Xerox Scientists create Computer Language to interpret more than 50,000 ways to describe colour technology, Xerox opened an interactive demonstration in an online test lab called Open Xerox. In the demo, users can change colour in specific areas of a photograph without needing to use complex editing software. While scientists at Xerox continue the research, a version of the technology now is available as the Colour By Words feature of the newly-announced Xerox Phaser® 7500 colour printer. “You shouldn’t have to be a colour scientist to get the right colour where you want it,” said Karen Braun, herself a colour scientist at the Xerox Research Center Webster (N.Y.). “We created a tool that is as natural and as easy to use as simply describing what you want to change. The tool allows customers to meet ever-tighter deadlines by bringing colour printing tasks in-house, right to the desktop.”
Translating Complex Colour Attributes
Scientists at Xerox have taken the concept of “paint by number” to a whole new level with the release of a technology that translates detailed human descriptions of colour – such as “brilliant yellow” - into mathematical algorithms that tell a computer how to edit that specific hue. The ability to use easy-to-understand
phrases such as “Make the blues a lot more vibrant,” or “Make the skin-tone colours slightly more warm,” to adjust colour in specific areas of an image has far-reaching implications for today’s office worker, graphic artist, printer or photographer. To demonstrate the capabilities of its new Natural Language Colour
To develop the Natural Language Colour technology, Xerox colour scientists used special measurement instruments (called colorimeters) to associate numbers with specific attributes of light or dark, colour name and vividness. Specifying an exact colour name for a set of numbers is no simple task because there are many ‘fuzzy edges’ when it comes to describing colour. For example, when does blue become ‘greenish blue’ or ‘bluish green’? Is there a difference between the two? Braun’s team of colour scientists,
engineers, and work-practice specialists studied focus groups to learn how people describe and distinguish between different colours as well as different shades. People were surprisingly consistent with each other in their use of colour language. “Xerox performed thousands of experimental observations to ensure that the phrasing accurately adjusts the colours,” she said. “With more than 65 words in its vocabulary, the software can create over 50,000 possible colour variations of the user’s picture.
Colour adjustment exactly where you want it Unlike current colour printers and applications that use wheel or slide colour editors offering limited changes to brightness or contrast across the entire image, Xerox’s technology can alter the colour in specific areas of the image without affecting the rest of the document. The proper instructions are sent to the printer and the resulting image is printed. You can test drive the technology in French, Spanish, Italian, English, and German by going to Xerox’s technology web portal at www.xerox.com/open. In the future, Xerox plans to expand Natural Language Colour technology to more printers, multifunction systems, and other Xerox workflows. Xerox also plans to showcase additional technologies at the Open Xerox web portal for visitors to try out. www.xerox.com

and a mixture of customers made up the Mondi Allstars team. “It was another successful turnout from our customers to support Color Copy on its 20th anniversary as the leading colour laser paper, with the Mondi Allstars team looking to better previous years performance,” enthused Brod Geary, UK Sales Area Manager for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. The round robin provided some interesting results with Antalis Leeds notching up a 17-1 win over Antalis Dartford. The ODs were looking to gain revenge over their defeat in the final last year, but unfortunately, were knocked out in the round robin stages. The semi finals consisted of Antalis Birmingham versus Premier Minworth, where after full time the score was level and the result was determined by a nail biting penalty shoot out where Premier Minworth were victorious. The other semi final was Antalis Leeds versus HSP which was a close match but reigning champions saw off the opposition in a 5-1 finish. The final was Antalis Leeds versus Premier Minworth, where Antalis Leeds made full advantage of every opportunity and won 5-0. “We always look forward to the Mondi Color Copy 5 a Side Tournament and to win it again and to be player of the tournament is a great honour,” said the winning team captain John James of Antalis Leeds Awards after the tournament were given to the winners and runners up as well as an award for most improved team as nominated by the referees and this was given to Antalis Birmingham. Player of the Year was awarded to John James from Antalis Leeds. www.mondigroup.com

Integrated Graphics takes delivery of first Konica Minolta bizhub PRO C65hc
Integrated Graphics Ltd has become the first Konica Minolta customer to take delivery of a bizhub PRO C65hc digital production print system. Based in Barry, South Wales, Integrated Graphics acquired the bizhub PRO C65hc for high quality digital colour print. The bizhub PRO C65hc, is Konica Minolta’s first high-speed digital colour system to use the revolutionary High Chroma toner, designed to simulate the colour palate of an RGB monitor using CMYK print process. This is because the bizhub PRO C65hc produces a wider colour gamut than a conventional colour digital engine. There is an improvement in the middle of the colour gamut, but the most noticeable difference is at the edge, where vividness is greatly increased. The bizhub PRO C65hc has an output capacity of up to 3,900 pages per hour (65 pages per minute) in both full colour and black and white. Media weights up to 300gsm thick can be used for simplex print or 256gsm for perfecting print output. Printing on substrates up to SRA3 (320 by 450mm) allows output of full size A3 documents with trim marks and A4 booklets trimmed to size. The accuracy of the output can be judged by the 0.5mm registration tolerance (per side) for perfecting production and sheet-to-sheet. Integrated Graphics’ is a dedicated digital print solutions provider and the company’s commitment to quality and environmental standards is demonstrated by its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations. Commenting on the order Adrian Hickey, a Director of Integrated Graphics said, “The superior quality of the output from the bizhub PRO C65hc was obvious compared to other machines. The test runs we saw showed excellent colour control with a flat, low gloss feel to the toner that was more like litho than conventional digital output. The vibrancy of the colour gamut confirmed our decision to order the bizhub PRO C65hc.” For Konica Minolta, Clare Revell, Head of Production Print said, “The quality and vividness of the colour output from the bizhub PRO C65hc has created a lot of interest in the market. That interest is now converting into orders and the Integrated Graphics installation is likely to be the first of many.” Konica Minolta, 01908 200400, info@konicaminolta.co.uk, www.konicaminolta.co.uk

GP INVESTS IN FINISHING FOR GROWTH
