Este escritor y guionista del viejo Hollywood se hizo famoso gracias a sus historias, pero su propia vida acabó siendo la más fascinante de todas. Una montaña rusa repleta de éxitos y de fracasos, de guerras y de viajes, de amores célebres y de amistades peligrosas. Peter Viertel falleció a finales de 2007. En una entrevista inédita realizada dos años antes, dejó claro cuáles eran sus dos grandes pasiones: el cine y el surf. Hoy, sus respuestas son las piezas de un puzzle de proporciones épicas. Pero a principios de este siglo, el fotógrafo francés Jean François Rauzier decidió avanzar algo más en esta técnica. La peculiaridad de las imágenes de Rauzier es que la intención del fotógrafo no se limita a crear una gran imagen. Rauzier, además, quiere mantener la importancia de algunas de las imágenes que la conforman y conferirles un protagonismo compartido. Él vive de lo que saca haciendo arreglillos en unos apartamentos de Fuengirola, pero sobre todo, y desde hace siete años, tiene cuatro burrotaxis que le tienen más que aburrido. Su vida es un ir y venir por calles blancas con el cerebro más plano que el de los propios borricos, a los que, quizás por eso, parece entender tan bien. Ella, que ya ni habla de boda, vende souvenirs, pero es una soñadora, una aventurera, una princesa atrapada en un laberinto con paredes de cal. En estos días hay como un revuelo. Un concejal ha dicho que han hermanado Mijas con Bat Yam, una especie de barrio aledaño de Tel Aviv. Nadie sabe muy bien lo que eso supondrá y nadie se pone de acuerdo en cómo se deletrea Tel Aviv, pero todos hacen el mismo chiste. Cuando Doslow y su equipo pusieron en la calle la primera máquina de vending a pedales empezaron a ser conscientes del tremendo poder que estaban adquiriendo para cambiar el curso de la ‘pequeña’ historia de algunos habitantes de Nevada. El concepto era adaptar una bicicleta estática a una máquina de vending para que el usuario, si quería un producto, tuviera que pedalear los kilómetros necesarios para quemar las calorías que iba a ingerir de dicho producto. Inicialmente los habitantes de Bakersfield optaron por desestimar la nueva máquina de vending instalada en la gasolinera y usaron la de siempre. Dr. Franciscus Doslow was in charge of the main testing facility for products invented in a secret lab under the Nevada desert (USA). In order to carry out trials on humans, Dr. Doslow used the residents of the towns close to Area 51 in Nevada as unsuspecting guinea pigs. onstruosa, Zamarrica, Sousón, Bastardo, Dona Branca... una lista de nombres como estos, a primera vista, podría parecer un conjunto de insultos lanzados con más o menos finura. Pero no, no son agravios, son nombres de uvas que crecen en una pequeña comarca gallega llamada Monterrei (sí, con “i” latina) y cuya tradición se remonta a siglos, a milenios atrás. Gracias al esfuerzo e investigación de unos pocos viticultores por cuya sangre corren a partes iguales glóbulos heroicos e intrépidos, estas uvas con nombres rarísimos se están convirtiendo en unos vinos distintos, originales, que al beberse trasladan, como deberían hacer todos, a la tierra donde nacieron. Que sí, que algo de Historia viene bien Siglo I a.C. Asentamientos romanos en Gallaecia explotan yacimientos mineros de hierro, estaño y wolframio. La comarca que hoy es Monterrei está repleta de calzadas romanas y vías que comunican Braccara Augusta con Asturica Augusta (hoy las ciudades de Braga en Portugal y Astorga en León). Excavan lagares en piedra y cultivan vides para abastecerse de vino. De vino. ¿De qué uvas? Pues de Sousón, Albarello, Bastardo o Merenzao... Comienza aquí la historia de las uvas ancestrales de Galicia. Alta Edad Media. Monterrei es un foco de atracción de la cultura gracias a los monjes franciscanos y dominicos. En este condado se instala la primera imprenta de Galicia y el vino que allí se elabora (también por los monjes, cuyos monasterios de Celanova y Montederramo fueron decisivos) extiende su fama gracias a las misiones en América, donde son los religiosos quienes inician la vitivinicultura en las regiones de Baja California y Monterrey (esta vez sí, con “y” griega). Tras la Guerra Civil Española, en la que esta comarca tuvo su mayor superficie plantada al alcanzar las 3.800 hectáreas, vino el declive y el abandono de las tierras. Eso provocó que casi desapareciera el viñedo en la zona… hasta que Monterrei reclamó su identidad creando un consejo regulador vitivinícola para regular la elaboración de vinos. Poco antes de que naciera este organismo, el joven José Luis Mateo está estudiando lejos de su tierra, en Madrid, y echa de menos su valle y sus montañas. La ciudad es grande y no se siente cómodo, mientras en su cabeza bulle una idea: hacer un vino de su tierra, Monterrei, que refleje esa historia de la comarca. Un gran vino que implique riesgo, sí, pero también un conocimiento profundo de la materia prima, el alma de los vinos, que son las uvas y la tierra. Es entonces cuando empiezan a tejerse las telas de Quinta da Muradella, una pequeña bodega cuyo objetivo es perdurar en el tiempo con sus vinos. Cuestión de fe... y de intuición Mateo vuelve a Galicia y comienza a plantar esas uvas con nombres raros, algunas de las cuales no se contemplan en el reglamento del Consejo Regulador. Pero él tiene fe en ellas porque ha ido encontrando viejos viñedos y haciendo vinos de pequeñas parcelas (la mayoría de ellas poco más grandes que un campo de fútbol) que le han provocado “buenas sensacio-

