PrintMeIt.com remove finishing bottlenecks with Duplo
County Durham based digital printer printmeit.com have invested in a raft of new Duplo finishing equipment to satisfy a rapidly expanding order book. Adam Chetter, Managing Director puts the company’s success down to a combination of quirky local promotions, a diversified offering including print and design services and a strong web presence. Established just three years ago, the business now employs six people and has just relocated to larger premises to accommodate all the new kit. Amongst its recent purchases were a Duplo DC-445 creaser, Ideal 4850 guillotine and Duplo DBM-120T bookletmaker and fore-edge trimmer. Adam explained the reasons behind the investment, “It’s quite simple really “We started out three years ago with a basic Xerox printer and some small manual finishing kit. As our workload increased we just weren’t able to keep up and quality was suffering. It got to the point where we were turning jobs away and a company like ours can’t afford to do that.“ The equipment was purchased from Glendale Presentation and Graphics finishing equipment dealers. Mark Wilson from Glendale knew immediately what printmeit.com needed, “The equipment they had just wasn’t designed to handle the volumes they are now producing so the finishing was a huge bottleneck. With up to 140 orders a week coming in and only a few staff handling the production, they needed professional, automated equipment.” Since the move to the new premises and equipment upgrade the company has witnessed a surge in productivity. As Adam noted, “Just last week we had a job come in on Friday afternoon – 300 A4 booklets. Before, this would’ve meant we’d have to stay after hours but thanks to the Duplo bookletmaker we got it all finished and out the door by 5 o’clock. I’m pleased, my staff are happy, and the customer is delighted.” The company has also been more than satisfied with their new Duplo DC-445 creaser which has overcome the cracking problem they were facing when folding leaflets and presentation folders. “There is no question, the quality of our output is definitely up and it’s taking us far less time to produce.” commented Adam. As for the future, printmeit.com is already planning further expansion and intends to have a high street presence before the end of the year. Adam explains, “The only problem with an industrial location is people don’t always know you are there. This will help us bring in more local customers.” Duplo UK 01372 478 221, www.duplointernational.com
Label Solutions Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Label Solutions, Essex, has become the latest label specialist to invest in Xeikon colour digital printing technology with the purchase of a Xeikon 3030 digital label press. The Xeikon machine represents the Essex company’s first digital investment following ten years of successful flexographic printing. Commenting on the timing of the investment, Leslie Burden, Managing Director of Label Solutions, said: “We have been examining the digital market for the last year, along with the printing solutions available to us. Undoubtedly digital has been exhibiting extremely fast growth in the label sector in recent years, and we believe that the time is right for us to offer our own solution for customers in this sector of the market. “Despite the current economic uncertainly, we have just had our busiest year with regard to flexo based production, so we believe that now is an ideal time for us to invest in the next stage of our business growth. Digital will enable us to offer something different to our existing customers, and also provide us with the tools to enter new markets. Certainly one area that we are keen to be involved in is to provide a trade label printing service to other producers without their own digital facility at the moment,” adds Leslie Burden. With regard to the choice of digital printing equipment, Leslie Burden said: “Whilst inkjet machines have made some advances during the last year, it was apparent to us that the two leading machines in the market represented the only real choices. Xeikon won through for us on two very important areas: no click charge involved, and no pre-coating of stock needed for standard label substrates. We were also impressed by the print quality offered by the Xeikon technology, as well as the feedback regarding productivity that we had from existing users of the product.” Commenting on the sale of the Xeikon 3030 to Label Solutions, Greg Neesham, Sales Director for Xeikon in the UK, said: “We are, of course, delighted that Leslie and his team have decided to install a Xeikon solution for their digital label production – the first Xeikon label press in Essex. It is an ideal way for the company to celebrate its tenth anniversary! The team at Label Solutions recognised the issues with regard to shrinking run lengths, meaning that digital offers the most economic production solution. The fact that plate production costs are immediately eliminated with digital makes a significant difference to the price of a few thousand full colour labels.” For further information on the Label Solutions digital trade label service call 01277 811 199, e-mail leslie@label-solutions.co.uk or visit www.label-solutions.co.uk or on Xeikon products please e-mail infouk@xeikon.com or visit the www.xeikon.com

Print Industry Sports Calendar to raise funds for The Printing Charity Over 100 guests from the printing and publishing industries attended the official launch at the RKB Gallery in London of a 2012 print industry sports calendar to raise funds for The Printing Charity, a leading national UK charity for the printing and publishing industries. This is the second year individuals and companies from the printing and publishing industries have donated their time and resources to produce a calendar to raise funds for the charity. The 2012 calendar’s theme is ‘industry people as you’ve never seen them’, with each month featuring an industry figure in a sporting pose. Those who agreed to participate were from Apex, BPIF, Konica Minolta, Duplo, London College of Communication, Consorcio, Whitmar Publications, Ricoh, Heidelberg, Friedheim, Renz, and Premier Paper. Stephen Gilbert, the charity’s Chief Executive, commented: “This is a wonderful industry collaboration led by Whitmar Publications on our behalf. Sonia Boriczewski photographed the industry figures for each month; design was provided by JKP Design & Illustration; paper by Premier Paper; printing by Konica Minolta; collating and trimming by Duplo; binding by Renz. Canon produced the launch event posters and RK Burt provided the gallery venue. “Please spread the word about the charity. It’s your industry’s charity. We have the resources and we’re here to help.” A donation of £10 is recommended per calendar, which can be ordered from Alison Braganza at The Printing Charity on 01293 649 366, email alison@theprintingcharity.org.uk
The Image Group gives printed fabric a new twist When Madhouse Associates – one of the North West’s leading integrated marketing communications agencies – recently moved to new headquarters in the heart of Manchester they called in FBI (Flexible Business Interiors) and Image Group UK to transform their new offices into a modern and exciting place to work. Coming up with the concept, FBI asked Image Group to provide, amongst other things, some fabric banners… but with a twist! Image Group subsequently printed a collage of images from Madhouse’s portfolio, direct to flagmesh using their Mimaki Tx400-1800D. This high end production, wide format textile printer features Mimaki’s latest Sb210 disperse inks, recently upgraded by technicians from Mimaki’s distributor, Hybrid Services. Working alongside the team from authorised Mimaki reseller, R A Smart, the technicians installed the latest ink set which Image Group has already seen deliver deeper colours and brighter hues in the many fabric prints they produce. With an increasing demand for printed fabric graphics, The Image Group has invested significantly in state of the art printers and dye sublimation processes. It offers a rapid turnaround on fabric graphics for exhibitions
and displays, point of sale applications and retail environments. Its creatively driven team has produced flying banners, feather flags, even custom tablecloths and marquees. The Image Group combines corporate art sourcing and in house creative services with print production and custom installation where required, ensuring customers benefit from its ability to truly deliver a ‘full service’. Discussing the job for Madhouse Associates, Image Group’s Dan Fleming commented, “The new ink upgrade really helped us to get the best out of our Mimaki. It delivers amazingly sharp detail and vivid colours direct to flagmesh. Without these stunning pieces of print, the concept behind the twisted graphic would have been wasted.” Further information on The Image Group’s complete range of services can be found by visiting www.imagegroupuk.com. For customers interested in investing in their own wide format textile and dye sublimation printing solution, Mimaki’s exclusive distributor for the UK and Ireland is Hybrid Services Ltd and their website is www.hybridservices.co.uk .

