Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise is Colour of the Year 2010

‘Turquoise Transports us to an Exciting, Tropical Paradise, while offering a sense of protection and healing in stressful times’ Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company and authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, has announced PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the colour of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of well-being. “In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of colour,” explains Helmut Eifert, Vice President Strategic Business Development PANTONE and X-Rite. “It is believed to

be a protective talisman, a colour of deep compassion and healing, and a colour of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of colour word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.” Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a colour that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors. With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other colour in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is cautiously welcoming the Government’s concessions to small businesses over pension reform. The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Yvette Cooper has announced what she called “the most radical change to workplace entitlements since the introduction of the national minimum wage”. From October 2012, it will be compulsory for businesses with more than 120,000 staff to pay into a national pension scheme for their employees. When the reforms were first announced in 2006, following the Turner Report a year earlier, it was feared that businesses of all sizes would be forced to pay identical compulsory pension contributions at the same time, giving small firms no time to adjust to the additional expense and red tape. A survey carried out by the FPB following

the initial announcement revealed that 70% of respondents were concerned they would not be able to afford the original proposals and believed they would damage their businesses. In all, 64% said introducing compulsory pension contributions would prevent them from employing more people, 42% said they would prevent them investing in their businesses. Just 13% said the proposals would have no impact. Arguments made by FPB members surveyed included that private businesses were increasingly subsidising an overinflated public sector, that compulsory pension contributions amounted to an additional tax and that the reforms would force them to make redundancies. However, following Yvette Cooper’s announcement smaller firms are being given some breathing space. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees will not be forced to comply until 2016.

trend-setting with yellow-greens. In fashion, Turquoise makes a statement that can look elegant and dressy in fine silk and gemstones, or casual and fun in cotton and athletic apparel. Because of its versatility, Turquoise is a great accent colour in jewellery, purses, shoes, hair accessories and even nail polish for women, and ties, shirts and sportswear for men. Additionally, Turquoise is one of 3,000 colours available in Pantone’s line of superior-quality, eco-friendly paint. PANTONE Paints combine the accuracy of PANTONE colours with the beauty of high-performance Dutch paints. Perfect for a powder room or bedroom, Turquoise is an evocative, spa-like hue that adds an undertone of warmth and excitement to any cool space. In the kitchen, Turquoise adds a unique flare to tabletop and appliances. www.pantone.com.

Small businesses given breathing space over pension reform but fear sting in the tail

In addition, the minimum employer contribution – which is set to rise to 3% by 2017 - is being staggered to give small businesses time to adjust. Initially, it will start at just 1%. Following the Turner Report’s publication a committee of MPs was appointed to seek the views of employers’ organisations, economists and business groups including the FPB. “We were listened to and our initial fears that these compulsory pensions contributions would hit small businesses too quickly for them to adjust have to some degree been addressed,” said the FPB’s Director of Human Resources, Nick Palin. “However, there remain serious concerns that small firms, which comprise more than 99% of all businesses in the UK and account for 59% of the private sector working population, will ultimately bear the brunt of the pensions crisis and that job creation will suffer as a result.”

you entered the New Perspective go fourth Have two sides competition? with Duplo Finisher Digital printer New Perspective have installed their fourth Duplo DC645 Multi Finisher making them the biggest UK user of Duplo’s flagship digital finishing product, claiming the product is the “best available on the market today”. The Kent-based firm, established in 1987, were early pioneers of short-run personalised print solutions and have undertaken rapid recent growth of late, doubling their turnover in the past five years by developing their bespoke greetings card service with two HP Indigo presses, four Duplo finishers and a bespoke custom-built pre-press software to streamline their workflow. Owner Dan Dickey puts this success down to a simple ethos: “Since the business started in the back bedroom of my house in Whitstable years ago to the present day, we have always provided quality short run print with guaranteed quick turnaround times for our customers. We were early adopters of digital print and we have used our experience in this market to develop a seamless workflow which enables us to provide next-day turnaround whatever the run length.” New Perspective owe much of their growth to the personalised Christmas card service they offer which saw them produce a phenomenal four million cards in 2009; the key reason behind their investment in a fourth Duplo. The DC-645 is a multi finishing device which enables cutting, slitting and creasing functions all in one single sheet pass, ideal for applications such as greetings cards which require 4-side trimming and a centre crease. Dickey believes that understanding the importance of the finishing end of the print cycle has been key to New Perspective’s continued success. “My business needs fast, high quality finishing that keeps pace with our digital printing and that gives us the flexibility to enhance what we offer our customers” comments Dickey. “It is my belief that Duplo’s DC-645 is the best equipment available to a digital printer today – quick set-up, fully automatic and a flat paper path.” “Our philosophy from the outset was to be able to

let our customers be as creative as possible with their print requirements and not to be restricted by the constraints of a plant list. If customers require a bespoke product, we can easily adapt our operations without compromising turnaround times because of the thousands of applications you can finish with the DC-645. That is why the 645 is so key to us and the reason we have invested in a fourth!”. The company were the first to take Duplo’s first ever multi finisher, the DC-545 back in 2004, replacing it with their first DC-645 in 2009 and they could not be happier with their investment. “With the DC-645, Duplo took all of the good things of the 545 and improved certain features to meet the demands of the modern printer. The product is reliable, accurate and importantly is totally flexible, which is why they are the backbone of our business. We simply would not be able to offer the first-class service to customers that we do if we had to crease and cut offline as two separate stages of the workflow.” “We have the proven formula and it would have been easy to sit back and admire our own growth, however I am constantly looking for new opportunities and my aim is to double the size of business again in the next five years”, concludes Dickey. Five lucky winners of the new Two Sides competition will see sustainable forestry and papermaking in action Two Sides is offering five competition winners the opportunity to visit the forestry and papermaking facilities of one of Europe’s leading paper producers. The competition is part of the Two Sides multifaceted awareness campaign recently launched across the UK to promote the sustainability of print and paper as ‘Renewable, Recyclable and Powerful’. “The prize is a fantastic opportunity to spend time in some of Europe’s forests, seeing how trees are harvested and then replanted, and then follow the pulping process through to final paper production,” says Two Sides spokesman Martyn Eustace. “Seeing paper being made, and realising how trees are a natural and renewable resource is always a trip that people remember. There are those who believe that our forests are diminishing but in Europe, where more than 90% of our paper comes from, forests have grown by 30% since 1950 and are increasing by 1.5 million football pitches every year.” Hosting the visit for five winners are Stora Enso, UPM Kymmene, Mondi Uncoated Fine Papers, grupo Portucel Soporcel and Sappi. These organisations will look after the winners and their colleagues over two or three days, and ensure that there is time not only for discovering more about the industry but also relaxing and enjoying some of the local hospitality. It is easy to enter the competition on the Two Sides website (www. twosides.info), where visitors can also find facts and figures plus general information about the sustainable graphic communication supply chain. For more details, go to www.twosides.info.

Donald Murray Paper supports young artists in Glasgow

A record 1,700 school age children entered the Glasgow Schools Calendar competition in the hope of having their work included in the 2010 calendar that is distributed to schools, libraries and council offices throughout the City. In addition this year three winners from the separate St Enoch Centre art competition won places in the calendar. Donald Murray Paper, a division of PaperCo, was a co-sponsor of the competition along with Ricoh Document Management again. Donald Murray Paper supplied 50,000 sheets of Lumigloss 200gsm paper for the calendar which is designed in-house at Glasgow City Council and printed by Ricoh Document Management. The calendar features 13 works of art from pupils at 13 different schools (one for the cover and then 12 for the months of the year). The winners, from primary and secondary schools, were: Heeyoun Hur, Kevin McKenna, Chloe MacDonald, Lily Meehan, Meghan Campbell, Dionne Stroud, Scott Austin, Lynsey Brown, Sophie Johnston, Helen Murray, Kirsty Donnelly, Magdileena Rodrick and Zain Azhar. Each received £100 and had their work displayed at the St Enoch Centre. “PaperCo has a very strong corporate social responsibility programme and as part of that we at Donald Murray Paper take very seriously our links with education. Each year we are more and more impressed by the depth and breadth of talent shown. It will cheer the hearts of many throughout this year,” says Karen McNee, corporate sales. 5

