OSNOVNA ŠKOLA „VUK KARADŽIĆ” - SOČANICA

N

Dušan Mijatović (14) Of all seasons, summer arouses special feelings in me. And why is that? I don’t even know myself, simply, love is in the air. Everything is alive and everybody is happy. There are many water games as well as land activities in summertime.

Milena Radosavljević (13) Neki vole leto, neki zimu, neki jesen, a proleće svi. Meni omiljeno godišnje doba je - ZIMA. Ona prava, kada pada sneg, ne mnogo, oko 20-30 cantimetara i škripti pod čizmom, a suva hladnoća pri udisaju skuplja nos, temperatura -5 do 0. Sve lepo i čisto. Kuće pokrivene snegom, livade u belom, i teško je primetiti nešto osim očaravajuće beline. Milena Radosavljević (13) Some prefer summer, others love winter or fall, but everybody loves spring. My favorite season is winter. The real one, when it snows, but not much, about 20 to 30 centimeters, the sound of snow crunching under your boots, and dry cold shrinks the nose as we breath, with temperatures from -5 to 0. All is nice and clean. Houses covered in snow, meadows turn white, and it gets hard to notice anything else but enchanting whiteness.

Aleksa Janković (13) Od svih godišnjih doba najviše volim jesen. Volim pucketanje lišća i grančica pod mojim cipelama, volim miris zrelog voća i duge šetnje pored reke. Aleksa Janković (13) Of all the seasons I prefer autumn. I love the sound of leaves and branches crackling under my shoes, I love the smell of ripe fruits and long walks by the river. Fall is neither to hot nor too cold, it seems to have found the perfect measure. Placed between two seasons that are alltogether opposite, it boldly becomes the queen of all seasons because it weaves the beauty of all of them into itself.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL “VUK KARADZIC” - SOCANICA

A

bout five kilometres away from Leposavic’s centre, on the right side of Ibër River, lies the picturesque village of Socanica, where the Elementary School “Vuk Karadzic” , has been operating since 1918 and which we will present to you as the school of the month. In fact, it should be noted, that a special pleasure to our team was that our visit came as a response to an invitation from the students of this school, and we would like to take this opportunity to also express our gratitude to them for the hospitality shown to our team. Regarding the history of the school, Director Dragan Radovanovic, graduated machinery engineer, informed us that for a long time the school has operated as a primary four year school only, which used to have satellites in four other locations, out of which, due to the large decline in the number of students, today only the ones in Vuçe and in Upper Socanica are still operating. “In the village of Borcan, we have a very interesting school building that we have preserved from being completely ruined. It has been proposed to us to transform this building into a recreational and sports centre that could be used by schools throughout Kosovo, which could come and conduct outdoor lessons for a week. This school is located at an altitude of 1000m. It has a large yard and is equipped with water supply, electricity and a medical centre,” Mr. Radovanovic explained.

Questionnaire

school of the month The “Vuk Karadzic” school building exists since 1956. Initially it did not meet completely the school requirements, but with time it was renovated and thus, today, it meets the needs of the students of this village. Today the school has 350 students, in total. They attend their lessons from the first up to the eighth grade, and there are 52 employees who are in charge of the teaching process. According to the director of this school, Mr. Radovanovic, the biggest advantage of the school is that the students are diligent and show very good results in their studies. “What makes me very proud with our students and our work here at the school is discipline, which we have reached to instil in our students. However, I would stress that the credit for this goes to the parents and all residents of the village who are committed to ensure that these children have this excellent behaviour and discipline, not only at school, but also in their daily lives. Without a doubt, such a commitment gives its results at the school as well,” Mr. Radovanovic added. Additionally, he stressed that he is satisfied with the success of the students, and believes that the fact the school has proper labs for conducting the lessons has a significant impact on the students’ engagement. Regarding the qualification of teachers, 99% of them have the proper qualifications, i.e. they have graduated in the faculties in the corresponding departments for the subject they teach. At the end of our visit, Mr. Radovanovic reveals one of his plans for the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the school, which will take place in 2018. Together with his colleagues they have planned to get involved in publishing a documentary film about their school, a film that would be directed by the well-known film director Emir Kusturica. In the end, Director Radovanovic advised all the young people in Kosovo to read as much as possible and take care of themselves, because they have their whole lives in front of them, and at this age it is the time when their decisions and their actions are decisive for their future.

