Comment Smile if you think it’s over. As other parts of Europe declare the recession has ebbed, we are caught in no man’s land, do we celebrate VR day or still keep our heads down? Watching some wonderful sport recently I was surprised to see how many people get caught on the line, or do not play the full 90 minutes. Herein lies the clue; I think we should aim to over achieve. Some of the measures we have taken in the downturn will be even more effective if we continue with them past the ‘war is over’ date. The extra marketing we have conducted has been a great example for our customers not to cut back. New business won has not just bridged the gap waiting for normality to return, but added to our portfolio of happy customers, some with new requirements. New services added, our DHL parcel partnership, Spicers stationery supplies and the range of CSMA Services utility savings have been discoveries well worth continuing with. In fact some of the life saving measures during a downturn do make us all much fitter for business in any climate. Best we all ‘Carry on Marketing’ then. The CSN team has grown in recent months what with our data cleanse project, led by grandson Nick who has or will be phoning a copy shop near you soon. Please be nice to him as he waits for news on joining the RAF. Also joining our illustrious team of roving reporters is Vanessa Burrows who is a print industry guru and now available for freelance assignments. To the left of this column you will see Ness meeting Robert at Elmstok, full story on page 18. Look out for Ness visiting more of our favourite suppliers over the coming months as we get out and about to discover who is driving the recovery in print. Nominations welcome

Duplo London Calling
Duplo International has announced the UK’s premium digital print finishing event of 2009. The Duplo London Calling show, taking place at the prestigious Docklands Hilton Hotel on the 22nd and 23rd September, is aimed at print organisations looking to add real value to their print services and gain extra margins. The event will be the UK launch for three new Duplo solutions, including the new Digital System 445 and Digital System 5000PRO Bookletmakers, as well as the DC-645e, featuring Duplo’s new e-tandem remote service solution. Duplo will also be showcasing their new Ultra 205A UV Coater and market-leading DPB-500 Perfect Binder.
Alongside Duplo will be finishing partners Renz, Vivid Laminating Technologies and Kern Limited. “We are very excited about this show. It will be a relevant show at a relevant time, with the summer optimism within the industry hopefully continuing into the autumn months and beyond” comments Peter Jolly, Marketing Manager at Duplo. “This isn’t just a show about grey boxes. Whilst we will have over 20 different finishing solutions on show, we will be on hand to talk to print companies about how they can use our products to offer customers something different, whilst improving turnaround times and lowering outsourced costs. Our most successful customers have used this rocky financial period to differentiate themselves by reorganising their bindery and charging niche services at a premium price. One thing a recession is sure to do is accelerate change, and this is a show aimed at companies looking to become more efficient whilst improving their offering.” Renz will be showcasing their range of punching and binding machines from bench top through to semi automatic, ideal for any printers or finishers trying to catch a share of the Christmas calendar market. Vivid will be exhibiting EasyMount Wide Format Laminators and the New Matrix Duo and Matrix 530 Laminating systems, enabling lamination to be finished in-house. Kern will be showing a personalised envelope and letter finishing solution, the EasyMailer. “Working with our partners, the Duplo London Calling show is the place to see the finest exhibit of finishing solutions available in the UK today. We encourage all printers to invest half a day out of their busy schedules to see how our range of systems and solutions can eradicate bottlenecking and maximise the
investment of digital print.” For more information about the show and to register visit www.duplolondoncalling.com.
Konica Minolta wins three BLI awards
Konica Minolta mono multifunctionals have received recognition in the prestigious Buyers Laboratory Incorporated (BLI) Spring 2009 ‘Pick’ awards for outstanding copier-MFPs in the 41 to 69 page per minute (ppm) and 70 to 90ppm speed ranges. The bizhub 601 was awarded outstanding 51 to 60ppm monochrome MFP and the bizhub 751 won outstanding 70 to 90ppm monochrome. With output speeds of 60 and 75 prints per minute respectively, the two multifunctional bizhubs are designed for high volume black and white print output in busy office or CRD (central reprographic department) environments. Both multifunctionals offer copy and network scan usage as standard with network print, user box and fax options. Both feature the latest bizhub design of charcoal black livery with white InfoLine and a large full colour 8.5-inch touch screen display that can be both rotated and tilted to suit a desired position. In addition Konica Minolta received a BLI ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for the MyTab print driver customisation solution that allows users to save regularly used print features all on one front page of the driver. For Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK), Malcolm Smith, Group Product Manager, said “This resounding endorsement from the highly respected BLI gives prospective customers an independent assurance of the quality and performance of the bizhub 601 and bizhub 751. We are also delighted to have been recognised with an ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for the MyTab solution. Konica Minolta aims to deliver excellence in both hardware and software provision for customers.” Konica Minolta: 01908 200400 or visit www.konicaminolta.co.uk

MANROLAND GB sponsors go-karting prodigy Manroland GB has lent its support in the form of sponsorship to ambitious eight year old gokarting prodigy, Alfie Brown - recently nicknamed as Lewis Hamilton’s apprentice by the Sun newspaper, after pictures of the two appeared in the newspaper under the headline “The Master and the Apprentice”, and was also on the Formula One website. The money from manroland’s sponsorship has been earmarked to provide vital consumables such as Tyres, Oil & Fuel throughout this season and the next. The company’s branding will be displayed on numerous sections of Alfie’s competition kart, racing suit and helmet. Currently competing in the Super One national championships for the Zip Karts Allstar team, Alfie is the championship’s youngest competitor. Norman Revill, managing director, manroland GB said: “Alfie came to our attention via a colleague in the print services division and manroland is delighted to be able to support him in pursuing his ambitions. This year, we have proudly sponsored many events, organisations, causes and individuals, inside and outside of the industry, including breast cancer research, PrintIt! and PrintCity Alliance. By all accounts Alfie is a talented young driver and manroland will support him as far as he wants to go in his sport. So we would like to wish him the best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.” And Alfie’s certainly in good company at Zip Karts, whose
director and former Super Kart world champion, Martin Hines, has previously nurtured the talents of David Coulthard and the reigning Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton. Alfie’s team have attracted the attention of other motorsport organisations, which monitor their progress, including the Racing Steps foundation, which sponsors promising young motorsport talents through secondary and further education implemented by the MSA (motor sport association). Jay Brown, Alfie’s father, said: “manroland’s generous sponsorship is a welcome boost to Alfie’s gokarting ambitions and I want to thank them for getting on board. It doesn’t just support him in his sport, but educationally too, because as long as he’s involved in go-karting then there are opportunities for sponsorship through secondary and further education. Alfie’s progress has been remarkable: In the space of 6 months competing against experienced national drivers Alfie has a best novice trophy, two 1st place, one 3rd and a 5th place at the Shennington Super prix. His ambitions have gone from simply competing to setting his sights on the British championship. And with more support like that shown by manroland, he genuinely sees no reason why he couldn’t realise that ambition.” ManRoland Great Britain Ltd. Phone 020 8648 7090, www.manroland.co.uk

Long established Leicester printer Lithgo Press has installed a new Morgana DigiFold 5000P creaser/ folder to finish output from its rapidly expanding digital print section. Known principally for its high quality 4 and 5-colour litho work, Lithgo has now established a thriving digital print operation based on a Xerox 700 and a DocuColor 242. “We soon realised”, says joint m.d. John Kempin, “that we had to have finishing equipment that met the specialised needs of digital print, as well as coping better with the fast changeovers required on shorter runs.” The DigiFold met Lithgo’s requirements by being able to crease and fold accurately at speed, but in addition to using it in its dual-function role, Lithgo also make the most of its ability to act as a stand-alone creaser or perforator. “This kind of flexibility is important in a digital print operation”, comments John Kempin, “as is the quality of the finish the DigiFold provides.” For further information contact: Morgana Systems on 01908 608888

