OH HELLO I carefully recrease the poem and tuck it back inside the book. It goes in the “keep” pile, a rare display of mercy in a session of ruthless closet purging. There, sandwiched between my childhood dresser and an old bookcase, I see a piece of paper poking out of a copy of Anne Lamott’s Operating Instructions. Even before wiping away a thick layer of dust, remnants of a couple years spent in the back of our storage closet, I know the contents of the folded sheet of copy paper. My grandfather handed it to me weeks before he died - a poem on motherhood. Not the kind of thing you’d expect from a military man, but he rarely ever spoke of his time in the service, and by the time I came along he had already retired from a career in education and spent much of his time on the arts. Too sleep-deprived to fully appreciate the gesture when he handed it to me days after Hudson’s birth, now I sit down to read the words again. Words I suspect will make more sense the longer I am a mother.

I don’t pause for long. On the heels of a major home renovation, spring cleaning gains new meaning. I carefully recrease the poem and tuck it back inside the book. It goes in the “keep” pile, a rare display of mercy in a session of ruthless closet purging. As I stuff old bridesmaid dresses into a bag bound for Good Will, I think about the kind of man he was. The kind of man I want to raise. And for the first time since his death, I don’t cry when remembering him. Rather, I feel inspired by his memory. I carry out a bulk trash bag feeling a little bit lighter. Whether the change of seasons has you sprucing up your outdoor space (page 50), reconnecting with people you love (serve my lemon garlic pasta on page 26 - you won’t be disappointed!), or just cleaning out an old storage closet, I hope you find the same spring in your step.

Hard-Boiled Eggs 3 WAYS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA NEVELS RECIPES BY SARAH HUBBELL

When the bunny comes to town and leaves a plethora of hard-boiled eggs in his wake, trust us when we say you’ll want these egg-celent recipes on hand. Each one can be prepped and chilled in advance, so keep them bookmarked for easy entertaining.

Pickled Egg Salad Sandwich INGREDIENTS 8 large hard-boiled eggs 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/3 cup white vinegar 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste 1/3 cup finely chopped celery 1/3 cup real mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce 2 green onion finely chopped 4-5 chives, roughly chopped toasted baguette slices

16 EMMA

PREPARE Serves 4-6 Peel eggs and combine with vinegars, sugar, and teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Cover and chill 6 hours or overnight. Remove eggs from vinegar mixture and roughly chop. Combine with celery, mayonnaise, mustard, worcestershire sauce and green onion. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add in a bit of vinegar mixture to taste. Serve on toasted baguette slices topped with fresh chives.

Easy Deviled Eggs INGREDIENTS 1 dozen eggs, hard-boiled and halved 1-2 tablespoons whole grain dijon mustard, to taste 1 tablespoon real mayonnaise 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon cider vinegar 1 teaspoon horseradish a few dashes hot sauce, to taste salt and pepper to taste pinch of paprika 2-3 chives, roughly chopped

PREPARE Remove egg yolks and place in a medium bowl. Set egg whites aside on a serving platter. Mash yolks into a fine crumble. Combine with mustard, mayonnaise, lemon juice, cider vinegar, horseradish, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Sprinkle with paprika and serve topped with chopped chives.

Spring Chop Salad INGREDIENTS for the salad: 1 large bowl mixed greens 1/4 cup roasted and salted sunflower seeds 2 hardboiled eggs 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn 1/2 cup grape tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup cooked cous cous for the dressing: handful of basil leaves 2 cloves garlic 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper to taste

PREPARE Place greens in large salad bowl. Line the remaining ingredients up in rows. To prepare dressing, combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. To serve, toss everything together with dressing.

Knife Skills:

THE BREAD KNIFE Whether a chef by trade or a kitchen newbie, a bread knife is an essential tool. The serrated blade allows for cutting soft bread without crushing it, so put away the chef’s knife around the baguettes, and check out these tips for slicing bread the easy way.

EMMAMAG.COM 23

No. 1 Whereas a chef’s knife works best when its straight edge pushes down through food, a bread knife works most effectively when its serrated blade grinds across the food’s surface working down through it - much like a saw. To avoid smashing your fresh loaf of bread, don’t press down on the knife; rather, drag it across the bread, letting the knife do the heavy lifting. No. 2 When making crostini, turn the baguette on an angle to create slices with more surface area. See the picture on left versus right demonstrating the difference. No. 3 A bread knife may not be as versatile as a chef’s knife, but it is by no means a one trick pony. Use a bread knife to cut through tomatoes, pineapples, and chocolate, as well! No. 4 As always, the quality of your knife is crucial. We recommend this Zwilling J.A. Henckels 8-inch bread knife available from Sur La Table.

Weeknight DINNER

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONSTANCE HIGLEY RECIPE BY SARAH HUBBELL

This lemon garlic pasta is one of my go-to meals when I don’t have a lot of time. It’s packed with flavor and serves a lot of people, which makes it great for entertaining without much notice. If you want a bit of protein, top with strips of grilled chicken breast and enjoy!

EMMAMAG.COM 27

\Lemon Garlic Pasta INGREDIENTS 1 package angel hair pasta 4 tablespoons olive oil pinch of red pepper flakes 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 cup heirloom cherry tomatoes, halved 1 lemon, zested and juiced salt and pepper to taste handful of parsley, roughly chopped

PREPARE Cook pasta according to package instructions. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add red pepper flakes and garlic slices and cook for 2 minutes or until fragrant, stirring frequently. Add tomato halves and stir until they just begin to break down (3-4 minutes). Once pasta has finished cooking, strain and add to the skillet with tomatoes and garlic. Stir until well combined. Add zest and juice from lemon. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve topped with parsley.