WHAT SEASON OF THE YEAR DO YOU LIKE MOST AND WHY?

Leonora Krstović (13) Najviše volim proleće. Priroda se budi, sve oživljava i cveta. Ptice se vraćaju svojim gnezdima. Sneg se topi i dani su sve duži. Ogolele grane drveća dobijaju nova lišća a livade lepu zelenu travu. Leonora Krstović (13) My favourite season is spring. Nature wakes up, everything comes to life and starts blooming. Birds are returning to their nests. The snow is melting and days are getting longer. Bare branches start getting new leaves and meadows get nice green grass. Spring is known for its beautiful smell of linden tree and lilac.

Anastasija Jevtić (13) Winter is the best season for me. The Snow, the cold, the silence and sleeping nature. Things I love about this time of the year are decorations put up all over the town, lamps, wool socks, and Christmas movies ... they kinda remind me of the warmth of home, of the times when the entire family used to get to the same bed and we watched Christmas movies together and laughed.

Nikola Mladenović (14) Volim zimu i praznike jer tada bude najviše božićnih filmova. Topla soba, TV i nešto za pojesti, a kroz prozor baciš pogled i vidiš sneg kako lagano pada. Uživancija! Od zimskih sportova najviše volim skijanje. Nikola Mladenović (14) I love winter and winter holidays because there are loads of Christmas movies to watch. A warm room, TV set and something to eat, and when you take a look out the window you see snow gently falling. What a treat!. Of all winter sports, I love skiing the most.

ALKOHOL I ADOLESCENTI

N

6 for you

ALCOHOL AND ADOLESCENTS

T

here is no doubt that of all the stages humans go through during their life cycle, adolescence is the most difficult one. This is the period when our childhood ends and we gradually begin to mature and become adults. This transition is not so easy because after all during this time we go through radical changes both physically and mentally. When you add to this equation the access to and consumption of very harmful substances such as alcohol, the consequences may often result in events that will shape the rest of your life. Despite this, if you do a search on the Internet about alcohol and teenagers all the results and statistics that will come up show that adolescents try alcohol for the first time between the age of 13 and 16. Unfortunately, Kosovo is not an exemption from this trend. The only difference being that in comparison to other European countries, Kosovo has a considerable lower level of alcohol use. This is best confirmed by Kosovo’s ESPAD (European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs) Report, which was prepared in 2011 thanks to the financial support of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addictions. In this report, about 13% of the respondents who were adolescents between the age of 15 and 16 reported that they had at least one glass of beer by the age of 13 or even earlier. What is even more worrying in this report is that one in three respondents stated that it would be very easy for them to get a beer if they wanted; whereas, one in

four respondents stated the same about getting wine. In the same survey children were also asked what was their most positive and negative experiences from their alcohol consumption. Being sick was reported as the most negative experience by 77% of the respondents, whereas, 73% reported having fun as the most positive experience. The latter response is one of the biggest myths about alcohol, because it is a well-known fact that alcohol is a depressant. This means that those who consume it have a high chance of developing depression. Depression is in fact only one of the many serious health issues caused by alcohol consumption. Other diseases directly related to alcohol are: addiction, liver cirrhosis, dementia, heart diseases, cancer, weakened immune system, etc. Moreover, just like any other drug, in addition to causing many health problems, alcohol has other social and economic consequences which are just as worrying as those related to health. The first and most obvious one is that consumption of alcohol causes both economic and social losses. After all, drinking is not cheap, and it is a well-known fact that drunk people are more prone to violent behaviour. This in turn leads to disturbance of public peace and order which usually end with arrests. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) abuse with alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths annually. The World Health Organization also claims that on average, each person in the world above the age of fifteen drinks 6.2 litres of pure alcohol per year. However, when we deduct the number of people that do not drink, which is about 62% of the population, it turns out that those who actually drink consume on average seventeen litres of pure alcohol annually. One thing is for sure: parents, teachers, and adults in general will all try to say things to dissuade teenagers and young people from using alcohol. However, some 600 hundred years ago, in his famous tragedy Othello, Shakespeare probably gave the best reason why we should avoid drinking: “I would not put a thief in my mouth to steal my brains.