José Luis Mateo has been working for the last twenty years to recover the essence of Monterrei winemaking, with varieties that were grown at the very dawn of our era. He talks lovingly about his vineyards and, through conviction rather than to sell more bottles, produces organically - a fact that doesn’t appear on the labels. Monstruosa, Zamarrica, Sousón, Bastardo, Dona Branca… a list of names like these seem, at first, like a set of insults in a foreign language. But no, they’re not swear words. They are the names of different grapes, which grow in a small region of Galicia called Monterrei (yes, with an ‘i’), and whose tradition goes back centuries, millennia even. Thanks to the effort and research of a small number of winemakers, heroic and intrepid characters if ever there were, these grapes with the strangest of names are being turned into wines. Distinct and original wines which, when tasted, transport you to the land that gave them life. A bit of history will come in handy. I promise! First century AD. Roman settlements in Gallaecia exploit mineral deposits of iron, tin and wolfram. The area that is now Monterrei is full of Roman pathways and roads linking Braccara Augusta with Asturica Augusta (the modern-day cities of Braga in Portugal and Astorga in León). They carve out stone winepresses and grow vines to keep themselves supplied with wine. Wine. From which grapes? Well, from Sousón, Albarello, Bastardo or Merenzao. And that’s where the story of Galicia’s ancient grapes starts. High Middle Ages. Monterrei is a cultural hotspot thanks to Franciscan and Dominican monks. The first printing press in Galicia was set up in this county, and the wine produced there (also by the monks, whose monasteries in Celanova and Montederramo were decisive) much later extended its fame thanks to missionaries in Latin America; there, it was the religious communities that first started winemaking in Baja California and Monterrey (this time with a ‘y’). After the Spanish Civil War, during which time the planted surface area in the county reached its peak at some 3,800 hectares, the land fell into abandonment and decline. As a result, the vineyards almost disappeared from the area…until Monterrei reclaimed its identity, creating a regulatory council for winemaking to oversee production in the area. Just before this body was set up, the young José Luis Mateo was studying in Madrid, far from his region and homesick for its valley and mountains. The city is big and he didn’t feel comfortable. Meanwhile, an idea stirred in his mind: to make a wine from his area – Monterrei – that would reflect the region’s history. A great wine which, of course, implies risk, but also a profound knowledge of the raw material, the soul of a wine – grapes and the soil. It was then that Quinta da Muradella first started to take shape: a small winery whose objective is to endure over time with its wines. A question of faith…and intuition Mateo returned to Galicia and started to plant those strangely named grapes, some of which were not covered by the Regulatory Council’s guidelines. But he had faith in them. He had searched out old vineyards and made wines working from tiny plots (most of them not much bigger than a football field); this had given him, in his own words, “good sensations,” and he had found the personality of the wines in these spaces. “I saw a balance and I also had as a reference the experience of traditional winemakers, nurturing the wine from the very beginnings, from the vineyard.”

