Don’t you just love February? Romance blossoming in the finishing room, or at least lots of Valentine cards to get creased up over. This is the month we historically start to get on with the rest of the year. January over and the endless wishing all and sundry, all the best for the new year, humbug. Time to get on with it. There are more new businesses starting requiring print. Can you see the new shoots of recovery? If not sure, say yes anyway, you know a lot of the businesses we touch daily expect us to have our finger on the economic pulse, and a positive vibe will give encouragement for everyone to start promoting themselves with more print. Yes your PMA, positive mental attitude, is really contagious. This month, from our 6,600 frontline print shops we can kick start our normal spring into summer marketing campaigns a few weeks early. Remember, PMA for printers stands for Pre March Action. Love to you and yours from me and mine. Peter, SWALK, Foulkes

National Portrait Gallery revamps shop The National Portrait Gallery in London revealed its new dedicated print on demand kiosk in the Gallery shop with its Epson Stylus Pro 4880 taking centre stage. This large format printer is used to produce high quality prints on satin paper and canvas with a choice of A4, A3 and A2 sizes for the customer to take away. With 70,000 images available, a visitor uses the touch screen to browse by artist, sitter or collection. Once they have chosen their image, they are asked to make a size selection, which also displays the price, and after confirming the choice, pays at the till. Once payment is taken the staff member changes the paper tray accordingly and releases the relevant print queue to output the print. The process from payment to production takes only a few minutes, and even if the customer has ordered multiple copies at different sizes, the maximum wait time is 30 minutes. The Gallery has another printer in its basement warehouse, which usually fulfils website orders, but can be called upon to assist should the demand become excessive. Retail Operations Manager Rebecca Hossain says: “There is a huge surge in demand each summer when we have the BP Portrait Award exhibition. All the entries are available as prints and they are very popular. One of the reasons we chose the Epson printer is its reliability. Even though we produce well over 8,000 prints over the 363 days we are open each year, we never have a problem with it. It is extraordinary that it just keeps on going.” The machine is well looked after, however, with staff checking it and the stock of ink and media each morning. Some of the portraits on display are extremely well known and the quality of the prints is of paramount importance. “The Stylus Pro range has the best reputation for quality, which was confirmed by our independent research and the fact that we have used Epson printers very happily for five years. And we also have the evidence right here,” explains Rebecca. “A lot of pictures here are family portraits and some of those who visit know the paintings very well. If the colour is wrong, they will know. Our visitors literally have great expectations of what they expect from the print service.” The Stylus Pro 4880 uses Epson’s UltraChrome K3 Vivid Magenta 8/9-colour ink set, which gives an exceptionally wide colour gamut and therefore the quality required by the National Portrait Gallery. The touch screen in the kiosk is driven by Picture Cabinet, image management software that is supplied by Cabinet UK. When the image is chosen it is sent to a web application at the till for payment and then sent to the print queue using Java. This adds white space around the image, the National Portrait Gallery’s copyright information and the name of the artist and the title of the painting. The printer is driven by a Fuji RIP and the print, if not canvas, is produced on Epson’s satin paper.

“People can come from far and wide to see the portraits. They have an attachment to their visit and enjoy taking a memento, a part of the Gallery, home with them,” says Rebecca “It is very much a growth area which is why the special print on demand kiosks were installed. The fast service, the quality and turnaround is key.” www.epson.co.uk

Adobe and OCR enhance IT qualification

UK awarding body, OCR, has announced that the existing certification for skills in Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop and Premiere(ACA), will now contribute to the achievement of OCR’s ITQ qualification. This Adobe/OCR partnership means that students’ skills in Adobe software can now help them to succeed in a second nationally recognised IT qualification from OCR. OCR’s portfolio of Adobe linked qualifications is growing fast with success in Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop also helpingstudents to achieve OCR’s Creative iMedia qualification. For Adobe, this initiative represents the company’s commitment to ensuring that students have industry standard skills when they enter the workplace. Liz Wilkins, Senior Marketing Manager for Adobe Systems UK, said: “At Adobe, we have worked