Perunike

Perunike simbolizuje ljubav i toplinu.

Orhideje

U Kini su orhideje simbol velikog broja dece, a takođe označavaju prefinjenost i lepotu.

8 for you

(Izvor: www.sheknows.com)

TO MUM WITH LOVE

Irises

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Have you bought your mom a gift yet? Give your mother a special bouquet, taking into consideration the significance of each type of flower. Here are some of the best flowers for your mom on Mother’s Day.

The iris symbolizes affection and warmth. These gorgeous flowers come in a rainbow of colours, though white and blue irises tend to be more popular for Mother’s Day.

Orchids

In China, orchids are a symbol for many children, and they also signify refinement and beauty. Every mother will love a bouquet of these exotic flowers for Mother’s Day.

be transplanted outdoors for the full sunlight and healthy humidity that they need.

To mum with love

No matter what type of flowers you buy for your mom on Mother’s Day, give them with love. Write her a personal card or note instead of store-bought verse to tell her how much you love and appreciate her. (Source: www.sheknows.com)

Carnations

Many believe carnations are a symbol of a mother’s eternal love. Pink carnations, as well as red and white ones, often comprise Mother’s Day bouquets.

Tulips

Tulips are traditionally associated with new life, charity and spring. With their grace and beauty, these flowers are always a popular option for Mother’s Day.

Lilies

Though lilies are normally considered an Easter flower, they are often used on Mother’s Day as well. Many florists add a few calla lilies or white lilies to mixed bouquets on Mother’s Day.

Other factors

Roses

Roses have long been associated with motherhood, making them a popular choice on Mother’s Day. Roses were sacred to the Greek goddess, seen as the ideal mother. Pink roses signify grace, elegance and appreciation, while yellow roses symbolize friendship and joy, so both colours are perfect to give your mom.

Lilacs

Mother’s Day flowers don’t end with roses. Another elegant choice is the lilac. You may have heard that lilacs symbolize new love (which is why they are popular at weddings). However, they also signify love between mother and child, making these beautiful flowers a special choice on Mother’s Day.

Symbolism shouldn’t be the only factor when you’re shopping for Mother’s Day flowers. Also consider your mother’s favourite colour: Daffodils or sunflowers are pretty choices for moms who love yellow; blue hydrangeas, pink Gerbera daisies and red peonies are also colourful flowers that your Mom will love. Also take into account the month in which your mom was born and use this birth month guide to flowers to pick the right blooms.

Blooming plants

Bouquets aren’t the end-all when it comes to Mother’s Day flowers. Also shop for blooming plants such as azaleas and hyacinths for Mother’s Day - they’re beautiful and easy to care for, and last longer than a traditional bouquet. Consider outdoor plants and bushes that your mom can plant in her garden as well, such as miniature roses. Mini roses are often sold as houseplants but can

IGOR GARNIER - “PRATITE SVOJE SNOVE”

I

For You: Ako biste jednoga dana vladali svetom, šta biste promenili? For You: Koji ste film više puta gledali? Igor: ‘Interstellar!’ Iskrena preporuka. For You: Koje su Vaše želje za Aladinovu lampu? Igor: Eh... recimo, iste te

lampe za sve dobre ljude. For You: U kom istorijskom periodu biste voleli da živite? For You: Jel ljubav samo reč? For You: Ne možete da

živite bez…? Igor: Klavira!

a u stvari je povrće. A to je lubenica. Kada dođe sezona, jedem je svaki dan. Čak se i moja izdavačka kuća zove “Watermelon Recordings”.

For You: O čemu razmišljate kad ste pred ogledalom?

