MRO IT is about the latest technologies and solutions leveraging value from the whole fleet, all the time The first flight of the Boeing 737 MAX in 2017 will mark a significant aviation milestone. First flown in 1967, this is no ‘legacy’ aircraft: the 737 MAX will illustrate that new technology efficiency and established reliable success are far from mutually exclusive ideas. I mention this because ability to span several generations of technological enhancement matters in commercial aviation as it is and as it is likely to become. Given the high cost of development, it is likely that future new designs will need to adapt to changing requirements and possibilities over a production cycle spanning many decades. Also, given the purchase price of new aircraft, owners (airlines and lessors) will want to apply whatever technologies and processes can best ensure a long and productive life for their investment. Most of these technologies and processes will be Aircraft IT or use IT for their effectiveness. There is an article in this issue from an airline using an engineering upgrade requirement to leverage a whole lot more IT capability which will serve for many years to come. There’s also an article on the latest information exchange standards, making documentation more useful and easier to use… and, at the same time, better able to manage engineering, technology and IT changes emerging in future years. eMan Provider AviIT Expands Business Development Team ON 5 February 2014, AviIT Ltd announced that Ian Cooke has joined its eMan Business Development Team. Ian brings many years of technical sales experience and has most recently been working with aircraft operators across the globe to enhance their passenger cabin experience. In his new role, Ian will focus on ensuring that the eMan document management and distribution solution is presented to the widest possible market. “We significantly expanded our eMan development activities over the last 18 months to increase both its functionality and general market appeal. AVIATION Island of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, chose RAAS as its primary aviation maintenance and engineering system solution in support of provision of CAMO services to its airline customers, it was announced at the end of November 2013. Aviation Island is an aviation consultation services company that, among other things, provides contract EASA Continuing Airworthiness Maintenance Organization (CAMO) management services to a number of its airline customers. Highly experienced aviation maintenance systems solution users, Aviation Island key personnel sought-out an aviation maintenance management system product that would not only provide best-in-class inspection program management facilities but also an application deployment model and pricing scheme that would scale with their business and related customer demand. Aviation Island plan to employ RAAS to support CAMO services for airline customers operating narrow-body and regional aircraft types. Aviation Island Managing Director, Kico Cerdo, explained, “RAAS was found to have all tools required to perform the airworthiness control of commercial aircraft and a clear spirit of continuously improving the user experience. We trust that RAAS will become one of the references in the crowded maintenance software market.” Aviation InterTec Services Director of Operations, Eric Hansen, added, “Kico and the team at Aviation Island have taken us in a new and exciting direction, and through continued partnership we expect to break new ground in the CAMO services provision model”.
NAV CANADA CHOOSES RAAS
AT the beginning of December 2013, shortly after the Aviation Island announcement, it was also announced that Canadian federal airspace regulatory agency Navigation Canada had chosen RAAS as its preferred aviation maintenance and engineering system solution, in support of its specialized fleet of CRJ and DHC8 aircraft. Facing the increasing challenges of providing proof of compliance while supporting a robust continuing airworthiness program, Nav Canada undertook the search for a suitable replacement aviation maintenance and engineering system with a feature set diverse enough to satisfy Nav Canada’s unique requirements. After considering a range of competing products RAAS was chosen not only for its broad array of functions but also because of its very modern hosted cloud application delivery model, which ensures quick system
implementation as well as easy distribution of the system solution across the primary enterprise while also providing access to contract third-party maintenance providers. Nav Canada PRM Paul Wood commented, “AIS approach to development of hosted cloud solutions for the enterprise aviation operation is in-line with both our functional and operational requirements. After comparing a range of systems our decision to proceed with RAAS became obvious”.
ACAS EXTENDS RAAS USE
AVIATION InterTec Services customer Atlantic Coast Aircraft Services (ACAS) has chosen RAAS for deployment of paperless procedures within their maintenance organization. Following the early December 2013 announcement, ACAS will take advantage of existing RAAS features that enable paperless operation including work assignment, electronic signature and maintenance release to the job, job-task or job-task-step level. Additionally, ACAS, key in trial testing the RAAS EFB/ EML iPad app, will employ the app to facilitate electronic maintenance logs on the aircraft, including defect reporting, defect closure, defect deferral and O&M procedure sign off. Bill Yeager, ACAS Chief Operating Officer, commented, “ACAS selected RAAS system due to its modern and extensible technology. RAAS was the only system which offered the flexibility necessary to allow ACAS to pursue a completely paperless maintenance documentation infrastructure”. Aviation InterTec Services Director of Operations, Eric Hansen, said, “Over the past one and a half years ACAS have helped to prove many of our paperless processes as well as worked with us to expand paperless capability. The decision to pursue formal FAA approval of paperless procedures as well as the electronic maintenance log (EML) iPad app in the cockpit suggests trust in AIS delivery capacity”.
AIS EXPANDS LABOR TRACKING FACILITIES FOR RAAS
FOR labor data capture on the production-floor, AIS announced in early February 2014 that it has improved data collection facilities to offer a specialized web based user interface that allows scan-in and scan-out data collection from either dedicated shop-floor scan stations, tablets or user smart phones. Activation of this utility not only empowers personnel to record their own labor into RAAS but also exposes a set of production analysis features that are able to evaluate and raise the alarm on labor burn rates and budgetary constraints.

BOEING AND NORWEGIAN AIR SHUTTLE TO DEPLOY MAINTENANCE APPLICATIONS FOR IPAD
BOEING announced in mid-December 2013 that Norwegian Air Shuttle has signed an agreement to implement Boeing’s new suite of mobile maintenance applications to enhance productivity and efficiency in Norwegian’s line maintenance operations. With these applications available on iPad devices, Norwegian maintenance technicians will have real-time, mobile access to technical manuals, part numbers and parts inventory availability, maintenance history and other information needed to support time-critical maintenance tasks. Two-way collaboration capabilities will also enable Norwegian technicians to rapidly share documents, photos and other relevant information needed in maintenance troubleshooting to support operations decisions and improve maintenance turn times. “Norwegian clearly recognizes the value in efficiencies gained by putting real-time information in the hands of their maintenance crews at the airplane,” said John Maggiore, director of Fleet and Maintenance Solutions, Boeing Digital Aviation.” Norwegian plans to deploy the products to support their Boeing 737 Classic and Next-Generation 737 fleet in early 2014. The applications will be integrated with Norwegian’s back-end maintenance planning system, enabling seamless access to parts inventory listings, maintenance records and other information. “These integrated iPad applications from Boeing will give our maintenance technicians instant access to critical maintenance information when they need it most, which will help us meet our customers’ high expectations for on-time performance,” said Geir Steiro, Technical Director of Norwegian’s Maintenance and Engineering division.
BOEING AND FLYDUBAI SIGN AGREEMENT FOR MOBILE MAINTENANCE SOLUTIONS
AT the MRO Middle East conference in early February 2014, Boeing announced that flydubai had signed
an agreement to implement Boeing’s suite of mobile maintenance applications. The airline will deploy Maintenance Turn Time, Toolbox Mobile Library and Toolbox Mobile Parts – solutions that provide real-time access to the information technicians need to quickly resolve maintenance issues. As a cooperative partner, flydubai worked closely with Boeing to finalize the functionality and operability of the mobile maintenance products, which will be integrated with the airline’s maintenance planning systems. “Coordinating maintenance information across the airline is essential for our current and future operations as we continue to expand our 737 fleet,” said Dave Lewis, flydubai head of engineering. “To do this effectively, our engineers require instant access to information to support faster aircraft maintenance turn times, providing a greater level of confidence that we will continue to meet our quick-turn schedules.” flydubai is positioning itself for significant fleet growth. In January, Boeing and flydubai finalized an order first announced at the Dubai Airshow for 75 737 MAX 8s, 11 additional Next-Generation 737-800s and purchase rights for 25 more MAXs, representing the largest single-aisle airplane order in the Middle East for Boeing. “Our team worked closely with flydubai to identify their specific maintenance operations challenges and discovered that the transit time involved with engineers going back and forth between the airplane and the maintenance base to retrieve information could be optimized,” said John Maggiore, director of Fleet and Maintenance Solutions, Boeing Digital Aviation. “This integrated and streamlined mobile access to information at the airplane via mobile devices will enable the maintenance and engineering teams at flydubai to accommodate the high utilization rates and tight operations schedules for the fleet.” The mobile maintenance applications provide technicians with real-time, mobile access to technical manuals, part numbers and parts inventory availability, maintenance history, and other information needed to support time-critical maintenance tasks. Two-way collaboration capabilities enable technicians to rapidly share documents, photos and other information needed to troubleshoot issues, support operations decisions and improve maintenance turn times. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate directly with Boeing to develop these solutions to support our needs in a fast-paced and rapidly changing maintenance environment,” said Ken Gile, flydubai chief operating officer. “By making these maintenance efficiency improvements, we will be better positioned to effectively manage our operations to scale more easily and accommodate our planned fleet growth.”