closely with educational institutions for many years, championing the use of digital media tools and integrating them into a range of subject areas in order to better prepare students for the future demands of the workplace. It’s even more important in the current climate that other initiatives are put in place to create a link between students and creative professionals. We feel that ACA aligned with the OCRnationally recognised qualifications will help to bridge that gap.” John Deacon, OCR Business Manager, said, “This is an excellent development which enhances our vocational IT qualification range and our ITQ qualification in particular. We are delighted to be working with Adobe. For several years, Adobe has greatly influenced the international media market through its industry recognised media software. OCR customers asked if there was some way we could recognise the Adobe Certified Associate

as a qualification, so we know that there is real demand out there.” OCR’s ITQ in IT User Skills, which incorporates CLAiT, is a flexible credit based qualification with a choice of 90 units to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA) is a leading UK awarding body, providing a wide range of qualifications to meet the needs of learners of all ages and abilities. OCR leads the market in vocational IT qualifications, enabling many thousands of learners to achieve real competency in this vital area every year. Each year more than three million students gain OCR qualifications, which are offered by 13,000 centres including schools, sixth form colleges, FE colleges, training providers, voluntary organisations, local authorities, and businesses. www.adobe.co.uk www.ocr.org.uk

DIGITALLY PRINTED WALLPAPER STARRED ON TV

When Landor Phototex, the digitally printable self adhesive fabric starred on The Gadget Show towards the end of last year in a DIY shootout comparing traditional wallpaper with digitally printed wallpaper, Derric Landor was blown away by the response: “Since the show was aired we’ve had hundreds of people asking for home murals.” Tommy Walsh, the DIY celebrity, faced the challenge with conventional wallpaper and paste against the show’s presenter Suzi Perry putting up a Landor Phototex mural printed easily and quickly on an Epson 11880 inkjet printer. The Gadget Show was looking for a new, innovative DIY product that would compete against traditional wallpaper methods. Landor Phototex is not only an easy to apply self

adhesive, product but also allows consumers to choose their own photos, images or designs for the home. It is also ideal for a variety of industrial applications, posters, stickers, advertising, fine art, cut outs, interior décor, office and retail interiors. It can be printed by all known inkjet technologies, and is already being widely used on water based, solvent, latex, ecosolvent and UV inkjet as well as laser, offset litho, and digital presses in all small and wide formats, sheets and rolls. Added to this its soft furnishing stable fabric opens up the doors of creativity and opportunity for printers, retailers, home users and the corporate sector to improve the quality of advertising as well as the comfort of visual and art imaging in the home. Phototex can also easily be used for cutting out decals, personalising photos and signs quickly and simply” Landor is the international distributor for most markets outside the USA including the UK, Ireland, Europe, and South Africa and the middle East. Pantone reveals Colour of the Year for 2011 pAnTOne has announced that the 2011 colour of the year will be PANTONE 182120 Honeysuckle. While the 2010 colour of the year, PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise, served as an escape for many, Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigour. A dynamic reddish pink, Honeysuckle is encouraging and uplifting. It elevates our psyche beyond escape, instilling the confidence, courage and spirit to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of everyday life. “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating colour that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute “Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother colour red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.” Eiseman continues, “The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this colour, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for

which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer.” Honeysuckle is guaranteed to produce a healthy glow when worn by both men and women. It’s a striking, eye-catching hue that works well for day and night in women’s apparel, accessories and cosmetics, and in men’s ties, shirts and sportswear. Lord Digby Jones calls for the Print Industry to engage with Schools A

s Proskills, the Sector Skills Council for process and manufacturing, launches four new Schools Into Industry Programmes (SIIP’s), Lord Digby Jones, former CBI head, challenges print manufacturers to play their part in strengthening the future of manufacturing by engaging with local schools. Lord Digby Jones, British manufacturing, and with it the economy, has suffered hugely in the past few years, and positive action is needed to rebuild the status of British manufacturing as a global leader. The message for this is simple: the UK not only needs to invest in manufacturing’s current workforce but in its future workforce as well. In order to achieve this, Lord Digby Jones has stressed the importance of attracting younger students into the world of manufacturing: “The UK will only get itself out of this economic mess if it trades its way out and sells its goods around the world. That means manufacturing! It is essential we have an education system which delivers young people who want to build careers in manufacturing and who have the skills and mind set to do so. “That means encouraging businesses around the country to liaise with their local schools and introduce teenagers to the fascinating and worthwhile career opportunities in the vibrant and successful manufacturing sector. There has never been a better time to change this country’s attitude and it is up to businesses to accept the challenge.“ Lord Digby Jones lends his support to Proskills as they look to engage with schools and employers to take part in the successful, curriculum mapped SIIP, PrintIT! which aims to educate and excite students towards a career within the print industry. PrintIT! works by ‘twinning’ schools with local furniture manufacturing employers so they can gain a full understanding of not only the work involved with the programmes they are taking part in, but the wider world of work and future careers within manufacturing. PrintIT! is not just an education programme, it is a national competition where students can enter their work and compete against other students from across the country to win fantastic prizes for both themselves and their schools.

