OH HELLO So, I doubt I’m alone when I say 2016 has had its up and its downs. Parts of this year have been so tough on me, my family and friends. That is why I am welcoming this Christmas with even more open arms than usual. I feel like I really need this one! My older brother’s birthday is on Christmas Day, so my family has some really special traditions. Yep, we celebrate this season with eggnog and birthday cake. We stay up watching movies on Christmas Eve then wish my bro a happy birthday right as the clock strikes twelve. We drink mimosas and fuzzy navels on Christmas morning. And very rarely do we ever repeat the same color-scheme for our douglas fir and home decor.
myself watching Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (read: rewatching — you know I watched it all the weekend it premiered) and indulging in all the other good stuff we curated for What We’re Into on page 90. I see my mom and me prepping for our big holiday meal with chili lime roasted sweet potatoes (recipe on page 69) and custom printed menus at each seat at the table (page 88). I see my friends laughing around a punchbowl filled with a delicious batch cocktail from Iconic Cocktails (recipes on page 78). I see myself dashing (gracefully) through the mall, dodging last-minute holiday shoppers, as I pick up gifts for everyone on my list with no stress at all thanks to the Ultimate Gift Guide starting on page 35. Lastly, I see spending time with my loved ones, hugs, kisses, peace and joy.

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO SPEND THE HOLIDAYS AWAY FROM HOME?
I
won't be home for Christmas. The holiday spirit is a sensation that I truly fall in love with each and every year. Yet, sometimes doing the same-old-same-old can get a little dull, so pumpkin-spice it up with a little holiday home away from home. For any of those asking how to do a holiday abroad, I’ve created a guide to surviving, exploring and embracing new traditions.
Getting there. Once you’ve made the decision where, it’s best to book around Thanksgiving. Conde Nast Traveler revealed that the week of November 21, historically offers the best deals. That being said, if you’re paranoid like me, I made my travel itinerary almost three months in advance and found really affordable prices. Once in the location of your preference, any interEuropean travel can be super cheap, especially when compared to traveling within the United States. Airlines like EasyJet or overnight bus services with FlixBus allow you to book tickets to other countries anywhere from 15 euro to 80 euro a ticket, even around the holiday season. Where to go. Coming from a part of the United States where the weather is hot enough to sunbathe, it’s hard to get inspired during the winter season. Cities like Strasbourg, France, Salzburg, Austria and Zermatt, Switzerland are all known for their Christmas markets, quaint and cozy lodging and having the perfect chilly weather that urges you to drink mulled wine and hot chocolate. Find a place that paints your idea of a perfect holiday backdrop. Not that I’m partial or anything, but Paris is a really great place for the holiday season. It rarely snows, so it’s not too chilly, and there are so many Christmas markets and streets decked out in lights and garlands. It’s très dreamy. What to do. Instead of searching tourist guides and travel agencies for what to do in the city of your choice, find local bloggers from the area. Anything catered toward tourists will only give you a taste of the stereotypical holiday culture. Finding local hotspots and must-see locations will give you a much more realistic picture of the place you’re visiting and will give you an exciting trip spent further away from hoards of tourists. For a recent trip to Prague, I referenced almost every single coffee shop, cocktail bar and restaurant from local bloggers. How to make it feel like home. Instead of booking a hotel, try to find an Airbnb or rental agency that can give you a real home to stay in. Having a kitchen where you can whip up your favorite home recipes will give you that sense of home you normally don’t get in a bedroom-only hotel room. Sometimes you luck out and the owner of the lodging will have decorated it for clients. If not, picking up a miniature tree or poinsettia from the local florist isn’t too expensive. Bringing or buying scented candles is my personal favorite travel essential. During the holidays, nothing makes me happier than a room that smells like cookies (Anthropologie has the most delicious oatmeal cookie candle that does the trick). What to pack. The idea of packing for winter weather can be daunting. The balance of wanting to look cute but staying warm is crucial when traveling because nothing is worse than having photos you’re not in love with, or being cold and miserable the entire trip. Here are my must-have holiday wardrobe items. 1. Comfortable but warm walking shoes such as (broken in) Docs or a sturdy loafer.

Amelia cooks, teaches, writes and can be found south of the Seine in the 7th arrondissement. 2. Your winter coat will be the biggest and bulkiest item, so only bringing one will save space. Therefore, it should go with everything. A sleek black pea coat or something a little more fun like H&M’s faux-fur jacket are perfect choices. 3. Nude tights to wear under jeans and pants for an additional layer of warmth. 4. Collared blouses or denim button downs to wear under sweaters. Many restaurants and cafes
are well heated in the winter (even the outdoor cafes normally have heat lamps) so having a blouse under your sweater gives you the option to shed the layers and stay cool. Plus the collar detail looks really nice with a cozy sweater! 5. Scarves are the winter accessory that we can have fun with. Choose a bold color or one with a lot of texture. Forever21 has a great selection of thick knit scarves that will keep you warm. Don’t forget hand and face cream for the dry & cold winter weather and your favorite holiday snacks in case you get a little homesick and need some comfort. Finally, get a travel journal for jotting down recommendations and street names. This way you don’t forget about places you might want to revisit another time. My travel notebook for Paris is filled with local recommendations and hidden gems I found on my way to other rendezvous. EMMAMAG.COM 11

