he organisers of the inaugural Digital Print UK are creating a unique and valuable visitor experience and as such are asking industry peers and print service providers what they would like to see at the show. “We are taking the show from the visitors perspective rather than that of a show organiser”, says Alan Caddick, Senior Marketing Manager. “So, as part of this exercise we are asking our industry peers for their opinion and welcome any feedback. It is not about buying a box and hitting print it is about the business of making money and we want the show to be a platform from which visitors can discover many ways in which to drive their profits forward. The market has matured considerably over recent years with emerging technology giving printers more of those profit making opportunities which includes realising how existing kit can be used to its full potential. This is why we are using a mix of advice, demos and working applications which will prove of real business value to those visiting the show whether they are looking to invest or are already considered to be digital printers.” Digital Print UK will take place on the 18-20th September 2012 at the NEC, Birmingham, giving UK printers an easily accessible destination to see a wide range of products and services as well as some of the exciting developments which are planned for launch at drupa. This is the UK show for the UK market. It is the perfect opportunity for UK companies to both conduct business and learn how to ‘drive profits with digital print.’ The show will encompass both a production environment and a strong mix of advice and business opportunities to attract visitors and there are have plans afoot to make the new show an event that is simply too valuable to ignore.

ince its launch in 2005 thousands of students across the country have participated in the industry backed PrintIT! programme, an industry wide educational initiative led by Proskills which encourages students to consider a career in the print and paper industries. As we enter 2012 and with the 2011/12 programme up and running, now is the ideal time to look back on the first six years of the programme and celebrate its success in promoting the print and paper industries. Evidence suggests the programme has a real impact on participating students’ perceptions of the industries. A recent survey found that students were twice as likely to consider the print and paper industries ‘exciting’, ‘versatile and dynamic’ and ‘environmentally friendly’, and three times as likely to think about taking an apprenticeship after completing PrintIT!, demonstrating its importance to the long term future of the print and paper industries. The programme has now been mapped to GCSE and A-level media studies as well as Graphic Products and Product Design. The overall development of the programme has been welcomed by teachers. “Having worked on the format that was used last year I like the developments that have taken place,” said Jon Lambert, Curriculum Manager of Design and Technology at Aylesbury High School in Buckinghamshire. Due to the success of PrintIT! Proskills has developed the programme for five other industries

in the process and manufacturing sector and PrintIT! Scotland was launched in 2010 with a Wales version soon to be curriculum mapped and developed. This wider relevance has helped the programme attract broad support from industry. Their generous support will help teachers engage students in major design challenges and heighten awareness of the wide variety of career opportunities available in the print industry. Pantone, a platinum sponsor has donated equipment and Xaar, a gold sponsor has provided copies of ‘Industrial Inkjet for Dummies’, helping students develop industry relevant skills. Plus there are two recent silver sponsors, GVMC and DS Smith. Last year in excess of 500 schools registered, nearly 24,000 students on the programmes and excess of 200 employers twinned with schools. There is no better programme to engage students with what the fascinating world of print has to offer. Duplication centre enhance quality and profitability T

he invesTmenT in a new Duplo DC-615 automatic crease and cutting machine has enabled Duplication Centre to simultaneously reduce production costs and improve the quality of the 40,000 CDs and DVDs they output every month. The Essex based company has been trading for 8 years and offers CD, DVD and Blue-ray duplication services to everyone from the general public to some of the world’s largest blue-chip organisations. Managing Director Martin Johnson has seen the company grow year on year and puts the success down to the superior quality of its products and a commitment to delivering first class customer service. The company markets itself and transacts most its business online and strives to achieve the fastest turnaround, highest quality and lowest cost service in the UK. Copying the discs, printing the artwork and assembling the finished goods into cases is done completely in-house giving the company full control over quality. Mr Johnson explained, “ We look to exceed customer expectations in everything we do. Even our raw materials are the best available. We only use Sony discs and Xerox paper (for the CD inlays and DVD wraps) to give a finish no one else offers”. As a quality focus organisation the company is always looking at ways to improve and had been disappointed by the standard of some its printed paper inserts that accompany the discs. Toner cracking on folded inserts was of particular concern as was the time taken to complete a job. Until the DC-615 was installed, the company was printing CD inlays (track listings), booklets and DVD wraps using its Xerox workstation and then cutting them on a guillotine before folding and inserting into cases. Now, the company simply loads the raw print from the Xerox directly into the DC-615 which does all the cutting automatically; by-passing the