G-Print campaign Hi-jacks web to prove paper is best A promotional campaign for G-Print coated paper, devised by Swedish manufacturer Grycksbo, and now being rolled out by PaperCo, offers printers and graphic designers a bit of lighthearted support in their efforts to fight off the depredations of web-based communications on traditional print media. Itself employing the internet (with no irony apparently intended), the campaign is built around a series of 30-second video “commercials” posted on the Grycksbo website www. gprint.com/en/paperaid to which paper users are being directed. With all the subtlety of a sledgehammer (or, as one clip shows, a laptop squashing a pesky fly), the videos use simple humour to drive home the message that paper can never be replaced by computers. In six everyday office scenarios the sentiment behind the Grycksbo slogan “Paper – it’s a good thing – try it… Impossible to copy” is spelled out loud and clear as the actors have a smashing time (literally) proving its worth. Grycksbo and PaperCo hope the end-user focus of the videos – which have also been posted on YouTube – will prompt printers and designers to e-mail them on to their customers and alert them to the all-round benefits of paper and, in particular, G-Print, a matt coated woodfree stock which was re-launched last year with FSC accreditation. CARNOUSTIE AND ST ANDREWS CONFIRMED AS VENUES FOR THE 2011 AND 2013 RICOH WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN Carnoustie and the Old Course at St Andrews have been confirmed as the venues for the 2011 and 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open. The announcement was made as part of EventScotland’s 10 year partnership with the LGU and IMG to support the Ricoh Women’s British Open. The national events agency has committed to the Championship being held in Scotland on at least five occasions between 2011 and 2020. Following the success of the 2007 Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews EventScotland identified the championship as an ideal platform to promote Scotland and its outstanding golf credentials around the world. The event delivered over £7.5 million pounds to the Scottish economy and received over 356 hours of global broadcast coverage to almost 400 million households. Paul Bush, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland said, “We are delighted to announce that the Ricoh British Women’s Open will be played for the first time at Carnoustie as well as returning to St Andrews. As we build towards The Ryder Cup in 2014 and work to broaden interest and participation in golf within Scotland, we believe the Ricoh Women’s British Open is the perfect showcase for our world class courses and facilities. We are confident that the Championships at Carnoustie and St Andrews will once again demonstrate that Scotland is the perfect stage for major golf championships.” In 2011 the Ricoh Women’s British Open will be hosted, for the first time, over the famous Carnoustie Links in Angus, Scotland. The magnificent links course enjoys a well-deserved reputation as being one of the best links courses in the world and has hosted seven Open Championships to date with the latest in 2007, won by Ireland’s Padraig Harrington.

Blurb® introduces PDF to book, delivering new levels of creative control
Blurb®, the creative publishing and marketing platform that enables anyone to design, publish, share and sell bookstore-quality books, has announced the release of PDF to Book, available immediately. The new PDF to Book workflow gives creative professionals complete creative control to design books using the application of their choice, save the file as a PDF, and upload it directly to Blurb. Blurb has created pre-made templates for Adobe® InDesign® users and has developed guidelines and specifications for users of other design programs. PDF to Book gives creatives the ability to design books entirely in CMYK, while utilising native file formats such as TIFF, EPS, and PNG in the book’s contents. PDF to Book also enables the use of images when designing the book’s spine. PDF to Book workflow is available for all book sizes and cover types (Hardcover ImageWrap, Hardcover Dust Jacket, and Softcover). “Since creating my first Blurb book, I have longed for an InDesign or PDF option, and as usual, Blurb has not disappointed me,” said William Hoard, print professional and longtime Blurb customer. “For the first time, the images on the book’s cover and spine totally match their counterparts on the inside pages of my book. I know these represent technological apples and oranges, so I am doubly impressed.” PDF to Book is available alongside Blurb BookSmart®, Blurb’s free, award-winning bookmaking software for Mac and PC. Blurb recently released Blurb BookSmart 2.0, which includes new features such as flexible containers, precision toolbars, gridlines for quick visual guidance, and the ability to save designed pages as custom layouts for reuse. ANY OLD FINISHING EQUIPMENT?
Taking a leaf out of the motor industry’s book, finishing equipment manufacturers Morgana Systems are making a special summer offer to printers and trade finishers who want to get rid of outdated and inefficient machines and invest in new finishing equipment at advantageous prices. Called the Morgana Scrappage Scheme, the offer means that Morgana will knock between £1,000 and £2,000 off the price of a new Major folder or AutoCreaser in exchange for outdated or redundant finishing equipment. “The offer covers all finishing kit”, explains M.D. Quen Baum “not just old Morgana machines. Wherever possible we will put the old equipment through the factory for refurbishment.” “Like most manufacturers and suppliers” says Baum “we are looking at ways to encourage people to invest and we believe that finishing is an area that offers the printer the best opportunity for a quick payback.” For further information contact: Morgana Systems Ltd, Tel: 01908 608888

Konica Minolta launches bizhub PRO 1200 mono production workhorse
Konica Minolta Business Solutions has launched the bizhub PRO 1200 mono production print system offering up to 7,200 impressions an hour (120 prints per minute), with a maximum duty cycle of three million prints a month. The launch of the bizhub PRO 1200 extends Konica Minolta’s presence in the digital mono print market, offering customers a mid-range production system with outstanding image quality and a comprehensive range of modular finishing options. The exceptional image quality is due to two technical innovations by Konica Minolta. As the new bizhub PRO 1200 uses an LED (Light Emitting Diode) printer head, it requires fewer moving parts than a laser print head and is more reliable. Because the LED printing process is less complex, it is also more precise offering superb screening and exposure quality. In addition the Linux based high performance RIP embedded with the bizhub PRO 1200 uses advanced screening technology with a tone curve utility for customised adjustment of tone curves and screening. Substrate usage is highly flexible in weights between 40 and 350gsm. Konica Minolta’s bizhub PRO systems are designed to meet the print industry’s preferred bleed size for media of SRA3 (320 by 450mm). This allows full size A3 documents with trim marks and A4 booklets to be trimmed to size. Maximum paper capacity is 14,000

sheets from eight sources. For online finishing the bizhub PRO 1200 offers a comprehensive range of modular options with more than 40 different possible system configurations. Combinations of folding, punching, booklet making, perfect binding and staple finishing are all supported. Also available is a smart punch unit for GBC style binding that includes the availability of numerous customer replaceable die sets for plastic comb, velo bind, wire bind and so on. Large capacity trolley stacking units are available for off-line finishing. As the bizhub PRO 1200 staples and punches at the full rated speed of 7,200 impressions an hour there is no loss of speed for producing finished documents as against sheet production. Two bizhub PRO 1200s may also be linked for tandem production in high volume print environments and the system is available in a printer only variant without scanner. Importantly for the public sector and corporate customers seeking to ensure minimal environmental impact, the bizhub PRO 1200 conforms to the guidelines of the International Energy Star Program for reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency. In addition the bizhub PRO 1200 benefits from using Konica Minolta’s patented Simitri® HD Polymerised Toner with smaller, smoother, more uniform toner particles for fusing at lower temperatures and producing high
quality images. The bizhub PRO 1200 is launched with the new Micropress Version 8 which is a fast, high performance, raster based workflow solution for the mid to high volume print on demand market. Micropress is available in 3 versions Solo, Plus and Micropress Max, offering customers a sophisticated queue management and make ready tool and
giving the operator complete control of the engine and the print job. Micropress Version 8 also allows cluster printing and colour splitting of jobs. With the launch of the bizhub PRO 1200 Konica Minolta’s mono range now extends from the bizhub PRO 950 with a 95 print per minute output for light production through to the bizhub PRO 2500P, capable of generating 250 images per minute. This broad range of mono systems ensures that all customer needs for high-volume mono digital print can be met by Konica Minolta. For Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Pauline Brooks, Group Product Manager Production Print said, “The launch of the bizhub PRO 1200 clearly demonstrates Konica Minolta’s continued commitment and investment in the mono digital print market. Mono production still accounts for the vast majority of printed output by CRDs, inplant print rooms and commercial printers. The bizhub PRO 1200 has been designed as a workhorse device for customers that still have a need to produce large volumes of black and white documentation. The wide range of finishing options and the ability to handle substrates up to 350gsm make it an extremely versatile solution which will be much in demand. Black is definitely back.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