First installation of three Morgana DocuMaster machines Just Digital Ltd has announced the installation of its third Morgana DocuMaster machine with the purchase of a new DocuMaster Pro model. The new bookletmaker has already had a significant impression on the Cambridgeshire print producer, as the business has now ordered an upgrade package for its first two existing DocuMaster machines. “The ease of use and productivity gains from the new Pro machine has been very impressive,” said Adam Hill, founder and owner of Just Digital. “The touch screen and the on the run document feeding improvements in the new system are something that we need to add to our first two DocuMaster machines.” Morgana equipment provides the cornerstone of Just Digital’s finishing department. Adam Hill saw them as a company that understood the needs of the digital printer way back in 2004 when he started his business: “As well as providing the range of products that we need, Morgana equipment also comes with the level of customer service and support that is critical to our business. Just Digital is focused on time critical print – we cannot provide that if our equipment suppliers are not able to respond to technical issues with the same service philosophy.” The recently released DocuMaster Pro utilises the same SmartScreen
module as other products in the Morgana Pro range. DocuMaster Pro also benefits from the new PosiFeed feeding system. This enhancement makes an already impressive feeder significantly more accurate and faster in terms of production speed. Simplicity of operation, as provided by the SmartScreen technology, is essential to finishing digitally printed work because run lengths are often very short and operators are typically not skilled bindery operatives. DocuMaster Pro provides a system for taking precollated sets (including covers of heavier stock) and produces a creased, folded and stitched booklet – finished without cracking in the book’s spine or the highly visible centre page spread. Just Digital is now in its eighth year of operation. The business has recently introduced a brand new identity, and moved into a shiny new home of some 6,000 square feet. The company has also just installed another state of the art Xerox 1000 press and is currently developing a fresh new website. Just Digital expects to turnover £2.5 million this year, and is already focused on £3.5 million for its next trading year due to recently winning a large design and print contract – growth achieved with a team that now numbers 40 personnel. www.morgana.co.uk
From Litho to Digital Based in Hailsham, Sussex, Footprint appear to be a small digital printer, but their recent investment in the latest digital print finishing equipment tells a very different story. Established in 2000 by Matt Mitchell, Footprint started life as a small litho house, with a finishing department consisting of just a single guillotine. Four years later, the business invested in its first digital press. This was an ambitious step, but with the machine paying for itself in just 2 months, the business had evolved into an efficient digital outfit. In 2009 the business completed its transition. Firstly it saw the introduction of 2 new Océ digital presses, followed shortly by the sale of its litho presses, completing the switch from a traditional litho printer to a modern digital house. Partner Matt Mitchell commented: “Selling our litho kit was a big step, and a sad day as we are very proud of our history. Fortunately, we have no regrets and are now far stronger as a result.” Following the investment in the digital presses, Footprint soon identified a bottleneck in their production. With shorter runs and a more varied range of work, the need to invest in efficient digital finishing became apparent. “Our work was becoming so varied that we simply did not have the right tools to do everything. We certainly didn’t have enough pairs of hands to get things finished in house. Putting work out to another finisher was too inefficient and we had no choice but to invest in our own kit.Having previously operated fairly manual finishing equipment, it was important for us to buy automated kit. With this in mind we visited Duplo with the intention of looking at the DC-445 with Integrated Folding System to solve our creasing and folding needs. Following two visits to Duplo’s showroom, we found ourselves buying not only the DC-645e with Integrated Folding System, but also a unique Duetto bookletmaking system.”
“Bookletmaking has always been a big part of what we have done, but we have always got by with our existing kit. Having seen the Duetto in action, we saw an opportunity to create a new revenue stream for the business by taking in litho work as well as satisfying our own digital bookletmaking needs.” The investment from Footprint also created a unique hybrid line for Duplo. Unlike traditional Duetto systems, Footprint’s unique requirements led to Duplo tailoring the configuration to improve performance for litho production. The unique digital SCC (slit/cut/crease) unit now sits between the digital sheet feeder and the collator, increasing the speed of traditional collation. “Finishing business cards has also traditionally been a real headache for us. Cutting cards on a guillotine took around five minutes per set. The 645e has not only saved us hours of time, but with the machine being automated, we are able to leave it to do its job and carry on with other tasks.” “We are delighted with the support we have had from Duplo. Our business is fairly unique, and Duplo’s willingness to adapt to our needs was a great help. As the purchase was made on my wife and partner Amber’s birthday, Duplo were even kind enough to gift wrap it for me.” “As for the future of Footprint, we aim to continually invest in the fast paced world of digital print and see the speed, consistency and most importantly quality of our finished product as the key to our success.” www.duplouk.com