BPIF welcomes profitability improvement from Autumn Seasonal Trade Boost 62% of firms reported a pick-up in trading conditions in the autumn period, according to the latest Printing Outlook survey report published by the BPIF. Only 10% of those asked saw a deterioration. The latest survey was carried out online during the period 1-11 December 2009. 109 companies responded to the survey, employing 9,540 people with a turnover of over £1.0 billion. While welcoming the improvement, the BPIF warns that the improvement is seasonal and that survey respondents do not expect this boost in trade to continue into the normally slower winter period. 56% expect activity to decline between the beginning of December and the end of February. Export trade is expected to buck the slow-down, reflecting relative improvements in overseas economies, but prospects for domestic demand remain weak for the next three months. With just 9% bullish about winning new business, compared with 47% predicting a reduction, production levels are also expected to decrease. 51% of respondents predict a decline in output, as against 17% expecting a rise. The recent pick-up in trade has helped to improve profitability among print firms. Just 3% are loss making (compared with 17% three months ago), while the number in the 4.5-7.5% range jumped to 40% compared with 7% at the time of the last survey. However it is be no means certain whether this can be sustained: 55% believe margins will narrow over the coming three months which compares with just 9% expecting improvement. Competition remains tough with no signs of upward price movement; in fact further cuts are expected by a third of firms. No printer raised prices – the first time that this has been recorded since the first quarter of 1991. Not surprisingly, margins remain under pressure as a result, with almost half of printers (47%) reporting no change in margins over the past three months. That said, 21% reported an improvement: the best reading from the survey for a year. The fact that costs were contained for the majority of print firms during the autumn has certainly helped: although 31% reported that paper and board costs had risen over the past three months, 69%

said they were paying no more and no less than before. In the run up to IPEX, it is interesting to note that investment plans are being reviewed as the credit squeeze starts to ease. The change seems to fit with the start of an improvement in bank lending, albeit from a low base. Credit lines appear to be returning, bad debt seems to be on the wane, and the availability of bank lending is reported to be improving to a limited degree. However the real cost of borrowing may still be prohibitive for many and the uncertain state of trade may still delay investment decisions and borrowing requirements. BPIF Corporate Affairs Director Andrew Brown says “The normal boost in trade that we have come to expect in the printing sector in the run up to Christmas didn’t happen at all last year and so the uplift reported by respondents to our autumn survey is very welcome news indeed. However it is important to remember that this improvement is due to seasonal factors. Uncertainty about the prospects for the winter months is clearly reflected in less sanguine forecasts for this period, with 56% believing that trade will worsen, compared with just 15% that believe the recent momentum will continue through the winter. Trading conditions remain extremely testing.” For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com

Printers’ Charitable Corporation and the Stationers’ Foundation join forces

A rapidly changing printing industry is forcing charities in the sector to consider how best to deliver services and utilise resources. In response, the Printers’ Charitable Corporation and the Stationers’ Foundation have agreed to work collaboratively for the first time. Under the agreement, the PCC will handle the day-to-day administration of grant applications and financial support on behalf of the Stationers’ Foundation, the charity arm of the Stationers’ Livery Company. Responsibility for approval of the Foundation’s grants will remain with the Stationers’ trustees. Ian Larkham, the PCC’s Operations Director, says: “Charities are not exempt 6

from the challenges the printing industry faces in today’s economic climate, so it’s vital that organisations in the sector act strategically to remain relevant to the people they were set up to support. As the national charity for the printing industry, it’s a logical step to pool knowledge and resources with the Stationers’ Foundation. We see this as the blueprint for our future operations – remaining as a separate organisation, but working closely with others in the industry.” “The Stationers’ Livery Company has responded throughout its 600-year history to the evolving printing industry,” adds David Allan, Chair of the Stationers’ Foundation. “Through our charitable

activities, we remain firmly committed to providing bursaries for the next generation and supporting educational initiatives like the supplementary schools programme. This is in parallel with financial support for our members in the industry and allied trades. Partnering with the PCC lets us tap into its administrative capabilities and use our resources in the most efficient way to help people.” For further information, please contact Ian Larkham, Operations Director, the Printers’ Charitable Corporation - 01293 542 820, ian@ printerscharitablecorporation.co.uk or see www.printerscharitablecorporation. co.uk, www.stationers.org

IPEX 2010 launches ipex tv The organisers of Ipex 2010 have launched IpexTV – a new section on Ipex’s website (www.ipex.org) to engage with both its exhibitor and visitor communities in a more creative and interactive way. The Ipex team will upload regular ‘video-blogs’ to communicate news about Ipex 2010 initiatives, visitor and exhibitor updates as well as broadcast short interviews with prominent industry figures. What’s more, IpexTV is open to anyone who would like to provide feedback on what Ipex means to them. The organisers are challenging the international print community to use their mobile phones, digital video cameras or webcams to tell them about their objectives for visiting Ipex, expectations of the upcoming event or general thoughts about the show. Anyone interested in participating should go to www.ipex.org/meanstoyou to find out more. The most creative videos will be posted on the Ipex website so peers will be able to comment and vote on the clips. Videos with the most votes will be put to a final and the winner will receive a VIP Ipex experience Comments Nick Craig Waller, Ipex 2010 Marketing Director: “Following the revamp of our website with a number of enhanced features for visitors and exhibitors, our web traffic has gone through the roof, indicating the importance of ipex.org as an important planning and research tool. Valuable cash awards for young people in 2010! The Print Futures Awards sponsored by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Unite the Union and the Printers’ Charitable Corporation (soon to be known as The Printing Charity) have been launched for 2010. The programme was set up to help young people fund their training for a career in the printing and graphic arts industries. Awards of £2,500 each are available to young people aged 16-30 years who are resident in the UK. The closing date for entries is 9 April, 2010 and interviews for those shortlisted will be held in May and June. The awards will be presented on 20 July in London. Applications are also welcome from those already undergoing company training. Successful applicants in this category will receive an award of £1,250, with the balance of £1,250 to be met by their employers. Dale Wallis, BPIF’s Membership Director, says: “We are delighted to launch the Print Futures Awards for the seventh year. In these tough economic times, it is crucial that we help young people to secure funding for their training in print and the graphic arts.” Application forms are available from Terry Ulrick, the Print Futures Awards Secretary, telephone: 01444 831 918 or email: terryulrick@tucommunications.co.uk

How three winners in 2009 are using their awards: Suzie Eland: “I am now studying part-time at university for a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design. My award has paid for the first two years of my tuition fees.” Julia Inshaw: “I have completed the first of four modules of the Professional Diploma in Marketing and am currently studying for the second and third modules. I aim to complete the Diploma by June this year.” Marc Goodwin: “The award has helped greatly because the £2,500 covers the full amount of the remaining tuition costs for my Impress Degree. Since the awards, I have also been promoted to Trainee Print Process Technician at work.” 8

going one step further with IpexTV. “From choice, innovation, knowledge to business opportunities, Ipex means a lot of different things to different people. While there is a fun element to IpexTV, there is also a more serious message here. For the success of Ipex, it is absolutely crucial that we keep our ears to the ground and communicate as much feedback from all our stakeholders with regards to the event. Ipex TV is another vehicle to achieve exactly that by encouraging greater communication throughout the industry.” Following the speedy spread and development of social media, the Ipex team has already begun to embrace various platforms successfully by building online communities on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter where their dedicated groups discuss Ipex-related questions. In addition, the team uses these sites to conduct quick surveys and keep followers informed about the latest event developments, updates and news. “With Ipex being an event where new technology comes to life – many prototypes seen at drupa will become commercially available at Ipex – it’s only appropriate that we should embrace technology in the run up to the show which will further allow us to keep an open dialogue with as many international groups in the industry as possible”, Nick Craig Waller concludes.

Mimaki has announced the launch of its new large format direct and dyesublimation printer – the 3.2m wide JV5320DS. The new machine enables direct printing on polyester substrates at high speeds and with excellent results. The highly acclaimed productivity and quality features of JV5 have been merged in this model to produce outstanding print on textiles on a super wide scale. The JV5-320DS will command a slight premium over the current solvent version due to the additional features of the new machine. The JV5-320DS is based on Mimaki’s award-winning JV5-320S solvent super wide printer and is designed for high productivity and accurate print quality requirements in the outdoor signage market. As this market is experiencing growing demand for outside signage on polyester textiles, for instance, for flags, banners and soft signage that are better catered for with water based dye-sublimation inks, Mimaki has designed 10

the JV5-320DS. The majority of the benefits from the current JV5-320S are incorporated into the JV5-320DS in such a way that the highest productivity and excellent image quality are achieved on this direct and dye-sublimation printer. During printing on polyester substrates, inks can easily pass through the fabric underneath. Therefore, the JV5-320DS is equipped with an ink catching trough to prevent the ink that penetrates the fabric staining the back side. In addition, a new drying fan will dry inks directly after printing in order to prevent media sticking during the winding process. The JV5-320DS also features Mimaki’s new Spray Suppressor System that improves printing consistency even further. John de la Roche; National Sales Manager for Mimaki’s UK & Ireland distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd welcomes the introduction of the JV5-320DS; “We’re answering market demands for production printing of grand format soft signage with

this machine. The desire to print directly to polyester seems to be on everyones lips at the moment and with the new JV5-320DS, it’s a commercial reality.” The JV5-320DS achieves a maximum resolution of 1,440 dpi and is equipped with Mimaki’s AMF (Automatic Media Feeder) for stable feeding of heavy media up to 130kg. Print speeds vary according to resolution between 60.3 sq m/h (540 x 720 dpi) for long distance viewing to close up viewing of 44 sq m/h (at 540 x 1,080 dpi). Mimaki’s proven Sb52 dye-sublimation ink with their superior colouration characteristics are used – delivering vibrant colour and deep hues. The printer also features the optional, MBIS (Mimaki Bulk Ink Supply System) that provides an ink load of 2 litre containers and thus caters for long uninterrupted print runs while at the same time saving money on ink. Further details of the new machine can be had by contacting Hybrid Services on, 01270 501900 www.hybridservices.co.uk.