POSITIVE PAGES
Thanks to all your contributions and positive vibes we can now share some proven best practice in print.
Positive Thinking Club W
hen is the last time you made a proactive sales call? Here at CSN we are guilty of living in our email inbox and spending most of our time reacting to enquiries. Don’t get me wrong, it is great to be busy, but taking a reactive response is not choosing or targeting anything new. Our own two shops produce what we are asked for and again this is all good stuff but it is a bit like the tail wagging the dog. There is an abundance of new businesses starting up and other prospects being proactive in our local papers. I know I should contact them and offer our services but do I really have the time for any new business when I am already busy? To make a change to some more profitable business we really all need to target some less price sensitive print customers. Offering our products to help others will win work through innovation. We can’t expect our potential new customers to know how they can best use our products. Reading about other businesses activities is a good source of leads when we put ourselves, with our professional print knowledge, in our prospect’s position. How would you promote that business? Do we know any similar businesses that use print well? After 25 years in print I’m not sure of whether I have ever had any inspirational new ideas, or just plundered my memory of previous print jobs that really worked well for our customers. Fortunately CSN is a trade only magazine, so my confession is safe that far from being a marketing genius, my only claim to fame is to have started recycling copy. Having worked out which of your print products are best suited to promoting your adopted company, give them a bell. You will be pleasantly surprised that most business owners and marketeers will feel complimented you have taken the effort and invested time in their brand. Here are some of our readers tips sent in to break the ice. The best thing to do is stop staring at that screen that rules your life and simply pick up the phone. In truth a little preparation is essential:

