The Spring FOCUS

I

t’s here. Spring has sprung and so has the May issue of Chuchoter. We’re so excited to bring you the latest beauty trends and styles to help you achieve the best spring looks of the year. Introducing Jade and Sophie, the newest faces of UK modelling. Myself and Kaiya speak to the girls on what life in the fast lane is all about. They tell us how their dreams came true but it’s not all it’s made out to be. Being a real woman in the industry is quite the rollercoaster. I must admit, I’m winters biggest fan. I love the winter beauty crazes, a berry lip and a smoky eye with a pop of glitter. It truly brings the best out of anyone on the darkest of days (literally). I’m all about layering up, the cosy nights in and all the festivities that seem to flash before your eyes year after year, but it’s spring that gives us ‘out with the old and in with the new.’ It’s the lighter and brighter days that radiate energy through our souls, whether you’re in a 9-5 job or a stay at home mum, there’s bound to be an extra spring in your step. We all have the hope day after day for an entire week of pure sunshine. So to keep skin clear in the fresh air, we bring to you a ‘no make-up’ make-up look (page 27). There’s something about walking past patches of grass or seeing your grandparents garden surrounded with heads of flowers as they pop out from their soggy bulbs. Sweeping the dead and dreary brown leaves is a rather satisfying feeling. I bet today you saw a blossom tree bloom for the first time in 2017. Waking up to the birds tweeting away is just marvelous, the first thing you hear as you wake up is the sound of

Above: Editor - Molly Court thriving life and nature. I often gaze in bed before peeling myself away, wishing I could translate their chirps, even if they’re squabbling over a twig for a nest. Let’s not forget the fundamental moment when you realise it’s time to put the duster coat away and bring out the famous denim jacket. A favourite time of mine is opening a window and feeling the crisp fresh air as the musky winter atmosphere drifts. Being able to walk through your cherished park and wanting to sit for hours on a bench that’s 100 years older than you, picturing the picnic you’ve planned for next weekend. In this issue, we give you everything to prepare you for all things spring. We show you the must have collection of lipstick shades and the best long

lasting eyeliners to use for those slow sunny days. We tell you the top-secret scents of the season, not forgetting a step by step guide to accomplishing a fresh cleansing routine. We must make that skin glow (page 31). Spring is season of birth, the time of year when fluffy lambs and delicate calves take their first steps on planet earth. You can find out about the newest cruelty free products available (page 8-9). If you’re looking for a place to escape to for that long awaited me time, to truly treat yourself and recharge yourself for spring, I have the top spots around the country for the ultimate spa break all in one place. There we have it, spring in a beauuty bundle and it’s waiting for you.

STUNNING BE SELECTIVE ABOUT YOUR BEAUTY BRANDS, KARMA MIGHT JUST Words and photography by Kaiya Fitzgerald

W

hen it comes to our appearance, I don't think any of us are ever truly happy. I know I’m not. I’m always thinking up the next way to improve what I see in the mirror (which is a struggle because I really love duvet days and Krispy Kremes, but that’s a different story.) But would we ever let our sister, best friend, or mum suffer for us to look a better version of ourselves? Would we want to put them through pain simply for us to have a clear complexion, or effortless make up looks that are to die for? I know I wouldn’t. Did you answer no to that question? Obviously. Any sane human would. Next question: Do you buy MAC, Bobbi Brown, Avon or L’oreal products, just to name a few? If the answer to this question is yes then the answer to the former should’ve been yes too. Hold that thought. I answered no to the first question. And I answered no to the second question too. But my answers were correct. I shop for my beauty must-haves at Urban Decay, Lush and Nyx, mainly. And what

is the biggest difference between my brand choices and those of you who answered yes to all the others? I can sleep at night knowing I get to waltz around covered in glitter and have kick-ass, on fleek eyeliner and volumising mascara without having the guilt of thousands of animals suffering for it. Back to that thought I told you to hold. See what I’m getting at here? If you’re willing to let innocent animals suffer and die for your own vanity, then surely you’d let your own loved ones do the same? I know its a harsh way to look at it but, it’s needed. Because the statistics regarding animal testing in the world of beauty are scary. And I mean, properly scary, not Paranormal Activity scary (lets face it, it wasn’t. At all.) For starters, the full list of big, bad brands using animals to determine whether their products are appropriate for human use is twice the size of the list of cruelty-free brands. In this and age, with all the animal rights groups active around the world, thats a shocking fact in itself. And that is the most tame thing I discovered when doing my research for this eye-opener piece. How many of you out there have a