Commsoft rounds off a great year and opens the new year with a basket of deals for OASES COMMSOFT SIGNS OASES RENEWAL CONTRACT WITH NEXTJET OF SWEDEN
COMMSOFT was pleased to announce at the end of October 2013 that it had signed a new three-year contract for 15 concurrent users with NextJet, one of Sweden’s largest domestic airlines. To support its fleet of 10 SAAB 340 aircraft, Next Jet plans to migrate to the latest AMP version of OASES sometime during 2014 and will be making full use of Commsoft’s implementation support, also linking OASES with the PDC operations system interface. Designed to combine ease of use with a technical sophistication that allows for the full integration of all maintenance and engineering functions, Commsoft’s OASES is structured in a modular format and NextJet has selected five of the module options – Core, Airworthiness, Planning, Materials and Line Maintenance Control. Nick Godwin, MD of Commsoft, commented: “We’re delighted that NextJet has signed a new contract with us to continue, and enhance, its use of OASES. This was more than a formality and the fact that we faced genuine competition is further evidence of the real added value benefits that OASES can bring to all types of MRO operation. ” Sverre Rosmark , Director Continuing Airworthiness of NextJet noted: “We are looking forward to benefitting from the new AMP version of OASES and to working closely with Commsoft. COMMSOFT ADDS CARDIFF AVIATION TO THE GROWING LIST OF OASES USERS
LATER, towards the end of November 2013, Commsoft announced that Cardiff Aviation Limited had selected OASES to support its CAMO and MRO operations and has signed a five year, 10 concurrent users deal. Founded in 2012 by senior aviation manager and entrepreneur Mario Fulgoni and Bruce Dickinson, vocalist with rock band Iron Maiden, Cardiff Aviation is a fully-approved and certificated aviation maintenance, engineering, technical services and training group based at the St Athan-Cardiff Airport Enterprise Zone in South Wales. Cardiff Aviation’s current clients include a range of national carriers and independent airlines as well as a number of aircraft leasing companies. OASES, designed to combine ease of use with a technical sophistication that allows for the full integration of all maintenance and engineering functions, is structured in a modular format. Cardiff Aviation has opted to use Commsoft’s hosted Windows RDP environment to run the Core, Airworthiness, Planning, Production, Materials and Warranty modules. COMMSOFT’S OASES SYSTEM CHOSEN BY CROATIAN CAMO OPERATOR AVIOCATS
IN early December 2013, it was announced that Zagreb-based Avio Grupa D.O.O. (AvioCATS) had also selected OASES as the MRO IT system for its startup CAMO operation. AvioCATS will be using the OASES Core, Airworthiness and Planning modules using Commsoft’s hosted OASES environment in a three-year, five concurrent user deal. Founded by Branimir Vukovic, Alen Kauzlaric and Ratimir Cular who collectively have over 45 years’ aviation engineering management experience, AvioCATS is already using OASES to support its first airline customer, Dubaibased SAFI Airways which is fast becoming the most reputable operator in Afghanistan and has a growing fleet of Airbus A319s and A320s together with a Boeing 757-200 and 767-200. AvioCATS received its CAMO approval, ref HR.MG.034, from the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency (CCAA) in December 2013. LATER on, in mid-December 2013, Commsoft announced the addition of Nigerian airline, Arik Air, to the growing list of OASES users in a five year, 30 concurrent users deal. The airline will be using OASES to support the development of its internal CAMO capabilities and is likely to appoint an OASES-experienced third party contractor as an implementation partner to assist with training and other aspects of process development. The initial focus will be on Arik Air’s two Airbus A330-200s, but this will be expanded to incorporate the rest of the airline’s fleet, including Boeing 737-800s and 737-700s, as well as Bombardier CRJ-900s and Dash 8 Q400s. Arik Air also has ambitious plans to expand its fleet further with a number of new generation aircraft. Arik Air has selected the Core, Airworthiness, Planning, Production, Materials and Warranty modules from OASES, which will run on a standalone dual server platform. COMMSOFT RECEIVES OASES IMPLEMENTATION APPROVAL FROM MESA
MESA, the Portuguese aircraft line maintenance provider, has completed initial implementation of its OASES modules and announced the start of live operations in late December 2013. Mesa has selected the Core, Materials and Production functionality (including SFDC/WIP) modules from OASES and will be sharing the same server infrastructure as its sister company HiFly, also an OASES user. An EASA Part 145 Maintenance Organisation, Mesa has approval, PT.145.020, for Airbus A310, A319, A320, A321, A330 and A340 aircraft plus a variety of aero engines. Its main facilities are at Lisbon International Airport but the company also operates number of maintenance stations in diverse locations around the world in order to provide support for its customers wherever it is needed. 2013 was a year in which international demand for Commsoft’s Open Aviation Strategic Engineering System (OASES) continued to grow. In March, the Ukrainian charter airline, WINDROSE Airlines, signed a five year contract for the use of OASES to support its fleet of four Airbus A321 and four Airbus A320 airliners. Then July saw Falko Regional Aircraft Limited, an asset manager in the regional aircraft arena, opt for OASES to support its growing portfolio of leased aircraft. Falko began using the system immediately, within Commsoft’s hosted environment, to support its fleet of BAe146/Avro RJ aircraft. In the same month, Airclaims, an existing Commsoft client, signed a six-month contract with Hi Fly Malta to provide CAMO support – using OASES – for one of the airline’s A340-600s. Two major deals with existing Commsoft clients were agreed in September. In the first, Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, who have strong UK MoD links, signed a new 12 month, five concurrent user contract to support the planned expansion of its CAMO services. In the second deal, Blue Air AMS, the Romanian low-cost airline, signed a new five year contract for the ongoing use of OASES to maintain its fleet of Boeing 737s. As part of the deal, Commsoft’s own Bucharest-based implementation team were contracted to support Blue Air AMS in the airline’s planned migration to the latest AMP and AD/SB software. October saw Pentastar Aviation, providers of comprehensive management services for a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 configured for a luxury business shuttle service, become the launch customer for the hosted version of Commsoft’s OASES. Pentastar, were also Commsoft’s second U.S.-based