Identify your unique selling point Consider your business’s unique selling point (USP) and prepare a crib sheet, so you can quickly communicate key benefits and features. Visit www. businesslink.gov.uk/support to view the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s guide to developing your USP. Target the right people Remember to contact existing and lapsed customers as well as potential new ones to identify any future requirements and tell them about new products and services. With new customers, it’s pointless telling someone how wonderful your business is if they don’t have the power to buy your products or services. With smaller businesses, head for the top and speak to the director. A chat with the sales and marketing managers may be the quickest route to success with larger organisations. Business Link’s Supplier Matching Service puts suppliers of business to business services in touch with each other and could help you find new clients – register for free at www. suppliermatching.co.uk Project confidence Cold calling may bring you out in a cold sweat, but it’s important to sound confident, even if you don’t feel it. Make sure you know what you want to say. Inevitably, there will be rejections, but don’t take comments personally. Remind yourself of your business’s strengths and move on to the next call. Use cost effective marketing for your own business to set a good example Are your price lists up to date? Are you displaying posters of current offers and samples of other local businesses work you have produced? Our industry needs to lead by example and to reverse a downturn we have to promote more in print, lucky we have our own print shop then! In testing times, it’s tempting to batten down the hatches, but cutting your marketing activity isn’t the best option. It’s proven that those who invest
in marketing during hard times emerge the strongest when good times return, so use your creativity to find some low cost alternatives like the ones on your own price list. Raise your online profile Check your website is doing its job – it could be your first route to new customers following up on your proposal. Make sure all your contact details are clearly visible. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is an important part of attracting more users. It boils down to having key words on your website which correspond to those used by customers when looking on search engines. You can also include a ‘links’ page with links navigating to other relevant sites. If those site owners link back to you, you’ll improve your search engine ranking. Upload new content regularly and you’ll give users a reason to return to your site and hopefully make repeat purchases. Media coverage Column inches in newspapers and magazines are no longer reserved for business tycoons and multi-national companies. Journalists are constantly on the look out for new and interesting stories so, if you can come up with a suitable ‘hook’, it’s likely you’ll get a bite from a local or trade publication. For more information about writing a press release, see Business Link’s online guide at www.businesslink.gov. uk/support Branding Your brand image creates an identity for your business and helps your customers remember you. Make sure your brand logo and contact information is on all communications they see. Networking Attend events, training seminars and trade shows to add to your database of contacts. Take business cards and follow up useful meetings with an email, direct mail shot or phone call. You can purchase data lists from show organisers, so make use of them and get in touch with anyone you didn’t
have time to chat to. Find Business Link events near you at www.businesslink. gov.uk//events Word of mouth This is the ultimate low cost marketing tool, but how can you ensure your customers recommend you to others? Try: • Ensuring your client is called every time a delivery goes out to check it arrived safely. • Enclosing a sample to pass on to a friend with every delivery12 • Giving out three business cards at a time (each with different messages on the back) to encourage a recommendation. Get your customers to buy into this for obvious reasons. • Bringing a personal face to your sales team by communicating fundraising efforts Research your customers Regular customers are important assets and there are plenty of things you can do to ensure they don’t stray. • Ask their opinions of your business. • Use customer surveys, feedback programmes and phone calls to find out why they do or don’t buy or what products they’d like to buy in future. Compile and analyse your customer database Use details of your customers’ purchases to find out which offers and complementary products they might be interested to hear about. Get permission to send email alerts or newsletters to keep customers informed. Use the web tool at www.businesslink.gov.uk/support to help identify who your most valuable customers are. Move into new markets If you want to sell your products and services to new markets, then it’s worth considering the following: • Innovate: Look at existing products and consider whether they might have any alternative applications. • Keeping an eye on market trends will give you ideas about new markets where your products might sell. National Customer Service Week Putting customer service first boost profits and staff morale – according to organisations signing up to take part in this year’s National Customer Service Week. Banks, insurers and other finance firms are among hundreds of organisations that have already registered for the week, co-ordinated by the Institute of Customer Service on October 5 – 11, including businesses that saw real bursts in sales resulting from last year’s activities. Many see the week as an opportunity to recognise the efforts of their customer-facing staff and thank them for their achievements. Inspiration for activities during the week is provided on the National Customer Service Week website which includes ideas such as job swaps between management and frontline staff, talent shows and inviting customers to nominate customer service champions.
The Institute is calling on more organisations to register for the week by visiting the NCSW website at www. nationalcustomerserviceweek.com Jo Causon, chief executive of the Institute, says: “Enterprises that aim for high service standards and recognise the talents and contributions of all their staff will motivate their people, improve customer loyalty and boost profits. “Employers increasingly understand that people with the appropriate skills and positive attitudes make a difference with their customers. Their personalities and individual qualities always shine through whether contact with customers is face-to-face, remote or online. “These are tough, challenging times and the loyalty of customers and their relationships with service suppliers are being severely tested,” Jo adds. “If customers don’t get service that is reliable, adaptable and available when and how they need it, they can quickly and easily go elsewhere.” Participants will include Manchester United Football Club, Unilever, Virgin Trains, Volkswagen, Metropolitan Police, the Environment Agency, Legoland, National Grid and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Institute research shows companies with a reputation for service excellence and committed frontline staff have a 24% higher net profit margin than same-sector rivals who do not enjoy similar standing, and can achieve 71% more profit per employee. Drytac predict strong future for the laminating industry T oday’s finishing market is sizeable, supporting many multinational/international and local manufacturers of overlaminates and adhesives. Although the laminating industry is expected to remain strong, changes in printing technology will require additional methods of print finishing which includes liquid lamination. Liquid lamination has been around for a number of years, primarily in the traditional printing industry but now is becoming an accepted and often a preferred option for those in the digital and sign industries. Drytac recognises this and has taken a proactive approach to ensure that customers have the ability to offer alternatives to their customers. Drytac are one of the key players who believe it is still important to remain committed to film laminate in order to carry forward the high quality service their customers require. Recently they invested £150,000 into an advanced pressure chambered doctor blade coating unit which aids the application of film coatings and ensures an ultra smooth finish. This is compatible with both water and solvent based coatings, enabling Drytac to continue to deliver high standards of efficiency, quality and production. At the same time, Drytac are embracing the strong future they predict in the world of liquid lamination.
Copy Shop News September 2009
With the industry guru Jim Tatum representing Drytac’s liquid coating division and the recent purchase of a major U.S. graphic liquid coating operation in June this year, the potential expected in this new technology is clear. As a result of this purchase, the second by Drytac since that of AFS in 2008, Drytac now has their own proprietary liquid manufacturing and bottling plant in Canada and are expected to replicate that in the UK early in 2010. Strong investments in both film coatings and the
new liquid lamination technology and the expansion of finishing products such as edge finishing equipment for foam boards and environmentally friendly boards such as Xanita (X Board) and Re-Board, ensures that Drytac will be at the forefront of the laminating industry for many years to come. Customers can look forward with confidence that changes in industry technology will be supported by Drytac with the latest and most advanced methods of print finishing both current and in the future.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Elmstok are recognised as a leading supplier of print finishing equipment and supplies including products such as binding, laminating and guillotines. This year they celebrate 30 years in business, a true landmark for any business in this current day and age – so what is the secret to their success?
Elmstok – 30 years strong
M
alcolm Starr founded Elmstok in 1979. A true entrepreneur and sharp businessman, he has had many other business interests running alongside Elmstok. This talent for keeping views and ideas fresh however, is something that he feels is lacking in competitor companies within the print industry at present. Being able to be flexible whilst still offering a first class service is what the company strives for, and their loyal and varied client base is testimony to that. The company started out in one building of about 2500 square feet. The initial products supplied were inks and plates for litho printers, but as the age of modern technology and digital printing dawned, they decided to focus more on the print finishing products. The product range is a variety of quality large and small format finishing equipment from
Copy Shop News September 2009
leading manufacturers such as Duplo, Ideal, Agfa, Renz, Leitz and Xyron. Popular products are laminators and laminating films in a range of finishes; binding machines and supplies including coil, wire, thermal and comb to name a few; trimmers, shredders, staplers, folders and drills; poster printer and supplies plus manual and electric guillotines. They are reknowned for being the largest stockist of channel bind machines and supplies in Europe. They also supply a massive range of pre-owned hardware of laminators, binders and guillotines that are refurbished or rebuilt to as new or very good condition sold on a first come, first served basis. It became apparent that this move was clearly the right one for Elmstok as the business grew from strength to strength. Here, an uncanny ability
to be able to predict what the market demands were, combined with ever expanding square footage in order to stock important and unusual items became apparent to Malcolm and his team, and a recipe for success. Starr explains, “In order to provide a complete and successful service to our clients, it’s all about stock. We hold stock so our clients don’t have to wait, don’t lose out on production time and subsequently don’t have to pay over the odds. It’s no good offering something at half-price when it’s not in stock!”
Loyalty and risk Present day, the company boasts over 22,000 square footage of warehousing, office and demonstration site in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. They were awarded the coveted ‘Duplo’ Diamond Dealer award two years running,
proving that loyalty goes both ways with suppliers and clients alike. Today’s market is ever changing and Elmstok are up there with the trends. Starr says, “There is no doubt that at the moment the sale of capital equipment has diminished but we have found that the growth of the pre-owned and refurbished business has more than compensated for this. “ From a broader company overview, the last 12 years has seen a steady growth of which the litho business now only denotes around 3%. The rest is in the finishing equipment and the services they supply. In addition to copy shops and printing houses, the Elmstok client base includes blue chip corporates in industry sectors such as Government, Education, Financial Institutions, Embassies and Universities. This
BUSINESS PROFILE
represents about 75% of their business and Malcolm feels is a contributing factor to their current corporate stability as it is relatively low-risk.
Location, location, location Elmstok hasn’t just widened their horizons with the type of product they sell. Where they sell to is also important. With the advent of the internet, over the last 5-6 years the company found they were receiving, and easily satisfying, orders from overseas. Global distribution to Europe, the Middle East, USA and Australia heralds another avenue that’s enabled them to keep the unstable UK climate at bay. Robert Starr runs the sales and marketing division of Elmstok, which is paramount in keeping the overall operation running smoothly. The company are currently re-designing the website and updating their inhouse computer system. This type of development will streamline working practices and ensure that not only are they themselves running as efficiently as possible, but also their customers benefit from new services that will make their life easier. The website will be easier to navigate round and feature concise and clear information about the products. They will be able to update special offers and company news regularly and provide more information about order and delivery procedures. Overseas deliveries are by leading provider UPS and links to their tracking site can also help customers keep an eye on their orders. Teamwork is important and the Elmstok team comprises both internal and external sales, administration and operations. Experienced, knowledgeable and helpful staff are the backbone of the company and have all contributed to making the running a smooth and pleasant place to work.
Helping the environment; Home and Away A new network system also signifies a reduction in paper in the office, which is an obvious environmental advantage and something that is close to Elmstok’s heart. A true pioneer in the mantra Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, Elmstok are proud to claim that they have never bought any packaging boxes in over 15 years. Just the tape. In a scheme now used by many companies throughout the UK in a bid to reduce carbon footprints, the company have long standing agreements with local businesses on the surrounding industrial estates to collect their unwanted boxes and packaging materials; businesses that include lawnmower manufacturers, electrical suppliers and paint distributors. While providing a service to these businesses they then reuse this packaging for their own deliveries. Malcolm Starr also voluntarily and properly disposed of over fifteen thousand pounds worth of spray adhesive mount rather than sell it on and allow his customers to pollute our now fragile atmosphere. As a result of this change in requirement Elmstok now supply Xyron machines that do not use any aerosol and are thus kinder to the environment. Elmstok also understand that one company’s unwanted machines can be another countries treasure and has donated vanloads of redundant stock. This stock consists of items such as plates and paper and over one hundred binding and laminating machines that may require a small amount of repairs or maintenance. Shipped out to African countries such as Nigeria, these donations aim to help companies grow their own businesses and thus provide for their own communities.
The crystal ball question… What does the future hold for Elmstok? New technologies in the form of networks and website are tools that will no doubt enhance their continued company growth in a global capacity. ROLAND
On paper, Inc Design and Display is a young company and a relative newcomer to the display market, having been formed two and a half years ago by directors Paul Byrne and Paul Hogan. But don’t be fooled: they have a combined thirty years of experience in sign production, with talents including vehicle wraps, exhibition banners, modular signs and pop-ups.
Design & Display it large
T
hey’re proud to count among their clients Dublin’s musical instrument mega-store, Xmusic, and the remainder of their portfolio ranges as broad as banner production and fascias. A more recent job has seen a large amount of vinyl banner produced for the high profile Taste of Dublin food festival. Byrne and Hogan knew that growing the company rapidly could only come from strategic investment in machines that offered productivity and excellent turn-round. “We wanted to be able to compete with the best in terms of speed and quality right from the start,” explains Hogan as he remembers the first machine at Inc Design – the Roland SolJet Pro II. The successor to the Pro II, the Pro III XC-540, handles smaller-format print-and-cut jobs at the Dublin site. Inc Design is particularly fond of the print-and-cut machine’s handling of contour cutting, making vehicle wrap production significantly easier, and eco-solvent inks mean that interior signs produced on the Pro III are odourless. After only a few months Inc Design realised that it needed to accommodate larger-format work at a greater capacity to win bigger contracts. The business partners performed extensive research, deciding finally to stay with Roland DG because the Advanced Jet AJ-1000i offered the best throughput possible with its 2.6m width complemented by durable, high quality results. The printer was installed at their premises over Christmas 2007 and it’s now in daily use for both indoor and outdoor graphics, on an ever-growing range of flexible materials. “We looked at flat-bed technology before the purchase of the Pro III, and again when investigating the AJ-1000i, but decided that roll-to-roll was the better choice, offering more in terms of output

