+HOOR We certainly live in an interesting part of the world. Indeed, Brighton and Hove along with the surrounding area has the lot; all the right shops and services, a stunning coastline, plus a fascinating mix of people that help make the place tick. And it’s some of those individuals that we recognise in this issue with our exclusive Power List which, for the first time, names the 20 local men and women with the most influence and impact on our daily lives. They range from the more obvious, like our Green MP, to the less evident, such as the editor of Gscene. Have we got it right? Whatever you think it’s a list that’s guaranteed to get people talking. One face you’ll instantly recognise this month is that of our celebrity cover Ewan McGregor, who talks to us about films, family and the price of fame. He really doesn’t like the tabloid press. On the competition front there are two fantastic prizes on offer. There’s the chance to win a £1,000 boudoir photo shoot, plus we have £1,200 worth of tanning and beauty treatments up for grabs to ensure you look your best in 2011. Don’t get too carried away with next year though, as we have yet to work our way through Christmas. Which is why you should check out our exclusive gift guide highlighting some rather more unusual presents; from buying a share in a racehorse to presenting your loved one with an island paradise. That would earn a few brownie points. We also put your questions on up-coming trends to Brighton and Hovel fashion experts, learn which seasonal produce to use when cooking at home and check out The Dyke Pub & Kitchen. Somehow, we still have time to keep fit with Rachael Woolston, chat with Gordon Ramsay and reveal another secret of the City. It’s almost too much!

Ok, so rocking chairs don’t have the coolest of images. When mentioned, one tends to imagine either a whisky-drenched cowboy staring into the sunset, or a frail older lady quietly doing her knitting. Not so with this rather smart looking walnutstained beech chair, designed by Brazilian Reno Bonzon. The shape of the Giavota was born after Bonzon analysed the imprint he left when he sat in deep snow during a stay in the French Alps. It’s sure to be a future classic, so put in your order now. £1,020 from notonthehighstreet.com

7+( 1(:6« OUR MONTHLY LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES MAKING THE HEADLINES CHEERING NEWS
A new beer for the younger more discerning drinker has been created for Brighton. It comes from the award-winning Sussex brewery WJ King, is called Brighton Best and was officially launched last month at an evening event attended by more than 100 publicans. WJ King CEO Nigel Lambe (pictured with wife Orla Lambe the Marketing Director) explains: “We really felt there was an opportunity to create a beer specifically for the younger and more knowledgeable drinker in Brighton who really cares about the provenance of the food and drink they consume and are looking for local products.”
FIELD WORK
Five farm fields north of Brighton which have lain fallow for years are being restored as downland nature reserves criss-crossed by almost seven miles of new public footpaths. The land, either side of the top of Ditchling Road, will be grazed by cattle which will help encourage downland species of plants, insects, birds and animals. It’s hoped fencing will be complete by the end of this month.
CROWD FREEZER
An outdoor ice rink holding up to 200 skaters is due to open this month in the Royal Pavilion Gardens. The council has given it the green light for a three month period. The project, which will create 130 mainly part time jobs, will include a 700 sq m rink which is roughly the size of three tennis courts. There will also a 200-seater bar plus restaurant. Planning committee Chair Cllr Lynda Hyde says: “We’ve put in strict conditions to ensure the temporary buildings are removed and the grounds perfectly reinstated. There are also measures to control noise and opening hours and to protect trees and the Pavilion itself.”

SMILES BETTER
Brighton and Hove Council staff dealing with parking complaints have been told not to smile in case it makes motorists even more irate and angry. GMB union spokesman Mark Turner says the advice, given at staff induction training,is “laughable.” He believes that “smiling and cracking jokes is the best way of defusing a conflict situation” and says the GMB didn’t send him on courses telling him not to smile at the negotiating table. The council says it’s all about staff using “body language that would not inflame the situation.”
Brighton and Hove has retained its position as one of the most sustainable cities in the country. It’s the only one in the UK to keep a top three slot four years running in a survey carried out by the environmental charity Forum for the Future which charts sustainability in Britain’s 20 largest cities. Brighton and Hove was one of the first to embrace the 10:10 campaign to reduce its overall carbon footprint. The survey put the City in top spot for the proportion of people with qualifications; 75.5 per cent have NVQ2 or equivalent. It was in second place for the number of business start ups.
Police arrested a man walking through the centre of Brighton on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon. He was wearing a wetsuit and had a harpoon. A police spokesman explains: “The man told officers he was on his way to the beach to do some fishing.”
CASH DRIVE
Madeira Drive in Brighton is among the top money making roads in the country when it comes to parking fines. According to a Sunday Times survey of 400 councils Madeira last year brought in £180,740 from tickets being handed out. This puts it in fifth spot behind roads Green Lane in Harringey (£564,000), Alum Rock Road, Birmingham (£351,420), Liverpool Street, London (£201,021) and Clarendon Road, Leeds (£182,500). Maximum parking fines are £120 in London and £70 elsewhere with plans to increase them to £140 and £100. NOVEMBER 2010

Secretary of The Brighton Society In 1973, a planning application caught the eye of Selma Montford. The developers were looking to fell 90 per cent of the mature trees on the site to make way for four blocks of flats. Selma Montford and a couple of her neighbours met with the architect and showed him that by rearra nging the blocks he could actually keep 90 per cent of the trees. The planning application was amended and the trees saved. This led to the formation of the Brighton Society in 1974 by Selma Montford and her neighbour John Morle y. Since then, the society has worked tirelessly to protect histor ic buildings in Brighton and to ensure new developmen ts are appropriate and practical for the City’s residents. From the successful renovation of the Bird Cage Bands tand, which the society campaigned for over 30 years to achieve, to the building of the Jubilee Library, to the listing of the Connaught School, the Society has contin ually acted to preserve and improve our City.

Primary Care Trust Chairman Healthcare is divided into ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ care. Primary is provided by the likes of doctors, dentists, opticians and pharmacists. These services are managed by the local Primary Care Trust (PCT) which decides what health services the community needs. A primary care trust (PCT) is responsible for assessing the health and wellbeing needs of its local community and then buying the health services to meet that need. This is known as commissioning. A PCT will also monitor the quality of the services and whether services need to change if health needs change or new treatments become available. Brighton born Alan McCarthy is the Chair of the City’s PCT, NHS Brighton and Hove. He took the role following his retirement from the post of Chief Executive of Brighton and Hove City Council, which he held for four and a half years. In his final year the Council was recognised by the Audit Commission as an ‘excellent, four star’ local authority. The Trust looks after a budget of £461million, which makes Alan McCarthy a significant figure in overseeing our healthcare needs.

Michael [Bay, the director who went on to make the Transformers movies] can be a bit explosive to work with, but at least I had Scarlett Johansson with me to nudge and say, ‘Oh God, Here we go again!’” The film, that was universally panned by critics, was certainly a low point in his career, but Ewan’s never taken it to heart, preferring a relaxed approach to the criticism: “I don’t know what people were expecting from that film but I think that it was Michael’s time to get a kicking and we just happened to be the cast… Actually, I don’t take any of The Island experience personally. I know the producers, who, very nicely, said some bloody terrible things about us, used Scarlett and me as an excuse. But I’ve never made a conscious decision not to make big films anymore. I just go for stories that appeal to me, and, actually, it’s always nice to go back in to making a big film.” Big films may not have been on the cards in recent years, but big names certainly have featured in his life. In 2007 he had the pleasure of working with Woody Allen for the first time and experienced his notoriously brief meetings with his actors: “I had no idea,” admits Ewan. “I went out to New York for our first meeting. I got to his little editing suite, just outside Central Park, and waited and waited. Then, finally, Woody came in and said, ‘We’re making the film in the Summer. Thanks for coming in.’ And that was it; then he was gone!” So what was the inspiration that got Ewan into films and rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in Hollywood? Could it be something to do with the fact that Bleak House and Star Wars actor Denis Lawson is his uncle?
“ It’s a unique relationship I have with him. He was always in London and then when I moved to London he was always here if I needed anybody. We have an honest relationship with one another and we have a good laugh.”
W
Denis Lawson played Wedge Antilles, part of Rogue Squadron, in the first Star Wars trilogy. Surely, it was exciting for a child to be related to someone in the original George Lucas films?
Film: Down with Love (2003)
“For sure,” he agrees. ”I also always had this love for old black and white movies and I don’t know which came first. I’m sure the fact that he was an actor made me look at acting in a different way and then when I wanted to become one, of course, I was looking at in a very different way.