guillotine. This has freed up man power as the machine does not need a dedicated minder. Mr Johnson was also pleased with the DC-615’s built-in creaser; “ We used to buy in pre-perforated paper for the CD inlays but we’d often get cracking when we folded it. With the DC-615 we can crease the sheets instead so we don’t need pre-perforated paper, the finish is better and cost is lower.” The Duplo DC-615 was supplied to Duplication Centre by print finishing equipment specialist, Elmstok. The DC-615 is a pre-programmble digital finisher that cuts and creases SRA3 sheets down to finished products. The Printing Charity has announced that Murdoch MacLennan, Chief Executive Officer of the Telegraph Media Group Limited, has accepted the charity’s invitation to be its President for 2012. The honorary role is for a one year term commencing on 1 January 2012 when he will take over from the charity’s outgoing President, Sir Christopher Meyer KCMG. The caravan gallery brings artwork to life The Caravan Gallery is a mobile exhibition venue and visual arts project that aims to record the ordinary and extraordinary details of life in 21st century Britain. Eager to examine clichés and cultural trends, it highlights the absurd anomalies and curious juxtapositions that are typical of places in transition. The gallery needs to produce prints for use in its own exhibitions and for larger displays at galleries across the UK. “Over the years, we have used a number of different printers, media and inks to produce our prints – always aiming to get the best results in terms of colour fidelity, durability and quality,” explains Chris Teasdale, co-founder of The Caravan Gallery. “However, this is not as easy as it sounds. For one indoor exhibition in Sunderland we produced 500 prints, but by the end of the month they had been bleached green. It was a constant struggle to get the quality we needed both for our own shows and for gallery exhibitions.” The Caravan Gallery turned to third party print shops to produce the larger format prints needed for exhibitions, but found this involved surrendering control of the process with a subsequent loss in control and colour reproduction. It was on the look out for a high quality printer that could deliver lasting prints on top of quality media. “We already partner with Panasonic Lumix, who provide our cameras, and invited us to its stand at the Focus on Imaging Expo to show the public the great results that can be achieved with Lumix cameras. Panasonic is closely linked with HP so we thought we should approach them for advice on printers at the show,” adds Teasdale. “The quality of the HP printers was exactly what we were looking for, and HP was delighted to get involved. The company loaned us an HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer with HP Photo Inks which is perfect for printing superb quality prints that last a lifetime. It also handles reds, which have caused us lots of trouble in the past, with perfect fidelity.”

