Boeing pushes technology to new horizons

B

oeing announced in mid-January 2013 that Air France will deploy Boeing EFB system software on their 747-400 fleet in the second quarter of 2013. This is the first Boeing software solution designed to work on third-party Class 2 hardware, already used extensively at Air France. The ability to have a common EFB look and feel across an airline’s entire fleet, regardless of EFB hardware provider, provides airlines with significant operational savings.

“The use of Boeing EFB software on thirdparty hardware allows us to upgrade our older aircraft affordably and operate them more efficiently. We appreciate that with Boeing, we get not only industry-leading information services solutions, but also a dedicated focus on our unique business needs,” said Jacques Verriere, Vice President, Flight Operations Engineering for Air France.

Boeing’s previous EFB offerings were paired hardware and software solutions. The software-only offering is the result of a transformation in Boeing’s EFB strategy.

“Our customers tell us that our EFB solutions are the best on the market. However, given the ever-accelerating pace of change in technology and the wide variety of our customers’ business needs, we have begun offering a wide array of flexible solutions,” said John Maggiore, director of Airline Performance Management, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. “That’s how we strive to offer our customers the Boeing Edge.”

The new EFB software solution is one of many – both traditional and mobile – that Boeing is developing in partnership with customers as it delivers on its digital airline strategy: helping airlines connect data, information, people and technology across the enterprise to create efficiencies and make the best possible business decisions.

Boeing to Offer Inmarsat-4 Satellite Communication Bandwidth to Commercial Customer

Responding to global demand for mobile satellite communications

bandwidth, Boeing announced in early March 2013 that it has been certified by Inmarsat to offer commercial customers a variety of capabilities -- including 3G, Voice over Internet Protocol, streaming video, direct dialing and secure communications -- through Inmarsat’s Inmarsat-4 L-band service.

Boeing Commercial Satellite Services, a unit of Boeing Satellite Systems International, works with owners of active satellite systems to market available bandwidth and to include hosted payloads on spacecraft. Its technologies and expertise in government communications missions allow Boeing to tailor commercial solutions to specific customer needs.

“The demand for satellite communications continues to be greater than the supply, and Boeing continues to respond with effective, robust global coverage,” said Craig Cooning, chief executive officer of Boeing Satellite Systems International. “This offering reflects the importance of providing customers with a wide range of frequency bands to fulfill their increasing need for faster mobile communications and more data usage.”

Boeing linked to the Inmarsat-4 satellite fleet through Inmarsat’s new Meet-Me-Point, a connection that ensures the security of customer information. The connection completed certification testing last year and is now ready for operation. Boeing is also working toward the launch of three Inmarsat-5 Global Xpress® satellites, the world’s first globally available Ka-band service, which will deliver unparalleled speeds and bandwidth to customers around the world.

Boeing, KLM Demonstrate New Technologies to Optimize Flight

Also in early March 2013 Boeing and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines began a series of commercial flights that will demonstrate how several advanced technologies, fuels and concepts can significantly improve operational efficiency, save fuel and reduce carbon and noise emissions. The technology demonstration encompasses all aspects of an aircraft’s flight – preflight, takeoff, cruise, descent and post-landing.

The first of the flights, with a KLM Boeing 777-200 aircraft flying round trip from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, was on 8th March. A total of 26 flights are planned for a program called ‘Optimal Flight’ that will continue through 2013.

“The art of the possible comes to life with Optimal Flight: It combines all of Boeing’s current flight efficiency projects in a single program to demonstrate the most efficient, environmentally progressive flight possible,” said Mike Caflisch, director of airspace programs, Boeing Digital Aviation. “This demonstration program will help us determine where next to focus our research and development to deliver improvements to air traffic management and airline services for our customers.”

Each flight is being powered in part by sustainable aviation biofuel sourced from used cooking oil. Boeing is at the epicenter of the industry’s efforts to develop and commercialize renewable fuel sources that don’t compete with food, water or land resources.

The flights also feature new services that provide various advisories directly into the aircraft’s flight management computer (FMC) and mobile device in the flight deck.

Developed by Boeing Research & Technology, the flight services highlight applications that increase real-time situational awareness for pilots using advanced digital aviation and air traffic management concepts. They include: • Automation to integrate the dispatch and modified versions of the flight plan and performance data into the FMC. This saves work for the flight crew, allows for real-time adjustments and reduces errors by eliminating the need to make repeated FMC entries.

• Procedures and software applications that provide the air crew with recommendations to optimize the aircraft’s speed variance while providing real-time weather advisories in flight to save fuel and enable more accurate waypoint arrival predictions.

If the Optimal Flight Program is successful, Boeing and KLM will establish new operational procedures and recommendations for follow-on development programs with the partners, including NLR, TU Delft (Delft University of Technology), John F. Kennedy International Airport, Gander, Shanwick, NATS Domestic and Schiphol Group.

There is also focused research and development through a joint agreement between Boeing, KLM, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Air Traffic Control in the Netherlands. This agreement is an extension of an agreement first signed in 2002 to develop solutions for the sustained growth of aviation in the Netherlands.

“Boeing is committed to improving the efficiency of flight by working with progressive airlines such as KLM to accelerate smart technologies and make them available for regular commercial use,” said Julie Felgar, managing director of environment and aviation policy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Through our support and services organization and commitment to relentless research, we can help ensure their airplanes are safe, reliable and on time.”

“This is yet another great example of a value-added partnership between Boeing and the Netherlands, a country with an outstanding aerospace and technology industry,” said Brian Moran, vice president, Boeing Northern Europe. “KLM is one of the most progressive airlines in the industry and a great partner in our ongoing commitment to finding ways to realize savings in fuel and reductions in emissions and noise.”

PACE delivers Airbus A350 XWB Configurator Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has introduced a central configuration tool for the A350 XWB program. The A350 XWB configurator was developed by Berlin engineering software provider PACE and is based on the latest version of their flagship product Pacelab Cabin 7. The tool supports Airbus sales, marketing and customer engineering teams in creating airline-specific cabin layouts and aircraft configurations and presenting them in fully rendered 3D, with realistic representations of the selected materials and ambient lighting scenarios.

The A350 XWB configurator, delivered in late March 2013, ties in with Airbus’s new customization concept of offering aircraft buyers an extensive catalog of modular solutions to achieve a significant reduction in lead times. Key assets in this respect are the software’s intuitive, highly visual user interface, which facilitates the selection of suitable packages from the catalog; complex compatibility rules, which ensure that only valid configurations are considered; and real-time visualization, which makes it easier for the customer to examine the currently selected options.

“As the client-facing side of our customization concept, the A350 XWB configurator is an important sales and communication tool, which provides all the information airlines need to make a smart purchasing decision,” explains François Caudron, Airbus Head of A350 Customer & Business Development. “PACE has a proven track record with our company and we welcome their contribution to the A350 XWB customer experience.”

“We are very proud to have received this vote of confidence from Airbus. We consider their choice a strong validation of our leadership in the cabin configuration domain and of the long-standing relationship between our companies,” says PACE managing partner Alexander Schneegans.

Free fuel efficiency analysis FuelPlus offers free operational reporting module for fuel efficiency analysis.

FuelPlus clients are now able to take advantage of a new fuel efficiency module which has been added to the FuelPlus product suite.

The new Analytics module, announced in late March 2013, will enable FuelPlus clients to have a much deeper understanding of their operational activities and to manage a fleet wide fuel efficiency program. The module is being offered at no extra license cost to current clients and will complete a total end to end fuel management solution across both the commercial and operations team.

