Alisa, Jon and I want to Thank You for introducing us to the wonderful world of dog shows. Because of your help, we learned what it was to own a Champion dog, and now a Grand Champion daughter of that dog. We’ve been blessed to see a son of our first Champion go on to Best In Show, and see the other puppies go to great homes and sometimes great show careers of their own. Now we are getting ready to try a new phase by breeding our girl to an outstanding dog and hopefully carrying this exciting world to a new dimension. It would have never happened without you, and your help and support. Thank you seems so inadequate! We are blessed to know you. - Barbara and John An exciting breeding planned to GCh. DPM Interviews
pro handler
Mary Leahy How did you start in dogs? My family has always owned and loved dogs. I don’t remember ever being without a dog in my life. Why a Doberman? I think I was 11 or 12 years old when my uncle took us to see either The Doberman Gang or The Daring Dobermans. I couldn’t believe how agile and beautiful they were. I was in love. I promised myself I would own not one, but five of my own Dobermans when I grew up. Tell us about your first Doberman. We were living in the country, in Spring Green, Wisconsin. There were kids to play with on neighboring farms. I had heard a family had moved in down the road a couple of miles away. My brother and I rode our horses over to meet them. They had kids alright, but best of all they had Dobermans!! Ten, five month old puppies! Oh, my God, I couldn’t believe it! I went every day to play with the puppies. I wanted one so badly, but I was 13 years old and had no money to buy one. One day, the father, who always admired my 28 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine
horse, asked if I wanted to trade her for a puppy. I thought hard about it while I sat in the pen and decided what I already knew. Yes, I would trade. I remember thinking as the man was reaching out to grab the first female that came into his grasp, “pick me a good one.” The black puppy girl and her blue registration papers were placed in my hands. It was the start of my future and passion with Dobermans. What led to handling? My Dobermans were obedience dogs. I was 17 years old and I met a woman with beautiful German Shepherds. She liked how I was with the dogs and asked if I would like to show her Shepherd in the Breed ring. Yes, was the answer. She was older, with a lot of knowledge and helped teach me how to show them. My mother had Great Danes and I began showing them, then Afghans. My Dobermans were pet quality and it wasn’t until I moved to Oregon as an adult, that I sought out a Doberman to show. I bought a beautiful red female that Jan Van Wormer led me to. I taught her everything I
knew, but boy, there was so much more to learn. I met Gene and Marge Cox and through her encouragement, guidance and humor, I kept going. Terra did not win her championship, but she was a great dog to practice with. Marge Cox sold me Maco’s Sugar Bear when he was five months old. He finished his championship in the U.S. and Canada and he got his WAE. I started showing his puppies and won championships on them. I started taking clients when my own dogs that I had been showing were finished or close to finishing. Who was your most memorable dog? I truly cannot give a specific dog. I have loved and have been loyal to every dog in my house, past and present. They are all most memorable in my heart. What was your most memorable win? I have had very exciting times in the Breed ring and everyone that knows me, knows that I love finishing dogs for people, but when I finished CH Maco’s Sugar Bear WAE at the Reno Doberman Pinscher Club, I August 2011
remember every detail of that day. The best part was all my peers were so excited for me. I have to mention Marge Brooks. She made the biggest impact on me, starting out in the Doberman Breed ring. I watched and studied her technique, style and confidence. I loved the way she carries herself in the ring and win or lose, her sportsmanship was unbelievable. She often times gave me encouragement and handling tips when I was in the ring with her. I believe I take with me her influence every time I enter the ring. What are your future goals? I wish to become a judge. I would love to somehow be a part of mentoring or educating future judges on this wonderful breed, the Doberman Pinscher. Do you have any closing thoughts? Encouragement to future handlers; most of us start out ownerhandling. I found out for me, to be really good, make sure your dogs are in the best possible condition and trained their best. Always watch the best handlers, study them, watch how they are with the dogs they show and incorporate what you like into your own style. You cannot show every dog the same way. Every dog is different and you have to really know them and be their friend to get the results you want in the ring.