ome interesting facts from the exhibition and dealers conference compared litho, down 6.8%, and digital, up 15.2%, mainly attributed to new print products generating new profit opportunities. UMG, in partnership with Uchida are launching new finishing equipment in the UK to produce this new profit generation of print products. Uniquely you can have a mix of these all on one sheet including business cards, folded fixture lists, flyers and menus. Great for a special promotional pack offer. Post litho lessons learnt include the fact that guillotines only work when they have a person attached to them. The new Uchida AeroCut Quatro is many machines in one without an overseeing operator – low power and small footprint combine more savings with this self-aligning print finisher. Combine your kit with this all in one SRA3 cutter, creaser, and new kiss perforator. GBC launches Magnapunch 2.0 This tabletop paper punch is designed to increase productivity and profitability and take paper punching to the next level with evolutionary technology. The heart of the Magnapunch 2.0 is the proprietary edge detection technology that virtually eliminates mis punches. Add to that the GBC advancements in ‘smart’ technology, enabling faster set-up and change over times for custom and uncommon size applications, and that makes the GBC Magnapunch 2.0 the first desktop punch to move from the world of electro mechanical devices into the digital age, bringing increased productivity to all print finishing operations. Mis-punches are usually not detected until the documents are in assembly where the pages have to be re-worked, creating waste, operator inefficiency and reductions in throughput. GBC’s technological advancements in edge detection allow the machine to recognise when paper is not loaded properly and automatically communicate an error message to the operator, virtually eliminating all mis-punching mistakes. Once
corrected, the machine re-sets in seconds and production continues. The Magnapunch 2.0 is the only desktop punch on the market with this innovative edge detection technology. With the new Magnapunch 2.0, smart setup technology permits the operator to realise faster set-ups and change over for custom and/ or uncommon size applications that in the past were imprecise, manual set-ups. Now, the operator simply enters the paper size into the LCD screen, in inches or centimetres, and the machine automatically provides the proper left edge guide placement and pin configuration. The full colour LCD and electronic interface includes pattern and paper size specific set-up instructions and monitors operating conditions throughout the punch process. This leading technology takes a lot of the guess-work out of each production job and reduces operator error tremendously. With a half second punch cycle and continuous duty motor, punching up to 49,000 sheets per hour, the Magnapunch 2.0 is ideal for high volume punch production. Multiple punch patterns are
available to punch sheets with 13 different hole patterns. Interchangeable die sets slide in place quickly and securely without the need for tools. The punch is easily operated with the use of a foot pedal or table top trigger switch, and sheet size capabilities up to 14” are available for most punch patterns. The printers are ready for connection to Mutoh’s continuous ink delivery system. No forced ventilation is required when using these inks, as there are no harmful VOCs that permeate the working environment. For more information on Mutoh and its products, visit www.mutoh.eu
Morgana releases new DocuMaster MFC The product is the latest in the DocuMaster range of booklet making equipment, designed to eliminate tedious and time consuming operations by creasing the sheets as part of the feeding and booklet creation operation. With multiple feed stations, the design of the DocuMaster MFC allows for the feeding of specialised covers and booklet inside pages from separate feed bins while still allowing for creasing of the cover, centre, or all pages of the publication. The DocuMaster MFC incorporates Morgana’s new “DynaTilt” creasing system, which automatically registers each sheet and adjusts the mechanism to ensure an accurate crease position every time. Creasing of covers, centre spreads, or indeed all sheets in the book, if needed, is programmed into the high definition touch screen control unit. Simplicity of operation is essential for finishing digitally printed work. Today’s “on demand” culture means run lengths are smaller and turnaround times are becoming shorter. Controlled by a high definition touch panel, common
to the full range of Morgana Pro products, the DocuMaster MFC is given full instructions as to the book size, amount of pages and crease position. All settings and adjustments are made using the touch panel, meaning that operation of the MFC couldn’t be simpler. An alpha numeric memory allows an unlimited number of jobs to be stored and named by the operator. This makes job recall much easier using job number or customers’ names that are standard within the business. Commenting on the creation of the DocuMaster MFC, Ray Hillhouse, Sales Manager for Morgana Systems in the UK, said: “The MFC sits alongside our DocuMaster Pro product to provide a booklet making solution for digital printers who regularly need to incorporate litho printed covers, or other book sections, into the final publication. The MFC is unique in its ability to crease a cover after it has left the feed station and before it has been integrated into the book. DynaTilt technology has made this possible and the final product is a unique all UK manufactured machine that solves an often found problem in booklet production.” www.morgana.co.uk

