We are honored and excited to have Patton featured on the cover this month. He truly is a joy to own and show. First of all, we need to thank Sobe’s owners for allowing us to breed him and giving us a wonderful litter. Also Karen, Kayla and Amy Beskau of Rio Gran have been amazing guides in my introduction to the dog show world. They have been fantastic with Patton. Patton is my first show Doberman, though my first two dogs as a child were Dobermans. I have always loved the breed, but have mainly concentrated on showing Paso Fino horses for the past 20 years, being awarded several national titles and earning my judge’s certificate with the United States Equestrian Federation and the Paso Fino Horse Association. All along, my goal was to get another Doberman once my husband and I had a larger home and yard. We soon moved into a new home, and I began the search. After doing some research online, I noticed Rio Gran in Hastings, Minnesota. Their facility was near my office, and, on a very out-of-character whim, I decided to head over there on my lunch break. At this point, I was only aware that Rio Gran showed Dobermans, and I intended to ask them if they had a recommended breeder. Once I arrived at their beautiful facility, I began speaking with the woman at the front desk, who turned out to be Karen Beskau. At the time, I didn’t even know she was the owner of Rio Gran nor that they had just had a litter of puppies! I spent a longer-than-appropriate lunch break speaking with Karen about the similarities between the dog and horse shows, including the commitment to breeding and the hard work needed to succeed. As we spoke, she mentioned she had just had a litter of puppies, but the whole litter was spoken for at the moment. Then, as I was about to leave, she asked whether I would consider coownership of a show puppy if one became available. Knowing Karen better now, this was also very out of character for her. Next thing I knew, I was meeting the puppies and my eye fell to a black and tan male, known only as “blue boy,” and it all began. I spent the remainder of my day figuring out how to tell my husband I met with a Doberman breeder, saw a litter of puppies, and might now begin showing dogs in addition to horses. Patton entered the ring at 6 months old, with breeder-owner-handler, Kayla Beskau. His first time in the ring he took Winners dog. Second day he took Best of Winners. The next show he also won Winners dog both days. In his third show, at 8 months old, he was named reserve to a 5 point major at the Land O’ Lakes Kennel Club show. Patton was undefeated in his age group and singled out from the puppy classes. Now, we had to wait for majors. Patton took his first major with a big win, Best of Winners at the Summer Solstice Specialty in Cambridge, Minnesota for a 5 point major at 13 months. He finished his championship at his next show with another major win. He received his first Best of Breed under Judge Ms. Beverly Capstick. Patton has been shown on a limited basis since completing his championship; his new Sobe brother and sisters have been getting their ring time. He still went on to finish his Grand Championship with a Best of Breed win. Patton has intensity in the ring and loves to show. He is negative for cardiomyopathy and clear for von Willebrand disease. When Patton is not showing, he is my jogging companion, lives with two Yorkshire terriers and travels to horse shows. This fall, he attended the August 2012

Paso Fino National Championships in Memphis with me and greeted horse enthusiasts from all over the United States and South America. He honestly received more compliments than my horse who took a Reserve National Championship. Patton also enjoys relaxing in local cafes and shops in our home town of Stillwater, Minnesota, a tourist river-town along the Saint Croix River. It is very dog friendly and Patton is a well-known member of the community. Local shop owners know him by name, bring him bags of dog treats and he loves the attention he receives meeting new people. Whether he is traveling to horse shows or along the river walk in our home town, he acts as an ambassador for the breed. Owning Patton has been a lifechanging experience for my entire family. If you see us at shows, you will find that Patton has a fan club, which includes my husband, parents and in-laws, my brother and family friends. Having grown up showing animals, we realize what a blessing and how special he is. When you are new to any ring, it is an unexpected surprise to have immediate success. All the credit needs to be given to Rio Gran in Hastings, Minnesota. Rio Gran was honored to be named a Breeder of Merit and has been involved in Dobermans for 28 years. They started breeding champions 9 years ago, resulting in over 21 champions. Karen continues to

As Junior Handlers, both Kayla and Amy were in the Top 10 in their breeds nationally and #1 in Minnesota. Kayla has done an amazing job owner-handling Patton and has handled numerous Rio Gran Dobermans and Boston Terriers to championships. A year and a half ago, I walked into Rio Gran and just started asking questions. Out of the experience, I got the most amazing dog who introduced us to wonderful new friends, brought our entire family even closer together and is taking us down an exciting path as we wait to see what is next in his show career. PennyLane Dobermans of owning and breeding the DPCA Bitch Of The Year, but also gained special and lasting friendships with Deb Anderson, Marlene Biglow and Wendy Dietz. We are very proud that the foundation for Marlene’s Seven’s Kennel started with our dogs. Subsequent co-breedings with Marlene gave us a Canandian National Specialty Best Of Breed Winner, and also Winner’s Bitch at the Canadian National twice, as well as many American/Canadian Champions. We have just co-bred another litter with Deb Anderson and look forward to seeing them in the ring late summer. We have also been lucky enough to co-own and breed with Pat and Joe Policastrom, Tazman Dobermans. We co-own our wonderful Ch. Pen-

nyLane’s Worth The Wait with Pat and Joe, and have co-bred two litters producing multiple Champions. While the champions are wonderful, the friendship with these super people is so very dear to us. So many amazing people have come into our lives through our years in Dobermans. We know our life has been enriched by all of the experiences we have gained. We have never bred a lot of litters and will continue to breed on a limited basis. Now we try to give back by mentoring and giving newcomers an entrée into our breed and sport. One of our biggest fears is that there are not a lot of young people in our breed anymore, and fewer

still, young , dedicated breeders. It is an expensive sport, and a hard go in Dobermans in particular. It is vital to our breed for our experienced breeders and handlers to mentor and encourage youth. We would like to take the opportunity to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, all of our owners, for their love of our dogs, their dedication and their cherished friendships. Drummer owed so much to Wrath/Liberator Dobermans and Pat and Brian, including his beautiful grandmother, Am/Can Ch. Wrath’s High Society. Drummer now lives on in part of the Wrath/Liberator breeding program through his son Am/Can Ch. Tallyesyn Dream Chaser and all of Chase’s Wrath/Liberator kids and grandkids. Congrats and thank you to Pat and Brian for all of your countless contributions to the Doberman breed in both Canada and the United States!

Puppies will appear in show rings in both Canada and the United States in the not so distant future! Holly and Steve’s friendship, mentoring and simple generosity with their time, experience and support has meant so much to me over the years.