quality and the range of compatible substrates. Additionally, this machine had a much smaller footprint and a more reasonable capital outlay,” says Byrne. Hogan explains that investment in the Roland AJ-1000i felt like the next natural step in growing the company. “Although still a very young business, we had reached a stage where we needed to expand capacity and improve turnaround times – we knew from experience that these are the key areas in which the big contracts are won.” The Roland AdvancedJet AJ-1000i is the larger of the company’s two machines, which are particularly suited to high-volume grand format printing for the durable graphics market. It is complemented by the 1.87m AJ-740i for users who want a narrower option. Its resolution of 720dpi produces near photo quality images and its ability to produce solid colours accurately makes it ideal for display producers and sign-makers. The ink formulation has an outdoor durability of up to 3 years, which can be extended with over-lamination where greater longevity is required. Inc Design’s AJ-1000i has recently benefited from upgrades to its firmware and software, bringing it in line with Roland’s latest product releases. Other key updates include the newly-designed spare ink reservoir and the ability to change the calibration of the machine while it is printing. Byrne and Hogan are quick to promote that this allows for fast adjustments, reduces media waste and prevents time-consuming stopping and starting. Amongst the first jobs that Inc Design & Display completed with its new printer was Ireland’s largest
hoarding, sited at Dublin’s Belmayne housing development. A massive 3km of vinyl film was mounted on to 2.5 x 1.25m composite Dibond panels with an anti-graffiti laminate, printed in batches of up to 600 at a time. “The Belmayne job was completed in stages over a number of months in line with the development’s progress. There is no doubt that without the AJ-1000i we wouldn’t have been able to take it on,” Byrne recalls. The automation of the RolandAdvanced Jet was a major attraction for IncDesign. Automatic maintenance and head cleaning have greatly reduced servicing and maintenance obligations, while a specialist pump keeps the flow of ink constant through the print-heads. This eliminates banding and means that cartridges can be changed ‘on the fly’. “The combination of the AJ-1000i’s speed and the durability of its EcoXtreme solvent-based ink is spectacular and its colour accuracy is superb, with easy Pantone matching when required. My favourite aspect of the machine is that it can operate unattended,” highlights Hogan. “We’ve left it printing overnight on occasion - we load up a 100 metre roll of paper and come back in the morning to find the job completed, no problem.” The AJ-1000i’s heavy-duty take-up system supports rolls weighing up to 100Kg, and Roland’s proprietary six-colour EcoXtreme inks include light cyan and light magenta for a wider gamut. The machine is happy working with a wide range of coated and uncoated media for durable, long-life graphics, and has a maximum throughput of 90 sq m/hour. “Its size and speed have opened up new doors for us and the AJ-1000i is now a core part of our business and production strategy. Both of our Roland machines are highly reliable and obviously well built, but engineers are on hand should we need them. With these two printers there isn’t much we can’t do – big or small,” boasts Byrne. Progress doesn’t stop here for Inc Design, tactical expansion is again on the agenda, with Byrne and Hogan already considering future development, including perhaps personalisation and Variable Data work for promotional items. The main thing, Hogan concludes, is to remain versatile: “There is a wealth of opportunity out there and part of our job is to keep on top of changes in the market. It’s important to be able to meet new demands as and when they arise. With its productive and diverse technology, Roland DG has certainly earned our trust in this respect.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

