In certain conditions it can transfer 100 percent of the drive to the rear wheels to maximise traction. Mated to either the new turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol or 1.6-litre diesel versions, the ALL4 Countryman is as surefooted as a car of this size can be. The seamless transfer of power is virtually undetectable; this is four-wheel drive for dummies, as there are no complicated buttons to make it all work. All the driver will notice is that the Cooper S ALL4 hauls itself out of tight bends with very little effort, and every one of its 181bhp can be deployed almost all the time. There’s no obvious cost in terms of agility or smoothness either. The Countryman is just as pointy and keen to play as the hatchback, although its larger dimensions and secure four-wheel drive mean it’s not quite the hooligan’s delight. But it’s as sharp as all but the most rabid wheelsmith could want, particularly as it does so while sacrificing little in terms of comfort. Quiet and efficient, the Countryman will pick off long distance journeys with ease, and thanks to slightly taller tyres, the ride quality is better too. The rest of the package is typical Mini; there are stacks of personalisation options, the cabin is retro-heaven and well constructed, and there is a version to suit almost every budget. The Mini Countryman may not be the most practical car in this class, but what it does achieve is extending the Mini values – sharp driving experience, a premium