Empezó en 2007 a sacar su primer vino de Merenzao, apenas 300 botellas que supusieron la búsqueda de uvas adecuadas en más de 30 viñedos. Ahora otros viticultores han visto que la opción de Fernando, como la de Mateo, puede ser un camino para hacerse visibles entre los grandes vinos españoles. At the Adega Algueira winery in Ribeira Sacra (Lugo), Fernando González has also launched into the task of rescuing the Merenzao (or Bastardo), Albarello or Brancellao red grape varieties. Una de las mejores experiencias que disfruté en Roma fue la visita a la Iglesia de San Crisogono (para encontrarla hay que ir al Viale Trastevere cruzando el Ponte Garibaldi). Es un templo no demasiado grande y con un cierto aspecto de decadencia que guarda un magnífico “secreto” en su interior: una basílica de la época de Constantino situada en su subsuelo. Cuando entréis, no veréis ninguna indicación, hay que hablar con el sacristán para que abra la puerta que conduce al subsuelo y pagar una entrada de dos euros. Al bajar las escaleras, lo normal es encontrarse solo en mitad de una gran excavación arqueológica que va descubriendo una basílica paleocristiana con frescos del siglo VI y una estructura sorprendente. Raramente se encuentran turistas.

En Camden Town parece que se paró el tiempo hace mas de 20 años. Ahora hay un nueva razón para visitarlo: The Chin Chin, cocina experimental dedicada al desarrollo de productos de confitería. La idea de abrir esta heladería surgió por el uso del nitrógeno líquido en la cocina de Ferran Adrià. El diseño del espacio ha sido creado para tener una experiencia en el proceso de fabricación. El resultado ha sido un laboratorio lleno de probetas, tubos de ensayo, batas blancas... No sabes si preparan un helado o una pócima. ¿El Ice Cream? Probé cheesecake... Mmm... Se salió.

One of the best experiences I had in Rome was visiting San Crisogono Church (to find it you have to go to Viale Trastevere crossing Ponte Garibaldi). It’s not a particularly large church and has a decadent look about it that hides a magnificent ‘secret’ inside: a basilica from the era of Constantine located underneath. When you go inside you won’t see any signs – you have to talk to the sacristan, who’ll open the door to the basement in exchange for two euros. When you reach the bottom of the stairs you’ll find yourself alone in the middle of a large archaeological excavation, which is gradually uncovering the early Christian basilica complete with 6th Century frescoes and a surprising structure. You’ll rarely find any tourists.

The idea behind this peculiar ice cream shop came from the use of liquid nitrogen in Ferran Adriá’s cooking. The design of the place gives the feeling of participating in the production process; the result is a laboratory full of cylinders, test tubes, and white coats… You’re not sure if they’re preparing an ice cream or a potion. Manel Mayoral, un ciudadano de Verdú, un pueblo a 50 km. de Lleida, decidió dar vida a su pueblo de la misma manera que un mecánico da vida a un autómata. Para ello creó el Museu de Joguets i Autòmats (Museo de juguetes y autómatas) y se encuentra en plena Plaça Major. Se trata de un rincón que, para los nostálgicos de la infancia, como yo, es un lugar en el que perder horas y horas. Se divide en cuatro secciones: piezas de fútbol, juguetes relacionados con el campo, vehículos a pedales y cacharros relacionados con la feria. Futbolines, monociclos, trenes o títeres están presentes en un edificio lleno de magia.

En el último piso de la FNAC encontré una de las formas más económicas de contemplar tranquilamente la Acrópolis y sus alrededores. Tienen una terraza con mesas y una máquina expendedora donde por 1.50 euros te compras una cerveza bien fresquita. Si te entra hambre, a apenas cinco minutos se encuentra Spiros Bairaktaris (en la plaza de Monastiraki), un restaurante que sirve una carne asada deliciosa servida en pan de pita por 2 euros. Un plan perfecto para aquellos que van con un presupuesto ajustado.