beloved rabbit, dog or cat as a family pet? I have dogs, my best friend has a few cats, she’s had a rabbit in the past. A lot of the people around me have or have had one of these animals. I can imagine a lot of the people around you have too, if not you yourself. What if I said to you all those animals are lucky to have families because they could've ended up in a lab being experimented on? These animals, including mice, are the most common to be used in animal testing. But they're not the only ones. It seems scientists don't discriminate when it comes to their test subjects. In 2011, countries in the EU reported they used the following amount of animals in their testing: - 17,896 dogs - 3,713 cats - 358,213 rabbits - 6,686 horses - 6,095 monkeys - 675,065 birds - 77,280 pigs - 30,914 cattle - over 1,000,000 fish - and over 8,500,000 rodents. Shocked, yet? It gets worse. It has been estimated that up to 90% of

MAY 2017

CHUCHOTER

animals used in testing are not counted in official statistics. That means that those numbers make up around 10% of the animals actually used. Take a moment to let that sink in. Add those numbers up. That makes 10,675,862 (which is such a huge number that I’m not even sure how to go about saying it out loud) animals in the EU, in one year alone. That doesn’t account for the entire world. It doesn’t account for the, supposed by official statistics, 100 million plus animals used in US labs. It doesn’t account for all the years that’ve gone by since the day humans started the sadistic practice of using animals to line their pockets, in more ways than one. Most of the animals used in testing are protected by the Animal Welfare act. But that doesn’t matter to those good old scientists who are helping us look prettier. And even if there are viable alternatives to these beautiful animals, they aren’t used, because the law doesn’t require it. How screwed up is that? The alternatives are not necessary even if they’re available. Not necessary, by law. Yes, I am aware that not all animal testing is for us humans to look a little less tired, or a little less spotty, or a little less plain. 46% of all testing is required for fundamental biological research. Cool, health improvements. But only 19% is for human and veterinary medication. And 92% of experimental drugs fail the human testing stages because they’re either too dangerous or ineffective. We’re burning, poisoning and killing innocent living things for beauty and drugs that don’t work or we’ll never have. I’m sorry, but we’re not going to cure cancer, or look like Michelle Keegan by subjecting 10,675,862 animals a year to a life of hellish pain and suffering. So really, it’s pointless. They’re dying for nothing. They’re suffering for nothing. And we’re reaping the profits. As always. The UK is the third top user of animals in experiments in the world, with France and Germany taking to the sickening podium, in that order. That little gem of a fact makes me want to move to Mars. I was crushed to find out that the UK had made the cut for runner-up in the “Worst place for animals to be born” competition. Some of the tests scientists are doing on these poor creatures include murder on the fetus’.

I don’t even have words for that piece of information, and I usually have an answer for everything (I’m a Yorkshire lass, what can I say.) First place for most common test used by the people behind all your MAC, Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown beauty products goes to the skin and eye irritation test. What does this involve? Chemicals are dripped into an animals eyes or onto shaved skin, without pain relief. To see if it’ll upset a poor human’s eyes or skin. Because we’re obviously the most important species and our needs should definitely come first. Sure thing. Now, I’m not saying there hasn’t been progress in the protection of animals in this cruel, scientific world. Alternative tests are suggested, using the three ‘R’s’; replace animal testing where possible, reduce the number of animals used in testing, refine testing procedures to alleviate or at least reduce pain for the animal involved. And the animal kingdom is supposed to be eternally grateful for those measly suggestions, that aren’t even put into practice? Yeah, okay. I’m sure they see it our way. All you have to do is type “animal testing” into Google to prove every single fact I’ve thrown your way. These statistics are easily accessible for the wider public. So why aren’t we accessing them? Is it a case of, out of sight, out of mind? I’ve said already, we wouldn’t subject our friends and family to these horrific procedures in the name of vanity, so why are we doing it to innocent and harmless animals that have not wronged us in any way? We’d be locked away in prison and branded all sorts of horrific things if we did the same to our children. Think about it that way for a second, then see how okay you are about going to MAC and spending hundreds on new eye shadow palettes and blushers and foundations. The only positive thing I found on this little internet search came from the website DoSomething.org and their Kidnap Cosmetics campaign. All you have to do is sign up, and they offer all sorts of information from facts on animal testing to tips on how to talk to friends about the products they’re using. The idea is that you should hit your bestie’s make up bag and bathroom and kidnap any of the products made by brands that use animals in their elimination process. I think that it’s a great way to raise