DIGITAL IMAGING
Eco friendly solvent printing has become one of the latest buzz phrases in large format printing. It can be confusing. Waterproof oil-based inks have been around for ages but have been eco-unfriendly mostly because the environment needed to print with them required strict ventilation safety requirements more suited to the industrial estate than the open plan copy shop. Martin Christie writes…
Importance of being solvent B
ecause the print drying or hardening process give off fairly unpleasant vapours, good ventilation is required. Even after a day or two, a new banner, for example would give off a fairly strong whiff as anyone who has left one in a closed room overnight would testify. The inks generally contain a glycolbased liquid, derived from mineral oil, and are designed to be printed on tough, non-absorbent materials like pvc and vinyl, suitable for outdoor use. The colour is a pigment – a fine powder – much like the colours in the water based inkjet printers, but in addition the brew will usually have a resin or glue to adhere the pigment to the surface. When dry, this combination is waterproof, scratch proof and fade resistant. A tough product for a variety of uses. Previously this production, by its nature, had to be done by the specialist manufacturer, but more recently, a range of printers more friendly to eyes, nose and throat has emerged, so that they can be placed in a conventional studio environment without sealed doors and extractor fans. As large format printers of any sort have become familiar tools in the digital print workspace, it becomes a serious choice whether to go standard inkjet, dye based on absorbent material, pigment inkjet which is fade free, or solvent which is virtually bullet-proof. The additional cost of the hardware may look daunting compared to the economically priced range of inkjets now available, but long term profitability on the vastly more varied products that can be produced is a serious consideration. Roland very kindly offered us a long term test of one of their new solvent machines, so we could run it back to back with our inkjets to see how it shaped up. We have about eight years experience of inkjet large format printing with five different manufacturers, so a totally new machine held no fears, and the delivery and installation took no time at all, as the key attributes of the Roland are simplicity and use. It’s big of course, the RS640 has got to be long enough to accommodate a 64inch
Copy Shop News September 2009
roll and some, so you will also need more room than that required to swing the proverbial cat. It also needs room behind, or the machine to be swung out to access the paper feed runners. Its big lengthwise, but it’s lean like an oversized whippet. There’s no excess of plastic or extraneous bodywork. This printer doesn’t have a centimetre more metalwork that it needs, so although solidly built, it is comparatively light for its size and agile on its feet. It looks simple, perhaps deceptively so, as its trim lines conceal a very sophisticated interior with a monitored heater and vacuum system that are an essential part of the media equation, which is what makes the solvent ink work. Heat is required to release the solvent and allow the colour pigment to bond to the media surface – different settings required for different media surfaces. Thermal inkjet printers, like Hp and Canon, preheat the ink, or a small amount of it, in the head before spraying the pigment carrying liquid onto the media, in order to speed the drying process. The Roland, however, uses a non thermal Epson head, solid, dependable, less to go wrong. The heating is all in the very body of the
machine and the pace of the media can be adjusted to vary critical drying time. Dry time is critical, balanced with ink coverage on different media, because the so-called eco-solvent liquids are relatively slow to dry compared to traditional solvent printers which have a more aggressive and anti-social potion – hence the unfriendly fumes. The new solvent printers are user friendly but it’s understanding that relationship between media, ink and dry time that is the critical part of print management. The faster the machine prints, for example, the more heat may be required on a given media, but with some materials the extra heat may cause buckling or bubbling which may foul the heads, so it may be a balance of less heat and slow dry. It has to be said Roland has a really good on-line back up to advise on media settings in addition to those profiles that come in the package, but we always like to try things that aren’t in the textbook, and as I often say, well are all still learning. And talking of the textbook, one of the most refreshing things on delivery of the Roland was finding a simple to follow, 120 page user guide, written in English and not translated from Chinese
by a machine, telling you most of the things you really need to know, like practical regular servicing, including manual headcleaning, that can be done by any competent boy scout. No rocket science jibberish and a serious lack of incomprehensive error warnings that all end up meaning “please refer to the manufacturer”. The Roland is designed and built to be worked by professionals and doesn’t belittle their talent by a wealth of warning beeps and bells, and automatic feeds that trash the media, or spend ages trying to correct one more millimetre. So much of the entire operation, media feed and alignment for example, is manually controlled, it’s a pleasure to have some human judgement back in large format printing. The only serious warning is reminding you to remove the two adjustable media clamps, at either end of the media, before initialising the automatic cutter. A row of gripping clamps which hold the media to the feeding rollers, is activated by one decisive lever, and releasing that stops all printing. Actually it pauses, as much as stop, as it’s actually possibly to rejoin the process seamlessly. Similarly, replacing ink cartridges is
COPY SHOP NEWS
only a minor moment in the middle of a job. It will charge a new cartridge and continue without missing so much as a drop. The fact that you can control and move the media manually means you can avoid wastage of material which is a familiar issue with large format printing. If you can’t conveniently nest jobs, to make maximum use of material, it’s the bit you can’t print on and sell that goes in the bin than eats into your profit. With the Roland you can backtrack by winding the roll back and setting a new base point anywhere along the track of the head to slot in an extra job on the same bit of media. Handling the media is an issue that needs to be considered. The manual says loading and unloading is a two person job, and certainly with heavy weight material like vinyl and pvc it is if you are loading a roll anything over a metre in length. It’s only a matter of lining the central core up onto moveable sliding holders at either end, but unless you are an orang utan that third or fourth arm comes in handy. The media edge does need to be fairly well lined up otherwise it will skew as it prints. When you may be doing banners several metres long it is important to get a straight edge or you may even cause a major crease across the surface as it is pulled through unevenly. This could foul the heads and ruin the job at the very least. To make sure the media pulls through evenly, you learn the knack of just tugging in the the middle of the front edge to judge tension and alignment. It doesn’t need much more than a light touch to straighten the whole thing, but it is worth keeping an eye on as over a
long print even a small amount of skew will develop into a significant diversion. The next consideration is where the job is going to land. As many copy shops have learned the hard way, having a big print printer is all very well, but when big prints start scuttling across the floor, it’s an issue. The Roland doesn’t feature a take up reel of any sort, possibly because if the ink isn’t drying on the media by the time it drops it could well wrap itself into one great coagulating mess. As mentioned earlier, the only thing that can really go wrong is getting the combination of print speed and dryer wrong so like the sourcerer’s apprentice, you end up with an expanding mass of wetness gradually taking over the studio floor. Without the luxury of an industrial size workbench to flow to, I found a bit of
creative use of an A-frame, and some bulldog clips a temporary solution to banners at least fifteen foot long that stubbornly refused to dry. This was initially a little concerning as it was a rush job that was to be poster pasted with liberal amounts of water-based glue. We watched a little anxiously as the client immersed an entire ten foot full colour paper banner, not that long off the printer, into a full water container and proceeded to swash it about violently to test fastness. No worries, not even a trace of ink discoloured the water. The waterproof qualities of the solvent inks were also tested at a recent festival where one of our artist customers had her Giclee prints out in a traditional summer torrential downpour. I did assure her they didn’t need varnish and
she took me at my word. We managed to try a good variety of media, as unlike inkjet paper, it doesn’t need any coating to assist bonding to the surface, if it sticks and dries, it should last. Because it isn’t coated, the solvent media is generally better value than comparative inkjet alternatives. It also handles sheet paper very well, because you can load manually, it doesn’t worry too much about size and shape, and as long as it lies flat at point of print, it won’t foul the head. Upon loading any media a magic eye will simply scan the printable area and register it in the printer set up. This along with other settings, can be read directly from the control panel on the machine, or from computer in Roland’s own RIP. More of the Roland software next month when we round-up our review of the RS640, it’s worth more words as, like the machine, it’s one of the simplest and most logical things to work to. It comes with preset profiles for known media but can be customised to adapt to anything else. It can import most rastered files or vector images, like Adobe Illustrator, can be sent to it via the Adobe print dialogue box, and any alterations in settings made at final RIP stage - effectively a hold queue which is very useful if you change your mind about printing at a particular time. It just gives you that extra chance to check that what you have sent to the printer is what you want tp print. It you’ve made a mistake on an A4 it’s not so much of a problem, if it’s a three metre banner, it’s not good. More Roland next month or if you are that impatient to find out more www.roland.dg.co.uk

ARJOWIGGINS LAUNCHES CLIMATE CAMPAIGN Arjowiggins Graphic, a manufacturer of innovative environmental paper solutions, as announced the launch of a new campaign linked to this year’s United Nations (UN) Climate Conference taking place in Copenhagen from December 7th to 18th. The extensive campaign includes a mailer and photo book – printed on leading green paper stock Cyclus, which originates from Denmark – as well as an interactive website. The conference will bring together world leaders with the aim of setting a number of environmental objectives. To correspond with this, Arjowiggins Graphic has developed a campaign to encourage printers and designers to consider the small steps they themselves can take to reduce their carbon emissions. The campaign commences with the distribution of 3,500 teaser mailers in conjunction with Antalis and James McNaughton that include background on the conference, details of the campaign and facts on the environmental credentials of Cyclus. The mailer is being sent to designers, marketing and print managers, outlining the campaign and giving them the chance to enter a competition to win a trip to Copenhagen, as well as receive a copy of a photo book entitled ‘Copenhagen Co2mmitment’ and one of 100 ‘No Co2mpromise’ t-shirts. Recipients of the mailers are also given the chance to pledge their support of the UN Climate Conference. Signatures from across Europe will be collected and handed to the Chairman of the UN Climate Change Conference during December. The photo book, printed on Cyclus, includes unique shots of the people and sights of Copenhagen taken by four photographers exclusively for this campaign. It has been designed to show a Copenhagen that is vibrant, lively, full of vitality and with amazing spirit, providing alternative views of the city from new and refreshing angles. The mailer and photo book are supported by a website – www.cyclus.dk/co2 – which includes campaign details, facts about the unique environmental credentials of Cyclus and the option to follow the project with a Copenhagen Co2mmitment Face book page. Angela De Vorchik, UK Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic, comments, “As Denmark is the home of Cyclus this event has provided a great platform for us to communicate the environmental benefits of using a paper with leading green credentials. Our aim is to encourage customers to think about the small actions they can take to reduce their own carbon footprint whilst highlighting the big steps world leaders are taking to address climate change.” Arjowiggins Graphic will also be partnering with Responding to Climate Change (RTCC). RTCC’s latest publication will be printed on Arjowiggins Graphic stock and distributed within the welcome pack to all 15,000 delegates at the conference. The partnership also includes branding on the RTCC website and interviews with the Arjowiggins Graphic team on www.climate-change.tv.