OSyS signs Fuel Management contract with Air Mauritius

Air Mauritius has selected the Optimized Systems and Solutions (OSyS) Fuel Management Solution (FMS) to further optimize its operational fuel usage, reducing associated costs and emissions.

“As an airline, we continue to focus on the improvement of our operational efficiency, including effective fuel management, which has a decisive impact on our bottom-line, ” said Fooad Nouraully, Executive Vice President Corporate Communications when announcing the agreement at the beginning of March 2013. “The OSyS solution will enable us to better manage our fuel conservation initiatives.

Flygprestanda announced in early April 2013 that their Performance Guru for iPad is now fully operational with a strong back office suite to support Operations Departments in managing their iPad fleets. It’s a native application which means that it will host performance server and airport data on the iPad without the need for an internet connection to do the calculations. The application may also be provided with an optional Weight & Balance module.

Flight Focus obtains MRO certification from EASA Flight Focus announced, in mid-March 2013, that it had received its MRO Part 145 certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency, its second EASA certification boosting its offered services and capabilities in producing and maintaining avionics component. This certification with Component rating C13 will enable Flight Focus to overhaul, repair, modify, test and inspect the products they produce.

A step forward for IFRSKEYES in Latin America Right at the end of December, 2012, TAME’s General Manager, Rafael Farias Ponton signed a contract with IFRSKEYES to implement both AMASIS (Aircraft Maintenance & Engineering IT solution) and KEOPS (Ops & Crew management IT solution) into TAME’s information system landscape.

Being demanding of with itself and in a continued effort to ensure its customers the highest standards of quality, TAE has chosen AMASIS and KEOPS to improve its daily operations at all levels. The implementation of both products started at the beginning of January 2013 by an audit to take into consideration the existing processes and TAME’s improvement objectives. The integration process is performed by the IFRSKEYES experts and the completion is planned for the end of the first semester 2013.

DAC International gains approval across the board

DAC International Secures Dual PMA

DAC International, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, announced in mid-February 2013 that the Federal Aviation Administration has provided Parts Manufacturer Approvals (PMA) for the company’s GDC62 Radio Altimeter Interface Unit and the GDC66 Fuel Quantity Adapter Unit.

The dual part approvals were accomplished by DAC International’s Engineering and Certification Division (ECD), in partnership with Cutter Aviation.

These converters, developed specifically for the Piper Meridian, permit the continued use of existing radio altimeter and fuel quantity computer and are required for the G950 cockpit retrofit STC owned by Cutter Aviation.

This PMA approval is the twentieth supplement on DAC International’s approval certificate.

DAC International Receives Product Approval From Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau

In early March 2013, DAC International announced that the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau has approved its Gen-X Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) hardware with Touch Panel Display. The Gen-X hardware is an avionics certified PC suitable for other applications when installed into an aircraft.

The product was developed

by DAC International to complement a Helicopter Moving Map and Auto Tracking System developed

by Navicom Aviation Corporation based in Tokyo, Japan. The NMS-01S utilizes DAC’s EFB hardware with Touch Panel Display and Iridium phone system. Using DAC’s EFB as the map generator and interface with the Iridium system has allowed Navicom to develop a more efficient installation by eliminating the use of interface boxes with the benefit of additional functions.

The new interface with auto-tracking system enables the transmission of character messages from air to ground including registered position from air to ground without the need for an additional interface unit.

DAC Provides GDC64 Solution for Bombardier Dash-8

By late March 2013, DAC International was able to announce that its GDC64 Tablet to Aircraft Interface Unit (TAIU) has received certification on the Bombardier Dash-8 with the help of Fokker Services in the Netherlands who are responsible for the

certification on aircraft.

This certification allows the iPad® EFB solution on the Dash-8 to be connected through the GDC64 TAIU and its ARINC 429 bus to the Flight Management System (FMS) as well as to the aircraft power. The ARINC 429 data from the FMS will allow iPad® applications (Apps) to utilize real time data and enhance cockpit capabilities.

The Fokker Services EFB for iPad® Solution is EASA certified (Class 2 Type B), requires no expensive ICT infrastructure and will be charged during all phases of flight. Easy installation ensures aircraft can be converted with very limited downtime.

The GDC64 connection developed by DAC International is specifically designed as an aircraft interface device to give the iPad® or any tablet a broad range of aircraft data without additional cumbersome Wi-Fi devices. You simply plug your iPad® into conveniently located connectors in any aircraft cockpit.

A Norwegian based operator is the launch Dash-8 customer for the EFB solution for iPad® with GDC64 connection and it is expected to be installed on more than 40 aircraft within the operator’s fleet consisting of all Dash-8 types. Due to its design, the GDC64 TAIU is suitable for use on a wide range of aircraft.

DAC Secures FAA Approval for GDC64 on Bombardier Learjet 60

Also in late March 2013, DAC International announced that the Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) of its sister company Atlantic Aero, issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the installation of DAC’s GDC64 Tablet Aircraft Interface Unit (TAIU) on the Bombardier Learjet 60 model.

The GDC64 developed by DAC International is specifically designed as an aircraft interface device to feed aircraft data to an iPad® or any tablet without additional costly Wi-Fi devices. This unique interface product routes live data from aircraft sensors and systems to tablets enabling a wide range of incremental functionality for the flight crew. You simply plug your iPad or Tablet into connectors conveniently located in the cockpit to get data and power to keep tablets fully charged during flight.

“We are excited regarding the possibility this product offers,” said General Manager of DAC International Francisco Hernandez. “With this product in the cockpit, operators will be able to fully leverage the benefits of using today’s Apps as well as future ones being developed to reduce cockpit workload and increase crew information and awareness.”

Aircraft flying into UK and Irish airspace are set to enjoy seamless data link service as they enter continental airspace from the North Atlantic and move across Western Europe. This is a result of UK NATS and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) working together with SITA, the air transport communications specialist, to deliver Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC) services to the British and Irish area control centers in compliance with the EC regulation 2009/29, which comes into force as part of the Single European Sky initiative.

The SITA service and systems support long haul and short haul versions of CPDLC. Long haul aircraft use a Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) version already implemented over the Atlantic Ocean. Aircraft with FANS systems will now use the SITA network and gateway to communicate with CPDLC systems in the UK and Ireland domestic centers. Short haul aircraft use the ICAO standard ATN version of CPDLC which works over the VDL mode 2 protocol, these aircraft will now use the SITA VDL ground stations and gateway to connect to the same UK and Ireland domestic center CPDLC systems.

The SITA data link front end processor (DL-FEP) gateway, which relay both FANS and ATN data traffic, uses a Pro-ATN router provided by SITA’s partner Egis Avia to connect to the SITA ground stations providing ICAO VDL mode 2 service. SITA has already deployed this gateway at NATS’ area control centers at Swanwick, Prestwick and its corporate and technical center in Whiteley.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the industry, and to support the service being provided to NATS and the IAA, SITA is upgrading 25 existing VHF ground stations in the UK, Ireland and surrounding countries. It is also investing in a further five new VHF ground stations across the UK mainland and Ireland.

In total, SITA operates a global network of over 1,200 VHF ground stations worldwide. SITA AIRCOM data link supports more than 180 airlines with more than 8,500 individual aircraft in routine airline operation.

More than 1,200 customer aircraft use advanced Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) avionics, enabling pilots to use data link instead of voice for communications with air traffic control.