New Kala Starter Laminators
Colourgen has announced the exclusive UK distribution of the new range of Kala Starter laminators. These new cold laminators provide simultaneous single sided lamination and adhesive mounting onto substrates up to 50mm thick and are available at an extremely competitive price. This entry level range of wide format laminators comes in 108cm, 140cm and 160cm widths and are all capable of handling rolls up to 100m in length. The Kala Starter range supercedes the existing range of Kala Bunny laminators, by providing more capabilities and better ease of use. The Kala Starter laminators are manufactured to a very high standard and are designed to be easy to use and versatile. The pressure can be adjusted with a high level of control and visual gauge, unlike many other laminators at this price level, which often only have a pre-set lever to control pressure. The new laminators simultaneously apply lamination film to one side and an adhesive layer to the other for easy finishing onto a broad range of substrates up to 50mm. Forward and reverse motion is controlled by hand or with a foot pedal and for safety purposes there is an emergency stop button. The Kala Starter laminators are available immediately from Colourgen authorised resellers, with prices starting at £2,670 (ex VAT) for the 108mm version. First borderless option of Epson’s 64-inch inkjet printer
An adaptation kit for the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 roll fed inkjet printer is now available, enabling users to produce borderless prints; a first in the ecosolvent wide format sector. The kit, available both as an on-site upgrade for existing GS6000 customers and offered as an option on new purchases, allows users to take advantage of new business opportunities, in line with the growing demand for signage and POS applications for interior decoration such as customised wallpapers and window graphics. The GS6000 offers the widest colour gamut to date in a 64-inch roll fed eco-solvent printer. Designed for both outdoor and indoor applications, it is able to switch easily between a range of different coated and non-coated substrates including vinyl, making it an ideal flexible solution for multiple commercial applications. The kit enhances the GS6000’s capabilities, enabling printing without borders at widths from 11.8 inches (300mm) up to 62.5 inches (1,590mm). The on-site upgrade can be performed in about an hour by an Epson service engineer, or comes pre-fitted on a new GS6000. Once upgraded the printer can still print with borders and retains the same high print speeds, print longevity and quality as before. Customers simply need to add on suitable RIP software from their reseller. In addition to new business opportunities the kit also reduces finishing time, media wastage and the need for dedicated cutting or trimming equipment. The Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 borderless kit is available immediately priced at £1799. www.epson.co.uk

Are you looking to bridge that finance gap between your friendly bank manager and re-mortgaging your property?

e have first hand knowledge of a lender that looks at your potential new sales that are gained through investment in more productive print equipment. Often the savings in better running costs are not taken into account when lease companies just view your last set of accounts. Print Finance is part of the Rothschild-owned Five Arrows Leasing Group. Sam Geneen, managing director of Five Arrows, said: “The print sector requires financial support to invest in new equipment and this is not being delivered by banks. The understanding that Print Finance has of the sector, coupled with our resources will bring more competition into the market, which can only be a good thing for printers seeking finance.” According to Paul Coggins, founder and managing director of Print Finance, the firm continues to provide direct and brokered finance to the sector but will be “unrestricted in its ability to lend to the right business.” Coggins said: “It’s the responsibility of manufacturers and finance providers to be positive about the industry and to provide the solutions that will allow investment. The banks will return but that could be a long time away and we need to support printers now, when their balance sheets are a bit weaker, but the
business is fundamentally sound – it’s the rationale for the investment we’ll be looking at, not just the balance sheet.” Check out the company website at www.printfinance.com where you will find some interesting tabs to explore. The page on buying tips will help you drive a good deal when purchasing which is sensible advice shared as it will result in less borrowing. The days of throwing money at printers and lending over the cost of the equipment may never come back. Today we need to keep our negotiated discount and look at independent finance to compare with suppliers ‘rental’ plans. Title and the end of the term is vital, as you may also want to trade in half term. CSN can help with this and retain your trade in value to reduce settlement figures and the ‘top-up’ figure that is becoming more and more difficult to underwrite. Colour Communications
Market leaders across sectors are now generating statements, invoices and other critical customer transactional documents in colour – in far greater numbers than ever before. Here, John Ricketts, Sales Director UK & Ireland, Pitney Bowes Document Messaging Technologies examines why the balance has shifted towards colour communications.
W
hile the benefits of colour print have been documented for decades, the new economics of colour print have only recently tipped from black and white to colour. On the expense side, a new and emerging category of printing devices can generate personalised colour documents at significantly lower per page costs. Advances in technology have increased productivity and significant savings can be made by eliminating pre-printed paper stocks, promotional inserts and the accompanying inventory management. On the revenue side, companies have capitalised on the high open and read rates of transactional documents by adding relevant, data driven offers and promotional messages in colour. New content dashboards have put marketers in control of one to one messaging in ways that provide for direct measurement of response and ROI.
Customer experience By coordinating the look and feel of colour print and digital communications, firms have improved the overall customer experience. There is also a strong sense that adding data driven colour increases the “stickiness” of customer relations. Colour creates communications that are clearer, directions that are easier to follow, and messaging that speaks more personally to the customer. All of these factors combine to create stronger brand association and customers who feel more connected and more loyal. When it comes to using colour effectively, less is often more. Traditionally, businesses have introduced a touch of colour by pre-printing colour logos, letterheads and forms – then populating these digitally in black and white in a separate printing process. Or, they have added colour by pre-printing colour inserts to be collated into the