“To go to see Star Wars for the ďŹ rst time when you are seven at the cinema is quite a big deal anyway. The fact that he was in it made it especially cool. He survived all three movies but I can remember asking him about it. I always got the sense from him it was like two weeks work at Shepperton Studios, and I understood it wasn’t that big a deal to him compared to some of his other work. Now I can understand that!â€? Ewan’s current success may have something to do with the fact that his mother allowed him to drop out of school at 16. Was it a case of just getting out, or was acting the impetus to leave?
“I wouldn’t want to talk about that. I would never want to talk about my marriage and the tabloids at the same time, in the same breath, to tell you the truth. There’s always been media interest and therefore public interest in the lives of actors and stars, though. “I’m sure there wouldn’t have been all those stories in Hollywood in the 1940s and ’50s of gay actors being in fake marriages and stuff if that hadn’t been the case. So there’s always been this idea of a public interest in what stars’ lives are like but I don’t know if it’s ever been to the extent it is now.
“I couldn’t see that I was learning anything that was of any relevance to me, he admits. “Now I see I was wrong. There’s a lot I could have got from school that I didn’t. At the time, though, I didn’t really get the point, didn’t get the basic idea about education that this might be of any use to me later on.
But isn’t he relatively well removed from that world now?
“Now whether that’s because my teachers didn’t instil that into me or whether I just completely focussed on becoming an actor or that I didn’t bother, I don’t know but certainly when I got the chance to leave it was like an opportunity. Getting out of school was a huge relief to me.
“Think of Britney Spears in America who is a victim of it, for example. I was so sickened by those pictures a few years back of hundreds and hundreds of photographers outside her house, and an ambulance trying to get through, trying to get through the paparazzi, trying to get to her home. I felt so ashamed of the human race; people can be so irresponsible.
The Scottish actor is notoriously protective of his family and the documentary Long Way Round was one of the ďŹ rst times that the McGregor family has been shown off to the world media. Perhaps it’s because Ewan and his wife, Eve, don’t go looking for attention that the tabloids now generally leave them alone. Ewan is cagey on the subject:
“Yeah, he agrees. “I mean what can you do about sections of the media that base stories on ‘actors without make up: see how s**t they look in real life!’? That’s just appalling.
Whether he stays out of the tabloids in the future remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure; with reports of Long Way Down circling the internet, and a handful of ďŹ lms in the production stage, Ewan certainly won’t be dropping off our radar any time soon. 62

he Argus Achievement Awards celebrated its 9th anniversary this year rewarding the ‘unsung’ heroes of Sussex including: teachers, carers, volunteers, businesses and community events. The winners were announced at a moving ceremony hosted by TV presenter Nicholas Owen on 10th October at Brighton’s Theatre Royal. American Express sponsored the Outstanding Contribution to Sussex Award, which recognises inspirational people and their remarkable achievements. Previously the Award has been won by some of the County’s greatest residents such as heroic World War One veteran, Henry Allingham. This year’s worthy winner, Tim Hutchings, received the Award in recognition for his outstanding contribution in bringing a marathon to Brighton.
and along with a small team - and thousands of volunteers - he made sure the 2010 event was a complete success. Tim said, “I’m really proud of everything and everyone who came together to make a marathon, in Brighton, such a huge success. It was a brilliant event that competed with some of the long-standing marathons held across the world in cities such as New York and Chicago. As well as the great atmosphere, I’m immensely proud of the money we collectively raised for a number of important charities.”
Community Spirit 12,000 Brighton Marathon runners raised over £3 million for deserving charities in the UK and across the world. The race brought the community together and over 85,000 people lined the 26-mile route to cheer on the runners.
Marathon Man Tim is no stranger to awards. He is a regular marathon runner, an Olympian, the holder of two world cross country silver medals as well as being a 1986 Commonwealth Games 5,000m bronze medallist. The Brighton Marathon was Tim’s brainchild; he was the real driving force behind the inaugural event held earlier this year
During the 2010 race American Express manned a water station providing well deserved relief for the runners. American Express is also planning to support the 2011 event to help the marathon team make it even bigger and better than last year. The event also generated over £3.6million for the economy in Brighton and Hove

Q&A with Marathon Race Director and Outstanding Contribution to Sussex Award Winner, Tim Hutchings Q1 You’ve just won the Outstanding Contribution to Sussex Award for your involvement in the Brighton Marathon, how does this make you feel? through the participation of businesses such as shops, hotels and restaurants in providing facilities for those taking part and watching the race.
What’s coming next? Plans for the race in 2011 are to make the event bigger and better with 15,000 runner and charity places and 100,000 spectators expected on Sunday April 10. Over 230 charities will be involved and represented within the charity village on Madeira Drive at the end of the race. The event will be spread across the whole weekend in April with entertainment throughout the route with many businesses from across Brighton getting involved. Tim Hutchings continues, “We’re working hard already to continue the success we experienced this year by making the Brighton Marathon a key event in the Brighton calendar. Bringing together people from across Sussex and the world as both runners and volunteers to raise millions of pounds for charity makes it such a feel good event and we’re hoping for a great turn out next year to support us. General entries are already full, but charity places are still available. We’re busy recruiting the backbone of the event – the volunteers.”
American Express in the community As the City’s largest private-sector employer, American Express has a thirty year heritage of supporting local community initiatives. The American Express Community Stadium, set to be completed for Summer 2011, will undoubtedly be a major destination for Brighton & Hove. As well as being the longawaited new home for the Albion, the 22,500 capacity stadium is attracting huge interest from the wider general public and the Brighton & Hove business community. It will have a broad reaching appeal for people of all interests and ages in Brighton & Hove and across Sussex. In addition to providing outstanding sporting facilities, the stadium will be hosting exciting special events and entertainment as well as educational and charity initiatives to benefit the whole community.
A Being recognised for the work behind the marathon is fantastic; it’s a proud achievement to be ranked alongside people such as Derek Hunnisett and Mushtaq Ahmed. But I always stress that it’s not just me. I’m part of a team that made the event happen and let’s not forget all the volunteers who turned out on the day to help, as well as the commercial sponsors who helped provide the essential financial support. Q2 What inspired you to organise the Brighton Marathon and get the whole community onboard with you?
A I knew I had the knowledge and skill set to be able to put an event of this kind together – it was just something I really wanted to do. Brighton is a great place and the perfect venue to host a high profile event like this. Starting at Preston Park, the route takes in the best of the City; the Brighton Pavillion and fabulous stretches of Coastal Road, including panoramic views where the South Downs meet the English Channel. I wanted to showcase what a great place the City of Brighton is. Q3 As a regular marathon runner what would be your top tips for those preparing for next year’s race?
A Running 26 miles is no mean feat and something that all runners need to prepare for. Developing a plan in advance and sticking to it is crucial. We also run three training days in the build up to the event so I’d recommend attending one of those too. Q4 What are your hopes for the Brighton Marathon in the future? A Bringing the marathon to Brighton was always one of my big dreams and I feel so proud now that we’ve achieved this, despite setbacks over the past seven years. Now we just want to keep it growing and growing until we rival some of the greatest marathon events across the world.
More widely, American Express has funded a total of £245,000 in local community grants since 2006 via its partnership with the Sussex Community Foundation. Its employees are actively involved in a wide range of volunteering and fundraising initiatives across the City. American Express provides sponsorship to some of the region’s biggest community events; the Brighton Marathon, the Brighton Festival and the Stonewall Walk. This year is the first year American Express has been involved in The Argus Achievement Awards, sponsoring The Outstanding Contribution to Sussex Award.