customer. And, in the same month, Commsoft signed a new three year contract with NextJet, one of Sweden’s largest domestic airlines, to support its fleet of 10 SAAB 340 aircraft. The contract also made provision for NextJet to link with the PDC operations system interface. COMMSOFT opened 2014 with a splash in early January, signing a two year, three concurrent users contract with GGAC Aviation Consultants for the use of OASES. GGAC will be using the following OASES modules: Core, Airworthiness, Planning and Materials Management. In support of providing fleet management support for a small fleet of Boeing 737 ‘classic’ and Airbus aircraft, working both with lessors and a major European airline. Nick Godwin, MD of Commsoft, commented: “GGAC will use OASES in a hosted environment to aid fleet remarketing and disposal. MAINTAINING the momentum into 2014, at the end of January, Commsoft, announced that Lithuania-based FL Technics has joined the global OASES user community having signed a five year, 20 concurrent user contract in support of the decision to start updating its existing MRO IT system. FL Technics, a global provider of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul
solutions, serves customers from across Europe, the CIS and the Asia-Pacific region. An EASA Part-145, Part-M, Part-147, Part-21 certified company, as well as a Boeing GoldCare Program partner, FL Technics currently maintains a wide range of Boeing, Airbus, ATR, Embraer, Bombardier CRJ and other types of aircraft. OASES has already been installed in a virtualized environment and an implementation team has commenced planning activities. The present contract covers use of the following OASES modules – Airworthiness, Planning and Core – which will be used initially for the Airbus A320 fleets of FL Technics’ customers. However, following the full and successful implementation of OASES, it is anticipated that the system’s use will be extended to the provision of CAMO and fleet management services for a number of other airlines in Russia, the CIS countries and beyond, including support for Boeing 737s and Bombardier CRJ-200/Challenger 850s. RAMCO Systems chalked up five new wins in the third Quarter of its 2013-14 year. ifrSKEYES strengthens its positions in the military market IFRSKEYES was delighted to announce in mid-November 2013 that the SIMMAD (Structure Intégrée de maintien en condition opérationnelle des matériels aéronautiques de la défense) has notified the renewal and the extension of the four-year full support contract with the French Ministry of Defense. The French Air Force, Navy and Army have been using AMASIS as the centerpiece of ATAMS (Aircraft Technical and Airworthiness Management System) to optimize the airworthiness of their aircraft. One part of this 20-million-euro contract consists in the onsite support for the AMASIS end users (service desk, consulting and training). The other one concerns different AMASIS evolutions and developments. Virgin Galactic goes live with ULTRAMAIN M&E and ELB THE late November 2013 go-live for Ultramain Systems, Inc. Swiss-AS has announced the recent go-live of Lufthansa Flight Training with AMOS. The cut-over from the legacy system was conducted successfully in mid-November 2013 at the four locations Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich and Vienna. The training provider is now maintaining about 40 Full Motion Simulators plus 10 FPT in AMOS.
LUFTHANSA CITYLINE TAKES OFF WITH AMOS
AMOS was also chosen by another member of the Lufthansa Group in late November 2013 with the signing of the contract between Lufthansa CityLine and Swiss AviationSoftware (Swiss-AS) to set AMOS as the new MRO solution for the airline. “As part of the Lufthansa Group we are proud that more and more members of the ‘corporate family’ are switching to AMOS. Our software is considered within the airline group as a cost-saving product and we are pleased to live up to our reputation of being a software supplier delivering a high-quality product which ensures a quick return on investment,” stated Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS. Lufthansa CityLine is aiming for a lean AMOS implementation. The time line for this project is of paramount importance to ensure a smooth system migration. “The implementation of AMOS will make our MRO operations even more efficient and flexible. AEROFLOT TAKES OFF WITH AMOS
AMOS has expanded its presence in Russia with Swiss-AS more than pleased to welcome Aeroflot, Russia’s leading airline, to the AMOS community in early December 2013. AMOS won the official tender process which was hosted by the Russian Government early in 2013. Since 2010, Aeroflot Group member Rossiya Airlines has been using AMOS to maintain their fleet. On a corporate level the Aeroflot Group is considering to roll out AMOS not only to the de facto national flag carrier Aeroflot, but likewise to some of its subsidiaries. “It is great to see that we have made inroads into the Russian market in recent years and have gained such big market share and popularity in Russia. It is an honor for us to deploy AMOS at Aeroflot and support their technical division with the latest industry trends and know-how,” said Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS. Aeroflot is now eager to introduce AMOS with the vision to support the Aeroflot technical department in implementing the latest innovations in the MRO business while assuring full compliance with international standards. The ultimate goal of the scheduled 18-month project is to benefit from the full breadth and depth of AMOS once the implementation process is successfully completed. Aeroflot will use the MRO software for all aircraft types in order to assure a smooth implementation process and achieve an early return on investment.
UTAIR AVIATION GROUP TAKES OFF WITH AMOS
Swiss-AS, was also able to confirm in early December 2013 the latest addition to its loyal customer base: UTair Aviation Group. “We are impressed by the highly efficient evaluation process of UTair, which took only a few months though it included a tender process, an onsite presentation and an exchange of information between members of the AMOS community,” said Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS. For UTair it was of paramount importance to find a proven, best-of-breed to modernize and harmonize their MRO software environment. Initially, UTair will implement AMOS for approximately a quarter of its fixed-wing fleet while more aircraft are to follow soon after the go-live. “With the first class MRO software from Swiss-AS we intend to significantly improve UTair’s capabilities in fleet management and MRO efficiency. This is especially important in view of deliveries of more than 80 new fixed wing aircraft expected in 2014-2018,” stated Oleg Loutsenko, UTair Technical Director.” A new multi-entity feature allows corporate organizations to process transactions between different corporate entities within a single AMOS environment. ROYAL AIR MAROC TAKES OFF WITH AMOS
ALSO in mid-December 2013, Swiss-AS and Royal Air Maroc (RAM) announced their agreements to implement AMOS at the Moroccan flag carrier. By launching an RFP process, followed by onsite software presentations in Casablanca, RAM was looking for an MRO software package capable of supporting the company’s restructuring strategy. Increasing personnel productivity and process optimization in the E&M sector are the main objectives. The implementation of state-of-the-art MRO software will ultimately result in reduced aircraft operating costs. Being a full-fledged and highly integrated software that is suitable to fulfil the activities of technical departments, AMOS was RAM’s preferred choice M&E software system. The go-live should take place approximately ten to twelve months after commencement. During that time 100 back-office users and more than 200 technical staff will be familiarized with AMOS and trained to use the MRO software in the context of the then newly-introduced maintenance processes. A considerable number of Swiss-AS employees are fluent in French and this will be a considerable advantage during the project as well as in the post-go-live phase. “It is a pleasure to welcome RAM, our first customer from North Africa, into the AMOS community. With the delivery of the B787 fleet, RAM will benefit from AMOS’ advanced functions, which address the specific needs of new generation aircraft.“ said Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS.
2013 — A SUCCESSFUL YEAR IN MANY WAYS FOR Swiss-AS
2013 was a very successful year for Swiss-AS in terms of new business, company growth and substantial product innovations. 12 new customers signed for AMOS in the 12 months. Among them AviancaTaca Holding, Scandinavian Airlines, CommutAir, Aeroflot, Vanilla Air, LOTAMS, Lufthansa Cityline, Royal Air Maroc and UTAir. Also, since April 2013, the newly opened AMOS office in Singapore has already gained its first customers, while the well-established US office continued to win high-profile deals in the Americas region. Due to the continuing success of AMOS, the Swiss-AS team has been growing and will further grow in all project and development related departments to cater for the needs of customers. By the end of 2013, Swiss-AS had almost 120 employees. A big milestone in 2013 was the release of AMOS 10. Apart from surface changes like adding widget functions and introducing a cleaner structure for the menu and status bar, major new developments have been launched with AMOS 10. With the introduction of ‘Multi Entity’ functions in AMOS and the new ‘Maintenance Program’ Swiss-AS responded to the requirements of complex maintenance organizations. In addition, the competitiveness of AMOS was strengthened by extending rotable control dimensions and improving ‘Resource Management’ functions and presented new features to cover the needs of new-generation aircraft operators. Another highlight of the past year was Swiss-AS being awarded ‘Best IT Software Provider 2013’ by Aircraft Technology Engineering and Maintenance (ATE&M). The year 2014 will be characterized by two important anniversaries: AMOS, which was launched as an MRO software development project by Crossair in 1989, turns 25. The company Swiss-AS, established in 2004 when the AMOS business activities were transferred from the IT department of SWISS to the newly founded subsidiary of SWISS called ‘Swiss AviationSoftware’, celebrates its 10th birthday. At the end of 2013, a research program was completed that investigated new system technologies and developed a prototype for the usage of AMOS on mobile devices. The main focus lies now on developing mobile, browser-based applications for a selected number of AMOS modules with the purpose of covering in a first phase, the complete line maintenance process. An all-new AMOS brochure will be released in early 2014 while the homepage SWISS-AS.COM will be equipped with additional information on AMOS and Swiss-AS.