Terry Watts, CEO of Proskills, explains how the SIIP can have a positive impact on the British economy: “The future of Britain’s economy lies within manufacturing, and the future of manufacturing lies in bringing through the next generation of skilled employees to push our sector forward. It is absolutely crucial that we convey the right message and show the fantastic opportunities that are available within a career in manufacturing. We need to show students that they can embark on a career that could really change Britain for the better.” Wayne Barlow, Director of Professional Print at Canon & Chairman of PrintIT!, Proskills flagship SIIP, said, “If manufacturing in the UK is to survive and maintain its competitive edge in the future, we need to look to this exciting talent pool and encourage these youngsters to channel their abilities into a career in print, be it in technical, creative or even sales and commercial related areas. We only have to look back at some of the greatest inventions of the 21st century, namely the internet, email and social media, to see the impact that such creative young talent can have on business.” Terry Watts continues, “Attracting the next generation into manufacturing is a goal that we all must work towards achieving, and it is by launching our Schools Into Industry Programmes that we hope to unite industry leaders with their local schools, giving the students a real insight into what manufacturing is all about, and show them that manufacturing is a sector filled with opportunity. “If the future of UK manufacturing matters to you, we urge you to contact your local school and help them open up the world of opportunity it represents to young people. Find out how to get involved with Proskills Schools Into Industry Programmes by logging on to www.theits.org.uk.”

The Programmes PrintIT! is for students of GCSE Graphic Products or GCSE Product Design and the Diplomas in Creative & Media and Manufacturing & Product Design.

About Twinning Participating schools will have access to a twinning scheme that aims to link schools with local employers. Twinning aims to link schools with local employers to offer their support for the project through mentoring and advice, and helps to bring learning to life through site visits.

With April fast approaching, the Royal Mail has announced its annual price increase for postal rates: • From 4th April, the prices of 1st and 2nd class stamps are set to rise to 46p and 36p respectively. That’s an increase of 5p on 1st class and 4p on 2nd class! • For franking machine users, prices have increased by 3p to 39p and by 3p to 28p respectively. This is the first increase for two years on franked mail following a price freeze last year. • This now means that it costs nearly 30% more to stamp than to frank! If your business is still using stamps to send items of mail, you may want to consider a more convenient and efficient alternative – franked mail. A franking machine can pay for itself, even when sending as little as 15 items per day. If you’re still unsure whether a franking machine will benefit your business, why not try a Neopost franking machine for FREE? Below are some benefits of using a Neopost Franking Machine. • Genuinely convenient: No more queuing! With a Neopost franking machine you’ll never run out of postage. That’s because it can be re-credited on-line with postage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. • Right first time every time: Calculating the correct postage is easy with the on-screen rate wizard, so there’s no risk of understamping and passing surcharges onto customers, or over stamping and incurring unnecessary costs. • Manage your postage on-line: An on-line account allows you to analyse spend by department or type of mail. You can also order consumables or request service support. www.neopost.co.uk/ franking-machine/free-trial

for sign-makers and display producers wanting to produce soft signs, flags, décor and home furnishings using this technology,” concludes Wyles. “The benefit of high quality, colour accurate production can now be applied to a whole range of indoor and outdoor applications which can be produced onto polyester based fabrics for lightweight, durable and eco-friendly results.” For more information visit www. rolanddg.co.uk or contact Roland on 0845 230 90 60 or sales@ rolanddg.co.uk

Work such as collating, bookletmaking and overprinting is made so much easier by reducing paper feeding errors such as double sheeting.