Q. I always find that camel colours wash me out, but it’s such a huge look this Winter I don’t really want to give up. How can I wear this shade without looking like I’m ill? A. “Camel is huge this winter but if it washes you out then you could try an animal print with its chocolate, honey and golden browns to warm your skin tone,” says Michelle Terras, owner of vintage boutique Tramp. “Leopard print is bang on trend for this season but you must remember not to overkill! Try to only wear one piece, whether it’s a coat or belt, a bag or pair of shoes. A one-off vintage piece will complement any wardrobe and can last you a lifetime. This 50s leopard print faux fur coat (overleaf) is great for daytime with jeans and boots or over a cocktail dress for the evening.”
Q. Are there any trends from Spring/Summer which I can use again this season? I’ll be buying a few key pieces from the A/W collections, but wondered if there were any styles sticking around or should I just start my wardrobe from scratch? A. “Maxi dresses are here to stay,” confirms MeMe Boutique owner Louise Shiangkwang. “Layer up with belted cardis, thick tights and winter boots. Also, warm up your 50s style Summer floral dress and match with a calf skimming coat, and cute kitten heels to bring out the Mad Men’s Betty Draper in you.”
Q. Every year I go for the same style of black dress when it comes to Christmas parties. I have three very similar dresses that I just jazz up with new accessories. I’d really like to be braver with my party wear this year and try something a bit different. What should I be looking for? A. “Firstly I would suggest a new colour that’s not too far away from your normal black, such as Navy Blue or deep purple,” says stylist and owner of Walk in Wardrobe Katherine Tanswell. ”Then I would suggest you highlight your best features when choosing the style. For great legs go short, or if you prefer long, go for a high split. For a fuller bust go for a V neck, as deep as you dare! For a safe option choose an empire line dress and above all add some sparkle!” NOVEMBER 2010

Q. What do I do if none of the current ‘in’ trouser shapes suit me? Peg trousers, harem pants, cigarette leg; they all just make me look shorter and I run back to my not-so-cool bootlegs. Help! A. Tramp’s Michelle Terras says: “You know you look and feel great in bootlegs, so instead of ditching them for the newer shape just modify them to bring them more up to date. How about trying a ared jean in light faded denim, tight to the knee then aring at the bottom. A turn-up would create a 70s bohemian feel and look great teamed with a Cuban heeled cowboy boot, checked western shirt and tasseled suede bag. Or for the evening try wearing a black bootleg velvet trouser, with a tuxedo jacket or boyfriend blazer, sleeves rolled up and high-heeled platform sandals. When wearing heels you must ensure that the hem is about half an inch off the oor to make the legs look as long as possible.â€?
Q. I’ve just had a major clear out of my makeup bag and I’m ready to restock. What colours should I be buying and are there any particularly strong daytime looks I should be trying to copy? A. Louise Eaton, owner of Tranquility in the City says “as with your wardrobe you need some key items that will mix and match with seasonal ‘trend’ colours. Pale bieges, golds and neutral eyeshadows would be perfect to mix with this season’s deep purple and berry shades for evening. For a relaxed day look, Abbey Clancey and Coleen Rooney both skip the eyeshadow for a slick of mascara and a healthy bronzed glow using sheer foundation, bronzing powder, peachy blush and a sheer lipgloss that will take minutes to apply.
Q. Last Winter I lived in my Ugg boots and was very comfortable. But this year I’ve started a new job and my casual jeans and slouchy boots look is just not up to scratch. I need to be smarter, but don’t want to lose the comfort level! Is there a smart alternative to the Ugg? A. MeMe Boutique’s Louise Shiangkwang says: “There are so many different styles of boots around this winter from Chelsea to sky-highs but if it’s comfort and style you’re after, then the riding boot ticks all the boxes!
Q. The Summer has left my hair a mousey colour rather than a rich brown. I’d love to liven it up a bit with a new shade, but don’t know what to go for. I’ve got fair skin and brown eyes. A. “As the season is changing it is the ideal time to update your colour with luxurious and indulgent Autumnal tones, says Essensuals Brighton Technical Director Chris Stead.

Make-up artist Bobbi Brown says: “For that subtle, messy, cool line, apply kohl eye pencil on the inside rim on the top of the eye and blink. Hair feeling at? Give your locks a super-charged boost with a volumising conditioner after shampooing. We tested out three potentials for thicker tresses. James Brown London Thickening Conditioner, ÂŁ5.99 (Boots, North Street, Brighton) It was difďŹ cult to achieve a luxurious lather with the consistency of this conditioner. ow the weather has turned wet and cold, most people find it hard to stick to an exercise routine. Add to that the fact that wearing lots of layers means it is easy to lose touch with what your figure looks like, and it’s no small wonder that many people fall off the fitness band wagon in the Winter months. But set yourself a fitness goal now and it will keep you motivated and feeling fantastic whatever the weather. Setting a target is the main factor that contributes to those who are successful with a fitness regime and those that aren’t. Of course, when the weather is nice, it’s easier to exercise but the real reason people stay committed in Summer is because they are working towards getting into their bikini. In the Winter when the thought of seeing the sun seems a distant dream, switching your focus to a fitness goal like
entering a race is a great alternative.
It need not be a long run, or even a serious one. Depending on your fitness level choose from a charity 5km, a cycling event or if you want a real challenge, go for a marathon. Before you say, ‘I could never do that,’ think again. No matter what your level of fitness, if you give yourself sufficient time to train – and a handy incentive down anything is possible. If you need proof look no further than our FitBitch clients. A few weeks ago 14 women from FitBitch Boot Camp, ranging in age from 35 to 59, travelled to France to take part in an annual 16k race through the centre of Paris. Over half had never run a race, or had run more than 5k. So what motivated them to enter something so daunting? W

“I wanted to do it for the challenge and to prove to myself I could do it, explains Stephanie Scheir, 36, a make up artist. “And doing it as part of a group meant that there was always someone to train with, which made it fun. So, how do you go from complete beginner to running a race? First off, choose an event of the right distance and in a location which appeals. For instance, part of the incentive for our FitBitch Paris runners was the thought of having a weekend away. “We booked a restaurant for the evening after the race and all had Champagne, says Tanya Taylor, 36, a mum of four who lost 7lbs during her training. “It made it taste even better. Also, give yourself enough time to train, which will depend on the length of the run and your current fitness levels. A good rule of thumb, give yourself at least ten weeks if training for anything longer than 5k, more if longer than 10k. For information about events Visit Runner’s World (runnersworld.co.uk) or Running Bug (runningbug.co.uk). Most crucially ensure you follow a training plan that increases your distance gradually, so you gain confidence and strength and prevent injury. At FitBitch, we run dedicated training groups in addition to our usual boot camp. These include training plans, weekly led runs, as well as Twitter support groups where members can share routes and arrange to meet. Alternatively, most personal trainers (visit the National Register of Personal Trainers) will devise training plans for a fee, or go online at Runner’s World for their interactive Smart Coach free training plans. But don’t be scared that this means having to train every day. As long as you are consistent and don’t miss weeks on end you will be fine. Everyone misses a few sessions, even me, but you always do more than you would if you didn’t have a plan to follow. Most important for success, though, is to train with a group of friends, or join a running group . Having someone to run with, to share your trials, tribulations and anxieties, makes all the difference. “I’d always run by myself before but training with a group was a revelation! says Belinda Muir, 50, part of the FitBitch Paris team. “It made even the challenging runs seem so much easier having others to chat to as we ran.
motivate you to continue to exercise, even when it’s all over. And the best thing of all? You’ll feel great about your body even whilst you are on the journey to getting fitter because every extra kilometre or mile you achieve is an accomplishment. And if you eat right, you will lose inches along the way without even thinking about it. If all this talk of running still doesn’t help to motivate you though, it is just weeks until Christmas. And with all those parties looming, thinking about getting into that little black dress and looking good in it should do the trick. Check out our new running groups for inspiration.
Race your figure into shape Type of runner: “Eek, I can’t even run for the bus. ParkRun. A free, friendly 5k run that takes place every Saturday in Hove Park. It’s a great way to start running and is very welcoming for beginners. parkrun.com Type of runner: “I run 5ks. Slowly, but I run them. Brooks 10K, Sunday November 21st 2010. Try this annual flat race along Brighton seafront. It’s on home soil so it is a great race for those looking to step up from the 5k. Type of runner: “I need to be challenged. The HellRun series, various dates. These races are 10-12 miles cross country over various terrain, including a bog. FitBitch Boot Camp are running a dedicated FitBitchLisbon runner’s group which will start training in November. lisbon-half-marathon.com Type of runner: “I’m after a life changing run. Brighton Marathon, April. There can only be one... the City’s second marathon. All the spaces have sold out but you can still run for charity. FitBitch Boot Camp will be running dedicated marathon camps in January so email fbfitness@aim.com to secure your place. 62
Deborah Corocoan, 35, a solicitor agrees: “I was terrified of doing the race and only entered it because everyone else did and I didn’t want to let the rest of my friends down. “But training with everyone every week made it fun, and helped me build my distance and my confidence. When I crossed that finish line it was the biggest buzz. “For me, it became about more than just staying in shape and getting fitter. It’s given me confidence in all areas of my life because achieving that has made me feel anything is possible.â€? RACY LITTLE NUMBER Buying a racehorse for someone is a pretty big gamble. For starters, thoroughbred horses tend to cost in the region of ÂŁ30,000 and what if it doesn’t even get close to winning? A more cost effective way of doing things (and perhaps less risky as far as presents go) is horse leasing and part ownership. MILKING IT It might seem like a comical suggestion, but in recent years companies such as Practical Presents have turned farm animals as Christmas presents into an incredible opportunity for charity. Rather than buying the animal for a loved one, your money goes towards supplying a needy family in poorer areas of the world with food or resources. Ducks, which lay eggs almost daily, cost just £12 to buy for a Bangladeshi family, while cows to produce milk for a Bolivian community are £97. Does Mum really need more scented candles anyway? See practicalpresents.org
GRAPES OF CASH Aged for over 100 years, the Henri IV Dudognon Heritage has earned the title of the most expensive Cognac in the world, and at over £2million a bottle, we’re not really surprised. The tipple’s rather over-the-top message of ‘The DNA of Cognac, the essence of the water of life…’ might not explain why this particular drink is so expensive, but its bottle (which is made of yellow gold, sterling platinum and is encrusted with 6,500 brilliant cut diamonds) certainly does. See most-expensive-cognac.com, of course.