Investment in finishing is seen as the way forward for GP Print of Peterborough which has just installed a DigiCoater UV coater, a DigiFold 5000P creaser/folder and a KB2000 perfect binder from Morgana Systems. This follows the purchase, a few months ago, of a CardXtra, a Foldnak bookletmaker and a collator from the same company. Primarily a trade print operation, GP Print has taken the view that in the current climate investment in finishing is the best way towards achieving the ambitious growth targets it has set itself for 2009. “Our decision”, says partner Peter Martyr, “has been vindicated by an encouraging uplift in business from customers who want to add value to their products through a range of finishing options. Naturally, it also streamlines finishing the output from our own Heidelberg 2 and 4-colour presses and our Presstek 34 DI as well. GP is especially hopeful that the micro-format DigiCoater will add a further revenue stream both by improving the quality of its finished work and by offering a greener alternative to laminating as output from the coater is both recyclable and biodegradable. DUPLO INCREASES BOOKLETMAKER RANGE WITH ALPHA SADDLE
Duplo International has further extended its range of bookletmakers by introducing their first ever automatic saddle stitcher, the Alpha Saddle, in what can only be described as their most important product announcement of recent times.. Capable of producing over 6,000 64 page booklets an hour, the Alpha Saddle is also able to produce a staggering 12,000 booklets an hour when fitted with the optional gutter cut knives. These high production speeds are achieved by using the unique Automated Precision Control or A.P.C. set transfer units. Unlike any other flat sheet collating system on the market, the transfer units have the ability to transport 2 complete sets simultaneously onto the saddle. High production speeds are also maintained when feeding from the higher capacity DC10/60 Pro collating towers. Productivity is further increased by allowing any incomplete sets to be automatically diverted without stopping production. Terry Wafer, Graphic Arts Product Marketing Manager comments “We have been working extensively to produce and perfect a saddle stitcher. This project has taken 3 years of hard work and research together with our technical department. It is an asset to our range and encompasses everything we expect from a Duplo machine.” As with the other bookletmakers in the Duplo range, the Alpha Saddle also has a modular approach. The patented system consists of a DC10/60 Pro collator, set transfer unit, a scoring and folding section, saddle stitching section and three knife trimmer. Due to this unique design, further towers and set transfer units can easily be added as a business grows. The DC10/60 Pro towers can be arranged in a number of parallel and series configurations to suit both the customers jobs and space requirements. In addition, the heavy duty construction of the Alpha Saddle enables a continuous and accurate book production from 4 to 200 page books, which is suitable for users who do in excess of 100,000 books per month. The Alpha Saddle is capable of producing books from a range of both digital and litho papers up to 300gsm in weight. The design of the Alpha allows for an extensive range of book production, from books as small as 90mm x 95mm right through to 353mm x 305mm – providing the printer
Copy Shop News November 2009
with a vast booklet portfolio, with the ability to produce everything from small pocket books up to A4 landscape publications. Automatic Precision, like with all Duplo bookletmaking systems is a key feature of the Alpha saddle, allowing the operator to automatically set up all of the book parameters including the folding pressure within 60 seconds, which increases productivity and reduces wastage. Accessing each job from one of the available 100 job memories is both simple and easy to perform via the touch screen control panel. The Alpha Saddle has been designed to use JDF data programming and connectivity is also further enhanced by allowing the customer to add their existing DC10/60 Pro and DC10/60 towers as well as the DSF 5000 sheet feeder. “The Alpha Saddle has been designed to future proof businesses with the ability to integrate into a production print workflow and receive job tickets based on the international standard JDF format, enabling automated job set-up from data captured at the pre-press stage. Printers who have implemented JDF-enabled automation report impressive savings in materials and labour, as well as reduced cycle times and better visibility of operations for managers and customers alike.” Comments Peter Dyson, Product Marketing Manager for Digital Finishing. “Everything about the Alpha is about saving time and therefore cost. For example, once fitted, the gutter cut option on the Alpha can merely be switched off from the touch screen panel, unlike some other saddle stitchers where you have to remove it every time it is not needed and store it appropriately.” States Wafer. “Due to its design, the Alpha Saddle allows for excellent operator visibility and easy servicing access to all working parts, ensuring productivity levels are maintained with downtime and costs kept to a minimum.” Adds Wafer. The Duplo range of bookletmakers starts with their entry level DBM 120 and continues with the DBM 350, then the DBM 500 and now finishes with their top of the range the Alpha Saddle. The Alpha Saddle can be further enhanced with optional extras including 6.35mm and 9.5mm gutter cut knives, ISG cold gluing system, DSF 5000 digital sheet feeder, an additional 2 hohner stitching heads, loop stitching and a hole punch unit. www.duplouk.com

Konica Minolta launches innovative bizhubs Konica Minolta has launched three mid-range multifunctionals with a series of technical innovations for improved performance. The bizhub C220, bizhub C280 and bizhub C360 offer 22, 28 and 36 prints per minute respectively in black-andwhite or colour. Network print, copy and high-speed network scanning are standard features with optional fax functionality. For printing and copying the bizhub C220, C280 and C360 are equipped with one of Konica Minolta’s powerful Emperon™ controllers, featuring a fast 1GHz CPU (667 MHz on bizhub C220), 2Gb memory, a 250Gb hard drive, and standard PostScript 3 compatibility. Document scanning is fast and simple with the new bizhubs. Multi-page documents can be scanned automatically at up to 70 originals per minute to email, FTP, SMB and user box. Scan formats include PDF, searchable PDF and compact PDF, XPS and compact XPS as well as TIFF and JPEG. The huge memory capacity allows scanned documents to be easily stored at a full 600dpi resolution in colour. With the increased need for environmental conservation, bizhub C220, C280 and C360 have typical electricity consumption (TEC) values that are amongst the lowest in their class. The systems switch to energy-saving mode faster and consume considerably less power in sleep mode than previous models. This eco-friendly operation also helps to save running costs and keeps all three models well within the latest regulations of the Energy Star and the German Blue Angel standards. Thanks to the bizhubs’ comprehensive access control features, colour functionality can be restricted if necessary to allow only authorised users to produce colour documents. Standard password authentication reliably limits system access to authorised users. For fast and accurate access, Konica Minolta has an Advanced Biometric Authentication system that reads the finger vein, an innovative alternative to the standard pin-code authentication. The new bizhubs comply with the latest international security standard ISO 15408 EAL3 for data security. They are also equipped with a complete security package, including IEEE 802.1x network access protocol, to keep critical information safe. Paper capacity ranges from a standard 1,150 sheets to a maximum 3,650 sheets
EPSON LAUNCHES NEW STYLUS PRO 7700 AND 9700 PRINTERS