Speedier Ink Drying Wet ink dries quicker using the air blower system and this can be even more effective on double sided work.

Various Job Modes – at the touch of a button. Jogging strength and air volume are adjustable according to the quality and quantity of paper. The Printing Charity benefits from calendar fund-raiser

A number of sponsoring companies from the print industry have joined forces to produce a 2011 calendar to raise money for The Printing Charity. The calendar received its official launch at the Konica Minolta ihub in London to a gathering of guests from industry bodies including the British Printing Industries Federation, the British Association for Print and Communications and the Independent Print Industries Association. The calendar is a collaborative effort from a number of individuals and companies. Photography was provided by Picfree, the stock image library and Katherine Anne White, with design by Surrect Media UK. Printing was by Konica Minolta using a bizhub PRO C65hc high-chroma digital press. 1,500 copies of the calendar were produced on Xerox supplied Colotech silk coated 170gsm A3 stock, with wirebind finishing by Renz. Polestar provided post and packing. The calendar shows images themed to the relevant month with an emphasis on vibrant colours to take full advantage of the wide colour gamut provided by the high-chroma digital technology of the bizhub C65hc. Donations of £5 for copies of the calendar are recommended with a target of £7,500 in total fund raising. The Printing Charity exists for those who work or have worked in printing, publishing, graphic arts and the allied trades. The charity targets it resources at people who are on low incomes, including dependents of people with five years’ continuous employment in the industry sectors the charity represents. For The Printing Charity Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive, commented: “We’re delighted that so many of our friends in the print industry have worked together on this important fund raising calendar. £7,500 would add another 15 or more people to those we already help. Grants go out to somewhere around 400 people a year and we are keen to expand this help, particularly given the current economic situation.” Those wishing to receive a copy of the 2011 calendar should call 01293 649 366 or email alison@theprintingcharity.org.uk

WHY NOT…link up with your local galleries? Says Martin Johns, Epson

gAlleRIes around the world are adding printers to their shops so that visitors can choose their favorite image and have it printed on the spot – it’s a good profit earner and it’s very popular. But it’s not just the big galleries and museums that can provide this service: any gallery in any town could set up such a service and who better to help them than their local Copy Shop? You could choose to install an on-site system and look after it for them or you could provide the print/fulfillment aspect of the service from your own shop. It’s worth seeing how the National Portrait Gallery has set up their service. They revealed their new dedicated print on demand kiosk in their shop with an Epson Stylus Pro 4880 taking centre stage. This wide format printer is used to produce high quality prints on satin paper and canvas with a choice of A4, A3 and A2 sizes for the customer to take away. The visitor uses the touch screen to browse by artist, sitter or collection. Once they have chosen their image, they are asked to make a size selection, which also displays the price, and after confirming the choice, pay at the till. Once payment is taken, the staff member changes the paper tray accordingly and releases the relevant print queue to output the print. The process from payment to production takes only a few minutes, and even if the customer has ordered multiple copies at different sizes, the maximum wait time is 30 minutes. The Stylus Pro 4880 uses Epson’s UltraChrome K3 Vivid Magenta 8/9-colour ink set, which gives an exceptionally wide colour gamut and therefore the quality required by the National Portrait Gallery. Explore the Stylus Pro SP4880 at www.epson.co.uk and exceed your vision.

Other software is available

Photoshop is so commonly used as a name it generally covers for all image manipulation software, but it is important to remember it is not the only one you can use. Martin Christie writes…