SITA’S CrewTablet debuts on Malaysia Airline’s A380S: flagship service on flagship aircraft

Malaysia Airlines cabin crew began in mid-March 2013 using iPads* to enhance inflight services to customers traveling on the airline’s A380 flights.

The iPads are part of SITA’s innovative digital cabin crew solution, CrewTablet, which will enable crew members to quickly and easily access passenger and operational data.

Malaysia Airlines crew members will trial the new solution—which the airline has brandedMHcrew—for six months. MHcrew is much more efficient than traditional paper-based processes, enabling accurate, timely and superior service delivery to passengers.

Malaysia Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, said: “Passengers spend more time with our cabin crew than other employees. As key front-liners, we rely on our cabin crew to provide an outstanding guest experience to passengers. The

Malaysia Airlines’ in-flight supervisors will use CrewTablet on iPads that are fully integrated with the airline’s operational systems and other business applications. The crew will be able to access a host of information, including weather reports, seat layouts, frequent flyer programs, flight connection information and safety manuals, with the touch or swipe of a screen.

Cabin crew processes are normally paper-based.

With CrewTablet, a larger reserve of up-to-date information is available to the crew to deliver outstanding customer care, helping to better manage issues and improve service.

Cabin crew can be trained and up and running in less than one hour, so they can immediately work with more flexibility and efficiency.

CrewTablet will also enable Malaysia Airlines to conduct passenger surveys using iPads, rather than paper. Survey results and feedback can be derived daily, instead of monthly, hence providing the opportunity to quickly enhance or change service delivery accordingly.

With the use of digital forms and reports, CrewTablet reduces operational costs and improves in-flight preparations and onboard operations.

SITA notes that the service creates fuel savings by reducing the weight of traditional paper reports and manuals carried onboard. Crews can also use aircraft downtime to access digital training and certification courses.

CrewTablet can be integrated with any airline reservation or departure control system. It is part of SITA’s intelligent airline vision, which incorporates integrated technology, from passenger operations to aircraft operations, and next generation communications and infrastructure to drive better performance and accelerate business growth.

Malaysia Airlines will use CrewTablet for its A380 services between Kuala Lumpur and the cities of London, Paris and Hong Kong.

Navtech new and returning customers in Europe Braathens Regional, formerly Golden Air, returns to Navtech

Navtech iCharts for anticipated Class 2 EFB in the works for transitioning airline In late January 2013 Navtech Inc welcomed returning customer, Braathens Regional (formerly Golden Air Flyg AB), through a multi-year agreement for provisioning aeronautical electronic charts for the iPad, in a Class 2 EFB. Navtech iCharts will be supplied to the regional airline which operates scheduled and wet lease routes within Europe. Braathens Regional is also a subscriber to Navtech’s Airport Obstacle Database (AODB) for their ATR fleet.

Braathens Regional is a returning Navtech Charts customer and has recontracted in part because of the popularity and superior functionality of Navtech iCharts, the electronic charting application for the iPad. The airline intends to use iPads as an EFB Class 2 solution in the cockpit of their 17 aircraft SAAB and ATR fleet. “Braathens Regional will, after a trial period of minimum six months, utilize the Navtech iCharts application meaning that there will be no back-up paper charts,” said Braathens Regional, Director of Flight Operations Anders Fredriksson.

“We see this as a big step towards the paperless cockpit.”

Navtech iCharts is an application that brings Navtech electronic charts to your iPad. This allows the iPad to be used as a Class 1 EFB, or with regulatory and operational approval, as a Class 2 Type B device. Navtech has worked with a number of customers to achieve operational approval of the iPad as a Class 2 device. Navtech’s family of state-of-the-art aeronautical charts products have been developed using research from Human Factor specialists and by gathering data from, and working closely with, pilots having years of experience using aeronautical charts. Each chart includes enhanced symbology and communication features. Navtech’s Windowsbased electronic charts viewing application, NavtecheCharts, has been used by Navtech’s customers for over ten years. Continued product enhancements will form the infrastructure for Navtech to easily support all Classes of EFB and all devices from tablets to installed avionics.

Navtech Supports Spanish Start-Up Charter Airline

he past year was one of the safest in the history of civil aviation and the global civil aviation community appears determined to ensure the trend is maintained in future years. In pursuit of this lofty objective, the buzzword is Safety Management Systems (SMS), used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to signify a new, proactive and predictive management approach to safety in aviation. SMS is defined by ICAO as a “systematic approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures.” This ‘management’ approach to safety has emerged through an evolutionary process over the past three decades although the term SMS was used by ICAO in a formal document only in 2006.

ICAO is currently working in close collaboration with member states and international organizations to develop a new Safety Management Annex (No 19) dedicated to safety management responsibilities and processes; the new annex is expected to encapsulate all the safety aspects enshrined so far in International Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) contained in…

The new annex will include provisions on SMS as well as the collection, analysis, protection and exchange of safety data. The requirement to have an SMS in place is being progressively mandated by all civil aviation regulators and it is likely that by 2014, all operators would have to have a safety management system in place to continue their operations.

Processes define safety

The philosophy of SMS moves away from the reactive character of flight safety as practiced for decades to a new safety paradigm which is primarily proactive and predictive in its approach towards the hazards and risks that impact an organization as a whole. ICAO’s SMS Manual (Doc 9859), first published in 2006, introduced the new thought processes on safety; it defines ‘Safety’ as “The state in which the possibility of harm to persons or of property damage is reduced to, and maintained at or below, an acceptable level through a continuing process of hazard identification and safety risk management.” The acceptance that hazards and associated risks cannot be eliminated to zero levels goes along with the understanding that hazards must be identified and all efforts taken to minimize and mitigate related risks.

The key phrase in the definition of ‘Safety’ is the continuing process to manage risks. Moreover, the stress on the predictive approach implies extensive data gathering exercises in order to identify possible negative

The quantum of data required to be gathered and analyzed is so huge that only electronic manipulation would be up to that task. Information Technology (IT), inclusive of all its tributary technologies and replete with its convergence vehicles, is proving to be an efficient and ubiquitous hand-maiden for SMS. This paper addresses ways in which IT promises to facilitate the processes required to implement (and manage on a regular, day-to-day basis) SMS amongst operators; it will also introduce software applications that exist in the market already to electronically monitor the continual process of SMS in pursuit of predictive safety management.

Data or drivel?

An SMS framework requires specific activities and processes that must be performed by aviation service providers. The ICAO SMS framework comprises the following four components: • Safety policy and objectives; • Safety risk management; • Safety assurance; and • Safety promotion.

Of these, safety risk management (whose objective is to identify hazards, assess related risks, and develop appropriate mitigation strategies) and safety assurance (which involves processes to monitor compliance with international standards and local regulatory requirements) are the ones that stand most obviously to benefit from the contribution made possible with IT. Modern management systems (and SMS is no exception) tend to have data based decision making as one of their most critical attributes. As many organizations learn to their chagrin, data can be a double-edged sword; it must be kept pristine and wholesome to be of any use or have any meaning for the software employed to use it. Valid and accurate data (meeting the criteria for which it is collected) collected in a timely manner, with no exclusions and exceptions, consistently and continuously furnished, readily accessible to the user and kept reasonably secure from non-users, is the requirement for an IT solution to deliver to its user the full benefits sought. Requirements to these standards cannot be met through manual inputs and need to be available from the primary source in as short a time as possible after the event to which they relate. The old adage of ‘Garbage In Garbage Out’ is particularly and forcefully true for safety-related IT applications; imagine a safety-threatening incident or occurrence repeating itself because the data related to the first event was not ‘managed’ efficiently.

