followed by hearty discussions over any topic of interest. Seniors can either play games or watch television based on their interest. The day ends with evening tea and snacks and everybody parts with a promise to meet the next day. We also provide transportation free of charge as a service.
Door to Door Transportation We provide door to door pick-up and drop-off services in comfortable vans and curb to curb assistance by our drivers for our participants.

This year we focused on technology and controlled systems to become more agile. We also increased rates and provided PPE for our Caregivers to support and protect them during the pandemic. Funding Utilization
As a Provider in the Homecare Network of the Illinois Department of Aging (IDOA), we are required to meet strict fiscal guidelines. One of the most important guidelines is to ensure that the majority of funding received is used for Direct Service cost which goes directly to our homecare aides.

One of the more overlooked services we provide is that of employment opportunities. Over the last 28 years we have trained and educated thousands of employees. For many immigrants, we have been their first experience in the U.S. job market because of cultural and language barriers many have used the skills learned at UMAS to propel their careers.
As our Adult Day Care Program continues to expand new vehicles to transport seniors need to be added to our fleet regularly. Last year alone, our Drivers logged over 555,936 miles total! 2020 2019

Progress Through Data When COVID hit in 2020, in-person work changed dramatically. At UMAS, we quickly moved our staff to a work-from-home setup. While doing this, we realized we had many inefficiencies causing us lost productivity. We had many disconnected systems that housed the same information leading to duplicate work and non-complying data issues.
We decided to look for a full-fledged Human Resource Information System (HRIS) that can recruit, onboard, do payroll, and maintain an employee record throughout their tenure.

Another inefficiency we wanted to improve was the process flow of data changes and giving autonomy to our workers to access and view/change their data in real-time. Before, a simple demographic change would have to go from worker to supervisor to manager to accounting and then into the system. That is 4 to 5 touchpoints which lead to a lot of input error.
Payroll System was not adequate for what we were envisioning for our future. It was limited in its technology offerings and did not support the type of integrations we were looking for. We decided to look for a full-fledged Human Resource Information System (HRIS) that can recruit, onboard, process payroll, and maintain employee records throughout their tenure.
During the latter half of 2020, we realized we needed a Single Source of Truth or a Master Database. This ‘Master System’ will house our data and other systems would be dependent on it by having a one-way connection from the Master to the dependents. This Master System must be highly controlled to ensure that proper data is authored, as well as contain all the relevant data needed downstream. We created a workflow diagram and went on a journey to see how we could get there.
We spent a great deal of time researching which included multiple system demonstrations and sandbox testing. Going through these exercises, we realized we needed a few key things: One backend database; An open platform for third-party integrations; User-friendliness; A good implementation and support team. After it was all said and done, we chose Paylocity.
The first step was to see if the existing systems we had in place would work to achieve these goals. We started talking to our Payroll vendor and working with their backend team to try and get the different types of connections needed (SFTP and API). Our IT team quickly realized that our

Human Resources Information System (HRIS)
Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) System - This system records time and attendance for our Home Care Aides. All data entered in Paylocity for Home Care Aides now automatically gets synced to our EVV system on a nightly basis. Payroll data is then imported into Paylocity, and due to this, Home Care Aides are paid faster and at a higher frequency.

Online Training – This system is used to administer online training for our Home Care Aides. Once the employee is entered in Paylocity that data now automatically gets synced and different training modules get assigned to the Home Care Aide depending on their status.

Retirement Savings System - This database handles retirement savings (Roth IRA). After payroll is run and the deductions are made, our Retirement System gets updated automatically.

Employment Verification - This database holds data of employment and pay data of our staff. After payroll, this system gets updated with the most recent pay information and third-party verifiers are able to refer to this database for any employment or income verification needed rather than going through our HR/Accounting Staff.

Time & Labor (Admin) – Before our switch over to Paylocity, we used a completely disconnected, outdated system that caused many headaches. The old system could not manage PTO and was not user-friendly. Now all Time & Labor for admin staff is handled directly in the new system and linked to Payroll.

NEW Devon LOCATION
2520 W DEVON AVENUE, CHICAGO, IL 60659 Back to where it all began! It took us 20+ years but we’re back on Devon Avenue in the heart of Little India. We are opening our offices in a state-of-the-art, 10,000 square foot space that once housed the Viceroy of India restaurant and the Balaban and Katz Cine Theatre which was built in 1937. It was designed by famed architects Rapp & Rapp and could seat 1,000 people. Once we started the demolition inside we uncovered the historic bones of this theater and wanted to maintain that character throughout the building. This is evident in the original exposed brick walls and the preservation of the second-story concrete balcony in our dining area. Once we saw this huge, curved balcony, we changed all our interior plans to make sure the balcony was

preeminent in the finished design. UMAS, and its lead designer Prashant Kumar, meticulously worked out every aspect of the design and future use. Every area is its own unique space with different colors and different architectural features on the ceiling and different cues on the flooring. The interior of the building has a unique blend of soothing colors that tastefully matches the fashionable furniture.