A

dObe’s flAgshIp, In all its various guises, is certainly the most widely used digital imaging programme, and as such the name has become a descriptive term to encompass all virtual creative actions, much as Mister Hoover’s household device stands for most vacuum cleaners. Though Adobe prefer to discourage this generalisation officially, it cannot do the brand any harm to be so readily brought to mind when the opportunity arises, and it is a mark of the universal success of the product that it is so. The base of this success, of course, was being in at the start, more than twenty years ago, and to being part of the continued development of digital technology in all its many forms and factions. That and ensuring that a basic version of the software was packaged with the majority of digital devices, like cameras and scanners. Like Microsoft making sure that most people who learned computing began with their product, Adobe knew that both brand loyalty and familiarity were an essential part of marketing. But also like the Seattle giant a company that becomes so large and successful is the target not only for fierce competition, but for suggestions that it has become too big and unwieldy, and lost sight of some of the basics. It is not necessary to go into too much depth into issues with current software, but it is worthwhile for the copy shop to evaluate the options available, rather than just automatically plough down the Adobe line. The Creative Suite of programmes, introduced in 2003, is not just Photoshop, but layout creator InDesign and graphic drawer Illustrator. Together they are an immensely powerful set of digital tools, but they are also by necessity, seriously complicated. Most people with experience tend to be familiar with one or another. Fewer are masters of all. Copy shops have traditionally been great ones for on the job training,

essentially because a large part of the job has been quite functional - the production of print. The area of creative design has always been a difficult one to cover adequately - whether to have the expense of a dedicated expert, or rely on skills picked up by general staff along the way in a varied working environment. This is a dilemma because of the

variety and unpredictability of customers work, and how it needs to be handled - from the simple text of a business card, to the complex layout of a brochure - all require a certain amount of special attention. This has been made more complicated by two things - the more types of product that an on demand counter can produce, and the more types of files and formats

that can be presented by the customer. When it was a simple Photoshop file, a Jpeg or a PDF it wasn’t a huge technical step up from a hard copy. Even issues like colour profiles were easily dealt with by the limitations of the system. And file size, and consequent complexity, was limited by the capacity of transfer by disc or mail. Adobe have had to make their software package more complicated because of the relentless pace of innovation, and the demands of the creatives whether photographers, designers or illustrators - including all the many people whose work exists only on the web. The current CS5 is actually the twelfth major release of Photoshop since 1990 - that’s a new version every eighteen months on average. One of the bedrocks of Adobe philosophy however was to retain a certain continuity, in layout and function, so that anyone starting with the earlier products would not be completely lost navigating the newer versions. This even included keeping some items in the control panel that had become redundant, just to preserve appearances. It was inevitable though, that with a need to pack more and more functions into the toolbox, some major changes had to come, and like most changes there was good news and bad news. It was suggested that CS5’s launch was brought in earlier than planned because of issues with the previous CS4. There definitely was a question over colour profiles changing from previous versions running on a Windows platform. A significant loss in the package was the convenient contact sheet maker - allowing multiple files to be printed together at whatever size. Other than that, the way CS4 behaves In the workspace was just that little bit different from its predecessors, to make it more complicated. If you are working continually in one piece of software, you may get used to it. In a copy shop

environment, where you may for instance move from one computer to another, even a minor difference in an operating system can be a hindrance to workflow. Adobe, of course, does have a budget entry version of image management in Elements, but while handy for home use, it is very limited in a working context. Moving to an entirely different piece of software might then seem a monumental ask, but if the Adobe DNA is not too deeply embedded in the working environment, it is worth looking at alternatives. It has to be compatible with most file formats, of course, and be as user friendly as any sophisticated programme can be. Enter Corel Draw. Not a new product but one that has an even slightly longer heritage than Photoshop. It appeared in 1989 to give full colour vector graphics with easily adjustable form and shape to computer generated images. It also encompassed CAD based drawing files, making it extremely versatile. Within two years it had become a complete package with photo editing as well. I actually started my digital imaging adventure with an early version of Corel Draw, and Corel Photo Paint, and trialing the latest version, X5, was a bit like visiting an old friend who had a major cosmetic make over and body building course. It looked familiar, but with a lot more added on. So much added on you might need to make a bit of room for all the templates, fonts, stock images and vector shapes that come in the box. The box itself is worth a mention because unlike those which are packed with nothing but a disc and thin air, the Corel box has an easy to follow illustrated guide to the whole working package. Corel Draw runs on Windows operating systems exclusively, but it supports over 100 different file formats, including layered files and vectors, which can be opened or imported into a waiting template. A preview window in the dialogue guide gives an instant snapshot of

v i v i d.