Hazards, risks and safety

The fact that aviation, especially civil aviation, has been rendered so safe in recent years is despite the reality that flying is inherently associated with hazards.

SMS stipulates that an organization should proactively identify hazards associated with its operations and the environment in which those operations are carried out.

Traditionally, hazards were identified through historical data on occurrences but SMS visualizes the hazard identification process to be one that incorporates controls and preventive measures through a systematic analysis of potential causes using new methodologies like the Bowtie model (first developed by Shell to meet the requirements for risk assessment in the oil and gas industry).

Hazard identification is logically followed by risk assessment and risk management which are the key focus areas of SMS. IT solutions permit the linking of hazard identification and risk management processes through a common strand. An infinite number of

Subsequent monitoring of the implementation stages can also be pursued through software queries, flags, and audits.

Audit management

A robust culture of internal safety audits is the hall mark of a ‘safe’ organization and defines its commitment to safety. Software applications permit, at the click of a few keys, the planning, scheduling, detailing of auditors, checklist creation, pre-audit briefings, conduct and recording of findings against ordained checklists. Not only that, it is also possible to track the logical follow-through to shortfalls identified by an audit team by way of assigning corrective actions, ensuring completion of actions through discrete responses, and re-audits if found necessary by the organization. A cynical ‘so what’s new?’ could be posed here; after all these activities have been going on even without software being involved.

This is the crux of the matter. With the complex nature of operations, an organization can now keep track seamlessly and without errors and omissions, of its audit regime’s continual process of ensuring safety through monitoring the organization’s processes and areas of potential systemic frailties.

Regulatory framework

As SMS aims at ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks — both international and domestic — it is important that an organization’s knowledge base be constantly updated to take account of the latest regulations, circulars and directives, as well as the latest audit checklists used by external regulatory agencies. While it is possible for an organization to keep its knowledge base in these respects updated manually,

APRIL-MAY 2013 | AIRCRAFT IT OPERATIONS | WHITE PAPER: SDS | 17 emerging software solutions would permit the updates to be carried out through direct, real time ‘feeds’ from regulatory sites into their SMS knowledge bases.

Suitable triggers would then warn users of the changes and updates. The end result would be a constantly updated SMS. This real-time regulatory update can have a tremendously positive impact on the ability to respond to changes in rules, and keep the SMS current.

Occurrence reporting and management

All around the personnel involved in operations, unusual occurrences are happening all the time. A good safety culture encourages a reporting system (guaranteeing confidentiality) for any occurrences impinging on safety. Some of these reports would be unimportant from the point of view of the safety manager; others would indicate the need for an escalation to the status of a hazard requiring detailed analysis of causes and potential risks. A software permitting such occurrence reports to be filed (anonymously if so chosen by the report filer) on line, with all subsequent logical actions being handled electronically to their conclusion would render the process prompt and hassle free — with no scope for reported occurrences being neglected due to human oversight. Some of these reports would entail investigations to garner more facts and elicit deeper understanding of the underlying causes.

Investigation management

A safety manager regularly needs to initiate investigations into reported occurrences, incidents or accidents. The discipline offered by software to manage investigations ensures that reports do not fall by the wayside just because the investigator is too preoccupied with other tasks or investigations.

Moreover, as the investigation methodology is imported from the relevant ICAO documentation, the requisite guidelines are adhered to; this channeled investigation process retains the focus on the essentials and the standardization in investigation reports makes for ease of comprehension. Investigation management tools also assist in following through the recommendations made by an investigator or an investigating board.

Meetings management

In any organization, safety is everybody’s business and SMS, with its systems approach, would need to bring different safety stakeholders together to discuss issues, indoctrinate personnel and managers, resolve disagreements, and occasionally thrust critical messages down unwilling throats. Meetings would be required and, once again, IT solutions can facilitate the smooth planning, scheduling, invitation, agenda dissemination, attendance recording, minutes preparation and distribution, and most importantly, follow up on actions

taken in pursuance of decisions taken at the meeting. The painstaking and time consuming activities take up a considerable proportion of a manager’s attention span; electronic and automated management through suitable software renders the whole process effortlessly efficient.

Safety and quality

Safety and quality are interlinked. While SMS focuses on hazard identification and management of associated risks, Quality Management would be concerned with conformity and compliance. The basic principles of both are complementary inasmuch as both contribute to safety. Moreover, many aviation organizations (especially airlines) are managing their Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) and Maintenance & Engineering Quality Assurance (MEQA) programs electronically. The data base for these two Quality programs also throws up safety cues e.g. exceedances data drawn from Flight Data Recorders provides inputs for safety trends and occasionally triggers for investigation.

Similarly, inefficient management of repetitive snags on an aircraft or ignoring MEL (Minimum Equipment List) expiry datelines has safety ramifications. Thus safety related data is extractable from Flight Data Monitoring and Maintenance & Engineering databases. This realization has led to the amalgamation of ‘Safety’ and ‘Quality management’ software into one solution. The combined software promises to stitch the two areas of management together into one efficient system. Safety managers can now manage, analyze and exploit data from Quality databases in the overall interest of safety. The addition of Quality inputs into the SMS has been made possible by emerging software solutions that promise to enhance safety levels — thus achieving the primary objective of SMS.

Integrated data base

Some of the other SMS related activities that could be supported by software solutions are safety archives, safety training, corrective action management, document management, safety trends analyses, and a dashboard type of module that encapsulates — for top management — a macro picture of the state of safety in an organization for a swift, instantaneous grasp of safety status and safety trends. All the data required for SMS purposes is manageable by today’s software in a single data base from where required bits of information can be pulled in by or pushed out to users with the requirement to access that particular data and with the rights to do so. Using an integrated data base rules out errors related to inconsistencies, missing data and interface errors associated with incompatible data bases.

Conclusion

Fifth generation IT systems employ networking technologies to manage applications as well as provide data storage irrespective of the nature, location and configuration of the hardware used by the client. Laptops, touch screen tablets (possibly with Windows 8 or a similar technology) or even smartphones are the future workstations while clouds will provide the corresponding data storage. Safety, in the context of aviation, covers a lot more than just operations; indeed it concerns almost every activity of the organization and one safety related occurrence or incident may affect many areas of operation.

As each type of operation employs IT solutions for its management, there is the possibility that those systems are differentiated and disparate. It might be prudent to look at SMS as a single management system embracing all operational areas for the purposes of data collection, process management, and analysis. The integration mentioned earlier between safety and quality can be extended further to embrace the whole organization served by an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution (or a similar management solution optimized for aviation organizations). This would ensure that management of safety becomes an enterprise-wide process and that all relevant inputs from the integrated software modules and a unified data base contribute towards efficient planning, managing, coordination and control of all safety related activities. Once that happens, IT will have admirably served the cause of SMS. n

A brave new world Dave Cooper, Line Maintenance Manager at BA CityFlyer on an implementation that kept the faith with technology solutions

A

lthough BA CityFlyer (BACF) bears the British Airways name it is a relatively young organisation. In the current incarnation BACF received its Air Operators Certificate on 8th February 2007 and started operations a few weeks later on 25th March.

Many of the team involved during those early days remain with the company and to a degree this still exerts an influence on the culture of the organisation and its desire to innovate.

The business has always been keen to make the best use of technology and during 2009 underwent an assessment of solutions that could improve on the

traditional paper techlog process. It was recognised that this would involve some internal changes; however, the internal business case clearly demonstrated the benefits of having techlog information captured digitally and for that data being automatically fed into the MRO system.