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
Maximising workflow with a CAD-Cutter assisted swing-away type model, a versatile piece of equipment that allows for custom platens, to handle odd shapes such as bags gloves and hats.) Other equipment and supplies you’ll need include the media itself (the material that you will be cutting) as well as squeegees, masking material, weeding tools and scissors. Consider bin storage below the table to hold these supplies. For a one or two person work area, consider arranging your equipment and supplies in a “U” shape. At the base of the “U” is the cutter, with a 2m table to the right, and the computer on the far left-hand side of that table, next to the cutter. The rest of the table is used for weeding and masking. Your configuration may be different depending upon your particular needs, but the goal is to keep everyone working with no waiting, and a minimum amount of wasted energy in between tasks. Employees shouldn’t have to walk anywhere to reach their weeding tools or to find masking material, for instance; it should be all within arm’s reach.
Tips to maximiSe efficiency
Adding new equipment to your business is an exciting undertaking. It represents new business opportunities, the potential for new customers, and, hopefully, new levels of profitability. All of this is especially true with cutters and printer/cutters, which present such enormous decorating potential. If you’re adding a cutter or printer/cutter to your business, get ready for an influx of new types of orders, and get the business ready to handle those orders by laying out your new equipment in the most efficient manner possible. But before moving any new equipment into the business, you’ll need to give some serious thought as to how you’ll physically arrange it, and doing that requires understanding how the work actually flows through the decorating process.
Go with the flow With cutters, everything begins at the computers, where the design is created, manipulated and prepared. That said, you’ll want to keep the computer as close as possible to the cutter. On some units, the controls are on the right; by placing the computer on the right side of the unit, near the controls, you can easily reach over to the cutter’s controls while staying seated at the computer. If you’re using a printer/cutter, you’ll first print the design onto the material; if your unit is a conventional cutter, then you’ll obviously skip this step. After the unit cuts the design, you’re ready to weed away the excess material. Next, you’ll mask the design by laying onto it a piece of clear, adhesive material – it looks rather like a huge piece of Scotch tape. Bend the adhesive material in the middle slightly so the middle hits the design first, which will help you avoid air bubbles. You then need to run a squeegee across the adhesive material to push out the air, the first pass lightly, then a second pass with additional pressure. Leave the protective backing on the weeded and masked designs so you may stack them up and take them in bulk to your heat press area. This is a more efficient process than actually applying each design as you weed and mask it, because you’re grouping together similar tasks rather than jumping back and forth between dissimilar ones. Use a cart if needed to move those pieces over to the heat press area. Then, after the garments are decorated with the designs, they can be folded, stacked back into the cart, and rolled over to the packing/shipping area.
The work area With a firm understanding of the workflow process for your cutter, you can lay out equipment in the most efficient way possible. Ideally you’ll designate a 3m x 3m area for your cutter, giving you ample room to operate the unit comfortably. Embellishers with spacious production areas might be tempted to allocate even more room for their cutters, but that’s not necessarily a good idea. A compact work area translates into efficiency by putting within arm’s reach the tools and supplies you need to stay productive. You’ll also want a table nearby for weeding and masking; a standard 1.5-2m library type table should provide plenty of room. Devote your cutter area strictly to creating the designs, and handle the application of those designs using the heat press in another part of your premises. In all likelihood, you’re already doing other types of heat transfer work, so there’s no need to move the heat press into your cutter area. (By the way, if you’re just now purchasing a heat press, consider at least a 40x50cm press so that you’re able to handle a larger variety of sizes. Also, consider an air-

Of course, getting the most out of your equipment means more than just putting it in the right place: It’s also about using it intelligently. For example, when the design is at the unit being cut (or print and cut, as the case may be), the most efficient thing for you to do is to busy yourself elsewhere, with another task, such as weeding and masking designs you’ve cut previously, rather than watching the unit and waiting for it to finish. Other tips for increasing productivity include: • Be specific – Make sure every job has an order sheet with all necessary information including due date; file name; image size and location; type of garment and so on. • Chunk it up - Break up runs on roll stock into manageable chunks. For instance, if you have a uniform order for 200 pieces, you might send only 50 at a time to the cutter. This allows you to check quality on the run midway instead of at the end, and you can busy yourself with weeding and masking while the next batch is at the cutter. • Keep it manageable – Depending upon your production volume, the length of your design groupings on the cut material will vary depending on the designs and jobs themselves; you should avoid sending designs through your system that total more than a metre of material at once. Keeping segments of material at this length will prevent them from getting so long that they become difficult to physically handle. You can always “tell” the cutter to cut pieces automatically so that you don’t have to do it by hand using scissors. The pieces will then either drop onto the floor or into a catch basket (desirable, depending upon your situation and housekeeping). • Weed smart – Whether or not you should weed designs one-at-a-time or in groups depends upon the designs themselves. If you’re doing large ones, you’ll probably want to weed one-at-a-time instead of fighting with a large piece if material with multiple designs. If you’re doing say 24 tiny ones, you could weed them all at once. You should develop a feel for the right approach in this instance, knowing what’s manageable and what’s too cumbersome. • Weed different – For some designs – especially smaller ones – you might find that it’s actually easier to weed after you’ve done the masking rather than beforehand, That’s because much of the weeding will happen as a result of the masking itself, leaving you with less actual weeding to do manually. Any time you’re doing a new order, try this reverse method first; if it doesn’t work, go back to the conventional sequence of weeding first, then masking. • Gang up on them – Printers/Cutters typically use white media so there’s no need to change out material for specific colours. However, you will need to change it based on the type of fabric you’re decorating. For example, you’ll use one type of material for polyester and another type for Nylon. For maximum efficiency, group jobs that use the same type of material so you’re not constantly changing it out on the cutter. Likewise, gang up smaller jobs so you’re cutting numerous designs at once, not just one or two. Be careful, though, as you don’t want to inadvertently put the wrong design on the wrong substrate – a relatively easy mistake to make when you’re batching together designs from different orders. • Think BIG – For large runs, you may want to use a cold laminate, a piece of equipment familiar to those in the sign industry. This unit puts an extra protective clear layer on top of the film. For decorating purposes, you would weed the designs then run them through the laminator with the mask on top. This route is faster for large runs than using a squeegee, and it can provide better, more even coverage, thanks to consistent pressure. Whether you’re equipped with a printer/cutter, a simple cutter, or multiple standard heat presses, like most aspects of your business, creating the ideal system for workflow is often a matter of trial and error, so try these suggestions and see what works best for you. With just a little experimentation and some careful evaluation, you can create a workflow that gets the most efficiency and profitability out of your equipment of choice. It’s in the post – Al Tube! Printers and copy shops are reinforcing relationships with customers and protecting printed goods at the same time with a new range of postal tubes from rose plastic. The modern, attractive postal tubes, which are available in a full range of sizes, are ideal for protecting customers’ artwork, posters, brochures, calendars, maps, drawings, wall art...the list is endless. Craig North, UK Sales & Marketing Manager for rose plastic, explains: “Customers are finding these postal tubes offer the very best possible protection during transportation, storage or display, for everything from artwork through to architectural drawings. Their uses are endless and their popularity is being reinforced by the wide choice of sizes, colour choices and the branding options. They really are the most attractive and practical way of packaging many types of printed material.” Lightweight and user-friendly, the postal tubes are designed to minimise postal costs and be very easy to handle, with contents immediately visible. Rose plastic’s postal tubes are transparent, as standard, but are available in a whole range of different colours to suit customer preferences. They can also be customised with corporate logos to reflect a company’s brand identity. Manufactured from water-resistant Polypropylene (PP), all tubes are fully recyclable, as well as being extremely durable and user-friendly. These postal tubes have a much improved appearance over cardboard and they also have the advantage that there is no need to fasten the end caps in place, making assembly time much quicker.
For enhanced security during transportation and storage, these postal tubes also feature a screw thread, which ensures they fit securely together. The introduction of the rose plastic postal tubes follows the huge success of its innovative VarioPack VP range. These premium range document carriers have all the benefits of postal tubes, but with the addition of a handy adjustable carry strap, available from stock. Variable length adjustment is also possible with VarioPack VP and VPN, due to the option to include an extension with a slide bayonet fitting, which fixes positions securely and means all sizes can be created. Like the postal tubes, the document carriers are moisture, oil and water resistant, to ensure the contents are given maximum protection during transit. Each document carrier is also available in specific lengths and colours, with branding options available to suit customer needs. rose plastic UK Ltd is a leader in the production of plastic packaging and supplies a wide range of industries, from cosmetics to cutting tools, promotional gifts to motor sport. NEW PROFIT CENTRE
Kick-off a new poster business Thursday 10.30am in a South Coast copy shop when a call from the famous BHAFC came in. “Can you supply seven perimeter board posters printed in colour both sides 10ft x 2ft x 6in. Plus three even bigger ones for the entrance to the ground?” “Yeah no probs , when do you want them?” “They need to be in position for our first home game against Walsall this Saturday”. Who you gonna Call? Well it’s not what you know…it’s who you know and thankfully we called on Colin at Coles Copying, as a happy Hammer he is used to being put in the proverbial by your local football club. As a contingency and required R&D to report back in these pages, we ran some on our LFP inkjet and sent most by email to Coles Copying for fast production on the revolutionary KIP Color 80. OK the race against time was on, Toner versus inkjet. Martin, our CSN
intrepid LFP reporter set about rearranging our beta test room to accommodate huge banners in “thick” colour streaming out at various speeds. The Roland quality was really exceptional but with drying times we would miss the kick off. We quickly learned how to hang out the posters to dry then and trim on a hastily cleared plan chest. The split production plan would work if Coles could make the TNT courier on Thursday afternoon with the bulk of our order. Well done Colin, delivery 10am Friday and all trimmed and ready for our mate Daz to show us how to paste up and hang big posters. Coles trade pricing for this job enabled Colourfast to win this business on a changeable poster display we