The inauguration of the new construction was unwrapped with the traditional Pooja on July 1, 2021. Executive Director, Dr. Santosh Kumar, Mr. Prashant Kumar (IT Director), Mr. Sagar Kumar (Operation’s Director), and Jonathan Jackson (son of the Hon. Rev. Jesse Jackson), piously performed the rituals to seek blessings for the new building! It is officially opening in Fall 2021!

Shrenik Dalal Branch Manager Shrenik Dalal is the manager of our Chicago location since 2017. Shrenik was born and raised in Gujarat, India. He migrated to the US in 1980. He has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Business from India. He joined Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in 1981 and worked there for 22 years. He also worked in the real estate industry for 12 years. His experience, ethics and organizational skills are an asset to our company. He is involved in managing various MAFS and UMAS programs in Chicago along with implementing all office procedures to ensure smooth operation in our busy work environment. His hands-on experience and vision help him to be the successful person he is today. His goal is to bring joy and happiness in every senior participant at the Universal Metro. Jahnavi Bavisi Branch Manager Jahnavi Bavisi is a Manager at Universal Metro Asian Services and has been working with UMAS since 2004. Prior to working with UMAS she worked at College of DuPage as a Staff Service Supervisor. She started with UMAS as a computer teacher and prior to becoming a Manager she worked as a CCP Supervisor for several years. She is responsible for all office procedures, and uses her organizational skills to ensure smooth operations in a busy work environment. Her consistent and committed work ethic have contributed to her success at UMAS for the past 14 years. Jahnavi has created the best team under her exceptional training and supervision. Born and educated in Mumbai, India. She did her graduation in commerce from the Kandivali Education Society in 2001. Ms. Bavisi has a vision of inspiring others, and she sees her parents image in every senior and it gives her joy to serve them.

She manages 2 locations and is responsible for the daily activities of each department and ensures that all of them work to the best of their abilities. Neelam was born and educated in Mumbai, India. She graduated as an Interior Designer from SNDT University in 1987. Providing services to the senior citizens through her job at UMAS and receiving their thanks gives her peace and joy and she comes to work every morning with a smile on her face.

Executive Director Mrs. Santosh Kumar is counselor, attorney, professor, community leader and business woman. She is popularly known as “Mother Teresa” of Chicago. Mrs. Kumar completed her Bachelor of Science in 1969, Bachelor of Law in 1972 and Master’s in Law from AMU in 1974. At the age of 22, Mrs. Kumar became an attorney. She was professor of Law for 11 years in Jaipur University and finally migrated to the United States in 1985. She earned her Law Graduate degree from the US in 1989 and a Computer Desktop Publishing degree in 1992. She is founder and Executive Director of Metropolitan Asian Family Services (MAFS) and Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS), both working for the wellbeing of the Indian community. Years ago, she set out on a journey to make a difference in the world face by face and what she initiated with a small group of people and a few resources, is now one of the biggest Social Service organization with 12 facilities for seniors with a full spectrum of services with a pool of hard-working individuals helping the community. Mrs. Kumar’s versatility and her restless efforts to wipe out social injustice from the community were recognized by various national & international institutions. Niles Township honored her Leadership & Excellence in serving seniors, the needy and the disable. She was recognized as “Top Woman of Chicago” by US Congressman Danny Davis, 7th Congressional District on International Women Day of 2016 for her Outstanding Leadership. The Pillar of Service Award (2009) was given at the Governor’s conference by Charles Johnson, Director of IDOA for Outstanding Leadership & Advocacy on behalf of Ethnic Older Adults by CLESE. She was honored with the “Jewel of Rajasthan” award for her pioneering work in serving, leading and enhancing lives of needy people in Chicago, IL, USA. Recently, she was given the “Exemplary Community Service” award for her outstanding and dedicated service to the general welfare of the Asian American community in the State of Illinois by Asian American Coalition of Chicago.