A spacious living room overlooks the front gardens and will be a fantastic large space to decorate and fill with belongings. Another point worth mentioning is that with the underfloor heating, one doesn’t need to worry about accommodating for radiators when styling a room, which helps this room define the ‘canvas’ aspect of this house.
We think you’ll agree, that along with its double insulation and 75% low energy lighting, this is one property that not only looks the part, but also ticks the eco box. 62

Indeed, it’s true that many old style boozers are failing. But there are also pubs that are thriving; places that have quality and standards, that don’t compromise on the food and drink, that provide real service, that are clean and well decorated. And the vast majority of these successful pubs are either independent (whether free houses or tenancies) or part of small groups whose owners hold the reins loosely. Businesses that are run by committed people who care about what they do, and build relationships and partnerships with the communities they belong to, and with their suppliers and customers. Brighton and Hove have a disproportionate quantity of such venues – perhaps due to a combination of discerning customers and creative managers – and they come in a refreshing variety of styles. One of the more popular pubs has been Hove’s own Connaught, which has offered classy renditions of traditional food backed by well-kept beer and decent wine. Well, the owners have decided to branch out and their first new opening is The Dyke Pub & Kitchen in Prestonville. And here is where a tough decision has to be taken. You’ve built a business, through the application of blood, sweat and tears; you’ve learnt a vast amount from your mistakes, your trials, and hopefully your customers. Do you replicate exactly the same décor, menu and operation elsewhere (becoming an effective franchise and possibly missing the point of being a real community pub and veering towards McPub or ‘spoons territory) or do you experiment a bit and try to tailor the new business to its location and catchment?
free range as possible, for a good price in a relaxed environment. Sounds good, and a lot better than some of the appalling places that have assumed the gastro description but turn out the same old stodge, with a pretty squeeze-bottle application of Bisto jus. The special thing about The Dyke’s menu is that as well as the ‘Pub Classics’ carried over from the menu at The Connaught, it has a Tuscan leaning Italian menu that changes daily, and comprises a selection of starters or light bites and hearty mains. It reads well – on our visit there were five dishes in each category, and most would have been welcomed by the denizens of Montalcino and Pienza. We start with bread and dips – the bread is indeed authentically Tuscan and so a bit disappointing as Tuscans actually mostly eat a fairly bland spongy white, which while not Mothers Pride, lacks the punch of the open-textured hard crust loaves that Gray and Rogers have taught us to love. The three bowls of dips are a rich, oily, garlicky aubergine caviar; a tangy black olive tapenade; and a fresh and grassy rocket pesto. All are superb, especially the purea di melanzane, and to be honest, you do need a plain bread with such powerful tastes. The wines are all bought from Bibendum, which allows a very classy list to be created, and a glass of Ceppaiano Alle Viole (£6.20) from the Tuscan coast is very satisfying, the violet aroma giving way to a meaty, spicy palate. We share three starters (purely for your reading pleasure, there’s no gluttony here): firstly, Newhaven mackerel lightly seared and flavoured with a hint of smoked paprika on a beetroot carpaccio (since the Venetian painter Carpaccio was famous for his reds, there is no sin in the use of the term that is more correctly applied to raw beef), with a mizuna salad and horseradish dressing. here is a great deal currently being written in the newspapers and the trade press about the death of the pub – high prices, poor service, bad food, the smoking ban, and cultural changes to drinking and so on.

The Dyke, pleasingly, is a bit of both. A run-down dirty boozer has been stripped back to its Victorian-style windows and mirrors, opened up to an airy and well-lit space, and given a stylish and unobtrusive makeover. There is a lot of bare wood, solid and comfy furniture (including some cool upholstery on the chairs in the dining room) and a moderate level of objects (I was particularly taken with the collection of antlers). There is an open fire cheerfully burning away (it never ceases to amaze me how popular a feature this is for pub customers) and a fantastic giant blackboard that details the entire wine list. There is also a small, quiet garden, still feeling a bit new, that will be a vote winner in warmer weather. Sitting for a brief chat with manager Jonny (who has worked at some top places in London and recently played a senior role in Toptable.com, so knows his stuff), and supping a reasonable pint of Harvey’s, I venture to ask whether the Dyke is a Gastropub. I am told ‘no’, in quite vehement terms. The ethos is to serve good food that is as organic, local and NOVEMBER 2010