9

Chuchoterlifestyle awareness. I would definitely pay a visit to all my friends’ dressing tables if I thought they were using products created by the scum of the earth. But, thankfully, they’re not. We’re Urban Decay girls (and Nyx girls when the pay cheques and bills don’t allow for big make up hauls) through and through and nothing could change that. So, let’s go back to my second question; Do you buy MAC, Bobbi Brown, Avon or L’oreal products, just to name a few? This time, I hope the answer is no. No matter how good the make up and cosmetics are. Please, have morals and beauty, not just beauty.

he’s young, she’s bold, she’s Sophie Gannon and the world is waiting for her. As I take my first steps into Sophie’s Manchester home, I can hear her laugh echoing round the newly built modern home. I’d been told about her bubbly ways so I was so thrilled to be one of the first to get to know this fresh face. “I was reading through my high school leavers book the other day when I went back to my mum’s and all the teachers had made comments telling me to never lose my positivity.” She tells me, as I ask her what she’s been up to lately. “I know I’m a grounded person but I went back home last week to take a step back from things and have some mum cuddles. I also went to see several musicals here in Manchester because I’ve really missed that atmosphere. I spent hours in my room and found all sorts of stuff clogged up in the bottom of my wardrobe.” After spending the past year jet setting across the world, walking down every runway you’ve dreamed of and shooting ad campaign after ad campaign, this wise soul clearly needed some home comforts. “I’d say it’s only been the past year that I’ve really been put out

there but it’s honestly a truly magnificent experience, I have constant moments where I just zone out and think how is this my life, I’m just a no-one from nowhere.” Her fame career began when Sophie went on a school trip with college to a performing arts academy in London. Spending several days doing dance and acting workshops, it was her beaming personality and her natural photogenic looks which lead to her being scouted there and then. Sophie finished college and achieved three A Levels at A*AB before moving to London and joining Elite modelling agency. “Growing up, I was always in school theatre performances and taking singing lessons. Performing is something that feels so natural to me and now my job has become my hobby. I can’t tell you how good it feels to say that out loud.” Although you might not have seen Sophie’s iconic smile just yet, other parts of the world have been and absolutely cherishing it. “I’ve spent a lot of this past year in America, I feel as though the across the pond has more room for up and coming models and there’s so much more opportunity. In the UK, I find it tough because there’s not a lot of diversity. You have to be a certain type.” Sophie may only be 19 and yet to experience the big bad world but her outlook on life is refreshing. She told me that growing up she was always excited for life and

“I’m just a no-one from nowhere.”

14 obviously, she still is now. It’s her mum who was her motivation and her biggest supporter. “My mum’s definitely a strong independent woman and I really try to embrace that in this industry. She taught me how to carry myself in the strongest way possible.” At the pure age of 19, Sophie sees herself as vulnerable and has raised issues over whether manipulation is a worry in the modelling industry to young women. “It’s easy to lose sight of who you really are and what you stand for. In such a competitive industry, it’s sort of a women versus woman world and you feel as though you must do whatever you must, so you can stride to the top. In reality it’s all an experience and a journey in life that I’ll be forever thankful for.” Sophie used her social media to speak out about this issue in January and raised awareness to young girls, implying that it’s okay to be true to yourself. Everyone has dreams they want to come true but it’s how you make them come true which is what really counts. Sophie’s smile is one of a kind and I can certainly feel it radiating through my soul. As she hands me a fresh forest berry smoothie (obviously, her own recipe), I ask her what the real positives are about the job. “For me, I’ve always wanted to travel and this career allows me to see all sorts of wonders of the world. I’m always surrounded by the most creative people on the planet and I think that is an honour. I also love how educated I’ve become with all the cultures in the world. I’m an open minded person so it’s great to be able to be learning all the time. I’m just so in love with my job, even at the harder times.”