Epson technology is renowned for delivering fast, efficient printing. The Epson Stylus Pro 7700 and 9700 are designed to produce faster output without compromising print quality, by using advanced compression and decompression technologies that speed up data during printing. Morgana Launches New Range of UV Coaters Versatile punching & binding systems for wire, comb and coil
Digital finishing specialist Morgana Systems Ltd has launched a new range of micro-format UV coating systems that, according to M.D.. Quen Baum, “will make in-house UV coating a realistic and profitable proposition for smaller printers.” There are two new models in the range, both suitable for digital and litho work and both compatible with all current ink print technologies. The first of these is the DigiCoater 33 which takes a 33 cm wide sheet and, priced at only £17,990. is seen as ideal for the digital print market where output from most print engines is SRA3. With a very small footprint, the DigiCoater 33 comes with three tanks and a coating roller and is fitted with integral auto wash. It provides a choice of gloss or matt coatings on line and can be used for UV coating or priming, but not both. It has the latest touch-screen technology for simplicity of operation and can be supplied with an optional Digi-IR unit for printers working with wax-based toner systems. “Priced as it is”, says Quen Baum, “and offering quality gloss, matt or textured finishes, we believe the DigiCoater 33 will be very popular with smaller printers wanting to add value to their product.” The larger DigiCoater 50 – taking a 50cm sheet – is aimed at printers producing both digital and litho work and, priced from just £27,490, is significantly cheaper than earlier DigiCoater models. It is available in two versions; one with four tanks and two coating rollers and the other with six tanks and three rollers. In addition to providing a range of gloss, matt or textured UV finishes, the DigiCoater 50 will also apply a coat of aqueous primer to uncoated media. It comes with a wholly automatic clean down system. Another outstanding feature of this new coater is a “turret” feed system that dispenses with the need for feeding stations of different heights and allows rollers to be simply and quickly changed for different types of work without manual removal and replacement. “Air Knife” technology to facilitate the removal of lightweight papers is now fitted as a standard feature. As with the smaller model, the DigiCoater 50 has an easy to use touch screen and can be supplied with an IR unit for wax-based toners. Morgana recommends that both the new coaters should be externally vented but where this isn’t possible a new X-Tractor unit – fitted between the feeder and coater – can be provided as an alternative. Morgana has also developed a range of feeders for its new DigiCoater series. Morgana Systems 01908 608888, www.morgana.co.uk

Lightning Source hosts residents from Beaverbrook House
Lightning Source, an Ingram Content Group company and on-demand printer recently welcomed a party of 34 from Beaverbrook House, the sheltered housing complex owned and run by the Printers’ Charitable Corporation (PCC). Lighting Source UK is based in Milton Keynes. The visit was organised by Michael Johnson, Chief Executive of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and the PCC’s President who welcomed the visitors with the words: “You are seeing the future today.” The party was made up of retired printers living at Beaverbrook House in Bletchley, who were shown around by Lightning Source’s staff. It was an opportunity for them to see how much had changed and how much has remained the same in the printing industry. Mr George Dowrick, who worked for nearly 40 years in the printing industry as a platemaker and typesetter, commented: “The thing that struck me most was how clean the air-conditioned plant is and there’s no overpowering smell of ink or the white spirit that we used to clean the rollers with. Printing has changed so much but it was interesting to see some of the processes haven’t.” The bookbinding section was of great interest to Mrs Margaret Ireland, who started her apprenticeship as a bookbinder when she was 14. She recalls that the entire bookbinding process in those days was done by hand, including folding and collating the pages. “Bookbinding was a skilled occupation and I loved every minute of it,” she says. “Now, virtually the entire process is mechanised.” The group returned to Beaverbrook House for lunch where Stephen Gilbert, the PCC’s Chief Executive thanked Dave Piper, Managing Director and Terry Gridley, Operations Director of the Lighting Source UK operation. The group asked that Dave and Terry pass on their thanks to all the staff at Lightning Source for making them feel welcome and sharing their knowledge. Dave Piper adds: “Lightning Source UK was delighted to host this visit for the Printers’ Charitable Corporation and our staff, many of whom have a traditional print background, were extremely proud to conduct the tours of our facility in Milton Keynes. We were particularly pleased to support a charity that represents retired printers. I thoroughly enjoyed hosting the visit and will definitely be taking up the kind offer of a reciprocal visit to Beaverbrook House in the near future.” For further information about PCC contact Stephen Gilbert, 01293 542 820, email stephen@printerscharitablecorporation.co.uk

Illustrated Stationery adds an Acuity-shaped string to its bow Founded in 1984, South Wales-based Illustrated Stationery prides itself on fulfilling customer orders, whatever the request. Its 30,000 ft² of production space houses a wide variety of print technologies including digital, flexography, rotary letterpress, silk screen, lithography, thermography, hot foil, embossing, die cutting and laser cutting. With a staff of 50, Illustrated Stationery is well known for its wedding stationery, printing virtually all of the invitations and wedding favours for one of the most well-known suppliers of wedding stationery, Confetti. Alongside this, Illustrated Stationery runs a successful label printing business, with contracts for many of the UK’s leading supermarkets. Despite housing all these diverse technologies under one roof, Illustrated Stationery felt that it was still missing some capability in the way of a wideformat device. As Paolo Scaglioni, managing director of Illustrated Stationery, explains: “More and more of our customers were requesting unique jobs printed on more ‘exotic’ materials. And, with jobs such as wedding
Copy Shop News November 2009
stationery, you’re talking about relatively short runs of usually about 100. Add to this, the growing requirement for one-offs such as themed table plans and we knew that there must be a technology out there to provide cost-effective but high quality print to meet these requirements.” Paolo Scaglioni explains: “We looked at several wide-format inkjet devices on the market with a view to assessing which provided the best quality output.” One of the devices Illustrated Stationery looked at was the Acuity Advance from Fujifilm, a wide-format
printer with a white ink option capable of printing onto substrates as thick as 48mm. Paolo continues: “We arranged a demo of the machine at Fujifilm’s HQ in Bedford and were very impressed. The quality of the output was excellent and it provided the option of printing with white ink, something that none of the competitor devices did. We sent some black substrate up to Bedford before our arrival and asked the demo team to print on it in white which they duly did, ready for our arrival, and we were very impressed with the results.”