Both beets and mackerel are the epitome of local and seasonal, and the ďŹ nished dish is excellent (I understand it was created on the day by Neil, the sous chef who was running the kitchen – as a reviewer, I do enjoy eating when the head chef is away. If the team are skilled and trained, you can’t always see the difference, which is the mark of a great kitchen).
some kidney beans and big black beasts of olives. In the middle is a spoonful of intensely garlic and herb-avoured rich butter (or possibly light cream cheese – it didn’t last long enough to be certain) that is melting into the stew. This is an excellent dish, that is a pleasure to eat and we clean the bowl. The kitchen can be proud of this reinvention.
Spinach and ricotta ravioli are big handmade pockets, with spot-on pasta on al dente chard with best quality parmesan shavings and a basil and chilli butter. The contrasting textures between pasta and its creamy ďŹ lling, and the chard stems and tomato dice are very well judged.
Surprisingly, we can’t manage dessert, but the short selection are all made in house, and include a chocolate torte, a plum and almond cake with cream, and an acceptable cheeseboard (for me there should be more Sussex cheeses or go all Italian – Somerset Brie doesn’t ďŹ t).
Calves liver is a little more done than the Tuscans and I would like, but has a tasty crust as a consequence. Accompanied by chunky unsmoked bacon lardons and spinach and plenty of parsley lightly wilted in the heat of the meats. Good enough with bread for a lunch dish.
Coffee is very good (doppio at ÂŁ2.20) from a Brighton-based roaster and of course there is Tuscany’s own Tuaca available – Brighton’s liqueur obsession – from Livorno. I gave the facilities the ‘Damian’s Mum certiďŹ cate of approval’ as the tiled gents was immaculate. Not many pubs get this right.
Service is exactly that; smiles aplenty, water brought without needing to ask (extra points scored for this), unfussy, and welcoming. Filling up rapidly, we stick to two mains – another pasta dish, and a bean stew. The pasta is a linguine with mussels – proper European mussels, plump and ďŹ rm and succulent, not the vile antipodean monstrosities that infest pub menus. These are cozze that my Tuscan Zio Beppe would have loved.
Since our visit, the menu has continued to grow and develop, and looking at The Dyke’s website today, I would say has even got better. This is a pub that has started very well and will grow and improve.
The pasta is cooked just right and sauced correctly, dressed with tomatoes and garlic and herbs, not swamped. On top are some marinated anchovy ďŹ llets and a clump of rocket that is peppery enough to be a avouring herb instead of a gratuitous garnish. Proper Alici marinate are so much better than brown salty tinned slug ďŹ llets. The Dyke kitchen is doing pasta the right way. I bet if they made a carbonara, it would only have egg yolks and pancetta as the spaghetti dressing. Bean stew is another blighted pub dish, and we’ve ordered to see if it can be redeemed. And we are very happy – billed as aubergine and cannellini beans, it is also full of tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, onions and celery (all tasting cleanly of themselves as if cooked separately like a ratatouille), and
I understand that the next project from this team is a pizzeria in a pub in Portslade – this has been tried before although nobody has ever delivered real Italian pizzas consistently in a public house. Could be this time it will work? With Neil’s mackerel and the bean stew as ďŹ rm favourites, I can say with conďŹ dence, I like The Dyke. 62

ur first stop is at Graze Restaurant, Hove, to meet Head Chef Gethin Russell-Jones for his suggestions on what to cook and how.
What should we be looking out for when shopping to cook in November? I love Autumn for cooking, there’s so much great stuff coming into season. All the game, wild mushrooms, squashes and root vegetables, plus white truffles if you’re feeling flush. What I’ve been enjoying most down here on the South Coast, though, is the fish and shellfish. Gurnard and grey mullet are beautiful right now, and cheap, as are squid, crab, oysters and red mullet. There’s too much to mention here, to be honest. And how will you be using those here at Graze? I’m doing a crab and sweetcorn chowder with basmati foam and coriander oil at the moment. I think sweetcorn, also in season now, works very well with crab and the basmati foam – all very delicate flavours. Also, we serve a wild rabbit and smoked eel terrine with crab apple chutney, and a mallard dish where we smoke the breast and serve it with cumin gnocchi, cumin caramel veloûté and confit pumpkin, so I’m using a fair bit of game too.

What wine would go well with the dish? In the restaurant we serve it with Fernando de Castilla manzanilla sherry which handles the spices well. We’d also suggest a subtly aromatic white such as a Pinot Blanc from the Alsace. graze-restaurant.co.uk NOVEMBER 2010

ext, we meet Head Chef Dougie White from Terraces Bar and Grill, Madeira Drive, to get his tips on seasonal cooking.
What should we be looking out for when shopping to cook in November? The in season vegetables include pumpkin, beetroot, parsnips and potatoes, which are all great at this time of year. Also, there’s plenty of Autumnal fruit like apples, pears, raspberries and blackberries, while game such as grouse, hare and rabbit are all readily available. And how will you be using those here at Terraces? I love making desserts and a lovely winter dessert I just put on the menu is pear plum and almond tart with fresh berries and vanilla custard. Now tell us how we might use some of the produce. Here’s a recipe (see opposite) for braised pork belly in Harvey’s, honey and thyme with crispy crackling and sweet potato and pumpkin mash, which serves four people. What wine would go well with the dish? We recommend the Palliser Estate Pencarrow Sauvignon Blanc. It’s energising and packed with tropical fruit avour and zippy crispness. the-terraces.co.uk

WE COLLAR THE FIERY CHEF GORDON RAMSAY TO FIND OUT WHAT HE'S BEEN UP TO AND TO ASK HIM FOR ONE OF HIS FANTASTIC AUTUMNAL DESSERTS

While on the hunt for Britain’s ultimate eatery, he stops at nothing to get the best results. And to make sure viewers relish the experience as much as he clearly does, Ramsay has
produced a recipe book containing the dishes he uncovered as he barked orders to top chefs throughout the land. “I discovered that we have some of the best and most diverse restaurants on our doorstep, and this is a celebration of my journey to find the UK’s Best eatery,” he explains of his new book, Ramsay’s Best Menus. “Many of the recipes are adaptations of those dishes served by local heroes.”

Rather than sticking to the traditional recipe and picture combination, Ramsay has developed a ick-book approach. Containing 52 menus and 156 recipes covering starters, main courses and desserts, the cuisine is wide-ranging, from British to Middle Eastern – and divided by season. “The rationale behind doing a sliced cookbook was to show people that they can have a lot of fun mixing up menus. If you feel like having a Mexican starter, an Italian main course and a British pudding, just do it. Shake it up a bit, try something different.â€? As a diner, Ramsay says he’d like nothing more than a gentle mixture of Bruschetta with Cavolo Nero (black-leaf kale) and Parma ham, followed by Quail with Kohlrabi (cabbage) and Butternut Squash, plus Chocolate Fondant to ďŹ nish. But fans of the show will know that despite his European choice of menu, he’s already been particularly impressed by some Indian spices of late. “Meeting the family behind the food at Prashad restaurant in Bradford was an amazing experience. They’ve worked unbelievably hard to turn it into one of the best local Indian restaurants in the country. “The vegetarian Gujarati food they serve is incredible and shows how you can pack a dish with avour without going anywhere near meat; I was extremely impressed by them.â€? After ďŹ lming the TV series Gordon’s Great Escapes, during which he visited India, the chef says he fell in love with spicy cuisine. “Not only are the colours so vibrant but the tastes pack such a punch. How the various regional cuisines have evolved so differently within the same country, I just found fascinating.â€? He adds that his latest quest to ďŹ nd Britain’s top restaurant, chosen from nominations made by the public, has indulged his ďŹ rst love; the professional kitchen. “It’s right where the action is. I love working with incredibly dynamic people and seeing many of them develop into outstanding chefs is very exciting. Obviously cooking exceptional food that people enjoy eating is the best thing about the job, but I do just love being in the kitchen.â€? Ramsay adds that restaurateurs who don’t listen to their customers drive him nuts.
Try one of Ramsay’s bes t restaurant recipes...

Tip the pan from side to side to mix the caramel and butter together. Take care as the mixture may spit and splutter. • Add the apples and pea rs to the pan, cut side dow n. Take off the heat and leave to cool slightly. • Divide the fruit among warm plates and spoon over the caramel sauce. • Serve with a dollop of crème fraĂŽche, if you like .
“In my experience, far too many people think they know what their customers want and then are shocked when their restaurant isn’t successful, it’s simple common sense.â€? And despite these difďŹ cult times in which the economic viability of his own restaurant empire has been called into question, the chef is still positive that you can make a good living from food. “There’s still plenty of room in the industry - it’s a case of understanding the business, knowing your market and offering a ďŹ rst class experience for all diners.â€?