For You: Kojih pet slavnih ličnosti biste pozvali na večeru? Igor: Bon Jovi-a, Ed Sheeran-a, Axwell-a, Calvin Harris-a i Joachim Garraud-a.

For You: Ispričajte nam nešto interesantno o Vama a da drugi još ne znaju? For You: Koji je Vaš omiljeni lik iz bajke/priče? Igor: Robin Hood. Junak iz engleskih narodnih priča. For You: Koje slatkiše najviše volite? Igor: Plazmu! Svaki dan pojedem po malo. For You: Omiljeno voće i povrće? Igor: Svi misle da je voće

For You: Omiljena pesma za đuskanje, film za gledanje i najbolja balada svih vremena? Igor: Axwell – ‘Center Of The Universe’ (Remode), ‘Mr. Nobody’, Bon Jovi – ‘Bed Of Roses’.

IGOR GARNIER - “FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS”

I

gor Garnier (born 16 February 1990 in Belgrade, Serbia) is a music producer, DJ, composer and arranger. His first creative encounter with music happened when he was six years old, when he began playing piano at a music school. As a very successful pianist with a number of international awards, he decided to take his musical skills to a higher level. In a music school he studied music production, theory and piano, which gave him a general knowledge of music. “It was around this time that a sudden expansion of electronic music took place in our region, and we were given tasks to make a song for our exams. Thus, rather spontaneously, I made my first song of the genre, and so I continued,” Igor relates while recalling his musical beginnings. We invite you to take some time and read this exclusive interview.

For You: If one day you had the opportunity to rule the world, what would you change? Igor: I don’t know what kind of a ruler I’d be, I never really thought about this... I would probably get down to music, and for the rest, I would find trustworthy people to deal with that. For You: What movie have you watched more than one time? Igor: ‘Interstellar!’ One of the best movies I’ve ever seen! Sincere recommendations. For You: What would be

your wishes for Aladdin’s lamp? Igor: Umm... say, the same lamps for all the good people For You: Which historical period would you like to live in? Igor: I wish I had lived in the Seventies - the spirit, the music, the general atmosphere of the period, seem just right for me. For You: Is love only a word? Igor: Love is a word, but a word that gives meaning to everything. I create music, write and compose out of love.

For You: You couldn’t live without…? Igor: Piano! Regardless of whether it’s a keyboard, electric piano, any sort! I have to play at least something every day. For You: What do you think about when you stand in front of a mirror? Igor: I usually think about not cutting myself with a razor. For You: Tell us something interesting about yourself that others don’t know yet? Igor: Most people probably don’t know that I’m in charge of fixing computer problems to all of my friends, and their friends, and so on . For You: What is your favourite fairy-tale/tale character? Igor: Robin Hood, hero of English folk tales. For You: What is your favourite sweet treat? Igor: Plazma! I eat a little bit of it every day. For You: Your favourite fruit and vegetable? Igor: Everybody thinks it is a fruit, but in fact it’s a vegetable.

It’s watermelon. When watermelon season comes, I eat it every day. Even my record label is called “Watermelon Recordings.” For You: Which five celebrities would you invite to dinner? Igor: Bon Jovie, Ed Sheeran, Axwell, Calvin Harris and Joachim Garraud. For You: What is your favourite song to dance to, movie to watch, and the best slow song of all times? Igor: Axwell – ‘Center Of The Universe’ (Remode), ‘Mr. Nobody,’ Bon Jovi – ‘Bed Of Roses.’ For You: What do you think about young people in the region and what is your message to them? Igor: Young people in the region have an increasing tendency to explore music, and in general everything else, by themselves on the internet, and ignore what they are being served by the media, something that I really like. My message to them would be - listen to good music, follow your dreams and work on them.

Nije ni čudo da to i dalje predstavlja problem u gotovo svim zemljama, čak i onima u kojim prava žena imaju dugotrajnu i konsolidovanu tradiciju.