The Acuity Advance series of wideformat devices print directly on to a wide variety of rigid or flexible media at printing resolutions of 1440 dpi or higher with a true production speed of 22.2 m²/hr. Using FUJIFILM Sericol’s Uvijet series inks, the Acuity Advance has a flatbed measuring 2.5 x 1.25m, with the Acuity Advance X2 providing a double-sized print bed of 3.05 x 2.5m. The imaging technology of the Acuity Advance allows each print head to produce variable size droplets, producing sharp and crisp images when jetting fine droplets (as fine as 6 picolitres), and delivering denser, more uniform solid areas when jetting larger droplets (up to 42 picolitres). The next challenge for Illustrated Stationery was to drum up business to ensure maximum value from the Acuity. As Paolo explains: “We obviously already had some work that we wanted to produce on the Acuity, mostly jobs that we would have printed using silk screen before, but we wanted to make sure customers knew that we had this new string to our bow in the shape of the Acuity.

PRINT DEVELOPMENT
In today’s ever changing print market place, the difference between success and failure isn’t just measured by the amount of hours you put in to keep your customer happy and deliver his job on time. It’s about the relationship that you have with each other for the mutual benefit of both your businesses.
Profit in print N
owadays, it’s less about plant lists and whether you can print B1, B2 OR B3, litho, digital or screen and have a team of sales reps zooming around the countryside in their shiny company cars, the buyers don’t care!! What they really want is for their print supplier to deliver on quality, price and service and a lot more besides. Today’s print buyer wants innovation, support and access to tools and methods that will make his or her job easier. In today’s business environment it’s about fully understanding your customers’ needs and goals, the structure and culture of their organisation and the market sectors they operate in. It’s about what you can really do to help and improve their business, by effectively and efficiently improving their work practices, route to market, marketing communications and ultimately, their bottom line. Digital print and solutions such as web-to-print, variable data printing, TransPromo and cross media marketing are now coming to the fore to assist in this. These applications, aligned with advanced and more cost effective finishing methods, have changed the printing world forever. They are opening up huge opportunities for the traditional high street printers and copy shops who have realised that to be really successful, you either need to adapt the way in which you manage your existing customers and develop new business, or die. To a certain extent, the walk-in trade that was once the main stay of customer relations, turnover and profit generation has migrated on to the internet. With the new generation of buyers, who now purchase practically everything on-line, from music and videos to clothes and holidays and homes to furniture, buying print is no different. In fact, it’s probably a whole lot easier. What is different though is the way traditional ‘commercial’ printers now have to interact with their existing customers and prospects. Gone are the days when an account review or an introduction was to ‘pop in for a coffee’ if you just happened to be in the area. Buyers now have less time on their hands than ever for ad-hoc impromptu visits from a sales rep and are demanding more formal business meetings and presentations with a mutual agenda. Over the coming months issues, we will be bringing you a range of articles that will help you to develop your business, by understanding the true benefits of digital printing from both your perspective and that of the customer. These articles include:
1. Selling the benefits of digital printing - Seeing it from your customers viewpoint 2. Selling digital print – Solution selling v commodity selling and the benefits you could reap 3. Selling print the consultative way– Why is the best salesperson not actually a salesperson? 4. Digital print finishing - Like most things in life, It’s not where you start from, but how you finish! 5. Understanding your customers business – You can’t make money from printing business cards alone, but why are they so important? 6. Time is money right? 3 questions that will determine the value of a prospect and focus your sales effort 7. Culture change – Selling the solution not the printed sheet. Diversify or die? 8. Key personalisation solutions in today’s print market place – Photobooks, Calendars, greetings cards and up-selling more related products. 9. Personalisation – Is it really valid in today’s market place? 10. TransPromo - The next big thing in print 11. Build your business on incremental growth, not on high value one offs 12. DIGITAL IMAGING
It has become fashionable, rather than creating something entirely new, to simply give it another name in the hope that it will be seen with new enthusiasm - something more exciting and interesting than an older label that has perhaps become tired and outdated in the mind of the consumer. Is it time to re brand the Copy Shop? Martin Christie wrties…
What’s in a name? I
t’s a tempting ploy, rather than risk re-inventing the wheel simply give it a new coat of paint and a modernsounding name — Eco motion device — perhaps, to grab the attention of a potential customer. Long ago, in the last century as was, we nailed the title to this magazine at a time when we really did copy things. It is maybe a little dated now we may go for days without lifting the lid on a copier, and we have considered alternatives, but what simple description would sum up what we do in a compact phrase? Digital Print Shop would seem the obvious choice, but this now covers such a broad range of services as everyone uses digital technology in one form or another. In fact if you use a search engine to find digital printers its likely the first names you will come up with are all photographic printers, who of course no longer print photographs, but mainly digital reproductions. Type in copy shops and you are still likely to get straight to the high street locations you are looking for. No matter how he carries it, hard original or electronic file, the customer’s perception is still predominantly that what he wants is a copy. I raise this because another new title has slipped quietly, and almost unnoticed into industry jargon, print service provider. Well while this may seem like a neat little acronym, and is certainly comprehensive, it surely must cover everyone right down to the person that plants the tree, and the driver that delivers the paper. More than that if you try PSP on a search engine – it’s going to be a long way down a very long list headed by Sony’s PlayStation. Not the most practical title then, though I appreciate that those who thought it up had the best intentions of styling the service up to date. The issue, which I have raised before, is that there is so much more now involved in that apparently simple operation of transferring information and image to paper that nothing short of a small paragraph would encompass it all. You may be familiar with the scene — a queue of customers at the counter when the inevitable mobile phone twinkles into life, to be answered by the equally inevitable “Hello, mate!” — why is everyone at the other end of