La movida granadina ha sido relativa y merecidamente famosa desde los años 80, cuando grupos como TNT y 091 plantaron cara a la escena musical de Madrid y Barcelona. Víctor Lapido, hermano de Jose Ignacio, guitarrista de 091, regenta desde hace años el Ruido Rosa, un pequeñísimo local en el que suena la mejor música hecha con guitarras, bajos y baterías que uno puede escuchar en la ciudad. Ese no es su único encanto. El bar es el punto de reunión de todo aquel que es alguien en la escena musical granadina y, por ello, es habitual encontrar allí a J, de Los Planetas; a miembros de Lori Meyers, a Antonio Arias de Lagartija Nick o a la Elastic Band al completo. A perfect plan for those on a tight budget.

The ‘Granada scene’ has been relatively famous, and deservedly so, since the 1980s, when groups such as TNT or 091 started to respond to the whole scene emerging from bigger cities such as Madrid or Barcelona. For years, Víctor Lapido, brother of 091 guitarist Jose Ignacio, has run Ruido Rosa, a tiny place offering the best music created on guitar, drums and bass that you can hear in this Andalucian city. And that’s not the only good thing about it. The bar is the meeting point for anyone who is anyone on the Granada music scene; it’s common to bump into J from Los Planetas, members of Lori Meyers, Antonio Arias from Lagartija Nick or the whole Elastic Band. ¿Cuál es el dulce más rico que habéis probado? Yo lo tengo clarísimo: el pastel de Belén. Es una especie de tortita cubierta de nata con canela y azúcar glasé espolvoreados por encima. Los elaboran en una pastelería lisboeta llamada Pastéis de Belém, en el barrio del mismo nombre. Cuenta la leyenda, que la receta se creó en un convento anexo. Con la revolución liberal de 1820, se cerraron todos los conventos y la receta fue vendida al propietario de las instalaciones que se halla junto al convento. La receta sólo la conocen tres personas en el mundo y se transmite de generación en generación. La elaboración se realiza a puerta cerrada en el llamado ‘Taller del Secreto’.

Soy diseñador gráfico y estoy obsesionado con la iconografía del antiguo bloque comunista y, en general, de muchos regímenes belicistas de la época (que no con sus ideas, ¿eh?). Por eso disfruté tanto mi visita al parque Memento de la capital de Hungría. El parque, que no está terminado, transmite una sobria decadencia de tiempos más oscuros pero que forman parte de la historia de Hungría. Y parece que lo han puesto ahí para que no se olvide el pasado. Una curiosa mezcla de arte, memoria y divulgación en un lugar no frecuentado de manera masiva (al menos cuando yo pasé por allí). Está situado en la esquina de las calles Szbadkai y Baltoni, en la parte de Buda.

Ya no conservan el extremado encanto de antaño pero comer un bocadillo de pescado en los muelles de Eminonu sigue siendo una expriencia. Los puestos más o menos ‘oficiales’ (son barcazas) que están decentemente limpios y los trabajadores van vestidos de forma un tanto chapucera (imaginad que en los bares de Córdoba te atienden vestido de corto). Antes, había montones de barcos en los que los pescadores te hacían el bocadillo con el pescado más fresco que puedas encontrar y con verdura plantada en sus huertas. Ahora, de manera clandestina, alguno de esos pescadores se acerca a ratos por el muelle. Si coincide con vosotros, aprovechad.

Only three people in the world know the recipe, which is passed down from generation to generation. The pastries are made behind closed doors in the so-called ‘Secret Workshop.’

I’m a graphic designer and I’m obsessed with the iconography of the old communist block and, in general, of many military regimes of the era (though not with their ideas, ok?) That’s why I really enjoyed my visit to Memento Park in the Hungarian capital. The park, though unfinished, transmits the restrained decadence of darker times, but forms part of Hungary’s history. And it seems like they’ve put it there so that the past is not forgotten. It’s a strange mix of art, memory and propaganda in a place that’s not visited by masses of people (at least not when I was there). It’s on the crossroads of Szbadkai and Baltoni streets, in the Buda district.

Though it has lost the exquisite charm of years back, eating a fish baguette on the quay at Eminonu is still an experience. The more or less ‘official’ stalls (they’re barges) that are left are pretty clean, with rather scruffily dressed staff (imagine that you’re served in a bar in Cordoba by waiting staff dressed in shorts). In the past, there used to be loads of boats where the fishermen made baguettes with the freshest fish you could find, and vegetables from their allotments. Now, in a clandestine fashion, some of these fishermen appear every now and then at the quay. If you come across them, make the most of it.