New compact desktop LED UV printer from Mimaki

Mimaki have introduced the UJF-3042, a desktop size UV LED inkjet printer that combines Mimaki’s award winning UV LED technology with a strong heritage in UV inkjet printing. The new machine is aimed at companies wishing to produce high quality output on materials up to A3 in size (300 x 420mm) with precise and vivid images onto uncoated substrates. The UJF-3042 incorporates a newly developed inkjet print head that perfectly suits the requirements of this compact printer and enables an exceptionally good value for money proposition. Its cost-effective features include very low energy consumption through the implementation of LED UV curing as well as its ability to print to a vast choice of uncoated media. For screen printers, there are now no start-up costs and short run production is perfectly suited to the machine. Therefore not only can badges, cards, packaging, labels, stickers and display products be created but also the personalised imprinting of novelties, nameplates, electronics cases and other industrial products. Capable of outputting process and white ink at up to 1,440 x 1,200dpi and printing with a variable dot, the Mimaki UJF-3042 accommodates uncoated materials up to 50mm thick. Glass, metal, wood, plastic and acrylic can all be printed to, and with high speed printing of around four minutes for an A3 imprint, including white, it’s an impressively quick solution. The inherent nature of a UV print forms a raised finish, so Braille and textured effects can also be produced on small signs and packaging mockups. The LED UV Curing technology has multiple advantages over competing technologies – its low power consumption not only benefits running costs, but also – because of the small amount of heat generated – materials that are heat sensitive can be printed to without fear of the media deforming. The inclusion of white ink means coloured, transparent and metallic substrates can be printed to with the white as an over or under printed feature, either as a pad or in perfect registration. Mimaki include their powerful 16-bit Postscript RIP software as part of the package. Visit www.hybridservices.co.uk or by calling 01270 501900.

DUPLO SPEARHEADS FINISHING MARKET WITH NEW FOLDING OPTION Duplo International has extended the inline capabilities of its popular DC-645 slitter/cutter/creaser and DC-445 creaser range by adding a knife fold attachment to the single system operation. With the new Integrated Folding System, printers can now fully finish different applications such as greeting cards, CD covers, folded ‘tent’ business cards, brochures, leaflets and many more without additional operators. The knife folder incorporates two knife folds making it ideal for parallel fold applications such as letter and gate folds. With a speed of up to 50 sheets per minute, the new folder matches the capabilities of Duplo’s creasers and can also be by-passed for no-fold applications. The Integrated Folding System can also incorporate other elements such as a cross-and straight-conveyor as well as simple and more sophisticated high capacity stackers specifically designed to neatly stack and retain even heavier jobs such as folded card stock. The crossconveyor version keeps single batch outputs in sequence for applications such as photos, coupons and personalised direct mail. 12

The modular range enables customers to configure as many as eighteen different arrangements to suit their individual requirements and match the flexibility of jobs that can be run on the Duplo range of finishers for digital colour print. As a result, the Integrated Folding System can easily handle items printed in multiple-up formats, making it suitable for general commercial folding applications as well as sorting requirements for sequentially printed jobs. Comments Peter Jolly, Marketing Manager, Duplo UK: “Our DC-645 slitter/cutter/creaser and the DC-445 creaser have been extremely successful in the growing Print on Demand market. Companies need to do small jobs very quickly and accurately so it’s vital that margins gained during the printing process will not be lost in the finishing department. By adding a conveyor, folder and stacker option to our creaser product range, the flexible Integrated Folding System allows printers to automate the complete job set-up from one point and finish work in one pass with only one operator, resulting in considerable cost savings.” www.duplouk.com Tel.01372 468131

EFI Announces New VUTEk Superwide Printer

EFI has unveiled the VUTEk® QS220, a direct to substrate, two metre UV-curing flatbed printer with High-Definition Print (HDP) quality and superwide productivity that boasts lower ink running costs than traditional wide format printers and unique application abilities that allow print businesses to expand into higher end, premium margin applications. The QS220 is ideal for businesses that want to fuel profitability by adding flexible, production level equipment that will support their growth. “Unfortunately many print businesses are forced to choose between high production speeds and high image quality,” said EFI VUTEk senior vice president/general manager Dick Wissenbach. “The QS220 is an all in one printer; it has the speed to print 16 4’x8’ boards per hour as well as the ability to print in high definition. This is a great time to be involved in superwide format printing, and with pricing comparable to wide format printers, the QS220 is not only affordable, it’s a smart investment for any print business.” VUTEk’s HDP technology provides resolution up to 1080 dpi for dazzling graphics and sharp text. It produces four or six colour images, and features a special seventh channel for six variations of white ink. This configuration is unique to EFI and means the QS220 is capable of printing colour and white in three independent layers all in one pass for perfect registration and more advanced printing applications, which results in graphics that really pop. This in line, three layer white printing capability grants the ability to produce new, high margin applications that other businesses cannot provide, such as enhanced definition back-lit displays or layered, art quality graphics printed on dark substrates. The advanced technology of the QS220 allows it to effectively replace multiple wide format printers. Its small footprint and optional roll to roll capability fulfill the functions of multiple printers, especially with its production speeds of up to 750 square feet per hour, outstanding resolution and lower ink running costs. By utilising one ink set, the QS220 delivers enhanced reliability and performance on a wide range of substrates. For more information about the VUTEk QS220, visit www.efi.com/vutek.

Take a look at our simple, versatile & reliable machines...

Renz (UK) Limited Tel 01707 270001 www.renz.com sales@renz.co.uk

ON TRIAL

Xerox Cube & Toshiba 6530C January brought a wonderful head to head opportunity in the mid to high volume colour printer arena. CSN road tests are historically focused on each offering rather than comparisons; but with both the new Xerox colour Qube and new Toshiba Colour 6530C aimed at our 6600 print rooms which one would we spend our £15k to £20k on?

F

or circa another £10k you can include some fantastic finishing options — these prices surely warrant a serious look by all our shops — ranging from the High Street shop with two machines to full blown print rooms. Look out for our usual full report case studies on these Xerox and Toshiba models in the coming months, as this report in reality is based on initial findings which we will enlarge on with individual case studies. Our own print shop, Colourfast, sits somewhere in size around the middle of the 6600 print shops we report to. We run a large, fast digital print ‘press’ supported by four mid-volume, 30-40 ppm, ‘colour copy’, formally known as prints, on-line machines with scanners plus a handful of desktop laser printer type Xerox and Oki. We have all grown in much the same way. As the print volumes have increased on our existing kit, the maintenance costs have risen and we are then introduced to faster bigger kit that will absorb the volume at a reduced running cost. Better kit for less monthly spend delivering more profit and room to expand. Perfect scenario. Now the decision to put all your eggs in one basket and trade up to a ‘digital press’ bit of kit circa £100k plus must be considered with variable benefits. You don’t now have to invest huge money to acquire A3 service clicks at sub 5p including toner. Both of our trial machines can do this at a fraction of the investment. Alternatively compare the up time and features by running one of each or two or three of the same machine introduced here. For example three £15-20k Toshiba 6530C pro series will deliver a combined speed of 195 ppm. 14

Consider shifting your most-expensive-to-run serviced machines print runs onto this new kit and with volumes on your side your total monthly billing could be less than your current spend. To be fairer to both these models the improved print quality may justify further budget to attract more print. In particular the unique way the Xerox Qube breaks down the service charges to three bands of toner usage. This will attract new print customers to use colour that was before not within budget. Xerox invoice running costs through its normal FSMA agreement using three meter readings dependent on how much consumables are used in the production of each print. In short here are the bands and achievable break points: • Tier One: Useful Colour, up to 1.2% coverage — 0.5p; yes point five of a penny, ie a halfpenny. • Tier Two: Every Day Colour, up to 8% coverage — 2.5p • Tier Three: Expressive Colour — over 8% coverage — 5p To appreciate what billing category each job will run at is simple with a prescan quote. Three tier samples available printcoverage@ copyshopnews.co.uk Professional printers will decide to run existing repeat jobs on a Xerox Qube to save running costs and increase profit margins. When quoting for new business sight of the job will become as important as LFP poster work. Tier one will attract a lot of letterhead

work with tier two developing new markets for ‘spot’ full colour manuals, books and reports. Tier three will be for everything else, it will benefit from a cost ceiling of five pence as most existing service plans do. For a comparison with your present costs remember to add any toner charges you receive if you are on a not inclusive deal as both these manufacturers include all consumables, save paper, power and labour. Also check if you are being charged two clicks for A3? Ever since CSN broke the news of the installation of the UK’s first Xerox DC12 at Colourfast, clicking once for A3, every other manufacturer has been playing catch up. Certainly our Toshiba 310s purchased for their ability to print on 300gsm, another UK first, were available from dealers who could set their meters to click twice for A3 and even, if you can remember, the old A4R cassette. Our advice is to take a meter reading on all your kit, produce one copy of each size and check the meters again. Apologies to the worldly wise but some of you will be in for a shock. Never mind it will add to the savings when you switch to some new kit. If you are wondering how Xerox are offering such a small colour click rate, and only on the Qube, it is due to the print process not requiring either a drum or a fuser roller. The new Xerox ColorQube™ 9200 Series multifunction printer uses Xerox’s proven solid ink technology to the centre of a highly competitive market. At the heart of ColorQube is a print head that increases

ink flow 400 percent by packing in 880 nozzles — at twice the number per linear inch compared to prior print heads. Development of the miniscule nozzles (each only 37.5 microns wide) is considered a major achievement because they deliver higher flow rates despite their reduced size, says Steve Korol, a Xerox researcher who worked with his research and development team to engineer the print head. Each print head is about the size of a deck of cards and funnels molten solid ink through a complex network of channels to the nozzles, enabling colour printing at 85 pages per minute. The design features four print heads per printer totalling more than 3,500 ink nozzles. “This device opens up a huge market for Xerox,” said Don Titterington, vice president, print head and ink research and development at Xerox. “At 150 million drops per second, this is a breakthrough in how fast we can put ink on the page. That’s as many ink drops in a minute as there are people on the planet.” CSN readers that require samples can send files to ColourQubeSamples@ copyshopnews.co.uk For Toshiba 6520C Pro prints send files to ToshibaColourSamples@ copyshopnews.co.uk