his month, Chuchoter is all about the women of the world making a difference. And I’ve found a woman doing just that. And she rocks. Aspiring make-up artist and amateur model Jade Garvin is breaking down the beauty barriers society has instilled on the men and women of the world. She’s kicking ass in the makeup arena, spreading colour and glitter amongst those shy people of the world that are too self-conscious to be a little louder in their lives. The women who think they’re too old, the men who don’t think they’ll be accepted. And she’s spreading the word in the model world that you don’t have to be a certain size to be beautiful. Being a “plus-size” gal myself, I’m championing everything she’s doing there. It’s only small so far, but when it grows, it’ll be ground-breaking. Hopefully, it’ll help the younger generations realise they don’t have to look a certain way to get to a certain place in life. Success and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as it where. This 20 year-old, originally from Cambridgeshire, is an inspiration to everyone, even just from her passion about changing other people’s frame of mind. I spent the day with her and we had a blast. We had throwback tunes on (mainly Jennifer Lopez, I wont lie to you), we gabbed about make-up (obviously), didn’t have a salad for lunch, drank Starbucks and gossiped about boys like the

cliché girls we are. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun. It wasn’t all frills and giggles though, we had serious, deep chats about what got her to this place and where she wants to go from here. Let’s start with the make-up. Where did that love come from? “You show me a girl who doesn’t love a bit of make-up every now and then. But it was something more for me. Remember Burlesque, in that epic scene where Cher’s character was telling the story about her Mum and her friends lining up all their products and mirrors? That was my childhood but, I lined up all my dolls, alongside all my Mum’s products, and made them look fabulous. Or so I thought at that age. “I’d get in so much trouble for that. I didn’t realise how expensive was when I was younger. Now I have my own income and have to get all my own stuff, I’d probably time travel and send myself to the naughty step permanently.” When did you realise it was something you wanted to do professionally? “That was more by accident than anything else. I’d spend every night after coursework or homework perfecting my techniques. So when it came to getting ready for parties with friends, everyone would be wanting me to do their winged eyeliner, or eye shadow, or get their eyebrows even. “It wasn’t until I helped one of my closest friends with a new make-up routine that I realised why I loved it so much. She wasn’t really one for big, extravagant make-up, so I just coerced her out of her comfort zone. And she loved it. She cried and cried and said over and over how beautiful

20 I’d made her and how grateful she was. It was crazy. I couldn’t believe I’d made that much difference to one person with a 20 minute make-up look for during the day, and something a little flashier for the evening. “It made me want to carry on helping people that way. Bringing their self-worth and confidence up to where they should be.” So, how does the modelling tie in to all this? “Well, quietly, I’ve always struggled with body image. I’ve never felt comfortable about the way I look from the neck down. I’ve never been what society would say is skinny. And, if I’m honest, I’ve grown to realise I don’t want to be. Fitting the mould really isn’t my style. “Yeah, I got bullied for my size, but I didn’t let that change me as a person. I’m as healthy as I can be, don’t get me wrong I still enjoy a Domino’s splurge every now and then, but I do my best. And that’s all I want out of life. “The modelling world is cruel. I get judged a lot and I’m not even out there and successful yet. I mean, I could probably fit three of these tiny, traditional models into my jeans but, I laugh it off. Because, I think I look good a lot of the time, and when I don’t, my boyfriend thinks I’m a knock-out. Move on, sort of thing. The day I look in the mirror and am completely disgusted by what I see, I’ll make some serious changes, but at the moment I’m happy as I am. And I’m trying to get that mentality to all the people out there thinking they’re ugly just because they’re not a size 0.” What’s your aim getting into the modelling industry exactly? “I just want to normalise a curvier frame. I want it to be a

MAY 2017 public thing instead of a hidden away horror story. I don’t want younger women, sat in their rooms, looking down at their big hips or tummy and being disgusted, thinking no one will ever find them attractive. Not seeing themselves as attractive. “I want to get out there and say to them ‘You’re still hot, regardless of the number on the tag in your clothes’ and I want them to say it to their friends and family, and to themselves in the mirror every day. I want to spread it to everyone everywhere, so that no one ever feels bad about the way they look again. Because no one deserves that sort of pain.” I want to thank Jade Garvin and all the people out there fighting for all the people who don’t fit the mould. They’re doing more good than they could ever possibly realise. I pray one day the world will do away with photoshop and fad diets and just be themselves. Because that’s true beauty.