SWISS-AS was able to announce in late January 2014, that one of the latest newcomers to the AMOS community is Oman Air. Following a thorough selection process, which included two tenders and a number of presentations, Oman Air finally found AMOS to be the optimum solution in replacing its legacy system. AMOS fully meets Oman Air’s need to benefit from state-of-the-art developments and industry benchmarks in MRO software, to sustain and extend its competitive advantage. The national carrier has an open and flexible approach to re-engineering its processes in accordance with proven aviation best-practices, which will be implemented with AMOS. The goal here is sustainable cost reduction, as well as an improvement of the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the engineering division. Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS said: “During the extensive evaluation period we have got to know the team of Oman Air as very friendly and reliable business partners and we are looking forward to starting the project.” Wayne Pearce, CEO of Oman Air, added: “Operational effectiveness and cost reduction are two vital areas for Oman Air and we are pleased to be adopting the Swiss-AS AMOS MRO software, which will help us to manage our maintenance, engineering and logistics requirements.“ The implementation project in Muscat is expected to take approximately ten months and designated AMOS users will be made familiar with the new MRO software via e-learning and classic classroom training. Swiss-AS’ AMOS Operation Services (AOS) team will support Oman Air in terms of server and database operation. Prior to the official project start, Swiss-AS worked with the Middle East airline to evaluate and size the required hardware for the operation of AMOS.
JAPAN AIRLINES’ SUBSIDIARIES TAKE OFF WITH AMOS
SWISS-AS, in cooperation with Lufthansa Systems, are proud to announce that the airlines Japan Transocean Air (JTA), J-AIR and Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC) have chosen AMOS as their joint aircraft maintenance management software. “We are delighted to add JTA, J-AIR and RAC to our loyal customer base. This marks a mutual success for our close cooperation with Lufthansa Systems in the Asia-Pacific region,” stated Ronald Schaeuffele, CEO of Swiss-AS. AMOS has been represented in Singapore since April 2013. In cooperation with Lufthansa Systems, an AMOS business unit has been set up in Singapore to better reach customers in the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership has proven its worth during the common pre-sales phase and will certainly add value in the AMOS implementation process. The three airlines, all subsidiaries of Japan Airlines, have decided to implement and use AMOS jointly in a single system environment to exploit synergy effects within the group. WITH the release of Alkym Version 5.4 Volartec had the pleasure to announce in early November 2013 a complete new Safety Management System (SMS) Module to enhance the already fully integrated maintenance management solution on offer. Complementing the Quality Assurance Module along with the integrated digital document module M-Files the SMS module was the next natural evolution for Alkym. Just a few highlights of the SMS module included in Alkym relate to the ability to: • Define responsibility levels and permissions associated for all the resources that intervene in the management of SMS; • Enable the publication and revision of policies, procedures and all the documents associated to the management of operational security; • Record events associated with safety, such as incidents (events that impact safety directly) or as occurrences (events that may result in an incident); • Allow the user to categorize the event and apply a criticality rate in relation of the risk associated; • Monitor all the investigations of events and highlight the items expired. The Safety Manager or Executive may perform recommendations and monitor the implementation; • Using the SMS module, provide statistical reports and graphical analysis of trends. These reports may be performed in accordance to the incident type, aircraft type or location. PAWA Dominican became the 50th Alkym customer when they completed the implementation project in four weeks in October 2013. Volartec also added a new customer in mid-December 2013 in S Group International Airways from Kyrgyzstan who have a hosted version of Alkym to currently manage the A320 aircraft. In a further development, a full time on-site Volartec representative has been placed in Conviasa, Venezuela for 12 months. With the continued growth plans for the flag carrier with new aircraft (13 new E190 on order) they requested Volartec assist them to ensure a smooth fleet expansion process. Also, Cayman Airways are currently implementing Alkym with a Go Live date expected in February 2014 and new start up VECA Airlines based in El Salvador has implemented Alkym since December 13 with all new aircraft entering the fleet being added as they arrive.

ATIONAL AIRWAYS CORPORATION (NAC) was founded in 1946 and is considered as one of the biggest general aviation organizations in South Africa. The company has its head office at Lanseria Airport, Johannesburg with four sites within South Africa. Working with customers across the African region and the globe, NAC offers an extremely wide range of products and services including‌ fixed wing aircraft sales (from piston engine and turbo prop engine aircraft to corporate business jets and medium sized passenger jets); comprehensive fixed wing aircraft maintenance (from line support to C-checks); specialized refurbishment, conversions and upgrades to aircraft; fixed wing charters; air safety training; pilot training; Helicopter charters; sales of rotary wing aircraft with a comprehensive maintenance service; Piper aircraft maintenance and sales; spares sales and support.

