Simplemente, no lo necesita, ni depende tanto de ello como Venecia o Roma. A esta ciudad la gente emigra para trabajar, hacer dinero y emprender, y se nota en la actitud de sus habitantes. Vive muy centrada en su labor como epicentro de la poderosa industria de la moda, diseño industrial y finanzas. Nunca verás tantos hombres de negocio con trajes hechos a medida como aquí, ni mujeres vestidas con ropa de firma; pero Milán no es solo eso, es una ciudad cada vez más cosmopolita que ha logrado dejar atrás su pasado gris, y en la que sus calles se quedaban completamente vacías al caer la noche. El gobierno local, liderado por el ecologista Giuliano Pisapia, está contribuyendo a ello con la construcción de carriles bici y una mayor peatonalización de sus arterias urbanas. Aquí nunca te sentirás asediado por gente queriendo venderte algo. Milán se hace de rogar pero se deja explorar, y es aquí, precisamente, donde radica su encanto.

Milan is a city with little regard for tourism. It’s not a question of disdain. Simply, it doesn’t depend on it for survival in the way Venice or Rome do. People emigrate here to work, make money and start up new projects, and you notice this in the attitude of its residents. The city is focussed on its role as the epicentre of the powerful fashion houses, industrial design and financial industries. You’ll never see so many businessmen in bespoke suits as there are here, nor women in designer outfits. Yet Milan is not only this: it is an increasingly cosmopolitan city which has managed to leave behind its grey past, when nightfall meant deserted streets. The local government, led by green mayor Giuliano Pisapia, is contributing to this change, building bike lanes and improving pedestrian areas along the city’s main arteries. Here, you’ll never feel under threat from people trying to sell you something. Milan plays hard to get but it’s open to being explored; and that’s precisely where its charm lies.

Así que se mudó en cuanto le fue posible. Se matriculó en Diseño de Moda y cuando terminó no quiso moverse de allí. Ahora trabaja en una boutique de ropa en Ticinense. Ya no sale tanto de fiesta como cuando llegó. Ya no acude a los locales de moda ni sigue los ritmos de la ciudad. Sin embargo, sigue disfrutando de Milán “porque todo el mundo encuentra lo que quiere”.

He’s the owner of a small and picturesque vintage shop called the mauseoleum. “Although many people think otherwise, Milan is a very liveable city.” And that’s what he likes most about his town. He admits that things have changed, for better and for worse. “Now, people go out less and there’s not so much of a social life as before.” What hasn’t changed is his passion for old, second-hand markets where he buys pieces from the past, to give them a new life.

Elda | 84 años Nació en Vado Ligure pero desde hace 22 años vive en Milán, “una ciudad fascinante, viva, donde no cabe el aburrimiento..., una ciudad que se renueva constantemente”. Trabajó durante muchos años en la industria de la moda, sobre todo en la confección de bolsos y complementos. Pero un buen día abandonó la máquina de coser por el delantal y cambió tijeras y agujas por azúcar y levadura. El resultado fue una pastelería a la que llamó ‘Pane e Cioccolato’, un lugar delicioso y bien conocido en la Via Solari desde el que Elda crea y vende dulces y regalos.

She was born in Vado Ligure but has been living in Milan for 22 years, “a fascinating, lively city where it’s impossible to get bored... A city that’s constantly reinventing itself.” For many years, she worked in the fashion industry, most of all making bags and accessories. But one fine day she left the sewing machine for an apron, swapped the scissors and needles for sugar and flour. The result was a confectioner’s, which she named ‘Pane e Cioccolato’; a delicious, well-known place on Via Solari where Elda creates and sells pastries and gifts.

Este artículo quiere hacer un paréntesis en las noticias negativas que llegan desde este país mediterráneo y su capital, Atenas. Partimos una lanza por la herencia positiva que este pueblo ha dejado para toda la humanidad. De vivir hoy, ¿alguien sería capaz de decirle a Platón, Aristóteles, Sócrates, Epicuro o Diógenes que se marchasen del continente? Si es así, es que no sabe lo suficiente ni de sus obras, ni de sus vidas. Aquí van unas cuantas pinceladas de aquellos célebres vecinos de la excelsa capital griega. Porque el patrimonio no siempre se mide en números.

Hamburgo es una ciudad bonita en todas las épocas del año. En verano me gusta disfrutar de los bares que están a orillas del Alster. Decorados con flores de colores, se puede llegar tanto a pie como en canoa o barco. Están abiertos todo el día y se puede comer o cenar platos típicos alemanes. En invierno recomiendo los ‘Weihnachtsmarkt’, o mercados de Navidad, donde se bebe ‘Glühwein’ o vino caliente para combatir el frío.