envelope when mail pieces are being assembled. With a full implementation of colour digital print the whole process becomes simpler. Pre-prints aren’t necessary. Colour and black and white can be printed in one pass. And, colour inserts can be printed right along with the rest of the mail piece. In addition, new technology enables customers to print variable data and images in colour right on the envelope. Today’s tech-savvy customers expect businesses to understand and value their relationships. Duplicate mailings, irrelevant communications, form letters and the like all indicate a lack of understanding; whereas, data directed, personalised communications send the message that the business values their customers enough to truly personally address them and their needs. With digital print stream engineering, it becomes possible to synchronise messages and document formats across channels. This “single face to the customer” strengthens brand recognition, and enables customers to process different communications from the same company more quickly and efficiently. As a result, customers are more likely to respond more rapidly – and correctly – to calls to action and to maintain a more positive view of their relationship with the business.
Even as price points have declined, advances in digital technology have enhanced quality. For example, new digital print technology enables high quality digital print even on standard paper stock. New and innovative printing systems pre-coat the paper just where the ink will be applied – so the look is expensive, but the paper is not. Continued investments in research and development point to an industry commitment to making digital the print standard of the future. With 100% variable printing, communications can be efficiently personalised – in colour – like never before. A combination of colour, personalisation and prospect level messaging can have a great effect on the success of customer communications. All of this can now be easily incorporated into mid and larger sized mailings courtesy of the increased speed and capacity of today’s printing equipment and the intelligence of today’s database and print stream integration. Today’s print stream engineering also enables businesses to redesign documents on the fly. With this flexibility customer communications can be more timely, and the coordination of cross-sell across business units a less arduous task. Form changes can be done with keystrokes rather than a whole new print run. And last minute changes to messaging do not require a full-scale work stoppage to accommodate changes.
Transactional mail The integration of promotional messaging and materials into transactional mail, has become a major focal point for marketers and mailers in recent years – and with good reason. Transactional mail generally requires action by the customer, so it is significantly more likely to get opened and read. When it comes to transactional mail, therefore, customers are a captive
audience, and this is an ideal opportunity to present promotional messaging knowing that it will be seen. Adding colour maximises the impact of promotional messaging, leveraging the opportunity presented by these most opened, most read documents. In a March 2010 survey, 69 percent of consumers indicated that they would be more likely to open a mail piece with colour text and graphics before opening a plain white envelope without messaging. * In addition, digital print stream engineering enables businesses to incorporate “on-serts,” pinpointed messaging printed in colour directly onto current transactional documents and envelopes. This data driven messaging can be more customer specific than ever before, reflecting household relationships with the company and limited time opportunities. Digital colour print is the way of the future – that’s where today’s print industry research and development dollars are going. This is little surprise: digital colour print adds value to both transactional and promotional communications, making it easier for organisations to connect with their customers. Businesses can be more nimble, and get to market faster with more targeted messaging. They can also track mail piece performance more effectively than ever before by making use of the same technologies that drive digital print efficiency. Moving to colour is a smart move on several fronts, but it means more than adding a splash of red, blue or green to a document. Data driven automation provides better communications, better customer relations and increased mail piece productivity—giving organisations a direct opportunity to drive efficiency and revenue through a single initiative. * Commissioned by Pitney Bowes Inc., Leflein Associates conducted this survey of 1500 U.S. consumers.

Mistletoe, Wine and Elf & Safety
CSN’s very own Employment and Health & Safety experts SME Advisor stops the killjoys putting a dampener on this year’s Christmas MISTLETOE AND WINE
I
t is quite common for employers to pay or contribute towards a Christmas lunch or party for their staff. Unfortunately, after a few drinks normal courtesies tend to be set aside and emotions such as frustration and lust can lead to awkward situations. You can still have a great time but just remember • your staff party is merely an extension to your normal workplace and therefore the same rules apply to both employer and employees • if you’re having a lunchtime “do”, then staff shouldn’t be returning to use machinery or perhaps driving if they’ve been drinking alcohol • be mindful of young staff who may be encouraged into drinking alcohol and think of how people are to get home • make sure that you stay in control, misuse of the photocopier could end in a trip to Casualty! • Dutch courage, after a few drinks staff may be more inclined to inform colleagues and management of their true feelings, sometimes amorously and sometimes where they can stick their job. Incidentally, it’s always unwise to accept a resignation in such a way

Elf & Safety Many employers are fearful that allowing their staff to decorate the workplace during the festive period is too risky and blame “Health & Safety” as the killjoy. This couldn’t be further from the truth as health & safety regulations will seldom stop you from doing anything but merely require you take sensible and reasonable steps to consider the risks involved and then approach the task in a safe and practical manner. So, keep it safe and follow a few golden rules • if you’re using hanging decorations then make sure that your staff are using appropriate and supervised steps and they’re not climbing on desks or worse still on swivel chairs! • be aware of fire risks, decorations attached to or near light fittings and heaters represent a real fire hazard • check that Christmas lights are safe and that wires haven’t become detached during storage • Christmas trees, cables and other decorations can cause trip hazards so be careful that walkways are kept clear • why not write a risk assessment, often just going through this process alone will highlight potential issues Simple precautions like these can mean that you and your staff can celebrate Christmas safely and ensure that you still have a full complement of staff in the New Year.

Pressing the flesh Despite electronic information there is no substitute for the real thing face to face. Martin Christie writes…
W
e are bombarded by digital information on a daily basis, special deals, new products, all pleading for time and attention in the crowded working day. We can also source information and opinions by using search engines. But despite all this at our finger tips there is still a real need for the one to one meeting with people and products. Seeing, listening and touching in the real world rather than the virtual one gives a true insight and perspective. Hardware and software can be better assessed, and the relative benefits considered. That and the very human interaction which adds that spark of ingenuity and creativity. It is all too easy for people with their heads buried in information technology to forget that it is also important to be hands on. The opportunity to meet and exchange information with other people in the industry or related industries is something that is not available to the general public and thus has the potential to keep us that vital one step ahead of the increasingly intelligent customer. As I am tapping this column out the news is of financial woes for Thomas Cook, that once bastion of foreign travel from Victorian adventurers to the present days. As well as trouble abroad, and shortage of cash at home, one of the reasons quoted as contributing to its crisis is the fact that travellers these days can glean so much more information about places and prices, as well as how to do it, the need for consulting a high street specialist is much reduced, and the travel shop can no longer charge a premium for knowledge once in its own possession.
That’s a very familiar issue to the digital print shop where, while there are still those who refuse to embrace the electronic age fully, there are others who use it to full advantage almost wielding it as a weapon against the workplace. Important then to have as much ammunition in the armoury as defence against the day when a customer comes in with something you have never even heard of. The end of the year brought lots of interesting events, so much that you could be spoilt for choice. It’s always difficult to decide whether you can afford a day away from the studio, especially in these uncertain days. The balance however, is the gain of something which will be profitable in the short or long term. The digital business network is as vital as the social network has become to general society. So many things are moving in so many directions it is important to try and monitor what is happening, and what may be happening. The traditional trade show of the printing industry that was more of a gentlemen’s club than a showcase of innovation is long since redundant. The new generation is one of smaller, specialist expos, at the cutting edge of novelty and innovation. The Business Design Centre in Islington was the bright and cheerful venue for Canon’s Pro Solutions Expo, now firmly established as a timely meeting point of many things to do with image capture, manipulation and presentation. With Canon having a product for most parts of the process, it is logical for them to host such an event and take prime position on the exhibition floor, but it also sees a good selection of other involved exhibitors with products that don’t conflict.