One of each please Early indications of our own customers feed back on quality and finish show huge benefits on both systems, as usual customer preferences are difficult to satisfy with one piece of new technology. We will be doing our best to justify keeping both. More on each print system next month, in print and online www.copyshopnews.co.uk

SHOWTIME

It’s showtime

Printwear and Promotion’s annual exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham is proudly marking its 21st anniversary this year. The three day event, which takes place between February 28th and March 2nd, will feature the latest developments for printing on promotional goods and work wear.

T

he CSN reporting posse look forward to seeing friends old and new at the show which kicks off our exhibition calendar, or should we say CSN Year Planner. All the ticket and travel info was included in last months invitation to you all, for a refresher visit www. printwearandpromotion.co.uk Debbie Eales, editor of Printwear and Promotions magazine tracked down Exhibitions Manager, Richard Smith, to ask him what’s in store at this year’s action-packed event.

The Printwear & Promotion Show is celebrating 21 great years in 2010. Tell us a little bit about how the show has evolved over the years and what’s new? I have been involved with the Printwear & Promotion exhibition since 1993 and although the basics of the event remain unchanged in being an event to bring all that¹s best to the garment decoration market, fabric and machine technology, in particular, continue to bring the major changes to the visitor. Direct to garment printing has become more affordable and transfer technology offers a low cost, high quality and easy to apply decoration technique. Embroidery machines offer very high speeds

and single head machines are probably more popular than ever now that they can easily be linked together to allow a business to expand. The show has always been popular, but tell us why it is a must-do on the business calendar for both visitors and exhibitors? Printwear & Promotion continues to be the leading UK event in the garment decoration market, covering areas such as leisurewear, school wear, sportswear, the latest in embroidery, transfer and digital technology as well as ancillary products to every part of the market.

The hottest ticket in town

The prestigious line-up of printwear and promotions experts will make the new Knowledge Transfer Suite the hottest ticket in town. Here’s a look at the fascinating seminar programme for Printwear & Promotion 2010. If you don’t want to miss out, be sure to register online at www.printwearandpromotion.co.uk TARGET TRANSFERS

Sunday: Getting started in heat printing An explanation of how simple it is to get started in transfer printing, and how you can start making money instantly! An overview of the products and equipment needed, including advice on what to look for and how to ensure that you are getting value for money. The seminar features demonstrations of products and tips on how to ensure perfect results every time. It will also feature advice on how your business can grow with you and to make sure that the purchases that you make will stand the test of time. It will also touch on the importance of workflow and organisation, as when you are potentially dealing with large volumes, every second really does count. Monday: The versatility of heat transfer printing A heat press allows the user to decorate garments from dawn until dusk. At the same time, it also opens a lot of other doors and the opportunities are limitless. This seminar explores the many other revenue streams that are available through a heat press, and many ideas that are not obvious, but are profitable. There will also be advice on how you can achieve the result that your customer is after, no matter how complicated the design. You are not limited by the cutter or equipment that you possess; there is always a way to get the finished product to exact specification. Tuesday: How to heat apply to difficult substrates and how to achieve different finishes If only every job was as simple as a plain cotton T shirt. Unfortunately, life doesn¹t work like that! To make sure that you are getting the optimum use out of your heat press, this seminar will feature a range of tips and ideas to ensure that you are able to get the most from your heat press. It will look at ‘problem’ materials such as coated nylons and demonstrate how to make sure that the transfers adhere perfectly every time. In addition, it will examine the different methods available to achieve different finishes with transfers and vinyl, whether it is gloss, matt or multi-layered.

WILCOM

Sunday: A web site or web store? With over 70% of UK Internet users shopping online, it’s time to think about moving your static ‘brochure’ website to a sales generating web store. This session looks at the future of online shopping and what to think about when considering a web store. Monday: Back in 5: Don’t leave your online store unattended! The steps involved in setting up an online retail store are just like that of a physical retail store. Just like you wouldn’t leave your retail store without signage, or

18

nattended, your online store needs the same focus. This covers topics like finding premises, point of sale, customer service, and admin workflow. Tuesday: Getting traffic to your online store Unlike a physical retail store that may have passing street traffic or be situated in a shopping complex, your online store doesn’t! This session will cover some simple ways to drive traffic to your online store. Find out more about Search Engine Optimising, and other online marketing ideas.

VAL MUMBY

Sunday: How to be PR smart Val Mumby is the founder and managing director of PR agency Clareville Communications. SHOWTIME Tell us about some of the big names who are at P&P this year? In addition to many of the UK’s leading garment manufacturers and distributors including UKL, BTC, Ralawise, Prestige, Result, United Brands of Scandinavia, Headwear, Pencarrie and Beechfield, we also have the major distributor/ manufacturers on the machinery side ¬ YES Ltd, GS UK, Stocks Sewing Machines, D Roper/M&R, Xpres and AJS Embroidery to name just some. But it isn’t all about the big brands, is it? Tell us about some of the smaller companies who will be there - and also, those who will be exhibiting for the first time. Although we have many companies taking smaller size stands, I would not want the visitor to think that these are small companies. Printwear & Promotion has enjoyed regular support from companies such as Teamwear, Kwik Tapes, Pressmech, Majestic Towels, Golden Finishes and many others. Although their stands may not be among the largest, it is usually because their products do not require vast amounts of display space. There will be a number of new exhibitors at the event which include The Marketing Worx, Crazy Bags, Transfer Supplies Ltd, GK Marketing showing the Anatol range of screen print machines and also iGEM with an exciting new laser/ embroidery machine. The fashion shows are always hugely popular. What can we see this year? As you say, the professionally choreographed fashion shows are always very popular. Unfortunately I don¹t get a preview of the garments

that will be on the stage. I will therefore be among the visitors to learn all that is new to the garment side of the industry. It’s an opportunity for many of the brands to showcase what’s new in their 2010 catalogues. With the co-location of the International Promota Show in Hall 12 at the NEC, the Printwear & Promotion Show has a new dimension this year. How will that benefit visitors and exhibitors? The co-location with Promota offers the visitor far more products on the promotional gift side of this industry than has previously been available at Printwear & Promotion. Visitors to these events should note that although Printwear & Promotion opens on Sunday, February 28 to Tuesday, March 2, Promota will only be open on Monday and Tuesday, March 1 and 2. Visitors must register for each show. Tell us a little about the footfall? Is it correct to say that visitor numbers increase every year? Over the last seven years, footfall has increased year on year reaching a record 4292 in 2009. Is there anything special about the way the show is laid out this year? The major layout change is created by the co-location with Promota operating through shared facilities in the Hall 12 entrance foyer. And what about the seminar programme? Since we introduced the seminar programme some three years ago, it quickly became clear that the best

attended presentations were those that were information rich and helped delegates to take their businesses forward. This requirement is now reflected in the re-naming of the area as the Knowledge Transfer Suite. How long have you been organising the exhibition, and what memories do you have of previous shows? My first show was in 1993 and as for memories; it is always hard work, extremely interesting and great fun and a tremendous anti-climax when it is all over. What are you personally looking forward to about Printwear & Promotion 2010? I have always enjoyed learning about the new technologies. These can be in new machinery or fabric and ancillary product development. I also look forward to meeting up with exhibitors who over the years have become good friends. The show always has a great buzz about it and it’s a real opportunity to interact with potential customers. What feedback did you get from

exhibitors and visitors last year? The event’s success is borne out by the fact that exhibitors return year after year. This only happens if their attendance is successful. The P&P show seems to have something for everyone, doesn’t it? I would like to think that all aspects of our industry are covered — this could be from a pair of scissors through to the largest screen print and embroidery machines. It is the only UK event where the visitor will see all that is best in their industry and now with the added benefit of the International Promota Show co-location. Finally, how do people book a stand or register for the show? There is some stand space still available. For further information potential exhibitors can call me on 01622 699172 or email on rsmith@datateam.co.uk. Visitors can pre register for fast track access by visiting the Printwear & promotion website at www. printwearandpromotion.co.uk and clicking onto the ‘Register for P&P Live’ button on the right hand side.