The printing system takes advantage of HP chromatic red ink, part of the new Designjet technology, which enables new shades in red, green and blue for a wider range of colours, while giving red shades pure RGB values without changing the printer’s overall colour palette. The chromatic red ink enables incredible colour quality and, together with the other HP Photo Inks, delivers over 200 years’ permanence on a range of HP media.1 “We loved the clarity and perfection of the HP Matte Litho realistic Paper. It contrasts really well with our typical subject matter which is quite gritty and urban. The first exhibition we produced on the HP Designjet Z3200 blew the audience away – everyone thought the print quality was amazing,” adds Jan Williams, co-founder. “People often associate our formats with amateur snapshots, so to see the quality produced by the combination of printer, media and ink was a real eye-opener. It also gives us the ability to easily enlarge to an A1 format which helps transform our work for gallery presentation.” The HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer is now crucial to the cosy caravan that tours Britain with its eclectic exhibitions. It has not only made the prints on view much higher quality – it has also opened new opportunities for Teasdale and Williams. “We can now easily print individual pieces to order for visitors to the gallery, whereas previously we could only offer our books, such as Is Britain Great? And we can also offer services to other artists,” says Williams. “A very discerning international artist, who was this year’s winner of Art Space Portsmouth’s International Artist Residency award, was astonished by the quality and asked us to produce 50 prints for her own exhibition. global marketing campaign relies on Augmented Reality When the drupa advertisements appear in roughly 500 specialist publications in over 60 countries in the next few months, the letters AR in the top right-hand corner will catch your eye immediately: The advertisement is enhanced by augmented reality. If the reader views the marker, in this case the image, using a smartphone, tablet or PC/laptop camera equipped with special software (Junaio; also see www.drupa.de/hilfe), then a 3D animation starts up on the screen. You are taken directly to the drupa website by just tapping the interactive button with your finger. The advantages are obvious: Using print the reader can be directly taken to the drupa website to get the latest information. “This logical linking up of print, internet and mobile systems is the central theme of our whole marketing campaign for drupa 2012 and is a continuous thread throughout all elements”, explains Petra Köhler, Manager of Marketing Communication at Messe Düsseldorf. “In its marketing campaigns drupa has always picked up on the latest print communication trends, adapted them to the specific needs of the world’s leading trade fair and implemented them accordingly. “The cross-media networking of different media channels is the focus of the next drupa, although print is still the leading medium”, clarifies Petra Köhler. “The campaign’s motto is fittingly: your link to print”. uniQue hp Latex Demonstration Suite is now open at Nottingham based ArtSystems, featuring the most comprehensive range of HP Latex printers in the UK. The new HP Designjet L26500 and L28500 join the existing HP Scitex LX850 and are already being used to train HP Reseller Partners as the UK launch activity builds for 2012. Bound to succeed Watkiss Automation’s new 420PUR perfect binder has successfully completed customer testing and is now available in the UK. The 420PUR has its own niche as an entry level machine offering the benefits of PUR binding on a budget. It has a 420mm x 50mm maximum spine and a closed tank glue system. Adrian Wood, Sales and General Manager at test site Advantage Digital of Dorchester, says: “We were looking for a PUR solution, but we thought the available options were over-engineered and overpriced until the Watkiss machine was presented to us - some of the processes may be manual but there are real cost savings for us and our customers. We can now offer short run PUR at a fraction of the cost of traditional trade finishers.” The company runs an iGen4 digital press and previously had a hot melt EVA binder. “We could cope with lighter stocks, but a common requirement was 150 gsm silk or gloss with a 350 gsm cover. To produce work like this with a traditional hot melt machine using digital compatible stock just doesn’t work, books start to fall apart rapidly,” says Mr Wood. One of the key features of the Watkiss 420PUR is a unique recirculating glue system, meaning the glue is not simply supplied to the point of delivery in one direction, minimising the potential for clogging. Viscosity is maintained by keeping it in motion via the careful management of temperature and pressure. To this end, it has four connected glue tanks so that different temperatures can be maintained in different parts of the machine. Another feature is ‘on demand’ glue melt; in many systems, a whole PUR candle must be melted each time – the Watkiss system has an insulated candle housing, where heat is applied from below, meaning the glue can be melted

incrementally, saving on both cost and maintenance. Book blocks and covers are manually loaded. From there, the process is largely automated, with the vice and clamp automatically adjusting according to book width. The spine dimensions for gluing are set via a photo sensor, ensuring that the correct amount of PUR adhesive is applied, every time. The floor standing Watkiss 420PUR features a milling disc which takes a fine layer off the spine rather than just cutting notches, which results in better spine preparation, better adhesion and a flatter spine. Mimaki launches TS34-1800A dye sub printer

Mimaki is set to launch a new 1.8m wide, production dye sublimation printer. The TS34-1800A has been designed specifically for the sublimation printing market with high speed and quality in mind. Sublimation transfer printing is widely utilised for sportswear applications due to the elasticity and quick drying capability of polyester material as well as in the growing market of soft signage applications, such as flags, retail point of sale and exhibition graphics. With a staggered array of two newly developed print heads, the Mimaki TS34-1800A is capable of printing up to 32m2/hr at 540 x 720 dpi. In addition to this significant production speed, the machine can achieve a printing speed of 17.7m2/hr in six colour mode at the same resolution, where customers have a requirement for superior quality prints, with smooth gradations of tone and colour. These features make the TS34-1800A suitable for both large sized soft signs and apparel applications, which respectively require a quick response and fine image quality. In addition to this increased print speed and quality, various practical functions also contribute to the improved productivity of the machine by enabling automated continuous operation. Mimaki’s UISS function enables the setting of two ink cartridges per colour in four colour mode. When an ink cartridge is depleted, the system switches automatically to the second cartridge of the same colour, preventing the printing process from stopping. The optional Mimaki Bulk Ink System (MBIS) provides large volume continuous ink supply with two litre ink sacks. As a result, overall ink costs along with users’ environmental footprint are substantially reduced. Mimaki also offers an optional drying fan which increases the ink drying speed significantly, enabling continuous media take-up even during high speed printing. PaperCo launches Giroform Giroform is to supercede Autocopy as the main sheeted carbonless brand supplied by PaperCo. The company has stocked the local warehouses for all 20 of its regional branches and company sales staff can now provide swatches and sample packs as well as technical information on this popular brand. Produced at the Mitsubishi HiTec paper mill in Bielefeld, which is ISO 14001 certified, Giroform was the first carbonless grade to be awarded the Nordic White Swan eco-label and it is FSC Chain of Custody certified. Giroform is available for both litho and digital applications. Its high bulk, stiffness and rigidity provide excellent stability making it a very easy product to use on modern high speed press and finishing equipment. Grammages for the standard are white CB 80gsm, all (white and tints) CFB 86gsm and all CF 80gsm and the formats range from A4 to SRA2. These papers can be combined into fan apart sets using a Giroform adhesive. Stocks can be kept and used for up to five years and the copy durability of Giroform is put at ten years. The Giroform CF system cards are available in 130gsm and 170gsm options in white or chamois colours. The Giroform digital range is manufactured in 90gsm and surface coated. CB, CFB and CF sheets are available and there are also two or three part pre-collated sets as well as fan-apart gluing options. It has been Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) approved for HP Indigo process and also runs on Ricoh, Kodak and Nexpress machines. Charles Eaton, head of marketing, says: “When we discovered that Autocopy was being phased out by the mill we had to find a good value, workable solution. Companies can combine Autocopy and Giroform papers if they apply Giroform adhesives for fanned out sets. Moving forward Giroform offers the printability we know our customers need but also a respected digital option. Green Trail in 2012 Exhibition organisers Faversham House Group will launch a “Green Trail” at the Sign & Digital UK. The Green Trail will highlight products that display either an eco-friendly, environmental or ethical element. Back Behind the Lens This column has historically had a firm base in digital photography, and its developing role in the output of the printed image. When we began the digital journey, over a decade ago, the electronic eye was just coming out of the realm of novelty and into that of a practical professional tool. The early comparisons of film versus pixel count are now redundant, though the debate still lingers amongst the purists. Martin Christie writes…