Covid-19 Response The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and serve. At UMAS it’s our duty to serve our community and we had to find new and innovative ways to reach out and support those most vulnerable and in need while doing our utmost to protect our staff. Ever since March 18, 2020, UMAS Adult Day Service (ADS) centers were ordered to be closed by the State of Illinois due to the pandemic that has clenched all nations worldwide. The agency could not just close and forget or ignore the elder ethnic populations being serviced through our six ADS centers. In turn, what we began doing since day one was to keep in touch with the ADS participants as well as continuing to provide healthy nutritious meals. Ethnic meals are prepared in our very own kitchens by the dedicated cook/staff/drivers who pack and deliver to ADS participants daily. Our seniors are accustomed to gathering and having fresh and healthy meals prepared every day at our locations. Now, due to the COVID restrictions, they are homebound. However, we want to make sure that the seniors get the same nutritious and home-cooked meals, which

include breakfast, lunch, and snacks, delivered to their homes as per their needs. We are happy and proud to say that we have delivered more than 62,000 healthy homecooked meals to over 20,000 seniors during this lockdown period and are continuing to do so. Our staff has put their own lives in danger while fulfilling and continuing the services to the seniors. Daily wellness checks for our seniors are carried out by phone by our nurses, Activity Coordinators, and Activity Aides, and other office staff. Our ADS centers conduct Zoom meetings with seniors daily. This virtual meeting consists of singing, prayers, storytelling, memory games/riddles, bingo, exercise, talks from the heart, telling jokes, word games, and sharing food recipes. ADS staff connect at least 5 to 6 hours per day with either a group of participants

and or one on one phone calls. Seniors are happy and look forward to the daily phone calls, Zoom meetings, or WhatsApp meetings. For participants who are unable to Zoom or WhatsApp, office staff call them daily and chat with them to make sure they are doing well. This way UMAS is making sure that our clients are positive and hopeful during these crucial times. Who knew our seniors were so tech-savvy? We are continuing with In-Home care services as usual following the guidelines of the state. We have conducted more than 270,000 in-home care visits and are safely continuing to do so. As a Senior Care Provider, we have re-aligned to the new safety measures for our facilities to re-open the programs and continue daily operations as and when the State allows us, as per IDOA, CDC and IDPH regulations. We have taken all safety measures for seniors, staff, and drivers, bought sanitizing ‘fogging’ machines to spray a mist of disinfectant on all surfaces of the facilities frequently. Bathrooms were retrofitted in all the ADS locations with touchless toilets, faucets, soap dispensers, and dryers. We have made it mandatory for the Drivers and seniors to wear surgical masks. Drivers are directed to check the Senior’s temperature with an Infrared thermometer and are required to disinfect the vehicles after every use. Seniors will always maintain a 6ft distance in the locations wearing a mask, washing their hands, and using hand sanitizers. Also, we have 2 medical-grade HEPA filters at each ADS site.
ADS Reopening We are extremely happy to welcome our Adult Daycare Senior Participants back to our ADS locations. April 26, 2021, was our seniors’ first day back, after staying homebound for 13 months and 11 days due to the pandemic. Now that our Adult Day Care Services have recommenced, we are taking extra precautionary measures strictly adhering to IDOA protocol to keep our seniors safe and healthy. We are happy to have our seniors back at our centers with full vigor and cheer. WELCOME BACK, SENIORS!

On July 07, 2021, our Driver Bakul Patel was going about his normal day dropping off Adult Day Care Participants when one of his passengers, Parvesh Malik, became unresponsive halfway through the ride. Instead of panicking, Bakul took a deep breath and called 911 and the ADS Nurse right away. Within five minutes the paramedics arrived and assessed our Participant and sent him to the ER. Our ADS coordinator followed the paramedics
Good morning Mukesh Ji. I am glad to inform you that my father, Mr. Parvesh Malik, is doing well. He is recovering fast and should be back to normal soon. He has follow-up appointments this week with doctors and from next week (if all goes well) he plans to start coming to the UMAS center after that. I would like to request you to pass along a Big Thank You to Mr. Bakul Patel from my father and my entire family as his presence of mind was very helpful in saving the life of my father. The embolic stroke that my father could be very damaging to his body and life if the medical assistance had not been called right away. Mr. Patel deserves all accolades and appreciation.

Dear UMAS team, I want to take this opportunity to thank the agency, the HCA - Varshaben Raythatha, and her supervisor - Shilpaben Doshi. I wholeheartedly want to thank all they have done for my parents Harilal and Padma Thakkar. They consistently received homecare services for more than 6 years and I am very grateful for all of UMAS’s support and care. Kudos to Varshaben especially, an HCA’s job is very challenging. To care for seniors, their likes, and dislikes, etc. requires patience. In times like COVID, the support we received from the HCA is unparalleled. She showed up without fail and assisted my elderly parents with a brave face, all while following the required safety protocols . My parents felt safe and secure under Varshaben’s care. Next, special kudos to Shilpaben for the coordination. Her speedy response to every situation has not gone unnoticed.