Copy Shop News November 2009
a mobile called mate? it must make the owners phone book very confusing — followed by “I’m at the printers”. It always makes me smile because we are invariably at that time, not merely printing or copying, but trying to recover something printable from some jungle of files on a memory stick filled with assorted tunes, video clips and general
phone downloads, as well as a virtual herd of word documents, jpegs and the odd PDF. It’s like saying you are at the chemist when the poor pharmacist, instead of passing over a simple prescription, is attempting open heart surgery on your vital organs. What a wonderful clinically clean world the creators of print service
providers must inhabit, one where word documents never re-flow, where fonts are always embedded, files are the right size and resolution and attachments are always attached. They don’t have to wade through the blood and gore of digital detritous that we do on the shop floor. They would certainly have been at Total Print Expo this very month. It’s
I have to put my hands up and say I was well and truely spoofed by HP this month. Having been singing the praises of the so-called eco-solvent inks, I mentioned that they had decided not to pursue this liquid brew and instead develop printers using Latex solutions. All I could find out about on the product side was the industrial sized L65500, and it appeared they didn’t have an immediate answer for the consumer market. A virtual news blackout covered the launch of the new L25500, designed for small- and medium-sized sign and digital print shops, and aimed directly to challenge the user-friendly solvent machines. Instead of the battleship like proportions of its bigger brother the L25500 has been shoe-horned into a regular HP designjet profile, using six colour inks and is available in 42 or 60 inch media widths. The media is front loaded in classic HP style. Latex refers to “a non-allergenic synthetic polymer developed especially for inkjet printing,” according to HP’s senior technical specialist. It’s mostly water with colouring to put it simply with various other bits in solution to help it bond to the surface when heat is applied. Like the solvents it emerges waterproof, scratch proof and prints on self-adhesive vinyl, banner media, film, fabric, paper, mesh and HP latex-ink matched specialty materials. The Latex properties are said to be more flexible and prevent cracking on the surface of media, thus making them very suitable for vehicle graphics or any application involving shapes. The inks are non-flammable and non-combustible, and require no special handling or workplace ventilation as they don’t give off any fumes. The water based solution is bonded to the varied media by heat. Output is also claimed to have an unlaminated exterior life of three years. Having spent several months with the latest eco-solvent Roland, I shall be very keen to get my hands on the HP Latex to see if it lives up to its claims, most especially speed and drying time. HP use both thermal heads and a separate heater to dry the ink on the media, as opposed to the Roland which just has a heater (which isn’t always needed). Drying time with solvent inks is very dependent on media type and ink coverage. Where black is made from composite colours for example, it can be some time before a print can be handled, cut or mounted which can be a major problem for print on demand where speed can be a priority. There is no doubt HP are planning a major assault on the eco-solvent market with this and future latex machines. They will not replace, but run alongside conventional inkjets, as the quick drying wide colour gamut printers have their own marketplace, but being able to produce posters and banners, small or large, that don’t need laminating, and on a variety of material, adds a whole new service to the high street. An interesting aspect which may have more long term marketing value is recyclable media. HP has a range of 19 substrates for the L25500, six of which are new and seven of which are eligible for the firm’s free ‘takeback and recycle’ scheme. Under the scheme, HP will arrange the take-back of any eligible HP-supplied media. The machines will sell in the UK from £16,000 so are comparable with eco-solvent alternatives. Things could get interesting, watch this space.
DIGITAL IMAGING
on my handy CSN wall calendar right opposite me as I write, except that that is the only place it exists. Perhaps there is a connection there between a description that fails to truely describe, and an exhibtion that failed to live up to its expectations. A total print service provider show would need half the halls at the NEC complex, not half one hall at Olympia. Now that would be something. It is given that there is no one showcase that completely covers all the many aspects of the current copy shop. I try and cherry pick events that are going to be useful. In early days, as a
photographer just turning digital, when I introduced myself as representing Copy Shop News, I got curious looks at photography events, and similar views at printing ones. What had digital imagery to do with photography or printing? That was before the electronic eye invaded the high street and every living room, and the issues regarding the quality and quantity of pictures became apparent at the print face. While the manufacturers who supply our hardware concentrate inevitably on the output, it is the input from our customers that is the unpredictable
factor — far more than any mechanical gremlins in the printers. About four or five years ago, I think it was at Olympia, I asked the nice people at Canon why, amid their impressive array of large and medium format photographic quality printers, there was no digital camera. As they were also one of the leading brands in both technologies this seemed an oversight. Not at all, it was simply a different part of the company. It’s a lack of joined-up thinking that cripples any industry, and it’s even more crucial when times are tough. It’s not enough to be a provider, you have to be
pro-active in anticipating and advising what the customer really expects. Well Canon have finally taken the plunge and launched their own mini Expo combining cameras and printers along with other hardware and software, and I’ll be reviewing it next month. Admittedly it drops into a slot in the calendar previously occupied by Nikon who sadly have chosen not to continue their very busy Solutions event, for this year at least. Canon are shadowing this popular event with “Pro Photo Solutions” so we shall see if it lives up to its name.