H C R A 8 M onal Women’s Day th

he 8th of March, or the International Women’s Day, is observed all over the world as a sign of respect for the women’s struggles for their rights. The origin of this day is closely connected to the protest held in 1908 in the United States of America by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union. This protest was organized among others to seek better working conditions for the women that had to work up to ten hours per day for ridiculously low wages. A year later on 28 February 1909, in New York to be accurate, in honour of this protest, the Socialist Party of America observed for the first time the Women’s Day. The idea to establish the International Women’s Day was proposed for the first time during the International Women’s Conference, which was held in August 1910 in Denmark. This proposal became a reality the following year on 11 March 1911 when people in four European states (Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland) observed the International Women’s Day, thus making it a truly international celebration. The celebration of this day continued in various countries around the world with a different intensity until 1977. The United Nations General Assembly invited all its member states to declare the 8th of March as the International Women’s Day. Since then, one can claim that a lot has improved as modern societies around the world observe the 8th of March - the International Women’s Day - to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women. Yet despite all the achievements, we must not forget that it was a little over one hundred years ago that the main issue of women’s rights activists around the world was the right to vote. Today the concept of the women’s rights encompasses issues such as gender equality, violence against women, human trafficking, equal inheritance rights, and the list goes on. You’ve probably heard that men are paid more than women over their lifetimes. But what does that mean? In 2014, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 79 percent of what men were paid, a gap of 21 percent. The gap has narrowed since the 1970s, due largely to women’s progress in education and workforce participation and to men’s wages rising at a slower rate. But progress has stalled in recent years, and the pay gap does not appear likely to go away anytime soon. Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s female leader who for many years has been fighting against national tyranny, is bravely struggling to extend human rights to the people. She has become the leader of a nonviolent movement, deserving awards such as

Internati

the Nobel Peace Prize. Violence against women is, collectively, violent acts that are primarily or exclusively committed against women. Sometimes considered a hate crime, this type of violence targets a specific group with the victim’s gender as a primary motive. This type of violence is genderbased, meaning that the acts of violence are committed against women expressly because they are women. The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women states that “violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women”, and that “violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men.” Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, declared in a 2006 report posted on the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) website that “Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone known to her.” In many countries and cultures around the world women do not have equal inheritance rights. This means that in these countries when a man dies, it is his adult sons who are entitled to his property at the expense of his daughters. Women’s inheritance rights remain one of the main challenges of the development of Kosovo’s society. Kosovo has approved laws which guarantee equal rights for men and women. Notwithstanding, this parity in principal is not easily achievable in reality. It is not a mystery that this is still an issue in almost all the Countries, even those where women’s rights have the most long-lasting and consolidated tradition. Women’s full and equal participation in the political and economic arena is fundamental to democracy and justice, which people are demanding. Equal rights and opportunity underpin healthy economies and societies. Statisticians say that in nations where women have been excluded from power there are increased chances of wars and turmoil. On the 8th of March, International Women’s Day, NATO - KFOR reaffirm their commitment to women’s rights and move forward with courage and determination in order to defend human rights, the inherent dignity and worth of the human person, and the equal rights of men and women in Kosovo.

“Po prirodi sam štreber kako me prijatelji “zezaju”.

(Izvor: www.blic.rs & www.novosti.rs)

SONJA PETROVIĆ THE GOLDEN BASKETBALLER

now I should have the character to stay there. Serious injury, a decrease of power, required skill to rise again.” These intimate, motivational words in the corner of the home page site of Sonja Petrovic are as if they were copied from her diary. The girl who at age 23 nearly ended her career, and who at age 26 climbs the European throne. She always plays to the very best of her ability. For many she resembles Dejan Bodiroga, to others she is a female Nemanja Bjelica.

She is far from being unknown in the world of basketball. But women’s basketball is unfortunately only sporadically topic of the day. And just so the general public was surprised when at the European Championship in Hungary and Romania it was finally something better acquainted with Sonja Petrovic. Who is in fact Sonja? Sonja Petrovic is one of the best professional basketball players in the world. Valedictorian, golden basketball player, but her career was almost finished when she was 23 year old. Two serious knee injuries forced her to think that this is the end. For many it would be the end after two anterior cruciate ligament ruptures, but not for Sonja Petrovic.