Having assessed what was available on the market, the team was convinced that the optimal solution was to have a computer dedicated to the techlog process and that travelled with the aircraft. They did not want a solution requiring hugely expensive aircraft modifications or technology infrastructure. The team also remained unconvinced about combining techlog

APRIL-MAY 2013 | AIRCRAFT IT OPERATIONS | CASE STUDY: BA CITIFLYER | 19 processes with the various Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) solutions available (principally because the Class 1 and 2 flight bag solutions remained with the pilot rather than the aircraft).

The company took the decision to implement the electronic techlog (ETL) from Optimised Systems and Solutions (OSyS) at the end of 2009. The solution delivered what the organisation had been looking for: • It was classified as a Class 1 solution, using the Panasonic Toughbook CF-19. This device had the advantage of being designed to MIL-STD-810G and IP65 standards which meant it was rugged. It could also be used as a Tablet PC or as a normal laptop.

• Data transmission was achieved through the mobile phone network using an internal SIM card.

Although the OSyS solution also had a number of EFB modules, the actual ETL application was distinct — therefore BACF could choose to use only the functionality it required. The ETL was designed to fly with the aircraft and the engineer completed the ETL in the same way that they completed the traditional techlog, with the application guiding the user through the process. Once the engineer had recorded and actioned any defects (recorded oil and hydraulic uplifts etc.) the ETL was passed to the captain to complete the fuel uplift, de-icing (if required) and sign the Aircraft Status and Captains Acceptance. The application was designed to require a signature from the engineer or captain at each stage of the process. The signature mimicked the paper process – which meant the actual hand written signature of the user was captured as an image using the Toughbook’s stylus as the ‘pen’. Just as with the paper process, the system did not prevent unauthorised users; it simply provided a way to indicate who had been completing the techlog.

The ETL sector information was transmitted to an OSyS website which allowed BACF users to monitor and view the data as it was received.

Taking the leap

The new solution was introduced in April 2009 and during the following months the OSyS team configured the ETL for BACF working practices; engineers and pilots were trained on the system and live trials were conducted with the CAA monitoring. The system was deployed during commencement of the BA CityFlyer fleet renewal programme in September 2009.

In general the deployment was successful and many of the hoped for benefits were attained. Principally, the data was being captured and validated which meant it could easily be used for analysis. Readability issues disappeared overnight and the techlog data was available almost immediately when transmissions worked. Regardless of any transmission issues it was significantly simpler to ensure a complete airworthiness record was maintained. any issues, and the management of Out of Phase maintenance items was also greatly simplified.

The solution was not without its challenges: • Data transmissions – several problems were experienced with data transmissions. Users found the connection and transmission process to be slow and failed more frequently than was ideal. Some of the failures were down to weakness in the mobile phone network at specific locations but many were not.

Many of our issues were self-induced by our own Telecoms Team through the chopping and changing of tariffs.

• Application usability – the ETL became increasingly sluggish to use over time. Changing from one screen to another involved noticeable delays. The problem was identified as being associated with the ever growing application database on the Toughbook.

The ‘on-ground’ support for OSyS ETL was always very good. When required, someone arrived and assisted in any software deployments. However, during three years of deployed solution, one of the key benefits anticipated from the system, the final step of integrating the data feed in the MRO System (Commsoft’s OASES), was not achieved.

Change required but no reversion to paper

During the fourth quarter of 2011, OSyS informed its two ETL customers (BACF and Thomas Cook) that they would no longer support the EFB/ETL and the service would cease at the next contract renewal date – which was May 2012 for BACF. However, OSyS was at pains to emphasise that it would do its best to find an alternative supplier and there was no desire on the part of BACF to return to using a paper techlog. The

OSyS contacted several potential suppliers to continue the service and selected another UK vendor but discussions on this arrangement did not lead to any further relationship. A decision was then made to have detailed discussions with software developer and vendor NVable about whether a viable alternative solution could be created.

NVable is a small company, which has historically focused on providing bespoke software solutions across many sectors. Many members of the team had earned their aviation stripes whilst working for CoreData and latterly being part of the Rusada Group. During 2011, the company had made a strategic decision to invest in creating its own ‘large data’ handling platform called Appixo, which was ideal for managing an application like the electronic techlog.

A challenging development program

In January 2012 an agreement was reached to create a new solution using the Appixo platform. BACF would assist during the process but the final solution would belong to NVable. Time was extremely short because a solution needed to be able to go live by May 2012.

However, several factors gave the project an enhanced chance for success: • BACF had been through the process of deploying an ETL and therefore knew what was involved from a regulatory and internal team perspective.

• The airline also owned the hardware required to deploy the solution (i.e. the Panasonic Toughbooks and the SIM cards).

• BACF had already been through the process of making software reflect their processes and therefore had very specific ideas on the design of a new solution.

• NVable was familiar with the concepts of the ETL since many on the team had been involved in the very first incarnation of one via CoreData twelve years ago.

• The vendor team were also familiar with some of the specific challenges around coding for mobile phone networks and SIM card interfaces.

That said, the challenge remained significant: although the Appixo platform provided a mechanism for storing and processing large amounts of data, the ETL application had to be developed, tested and trialled for the go live target. Even at that stage there would be one final hurdle. The project required a data migration to be performed in order to give the required history (sectors, deferred defects etc.) to the new ETLs. NVable spent time with the BACF team to understand the areas that could be improved upon from their old ETL solution. The main areas were usability, speed of the software and transmission rate (and speed). There were also some upgrades to the existing Panasonic Toughbooks that would improve the usability of the solution. The vendor’s infrastructure team worked with BACF on upgrading the hard disks to solid state drives (SSD) to reduce time taken to boot-up the system, plus the operating system was upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. Of course, the changes also needed to be tested for any compatibility issues – the team had to ensure that the upgraded component drivers did not create new issues.

With the hardware upgrades in hand the development team worked to create: • The ETL which is a Windows application that would be installed on the Panasonic Toughbook.

• The accompanying website on the Appixo platform.

• The new interfaces to allow Appixo to receive the data and to forward the data into the BACF network.

Listening to the feedback of BACF the development team at NVable paid close attention to the design of the ETL user interface and included a number of new features to make life simpler: • Controlled single sign-on across the ETL and website. After confirming the approach was acceptable to the CAA, NVable implemented a standard user/password authentication mechanism for the solution.

This gave some immediate benefits. BACF now had centrally managed and complete control over the authorised users of the overall solution.

The implementation allows for emergency authorisations (for times that the mobile data network may not be available) by using time-limited encryption to provide extremely controlled access.

• A new recovery facility. Although it is has never happened, it is possible for an ETL to have a complete failure such as a hard disk crash. In such circumstances the techlog will revert to paper to allow normal operation to continue. The recovery facility allows the transmitted history of an aircraft to be recreated within minutes and installed onto a replacement unit which can then be deployed at a suitable opportunity.

• A new ‘catch-up’ mode. To accompany the recovery mode, in circumstances where the aircraft has reverted to paper for a number of sectors (such as described above), catch-up mode provides a controlled mechanism, again using time limited encryption, for an engineer to record the paper data as it was intended. The system records the user performing the catch-up for audit purposes and the facility allows engineering to very quickly record any required sectors so that the ETL is up to date and ready for action with minimal delay.