As part of the global implementation, and prior to the AMASIS migration itself, a detailed convergence study had to be undertaken to validate that no aircraft related specific functionality was lost and making sure that the global process was simplified and the life of users was made easier, with a high level of quality. In a few words, every aircraft type set up had to be seen as a small project within the global NAC implementation. After the migration, from the various tools and even spread sheets previously used, two systems remained (whatever the maintenance base and aircraft type),

Every maintenance location across the company’s sites and operations also had to be connected with a harmonization process to ensure that they were all using the same tools and processes, whatever fleet and final customer was involved. Another major challenge that NAC had to face was to allocate the right costs to the right account, bearing in mind the multiplicity of different participants and contract types involved in each single transaction (aircraft owner, lessor, customer, operator, etc.). Therefore there was no other option but to launch a full project

to integrate the aircraft maintenance system into the financial system in a real-time environment. The decision was also made to combine this full integration of major systems together with an AMASIS upgrade – part of the integration requirement being native within the latest AMASIS release.
MAJOR MILESTONES IN THE MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION PROJECT
This multi-dimensional project had to be organized and divided into different stages that would eventually run in parallel. The biggest ‘hot topics’ that had to be addressed were as follows:
MANAGEMENT VISION FOR NAC IS STABILITY and reliability together with excellent support from ifrSKEYES, the AMASIS release and associated internally developed modules, have become the foundation for the application software suite at NAC. The ‘go-live’ for the integration of AMASIS with the financial system is targeted for April 2014 Using ProFound UI development application tools, together with AMASIS and its customized solutions, NAC is not at all limited to providing its management team and
its valued customers with various portals, either direct or remotely accessible through tablets or smart phones, to ondemand statistics, sales figures, maintenance costs, contract performance, aircraft reliability graphs and statistics. Customers will be in a position to view the maintenance progress and costs on their aircraft, place on-line orders for spares and request quotations, etc.AMASIS will be NAC’s preferred maintenance application software solutions for many years to come.

• Mapping and modelling of the business processes, together with the financial processes; the goal being to generate invoices in real time environments with no double capture and with excellent reliability of involved data. • Data cleaning and upload for each aircraft type from their former applications into AMASIS, and setting for compliance with the maintenance and financial processes. • Integration of AMASIS and finance application with setting of workflow type rules and accesses to map the global processes plus setting of relevant alerts and warnings to key users or managers. • A dummy global migration to check the overall logic of the process. • Training the users, considering AMASIS not as a stand-alone system but as being integrated in the context of the whole business. • Cleaning of pure migration (AMASIS V8.50 – AMASIS V9.20) highlights. • Go live.
CUSTOMIZATIONS
In accordance with NAC’s requirement, this reengineering of processes and tools didn’t exclude the company’s in-house development capabilities from generating home-grown applications in the future for specific needs; instead, the re-engineering was designed to be fully customized, covering the industry standard for an MRO module, using real-time transactions, table definitions, transaction processing and business processes/rules. In addition, various modules were designed, and coded internally in and around AMASIS to support NAC’s business demands: Spares Quotations, Customer Order Entry module with spares sales, Sundry Invoicing module, Stock-take module, MRO module and Flight Operations module. NAC’s IS department developed customized solutions built using ProFound UI for Windows look-and-feel with navigation, running on underlying RPG ILE code with embedded JAVA scripting. All modules are ‘read and write’ from standard AMASIS files in a real-time environment. n

PD: 2MoRO is a French independent company dedicated to Aviation MRO software and founded in 2004 with the meeting of two teams: one of MRO experts and the other of IT specialists. That’s the meaning of our company name… 2 Teams specialized in the MRO market (2MoRO). This combination has given us credibility in both maintenance and operations departments as well as in the IT departments of prestigious companies like Safran Group and Air France Industries. Since then, 2MoRO has developed Aviation MRO software to complete the world proven SAP ERP with user-oriented and innovative off-the-shelf functionalities. Since founding, we have been involved in major European R&D projects as a technology provider and we invest a lot on innovation. Our main drivers are to both enhance our software with innovation (simulation algorithms, mobility, RFID, cloud computing, integration with embedded data, geolocation, Green IT, data mining…) and, of course, to anticipate market needs as we develop these new functionalities in partnership with end-users. AIRCRAFT IT: What is the attraction of aircraft related IT? PD: Aircraft operators, maintenance facilities and aeronautics manufacturers share the same concerns with respect to IT: their aircraft/ equipment collect and transmit ever more data but they do not exactly know how to take benefit from them and improve the profitability of their businesses. Mastering the exchange of data and giving value to data are a central concern of aviation companies. 2MoRO has always worked on the design of software for business optimization through he secure sharing of computer data within the same company or with other systems. From the beginning of our business, our aim in 2MoRO has been to design software that would have to integrate with other systems and communicate with them in the most standard and integrated way.
AIRCRAFT IT: What is guiding business principle drives 2MoRO? PD: Listen and learn from the customers, and then propose usercentric, process driven solutions allowing possibilities for innovative services developments. Indeed, 2MoRO carries in its genes the need for innovation and the commitment to support its customers in the appropriation of new features and new services making their businesses more efficient and profitable. We do not want to offer the same software as our competitors. Instead, 2MoRO’s software, specialized in aviation MRO needs, completes other programs that are often leaders in their market. Our goal is that customers benefit from the best software at the best total cost of ownership. Too many companies have implemented multiple software packages which sometimes run the same types of data without global coherence. In the end, they have trouble identifying what software provides the right information to make the right decisions. AIRCRAFT IT: What has been 2MoRO’s greatest IT achievement? PD: We are proud to provide two solutions certified by SAP (Aero One® and Aero-Webb®). As you know, SAP is the ERP software world leader vendor and thanks to our technical approach, we offer airlines, helicopter operators, maintenance centers and OEMs the opportunity to simplify their global information system. One technology to cover all their businesses processes. Our third solution, BFly®, capitalizes experiences on R&D projects and on our SAP add-ons in a global data model and a complete catalog of services for MRO activities and much more if needed. This is a hybrid solution which enables the customizing of screens for users’ needs and uses a catalog of proven functions. 2MoRO has designed BFly® to be independent from technical constraints (operating system, database, browsers and other third party licenses). AIRCRAFT IT: What has been 2MoRO’s greatest business achievement to date, and why? PD: 2013 was a successful year for 2MoRO. At first, we won eight new projects, of which the two most recent were with Airbus Helicopter maintenance centers. Secondly, we were also able to support our historical customers, Turbomeca (helicopter engines) and Snecma (aircraft engines),
in the expansion of our solutions by maintaining with them the reactivity and the quality of service that have kept them loyal over eight years. AIRCRAFT IT: What have been 2MoRO’s disappointments and what have you learned from them? PD: The processing time required to move from the innovation of an R&D project to its commercial deployment on the market. We are now looking for association with end customers both in our R&D projects and in the commercial deployment of the solution. If there are any volunteers among readers, feel free to contact us. AIRCRAFT IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what 2MoRO does for aviation customers? PD: 2MoRO makes affordable state-of-the-art MRO IT solutions thanks to its alternative approach and through innovative technologies and services. PD: Our product philosophy is to continue to anticipate market needs and propose solutions based on the new technological developments of tomorrow. We will also extend our presence in Asia Pacific with a regional office in Malaysia, to be closer to our customers and partners. AIRCRAFT IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? PD: To build the capacity to make information systems ‘global’ in a heterogeneous software environment, having in mind that security and confidentiality are a must. T
HE FOCUS OF this series is the emergence of S1000D as the new information exchange standard for civil aviation and the significant stepchange it represents in the way all participants in the civil aviation ecosystem will create, manage, deliver, access, and use information in the future. Along with the gradual adoption of S1000D for new-generation aircraft programs is the ongoing requirement to
simultaneously support iSpec 2200 standards for existing programs. When looking at early adopters, let’s start by specifying what early adoption means in two respects. First, early adoption applies to organizations that are actively creating or working with S1000D content. Early adopters in this sense are the primary original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – Airbus, Boeing,
Bombardier, and other airframe manufacturers – that have identified S1000D as the information standard for their new-generation programs. Early adopters also include suppliers to the primary OEMs who provide components and systems for new-generation aircraft. These OEMs are creators of technical information and, as such, play a role early in the lifecycle of an aircraft and the creation of its technical information. In contrast, airline operators and their technicians are consumers of technical information. Being further downstream in the introduction of new aircraft, they have not been early adopters actively working with S1000D content. This is largely because airline operators are just now taking delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, while the Airbus A350 and Bombardier CSeries aircraft are not yet in general production or in active service. Second, and more importantly for the purposes of this article, early adoption applies to best practices being implemented by OEMs to supply data in the S1000D standard while still supporting data standards for existing aircraft programs. It is this second type of early adopter that is setting the standard by which others in the civil aviation ecosystem will measure their systems in the 21st century. Let’s take a closer look.
Best practice in a single system Suppliers to primary airframe manufacturers are taking the lead as early adopters of best practices to adopt systems that let them create and manage S1000D-based information in a single system with iSpec 2200 data, while airline operators have largely stepped out of the conversations determining how critical information technology that makes their businesses run will impact them. All participants in the civil aviation ecosystem are at a crossroads to identify what the adoption of newgeneration aircraft means across their organizations and determine how they will equip themselves to compete in the 21st century.