Taboo tattoos and trash-talking TYRANTS

THE ‘KISS OF DEATH’ INKED UNDER YOUR SKIN FOR ETERNITY? OR AN EXPRESSIVE PIECE OF ART? Words and photography by Kaiya Fitzgerald

J

udging people these days is as common as seeing a pigeon in the streets. Sadly. And this doesn't seem to be letting up at all. Humans are just a judgy race. “I’m not judgy at all” I hear you say. Really? Because I disagree. Even subconsciously, we all do it. I’m not claiming to be perfect. I’ve done it. I feel myself doing it, and hate myself for it, but I can’t seem to stop. I’d be here all year if I listed all the things men and women are judged for in the 21st century, so, I’m sticking to one thing that seems completely ridiculous and outdated to me. Picture this: Two girls are sat alone at opposite ends of a bar, only a seat free beside both of them. One has breast implants and lip fillers, the other is covered in visible tattoos. Which one are you most likely to go and sit beside? It’s probably not going to be the tattooed individual. Both are forms of body modification, but one is tied to a larger and more fierce stigma than the other. According to a study by Pew Research Centre, nearly 40% of 18-29 year olds have at least one tattoo. 1 in 5 people in the UK have tattoos. That is a lot of our population when you sit down and really think about it. If you have a group of

close friends, which for arguments sake is around seven people strong (which, well done, because I can’t keep up with my four), then at least one or more of you have tattoos. Unless you’re one of these devout religious types that believe tattoos are a sin and avoid them like the plague. Ha. I understand where the stigma towards tattoos has come from. They are deeply routed in gang activity, prison stints and all round general violence. But do we really need to boycott all art just because it’s been used by the bad people of the world? Should we avoid paintings simply because it was a favourite pastime of Charles Bronson? (Bad guy. Believe me. Very violent. Has definitely sinned in his lifetime.) Are we all going to stop loving Ed Sheeran so much (SO. MUCH.) simply because he has a lot of tattoos? If you met Ed in the street would you walk the other way because of his sleeve? No. You obviously wouldn’t. You’d be crazy. So why are we doing it to our neighbours and colleagues? Just because tattoos are not traditional and accepted forms of art does not make them any less awe-inspiring and elegant. They are a personal, individual choice made by someone for their value or meaning. Or maybe just because

they’re pretty. Not every rose has to have some deep and damaging meaning to be a beautiful piece of art. The worse part of all this? The attitude in the world of work. I realise the prejudice towards tattoos in the workplace is waning, slowly. But that is not enough. A highly qualified individual, possibly more qualified than the five other people interviewing for a job, would not be hired to the admission of many managers, simply because of their visible tattoos. Some are hired, but pressured to cover their personal choices, hide their true selves, if you will. Tattoos are viewed as unprofessional. Even today. I mean, sleeping with your boss in profoundly unprofessional but when was the last time you heard employers complain about that? That actually won Bridget Jones her first break in her career as a journalist, if I remember correctly. (I’m not going to head off on a feminist tangent, promise, but… it’s right there for the taking, alongside hiring women with fake boobs.) Employers see visible tattoos as ‘the kiss of death’ in an interview. And that’s pretty cruel. The grim reaper of jobs isn’t lurking behind a man just because you can see the start of what is probably a pretty epic tribal sleeve. So why are we acting like it? Is hiring that guy going to