• Enhanced transmission capability. One of the issues identified by the user base of pilots and engineers was the length of time it took to

There is no question that it was a challenge, but it is a testament to the overall team that the Go Live date of May 12th 2012 was achieved.” transmit data prior to take-off (the equivalent to leaving a copy of the techlog on the ground). As any pilot will tell you, those final five minutes are critical, and the last thing they want is to attempt a transmission that might take three minutes to complete… or, even worse, fail. The NVable team focused considerable effort on fine tuning the way the Appixo ETL establishes connections and transmits the data. The end result is that, in the vast majority of transmissions, pilots only have to wait seconds for the confirmation.

• Enhanced two-way data communication. The Appixo framework also allowed NVable to embed more capability for managing data remotely across the ETLs. This means that various data sets can be automatically sent to the ETLs in addition to the basic techlog data being sent back from the units. For example, this capability is used in the central management of users, the application of corrections etc. Generally this process is invisible to users; however, they have the ability to view the transactions if they are really interested.

• Enhanced Out-of-Phase maintenance. The Appixo ETL now provides a simpler way to manage Outof-Phase maintenance (OOP) tasks across the fleet.

Users with the appropriate authority are able create OOP templates that can be applied across one or many aircraft, or across the entire fleet. Of course, an OOP can then be changed for a specific aircraft if required.

Go Live

During the development process the BACF and NVable teams worked together to ensure that the final Appixo ETL was going to deliver all the desired benefits.

There is no question that it was a challenge, but it is a testament to the overall team that the Go Live date of May 12th 2012 was achieved. The Appixo ETLs were loaded with the current data for designated aircraft and went live at three locations throughout the day. Only minor hitches were experienced and, following a few weeks of bedding down, the overall system has been running smoothly ever since.

It is fair to say that the BACF team were surprised with the experience of implementing an IT project of this complexity. This has, in turn, encouraged them to feel confident in embracing new technology solutions. n

BYOD: a double edged sword?

Keep control with a management policy

ithout a doubt, ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is a hot topic in industry and commerce and airlines and aircraft operators have not been exceptions to this trend. The explosion in availability of tablet devices has put high grade computing power within the reach of more people than ever before in a more convenient package than was true for earlier generations of technology. But not everybody will greet this development with unalloyed joy. IT professionals are wary of it even as end users are embracing it and vendors are trying to market it. It’s a subject that’s dividing opinion, with the security implications alone causing IT Managers to wake up in a cold sweat. For airlines and aircraft operators, subject to a number of safety, regulatory, business, technology and market pressures, those implications are even more outstanding.

One thing becomes increasingly clear when you ponder the implications of BYOD. Having some type of strategy, even if it’s relatively vague, is essential.

Otherwise you’re going to start running into all sorts of issues. Slightly worryingly, recent research is suggesting that two thirds of organisations don’t have any BYOD strategy in place. Guidelines and expectations need to be set, as well as a degree of accountability.

To achieve this, it’s safe to say that BYOD and Mobile Device Management (MDM) software need to go hand in hand. MDM needs to be more than a desirable add on, it should be a pre-requisite. Any sane IT professional should have some serious reservations about a company even considering BYOD without any type of Mobile Management security tool.

When working with clients, vendors and re-sellers need to help manage expectations and formulate a realistic strategy. From the customer’s perspective, it’s crucial to understand whether BYOD is achievable, necessary and scalable. There are risks around BYOD and IT organisations need to help customers weigh up the pros and cons. BYOD is a change in mentality – not just from the user’s perspective, but also to any organisation’s IT hierarchy.

Ultimately, IT in this day and age is about promoting flexibility. It’s hard to argue with the benefits of BYOD, especially when it emphatically endorses and encapsulates the notion of flexible working. n

Some clear benefits

There is one very obvious and visible benefit of the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ phenomenon. Productivity increases. Quite simply, user’s work better and increase productivity while feeling more content with the freedom to use their own devices. Also, with a greater degree of personal ownership and personal finance involved, employees take the time to maintain their beloved gadgets. From a corporate perspective, there’s the clear cost savings attributed to decreased levels of hardware replacements.

However, the most positive aspect of BYOD is entirely intangible. Fundamentally, BYOD allow employees to interact directly with IT in a positive sense. It reflects a proactive approach from IT departments, working with the end user rather than against them. Employees want to use the most appropriate device to help them do their job. You’re the Marketing Manager? OK, use a MacBook. Work in sales? Make the most of your tablet for taking notes in meetings. In airline operations, use your device to keep up with the latest conditional information that might affect this flight or the whole service. Nevertheless, we cannot be too starry-eyed about this phenomenon.

Notes of caution

When you think about the negatives surrounding BYOD, the issue of security is never far away. Data leakage and the risk of malware are the obvious problem areas that spring to mind. Additionally, although very few people will deliberately steal corporate data, there’s always the risk of leaving a tablet, laptop, phone etc. in the back of a cab. Importantly there is some great Mobile Device Management software around that seriously mitigates the risk of data theft.

One might think this issue is as simple as deciding whether to allow BYOD or not, but unfortunately it’s not as straightforward as that. Organisations need

to decide whether to fully embrace the BYOD ethos or restrict it ever so slightly. For example, are you going to allow Android devices or just Apple? Some organisations suggest that Android’s open format makes it more susceptible to attacks, thus rendering the Google owned platform out of bounds.

Equally, where do organisations draw the line around the management and maintenance of personally owned devices? Parameters need to be clearly defined. If a device breaks, does IT fix it or is it a case of ‘take it to your usual technology retailer’? Similarly, if people have their own devices there seems to be an increased impetus to work outside traditional hours. As a result

of this, employees expect 24/7 support when they can’t log in on a Sunday afternoon.

In addition, there is reluctance on the part of some employees around mixing business and pleasure. Whilst the majority of workers seem enthusiastic to embrace BYOD, it must be noted that some individuals are happy to just logon to their work device at 9am and log off at 5:30. In this case, it’s crucial for organisations to consider who should be included in any BYOD pilot. You wouldn’t necessarily want task workers in a call centre working off iPad’s, but you may want your flight crew and operations team to have that degree of flexibility.

EFB made easy Ranga Amadoru, Deputy Chief Pilot T & S, SriLankan Airlines explains how the carrier selected, implemented and launched the first iPad EFB in an Asian airline.

T

he first EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) program at SriLankan Airlines was initiated during 2005 under the then Emirates management. At that time, the technology available for this purpose was based on commercial Laptop Solutions with Windows based software like the Airbus LPC (Less Paper Cockpit). The main disadvantages were high implementation cost, non-availability of electronic charts and restrictions to inflight use due to the lack of proper mounting technology. Also, laptops were not popular amongst Crew due to their weight and bulky design. In the end, the program was never implemented due to financial concerns and an uncertain return on investment (ROI).

SriLankan decided to retain hardcopy paper manuals for use on board aircraft and to issue the Airbus LPC to Crew in addition to their personal Airbus hardcopy FCOMs Flight Crew Operating Manuals). The LPC browser based manuals were very unpopular amongst senior Crew whereas the junior Crew preferred this system since the tiresome manual process of updating the hardcopies could be avoided. The main disadvantage was that the presentation / crew interface between the FCOMs and LPC was different and inconvenienced all crew members.

By mid-2011 consumer electronics like the iPad had gained popularity amongst a wide range of crew members from all backgrounds partly because of their intuitive operating systems, lightweight design and the resemblance to normal books or manuals when reading electronic documents. More than 50% of our pilots were privately using the Apple iPad.