LAST MONTH WE MET NICHOLAS EDWARDS, THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF A NEW HEDGE FUND MANAGER CALLED ALTERNATIVE ASSET MANAGEMENT, WHO TOLD US ABOUT A POSSIBLE NEW PATH TO PROFITS. IN THIS ISSUE OF SO MONEY WE DELVE A LITTLE DEEPER...
How and why did hedge funds come about in the ďŹ rst place?
Most people will probably associate the expression ‘hedge fund’ with all that is bad about the City and ďŹ nancial sector disasters of the past three years. People believe that the typical attitude of the hedge fund manager is endemic and at the heart of the greed and fear on which the City thrives; and furthermore most probably at the very heart of the ďŹ nancial crisis that is holding back growth in the Western world! However, the reality is different; far from this commonly held view is the fact that hedge funds were originally designed to provide a hedge against portfolio risk; a mechanism to de-risk underlying exposure. Most City professionals would point to the fund created in 1949 by the sociologist, author, and ďŹ nancial journalist Alfred Winslow Jones as the ďŹ rst hedge fund with the speciďŹ c purpose of de-risking a portfolio. Jones believed that price movements of an individual asset could be seen as having a component due to the overall
market and a component due to the performance of the asset itself. To neutralise the effect of overall market movement, he balanced his portfolio by buying assets whose price he expected to be stronger than the market and selling short assets he expected to be weaker than the market. He saw that price movements due to the overall market would be cancelled out, because, if the overall market rose, the loss on shorted assets would be cancelled by the additional gain on assets bought and vice-versa. Because the effect is to ‘hedge’ that part of the risk due to overall market movements, this became known as a hedge fund.
Technically a hedge fund is an investment fund open to qualifying investors (the regulations are strict here) that undertakes a broader range of investment and trading activities than the more traditional long-only investment funds. Today fees and charges are usually higher predominantly due to the greater concentration of effort required to achieve the higher returns that are expected.

The most commonly used strategies include short selling and the use of derivatives, however, the term ‘hedge fund’ has also come to be applied to certain funds that, as well as (or instead of) hedging certain risks, use short selling and other ‘hedging’ methods as a trading strategy to generate a return on the capital put at risk. This is a very specialised profession. Many hedge fund managers employ speculative investment opportunities to create proďŹ ts and some engineer complex mechanisms to wrap around traditional portfolio investments to add value (proďŹ ts) over and above the performance of the underlying assets. This is known as adding ‘alpha’ (the returns in excess of the underlying asset).
W
With these higher returns comes of course a higher level of risk! Every hedge fund has its own unique investment strategy that determines the type of investments and the methods of investment it undertakes and this in turn is a reection of the risks that are taken. Hedge funds, as an asset class can, and often do, invest in a broad range of investments including shares, market indeces, derivatives, debt and commodities.

How important are hedge funds to the market place today? The ever growing presence of hedge funds in today’s global financial markets means that we are all exposed in one way or another to the industry. It may be that a portfolio has no direct exposure to a hedge fund but due to the fact that the order flow from hedge funds now makes up a significant percentage of daily total market turnover (considerably in excess of 40% - depending on which funds are classified as ‘hedge funds’!), there is every chance that hedge funds will have a direct or indirect effect on portfolio returns.
Hedge funds have occasionally come in for criticism. JustiďŹ ed or not? Without question, yes. Criticism is justiďŹ ed as there are many, many examples of greedy hedge fund managers who have clearly abused the faith and trust which has been placed in them. The lack of regulation and therefore transparency in the industry has tempted some unscrupulous traders and managers to gamble with investors’ money in the belief that they will make huge proďŹ ts and thus huge performance fees. The sad reality is that all too often the risks have not been analysed carefully enough and with the use of leverage it doesn’t take very long to build huge book losses. For this reason we have invested huge resources into strategy analysis and quantifying risk. Our business is all about risk. We base every investment decision and take every trading position based upon how we intend to manage the risk once we are in the trade. This is a material difference from the way
in which we traded prior to 2008. The market has changed and so must investors.
How risky is it putting money into hedge funds? There can be no question that most hedge funds should come with a strong health warning! Few hedge funds are able to generate above market returns without taking above market risk. If investors expect to receive a high return they must accept that they must take a greater responsibility towards risk. Usually the hedge fund manager will do his job to the best of his ability and it is down to the investor to do his homework as to how much risk he may wish to take. To be blunt, if people don’t want to take any risk, they should not invest in hedge funds.
Who would be an ideal hedge fund investor? We believe that the ideal investor is one who is looking to achieve above average returns at the fringes of their portfolio. Notwithstanding the legal restrictions on who we can market to (non-qualifying investors should probably avoid hedge funds) there is no question that only those who can reasonably afford to lose a proportion of their investment, should look to hedge funds. (Maybe even a signiďŹ cant proportion at times of maximum stress in ďŹ nancial markets). We court high net worth and family ofďŹ ce investors as well as smaller institutions because they typically have a greater understanding of the risks involved. Whilst we consider the analysis of risk to be pre-requisite in what we do, ultimately it is the responsibility of the investor to ensure that they do not take on more risk than they should. Naturally professional investors are well informed and able to make important investment decisions for themselves; but those without sufďŹ cient current relevant experience in investing in high risk funds and strategies should either resist the temptation or at the very least seek professional advice.
W
The typical net asset value of a hedge fund can run into many billions of pounds but often gross assets of a fund will be substantially higher due to the extensive use of leverage (where the fund is able to borrow against the value of the net assets in order to further increase exposure). The value of all hedge funds is thought to be in excess of $2.5trillion and they dominate certain specialty markets such as trading within derivatives with high-yield ratings and distressed debt, but there are many other strategies employed by a huge variety of highly skilled traders and managers. At Alternative Asset Management we specialise in a number of different strategies including market futures, stock options and global currencies. Each strategy is carefully managed by professionals ‘topdown’ to complement the vital ‘bottom-up’ skill and experience of the traders. Generating pure alpha (absolute returns) with no correlation to any underlying asset class or benchmark, is rare and we guard our know-how jealously. We are not unique but most of our serious competition work discretely within the big global investment banks and hedge funds behind the scenes.

The problem for us is that investors are always looking to take that extra step towards achieving proďŹ t and with our signiďŹ cant outperformance over the past 20 months or so we see a lot of investors who want to ďŹ nd out more. We can talk to some but not all! When in fund raising mode, we have learned to expect this sort of frustration.
Your own fund manager, Alternative Asset Management or A2ML, was set up in 2004. How has your fund management style developed since this time? We have explored many alternative and different investment strategies over the years. We started out by trading major market indeces using only futures; FTSE, DAX, S&P, Eurostoxx etc. We liked the liquidity offered by the major markets and we found that focusing on only a small number of underlying asset classes helped us to extract alpha on a consistent basis. This yielded returns of several hundred per cent per annum in the early years, however, we were always cognisant that the risks being taken were greater than traditional investors would tolerate and we invested heavily in the development of purely systematic trading systems employing powerful algorithms. Such systems are out there and whilst we enjoyed some success we felt that our core skills were better employed in the development of our traditional discretionary trading strategies but with an increased focus on improving the risk proďŹ le. It was after the early tremors that rippled through the global ďŹ nancial markets in mid 2008 that we began to focus on reducing risk whilst seeking to maintain performance. Our research and testing procedures encouraged us to try several different risk control measures, however, most merely reduced our performance in proportion to the lower risk. It was not until early 2009 that we found the right balance of risk control and signiďŹ cant performance; which we have enjoyed over the past 20 months.
What risk measures did you put in place and why? As I have indicated, it is crucial to get the right balance when enforcing risk controls. Too many controls and your traders don’t have any room to manoeuvre, whereas too few risk controls and you allow market exposure to build thus increasing risk. We put four simple but effective core risk controls in place: Q Single market exposure (to be focused and identify pure ‘alpha’)
“IT WAS AFTER THE EARLY TREMORS THAT RIPPLED THROUGH THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL MARKETS IN MID 2008 THAT WE BEGAN TO FOCUS ON REDUCING RISK WHILST SEEKING TO MAINTAIN PERFORMANCE
Q Balanced exposure (between long and short positions) Q Maximum position sizing (to avoid becoming over-exposed) Q Non compounding of proďŹ ts (to de-risk our portfolio over time) These risk controls may seem rather elementary when taken individually, but taken together they act as a powerful risk ďŹ lter and path to signiďŹ cant outperformance. The trick is to give the traders enough room to let their positions ‘breathe’ with the market, without putting too many constraints on their ability to generate proďŹ t.
How has A2ML performed? W
We are perhaps fortunate to have enjoyed a period of signiďŹ cant outperformance since early 2009. Our trading strategies have