M

ost recently, the technology has moved on again. Now specifications that would have flattered a camera some years ago are available on a mobile phone. Consequently the current sales of devices that only take pictures are in decline — by as much as thirty per cent according to reports. The consequences of the development of the Iphone and other similar gadgets are hard to predict. They are not likely to cause the demise of the stand alone camera as such, but they will herald a terminal decline of the pocket sized compact camera. Why carry two pieces when one will do both jobs ? This culling of the weakest items technically may ironically help the case of the “proper “ camera — one with a decent sensor, processor and optical capacity. Those who still want to take pictures and not just snaps will be able to identify the difference, and not be confused by competing properties on paper that do not translate into quality results when printed on paper. It’s possible that the guidelines between photography basic imagery will become clearer. It may just come down to what is acceptable in terms of quality. It is estimated that the average Iphone user has over two thousand images (not to mention music, movies and apps) stored on their pocket illustrator already, a figure I can easily believe watching people scrolling through the banks of thumbnails searching for the one they really want to view. It’s a scene we are now all too familiar with at the shop counter while a customer browses for that perfect picture for a mug or a T shirt. At least you can tell in advance that it’s unlikely to be suitable for a metre square canvas print. Camera manufacturers have had a hard time adapting to the fast moving

pace of the digital revolution after years of relative stability — the traditional 35mm film camera had been barely changed in the previous 25 years. Now there were new developments almost every month and unless you had a revolutionary new product every year you were dead. The digital camera battleground spread in several directions at once. At the professional end the top specifications became more sophisticated, the middle ground saw high specifications more affordable, and the mass market increasing complexity at an economy price. And to the non-expert it was very hard to tell where the lines were drawn, and what the difference was or meant in output. The so called bridge cameras are a recent attempt to draw a clean line — positioned between more complex and expensive DSLRs — which have through the lens viewing and interchangeable lenses — and the many different types of compact. The aim is to approach the quality and flexibility of the one with the size and convenience of the other. I’ve picked on the latest Fuji HS20 to review for two reasons. First as a Fuji professional user I am very familiar with their DSLRs, and thus able to judge the comparative performance, and secondly, I have known and used previous models in this line going back at least eight years. The HS20 is the latest incarnation of what is in digital terms a long line of practical and user friendly cameras, which although the body shape has barely changed, has been comprehensively improved internally — sensor, processor — the whole shooting match in fact. It sports an impressive 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with all manner of state of the art refinements for image stabilisation and colour shift adjustment. At the sharp end there’s a thirty times optical ( note optics not electronics) zoom lens which is the equivalent of a 24mm wide angle up to a 720mm extreme zoom — enough to capture the whole of a football stadium edge to edge, or the centre circle for kick-off. The zoom is manually operated by a barrel on the lens, like a DSLR, and is much faster that way, so much so the electronic fine focus may struggle to catch up at times. In order to assist a steady hand at maximum distance, there is mechanical image stabilisation. With an F/2.85.6 aperture, this zoom lets in a healthy amount of much needed light, often the issue with budget digital cameras. Unless the lens lets in enough good quality colour information, in simple terms, whatever the processor does to regurgitate it is going to be less than ideal. The HS20 can be dialled in to shoot in very low light, and though the resulting images will inevitably be low quality, they are still not as bad as many I have seen. Although comparatively small, the camera fits comfortably into an average sized hand, the right side grip being a perfect match for manual manoeuvres. Although comparatively light, it feels robust and well built enough to withstand a certain amount of rough handling or carriage. My DSLRs are well built but I wouldn’t dream of taking them out without the protection of their padded cases, and to achieve the shooting range I would need to pack at least three more lenses in the kit bag, making the whole