Cuando se encuentre en Lourdes, asegúrese de participar en la procesión mariana de las antorchas. La noche se llena de reflexión y oración, y se maravillarán al ver personas de todas las edades y tipos que están tomando, en una noche especial, parte en un ritual. ¡No te lo pierdas!

Hamburg is a beautiful city at any time of the year. In summer, I like to enjoy the bars along the banks of the Alster. Colourful flowers provide the decoration and you can get there walking or by canoe or boat. They open all day and there are typical German dishes for lunch or dinner. In winter, I’d recommend the ‘Weihnachtmarkt’ or Christmas Markets, where you can drink ‘Glühwein’, mulled wine to combat the cold.

He tenido la suerte de pasar una noche en un pequeño barco fondeado en la menorquina cala Macarella. La fusión de la luz en la oscuridad, mirar unas enormes estrellas que brillaban con una intensidad inimaginable, la tertulia con los amigos en mitad del mar, dormirse con el suave mecer de las olas y su chapoteo, el chapuzón en el mar cuando el sol apenas asomaba en el horizonte... Una experiencia increíble.

Entre tanta belleza es normal que pasen inadvertidas. Me refiero a las fuentes de agua potable de Roma. Las hay en todas las ciudades italianas y se llaman ‘fontanelles’, aunque en Roma, debido a su forma de nariz alargada se les conoce como ‘nasoni’ (narizones). En verano, su presencia es especialmente agradecida, aunque es una pena ver cómo se desperdician tantos litros de agua. Habría que inventarse una forma de cerrarlas aunque pierdan un poco su peculiar forma.

Todavía quedan lugares por descubrir en Mallorca. Yo, al menos, este verano he descubierto las Salinas d´Es Trenc. Están en el sureste de la isla, en un espacio natural con una excepcional diversidad de aves. A veces hasta se ven flamencos. Hay visitas guiadas por dentro de las salinas que muestran cómo se produce la sal marina. Las montañas de sal son una experiencia única e inolvidable.

Amidst such beauty, it’s understandable that they go unnoticed. I’m talking about the drinking water fountains in Rome. Every Italian city has them and they’re called ‘fontanelles’ though in Rome, due to their shape, like a long nose, they’re known as ‘nasoni’ (big noses). In summer, their presence is especially appreciated, although it’s a shame to see so many litres of water go to waste. I guess they need to invent some way of turning them off, even if their peculiar shape is somewhat lost.

There are still places left to discover in Mallorca. I, at least, discovered the Salinas d’Es Trenc this summer. In the southeast of the island, this is a natural area with an exceptional diversity of birdlife. Sometimes you can even spot flamingos. There are guided tours of the flats, explaining how sea salt is produced. Viewing the salt mountains is a unique and unforgettable experience.

La increíble mezcla de arte, historia y ocio de la East Side Gallery, así como su ubicación urbanística, la convierten en una especie de torbellino transformador que recorre la ciudad de oeste a este y de norte a sur. Ve andando y recorre los barrios situados al sur. Imperdonable en verano no visitar las ‘playas’ (sí, sí, con auténtica arena) y tomar una cerveza en la ribera del Spree... ¡Y con música en directo!

Hemos descubierto en Nuremberg una nueva costumbre de los lugareños que consiste en ir a la plaza Beim Tier Gartenor, donde se encuentra la casa de Alberto Durero, a beber la cerveza del día que ofrece el bar Wanderer. Y como hay pocas mesas y sillas en la terraza del bar, otra de las costumbres es sentarse en el mismo suelo de la plaza y beber cerveza viendo a la gente pasar y disfrutando de un ambiente muy auténtico.

Pasear por la calle Zeedijk de la capital holandesa ya es una aventura. En el 143 se encuentra uno de mis locales favoritos de Ámsterdam, Latei, un sitio donde se puede tomar comida de Etiopía, sopas caseras, zumos, sándwiches... o comprar objetos de segunda mano. Realmente inusual, con aspecto vintage, es una rareza visual para disfrutar con todos los sentidos. Lo descubrimos el año pasado y hoy es visita obligada cuando vamos a Ámsterdam

Really unusual, with a vintage air, it’s a visual oddity and a delight for all the senses. We discovered it last year and now it’s a must whenever we’re in Amsterdam.