ADOPTION OF S1000D: ENGINE MANUFACTURERS TAKE AN EARLY LEAD
One segment of the civil aviation ecosystem that is actively adopting S1000D as required by the primary OEMs, and tackling head-on the challenges of supporting multiple specifications, is engine manufacturers.
Living in a multi-spec environment Primary OEMs including Airbus, Boeing, and Bombardier are driving adoption of S1000D across the civil aviation ecosystem by requiring technical information in S1000D for new-generation aircraft. The primary OEMs drive the information standard with which everyone else in the ecosystem has to work. Other OEMs have to produce information for Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, etc., in both iSpec 2200 and S1000D, and airline operators live in the middle of this multi-spec environment. OEMs and airline operators need to figure out how to accommodate both sets of standards and can adopt best emerging practices to mitigate the cost and complexity of meeting evolving requirements.
Global manufacturers of aircraft engines face a dilemma common to many OEMs — steadily rising costs to capture, manage, and distribute technical information in multiple exchange standards for complex product lines, global partnerships, and business process needs. Like other large OEMs, in order to support their customers’ and suppliers’ requirements, engine manufacturers must produce technical information in iSpec 2200 and now S1000D standards. New S1000D requirements have meant that they faced the costly and complex possibility of developing multiple systems. For some manufacturers, supporting S1000D also has meant the

At the same time, they have recognized that cobbling together various applications and databases over time to meet changing requirements is not an alternative or feasible solution either. What these large manufacturers have done is adopt a single solution suited to their technical information requirements for the 21st century.

BEST PRACTICES: MODERN TECHNOLOGY PLUS DOMAIN EXPERTISE
In addition to adopting modern technology that underlies a single technical information management system for both existing and new-generation fleets, these early adopters are also doing something else that is different. They are calling on vendors who are experts specifically in aviation and aerospace. Many of the components of an information management solution are available from a variety of vendors that serve a broad range of industries. However, a key differentiator that allows OEMs to get the most benefit out of advanced technology is working with aerospace domain experts. For example, while an organization can use a number of generic XML editors, a CSDB, or integrations between its technical information and other enterprise systems, it can fall short of getting the full value of the technology if not applied to its specific use cases. OEMs that call on product-based solutions adapted for the specific use of the aviation community show marked added value in terms of time to deployment, productivity, and lower overall cost. What’s more, these early adopters have researched the time, effort, and budget required to develop custom solutions based on generic technology. They have made the wiser decision to invest in providers with dedicated aerospace solutions with roadmaps set to mature through time based on the input of other aerospace customers.
RESULTS
These large OEMs are not going cold-turkey, jumping quickly from their existing systems to the new technical information management system. Rather, they are making the transition to a new multi-spec system over the course of multi-phase implementations in order to minimize the cost and disruption of solution adoption. The single system combined with the phased approach has helped OEMs realize benefits that include: • Through the consolidation of multiple platforms, dramatic and quickly achieved reductions in content conversion costs, IT maintenance and administration costs, as well as lower training costs for end-users previously charged with working in multiple application platforms. • Efficiency gains resulting from speedier review and decision-making processes through the use of both internal and external workflows to capture and respond to business and technical requirements from the manufacturer’s end customers. • New revenue streams through improved business flexibility to meet customer needs for custom publications, automated delivery of content to external portals or data stores, or other revenuegenerating customers or program-specific requirements that were difficult to respond to using legacy system capabilities. • Lower cost per publication with improved support for custom publications, distribution of updated content to end-customer portal sites, and traditional content delivery mechanisms. • Improved content consistency and accuracy thanks to increased re-use of material that is common across multiple products, publication types, or business units.
AIRLINE OPERATORS: PASSIVE PARTICIPANTS IN A CHANGING INDUSTRY
While, on the OEM side, there are several early adopters of single systems designed to handle multiple specifications for existing and new-generation fleets, the picture is much different on the airline operator side. S1000D became the international exchange standard in technical information for civil aviation in 2004. As of mid October 2013, 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliners had been delivered out of a total 131 orders1. Orders for the A350 stood at 7252, and Bombardier had received more than 170 orders for its CSeries aircraft3. Each aircraft program uses S1000D for the basis of its technical information. Nearly a decade has elapsed since S1000D entered into civil aviation and the first new-generation aircraft began rolling off the production lines. That decade saw airline operators step back from conversations on information exchange standards and the technology discussions that will impact them for decades to come. Northwest Airlines was the sole early adopter

supporting multiple specifications in a single system among airlines. Delta gains that benefit through the merger of the two airlines. Outside of this, airlines have been slow in preparing for this change in the industry. Since new-generation aircraft are just now entering service, this is somewhat to be expected. However, because airline operators have removed themselves from discussions in the S1000D User Group, the ATA e-Business Program’s Civil Aviation Working Group, and other civil aviation conversations, they are not poised to scale their existing technical information management systems to meet requirements of new-generation aircraft programs. Instead, the majority of airline operators are taking what’s coming to them from the primary OEMs by default. Rather than making business decisions from an informed perspective, they are now starting to live through the changes that are on their doorstep without knowing what these changes mean. Absence from the conversations about information standards and technology means airline operators are dependent on others to guide them through this process. This can be a challenge for both the airline and the solution provider. Here the solution provider needs to be able to share S1000D knowledge and provide training and coaching as well as a product that aids the airline in producing, managing, and delivering content in the multi-spec environment.
JOIN THE CONVERSATION, GET PREPARED
Rather than highlight early adopters among operators, then, here we recommend to airline operators that they take proactive steps to learn about what new S1000D specifications mean for their maintenance and engineering teams as well as their technicians. Get involved with the ATA e-Business Program, attend the S1000D User Forum, discover training options available today. Read the previous articles in this series about who is impacted by new information standards and why; as well as options for charting an optimal course to meet new requirements. Explore options available to you from vendors offering solutions, request demonstrations, watch webinars. Now is the time to start establishing plans. If you began making plans for a single authoring tool and IETP (interactive electronic technical publication) in the past (as airline operators started to do several years ago), dust them off and fill in the gaps. Start from this foundation and build a plan that uses best practices so that you can fully understand the decisions you need to make as you take delivery of new-generation aircraft. Transitioning from a legacy system to one that will meet your needs for years to come should start now. Rather than backing into decisions because you lack information, face the future and walk into it with the right information so you can make the best decisions to support your business and your customers.