A little bit of cut and paste
This month’s little bit of photoshop magic involves a simple bit of traditional cut and paste matched with a bit of thinking off the square digital photography. As usual it is created by a desire to do something good, quickly and cheaply for a customer - the three things not often in combination. But we like a challenge sometimes The customer has a business with Bamboo in the title and wants to give a nice natural look to a shop wall with a large poster or banner with the plants featured. It is possible to buy stock images of suitable quality from photo libraries off the internet, but the average price of these is about £300, depending on usage - far more than the budget for the whole project. So how about photographing some real bamboo with a high resolution camera ? We don’t grow a lot of bamboo on the south coast but the customer says there is some at the shop and will bring some in. I think I was expecting a bit of a bundle, the sort of thing I could arrange into a small water garden display that Alan Tichmarsh would have been impressed with. When three single pieces arrived I could see it wasn’t going to be quite so simple. But there is always a way round things. Cut and paste is an old skill much mastered in the copy shop, but often more of a problem on the computer when trying to match multiple images to make them realistic. Colour hue, exposure, relative size and perspective can vary, making the job far more time consuming than is really justified. So to make my job easier I did the most important part of my cut and paste operation in camera. It’s a simple technique I used to use with film, using multiple exposure of one image or sandwiching several negatives in printing. Try explaining that to a photographer who only knows Photoshop and their eyes glaze over, but with a digital camera it couldn’t be more straightforward. Three or four snaps taken seconds apart, same exposure and colour balance. But the important bit is the camera doesn’t move - the subject does. To be absolutely accurate I would mount the camera on a solid tripod to be sure not even the trace of movement would affect the image, but in this case a steady hand is sufficient, while with the other I just move the bamboo across the lens eye view for each shot. The individual layers are then pasted into one multi-layered Photoshop document. A neutral light blue background is easily removed from additional layers with the magic wand, and duplicate layers are created and flipped horizontally to give a bit of variety in shape. A veritable forest of bamboo created from a few strands in about ten minutes.

PEFC marks 10 year anniversary
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC)** is celebrating the occasion of its 10-year anniversary in France with the erection of the first sustainable French billboard, high above the city on a rooftop situated near the “Porte de Clichy” in Paris’ 17th arrondissement.
Based on an idea by Cedric Peiffer, a 20 metres high billboard and 3 tonnes structure will be on top of the building for a two-year period from September 2009-September 2011. The billboard uses plants to spell out the letters and message, “For our Forests”, and the address of the blog dedicated to the
Arjowiggins Graphic, a manufacturer of innovative environmental paper solutions, announces the launch of a new brochure campaign targeting 10,000 printers and designers which highlights the environmental benefits and excellent printability of its Cocoon Silk 50 and Cocoon Gloss 50 range. The brochure entitled ‘A New World’ incorporates photography themed around skin, the environment and nature; all printed on Cocoon Silk 50 and Cocoon Gloss 50 stocks. Images included in the brochure demonstrate the excellent print quality of the range as well as promoting its environmental message. The brochure, being distributed by Cocoon merchants James McNaughton and Antalis, also incorporates full details of the range’s sustainability credentials and the reduced impact that using Cocoon has on the environment. The aim is to provide advice on how printers and designers can promote their environmental processes by
adding eco-signatures to their printed documents, outlining the green credentials of the paper and printing technologies used. Angela De Vorchik, UK Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic comments, Papers such as Cocoon play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of printed work. We realise the importance of communicating this message in a creative way to effectively engage with printers and designers. The brochure has been developed specifically to raise awareness about the benefits of using recycled papers in a way that is both eye-catching and provides practical advice. Cocoon Silk 50 and Cocoon Gloss 50 are manufactured using 50% recycled and 50% FSC virgin fibres. Cocoon Silk 50 and Cocoon Gloss 50 offer bright white shades with a high quality, smooth surface and outstanding printability. Cocoon Silk 50 is available in weights ranging from 90-400gsm, while Cocoon Gloss 50 is available from 115-300gsm.