Foul Smell
4th Place
A printer, a salesman and a designer took part in an international competition to see who had the greatest ability to endure foul smells. Each of them had to share a cage for as long as possible with an extremely smelly customer. The printer lasted three minutes, The designer lasted four minutes. Then the salesman went in, and after five minutes the customer came out. .
A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at a branch of Sainsbury’s but she couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked a passing assistant, ‘Do these turkeys get any bigger?’ The assistant replied, ‘ I’m afraid not, they’re dead.’
3rd Place The policeman got out of his car and approached the boy racer he stopped for speeding. ‘I have been waiting for you all day,’ the bobby said. The kid replied, ‘Yes, well I got here as fast as I could.’ When the policeman finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket.

It was mealtime during a flight on a British Airways plane: ’Would you like dinner?’ the flight attendant asked the man seated in the front row. ’What are my choices?’ the man asked. ’Yes or no,’ she replied.
2nd Place A lorry driver was driving along on a country road. A sign came up that read ‘Low Bridge Ahead.’ Before he realised it, the bridge was directly ahead and he got stuck under it. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The policeman got out of his car and walked to the lorry’s cab and said to the driver, ’Got stuck, eh?’ The lorry driver said, ‘No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of petrol!’
5th Place A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without blinking an eyelid she said, ’Sir, I need to see your ticket not your stub.’
1st PLACE: SMART ARSED ANSWER OF THE YEAR 2009 A teacher at a polytechnic college reminded her pupils of tomorrow’s final exam. ’Now listen to me, I won’t tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that’s it, no other excuses whatsoever!’ A smart-arsed guy at the back of the room raised his hand and asked, ’What would happen if I came in tomorrow suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?’ The entire class was reduced to laughter and sniggering. When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, ’Well, I suppose you’d have to write with your other hand’.

said the guard. The Cyclist did as he was told, emptied the bags, and proving they contained nothing but sand, reloaded the bags, put them on his shoulders and continued across the border. Two weeks later, the same thing happened. Again, the guard demanded to see the two bags, which again contained nothing but sand. This went on every week for six months, until one day the cyclist with the sand bags failed to appear. A few days later, the guard happened to meet the cyclist downtown. ”Say friend, you sure had us crazy”, said the guard. “We knew you were smuggling something across the border. I won’t say a word — but what is it you were smuggling?” ”Bicycles!”

Taking flight A man takes a seat on an aeroplane. Settled in, he sees a strikingly beautiful woman boarding. To his delight, she takes the seat beside him. Eager to strike up a conversation, he says, “Business trip or holiday?” She smiles and says, “Business – the annual sex convention in New York.” The man swallows hard. Struggling to maintain his composure, he asks, “What’s your role at the convention then?” “Lecturer,” she responds. “I use my experience to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.” “Really,” the man says. “What myths are those?” Well,” the woman explains, “one popular myth is that African men are the best endowed, when, in fact, it’s the Native American Indians. Another misconception is that Frenchmen are the world’s best lovers, when in fact men of Jewish descent are the best in bed. We have, however, found that the best overall lovers are the rednecks from South America.” Suddenly, the woman becomes a little uncomfortable and blushes. “I’m really sorry,” she says, “I shouldn’t really be discussing this with you. I don’t even know your name.” “ Tonto,” the man says. “Tonto Goldstein. But my friends call me Bubba.”

3 wishes A woman was out golfing one day when she hit her ball into the woods. She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap. The frog said to her, “If you release me from this trap, I will grant you three wishes.” The woman freed the frog. The frog said, “Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes that whatever you wish for, your husband will get 10 times more or better!” The woman said, “That would be okay.” For her first wish, she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog warned her, “You do realize that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis, that women will flock to.” The woman replied, “That will be okay because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will only have eyes for me.” So, KAZAM she’s the most beautiful woman in the world! Roy Evans: You have to finish above everyone to win the league, Richard. ”It’s now 1-1, an exact reversal of the score on Saturday.” (Radio 5 Live) ”Football today, it’s like a game of chess. It’s all about money.”, NEWCASTLE UNITED FAN, Radio 5 Live. ”I don’t believe in luck... but I do believe you need it.”, ALAN BALL ”Merseyside derbies usually last 90 minutes and I’m sure today’s won’t be any different.”, TREVOR BROOKING ”Dumbarton player Steve McCahill has limped off with a badly cut forehead.”, TOM FERRIE ”And I honestly believe we can go all the way to Wembley...unless somebody knocks us out.”, DAVE BASSETT ”What makes this game so delightful is that when both teams get the ball they are attacking their opponents goal.”, JIMMY HILL