App on the iPad was made available to all crew members who had private iPads. This turned out to be very popular and Crew not only used Jepp FD at home but also transferred their PDF manuals via the Goodreader App onto the iPad.

At the same time, the very costly exercise of issuing private FCOMs to crew was discontinued due to financial considerations as the prices of hardcopy manuals from Airbus kept increasing. All crew members were issued their manuals on a controlled USB Stick issued by the airline. This enabled them to refer to PDF style FCOMs and company manuals on their private PCs, laptops or other appropriate devices.

Choosing the hardware and software

Also, since SriLankan has been a long-time customer of Jeppesen, the FD (FliteDeck) App on the iPad was made available to all crew members who had private iPads. This turned out to be very popular and Crew not only used Jepp FD at home but also transferred their PDF manuals via the Goodreader App onto the iPad.

During late 2011 an Airbus Team made a routine visit to SriLankan Airlines and, amongst other things, the possibility of going digital was discussed: later on this move was approved by the airline’s Flight Operations Management. At the same time the company’s board approved funding for the EFB program as predicted costs for hardcopy FCOMs for the UL fleet were set to exceed the EFB implementation costs by 2012.

Flight Operations decided to evaluate different hardware and software solutions. Ultimately Airbus Quovadis was selected due to the OEM’s longstanding relationship with SriLankan and their experience in the approval process. Fokker Services produced an EASA approved mounting for the A320 fleet which thereby became the obvious choice. The favourable experiences of all pilots using FD was instrumental in the selection of Jeppesen as the electronic Chart provider.

We then had to select an appropriate device for the EFB in which we were guided by a number of factors. Alaska Airlines had introduced iPads to all their Crew as an electronic reading device for manuals and became the first airline to do so officially. At SriLankan many pilots were already using the Goodreader App on their own iPads to view their electronic Airbus FCOM in PDF format. And during the EFB evaluation process the iPad always stood out due to its user appeal, low cost and ruggedness. So, finally the iPad was selected as the preferred host for future UL EFB applications.

A challenging timetable

The first concern to become apparent was the timeline. Since SriLankan had committed itself to going digital, Airbus would cease delivering hardcopy manuals in 2013 however during the Airbus visit in 2011 it became clear that the FlySmart LPC version for the iPad would only become available during the third quarter of 2012. Since the airline had decided to use the iPad as a Class 1 solution initially, an interim fix had to be found. It was decided to commence a trial phase with 20 iPads on the eight strong A320 fleet, providing each Crew member with access to manuals and charts on the iPad in addition to the hardcopies that were carried on board. The iPads were to be used only on the ground and outside of the sterile flight phase above 10,000ft. During this trial period the Goodreader App would be used as the electronic document viewer and Jepp FD for the charts.

The Class 2 Solution using the Fokker Services approved mount was planned to be introduced after the six months trial period that ended in February 2013.

The EFB program required very close coordination within SriLankan.

Flight Operations was working together with IT and Engineering at a level never seen before in the organization. This close working relationship turned out to be the key in implementing the program at a very high speed. The airline went from having no clear EFB vision to commencing trial operations for the iPad within nine months, which is, to quote Fokker Services, unprecedented in this industry.

After several meetings between SriLankan Airlines, Fokker Services and CAASL (Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka) approval was granted for trial operations to commence on 29th August 2012 to evaluate the feasibility of using the iPad as an EFB. This was preceded by Fokker Services, which will be in charge of the Hardware approval process, presenting CAASL with data concerning rapid decompression and EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference). This cleared the way for SriLankan to evaluate the iPad on commercial flights.

In the meantime Quovadis selected a team to be dedicated to the airline for the overall software implementation as well as Network Server integration and approval. This team visited Sri Lanka in August 2012 for the first time to commence work on the EFB program.

Switching to the iPad based EFB

On 29th August 2012 SriLankan commenced the iPad trial operation phase and became the first Asian airline to officially use the iPad on a commercial flight. The first flight was UL205 to Muscat International Airport (MCT) in Oman, operated by an Airbus A320. The two pilots used Airbus Performance Charts in PDF format to compute the take-off performance and Jepp FD enroute charts as well as the Airbus FCOMs in PDF to validate future Crew SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) with regard to the EFB.

It had been decided early on in the program to nominate the A320 as the lead fleet for EFB. This was partly because sector lengths were less than four hours and thus a full battery charge would be sufficient to operate any flight without inflight recharging. Also the A320 fleet mostly operates turnaround flights, which was very convenient as the iPads were collected by the Crew at Flight Dispatch and returned after each flight. Since the iPads could not be securely stowed on board it was also decided to use them only on turnaround flights so that one set of Crew solely is responsible for the iPads.

The overall EFB program at SriLankan Airlines will include company iPads to be issued to all Crew by February 2013. By March 2013 the Server Installation for Airbus FlySmart on iPad will be completed and all iPads will have access to the Take Off and Landing Performance Calculation module as well as the Operations Library. All A320 aircraft will retain two iPads that can be stowed and locked inside the cockpit at slip stations. The aircraft units will be updated by SriLankan Technical Publications and maintained by SriLankan Engineering.

The Crew iPads will be used for information purposes only and not for operational purposes even though the full Airbus FlySmart software will be installed so that each Crew member can familiarize themselves with the Take Off and Landing Performance and the Ops Library. This restriction has been imposed due to possible interference with other Apps that Crew might use on their personal units and in order not to restrict Crew in the use of their units.

The Crew Training for Airbus FlySmart will commence in March 2013 and by 1st April 2013 CAASL approval to commence full Class 1 EFB operations using iPads and FlySmart on the A320 is expected.

A PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP The EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) partners in this project are SriLankan Airlines (UL), Airbus Quovadis, Fokker Services and Jeppesen.

Fokker Services have designed an EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) approved iPad Solution comprising a mount and power connection to the aircraft network with a frequency reduction from 400 Hz to 50 Hz. They are in charge of the hardware integration and work closely with SriLankan Engineering to commence installation on the A320 fleet by late February 2013.

Quovadis (an Airbus subsidiary) is assisting SriLankan Airlines Flight Operations and IT in the software integration, Network Server set up and CAASL (Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka) approval.

Jeppesen will liaise with SriLankan Technical Publications in introducing and approving JEPP FD Pro during the second quarter of 2013.

Into Service

A three month parallel run with both hardcopy and FlySmart will end on 1st July 2013, by which time all hardcopy documents, with the exception of the Jeppesen Charts, will be removed from the A320 fleet. The parallel run was reduced to three months since SriLankan is taking credit from the initial trial phase for the iPad hardware, which proved extremely reliable without a single failure being reported by January 2013. Therefore the parallel run will only evaluate the software reliability of Airbus’ FlySmart.

By 1st November 2013 the installation of all Fokker Services mounts will be completed and SriLankan Airlines will seek approval from CAASLs Airworthiness section to upgrade their EFB Solution from Class 1 to Class 2. In the meantime Jepp FD will have been replaced by Jepp FD Pro giving access to customized Jeppesen Charts like EOSIDs (Engine Out Standard Instrument Departures) on the iPads and finally enabling Crew to use the iPad during all flight phases. This approval process will be simplified by the experience gained on the iPad/FlySmart Class 1 Solution.

Meanwhile, the A330 fleet will commence Class 1 operations from July 2013 and by February 2014 the A330 fleet iPad mount installations will be completed, when SriLankan will seek Class 2 approval from CAASL for this fleet as well. Once again, this approval process will be simplified by the experience gained on the A320 and only A330 mount specific concerns will have to be addressed since the hardware/software will be identical to the A320 fleet.