MAY 2017

bring about the apocalypsese we were promised in 2012? Again, ha. (I have to laugh or I’ll scream. And that is not pretty, I promise you.) The stereotypical tattooed person doesn’t appear to exist any more. It is no longer just long haired men who ride motorcycles and listen to rock music that ink their canvas. It’s mums, dads, grandmas and grandads. Bakers, bankersand teachers. It’s your hairdresser, your plumber, the guy knocking on your door from Marie Curie wanting your support. But the tattooed population in your country still feel like victims of heavy prejudice according to a behavioural study by The Social Science Journal. And this baffles me. Some tattoo artists have taken to warning customers about their chosen place for their personal piece of art. That it might make life difficult for them. They feel the need to WARN them. And this baffles me even more. These tattoo artists, who are very talented in their own right (all you need to do is look around you to know I’m right, *cough* Tattoo Fixers *cough*), seem to be handing their customers a death sentence. It shouldn’t be this taboo in this day and age to have body art, when its so old hat to have other forms of body modifications. All in the name of confidence. The honest and hardworking people in the tattooed community (I relent not all are perfect, but neither are some in the ‘clean’ community, as they are referred to) are carrying art on their body, not a gun in their waste band. Can we ever stop treating them like something we scraped off of the bottom of our shoes? I hope so. But someone somewhere will always be judging, subconsciously or otherwise. Don't let it be you. Be right back, I’m just going to plan my next tattoo. Maybe a meaningless rose. Who knows.

THE NOMake-Up TREND MOLLY COURT SHOWS YOU HOW TO ACHIEVE THE ‘NO MAKE-UP’ LOOK IN MINUTES

Words by Molly

Court

I

n recent months, celebrities have taken to the trend of the bare faced make-up look. My guide to showing you how to have a radiant face this spring takes three simple steps. With minimal make-up, it creates the most natural look to apply on the commute to work or whether it’s one those lazy days when you want something simple yet effective. We all know there’s no better feeling than having a pure face. This look does just that whilst giving you the confidence to glow.

Cleanse Wash your face using a mild soap. To stop the redness creeping out of your skin, gently massage with your hands and rinse with warm water. Use No7 Beautiful Skin Foaming Cleanser, £9.50, to refresh your skin.

Moisturiser A moisturiser is what you need to make sure your skin is soft and smooth for make-up application. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Protectant Night Time Miracle Moisturiser, £32, won’t leave your skin greasy but will last all day.

Foundation For those who want a light coverage, a tinted moisturiser is calling your name. I recommend Clarins Tinted Moisturiser, £30. It includes SPF15 and gives hydration as well as luminosity to your skin. This product is ideal for all skin types.

Those who are wanting slightly more coverage should apply foundation but only to the blemished areas. Urban Decay Naked Skin, £28.50, will convert your complexions. Either way, remember to blend, blend, blend.

Concealer The concealer you need this season is YSL Touche Éclat, £25.50. It instantly lightens and brightens skin to leave a luminous finish. Apply this product to dark areas of the skin, using fingertip sized blobs. To get the natural and healthy gleam, pat with a finger to blend. You want to keep that shine under control but obviously in secret. Dust Clinique Blended Face Powder & Brush, £23.50, in shade Invisible Blend over the areas you want to have a natural matte finish.

Blush To keep this look bare, using a blush that is soft in colour and is close to your natural blushing shade. A cream blush is easier to blend, so to highlight your natural pigment use Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher, £8.

Mascara It’s all about keeping it simple, so just to define your eyes I give to you Soap & Glory Thick & Fast Flash Extensions Effect Mascara, £10.50. Apply two coats to each eye using the thick combed wand to create volume and intensity.

KAIYA FITZGERALD SHOWS YOU THE BEST LONG LASTING LIPSTICKS THIS SEASON Words by Kaiya Fitzgerald

h, the minefield that is lipsticks. There’s so many shades and finishes that it can sometimes feel like you’re stumbling around in the dark, with your eyes closed, and two blindfolds on. Finding a shade that suits you is difficult, and when you do, it doesn’t always last the way you want it to. There’s nothing worse than having to reapply a dozen times a day. My personal choice? Urban Decay all the way. With UD by my side, I’m the girl on nights out that doesn’t have to look in the mirror every five seconds to see if her lipstick survived that last shot. Because it does. Every. Time. To help you out, I’ve selected a few of this season’s most popular shades from the top three brands you can trust not to quit on you half way through the day or night.