CSMA DEVELOPMENT

2020 Vision — a decade of development

Sixteen years in and another ten to go to fulfil our members aspirations. CSMA Copy Shop Members Association has developed through open communications in our monthly trade magazine CSN. Should we change our name, offer more services or even charge for membership? It’s all up for discussion.

F

irstly we have always believed in our highly esteemed industry suppliers sponsoring our membership and thus contributing to a healthy customer base for themselves. They deserve to pay and will continue to sponsor the hard copy and live site of Copy Shop News. Unlike some publications that have gone completely virtual, CSN and our sister publication DPS News will always produce real printed magazines. Not only is tactile print more mobile and accessible it is better read and referred to than on screen only titles. You need hard copy to drive web publications and anyway we must all lead by example to keep our presses active. Our number one remit has always been to share best practice in print. This is made possible by our members contributions and requests. For example we are testing two new colour printers, preview on page 14, as a direct enquiry from CSN readers. Case studies are a great way to share road tests on new equipment with our beta test centre often making suggestions prelaunch that have resulted in modifications before general release. CSN enjoys reaching the parts other publications cannot reach as we are indeed a print for pay printer reporting to our professional colleagues, yes it really does take one to know one. We have declined opportunities of becoming a full on buyers group as this would result in losing our independent, no hidden agenda, opinion. We may make recommendations and even help start group purchasing schemes, after all we all benefit from being one of a united group of 6600 print shops. Imagine using this economy of scale when negotiating a group paper deal for our house white 80 gsm and say 110 colour print stock? Work in progress this one. Spicers will open a stationery account for any printers wanting to offer more stationery lines to end users. For many readers, offering more services will attract new customers and protect existing ones. We are aware of the SOHO, Small Office Home Office, 8 million customer base showing a preference for a one stop shop opportunity, contact 20

stationery@copyshopnews.co.uk we have plans to sell more allied services and different print formats and processes. Posting your customers print is a must for the future with mail sorting and processing under review. Members and suppliers with expertise in post are requested to contact features@copyshopnews.co.uk The Bank of Scotland merchant services group scheme has been well received with our special rates and hopefully as our membership increases we can exert pressure for younger print shops to be enrolled who historically may not have qualified as a single application. All group services are dealt with directly between each member and the supplier, but at a preferential group rate. We have no intent to be involved in the invoicing cycle as borne out in our UK print portal directory www.interprinter.co.uk Similar to Interflora but for print we can send print around the UK with the most carbon reduced delivery system, as the print is produced as near to the point of need as possible. Money can change hands with the files, or invoice your new trusted network of printers, just please keep us out of the loop, as trying to make our bit is not in our remit and would only slow down the transaction. Make sure your free directory listing is kept up to date by requesting your own directory login and password. Leasing is a real issue with our postbag

and phone calls received on the increase on this subject. Tell us about it, supplier’s sales aid and MPR, minimum period rental contracts. CSMA has and will continue to offer arbitration services. When one isolate member is being out numbered or worse we will endeavour to negotiate a way forward and as licensed credit brokers can intervene with questions of title to equipment etc. Most suppliers have now agreed that a less restrictive finance option will allow new suppliers to offer trade in values to reduce the cost of the new contract. Best practice is to be proactive with this and request a comparative independent finance quote to compare with your supplier recommended finance plan. finance@csmaservices.co.uk During the last few months we have met with insurance underwriters to develop an instant print industry insurance scheme. A major company will be partnering our broker to offer bespoke policies with print industry related cover. We don’t want to pay for say shop window glass cover if we do not have business frontage, yet we may need public liability for our staff on other people’s premises. There is not a one size fits all solution which is why we have chosen people that understand print and will offer a measurement of requirements. You may not fall neatly into a shop, office or factory policy so doesn’t pay for cover

you don’t need while being exposed to liabilities not specified. More on this soon insurance@csmaservices.co.uk we are very interested in your input for this service and will report back before making any decisions. We would like to hear of your expiences with business insurance, the good bad and indifferent please, again insurance@csmaservices.co.uk Your help is also requested in some longer termed plans as all the above is either up and running or in the immediate pipe line. We need to pool some expertise and direction in setting some industry print standards. The gap between those that can invest in the latest ISO of BS something is widening with every tender, 2012 opportunity, local gov. or just big corporate quote process. Together we can sign up to a nationally recognised trade body charter. We can share processes in quality management, environmental issues, health and safety, disaster recovery procedures and more, you tell us what you have been asked for that has taken you out the frame? Whether membership should be policed or given away with a logo for your letterhead is down to our own drive for quality. This will only be as good as we all make it so please be involved at this steering committee stage. Opinions and best practice please to printstandards@ csmaservices.co.uk.

DIGITAL IMAGING

Getting the point across One of my great media heroes was the late Alastair Cooke, whose classic radio broadcasts spanned nearly sixty years and almost three thousand episodes. His Letter from America was always interesting listening, whether it was fifteen minutes of commentary on a mighty affair or state, or a description of some small town happening. Martin Christie writes…

C

ooke’s style was engaging in that he always made you feel he was talking just to you, and you had to be part of an intimate relationship with the story teller. The other special quality was in the narrative itself in that, like any great novel, it held you captive until the conclusion. Often he would verbally wander in several directions, leaving you to wonder where he was leading you, only to pull together all the threads to a timely and satisfying conclusion. It’s a style which I have tried, with various degrees of success, to mimic in these columns where the subject allows, aware that the description of a particular printer or other digital device is unlikely to hold the reader’s attention for a full two thousand words, however fascinating the equipment. A few diversions are slipped in along the way to try and help you follow the plot to the end. It’s a style actually quite different — almost exactly opposed- to journalistic training where the imperative was to get as much information passed over as quickly and succinctly as possible. This is not just for speed of passing over news, but for the very practical production need of convenient editing. If you have to go through every sentence to prune essential items it is very time consuming and risks losing vital facts. So much easier if you can simply lop off paragraphs from the bottom of the page and still keep the integrity of the piece. As long as you have an introduction, an explanation and a conclusion, a good opening paragraph or even a comprehensive headline will tell the story. “Nobody reads the second paragraph!” Walter Matthau’s cynical editor tells hack Jack Lemon in the movie The Front Page, as he tries to fit as many sensational

22

adjectives into one line. Either narrative skill would be useful for those who write press releases, particularly those that end up on the Editor’s desk at Copy Shop News, and have to be prepared for print. Often trying to find out what the release is all about is a challenge in itself, hidden in lots of irrelevant superlatives about the company and very little product information. We do try and be as fair and even handed as possible, but sometimes it’s not made easy — and most often by those being paid specifically to provide the service. I can recall an amusing conversation with a press representative of one major manufacturer — it could have been one of several — who had rung me to extol the virtues of the latest product, during which exchange it became obvious he had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. He didn’t know what type of printer it was, how big it was or what it would cost. But he was sure it was very good. The priorities of any trade magazine must lean towards facts, otherwise it will lack any credibility, and there is little point in basing a publication solely on the delivered words of industry spokespeople. They may be delighted to see their exact words in print, but the vast majority of our readers want to know the real deal. That’s why we are always keen to get our hands on products and give them a proper test in a working environment with real people — customers and staff alike. We don’t work in an ideal world and neither does our equipment. Mitsubishi deserve a credit in this context for choosing to do a small product launch, not at a hotel reception, but in a High Street copy store. North London based Colour Division has been in the on-demand print trade since the 1970s, and is now located in a smart, central shop premises across the road from the station at West Hampstead. While primarily a copy shop, founder David Jacobs is a professional photographer in his own right and has a small studio in the basement. But more

than his interest in photography, it’s the availability of suitable products, and the demand for quality specialist printing of digital images that’s encouraged him to expand that side of the counter service. Like most town centre shops, there’s not a lot of room to play with so a large dry mini-lab was not an option. Mitsubishi’s solution is perfect for this situation as they have a flexible modular system which allows different printers to be matched with customer or operator interface options. Mitsubishi’s range of dye-sublimation printers are well proven, in medical, industrial and public use. Unlike toner and ink based printers, the colours are fused into the special paper and additionally laminated to give exactly the appearance and quality of traditional glazed photographs. A roll-fed printer, not much larger than a five ream paper box, prints 4x6inch up to

6x9inch (photography still works in inches but you can do the maths). A separate 8x12 inch sheet feed printer, a little bigger than an A4 desktop, now been joined by a roll-fed model for speed and convenience. All the models print with full bleed, and as well as prints Mitsubishi has products like albums and calendars which are easily assembled and quickly profitable. Colour Division have installed the complete system, with customer touch screens, but as they are adjacent to the shop counter, staff assistance and advice is always on hand. This is essential, I have

Copy Shop News | February 2010

DIGITAL IMAGING always argued, in that an operation that seems simple in a demonstration, can easily become a challenge if you happen to press the wrong button. Try any station automated ticket machine if you don’t believe me. Touch screen self service photo dispensers have been around for a while, with varied success. The beauty of the Mitsubishi option is that it can be adapted to any working environment, large or small. It has been a constant theme in these columns over the years that the divisions between digital and photographic printing have become obsolete, and that the customer now wants the option of either, and the convenience of choice. The copy shop customer doesn’t need to go to a mini lab for a couple of prints, especially as these days very few taken images are worthy of printing. The bonus is that a particularly good image might be worth taking further — to a large format print or a canvas for example. And that’s without even scratching the potential of photo books. For more information on Mitsubishi printers and systems go to www.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/vis The winter cold snap will hopefully be a distant memory by the time you are reading this, but apart from traffic chaos, snowmen and sledging policemen, the one thing the weather certainly brought out was the digital camera. Papers and websites became a virtual blizzard of snow scenes of all sorts, including the unfortunate officer on duty caught using his riot shield for a more leisurely pursuit. If they haven’t been done already, many customer’s pictures will want to be put to print in one form or another, so will be heading to a counter near you. And like most images, it’s your printing and not the quality of the original photography that will be questioned at the shop front. The one thing that is obvious about snow is that it is white, very white. Digital cameras, or rather digital camera processors don’t like white. The little binary brain inside that does all the complicated stuff before producing an image is programmed to see a world that is eighteen per cent grey. It has this perception embedded in its software from traditional photography where a neutral greyscale card was used to measure reflected light upon an exposure meter in order to produce a colour balance.