supported files. Like most up to date multi-function programmes it needs a lot of room on the desktop itself, so a large monitor is recommended to take full advantage of its possibilities. Extras, add-ons, colour palettes are all displayed in boxes to the side of the main frame which can be minimised or expanded. Corel Draw essentially does everything you would expect to do using the full Adobe Creative suite collection, including three dimensional effects and output to web, so it covers everything from vector creation to pixel output. It looks a little like Photoshop at first glance, because like the driving space of a car, there are only so many things you can practically do with the layout of a working desktop. But it does things slightly differently, so anyone too set in the ways of Adobe may be initially

confused. Because it is predominantly a graphic design programme, actual photo editing is left to its complimentary partner, Photo Paint. The two can work independently or team up to cross-process files. In Photo Paint, images can also be

batch processed. Like Photoshop itself, it’s an advanced editing tool that will handle most professional tasks, rather than some other simple manipulation devices. What Corel Draw brings to the table, in addition to its functional tools, is a whole library of document templates, vector designs and stock images which can be pulled into use. Many are quite basic, but as a quick fix for an instant design job they are a perfect match for the copy shop when time and money is at a premium. And talking of time and money, the user friendly nature of Corel Draw means it is a programme that can be learnt on the job by someone with reasonable computer skills and an eye for creativity. Because it pulls everything into one interface, there is no time lost going from one programme to another, and pictures, fonts and shapes can be pushed and pulled around the document almost seamlessly. It’s only a matter of getting used to how Corel’s tools behave, which has got to be easier for someone with only a little knowledge of Photoshop or Illustrator. Hence there is no disadvantage to a member of staff with limited experience, and for whom expensive and time consuming training may not be an option. Initially it took me longer to do the same task in Corel Draw than it would in Photoshop, but only because I spend some part of every day of my week in Adobe’s finest at some time or another, and have done for some years now. At first it was like jumping into the driving seat of a car to discover someone had swopped the pedals round the wrong way, but after a few erratic manoeuvres, I started to get the hang of it and recall a few old remembered skills. Definitely worth considering for the studio if you are, once again, updating computers and needing new software, and you can try it for free to see if I’m right! More info from www.corel.com

ArjoWiggins campaign the use of Recycled Paper A

RJOWIggIns gRAphIC, hAs launched a mailer campaign and made significant improvements to the website, to provide designers, printers and corporates with the most up to date information on the benefits of recycled papers. By overhauling the website at www. recycled-papers.co.uk and developing Environmental Benefit Statements (EBS), that allow businesses to demonstrate the real impact of using recycled papers, Arjowiggins Graphic has made it easier and quicker for companies to show environmental transparency in a clear and visible manner. The inclusion of an EBS in corporate documents, annual reports and promotional literature provides companies with an excellent tool to communicate their CSR policies to clients. The mailer campaign has been launched to highlight exactly how an EBS allows businesses to make a real and tangible statement about their green credentials. Mailers will be sent to more than 6,000 designers, printers and corporates with examples of how an EBS clearly shows how much they have reduced their environmental impact by on any given print run. This means any company can show real, measurable benefits by using Arjowiggins Graphic’s range of recycled papers. The mailers have been designed around two concepts – ‘Introducing the designer label that doesn’t cost the earth’ and ‘The biggest thing in small print’. The mailers introduce an example of hi-res artwork that will be supplied to customers free of charge and shows exactly how an EBS will appear on any print job using Arjowiggins Graphic recycled papers clearly showing the precise environmental benefits.

The mailers also show how easy it is to obtain an EBS via the revamped website using the Arjowiggins Graphic recycled paper range. The website provides an interactive experience and includes diagrams of all aspects of the paper manufacturing process to bring essential recycling processes to life. Other exciting new additions to the website include: • Environmental calculator – check out the precise savings that are made by using Arjowiggins Graphic recycled paper compared to virgin fibre paper. See how much waste paper is diverted from landfill, how much less water, energy and wood are used and how much the CO2 emissions are reduced by – in detail and for that specific job • Paper selector – review and compare different Arjowiggins Graphic paper ranges and filter papers by recycled content, coated or uncoated, whiteness levels and brand names • Green info and comprehensive glossary – don’t get baffled by complex green terminology, instead look up green terms and read about specific issues to keep you well informed Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic Papers said: “In the last two years we have seen an unprecedented 140% rise in demand for recycled paper, highlighting the growing demand for sustainable paper stocks across business, print and design sectors. “The launch of our mailer campaign and improvements to the website is part of our overall strategy to provide the most up to date information to the market on the benefits of using recycled stocks that can enhance businesses’ CSR strategies and help meet their own green targets.”