S

he was born on February 18th 1989 in Belgrade, daughter of Radisav and Nevenka. She has sister, Milena, who is two years older. She began playing basketball in “Cukaricki” club, which was founded and coached by her father, then SecretaryGeneral of the Basketball Federation of Yugoslavia. For the Serbian national team she played more than 100 matches and in 2007 she was named the best young player in Europe. “Talent and work brought me to the top,

Valedictorian On the pitch she deserves a ten and little is known that in elementary school she was one of the best pupils or a valedictorian and also one of the best pupils of her generation at the high school - III Gymnasium Belgrade (“Vukovac”, which means that absolutely all her grades were the best (5). “I’m a nerd by nature and my friends are ‘teasing’ me about it. I love to win and be the best in everything I do. Parents often say “prepare five exams with sixes for one midterm” but no. I will always go for less quantity and more quality. I was lucky that parents taught me of certain values. Dad was in charge of basketball and mother was in charge of education and not for a moment did they allowed me to forget the importance of this aspect of life. While I was in Serbia basketball never had primacy, it was always a tie or the school was priority.”

intensity, but never say never. “ SUCCESS Although Petrović is a synonym for success, there is always a motive for the better. “I still believe that I’m not the best version of myself. I can be a better player than I am and this continues to push me forward. The difference is to be a great player and one that brings victories and trophies. I do not like to lose and I always look through the prism of whether to be the best or to help someone else to be the best. The important thing is that I have a career full of trophies. “ INJURIES When she breaks a finger and then scores 29 points, that is nothing compared to the injuries she won against. “I see two major knee injuries as tests that were the turning point of my career and which made me better. I did not want to whine for every injury like “ouch, no, they play, and I’m sitting on the side,” on the contrary, I used those injuries to work on myself and be even better.” MUSIC AND BOOKS She listens to “normal” music, before the game she listens to folk music, in order to be always in a good mood. As for books, she reads them depending on her mood and on what was presented to her. POLYGLOT Athletes often say that it is difficult to harmonize education and trainings, but Sonja is an example that everything can be done if you want to. She scored, passed the exams and still found time to perfect her English at the Institute of Foreign Languages. She is also solid in Russian, French and Spanish languages. MESSAGE “Failure is only one step on the road to success and that is why the current pain and sorrow, grief ... should be followed by the work, work and work.” (Source: www.blic.rs & www.novosti.rs)

SCIENTIST Sonja is a successful student of FON faculty and she has three more exams until her graduation. “I wanted to enrol in math, one more proof of what a nerd I am (laughs). As a kid, solving problems in my spare time was not really a game, but it was very interesting, because I like numbers. If I were not a basketball player, I might have been a scientist. It took my family a long time to accept that I am so successful in basketball in addition to other talents and I think that they forgave me after such a career. Upon completion of this career, I do not see myself in basketball with this

size, but they’re generous, and the app is perfectly suited for cloud photo storage since it isn’t weighed down by kitchensink cloud services (Dropbox, Box, OneDrive) or an extraneous social network (Flickr, the old Google+ app). But the real magic is in the application of Google’s search tech, organizing your pics by face, event and even object. Best of all: Google shames the iPhone’s native Photos app with better scrolling and selection tools. Now that’s thinking different.

s our iPhones got better at taking photos and our Pic apps got better Stitch at sharing them, we needed better apps to show them off - what better way to do that than with a collage? With a couple of dozen layout options and custom borders, filters and other effects, Pic Stitch has long been one of the most popular collage makers. The app is a little less relevant now that Instagram and many others have added the ability to build collages, but it’s unlikely we’d have those apps today if not for Pic Stitch paving the way.