If it’s affordability you’re looking for, Nyx is one of the best brands for you. Their products are great quality for high street prices, perfect for those days you fancy a new lippy but can’t afford a splurge. Nyx’s Liquid Suede Cream lipsticks are great if you want an eye-catching shine and some beautifully colourful shades. Brooklyn Thorn Subversive Socialite Club Hopper £7 For those of you out there who prefer a matte finish to a high shine, then Nyx’s Velvet Matte lipsticks are the ones for you, and they won’t break the bank either, which is definitely a bonus! Charmed Effervescent Duchess £7 Urban Decay’s lipstick may be double the price of Nyx’s, but hot damn are they fabulous, and I’m not just saying that because they are my go-to favourite brand. I’ve found they’re the most reliable lipsticks I have in my make-up bag and I rep them all the way. This time, I’ve only picked out matte shades, because they are a huge trend at the moment (a trend I absolutely love!) Comfort Matte Vice: 1993 Backtalk £15 Mega Matte Vice:

“You can’t keep changing men , so settle for changing your lipstick” - Heather Locklear

Oblivion Hex £15 Last but not least, if you’re flush enough to have an ultimate splurge in the name of beauty, Kat Von D’s new Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks are the stuff of Gods. They are a little bit pricier, but totally worth it. Just treat yo’self girl! Lolita Noble Requiem £20 And for the ultimate bargain, grab ‘The Bow n Arrow Look’ set, which includes a travel-sized “Bow n Arrow” Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and an ink eyeliner in the shade “Trooper” for only £20! This set is perfect for a quick and easy day look that you can take with you anywhere without taking up your entire handbag.

MOLLY COURT GIVES YOU A STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL TO MAKE YOUR SKIN GLOW THIS SPRING

Words by Molly

W

ave goodbye to dull skin and hello to bolder and brigther skin. With the arrival of spring, it’s time to unclog those pores and banish the blemishes. This four-step guide will keep your skin fresh whatever the weather this season may bring. If it’s dry skin, dehydrated or greasy, these hot off the press products are bound to cater for your needs. Without a doubt, you know that radiant skin makes you feel like the true beautiful and confident self you really are. This routine can be applied morning or night, so you can dazzle in the day or beam in the evening sun. It’s time to show the world what your skin’s made of.

1. Firstly, I’m going to break the biggest rule of all things beauty. I’m going

to introduce you to face wipes. It’s all about The Skin System Tea Tree Skincare Facial Cleansing Wipes, 75p. The lightly fragranced wipes are perfect to kick start your skin cleanse. They may not be recommended but women have used them generations and I vote yes. With tea tree and witch hazel to tighten pores and prevent breakouts, they cleanse and refresh your skin whilst removing the initial layer of make-up. They don’t leave your skin feel stripped and weak. To use, gently wipe across all areas on your face and neck.

2. It’s time to scrub. Being totally honest, in all my life (this far) I’ve used

THE TIP

SKINCARE OVERLOAD Use skincare products that remove excess sebum without letting them dehydrate your skin. Find products that have anti-bacterial formula and ingredients such as anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory action.

three different brands of exfoliators. Scrubs are a big deal to me and when I find one that works, it never leaves. Neutrogena Visibly Clear® Pink Grapefruit Daily Scrub, £4.79 includes micro-beads which is a formula deeply clean skin and unclog pores. It also helps to treat spots without over drying your skin. The pink grapefruit scents give a refreshing feel to your face. To use, massage on to a wet look warm face and then rinse.

3. Cleansing is the most satisfying stage for me, using Tea Tree Skin Clearing

Mattifying Toner, £6. This lotion is long lasting on the skin and contains anti-bacterial tea tree oil. This thoroughly washes the dirt, oil and make up from you face without your

skin feeling dry. It’s known for releasing and shrinking pores. To use, soak onto a cotton pad and smooth over your face.

4. The ultimate moisturiser to use this spring is the Clinique Moisture

Surge™ Extended Thirst Relief, £34. As this is a higher end brand, there’s a surge in price but it’s more than worth it. It’s recommended for all skin types. This product is light and feels smooth, keep ing skin hydrated for an entire day. It reduces wrinkles and fine lines on the face, giving a vibrant and healthy glow in return from one use. To use, massage into face until there’s no excess product.