operation much more of an expedition. So here is where the comparison is most relevant. I would have been not only surprised, but extremely hacked off if a camera that could fit in a handbag and costing only several hundred pounds, could approach the quality of output of my Fuji S5 and its prime Nikon lens costing several thousands. What the HS20 does do is produce results far better than the price differential would suggest, and with the practical handling advantage of portability and ease of use. So much so that I would certainly consider having one as an addition to the gadget bag, as emergency back-up, or chucked casually in the shoulder bag for times when I really don’t want to be carrying the full arsenal, but still be ready for the unexpected photo opportunity. Everyone will have a mobile phone to catch those spur of the moment images. What they probably won’t have immediately to hand is a half decent camera — one capable of capturing print quality reproduction. This is why a review of this model is relevant to this magazine and its audience. Several years ago I suggested the digital camera be regarded in the print shop as a portable scanner, and as such was compatible technology, and complimentary equipment to all the other copiers and printers in the studio. It is likely to be more easily acceptable today as almost everyone today is familiar with taking pictures with a digital device of one form or another — even if we have to do a double take when handed an obscure compact by a foreign tourist for a snap of them outside Brighton Pavilion ! The dilemma has always been a compromise between a device that can produce reasonable commercial results, and still be operated by comparative amateurs. Over the years I have seen the varied results of both — really good images taken almost by accident under favourable conditions, and awful images taken with supposedly professional cameras. The mistake as always is believing that it’s the camera not the photographer that takes the picture and not the other way around. The bridge camera is designed and aimed to span that gap between the amateur and the professional and as such can be criticised, I think unfairly, for failing to be less than perfect for both roles. The HS20 has a multitude of settings which may look daunting to the novice, but the fewer options the operator has, the less flexible the device. If you could make a camera completely idiot proof, you would hardly need an operator at all apart from switching it on and off. Face recognition and scene composing would do most of the rest of the technical stuff — like reminding you the lens cap is on and pointing it in the right direction. The controls layout, viewed from the top and back, and very much pro-DSLR style — main function mode dial with option buttons beside it and arranged either side of the large view screen — a screen that can be pulled out and tilted to ease viewing. As well as standard automatic modes, aperture and shutter priority and manual settings, the Fuji has the next best thing to dummy mode which is EXR, automatically choosing the optimum settings, including dynamic range and colour balance, for the conditions available as the device interprets it. If you should happen to know better than the camera, you can set your own custom shooting modes and save them, as well as saving two scene modes for shooting in similar conditions. One of these could be using external flash, in a studio location, and as well as the pop up on camera device, the HS20

has a hot shoe which will take both additional guns or an adaptor which will allow a sync lead to other external studio units. This is a major plus over other comparable cameras, and one feature which Fuji have sensibly retained over the years. The ability to override automatic settings and take control of external lighting makes this a bridge camera with professional potential. In common with semi-pro spec cameras, the HS20 will shoot RAW unprocessed files as well as a selection of Jpegs, or a combination of the two, at 4608 x 3456 pixels maximum size and the Fuji software that comes boxed with the kit is extremely good at extracting the best from the former. Better, I found than other manufacturers offerings. The camera has just a small 25 mb internal memory (once that would have seemed massive) and is served by SD/SDHC or SDXC cards which are now cheap and readily available. At maximum size, individual files occupy an average of 5.5mb. Oh and did I mention it will record nearly 30 minutes of HD movie and can take still snapshots of the film at the same time ? You can shoot lower quality clips and slow motion, all in camera, and record sound in stereo. It won’t email your pictures to a friend, but hey, what do you want a camera to do ? One review I read suggested the HS20 was comprised by the fact Fuji had already squeezed too many goodies in the picnic basket. Perhaps they have but in a demand led market one more feature scores points against the opposition. As I have to stress, other bridge cameras are available. This has been one of them.