Once again I got to handle Hasselblad’s awesome 40 megapixel digital camera, and take home its results to study, still way out of my CSN expenses budget, but looking at the escalating specification of more popular DSLR cameras it won’t be long before customers are bringing in fifty megabyte Jpegs for us to print. Specialist paper companies, like Essex based Innova, as well as Ilford and traditional German manufacturer Hahnemuhle, showed that the demand for ever improved media performance is still a major selling point. With over three thousand visitors over the two days, the Expo was busy but not so packed that you couldn’t chat to experts which is often the case with public exhibitions, and that’s what makes it a valuable day out. Talking with people in related industries does give a perspective on things you don’t get out of the daily grind at the shop counter, dominated as it often is by cost and speed and the pressure of problem solving. Taking a step aside to see the bigger picture is important to see what is coming next. In contrast to the glass and light of Islington, the rather sombre Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster were chosen for an additional date in Photovision’s now annual roadshows. Like others, they chose to take their presentation on the road rather than expect visitors to take extra time and travel, and do a series of one day events. One of my highlights of a visit here was finally getting to chat to a regular CSN advertiser Lion, whose massive range of finishing products for frames and canvas fills several catalogues. Once again, picking the items up and getting a proper feel for them, answers a lot more questions than looking at often confusing specifications in magazines. Another major distributer, Digital Photo Solutions hosted their first ever DPS Select open day in November , in conjunction with leading distributor, Computers Unlimited (CU).at CU’s showroom in Colindale, North London. This featured a comprehensive lineup of Epson large format printers and advice, as well as experts from Adobe, Wacom, and Datacolor. As we head into the winter break, there’s plenty of information to be chewing over, and opportunities to be considered. 2012 may be looking to be another tough year, but at least we areas well advised to face it as we can be.

Fujifilm wind turbine power generation now operational
Fujifilm Europe has installed five wind turbines, which are now fully operational, at its manufacturing and R&D site in Tilburg, The Netherlands. They were developed in partnership with ENECO. The five Vestas V90 wind turbines, each able to generate a maximum of two megawatts, are together capable of generating approximately 20% of the total energy used by the 63 hectare Tilburg site. This development is part of an ambitious target set by FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V. to become a carbon neutral site, with the wind turbines alone likely to reduce CO2 emissions by 12,000 tonnes per year. The company has also installed a water recycling facility, consisting of two large water purification units, on site. With these and other sustainability measures in place, FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V. estimates that it currently reuses 13% of the waste it produces, recycles 68%, regenerates 18% and so is left with less than 1% of the total site waste to dispose of. To supplement these initiatives, however, Fujifilm is also investigating the possibility of cleaning some of the waste water the site generates for reuse within the production process, as well as the option of constructing a complete waste water treatment system on site, in collaboration
with three neighbouring companies. In addition, a feasibility study is also in progress for replacing the natural gas used in production with bio-gas, with the results of this study due to be available at the end of 2011. Ryuta Masui, senior vice president, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH, comments, “Fujifilm has always been committed to the environment as we feel that we have a responsibility to reduce our burden on the planet as much as possible. With the last of our five windmills now in production we are proud to be able to generate 20% of the energy we consume at our Tilburg manufacturing site through wind power.” He continues, “It’s not only the way in which we manufacture our products that is important but also the products themselves. We aim to
manufacture both process less and low chemistry offset plates at this site, and are also in the process of developing other exciting products for sustainable applications in other areas of our business here at Tilburg.” The company is also pleased to confirm that its highly anticipated third state of the art offset plate manufacturing line (PS-10) is close to completion, as originally announced. The new PS-10 line has been designed to be able to manufacture Fujifilm’s ‘lo-chem’ family of plates, alongside Fujifilm’s most advanced printing plate to date, the recently launched Brillia HD PRO-T3. Once complete, these investments will not only make Fujifilm’s plate production facilities in Tilburg one of the largest in the world, but also the most sustainable. www.fujifilm.co.uk/gs
Paper preferred! In a wide ranging new survey, a new generation of ‘digital natives’ show strong preferences for paper; still the favoured medium of all age groups for reading and safe keeping of documents. The research conducted by IPSOS, in association with industry organisations Two Sides and Print Power, interviewed 4,500 European consumers who declared their preference for paper based media in a digital world.
UK consumers follow the European trend “In an exciting multimedia world, with mobile devices setting the communication agenda, it’s perhaps surprising but reassuring,” says Martyn Eustace, Director of Two Sides, an organisation dedicated to promoting an understanding of print and paper’s environmental sustainability, “Publishers of books, newspaper and magazines will be delighted, I’m sure, to know that, for their readers who can now choose to read many different devices, print on paper is still a favourite”.
In brief the survey shows that in Europe: The 18 – 24 year old age group, the so called Digital Natives, lead consumers in appreciating paper based media: • 83% of 18-24 year olds, (80% of all consumers), believe that reading from paper is nicer than reading off a screen. • 78% of 18 – 24 year olds, (74% of all consumers), say that compared to other media, print and paper is more pleasant to handle and touch. • 63% of 18 – 24 year olds, (58% of all consumers), prefer to keep important documents on paper And when it comes to the environment:
57% of 18-24 year olds, (54% of all consumers), believe that paper records are more sustainable than electronic storage of information 63% of 18-24 year olds, (68% of all consumers), believe that print and paper is based on a renewable resource. But there are clear signs that consumers require more information about the environmental sustainability of print and paper media. 80% believe that forests in Europe have remained the same or decreased in size over the past 50 years. (In fact, according to the UN FAO, forests have actually increased in size by 30%) Most consumers believe that about 20-40% of waste paper is collected. (In fact, according to the European Recovered Paper Council, ERPC, the European recycling rate for paper and packaging is 69%. The industry is one of Europe’s leading recyclers) “The message here, says Eustace, is that whilst consumers are still showing strong preferences for paper, we can do more to tell them about the industry’s great environmental record, particularly on recycling and the very positive development of Europe’s forests. We don’t want consumers feeling guilty about using print on paper; it’s a fantastically powerful and sustainable way to communicate” Two sides will be using the results of the survey to plan its continuing campaign which is creating a better awareness of the great environmental credentials of paper and print media. In a world of fast growing and energy hungry digital communication channels print and paper, being based on wood, a renewable and recyclable material, print and paper, may be the sustainable way to communicate. www.twosides.info