PEFC letters and plant cultivation. Some 200 plants have been used to form the four letters of PEFC. All the materials used have been selected to maintain the environmental integrity of the project. Hence the use of plants, PEFCcertified timber, rainwater recovery, low energy lighting etc. A community communication channel or blog has also been developed to mark the occasion and a video will also be broadcast on the internet and various websites. Stephane Marchesi, National Secretary of PEFC France commented, “The more consumers choose PEFC-certified products, the greater the incentive for responsible forest management. Therefore it is important that the PEFC logo can be recognised by as many people as possible. This is why PEFC France will communicate its message for two years with this unique, living billboard.” PEFC is an international association, created in Europe in 1999. Its aim is to encourage sustainable forest management around the world through its forest certification programme. With members in 35 countries, PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification scheme. In France its membership is drawn from the National Office for Forests, Private Forest Owners Federation, ENGO, Wood industry, etc. Some 45,000 forest owners are PEFC certified in France and more than 1,500 companies have a PEFC chain of custody. Konica Minolta supports the UN’s Climate Change Conference 2009
Konica Minolta has been selected as a main partner for the UN’s 2009 Climate Conference COP15 (the 15th Conference of the Parties) and will provide more than 30 bizhub colour multifunctional printers (MFPs) and monochrome production printing systems, with a total value of €2 million. Equipped with state-of-theart technology, the bizhub document imaging systems will meet the printing, copying, scanning and faxing needs of all participants from the UN and delegates prior to and during COP15. Konica Minolta has several programmes to minimise its impact on the global environment, such as its Zero Waste initiative and complies with the ideals of the UN climate convention. These factors were decisive in the selection of Konica Minolta as a suitable partner for the conference, hosted by Denmark from 7 to 18 December 2009 in Copenhagen. “It is a great honour for us to support COP15 as the main sponsor of copying and printing machines,” says Olaf Lorenz, General Manager, International Marketing Division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe. “We have already made major progress in developing eco-friendly devices with low energy consumption. However, we will definitely not rest on our laurels, but will continue to be ahead of the print market’s environmentally sound developments. Being part of UN’s Climate Change Conference takes forward our efforts to constantly minimise our ecological footprint.” Svend Olling, Head of Department at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adds: “COP15 could be the largest international political conference ever held on Danish soil. As the host, Denmark’s responsibility is to provide the best possible negotiating conditions for the delegates at COP15. The sponsorship agreement with Konica Minolta is an important element in providing an efficient infrastructure at the conference venue. Furthermore, we are satisfied that the solution offered by Konica Minolta aims to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible.” Konica Minolta’s comprehensive environmental management is ISO certified and its MFPs qualify for the Energy Star rating. These systems consume about half the power used by standard devices. One of the latest models, for example, has a TEC (typical weekly energy consumption) of about 60 percent below the latest Energy Star requirements. This makes it the most eco-friendly MFP in its class. Last year, two of the company’s devices earned the Energy Conservation Grand Prize for Excellent Energy Conservation Equipment of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for being highly efficient and environmentally sound. Recently the company also signed the UN’s Global Compact agreement. This initiative aims to solve various increasingly serious issues such as global warming, environmental concerns and social disparities by encouraging each participating company to fulfil sustainable growth and development. The Conference of the Parties takes all major decisions in worldwide climate negotiations. Its objective is for COP15 to result in a solid global agreement that establishes ambitious goals for a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Up to 15,000 official participants are expected to take part in the conference, including government representatives, journalists and members of international organisations and non-governmental organisations. UPM Shotton was officially awarded its Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development by Her Majesty’s representative Lord Lieutenant Trefor Jones CBE at the newsprint mill on Deeside Industrial Estate, early in October. In a short ceremony the President of UPM’s Paper Business Group, Mr Jyrki Ovaska and General Manager of UPM Shotton, Mr David Ingham received a rose bowl to mark the achievements the newsprint mill has made towards sustainability. The paper mill, which is the UK’s largest producer of newsprint made entirely from recycled newspapers and magazines, and generates its own electricity and steam from paper making residues, was praised for having achieved the highest standards of sustainability throughout its business operations. UPM Shotton was granted the award as recognition for outstanding performance in environmental sustainability and its positive impact on the local community. Mr David Ingham, said: “I would like to express my thanks to our customers, our suppliers, the local authority and community groups, as well as our regional and national government representatives for their support and guidance. These long-term constructive relationships have underpinned this achievement. He adds: “Finally, I would like to offer my warm congratulations to the UPM Shotton team. The Queen’s award for Sustainable Development is recognition of the determination, hard work, loyalty and skill they have shown and will continuously improve on into the future.” Mr Ingham and Mr Ovaska were joined by customers, employees and local stakeholders for the event during which a celebration cake was cut by the Lord Lieutenant.

How to Decorate Difficult Substrates with Heat-Applied Graphics If there’s anything worse than turning down a job — and potential profits— it’s turning down a job when you know you could’ve done it if only you had the right tools. Fortunately, saying no to difficult substrates is something that you can avoid less and less, if not altogether, thanks to ground-breaking new products and heat-seal equipment.
Improving Technology Heat-applied graphics and heat-seal presses have come a long way since their humble beginnings. Technology has dramatically improved the quality and durability of transfers to the point where they’re equal to, if not better than, screen printing. Print-and-cut technology also has benefited from technology improvements, including the ability to print a full-colour design on white media and cut it so it’s ready for application. What does that mean for you? It means there’s no waiting for a custom order from a contractor or having to invest in screen printing equipment. Further, new materials developed specifically for print-and-cut technology give you more decorating options, including the ability to decorate water-proof nylon, 100% polyester, and super-stretchy materials such as Lycra® Spandex.
The Right Tools Your first step in eliminating the headaches once associated with difficult-to-decorate items is to find the right equipment, starting with your heat press. While clamshells and draw-style heat presses have their benefits, a swing-away press is ideally suited for challenging items because it keeps heat away from the workspace, making layout extremely easy, and
Copy Shop News November 2009
it locks down from over the centre onto thick items, giving a better seal. What’s more important than this design consideration, though, is finding a swing-away press with an open throat design, which allows for clearance underneath the bottom platen; the base of the press is affixed toward the back, not in the centre. Why does this matter? Let’s say you’re decorating a golf bag. You’ll want all that extra space underneath to let the bag hang off. Finally, for the most hasslefree decorating experience with the most space underneath, look for a press with a stand (as opposed to a tabletop configuration), sized at least 40 x 50 cms. When choosing a swing-away press, look for a fully digital unit, which will give you digital time, temperature and pressure measurements, giving
you more precise information while decorating. For instance, every time you set the knob to a particular PSI (pounds per square inch) setting on a digital unit, you’re assured of getting the same pressure as the previous time. If you don’t have a swing-away press, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to tackle difficult-to-decorate items; it just means the job will be tougher than it needs to be. If you try to tackle the items anyway, set up your press so you have as much clearance as possible underneath. Another critical feature for difficult-to-decorate items is interchangeable platens. For example, a 15 x 25cm platen works well for baby shirts, youth garments, small jerseys and bags. Other standard platen sizes include 20 x 25cm and round 18cm, which works well with roll bags that have circles at either end, or umbrellas. Custom platens also are available from suppliers for around £125 and a two- to four-week turnaround; they can even make a single custom platen to accommodate two items. Decorators may want custom platens for fold-up chairs, leather portfolios, luggage, lunch cooler bags, and other challenging items. Most suppliers will request that you send in the item or items that you want to heat press and they will custom manufacture a platen to do the job. In addition to the item, they also need to know the make and model of your heat press. For high production situations, a custom platen can make a huge difference in efficiency and productivity as workers spend less time positioning the item on the press and then taking it off.