Now it’s gone one step further: Its existing energy management system has been certified as DIN EN 16001 compliant. ybrid, who supply Mimaki printers in the UK and Ireland would like to share this latest use of one of their machines with the readers of Copy Shop News… Meeting up with a rising star of the UK fashion industry was bound to be inspiring and as Sam Cotton from the very much on the radar Agi & Sam label enjoyed a day out from London at his print supplier; Macclesfield based R A Smart, Hybrid tagged along to see what was round the corner for the exciting, young, menswear brand. Becoming very well known in the right circles for their print inspired menswear collections, Sam Cotton and Agape Mdumulla founded Agi & Sam in January 2010 with the fundamental thought of integrating bespoke print with a sense of humour into their work. Their association with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen and Armand Basi — amongst others — has stood them in good stead and it’s easy to forget that Cotton only graduated from the University of Lincoln’s illustration course in 2008. Meeting Mdumulla; himself a Manchester College of Art graduate from the same year — whilst working together at Alexander McQueen, they’re now moving their brand upwards at an impressive pace, and pioneering some standout work along the way.

With all the benefits (to manufacturer and consumer) of ease of printing, wear and care, it has great potential to fit into their new range and it’s one that Cotton’s clearly excited about. “Dye sublimation is such an integral part of fashion printing and for next season we’re looking to mix natural cloths with man made fabrics in a contemporary and clean collection.” One thing he’s surprised about though is the lack of capacity for digital print provision onto polyester in the UK. “The majority of polyester is being printed for soft signage, sportswear or the flag industry,” agrees Mighall, “and whilst there are a number of well known bureau services for printing natural fabrics, I’m not surprised that Agi & Sam initially struggled to find a print partner for its polyester work.”

Agi & Sam produced its first commercial work not much more than a year ago, describing it at the time as “A fully committed menswear collection”. The company has embarked on the usual hard graft to gain the necessary uplift in a famously tough industry, and Cotton admits that they are effectively building an expensive portfolio. They’re now at the stage where well known labels request freelance projects — so together, he and Mdumulla are consulting for the big names and gaining the exposure that will elevate their brand. “With fashion, you have to make a scene,” says Cotton. “Everything we do is tarnished with humour. We’re making print based catwalk collections and getting noticed for it, but show by show, we’re pulling it back to a more normal perspective — we just had to create a fuss to get noticed at the outset.”

The purpose of Cotton’s visit to Macclesfield is to discuss fabric sourcing with senior partner at R A Smart; Magnus Mighall. His company is a well know print provider for fashion, furnishings and sportswear and consistently has a number of household names’ designs running through their substantial digital or high end silk screen print facility. It’s Paris Fashion Week and the resulting spring / summer 2012 collection that’s closest to both their minds today, and although digital print has brought deadlines much closer to delivery dates, there’s still a body of work to get through. “Finding the right fabric remains a challenge,” says Mighall, “Although there are fewer obstacles now, as we can digitally print to almost any material with either dye sublimation, reactive, acid or pigment inks.” Cotton agrees to this, remarking on the frustrations he faces, “The hardest thing has been sourcing interesting fabrics.” The one he’s keenest on tying down is a sweatshirt jersey with a looped, fleecy back to it. “It’s the most popular product in our range,” he says, “and to find one that’s printable will be a real winner.” They’ll produce this next collection on the same digital printer that brought the plaudits and awards at London Fashion Week earlier in 2011. Their Spring / Summer 2011 collection entitled “Tabasco, Tequila and Tomato Juice” was inspired by many facets of Central American society and delivered menswear, shoes and millinery that sported vibrant colour blocks and traditional cuts embellished with powerful printed patterns. The Mimaki Tx400-1800D textile inkjet printer that R A Smart used is capable of printing both direct and via transfer paper to the polyesters that make up the majority of Agi & Sam’s range. Long rid of an ancient reputation of being an unfashionable and unpleasant to