February 2010 | Copy Shop News

After many thousand years of evolution, our brains instinctively know that the sky is blue and the sea is green, and conventional film was actually brewed to enhance these hues. Our own eyes also adjust to compensate for the brightness or darkness of what we are looking at. Digital film has to be educated, which is why if left on an automatic white balance setting, colours will vary depending on the saturation of light in the exposed picture. It might be a little, it might be a lot and if it is in extreme lighting condition, it is likely to be the latter. Whereas old style film had a lot of latitude in such conditions, digital is very sensitive to what we used to call colour temperature. The beauty of digital is that a lot of colour problems can be sorted in post production and pre print. There is still no substitute for taking a good picture in the first place, but assuming the average amateur has not been able to set a custom white balance or exposure for snow, there are a few tips to correct what is otherwise most likely to be a blue-ish panorama, and either too bright or too dark. Automatic exposure will always struggle to separate a dark subject from a bright background or vice versa. The best way to correct this in Photoshop to produce a more acceptable print is not to use the obvious Brightness/Contrast slider but to balance levels, and possibly use layers with a screen overlay. In either Levels or Curves, you can use the White Point picker to chose a specific point in the snow. Use this sparingly as it can dramatically alter the hue and contrast of the whole scene. Using multiple layers gives most control of the image. Applying either Screen to lighten the image overall, or Multiply to darken, the additional layer or layers can be reduced in opacity for fine control of output. You can alter colour hue in several ways as usual in Photoshop Under Image Adjustment, but again using layers will be the best option as you can quickly switch off an adjusted layer to see if you have been going in the right direction. If you are running Adobe Lightroom or

Apple’s Aperture in the studio then you have a much more accurate programme for the delicate tuning of a digital image, if the picture is worth it in terms of time and expertise. White balance can be corrected easily along with a host of other settings major and minor. If you are used to Photoshop, the controls may seem a little alien at first, but it’s worth persevering. I’m a complete convert to Lightroom now, and current playing with the Beta Version of Lightroom 3 which you can download from the Adobe website to try. Although it lacks many of the design features of Photoshop, and doesn’t support layers, it’s extremely good at photo-editing, especially if a large number of images need to be batch processed. When working on individual images there

is a very handy before and after display which enables you to see exactly where you have come from and where you are going. Something that is easy to lose track of visually when working on one file. The print option in Lightroom is also very useful as it is much easier to create and save templates for different printers, papers sizes and picture package options — something that is quite awkward to do in Photoshop. Almost as if by accident, Adobe have come up with something that really suits a print shop environment where you may have to talk to many different printers in quick succession. Having to start a print dialogue box all over again is very tedious and easily leads to mistakes. With Lightroom you can be sure your white snow scene will print white!

GREEN ISSUES

ArjoWiggins extends recycled papers Arjowiggins Graphic announces the launch of a new Satimat Green 75% recycled paper. The coated stock is manufactured from 75% post consumer FSC certified recycled fibre and 25% FSC certified virgin fibre and has been specially developed to respond to demand for papers with cutting-edge sustainability credentials. Satimat Green is produced using recycled fibres from Arjowiggins’ Greenfield S.A.S.

mill. The recycled de-inked pulp offers bright levels of whiteness comparable to papers produced from virgin fibres. The silk coated range combines the latest environmental credentials with a soft, velvety touch. The new paper is available in a range of weights from 100 – 400 gsm and is suitable for applications including report and accounts, corporate social responsibility reports, luxury magazines, brochures and

direct mailers. Sam Neal, MD of Geoff Neal Litho, comments: “Our customers now expect high environmental credentials as standard but are not willing to compromise on quality or price. The new 75% recycled option from Satimat Green meets these demands and offers great tactile qualities that we normally only see on papers produced with virgin fibres, making it ideal for a range of applications.” Chris Sandwell, Sales Director at Elliott Baxter – merchant for Satimat Green – comments: “Papers with strong environmental credentials continue to be in high demand. Arjowiggins Graphic has always been at the forefront of recycled paper development and this latest launch further strengthens its range. It also meets the latest Government guidelines for recycled content, assisting printers and designers in meeting sustainability targets.” The launch is being supported by a brochure providing details of the range’s specifications and samples showcasing its exceptional print quality. This month, 7000 brochures will be distributed by Elliott Baxter to printers and designers across the UK. Printers and designers interested in understanding the reduced environmental impact of using recycled papers such as Satimat Green can request an environmental benefit statement from the new Arjowiggins Graphic website – www.recycledpapers.co.uk. The statement shows the equivalent reduction in energy consumption and landfill compared to using a paper stock manufactured from virgin fibres.

FSC UK Chooses Evolution for Annual Report

The Forest Stewardship Council in the United Kingdom has selected Evolution 100 Premium Silk, available exclusively from the Premier Paper Group, on which to print its latest Annual Report. Evolution 100 Premium Silk is a high quality silk coated paper and board range that is FSC certified 100% recycled. The sheet is produced from 100% de-inked post consumer waste without the need for chemical bleaching. 9lives Offset secures Macmillan an award

Macmillan Cancer Support has secured a top marketing prize for The Little Green Book of Fundraising Ideas, which was produced on PaperCo 9lives Offset recycled stock. It was the winner of the Third Sector category of the Marketing Design Awards. Macmillan uses 9Lives Offset as its house stock for fundraising materials. Anthony Rathbone, production and logistics manager for Macmillan, says: “9lives bulk allows us to produce items with a substantial feel, without having to increase our grammage, keeping our costs down. It’s 100% recycled and FSC accredited and it complements Macmillan’s visual identify brilliantly. Its whiteness shows off our bold green silhouettes and unique typeface and adds to how instantly recognisable our publications have become.” The charity switched to using recycled stock, working closely with WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme. It did so without compromising its need to spend ethically and financially soundly.

The Little Book of Fundraising Ideas used 140, 170 and 250gsm papers for its 94pp 120 x 168mm book which was designed in house with print organised through GI Solutions, Leicester. The print run was 15,000. Macmillan’s senior designer Corin Martin says: “We wanted to create a product that would inspire current and new supporters to fundraise for us. The concept of 101 different fundraising ideas gave us the scope to use different creative approaches throughout the booklet – really making the most of our Macmillan headline font, silhouettes and photography.” The book includes raffle tickets, Christmas cracker jokes, sticker sheets and even a punch-out masquerade mask. Macmillan is PaperCo’s preferred charity and the paper merchant is working hard to raise enough money to fund a Macmillan nurse for 100 days. To get copies of the Little Green Book of Fundraising Ideas, register at be.macmillan.org.uk or check out www.macmillan. org.uk/fundraising/FundraisingIdeas/FundraisingIdeas.aspx

Recycling competition winners receive iPods Andrew Wilson, managing director of Unity Print and Publishing was the winner of the PaperCo Media Pro 09 competition to guess the weight of a pallet of waste paper. His guess was 182kg, just three kilos short of the actual figure. He wins an iPod Nano with a second prize iPod Shuffle going to Joanna Haslam of Loop. Veronica Heaven, corporate responsibility director of PaperCo, says: “The pallet of recycled paper was to draw attention to our Born Again closed loop recycling service. This is a complete product in waste out service that starts with the meticulous sourcing of environmentally sound papers from carefully selected mills in Europe. The customer’s waste is then subsequently collected and the recovered material returned to the paper mill to be reprocessed as new product. Media Pro was a great show with plenty of on stand interest and an enjoyable champagne reception co-hosted by PEFC, the forest certification scheme.” Andrew Wilson says: “I thought Media Pro was an excellent event and I very much applaud PaperCo’s decision to support it when it could have been all too easy in these times to have passed it by. I have been aware of PaperCo’s environmental credentials for some time now, so it was good to see them highlighting this to a wider media related audience. I particularly liked the way that they did it; we tend to associate pallets with a finished job not a pile of waste paper. I was also present at PaperCo’s press event at the show, where they unveiled the winners of a student design competition (Brief Encounters) they had been running. So well done to PaperCo for two great initiatives for our industry sustainability and education.”