Our favorite vibe for the holidays is a mix between glam and cozy. White with gold and wood accents creates that exact feeling. Here's a walkthrough of everything on our table. We started with the placements and gathered inspiration from there. We took a classic winter pattern, plaid, and gave it new life with metalic colors. Matching that pattern, we added gold plaid glassware to the table. We wanted to use our two main colors in the plates so we used some go-to white china and gold chargers. White serving dishes atop wood serving boards add a nice contast to this look. We decided to go the extra mile with shiny gold flatware and we are so glad we did. We completed each place setting with a beautiful cloth napkin in the color scheme. Once each place was set, we created a garland using extra Christmas tree trimming (you can pick it up for free (or for tips) from any Christmas tree lot) and laid it across the table to mimic a table runner. Next, we filled vases with gold bells and beautiful white and green hydrangeas. Together with the wooden, glitter-dipped trees, they make a lovely centerpiece. Lastly, we scattered some white tea lights all around the table for a romantic and cozy touch.

The weather may be cool but chokers are hot! The good news? They are fun and easy to make. All you need is to take a quick trip to your local craft store (you may even have all the supplies at home). These velvet ribbon chokers will look so chic with your holiday outfits and party dresses. They also make sweet gifts. Pick out initial charms for all of your friends and ribbon in thier favorite colors. Your friends won't believe you made it!

SUPPLIES Velvet ribbon Charm of choice, we used an initial charm (good for gifts!) Sewing needle Thread to match ribbon Scissors Ribbon ends Necklace clasp

STEPS No. 1 Measure out the amount of ribbon you’ll need by wrapping a piece around your neck. Remember: If you are using a necklace clasp, you’ll need to take an inch or two off of the ribbon. No. 2 To thread the needle, cut off a piece of thread. Loop the thread through the eye of the needle. Tie a knot at the end of the thread. No. 3 Start the first stitch on the backside of the ribbon by entering your needle and thread through a point in the middle of the ribbon. No. 4 Pull the needle through to the frontside of the ribbon. Now, thread on your charm. No. 5 Continue the stitch by entering the needle near to the spot you started the stitch. No. 6 Pull the needle through to the backside of the ribbon. Repeat once or twice to secure the charm. Make sure to stay near the same entry points when doing so. No. 7 To complete the stitch, end on the backside of the ribbon and poke the needle in and out of the ribbon but don’t pull all the way through, keeping the thread on the backside. Now start to pull the thread slowly. The thread will make a loop. Put the needle through the loop and pull tightly to make the knot that will secure the stitch. Trim excess thread. No. 8 Use pliers to clamp ribbon ends to both ends of the ribbon. No. 9 Use two pairs of pliers to pry open the jump ring on the necklace clasp. No. 10 Connect the opened jump ring (with the clasp still connected) to the ribbon end. Close the jump ring with the pliers. No. 11 Do the same to the other side. You got yourself a pretty fancy looking choker! No. 12 Wear or gift.

(Last year, I received a precious pair of tickets to see Morrissey in Las Vegas!) 4. Make your own wrapping paper by painting, stamping or even writing sweet nothings on some craft paper. It is so cute and whomever you are giving to will appreciate the personal touch. 5. Keep your extra Christmas tree trimmings and secure them on top of a gift in lieu of a bow. While anthropology isn’t my practice, I study les parisiens every day. From the effortless parisienne woman to the dapper parisien man, it’s difficult not to become entranced by their way of life. The desire to absorb some of their characteristics or style can become obsessive, as seen in media and films; like Francophile Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Unfortunately, we cannot convert our DNA or cultural upbringing. All we can do is try our best at duplication and with that, here are some subtle ways to infuse your holiday gift giving with parisien flair. It’s the end of 2016 and vintage is still in. Nostalgic French advertisements paired with this year’s beaujolais wine or a vintage jewelry box found at Marché aux Puces (flea market) paired with a stunning broach make perfect presents for an old soul. Try something like a Jazz Age inspired drink tray and a twist on the classic Champagne flute. French entertainment, whether it be film, music or art are iconic. Pick out some French literary classics, like Alain-Fournier’s Le Grand Meaulnes, which is rumored to have inspired F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. While shopping around the Christmas market at La Défense (a disctrict just west of Paris), one could even find jazz artist themed bande dessinée (graphic novels) which are both individually beloved by the French. If you don’t believe me, France has the third largest comic book festival in the world, look into it. For the film-buff friend, a collection of film noir, or a few femme fatale flicks are sure to inspire whoever receives them. I mean come on, who doesn’t love Catherine Deneuve in La Belle du Jour? Parisienne women aren’t always chasing the latest fashions. In fact, what makes the French woman so smart is her love for evergreen pieces like a smoker’s jacket, good denim, the perfect trench, and then mixing them in with statement pieces. AS MENTIONED:
Foulards are one of those classic French articles. In Paris, you can rummage through vintage shops that sell them like candy. It’s the ideal gift for the fashionista in your life. A Parisienne woman can appreciate function, and it’s even better when function meets fashion. L’uniform has some of the cutest convertible book bags and satchels. They are even customizable online, with a color palette reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film. In Paris, it’s not uncommon to grab an espresso at a whimsical corner cafe only to later find yourself at another cafe across the way grabbing more coffee. On days when you don’t have time to sit and enjoy your brew, make it at home with an easy to use French-press. Now for the effortless Parisian beauty tips we all covet, and guess what? They’re simple. Take good care of your skin, hair and nails and that’s all you need. In an interview with British Vogue, Jeanne Damas, founder of Rouje, said that French beauty is about being natural and embracing your imperfections. Since starting my own French self-care regimen, I have found so much more beauty in simplicity. My favorite products make the best gifts, especially in harsh winter climates that can dry the skin and break hair and nails. Kure Bazaar, has a beautiful line of nail care that is eco-friendly and never tested on animals. They even have a line that is up to 85 percent natural and non toxic.