The sample fabrics that R A Smart will produce for Agi & Sam to create their next runway pieces will be short work for the Mimaki — barely a few hours printing — but it’s sowing the seeds for the volume work that comes off the back of a successful collection launch. The beauty of digital lies in the ease of delivery of the short runs required for just such a project, and not that many years ago, it would have been a very different story for designers like Mdumulla and Cotton to get their work off the ground. Cotton is completely accepting of this and sees digital textile printing — and his knowledge of it — as core to what their label offers. “A lot of people don’t really know much about the choice of processes, or how versatile digital printing is. What we’re keen on harnessing is where we can take it.” The success of the Mimaki printed first collection was recognised by leading publications like Vogue, ID and Dazed and the awareness this created has seen something of a spike in demand at R A Smart, with a number of designers looking at similar projects shortly after Agi & Sam’s showing at London. So saying, Cotton’s not one for counting his chickens. “We had this plan. We hit all our targets. We delivered what we’d hoped for,” he recalls, “But you know what? We could have done all this and had everyone hate it!” There goes the fickleness of fashion, but with a drive towards delivering their captivating designs on new ecologically savvy cloths, recycled polyesters and other challenging fabrics, Agi & Sam are happy working on the new, while others have yet to embark on the present. www.agiandsam.com, www.rasmart.co.uk, www.hybridservices.co.uk

The Guinness Book of Female Records CAR PARKING: The smallest kerbside space successfully reversed into by a woman was one of 19.36m (63ft 2 ins), equivalent to three standard parking spaces, by Miss Emma Hawley, driving an unmodified Vauxhall Nova ‘Swing’ on 12th October 2000. She started the manoeuvre at 11.15am in Reading, Berkshire, and successfully parked within three feet of the pavement, 8 hours and 14 minutes later. There was slight damage to the bumpers and wings of her own and two adjoining cars, as well as a shop frontage and two lamp posts. INCORRECT DRIVING: The longest journey completed with the handbrake on was one of 50.4km (31 miles) from Stranraer to Holyhead by Ms Joanne Hutchins (GB) at the wheel of a Saab 900 on the 2nd April 1987. Ms. Hutchins smelled burning two miles into her journey at Aird but pressed on to Holyhead with smoke billowing from the rear wheels. This journey also holds the records for the longest completed journey with the choke fully out and the right indicator flashing. SHOP DITHERING: The longest time spent dithering in a shop was 12 days between 21st August and 2nd September 1995 by Ms Jacqui Wall (GB) in the Buxton Branch of Dorothy Perkins. Entering the shop on a Saturday morning, Ms Wall could not choose between two near identical dresses which were both in the sale. After one hour, her boyfriend, sitting on a chair by the changing room with his head in his hands, told her to buy both. Ms Wall eventually bought one for £12.99, only to return the next day and exchange it for the other one. To date, she has yet to wear it. Ms Wall also holds the record for window shopping longevity, when, starting September 12th 1995, she stood motionless gazing at a pair of shoes in Clinkard’s window in Kidderminster for 3 weeks and two days before eventually going home. JUMBLE SALE MASSACRE: The greatest number of old ladies to perish whilst fighting was at jumble sale in 1998, at a Methodist Church Hall in Castleford, West Yorkshire on February 12th 1991. When the doors opened at 10.00am, the initial scramble to get in cost 16 lives, a further 25 being killed in the crush at the first table. A seven-way skirmish then broke out over a pinafore dress costing 10p which escalated into a full scale melee resulting in another 18 lives being lost. A pitched battle over a headscarf then ensued and quickly spread throughout the hall,

claiming 39 old women. The jumble sale raised GBP 5.28 for local boy scouts. TALKING ABOUT NOTHING: Miss Rachel Woodward (GB) and Miss Alex Hayman (GB) sat in a kitchen in Bristol, Avon and talked about nothing whatsoever for four and a half months from 1st May to 7th August 1997, pausing only for coffee, cakes and toilet visits. Throughout the whole time, no information was exchanged and neither woman gained any new knowledge whatsoever. The outdoor record for talking about nothing is held by Mrs Elizabeth Wheeler (GB) and her neighbour Mrs Charmaine Woodward (GB) of Ipswich, who between 11th November 1983 and 12th January 1984 chuntered on over the fence in an unenlightening dialogue lasting almost 62 days until Mrs Woodward remembered she’d left the bath running. GOSSIPING: On February 18th 1992, Miss Lisa Henshall, a close friend of Miss Caroline Anderson popped round for a cup of tea and a chat, during the course of which she told Miss Anderson, in the strictest confidence, that she was having an affair with the butcher. After Miss Henshall left at 2.10pm, Miss Anderson immediately began to tell everyone, swearing them all to secrecy. By 2.30pm, she had told 128 people of the news. By 2.50pm it had risen to 372 and by 4.00pm in the afternoon, 2,774 knew of the affair, including the local Amateur dramatic Society, several knitting circles, a coachload of American tourists which she flagged down… and the butcher’s wife! When a tired Miss Anderson went to bed at 11.55pm that night, Miss Henshall’s affair was common knowledge to a staggering 75,338 people, enough to fill Wembley Stadium. GROUP LOO VISITS: The record for the largest group of women to visit a loo simultaneously is held by 147 workers at the Department of Social Security, Longbenton. At their annual Christmas celebration at a night club in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on October 12th 1994, Miss Kate Downton got up to go to the loo and was immediately followed by 146 other members of the party. Moving as a mass, the group entered the ladies at 9.52pm and, after waiting for everyone to finish, emerged 2hrs 37minutes later. FILM CONFUSION: The greatest length of time a woman has watched a film with her boyfriend without asking a stupid plot-related question was achieved on the 28th October 1990, when Miss Jessica Avery sat down with her boyfriend to watch ‘The Ipcress File’. She watched in silence for a breath-taking 2 mins 40