Paper from the Portucel Soporcel group attains the European Ecolabel The Portucel Soporcel has recently been licensed to use the European Union Ecolabel on the paper it manufactures and markets. The EU Ecolabel promotes products and services that meet strict standards of environmental performance, which have for several years been incorporated into the management model adopted by the Portucel Soporcel group. In the office stationery and printing paper segment, the Ecolabel rules require the use of certified timber of known provenance and bans the use of substances harmful to the environment and human health. The rules also call for the use of renewable energy, implementation of a rigorous waste management system and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as of air and water pollution.

ARTSYSTEMS SEE STRONG LINKS FOR CHAIN OF CUSTODY

lAsT quarter, ArtSystems launched their unique Chain of Custody programme, offering resellers a chance to legitimately promote the PEFC certified chain of custody product, Xativa Sustain. Already, eight resellers have signed up to the programme and more enquiries are currently being processed. The new programme is free and still open to any reseller who wants to sell and promote the Xativa range of media. The rules are simple, and come with a great deal of support from ArtSystems. “There are huge benefits to the reseller here. The obvious one is that it’s the first programme of its kind and enables our resellers to be able to do this without being certified themselves. Our support for this programme also includes marketing collateral such as e-shot and advert templates, PR for willing participants plus expert knowledge and help from our in-house team should they eventually want to take their own chain of custody certification.” Steve Hawker, MD, ArtSystems Ltd ArtSystems introduced the Don’t Break The Chain of Custody programme to help resellers expand their business opportunities into or help them continue to do business with organisations such as Government Agencies, Local Authorities, Corporate, Retail, Education and some Environmental agencies who expect a certain level of supply chain certification from their suppliers. For more information on the Don’t Break the Chain of Custody reseller programme or for information on the Xativa Sustain range of products, contact ArtSystems on 0115 9380 380. www.artsystems.ltd.uk.

These environmental performance standards are the outcome of scientific research and wide-ranging consultation conducted by the European Union Ecolabelling Board, made up of competent bodies from the member States, representatives of environmental NGOs, industrial and consumer associations, trade unions and representatives of SMEs and the retail sector. The paper produced by the Group is an environmentally responsible product obtained from a natural and renewable resource planted specifically for this purpose. The award of the European Ecolabel will further reinforce the environmental positioning of the Group’s paper brands, sold in markets increasingly sensitive to environmental issues. Sustainable and aligned with best practice, the forest management of the Portucel Soporcel group is certified under the international scheme operated by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and under the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes). The industrial facilities operated by the Portucel Soporcel group are powered mainly from renewable sources.

Mondi wins three PPI Awards

Printed on Color Copy COATED glossy 135 gsm

Mondi, the global paper and packaging company accepted 3 awards at the 2010 PPI awards in categories for company, mill, and individual achievements: • The prize for the environmental strategy of the year in the company category for Mondi Group, Austria • The prize for the environmental strategy of the year in the mill category for Mondi SCP in Ruzomberok, Slovakia • The prize for the research achievement of the year for Andreas Kornherr from Mondi Uncoated Fine & Kraft Paper Peter Oswald, CEO of Mondi Europe & International, says: “These awards mean a lot to Mondi. We have worked hard for this and it is gratifying to receive recognition for our efforts in so many areas.” Environmental strategy of the year in the company category for Mondi Mondi Group’s overall focus on sustainability is entrenched in the belief that industry should play an important role in the global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the world’s ecosystems. To help meet these challenges, the Group concentrates on a series of environmental commitments regarding carbon based energy consumption; water consumption; emissions to air and water; waste generation and disposal and recycling of paper and board materials. The award acknowledges the comprehensive environmental improvement programme that spans a 5 year period and is supported by a number of efficiency projects. “We are very grateful to receive such a prestigious award” says Christian Ramaseder, Group Environmental Manager. “It is a testimony to having taken the right actions for reducing our environmental footprint and therefore becoming more resource efficient.”