The A340 fleet will remain with a Class 1 Solution for the remainder of its service life with SriLankan, since the last A340 is scheduled to be retired from the fleet by late 2015 the installation of mounts is not feasible and therefore hardcopy Jeppesen Charts will remain with the airline until replacement of the A340s is completed.

All Crew who are currently flying mixed fleet on the A330/340 will have to use the Class 2 Solution without Charts on the A330 and a Class 1 Solution with Charts on the A340. All the other EFB features will be identical.

Crew who fly mixed fleet between the A320 and the A330 will have identical EFB procedures throughout.

For the future SriLankan airlines is planning to constantly update the EFB hardware as well as software component, through frequent upgrades of Airbus’ FlySmart and an innovative hardware leasing program, which was suggested by the airline’s IT division. With this leasing plan all iPads will be replaced on a two year cycle with the latest commercially available model and Fokker Services will accommodate this process through future testing of new iPad models and modifications to their mounts.

In the future UL will be in a position to truly replace any standard hardcopy book that is carried on board now with an electronic book that is mounted on the aircraft. This is how simple EFB can actually be. n

Ranga grew up in Hamburg Germany and was schooled at a private catholic school up to my A-Levels (Abitur).

In 1998 he visited the USA to undergo initial flight training in Orlando Florida, joined Sri Lankan Airlines in 2000 as a Cadet Pilot and was checked out as First Officer on the Airbus A320 the following year.

Ranga flew the Airbus A330/340 as a First Officer from 2001 until 2008 and was appointed Ground Instructor in 2007.

First command was on the Airbus A320 in 2008 and he started flying mixed fleet as a captain on the A330 in 2010. At the same time he was appointed Instructor on the A320 and subsequently on the A330.

He became the Deputy Chief Pilot Training and Standards for Sri Lankan Airlines in 2011 and oversees amongst other new projects the IPAD EFB program.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

Alexander Zinn: Alexander Zinn, Managing Director (CoFounder), T&A SYSTEME / Logipad.

Aircraft IT: How did T&A SYSTEME / Logipad get started?

AZ: T&A started in 1994 with IT infrastructure projects for PC and workplace deployments based on a core competence in network management. In 2002 we realized an EFB project for a regional airline in Germany (LTU), because our experience in managing Laptops and Content was better than usual in the aviation market. Based on that, we optimized this case to a stable solution, especially for use as an EFB. In the following years we made investments in development and particularly in the backend of our EFB solution – from our point of view the really important part for reliable EFB operation. This also parallels our core business in IT Service Management growth.

Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of aircraft operations related Software and Hardware?

AZ: It is the overall benefit of good IT Solutions: less cost and more quality through better processes.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives T&A SYSTEME / Logipad?

AZ: Our mission is ‘leading by experience’. Driven by a high quality knowledge- and project-management ethos we realize projects ‘on time’ and ‘in budget’ while, at the end, meeting the expectations of our customers. Ask yourself: how many IT projects can be deemed successful from that point of view?

Aircraft IT: What has been T&A SYSTEME / Logipad’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

AZ: From the company side, being a growing IT company since 1994, independent of any ups and downs in the IT business. From the Logipad side, having implemented a device independent EFB solution, which saves operating costs and enhances flexibility for the airline; and in which customer satisfaction can be proved by our long term relationships.

Aircraft IT: What have been T&A SYSTEME / Logipad’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

AZ: There was a time ‘before the iPad’ when we thought that any airline needed laptops (Windows) for Class I EFBs: but they didn’t. When first we saw the iPad, we thought, that would not work properly – but we were wrong, as were most suppliers in the beginning, and underestimated the pressure of users. It was a huge task and took a significant investment, to integrate the iPad into our processes, and we lost time because of the delayed decision. All IT people really ought to take a closer look at the user and at the consumer market, which changes the known rules in IT. Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what T&A SYSTEME / Logipad does for aircraft operations customers?

AZ: Building a bridge between Pilots, Operations, and IT – because, in too many cases, IT is an isolated department.

Aircraft IT: What is new on T&A SYSTEME / Logipad’s development horizon?

AZ: There are two things. First we will optimize the briefing (moving from PDF to structured data interaction) and second we will be building an ‘EFB Cloud’ Service, where we will offer to smaller airlines all necessary IT- and Device- services, which, in larger airlines would normally be served by their own departments. So, airlines without their own (large) IT departments will be able to use iPad or Windows based EFBs. Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Operations software and hardware?

AZ: Well… that’s a question like asking about the price of a share in two years. We think, tablets (anyway iPad and Windows Pads) will replace laptops, the level of integration will rise and Cloud Computing will deliver more flexibility and lower costs.

Aircraft IT: What do you want your customers to say about T&A SYSTEME / Logipad?

AZ: T&A meets our expectation in all matters; we trust in their honest communication and appreciate their personal commitment. The project implementations run smoothly, are punctual and thorough, and up and running without extra costs.

I’ve heard that is a German virtue; maybe we should use a ‘made in Germany’ label!

The World according to IT Are we ready for metadata? And what is it anyway?

“How cool would it be if your device automatically sensed what aircraft you were on the moment you stepped on board and filtered all of your content without you having to do a thing? Or imagine if the data that the airline already knew about your flight had been preloaded to your systems and forms?”

A

good friend of mine has set himself a goal to rid the world of what he calls “dumb PDFs”.

He would like to see a future where the aircraft cockpit is not just paperless, but the data and content that we are creating and consuming is augmented by a layer of metadata that provides a wealth of additional information and drives smart functionality in the cockpit of the future. I was joking with my friend only the other day that his thinking is waaaay ahead of many airlines with whom I work.

Metadata is often described as ‘data about data’ or ‘content about content’ and although these descriptions are a little over simplistic they are explanations that will suffice for most discussions.

Metadata, I find, is more easily described by using an example with which most of us will be familiar. Consider a status update that you make on Facebook…

It will include text that you post plus there will be some sort of user identifier to link the post to your

timeline and, of course, any attached content such as images and other rich media. Behind the visible data that makes up your timeline entry there will also be a layer of metadata which is automatically gathered. In addition to your update, Facebook wants to know your location, the date and time of your update, the device you used and so on. This is all captured automatically (according to your privacy settings) and helps Facebook to build a very accurate picture of its users, their likes and behaviour…this is of great value to advertisers.

Previously this kind of data could only be captured by people with clipboards carrying out surveys.

I foresee a time where interaction with systems is kept to a bare minimum, where connected metadata drives context to our content. Imagine an EFB where you don’t need to enter any parameters to calculate your take-off performance. How cool would it be if your device automatically sensed what aircraft you were on the moment you stepped on board and filtered all of your content without you

having to do a thing? Or imagine if the data that the airline already knew about your flight had been preloaded to your systems and forms?

These micro-improvements all possible now with connected aircraft and eco-systems where metadata drives context to our content.

However, back in the world today, these ideas remain a science fiction pipedream because not enough people see the benefit of replacing systems and procedures that have remained largely unchanged during my lifetime. It’s true that the benefits these improvements bring can only be measured in seconds per flight, but the cost of developing the necessary infrastructure is astronomical. It depresses me to think that we’re stuck with paper and dumb PDFs for a few more years at least.

But wait a minute. Is it really cheaper to distribute paper than data in 2013? n

Performance Engineer – Airport Analysis The principal work for the Airport Analysis Department consists of calculating maximum takeoff/landing weights and to secure safe procedures in case of an engine failure at airports.