Heat Map; you’re on it!
Thanks to Stephen Kilbee at www.talkingwithmaps.co.uk for running our CSN mailing list through his postcode software, resulting in this sizzling heat map. 6600+ frontline printers making their mark all over the UK, but wait a minute there is some white space showing? We can easily see that our hot spot is Birmingham, the professional print capital of the UK, London postcodes may be geographically smaller but as proved here each have at least 30 less printers than Brum. Worryingly our boast of covering the whole country is now in question and caused some panic in our data base department. Lara was distraught at the fact we had no representation in Llandrindod Wells, Dumfries, Kirkwall or the Hebrides. Operation ‘Fill that space in’ commenced with a pincer movement attack through google and yell. New printers were tracked down and invited to join the nation’s band of merry CSN readers and receive their monthly trade magazine. So a warm welcome on board goes to James Robertson at the Print Copy Centre, English Street, Dumfries; Colin Stewart, Caithness Print Solutions, River Street, Wick, KW1; Shona Nicholson at Shore Print and Design, Rigs Road, Stornoway and finally to Linda Rainbird at HighTec Secretarial Services, Llandrindod Wells. A good month to join as you get a free SRA1 year planner too. Now that we have that covered, over to Stephen who has a CSN readers offer mapped out for all our professional print club members old and new. Stephen Kilbee the owner of Talking With Maps said, “A postcode heat map allows you to see where the potential for growth is for any business, product or service on an easy to understand coloured map. Our postcode heat maps could be a profitable additional form of revenue for CSN members as it could be marketed as their own service to their client’s. Print shops know which of their client’s this service may be suitable for. Members would email us the postcodes of their client’s customer database, we would analyse these postcodes using our unique in-house algorithms to create the finished map. The map could show customer density, sales by value or unit, delivery patterns, web customers or any other criteria to suit their clients needs. As we only use the postcode, anonymity is guaranteed and all data is held in the strictest confidence. A full sized A1 jpeg would be sent to the print shop for sign-off by their client. The finished pdf map would be emailed to the print shop for printing/laminating. On the Talking With Maps website the printed A1 sized Postcode Heat Map is £135 + £3.95p&p + VAT, the laminated version is £141 + £3.95p&p + VAT. If only the pdf version is required the price is £125 + VAT. CSN members will get a special discounted price of £95 + VAT for the pdf version of the map. Members would then sell the printed/laminated map to their customers”. Tel: 01949 875833