Mondi launches Green Range campaign

Mondi, a manufacturer of paper and packaging products, is launching a new campaign focused on its Green Range product family. The Green Range was introduced in 2006 and consists entirely of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified office and printing paper from responsibly managed forests, TCF (totally chlorine free) paper or 100% recycled paper. The Green Range product family has grown continuously – most recently with the FSC certification of the entire „Color Copy portfolio of products as well as Snegurochka, the first FSC certified paper in Russia and the leading brand in the region. Since 2008 Mondi also offers PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) certified products. Green Range products are exclusively produced according to the highest environmental and social practices. The campaign is based on real facts. Every industrial process has different impacts on the environment. The question is how much does each company contribute to minimise its environmental footprint? In terms of the paper industry, the relevant topics are responsible management of forest, water and air resources. These elements therefore form the basis for the Green Range campaign and are summarised in the following formula: forest + water + air = Green Range. Consequently the Green Range logo should be recognised as a symbol of high environmental performance combined with superior product quality. www.mondigroup.com/greenrange www.mondigroup.com/sustainability 25

NEW PROFIT CENTRE

Introducing Josh Ellsworth and his 2010 predicitions Many of you will be familiar with the name “Josh Ellsworth”, since he is a well known figure in the apparel decoration world. Josh is known throughout the industry as a Cad-Cut® materials specialist, with over 1000 forum postings on T-Shirt Forums. Josh is the author of the “Heat Press Yourself” blog, and the “star” and producer of many heat printing related YouTube videos. Josh is now the General Manager of Stahls’ Cad-Cut® Direct, a member of the GroupeSTAHL association. He will be continuing to develop “How to” videos, writing articles for industry trade publications and much more. GroupeSTAHL asked Josh for some of his predictions for 2010 and he responded with the following points. Relating to Sales & Marketing Josh predicted: • Decorated Apparel Businesses with websites will have to render a preview of decorating options to get more orders. Larger decorators will continue to leverage t-shirt generators, while mid to small size decorators can compete by utilising videos on product pages. • Savvy business owners will start a Facebook page and use tools such as photos, slideshows and video to mass merchandise to customers. • Some decorators will jump into social media marketing and become so engulfed to the point where it is negatively impacting their productivity. Smart decorators will select one or two outlets and maximise them. Turning to Trends, Josh made the following predictions: • Some of the unemployed workforce in the UK, Europe and the US market, will start their own business and need to order decorated apparel. Given that not many small companies start with over 40 employees – screen printing will start to become

passé for decorating corporate apparel. Embroidery continues to thrive with heat transfer technologies growing much stronger. • Performance apparel continues to grow and pose new challenges. More manufacturers will source or make lots of fabrics abroad making dye migration challenges the norm. Decorators who can combat these issues will be in demand. • With the emergence of full colour options across all imaging platforms, some schools will begin to understand that they do not have to be limited to 1-3 colour logo/mascots. Logo redesigns will begin to take place across the country and the power of digital printing will be harnessed for imaging on signage, apparel, books and promotional products. • Decoration of footwear, braces, gloves and protective equipment will catch on. Decorators who can accommodate these items will make great profit margins and differentiate from competitors, opening doors to new opportunities. • Screen Printers will reinvent themselves to be very inclusive of customisation technologies. This trend has started to happen with the buzz of DTG, however, wise printers will realise that there are other customisation technologies such as CadCut® and Print & Cut that are better suited for certain jobs. • The availability of vinyl cutters and start up heat transfer businesses in the under 1000 price point will create a BOOM in the availability of customisation technologies. Now when a team, business or individual needs decoration, they find customisation to be available locally and to be faster than screen printing. Ensure that you keep up to date with Josh and see what is happening in the exciting, real world of garment decoration! Bristol-based printer Spilt Ink Studio has revitalised its online personalised greeting cards offering with the launch of a fresh new web2print brand and investment in new coating technology from Duplo. www.funkypigeon.com was launched late last year and is a completely new consumer website offering a range of personalised gifts branded with some very high profile licenses including “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here”. The launch of the new website replaces their previous site www.remind4u.com. Explains Richard Pepper, Managing Director, Spilt Ink Studio. “We felt we needed to move forward from a traditional site which hadn’t changed much since its conception in 2002; then Funky Pigeon evolved a into new brand and defined new emotion to build upon. Coupled with the improvements at the front end we wanted to enhance our already well established reputation for high quality finished products, by investing more in our finishing line. We purchased the UV coater machine from Duplo as it complemented our two HP Indigo 5000 series machine, and produced a truly excellent finish on higher quality card.” Spilt Ink Studio purchased the first UK-based Duplo Ultra 205A UV Coater in September 2009, after the product was launched to the market in the summer of that year. The greeting cards are printed on the HP Indigo 5000’s, coated using the new Ultra 205A, then finished using their existing line of two DC-645 Multi Finishers for slitting, cutting and creasing followed by folding using the Duplo’s MKF-35 Knife Folder. The Ultra 205A also has to cater for up to four users as well as keep up with the two HP machines. With thousands of items printed every month, it was a major requirement that the new coater did not jeopardise production speeds and cause bottle-necking. Richard continues “We have managed to change our business in a very short time. Whilst our litho business and trade business grows, we have now successfully entered into the consumer market-place with a range of interesting and relevant brands. Our ethos remains quality with speed, and our new investment of the Ultra 205A certainly ticks all boxes. Our whole finishing line is imperative to our business. If any part of the finishing line goes down, our operation would come to a stand still and when you are working in the B2C market, the consequences could be critical. We have every faith in our DC-645 MultiFinishers and this has been complemented by the new Ultra 205A UV Coater which keeps the impressive reliability and usability that the other Duplo machines have, whilst adding something different to our business.” The company saw an increase in demand with the launch of www. funkypigeon.com in time for the Christmas rush, and the Ultra is more than keeping up with the two HP Indigos. This has allowed the machine to also be used in conjunction with other presses to coat other applications such as calendars and business cards. “There is no doubt the Ultra has greatly improved our product offering. We have gloss on the outside to really bring the cards to life and matte on the inside to protect the cards whilst still allowing them to be written on. We insist on the highest quality of card and print process, as greeting cards are a memorable keepsake. When a card is personalised with a name and special message, the recipient will always remember the day they received it.” Comments Richard. With the improvements to product quality, coupled with the new website which is now planned for a significant marketing drive, the future looks rosy for Spilt Ink Studio. Visit www.funkypigeon.com to find out more and visit www. duplouk.com/uv for more information regarding the Duplo Ultra 205A UV Coater.

Work placement sites required. Can you help? CSN is pleased to introduce FJF project with HTCIC that is funded by DWP (Department of Work and Pensions.) The process is surprisingly simple for those in the right areas and with skills to pass on. Participating print shops will benefit by placing candidates on work experience for 26 weeks at no cost to the ‘employer’. HTIC presently have contracts in Yorkshire & Humber, North East of England, Essex and West London. The East of England also has allocated funding, particularly Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex. Dear CSN readers,

If you could offer work‐experience opportunities to young people at NO COST to yo u and with NO OBLIGATION to keep them on after, how many would you take?

We have been contracted under the DWP Future Jobs Fund (FJF) to match new work‐experience opportunities with eligible young (18‐24) candidates, and to pay all salary and NIC costs for 26 week s. Our particular FJF offer includes FREE pre‐screening, in‐work mentoring and online training for candidates, as well as comprehensive support for all participating employers. Judging by our FJF results, and the glowing testimonial s received from many candidates and employers to date, this has proven to be a very successful combination. For employers wishing to expand but reluctant to invest in salary and training cos ts without first proving the worth of the candidates, or where new opportunities exist that would not otherwise be cost‐effective to entertain, this is an ideal solution. You start the process by identifying the jobs, we’ll do the rest. Our FJF commitment to you includes: ; Understanding your job opportunities and matching to appropriate candida

tes

; Creating bespoke online training programmes to suit their work‐rela ted train

ing needs

; Assisting you through pre‐interview screening and with on‐going support

after recruitment.

; Providing all necessary documentation to make the whole process as easy

as possible for you

; Providing ‘in‐work’ mentors for candidates to make sure they stay on‐trac

In addition, we will be: ; Paying candidate wages at National Minimum Wage for 25hrs per week fo

r 26 weeks, and

; Paying your employer’s National Insurance contributions for the can didate(s

All we ask now is that you complete the simple no‐obligation form below and fax it back to us on 0844‐888‐7630 (or you could email the information directly to b.burden@htcic.org). This is just to indi cate what your requirements may be. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to he aring from you soon. READERS’ SCRIBES

Muuum? Son asked his mother the following question: ‘Mum, why are wedding dresses white?’ The mother looks at her son and replies: ‘Son, this shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure.’ The son thanks his Mum and goes off to double-check this with his father. ‘Dad why are wedding dresses white?’ The father looks at his son in surprise and says: ‘Son, all household appliances come in white.’