DRINK

White Sangria INGREDIENTS 1 bottle dry white wine 4 shots vodka 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup sparkling water apple orange pear fruit of your choice

ENTERTAINING

FAVORITE THINGS PARTY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA JILL

We love any excuse to gather friends together for sweet treats and conversation. This springtime party brought together our favorite gals and their favorite things. Since every party needs a good hashtag, you can get an insider look from our brunch co-hosted by Phoenix Flea founder, Ashlee Molina on Instagram with the hashtag #donutsanddresses. Invite With an invite designed by Floating Specks, we invited guests to bring five of their favorite item for swapping with specific instructions to keep each item under ten dollars. Venue Set in the cozy living room of Rollover Doughnuts, this party could take place in your own living room or nearby coffee shop. Food When celebrating your favorite things, it only makes sense to incorporate your favorite food! Donuts and coffee make for an easy prep-free brunch menu. We also love Italian sodas, so we set up a DIY drink bar. Petite Party Studio helped with colorful straws, individual juice bottles, and lemon yellow honeycomb balls for a bright pop of color on our beverage buffet. Create your own Italian soda bar with ice, sparkling water, and flavoring syrups. Decor The exposed brick and salvaged wood tables need almost no dressing up. Gina from Fiori Floral arranged bright blooms on the DIY drink bar and tables for a colorful and feminine touch. Favorite Things Last but not least, provide a tote or box for guests to take home their new favorite goodies in!

SPRING OUTDOORS The cool spring air begs you to get outdoors. Whether you’re planting a garden, dining outdoors, or playing lawn games, take inspiration from a few of our favorite Pinterest boards.

No. 1 This family turned an unused portion of their yard into an official bocce ball court. The string lights overhead and wood gate set a warm atmosphere, and we love the DIY bocce rule board. No. 2 A bench that doubles as a garden maximizes the use of outdoor space on this patio. The addition of a low round table and colorful seats make it modern. No. 3 The bloggers at Handmade Home have done it again. They put this adorable playhouse together on a thousand-dollar budget, and have the full material list and instructions on their blog. (See link in credits below.) No. 4 A dutch door lends so much charm to any home. Couple the bright yellow with blooming bougainvillea for a spring makeover on a budget. No. 5 This wrought-iron a terra-cotta hanging garden adds a much needed dose of green to this otherwise bland wall. Check out Pinterest for ideas on how to DIY something similar with old pallets. No. 6 We love this outdoor eating nook. The white painted brick gives it an old-world feel broken up by a geometric cinder block “window.” Flanked by weathered wood on bottom and greenery on top makes you want to cozy up and stay a while.

Historic Meets Modern HOME TOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BY GENEVIEVE HANSEN

Tucked in the Coronado Historic District of Phoenix, Arizona, this red brick house packs personal touches and loads of inspiration for the DIY-er. Take a step inside Erika Rappleye’s family home to find out the unusual places she brought in color. Curb Appeal A lemon yellow door and cherry red sitting chairs tie together this simple porch and add interest to a neutral desert landscape. Kitchen Erika’s bright white kitchen is balanced by dark hardwood floors. Bicycle art split into four canvases from Pottery Barn creates a focal wall in the dining nook. A peek from the living room into the kitchen reveals a brick wall Erika’s handy husband exposed along with French doors painted a sunny shade of yellow. Living Area Erika’s favorite space in the house? Her living room gallery wall anchored by her bright green piano. Pick up a jar of Annie Sloan chalk paint to get a similar shade of kelly green!

How to

DUVET COVER ROLL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA NEVELS

If you’ve ever attempted to stuff a duvet inside its cover, you know what a monumental feat it is, especially without a helping hand. This duvet cover roll trick makes this dreadful task a cinch. We promise you’ll never wrestle with a duvet cover again.

58 EMMA

EMMAMAG.COM 59

60 EMMA

No. 1 Begin with your duvet cover inside out on your bed with the duvet lying over the top of it. No. 2 Tie the duvet cover’s corners to the duvet itself. No. 3 If your duvet cover is missing those handy ties, you can use safety pins on each corner instead. No. 4 Beginning at the foot of the bed, roll the duvet cover and duvet together like a burrito all the way to the headboard. No. 5 Flip the cover around the duvet burrito. This step is the trickiest, but just imagine those sandwich baggies where one side folds over the top. The technique is the same here. Pictured, we completed this on the right side. Repeat on the opposite side. No. 6 Once both sides of the cover have been flipped around the rolled duvet, you can simply unroll the burrito back down toward the foot of the bed.

DIY FELT FOOD

A play kitchen filled with pots, pans, and loads of pretend food will keep a little imagination occupied for an entire afternoon. We had trouble tracking down eggs and bacon at children’s retailers and figured we could tackle this culinary craft on our own. Happy we did, because this quick DIY cost just a buck in materials!

Materials brown felt tan felt yellow felt white felt scissors sewing machine or needle and thread No. 1 Trace the shapes pictured on left onto sheets of felt. Go ahead and freehand it - no need for perfection! No. 2 With a sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew the tan pieces onto the brown bacon strips. No. 3 Finish your felt breakfast by sewing the yellow yolks onto the white cut-outs.