This broke her own record set in 1962 when she sat through 2mins 38 secs of ‘633 Squadron’ before asking, ‘is this a war film, is it?’ SINGLE BREATH SENTENCE: An Australian woman became the first ever to break the thirty minute barrier for talking without drawing breath. Miss Karen Townsend, 25 of Queensland smashed the previous record of 23 minutes when she excitedly reported an argument she’d had in the butchers to her neighbour. She ranted on for a staggering 32 minutes and 12 seconds without pausing for air, before going blue and collapsing in a heap on the ground. She was taken to Radcliffe Infirmary in a wheelbarrow but was released later after check-ups. At the peak of her mammoth motor mouth marathon, she achieved an unbelievable 680 words per minute, repeating the main points of the story an amazing 114 times whilst her neighbour, Miss Julie-Ann Stark, nodded and tutted. The last third of the sentence was delivered in a barely audible croak, the last two minutes being mouthed only, accompanied by vigorous gesticulations and indignant spasms. TRAFFIC LIGHT COSMETICS: The longest spell spent oblivious to traffic lights whilst applying make up was one of 1hr 51mins and 38secs by Miss Natalie Haynes at a road junction in the centre of Guildford on the 1st June 2001. Miss Haynes, a piano teacher, beautified herself through cycles of the light, creating a tailback of irate motorists stretching 28 miles towards Brighton.

The Zoo A bloke starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks. The first is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. He starts on this when suddenly a huge fish leaps out and bites him. He is not going to let a fish have a go so he beats the offending fish to death with a spade. Realising that his boss is not going to be best pleased, he tries to find a way to hide the dead fish. He hits on the brilliant idea of giving the fish to the lions as lions will eat anything. So he throws the fish into the lion’s cage. He then moves on to his second job, which is to clear out the monkey house. He goes in and a couple of chimps start throwing coconuts at him. Un-amused he swipes at the chimps with his spade, killing them instantly. He’s really worried now, so what does he do? He feeds the chimps to the lions, because lions eat anything. He hurls them into the lion’s cage. Anyway, he moves on to his last job, which is to collect honey from South American bees. He starts on this and quickly gets attacked by the bees. Alarmed, he grabs his spade and smashes the bees as hard as he can, squashing them to death. By this point he is not too worried about the death of bees as he knows what to do by now. He throws them into the lion’s cage, because lions eat anything. Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo. It wanders up to another lion and says ‘What’s the food like in here?’. The other lion says: ‘Absolutely brilliant, today we had Fish, Chimps and Mushy Bees’

Fishy Tale

A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a wellknown heart surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was there, waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey, Doc, can I ask you a question?”

Two salesmen buddies are fishing, but they haven’t caught anything all day. Then, another fisherman walks by with a huge load of fish. They ask him “excuse me, but where did you get all those fish?” The other fisherman replies,” If you just go down the stream until the water isn’t salty, there are a ton of hungry fish.” They thank him and go on their way. 15 minutes later, one salesman says to the other “fill the bucket up with water and see if the water is salty.” He dips the bucket in the stream and drinks some. “Nope. Still salty.” 30 minutes later, he asks him to check again. “Nope, still salty.” One our later they check again. “Nope. Still salty.” “This isn’t good,” the fishy salesman finally says. “We have been walking for almost two hours and the water is still salty!” “I know,” says the other. “And the bucket is almost empty!”