Why I fired my Secretary Last week was my birthday and I didn’t feel very well waking up on that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping my wife would be pleasant and say, ‘Happy Birthday!’, and possibly have a small present for me. As it turned out, she barely said good morning, let alone’ Happy Birthday.’ I thought....well, that’s marriage for you, but the kids...they will remember. My kids came bounding down stairs to breakfast and didn’t say a word. So when I left for the office, I felt pretty low and somewhat despondent. As I walked into my office, my secretary Jane said, ‘Good Morning Boss, and by the way Happy Birthday! It felt a little better that at least

someone had remembered. I worked until one o’clock, when Jane knocked on my door and said, ‘You know, it’s such a beautiful day outside, and it is your Birthday, what do you say we go out to lunch, just you and me? I said, ‘Thanks, Jane, that’s the greatest thing I’ve heard all day. Let’s go!’ We went to lunch. But we didn’t go where we normally would go. She chose instead a quiet bistro with a private table. We had two martinis each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously. On the way back to the office, Jane said, ‘You know, it’s such a beautiful day... We don’t need to go straight back to the office, do we?’ I responded, ‘I guess not’. What do you have in mind?’ She said, ‘Let’s drop by my apartment; it’s just around the corner.’ After arriving at her apartment, Jane turned to me and said, ‘ Boss, if you don’t mind, I’m going to step into the bedroom for just a moment. I’ll be right back.’ ‘Ok.’ I nervously replied. She went into the bedroom and, after a couple of minutes, she came out carrying a huge birthday cake ...followed by my wife, my kids, and dozens of my friends and co-workers, all singing ‘Happy Birthday’. And I just sat there...on the couch... completely naked!

New Improved Apple Apple announced today that it has developed a breast implant that can store and play music. The iTit will cost from £499 to £699, depending on cup and speaker size. This is considered a major social breakthrough, because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them.

Dunkin ‘Viagra’ is now available in powder form for your tea. It doesn’t enhance your sexual performance but it does stop your biscuit going soft.

Sorry more Salesman Jokes… Sent in by Salesmen! Two Copier Salesmen were curry addicts and injected themselves with curry powder between blow outs - both are in intensive care. One has a dodgy tikka and the other one is in a korma. Salesmen in the UK have complained that there are not enough television shows with minorities in mind, so Rogue Traders is now going to be shown twice a week. A saleswoman brings eight-year-old Johnny home and tells his mother that

he was caught playing doctors and nurses with Mary, her eight-year old daughter. Johnny’s mother says, “Let’s not be too harsh on them.... they are bound to be curious about Sex at that age.” “Curious about Sex?” replies Mary’s mother. “He’s taken her appendix out!”

Just one more thing Sitting in a pub, a man turns to a fellow drinker and says: “Just tell me one thing: why is there only one Monopolies Commission?”

George and the dragon Late one evening, after closing time, an exhausted tourist knocks on the door of an isolated, countryside pub, the George and Dragon. The landlady sticks her head out of the window. “Excuse me, I’m lost and hungry, could you spare me a little food?” the tourist asks. The woman glances at his dirty clothes and shouts back, “No!” “Could I at least use your loo?” the tourist pleads. “No!” the landlady shouts again. “Then,” the tourist says, “might I please...” “What now?” barks the woman. “Do you suppose,” he asks, “I might have a word with George?”

First and last orders A man walks into a bar with a roll of Tarmac under his arm and says: “Pint, please, and one for the road...”

READERS’ SCRIBES

Cable fable A jumper cable walks into a bar. The barman says: “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.”

Bard of the bar Shakespeare walks into a tavern. “Oi, Shakespeare” shouts the barman, “You’re bard!”

Booze and cruise A guy goes into a bar, orders 12 shots and starts drinking them as fast as he can. The barman says: “Sir, why are you drinking so fast?” The guy says: “You would be drinking fast if you had what I had.” The barman says “What do you have?” The guy says “50p”

Yee-haw An old cowboy goes to a bar and orders a drink. As he sits sipping his whiskey, a young lady sits down next to him. She turns to the cowboy and asks: “Are you a real cowboy?” He replies: “Well, I’ve spent my whole life on the ranch, herding horses, mending fences and branding cattle, so I guess I am.” She replies: “I’m a lesbian, I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. As I watch TV, or eat, I think about women. Everything seems to make me think about women.” The two sit sipping in silence. A short time later, a man sits down the other side of the old cowboy and asks: “Are you a real cowboy?” He replies: “I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian.”

Wrong type Four fonts – Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma and Times New Roman – walk into a bar. The barman says: “Get out – we don’t want your type in here.”

Clowning around Q: How do you kill off a circus in one go? A: Go for the juggler

I was passing a shop ‘Hairdressing for Men’

The robot A popular bar has a new robotic barman installed. A guy comes in for a drink and the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man replies: “130.” So the robot goes on to make conversation about physics, astronomy and so on. The man listens intently and thinks: “This is really cool.” Another guy comes in for a drink and the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man response: “100.” So the robot starts talking about TV, the weather and so on. The man thinks to himself: “Wow, this is really cool.” A third guy comes into the bar. As with the others the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man replies: “80.” The robot says: “So, how many copiers have you sold this month?”

Van Man A man walks into a bar and sees troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh nursing a pint. “Hi Vince,” says the man. “Can I get you a drink?” “No thanks,” replies Van Gogh. “I’ve got one ear.”

Southern psychology At one American university, students in the psychology program were attending their first class on emotional extremes. “Just to establish some parameters,” said the professor to the student from Arkansas, “what is the opposite of joy?” “Sadness,” replied the diligent student. “And the opposite of depression?” he asked of the young lady from Oklahoma. “Elation,” she said. “And you, sir,” he said to the young man from Texas, “what about the opposite of woe?” The Texan replied, “Sir, I believe that would be ‘giddy up.’”

Super-cruel

The dark split Q: How many divorced men does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Who cares? They never get the house anyway.

Confusion A dyslexic man walks into a bra...

Pig-ipede Q: What do you get when you cross a pig and a centipede? A: Bacon and legs!

Trampy A tramp walks into a bar and demands a drink. He is refused because he clearly can’t pay. The tramp then pulls a hamster from his pocket and says, “In return for the drink, I’ll show you something you’ve never seen before.” He takes the hamster over to the old piano in the corner where it proceeds to play Gershwin tunes beautifully. The barman is impressed and pours out a scotch for the same tramp, who knocks it back and demands another. “No way,” says the barman. “Show me another miracle and you can have another. Otherwise get out.” From another pocket the tramp produces a frog which starts to sing beautifully. Another customer is so impressed that he immediately offers the tramp £500 for the frog, which he accepts gratefully. The barman is amazed, “You’re mad,” he tells the tramp, “That frog must have been worth millions.” The tramp smiles and orders another scotch. “Not a bit of it,” he says, “The hamster is also a ventriloquist.”

Ignorance is bliss

Two men are sitting in a bar. One says to the other, “That window is magic. To prove it, I’ll jump out.” He jumps, much to the other man’s horror, and plummets 20 floors only to stop and float gently back up. “Amazing, huh? Why don’t you try?” The other man is dubious, but eventually decides to jump. He plummets 30 floors and smacks into the pavement. The first man is in hysterics. “You know,” says the bartender, “you’re a real pain when you’re drunk, Superman.”

After marrying a sweet young woman, a 90-year-old gent tells his doctor that they are expecting a baby. “Let me tell you a story,” says the doctor. “An absent-minded fellow went hunting, but instead of a gun, he picked up an umbrella. Suddenly a bear charged him. Pointing his umbrella at the bear, he shot and killed it on the spot.” “But that’s impossible!” the old man exclaims. “Somebody else must have shot that bear.” “Exactly,” replied the doctor.

So I went in

There was a rabbit trying on clothes

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR BOSS When you take a long time, you’re slow. When your boss takes a long time, he’s thorough. When you don’t do it, you’re lazy. When your boss doesn’t do it, he’s too busy. When you make a mistake, you’re an idiot. When your boss makes a mistake, he’s only human. When doing something without being told, you’re overstepping your authority. When your boss does the same thing, that’s initiative. When you take a stand, you’re being pig-headed. When your boss does it, he’s being firm. When you overlooked a rule of ettiquette, you’re being rude. When your boss skips a few rules, he’s being original. When you please your boss, you’re arse-creeping. When your boss pleases his boss, he’s being co-operative. When you’re out of the office, you’re wandering around. When your boss is out of the office, he’s on business. When you’re on a day off sick, you’re always sick. When your boss has a day off sick, he must be very ill. When you apply for leave, you must be going for an interview. When your boss applies for leave, it’s because he’s overworked.

RUDE THINGS TO SAY I don’t know what makes you so stupid, but it really works! I don’t think you are a fool. But then what’s MY opinion against thousands of others? I hear the only place you’re ever invited is outside. I hear you were born on a farm. Any more in the litter? I heard you got a brain transplant and the brain rejected you! I heard you went to have your head examined but the doctors found nothing there. I know you are nobody’s fool but maybe someone will adopt you. I thought of you all day today. I was at the zoo. I would ask you how old you are but I know you can’t count that high. I’d like to help you out. Which way did you come in?

All these blokes were saying ‘That’s great, you look really good’