enjoyed a range of positive performance but our agship Megalio Vision Fund strategy has achieve over +270% net over this period. Our proprietary assets under management have been very small and this may have helped us to be nimble and enjoy success where some of the larger fund managers were constrained by size and capacity issues; however, we have carefully analysed the optimum assets that we can manage whilst targeting +100% per annum for our investors. Over the past 20 months we have seen an annualised return of over +165% net of fees and charges. We would like to think that we can continue with this performance and we are operationally geared towards this but the reality is that we do not know in advance. You can’t change the past, but you can inuence the future. We are certainly intent on inuencing our future!
What might future investors expect from A2ML? Our investors can expect us to continue to take a calculated approach to risk. They can expect us to take enough risk to be able to achieve our returns target. Anything less would be a betrayal of our core principles and investment objectives. Perhaps the right question is what investors might expect us to do when we have reached capacity in our trading strategies? Capacity is an issue that we focus on. We will only accept new assets that we can manage without any capacity constraints. We certainly have the option to de-risk our strategies and scale up capacity but the cost will almost certainly be a diminution of returns. This may prove to be very acceptable
to some investors but in the short term we remain committed to maintain a balance between risk and reward and we will stick to our investment strategies and objectives to achieve signiďŹ cant outperformance or absolute alpha for our investors.
Why pick A2ML over any other hedge fund out there? If ‘to be big is to be beautiful’ then ‘to be small is to be nimble’! Our investors will choose to invest with us because of our ability to be nimble; to move in and out of trades before the market is even aware that we have been active. Our no nonsense approach to dealing with risk up front in order to achieve returns will attract some but for those who have no appetite for risk we also offer strategies with signiďŹ cantly lower risk; they will, however, have to accept the quid pro quo that returns may lower than our agship strategies. Positive alpha performance will naturally always be our core objective on behalf of all our investors. As for why investors might wish to invest in a hedge fund at all? ‌If they want superior returns they will have to accept higher risk. If an investment looks too good to be true, with no risk, it probably is! 62 Nicholas Edwards is CEO of the Alternative Asset Management group of companies providing specialist hedge fund management services, based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A LAP RECORD TO GET THE ATTENTION OF THE PERFORMANCE CAR WORLD AND FERRARI’S 599 GTO HAS EXPLODED ON TO THE SCENE WITH A COUPLE OF THEM. AS THE COUNTRY’S LEADING BORES SET ABOUT COMMITTING ITS SPECIFICATIONS TO MEMORY, THE GTO HAD ALREADY SOLD OUT WORDS MATT JOY

he going rate for ownership of the fastest road-going Ferrari is ÂŁ285,000. It’s the car with the lap record for the Italian ďŹ rm’s Fiorano test track and the model which, in heavily modiďŹ ed 599XX guise and on slick tyres, broke the fabled seven-minute barrier for a lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
If the 599 GTO achieves the legendary status Ferrari appears to have mapped out for it, 599 lucky owners will have got themselves a bargain.
The standard 599 GTB Fiorano provided the basis for the insane 599XX track car and some of that model’s extensive engine, aerodynamic and weight-saving modiďŹ cations appear in road-legal form on the 599 GTO. The 5,999cc V12 engine from which the model takes its name develops 670bhp at 8,250rpm for a speciďŹ c output of 112bhp per litre. Maximum torque of 620Nm is delivered at 6,500rpm and sent to the rear wheels via Ferrari’s F1 automated manual gearbox which is capable of performing gear changes in just 60 milliseconds. Against the clock, the GTO will pass 60mph in 3.4s before surging on to a 208mph maximum. Helping drivers deploy the awesome performance potential of the GTO is an array of electronic systems. The SCM2 suspension control system continuously adjusts the ďŹ rmness of the car’s dampers according to the road surface and the settings chosen through the driver control interface.
Classic examples include the 250 GTO of 1962 and the 288 GTO of the 1980s, the car often credited with inventing the modern supercar concept. It all gives the 599 GTO a lot to live up to.
Ferrari’s F1-Trac stability control technology works to maximise performance in line with the levels of available grip, helping drivers get the power on earlier and harder as the car roars out of a corner.
W
The GTO or ‘Gran Turismo Omologata’ badge is not one that Ferrari bestows lightly. It’s reserved for super-focused versions of its standard products, cars produced to comply with the homologation regulations of the motorsport series which demand that road-legal versions of race cars must be available before they can compete.

Facts at a glance: Price: Initially £285,000 Engine: 6-litre petrol V12 Output: 670bhp Performance: Max speed 208mph, 0-62 3.4 seconds
Drivers can control the parameters of the 599 GTO’s various systems by selecting Low Grip, Sport or Race modes. There’s also a CT-OFF setting that deactivates the traction control functionality but retains stability control, while the CST-OFF function is for talented or foolhardy individuals who want to explore the limits of the 599 GTO without any electronic intervention. There’s a 100kg weight saving made on the 599 GTO compared to the 599 GTB Fiorano. It’s achieved through the use of advanced materials, the redesign of specific parts and some all-new high-tech components. Thinner aluminium and glass, forged aluminium wheel rims, carbon fibre race seats and carbon-ceramic brakes all make their contribution to the low kerb weight and, ultimately, to the car’s superior agility. The vents and spoilers that define the surface of the 599 GTO help give it double the downforce force of the GTB Fiorano and a similar quantity of extra visual aggression. At the same time, the aerodynamic design funnels air through the vehicle, providing the immense cooling power that the engine and brakes need to operate efficiently.
With 670bhp and the Ferrari GTO badge, the 599 GTO was never going to be an affordable option or anything less than highly exclusive. Only 599 cars were scheduled to be built and they were sold within weeks of the car being unveiled and displayed to a select group of Ferrari customers. Almost all of the features are included in the £285,000 asking price including the Virtual Race Engineer which gives real time updates on the status of the car and its performance. One option is a leather and Alcantara covering for the seats and if you’re spending close to £300,000 anyway, well, why not? Running costs are likely to be fairly astronomical by the standards of ordinary motorists but 599 GTO buyers won’t care. A car as special as this one with this potential to appreciate in value makes the cost of fuel and parts almost an irrelevance. Needless to say, kerbing an alloy wheel or dinging the front splitter on a speed hump is not something you’d want to make a habit of. For the record, official fuel economy is 16mpg and emissions are 411g/km.
The classic front/mid-engined layout gives the car a vast bonnet and a cabin drawn back over its powerful rear haunches. It’s the classic shape of the 599 but the GTO version is clearly something altogether more extreme.
When the 599 GTO took the lap record for Ferrari’s Fiorano test track from the Enzo hypercar and borrowed cutting edge technology from the 599XX track model that broke the seven minute barrier at the Nurburgring, it guaranteed its place in automotive folklore.
The cabin is as pared back as expected in a car as intently focused on the job of going as quickly as this one but Ferrari is proud of the quality feel it’s managed to instill. There’s plenty of exposed aluminium and carbon fibre with the seats finished in fabric and Alcantara. The F1 gearbox console was completely redesigned for this car, bringing the controls within even easier reach.
Ferrari has even higher hopes for the car which were highlighted by giving it the evocative GTO moniker seen on some of the finest Ferraris of all time. With 670bhp giving rise to 200mph performance, advanced aerodynamics, weight saving measures and the latest electronic driver aids, the 599 GTO appears to have future classic written all over it. 62