10 sales ladies and a printer Eleven women were clinging precariously to a wildly swinging rope suspended from a crumbling outcropping on Mount Everest. Ten were sales ladies, one was a printer. As a group they decided that one of the party should let go. If that didn’t happen the rope would break and everyone would perish. For an agonising few moments no one volunteered. Finally the printer gave a truly touching speech saying she would sacrifice herself to save the lives of the others. The sales ladies applauded.
Two Salesmen Go For A Walk In The Woods One sunny afternoon, two salesmen were walking through the woods. While they were on the trail, they came across a set of tracks. The first salesman said, “Hey look, deer tracks!” The other salesman said, “Those aren’t deer tracks, they’re bear tracks.” While they were arguing over whether they were bear or deer tracks, they got beeped by a train.

51 Days A bartender is sitting behind the bar on a typical day, when the door bursts open and in come four salesmen. They come up to the bar, order five bottles of champagne and ten glasses, take their order over and sit down at a large table. The corks are popped, the glasses are filled and they begin toasting and chanting, “51 days, 51 days, 51 days!” Soon, three more salesmen arrive, take up their drinks and the chanting grows. “51 days, 51 days, 51 days!” Two more salesmen show up and soon their voices are joined in raising the roof. “51 days, 51 days, 51 days!” Finally, the tenth salesman comes in with a picture under his arm. He walks over to the table, sets the picture in the middle and the table erupts. Up jumps the others, they begin dancing around the table, exchanging high-fives, all the while chanting “51 days, 51 days, 51 days!” The bartender can’t contain his curiosity any longer, so he walks over to the table. There in the centre is a beautifully framed child’s puzzle of the Cookie Monster. When the frenzy dies down a little bit, the bartender asks one of the salesmen, “What’s all the chanting and celebration about?” The salesman who brought in the picture pipes in, “Everyone thinks that salesmen are dumb and they make fun of us. So, we decided to set the record straight. Ten of us got together, bought that puzzle and put it together. The side of the box said 2-4 years, but we put it together in 51 days!”
A salesman diet A copier salesman is terribly overweight, so his doctor puts him on a diet. “I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you’ll have lost at least five pounds.” When the salesman returns, he’s lost nearly 20 pounds. “Why, that’s amazing!” the doctor says. “Did you follow my instruction The salesman nods. “I’ll tell you, though, I thought was going to drop dead that third day.”
A man was sitting on the sofa watching TV when he heard his wife’s voice from the kitchen.
“From hunger, you mean?” asked the doctor. “No, from skipping.”
A salesman in the field A salesman is driving down the road in the country and spots another salesman in a canoe, in a wheat field, rowing like crazy. He slams on the brakes and rolls down the window and yells to him, “What are you doing? You’re in a field! “ The salesman stops briefly to listen and then returns to rowing like mad. Angry because he’s been ignored he yells again, “Hey! Stop that! You’re making us salesmen look dumb.” Ignored again the salesman in the car yells,” You’re lucky I can’t swim or I’d come out there and kick your ass!”

Pre Press exam The digital print salesman reported for his front end final examination that consists of “yes/no” type questions. He takes his seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration takes his wallet, removes a coin and starts tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet Yes for Heads and No for Tails. Within half an hour he is all done whereas the rest of the class is sweating it out. During the last few minutes, he is seen desperately throwing the coin, muttering and sweating. The moderator, alarmed, approaches him and asks what is going on. “I finished the exam in half an hour. But I’m rechecking my answers.
Hair colour doesn’t matter A blonde saleswoman goes to a store. She asks, “How much for this T.V?”
“What would you like for dinner Love? Chicken, beef or lamb?”
The owner responds, “Sorry, we don’t give service to blondes.” The saleswoman leaves and comes back with her hair dyed blue. She asks, “How much for this T.V?” The owner responds, “Sorry, we don’t give service to blondes.” The sales woman leaves and comes back with her hair dyed black. She asks, “How much is it for this T.V?” The owner once again responds, “Sorry we don’t give service to blondes.” The saleswoman, frustrated, leaves and comes back bald. She asks, “How much for this T.V?” The owner responds, “Sorry, we don’t give service to blondes.” The saleswoman screams, “How do you know I’m blonde!!” The owner responds ,”Because this is a computer.”

Pepsi’s “Come alive with the Pepsi Generation” translated into “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave”, in Chinese. 8. Frank Perdue’s chicken slogan, “it takes a strong man to make a tender chicken” was translated into Spanish as “it takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate.” 9. The Coca-Cola name in China was first read as “Ke-kou-ke-la”, meaning “Bite the wax tadpole” or “female horse stuffed with wax”, depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 characters to find a phonetic equivalent “ko-kou-ko-le”, translating into “happiness in the mouth.” 10 When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to have read, “it won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” Instead, the company thought that the word “embarazar” (to impregnate) meant to embarrass, so the ad read: “It won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.”