IRCRAFT MANUFACTURERS AND operators have to differentiate their product from that of their competitors by offering customers ways to fly more often and/or further at lower cost. Towards this end, reducing maintenance costs can be a way to reduce the costs of aircraft use while ensuring a high level of service and safety. Part of our research work at 2MoRO Solutions focuses on forecasting aircraft maintenance tasks and optimizing the planning of those tasks. This paper looks at the prototype prognostic tool that has grown out of this. The solution described takes advantage of heterogeneous raw data available around the aircraft lifecycle to better predict maintenance tasks and improve aircraft health monitoring. Prediction of maintenance tasks helps to reduce diagnostic work as well as delays and costs caused by unscheduled maintenance events. Being able to forecast potential defaults, malfunctions, failures and errors is of considerable help to operators and maintenance professionals. It provides the right diagnosis and supplies a list of resources necessary to reduce maintenance time. Available data are made up of in-service data (derived from the aftermarket phase) and referential data (created mostly during the design phase). On the prototype presented in this paper, both kinds of information are pre-selected, analyzed and pre-processed in order to apply data-mining tasks. The mining task provides the discretional or predictive goal in accordance with user needs. The prognostic tool combines and aligns both types of data to highlight timing differences between the maintenance plan and the real-life maintenance application. This correlation provides the link between the referential and in-service data: a link that can assist manufacturers in monitoring aircraft configurations and help with supplying the right resources in the right place at minimal cost. The proposed correlation adapts maintenance plans in accordance with the operating environment. It is made by identifying specific frequent patterns called ‘critical behaviors’ or ‘typical behaviors’. ‘Critical behaviors’ are identified by performing a data-mining task that extracts frequent patterns. It uses several extraction constraints, including a sliding window, to extract straightforward patterns, satisfying users’ needs. The extracted patterns represent frequent ‘similar’ contextual uses and contextual behaviors associated with maintenance tasks, and specific inspection reports
identifying default, malfunction, fault or failure. We’ll deal with the components of this methodology as follows. The first section details the types of information on which the analysis is based and presents the way they are merged and pre-processed. The second section describes the data-mining task used to identify critical behaviors and explains how the resulting patterns are used to predict aircraft maintenance events and analyze equipment performance trends. Finally, we conclude by explaining the next improvement in and ideas for industrial applications of the proposed framework.
DATA DESCRIPTION AND PRE-PROCESSING
The types of information on which the analysis is based and presents, and the way they are merged and pre-processed. Before applying a data-mining task, a pre-processing step is needed to adapt raw data and improve the mining (description and/or predictive) results. The preprocess step consists in analyzing, strengthening and organizing data. In order to identify critical behaviors, our prognostic prototype uses in-service and referential data. • In-service data are characterized by the context in which the aircraft is used. It includes information about aircraft operations and MRO such as flights details, pilot reports, aircraft configuration… but also maintenance reports and inspection reports. It describes a set of flights by detailing the airports from which the aircraft took-off and landed, flight duration, percentage of aircraft loading and fuel consumption. It also includes maintenance tasks performed during the life of the aircraft: each such task is linked to the associated equipment’s part number (PN) and serial number, to the counter values of the equipment and to the whole counter values of aircraft. • Referential data includes OEM specifications such as the maintenance planning document (MPD) and aircraft maintenance manual (AMM). The AMM describes the frequency of and conditions to apply precautionary maintenance tasks during the aircraft’s life. These tasks represent a hierarchical tree describing the different parts of the aircraft and this structure is available through the manufacturer’s technical data book, called Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC), also produced by manufacturers and compliant with ATA Spec standard. The pre-process module of our framework aligns and merges both kinds of available data according to time and to the aircraft’s operations (number of flight hours, take-offs and landings, etc.). The connection with heterogeneous data is performed chronologically and describes events that occurred during the equipment/aircraft life cycle. Figure 1 shows an example of merging inservice and referential data. The chronology aligns aircraft/equipment status, mission conditions, expert reports and maintenance tasks. Scheduled tasks are represented twice: when they were planned (represented by green triangles) and when they were actually performed (represented by red triangles). In order to identify critical behaviors, users of the framework have to determine ‘critical points’ (failure, default, malfunction, maintenance task…). Critical points are reference flags that users can apply to analyze trends and associated usage behaviors. For each corresponding critical point, aligned data is associated to a usage sequence. A usage sequence is a succession of life cycle events ending at a specific critical point. Sequences ending with the same critical event are grouped in order to identify typical usage/ condition behaviors contributing to the corresponding ‘critical point’. According to the representation described above (referential and in-service data), the framework builds a pattern of typical wear behavior for aircraft / aircraft parts/ equipment. In practice, for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) purposes, each maintenance action is defined for a specific default/ malfunction/ fault/ failure caused on a particular equipment identifier (PN). According to this principal, we can infer that possible correlation between the type of use of the equipment and failure/ wear models can be considered as a correlation between type of usage for equipment and maintenance task associated to the failure/wear. Analyzing and comparing critical behaviors leading to several ‘critical points’ allows us to identify some
usage or trend influences on other equipment or groups of equipment. The following section describes the data mining task that identifies critical behaviors and allows the prediction of maintenance tasks.
FRAMEWORK MINING TASK
The data-mining task used to identify critical behaviors and how the resulting patterns are used to predict aircraft maintenance events and analyze equipment performance trends. Current thinking informs us that there are plenty of forecasting tools on the market. However, the optimization of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks dates taking into account several constraints set by the aircraft operators and/or the maintenance centres (as qualified resources availability based on the aircraft configuration) is done manually. We propose a data mining tool that compares the maintenance schedule set by manufacturers with available and actual historical in-service data (such as flight hours) in order to forecast future dates for aircraft maintenance. This forecast represents the current aircraft maintenance plan. On this proposed framework, next steps forecasting identification is configured in the context of the aircraft/equipment life cycle. They are keyed out from the sequences of databases described above. Remember that sequences depict combined aircraft lifecycle data associated to a maintenance task application or to a specific critical point. We apply a descriptive and predictive maintenance task that creates a case-based model to identify typical critical behaviors. This model relies upon data to identify the most frequent (and then typical) sequence of usage and environment conditions leading to the specific critical point. Extracting frequent behaviors is interesting and very useful when building wear models for each critical point sequence. If a group of behaviors occurs several times on several aircraft (of the same kind) before the execution of maintenance task(s), a logical correlation between corresponding equipment wear and those behaviors can be established. Those models are built by extracting frequent historic patterns from in-service data. Pattern extraction is used in several domains to identify several kinds of machine behaviors as in ‘Rabatel 09’ for trains and in ‘Hirate 06’ for astronomic robots. Our data-mining application extracts straightforward sequences from a set of built data. It provides a set of temporal interval sequential patterns from a set of discrete temporal sequences. The extraction process takes several parameters (temporal, frequency, accuracy, interested data dimension) for adapting the provided patterns to users’ specifications. It also applies a growth pattern approach by performing a vertical extraction based on database projection. Recursively the algorithm first extracts frequent patterns and then projects sequences data base. The extraction implements specific parameter (time) constraints and applies a sliding window in order to consider different data merging combinations. For instance, for aircraft operational data… …let Vi refer to the flight i…Mj refer to a maintenance task (a critical point) j and…S=<S1;S2> be a set of historic sequences where S1=< (0;V1)(2;V2)(3;V3)(5;M1) > and S2=< (0;V1)(2;V3)(3;V2)(6;M1) >. Let a frequency constraint be equal to 2. Our method returns the sequence: < ([0;0]V1)([2;3]V2 V3)([5;6]M1) >. These sequence intervals express an uncertainty for the exact moment when data occur. The extracted sequences mean that: “If flight V1 occurs, followed by both flights V2 and V3 in any order but in a time interval [2;3] after V1 then, maintenance task M1 is performed in a time lying in the interval [5;6] after V1”.
Such a pattern allows us to group V2 and V3 in the same relevant behavior. As far as we know, there is no pattern extraction algorithm that provides such structured patterns. The extracted result consists of temporal interval sequence patterns representing frequent behaviors associated to a specific critical point or to a maintenance task. Interval timestamps express an uncertainty as to the exact moment when specific events/observations appeared relative to the whole patterns events/observations. The degree of uncertainty is managed by the size of the sliding window which is fixed by users. Each extracted pattern is associated with a frequency and to an accuracy value respectively greater than a frequency and accuracy thresholds fixed by users. These extracted patterns help with anticipating maintenance tasks execution according to their usage history: mission conditions, flights, reports and aircraft configuration; to their usages conditions: flight configuration, aircraft configuration, weather conditions, etc. In addition to frequency and accuracy extraction criteria other relevant measures can be used. We can combine the criteria for the life-service part of the pattern with those of patterns associated to other critical points. Such a correlation allows us to evaluate the accuracy of a prediction decision with regards to a specific part or to the whole aircraft wear model status The aim of our method is to provide usage based models that can have a dual purpose: first a contextualized and precise management of aircraft maintenance tasks, second a fleshed out model of wear and technical events (fault/malfunction/ failure/ error) of aircraft equipment. For aircraft fleet management, the aim of frequent sequence extraction is to understand and predict critical technical events and maintenance task execution. Typically, for a specific type of aircraft, when a flight plan is defined, verifying its match with an appropriate wear model allows us to have a good idea about the aircraft interruption scheduling. A matching process using the flight plan is applied to several patterns extracted on critical point/ maintenance task behaviors to predict technical events/ maintenance tasks execution with an accurate time interval. In addition there are several other uses. For instance, figure 2 and figure 3 show Graphical User Interfaces that use the extracted results to visualize trends (figure 2) and the scheduling of the maintenance tasks (figure3).