Perfect Partner A spouse is someone who’ll stand by you through all the trouble you wouldn’t have had if you’d stayed single.
New year’s wish… Bring Tommy Cooper Back • Two blondes walk into a building... you’d think at least one of them would have seen it. • Phone answering machine message - ‘If you want to buy marijuana, press the hash key...’ • A guy walks into the psychiatrist wearing only Clingfilm for shorts. The shrink says, ‘Well, I can clearly see you’re nuts.’ • I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any. • I went to the butchers the other day and I bet him 50 quid that he couldn’t reach the meat off the top shelf. He said, ‘No, the steaks are too high.’ • My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currant pulled him in. • I went to a seafood disco last week and pulled a muscle. • Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can’t have your kayak and heat it. Our ice cream man was found lying on the floor of his van covered with hundreds and thousands. Police say that he topped himself. • Man goes to the doctor, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says ‘I’ll give you some cream to put on it.’ • ‘Doc I can’t stop singing ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home’. ‘That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome.’ ‘Is it common?’ ‘It’s not unusual.’ • A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. ‘My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?’ ‘Well,’ said the vet, ‘let’s have a look at him’. • So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, ‘I’m going to have to put him down.’ ‘What? Because he’s cross-eyed?’ ‘No, because he’s really heavy’. • What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh. • So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me ‘Can you give me a lift?’ I said ‘Sure, you look great, the world’s your oyster, go for it’ • Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum
or my Dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother HoCha-Chu. But I think it’s Colin. • Two fat blokes in a pub, one says to the other ‘Your round.’ The other one says ‘So are you, you fat git!’ • Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, and the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off. • ‘You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. It said, ‘Parking Fine.’ So that was nice.’ • A man walked into the doctors, he said, ‘I’ve hurt my arm in several places’. The doctor said, ‘Well don’t go to those places anymore! Thanks for the above to this year’s top contributor: Dean Cook from The Magazine Production Company
Best Christmas present ever Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said, ‘I built a big house for our mother.’ The second said,’ I sent her a Mercedes with a driver.’ The third smiled and said, ‘I’ve got you, both beat. You know how Mum enjoys the Bible, and you know she can’t see very well. I sent her a brown parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 20 monks in a monastery 12 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute £100,000.00 a year for 10 years, but it was worth it. Mum just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it.’ Soon thereafter, Mum sent out her letters of thanks: ‘Milton,’ she wrote the first son, ‘The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.’ ‘Marvin,’ she wrote to another, ‘I am too old to travel. I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!’ ‘Dearest Melvin,’ she wrote to her third son, ‘You were the only son to have the good sense to know what your mother likes. That chicken was delicious.’
Christmas Hunch A man shows up for his doctor’s appointment with a mince pie in each ear and a Yule log in each of his nostrils. He says to the doctor, “Doc, I’m not feeling well.” Whereupon the doctor replied,” You must try to eat normally at Christmas.”
Tough Road Ahead A piece of road walks into a bar and declares to all the occupants, ‘I’m the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole of this town!’ The piano player stops and the bar goes deadly silent. After a brief, pregnant pause, all eyes drop, the piano starts up again and the piece of road pulls up a bar stool and settles down to a pint. Five minutes later a piece of dualcarriageway throws open the bar door. Once again the bar goes silent, but for the creaking of the slow overhead fans. The dual-carriageway declares, ‘I’m the toughest piece of bitumen you’ll ever see this side of the border and I don’t take crap from anyone!’ The piece of road slowly turns and locks eyes with the piece of dualcarriageway. The tension mounts, other drinkers scatter and take cover. At that precise moment, in walks a piece of freeway and says, ‘I’m the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole damn country and I’ll take you both on.’ And there they stood, in a threeway Mexican stand-off, for what seemed like an eternity. Once again the door opens and into the middle of the stand-off walks a piece of coloured bitumen. The other three turn their backs to the door, sit down at the bar and stare sheepishly into their drinks. The bartender asks the three pieces of bitumen what the problem is, and they reply, ‘Shhhh. Watch what you say, that guy’s a real cycle path’
And another thing… So there’s this man with a parrot. And his parrot swears like a sailor, I mean he’s rapid. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself. The trouble is that the guy who owns the parrot is a quiet, conservative type, and this bird’s foul mouth is driving him crazy. One day, it gets to be too much, so the guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him really hard, and yells, “QUIT IT!” But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever. Then the guy gets mad and says, “That’s it. I’ll get you.” and locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet. This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of invective that would make a veteran sailor blush. At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds, there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly goes very quiet.
At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he’s so worried that he opens up the freezer door. The bird calmly climbs onto the man’s outstretched arm and says, “Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I’ll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on.” The man is astounded. He can’t understand the transformation that has come over the parrot. Then the parrot says, “By the way, what did the chicken do?”
Oh Dear Dead Duck Technique A lady brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. She laid her pet on the table and the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry Mrs Smith, your duck has passed away.” The lady was distressed and wailed, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure that your duck is dead,” replied the vet. “How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.” The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.” The vet turned to his computer, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “£150!” she cried, “£150 just to tell me my duck is dead!” The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry.” “If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been £20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now £150.”

Beach business A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot. One summer they noticed a girl who was at the beach pretty much every day. She wasn’t unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing. She would approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around, then speak to them. Generally, the people would respond negatively and she would wander off, but occasionally someone would nod and there would be a quick exchange of money for something she carried in her bag. The couple assumed she was selling drugs and debated calling the cops, but since they didn’t know for sure they just continued to watch her. After a couple of weeks the wife asked, “Honey, have you ever noticed that she only goes up to people with boom boxes and other electronic devices?” He hadn’t and said so. Then she said, “Tomorrow I want you to get a towel and our big radio and go lie out on the beach. Then we can find out what she’s really doing.” Well, the plan went off without a hitch, and the wife was almost hopping up and down with anticipation when she saw the girl talk to her husband and then leave. The man walked up the beach and met his wife at the road. “Well, is she selling drugs?” she asked excitedly.” No, she’s not.” he said, enjoying this probably more than he should have. “Well, what is it, then?” his wife fairly shrieked. The man grinned and said. “Her name is Sally and she’s a battery salesperson.” “Batteries?” cried the wife. “Yes,” he replied. “Sally sells C cells by the Seashore

Are you insured Checked Up A 90-year-old man went to his doctor for his annual check-up. The doctor asked him how he was feeling. The 90-year-old said: ‘I’ve never felt better. I have an lovely 18-year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?’ The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began: ‘I have a friend who is a hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun. When he got to the creek, he saw a prime deer sitting beside the stream of water. He raised his umbrella and went: ‘Bang, bang’ and the deer fell dead. What do you think of that?’ The 90-year-old said, ‘I’d say somebody else shot that deer.’ The doctor replied... ‘My point exactly.’

Confessions of a copier salesman I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years. Well, I have done something about it: A couple of nights ago I was out for a few drinks with some mates and had a few too many whiskies as well as beers and some rather nice claret; but knowing full well that I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before – I took a bus home. I arrived back safely and without incident which was a real surprise, since I had never driven a bus before.
Playing Around
Two golfers met at the club. “I heard about your terrible tragedy last Doctor Darren had slept with one of his patients and had felt guilty all day week,” said one. “Yes,” said the other sadly, sipping long. No matter how much he tried his drink. “I was playing a two-some to forget about it, he couldn’t. The with Winthrop, and he dropped dead guilt was overwhelming. on the ninth hole.” But, every once in a while, he’d hear “I understand you carried him all that soothing voice within himself, the way back to the clubhouse too,” trying to reassure him: the first man said sympathetically. ‘Darren, don’t worry about it. You “That must have been very difficult, aren’t the first doctor to sleep with considering Winthrop weighed over one of his patients and you won’t be two hundred and fifty pounds.” “The carrying wasn’t that hard. the last. And, you’re single. Let it go...’ It was putting him down at every But, invariably the other voice stroke, then picking him up again would bring him back to reality: ‘Darren, you’re a vet. that wore me out.”

Well Being One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The poor animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel soil into the well. At first, the donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quietened down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of soil that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel soil on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! Life is going to shovel soil on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up! P.S. The donkey later came back and kicked the crap out of the farmer who tried burying him. Moral: When you try to cover your ass, it always comes back to get you.
DONALD: Yesterday you said it was H to O.