VSCO

L

aunched as VSCO Cam in 2012, VSCO quickly set itself apart with its carefully crafted “presets” and editing controls that were meant to make iPhone photos look like they were shot on film. While the concept wasn’t new, VSCO, which got its start creating presets for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, was highly praised by professional photographers and amateurs alike for its ability to add a richness and depth to photos. Though the app’s design is beautifully minimalist, the controls aren’t the most intuitive, especially for casual users. But with more than 70 million #VSCO tags on Instagram, it remains one of the most influential photo apps to ever grace the iPhone.

Hi - Tech THE BEST IPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY APPS OF ALL TIME The iPhone’s camera has come a long way. From the 2-megapixel camera that shipped with the very first iPhone to the stunning 12-megapixel shooter on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, it’s difficult to imagine a feature being more influential than the iPhone’s camera. Perhaps more than any other aspect of the iPhone, its camera has influenced some of the most popular and widely loved apps we have today. Instagram

Y

ou’d be hard-pressed to find another iPhone app that’s anywhere near as influential as Instagram. Sure, other players were experimenting with photo sharing and filters prior to the app’s launch in 2010, but it was Instagram that perfected the format. Moreover, the app’s dominance is closely linked to the iPhone’s popularity in a way few apps can claim. Instagram, which was exclusively on the iPhone for its first two years, was one of those “magic” apps that helped make the iPhone so coveted. The app was simple, and its filtered creations were easily shareable, which helped Instagram go viral almost immediately. Its design isn’t perfect, to be sure (there’s no way to zoom, for instance), but the app changed how we think about sharing experiences, and it’s become one of the most influential social networks in the world.

The Gadime Cave, also known as Marble Cave, is a karst limestone cave in the village of Donje Gadimlje, in the municipality of Lipljan . Much of it is still unexplored.

T

he entrance to Gadime Cave was discovered in 1966 by Ahmet Diti, a villager who was cutting stones in his yard and by chance came upon a glowing hole in the ground. Upon closer examination, he was amazed to find that the glow was emanating from a cave full of crystallized stalagmites. The cave was first opened to visitors in 1976. Its total length is 1,260 m with a walkway that measures 440 m in length. The cave’s temperature varies from 9.6 to 16°C: depending on the gallery or season. The cave’s average humidity is very low. The formation of the cave is due to any number of processes that result in the hollowing out of rocks, including dissolution, mechanical weathering, volcanic activity, or even the melting of glacial ice. Karst areas cover about 10 percent of the land surface of the world, and there is widespread concern for the effect that human activity have in karst areas. The natural processes of forming the Gadime cave have continued during whole geological periods, for 200 million years. The human activities can negatively impact karst areas, including deforestation, agricultural practices, urbanization, tourism, water exploitation, mining and quarrying. Stalagmites and stalactites are its main attraction. Their creation over millions of years has made it possible for the formation of various shapes and figures which the locals have named. Some of their names will make you laugh as well as make you contemplate about their origins. Once in the cave, you can see another natural phenomenon - a 1,260 m lake. As mentioned before, the Gadime cave is about 1260 meters, with about 500 meters open to the public. There is a small office right outside a coffee shop next to the cave. The visit is provided by a guide that will walk you around the cave and point out what the rock formations look like. By several accounts, tours are available every two hours, but no one is quite sure when they start or stop. The cave is all paved and the temperature is quite cool even when it was 32°C outside, so kids may want a light jacket. The cave is lit with electric lights, but we’d heard stories of them flickering out, so throw a flashlight in the bag for peace of mind. Regarding the geological structure the cave is constituted

by different kind of rocks of different mineralogicalpetrographic content and of different ages. The oldest belong to the Palaeozoic era and are metamorphic rocks like schist and marble. The karst processes there are mainly developed in primary systems of cracks and in fissures in the carbonated rocks. While the water penetration and filtration is done through a secondary fracture system in the schist rocks. The marble limestone rocks are of Mesozoic age. Metamorphosed limestone represents massive and compact rocks but they have secondary cracks and they are divided in two blocks by tectonic faults. The orientation of the branches in the cave in southeast-northwest direction which correlates with the orientation of the tectonic fracture, which are always served as a major route for infiltration of water from the upper level to the depth. Today’s entry into the cave consists in two different horizons. The lower is very complex and consists of two parallel corridors: the upper horizon consists of two linked corridors. The marble cave is a unique Karst phenomenon in Kosovo and is very rare in the entire world. The beautiful stalactites and stalagmites are different in shape and colours and sizes. A stalactite or a stalagmite grows one millimetre in 30 thousands years and this is a spectacle of nature! Accessibility The cave is situated near the village of Donje Gadimlje (Lipjlan), on Murtur Hill, near the Klysyre River: 20 kilometres south of Prishtina on the main road to Skopje. Lt. Col.