The extraction model enables the selection of the kind of time parameter, which can either be real time or equipment life cycle counter with different stamp granularity level (e.g. for time stamp different time granularity can be considered – minutes for sensor reading values and hours for flights information). So the estimated maintenance management is more accurate than the theoretical maintenance manual. These estimations will enhance aircraft availability by accruing a good knowledge of future downtime and then reducing maintenance and exploitation costs. Wear and technical events models are also a way to correlate in-service data and environmental conditions with the criticality of execution for maintenance tasks. This correlation provides relevant equipment behavior profiles for specific environmental conditions. Hence based on forecast aircraft orders, equipment profiles can be exploited by aircraft manufacturers during pre-design analysis to adapt maintenance plans with the type of flight missions and environmental conditions foreseen by airlines and aircraft operators.
CONCLUSION
The next improvement in and ideas for industrial applications of the proposed framework We present in this paper a general description of a framework prototype. The prototype provides a data-mining service for contextualized maintenance forecast and contextualized equipment trend analyses.
The proposed solution uses heterogeneous (in-service and referential) aircraft data. It provides a straightforward added-value used to optimize the planning of maintenance tasks and to analyze equipment behavior trends. The services provided by 2MoRO solutions framework is an adaptable datamining task where users can configure the mining parameters to comply with application needs and data configuration. The proposed framework is an independent tool which can be integrated within a more general framework or platform services like BFly®, an architecture proposed by 2MoRO Solutions. It can also be integrated within a collaboration platform which distributes and secures data (e.g. SIMID1 project to which several companies contribute, including 2MoRO Solutions Airbus, Dassault Aviation, Eurocopter) The framework presented is central to the topical issue about reducing the costs of aircraft use by taking advantage of the growing amount of data available through the aircraft lifecycle. “Being able to define and execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in a manner compliant with regulations is business critical, but it can also drive efficiency.” Book (EFB) to catering procedures, SOPs should describe what process performers need to do and how to do it right. It should at the same time give compliance managers a line of sight from regulatory obligations to the individuals and process steps responsible for satisfying those obligations. A BMS or operational framework using a model-based approach can effectively record the complexity of an airline’s or aircraft operator’s operations in a way that is flexible enough to deliver targeted actionable views as well as accurate standard operating procedures (SOPs). The breadth and depth of visibility that will be gained into their operations will give users the greater understanding and control necessary to run a modern airline with the intricacy it demands. Here are six essential components this model of business should include so as to build attestable compliance:

AFETY AUTHORITIES AROUND the world have adapted the self-regulated approach to surveillance of the industry, encouraging airlines to take responsibility for their own safety management systems (SMS) while also ensuring compliance to relevant regulations. Managing safety is no small feat for an industry with such deep levels of complexity, on both the human and operational levels. Being able to define and execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in a manner compliant with regulations is business critical, but it can also drive efficiency. However, for that to be the case airlines must adopt an integrated approach whereby legislation and regulations are managed in the context of flight and Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operations.
AN INTEGRATED MODEL-BASED APPROACH TO COMPLIANCE
Achieving an integrated approach lies in having compliance, regulations and reporting systems as well as processes and procedures incorporated into a model-based Business Management System (BMS) for everything, including day-to-day operations. Compliance activities need to be implemented in the context of operations and also in a way that is agile enough to move with changes in regulation, business transformation or continuous improvement initiatives. The solution is a comprehensive model of business operations which clarifies responsibilities and links all compliance obligations to the related operational processes and systems. From MRO and Electronic Flight
1. RECORD COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS AND MONITOR CHANGES By recording their governance and compliance documentation into a business management system and linking them with their day-to-day operational procedures, compliance managers will know exactly what MRO procedures are impacted by changes in regulations or what sections in the EFB need updating. It will allow them to identify the gaps between where they are now and where they need to be to address compliance obligations. 2. ASSESS AND COMMUNICATE THE RISKS The business management system should capture any detail of the organization in a way that helps management understand how changes might affect each part of the business. For example, MRO projects might bring new risks, new processes and potentially new compliance issues. As such, having a clear visual representation of the relationships between people and processes will help to assess the potential risks any transformation will have on the airline and communicate these across the business. 3. DOCUMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES Without a defined process for maintaining and keeping controls up-todate, an airline’s procedures will soon be non-compliant due to normal changes in their business environments. A central (model-based) system or repository where regulations, standards, procedures and templates are kept and linked to show relationships will ensure consistency, fast