Bioderma has a line of skincare for every type, from dehydrated to oily. Personally, I have very sensitive skin, so I have to be very careful with what I use. I’ve been using their Créaline line for sensitive skin and I’ve honestly never had skin this healthy before. I use their Créaline H20, a micellar water product that takes off makeup and cleans away impurities. And during winter I could not survive without their Créaline Légère moisturizer that is specifically for mixed or normal sensitive skin (they offer it in Créaline Riche for really dry skin too). It is the only moisturizer I’ve ever used that doesn’t break out my skin and it’s magic. You can pick these up at any pharmacie in Paris or buy online if you’re in the US. Finally, whether it’s a Francophile, a real Parisien, or none of the above, you can’t really go wrong with flowers. Joyeux Noël!

Sarah Hubbell has created a truly inspired winter meal complete with Chili Lime Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Couscous and Green Beans with Toasted Hazlenuts. She recommends serving these dishes with a nice steak. "Pick up a good steak rub - Trader Joe’s has a coffee steak rub I love- and cook in a cast iron skillet until a thermometer hits 140 degrees," Hubbell says. "Then, tent with foil before slicing up!" CHILI LIME ROASTED SWEET POTATOES INGREDIENTS 4-5 sweet potatoes, diced into 1-inch cubes 1-2 pasilla peppers, cut into strips 1/2 red onion, sliced (about 1/4inch slices) extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper, to taste juice from one lime
PREPARE 1. Preheat oven to 460 degrees. 2. Toss sweet potatoes, peppers, and onion slices together on a cookie sheet. 3. Coat with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 4. Roast in oven for about 30 minutes, stirring the veggies around once halfway through. When potatoes begin developing charred edges, remove and serve.

COUSCOUS INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 cup couscous 2 cups water 1/2 cup marinated artichoke hearts, roughly chopped 1/4 cup kalamata olives, roughly chopped 1/2 lemon, juiced chopped parsley, to taste
PREPARE 1. Heat oil over medium heat, then toast the couscous over medium heat until it develops a light golden brown color. 2. Add water and bring to a boil, then turn heat down to low and allow to simmer for 10-12 minutes or until water is absorbed. 3. Fold in the artichoke hearts, olives, lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. 4. Top with parsley and serve.

GREEN BEANS AND TOASTED HAZELNUTS INGREDIENTS 2 cups haricot verts (French green beans) extra virgin olive oil 2 shallots, thinly sliced 1/4 cup hazelnuts salt and pepper, to taste
PREPARE 1. Place beans in a pot of water and bring to a boil for 3-4 minutes. 2. Remove from heat and toss beans into an ice bath. Set aside. 3. Heat olive oil over medium high heat in a large cast iron skillet, then add shallots and hazelnuts. 4. Add green beans, season with salt and pepper, and cook until they begin to develop some brown edges. Serve hot!

Pro-tip from one half of the Iconic Cocktail duo, Kaylee Nedley: "Let's talk about using an ice block to chill your batch cocktails. Step one. Don't be afraid of an ice block. These can be picked up at most places that sell ice. If the ice block is too big for your punch bowl, have no fear. What you want to do is score the ice block with a serrated knife. Place the ice block on a clean dish towel. Make a score about half an inch deep. Flip it over and repeat on the other side. Let the ice block sit for about 10-15 minutes. Using the tip of the serrated knife, carefully insert the knife upright. Use something with weight to strike the handle of the knife to get the ice block to crack in half....or gently drop it onto the ground. Whichever is more your style."