5RRP WR IN 1988 NICOLA MCHALE SET UP VI INTERNATIONAL, A COMPANY SPECIALISING IN UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF SENIOR BUSINESS PEOPLE. MORE RECENTLY, IN A BID TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES GROW AND FLOURISH, SHE LAUNCHED HOVE-BASED ONE CHURCH ROAD, OFFERING STYLISH AND FLEXIBLE BOUTIQUE OFFICE SPACE
How did the idea of One Church Road come about? It came from not being able to ďŹ nd anywhere comfortable in the City to have an ofďŹ ce which represented our brand – and I wanted to create a place where it felt like I was working from home, or from a boutique hotel, not a sterile environment. I was after a superb environment to work in because with VI International I am constantly working out of hotels and conference centres. The idea was to set up a space for small to medium size businesses to have a more prestigious address, with boutique style and feel. Who are the current clients? Individuals and small businesses mostly; discerning professionals looking for a move from home to chic ofďŹ ces. These people are often after a discreet, boutique environment in which to mix with like-minded people. Flexibility is vital for small businesses, so we offer small contracts from six months to a year in our four ofďŹ ces [three small and one large] and meeting space. Is entrepreneurialism in the blood? Yes, I’d say so. I was born and educated in Kent and my father was certainly of entrepreneurial spirit, he worked his way up after the war from a carpenter to having his own very successful building company. I went off to London to study at the age of 18 and was lucky enough to be studying on Bond Street in the West End. My career started in the prestigious high end beauty industry working with companies like EsteĂŠ Lauder and Lancome. Then I continued to study and learn, became a mother
and found that the only way I could have it all was to set up my own business. So I set up VI International in 1988 specialising in sales, leadership and impact coaching to global organisations. What’s on the cards for you in the future? Well, currently One Church Road is fully occupied, however we’re looking to expand and provide limited memberships. This will mean businesses can use our prestigious postal address and hire our meeting room/hot desk and use the reception area, adding another element of exibility to their businesses. We may look for other ofďŹ ces to follow the model of One Church Road, but I’ll need to ďŹ nd more addresses that start with ‘One’ to maintain the brand! We’ll perhaps look at expanding in Manchester as VI International has business up there and it’s where my business partner and daughter, Hannah, is located. How did Brighton become home? Being born in Kent, as a teenager we used to come down here a lot, which was just fantastic, I loved it. Then after London, I moved away to Buckinghamshire. I then worked with American Express and I kept coming back here on business. I just love the vibrancy and the feeling of freedom, plus it’s close to the London and major airports, so I moved down around nine years ago. It’s just a superb place to live and work. How would you describe yourself as a business person? I’m passionate about business and working to help people to achieve their best, in a creative way. I know how important it is to perform at your best and make the most of yourself. I am very creative so I am always thinking of new ideas. Professionally, working with large corporations has taught me how a small business should operate to be successful and how vital it is to work in a place that enables you to be at your most creative and where you feel very comfortable – that’s why I created One Church Road. Hair-Raising Success The prolific growth of Brighton-based brand Electric Hairdressing continues this Winter, as co-owner and creative director Mark Woolley launches - The Electric Collection. Recently named Director of the Year at the 12th Annual British Hairdressing Business Awards, Mark and his Electric team have developed what they consider to be a range of achievable feminine looks for the modern woman. Their aim being to inspire and capture the imagination of the fashion-conscious across Brighton and Hove, and beyond. The new collection, from the Ship Street Enterprise, employs luminous colours and versatility to deliver a distinctive style that embodies the philosophy of its creator. A philosophy which has driven dramatic growth for the brand over the last 12 months, resulting in a 25% increase in group turnover.
Following the increased turnover, the brand has extended its reach to include the launch of a central London salon and international product range, as well as the development of a governmentrecognised training and qualification academy. The artistic strength of the Electric team has also been emphasised by the international recognition of its creative photographic studio and appointment as international Brand Ambassador for Denman International. No mean feat in the space of 365 days. The Business Director’s is the culmination of determined team effort and something that Mark describes as “one of the biggest accolades” of his career. Organic SPAvaganza There’s nothing quite like being pampered from head to toe and having your every whim taken care of. And never more so than in the chaotic run up to Christmas when you’re being pulled in every direction. Since opening its doors in July, the Uniquely Organic EcoSpa has gone from strength to strength in providing a haven of calm from the madness of our everyday lives. And now, to celebrate their first Christmas in Hove, the EcoSpa team are inviting you to join them at a festive pamper party in aid of the Martlet’s Hospice. Kirsty Taylor is the founder of Uniquely Organic, and the drive behind the completely ethical beauty and spa experience. Aiming to relax, rejuvenate and educate, Kirsty and her dedicated

Continuing in this vein, on Wednesday 1st December, The EcoSpa team will be on hand with mince pies, mulled wine and a range of fantastic organic taster treatments including file and varnish for fingers and toes, reflexology, Indian head massage, organic makeovers and hair styling to keep your body and mind in top condition over the winter months.
Vege-tables Excellent vegetarian cuisine and Brighton’s open-minded population seem to go hand-in-hand. Indeed every person who’s eaten at Terre à Terre reinforces the message that “no meat” does not mean “no good.” And so, the vegetarian foodie revolution continues! Named as one of the runners-up in the Best Restaurant category of the 2010 Sunday Observer Food Monthly Awards, something voted for by the public, Terre a Terre has once again proven it deserves its high reputation. Since its inception, the restaurant and its dedicated staff have made huge strides in gaining popular acceptance of vegetarian cuisine. This most recent recognition follows success earlier in the year when it was named Best Restaurant in Brighton and Hove at the Foodie Awards. In 2008, Terre à Terre was awarded the Best for Vegetarian accolade at the Observer Food Awards to go with its prestigious AA Two Rosettes and Michelin Bib Gourmand awards. A good year for vegetarian cookery is quickly becoming a great year for those actually responsible for meat-free innovation. The growing strength of Terre à Terre’s culinary excellence at a national level not only helps to confirm the public’s continuing search for good, wholesome food, but also demonstrates the power of Brighton’s community to support a local business over 17 years of pursuing a passion. Long may it continue. To place a reservation at Terre à Terre, visit terreaterre.co.uk or ring 01273 729051
Tickets cost £3, including free entry into the prize draw and all food and beverages. Each taster treatment is £5. Advanced booking is recommended, call 01273 726 973 or email info@uoecospa.com NOVEMBER 2010

righton and Hove is a rich tapestry of traditional seaside, period architecture and winding streets. It won’t come as much of a surprise then, to learn that the City is in huge demand as a TV and ďŹ lm set. From TV drama series to Hollywood blockbusters, Brighton and the surrounding areas have featured in some of our best-loved movies. The question is: did you recognise the City when it appeared on the big (or small) screen? In the Lanes Captured on ďŹ lm in the original Brighton Rock (1947) and the Channel 4 drama series Sugar Rush, The Lanes and North Laine are instantly identiďŹ able. Classically Brighton, the old shopping hub is the perfect way to showcase the hustle and bustle of the City. On the Beach The 1979 ďŹ lm Quadrophenia will always be intrinsically linked to the City. Just off Little East Street is a small lane now known as ‘Quadrophenia Alley’. It was through this passage that the two lovers of the movie escaped from the police. The violent stand off, that is the culmination of the ďŹ lm, sees 3,000 Mods and Rockers tear through the streets and on to the seafront, causing damage and devastation as they go. Keep your eye out too, for the forthcoming remake of Brighton Rock. Filming has been taking place all over the City, with numerous scenes being ďŹ lmed on the beach.

On the Piers One of the City’s most recognisable locations, Brighton Pier, has featured in several major movies. From the recent Woody Allen ďŹ lm Cassandra’s Dream (starring none other than this month’s cover celeb Ewan McGregor) to the 1999 remake of The End of the Affair and the Bob Hoskins crime thriller Mona Lisa, the Pier has illuminated the screen. Its best role, however, is probably in the original Brighton Rock, serving as the location for the character Kolly Kibber’s death. The West Pier, now just a burnt shell, was a hugely popular site in the 1960s and 70s. Oh! What a Lovely War was ďŹ lmed there before the land end collapsed. Both Carry on at your Convenience and Carry on Girls saw seaside trips to the Pier. Down the Drive Madeira Drive could be Brighton’s most popular ďŹ lm location. Carry on Girls featured a view down the road, complete with a ag pole ying a pair of knickers. The 2004 romance Wimbledon starring Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst saw the lead characters outwit the media, escaping to Brighton. Circus, Genevieve and End of the Affair also shot scenes on this stretch of the sea front. In the Pavilion The Royal Pavilion was the ideal spot for Sir Ian McKellan to ďŹ lm the most recent interpretation of Shakespeare’s Richard III. While the 1970 Barbara Streisand vehicle On a Clear Day You Can See Forever shows scenes at the Royal Palace. It also featured in the original Brighton Rock and End of the Affair. And those cameras are today still rolling...