Budite pošteni i časni, budite ljudska bića pre svega!

Y

ou all know him as Vlada, the radio DJ whose calm and composed voice has been entertaining you since 2008. During his time at Radio KFOR he has hosted different shows but the main constant in his work is his dedication to entertain and inform his listeners. Below we invite you to read what Vladica had to say about his work. • How did you become a radio presenter? It was by pure accident, back in 2001. I heard a job advert for a radio host in a local radio station. The radio station was only in the making and I was one of the first people who applied for a job at the radio. I was accepted without any problems and the rest is history. • What qualifications (education) does one need to have for this job? I think that natural talent is more important for this type of job! Of course, education is very important to be able to speak on a number of things that might be of interest to a large number of listeners. Finally, being wellinformed on topics you talk about is also necessary. • Can you describe one of your working days? After I come to work I usually spend some time preparing radio shows and looking for additional information on topics that I will talk about. The easiest,

and the best part, comes when you enter the studio and start talking! That again reminds me why I do this job! • What do you like most about your job? The best part is the show itself, taking a seat in front of the microphone, and the desire to share your good mood with as many people as possible. Telling something interesting, funny and useful to your listeners is always a goal. After all, the audience pleasure is an achievement we constantly strive for! • If you could single out one thing that helps you the most to be successful at this job, what would this be? I simply switch off all the possible negative influences and happenings that could spoil my mood! Then, in good mood, I get on with the show, and everything else comes by itself! It’s that simple!

For your good mood - Vlada

I always try (and so far I’ve been successful at it) to separate my personal and professional life! It has happened a few times that people recognize me, but it went without any euphoric reactions, which works perfectly fine for me.

• What is the most difficult part of your job? Preparing the shows can be very boring or even tiring at times, but not enough to completely distract me. In principle, this is something I am not particularly fond of.

• How do you perceive working on radio compared to the other two types of media (print and television)? I have never worked on television before, but I think that the job of a radio presenter is more demanding, because in television you have the possibility to visually present a story, while in the radio you describe a story in order for the listener to create a picture of it!

• How does the nature of your job and your working hours affect your personal life? Does it ever happen that people in the streets recognize you for your job and what is the reaction in such cases?

• Would you recommend this profession to young people, and why? I absolutely recommend this job because it is dynamic, fun, it allows plenty of room for improvisation, which in turn provides

many ways to express your creativity and imagination. • If you could choose again, would you go for this profession again? Unless I had the opportunity to become an astronaut, I cannot see myself doing any other job but this one. • Tell us about a special episode from your previous experience in this job? Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is the thrill and the nervousness I felt when I first sat in front of the microphone of Radio KFOR, although I already had quite considerable experience from other radio stations. • What is your message to young people? Whichever job you choose to pursue, try to enjoy it and to bring the best out of it! Be honest and honorable, be human above all!

Greetings from Dragana! I am a student of Gymnasium in Osojane. I would like to tell you many things about myself, but I will tell you just the basics. My favourite band is “Rebelde” and it is from the series of the same name that I love to watch. I also like to listen to a singer Radmila Manjolovic very much. The actress that I like the best is Roberta Pardo and I would like to have a poster of her. When it comes to sport, I like to play volleyball and football the most and that is what I do when I have free time. Whenever I can, I use the opportunity to fix my room, spend time with my friends and with my best girlfriend. I read magazines often and make different hairstyles. That is why I have firmly decided to open a hairstyling saloon someday. Dragana Dubic Gymnasium - Osojane