Environmental strategy of the year in the mill category for Mondi SCP With the mill’s instrumental IMPULS project, Mondi SCP has implemented further environmental production processes to protect and maintain the ecosystem and beauty of the area. By implementing best available technologies (BAT), Mondi SCP decreased emissions to air by an average of 94% and water by 66%. Fresh water consumption decreased due to waste water reuse made possible by the mill’s biological waste water treatment plant. The mill also achieved reductions in energy consumption, relying primarily on green energy from biogenic sources for production. “We have undertaken significant measures to protect the surrounding environment at Mondi SCP and by doing so we also have a positive effect on the environment globally, “says Roman Senecky, Managing Director at Mondi SCP. “We are pleased to have this acknowledged by winning the award.”

Research achievement of the year in the category for individual achievements The prize for the research achievement of the year went to Andreas Kornherr of Mondi Uncoated Fine and Kraft Paper. Together with team members Paul Achatz and Gerhard Drexler, and in close cooperation with Prof. Georg Reischl from the University of Vienna’s Physics department, Kornherr was nominated for his Acoustic Dust Tester (ADT), a patented new method, which uses acoustic waves to impose defined mechanical stress on paper sheets to measure nano- and micro particle emissions. Kornherr comments, “It is very fulfilling to be part of a project that has a direct impact on subsequent processes within the paper industry.” The PPI Awards are organised by RISI, one of the leading information providers about the global forest products industry. The awards aim at honouring leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the pulp and paper industry. www.mondigroup.com

Print is a great Industry Print is a great industry – its official! And we don’t just mean it’s a great industry to work in either. On demand digital printers can benefit from litho print trade services without having to invest in new kit. Print plays a vitally important role in the performance of UK plc, and has huge economic significance nationally. Did you know that the UK print sector: • is the world’s fifth largest producer of printed products? • has a turnover of £14.3 billion? • has a gross value added of £6.4 billion? • has 10,500 companies? • employs 140,000 people? • had a positive trade balance of £1 billion in 2009? • made a capital investment of £700 million in 2008? Using data from a wide range of official sources, the BPIF has published a new flyer UK printing — the facts and figures. It sets out detailed information on the structure of the printing industry by region and product, as well as covering its economic importance and its productivity. It also highlights

the effectiveness and sustainability of print as a modern communications medium. The BPIF has produced this flyer as part of an ongoing programme of representational activity directed toward influencing government agencies and other organisations whose decisions impact on the industry’s interests. As with Priorities for Print – the lobbying document that the BPIF published earlier this year, UK printing – the facts and figures will be used to educate politicians, parliamentarians and public servants about the vital role print plays in today’s economy, and a copy is being sent to all MPs. The BPIF is keen to encourage companies to use in their own contacts with external audiences, including customers, and its handy fold up laminated format means it’s ideal to carry with you on your travels. Anyone wishing to purchase a supply of copies, or to receive a high-res file to enable their company to print some themselves, should email Helen Dunn at the BPIF at Helen. dunn@bpif.org.uk

RCS Enjoys Productivity of ‘Great’ Rapida 106

RCS Plc has increased productivity, boosted competitiveness and cut operational costs at its centralised print production facility in Nottinghamshire following the installation of a new generation B1 KBA press with QualiTronic production management systems. The higher performance five colour RAPIDA 106 plus coater features make readies in minutes and high production speeds for a highly flexible, market competitive solution. It replaces two manroland 700s maximising savings on production inputs, such as time and energy, and reducing waste, to deliver better returns per employee on capital employed. RCS managing director Michael Todd says: “It is a great machine. It makes a huge difference to the business. We have increased productivity and competitiveness while reinforcing our quality control regime and that is the key to any successful business in the future. “We chose to make the investment to help take us forward in a challenging climate. The innnovative on-press technology ensures we produce a high quality result, quickly, and have improved flexibility when it comes to job changes. This makes us very responsive and that is particularly important when job run lengths are getting shorter.” The highly equipped press features technological innovations to ensure every production second counts such as QualiTronic that matches printed sheets for content and quality against a master sheet while in full production. It is also equipped with KBA’s Simultaneous Plate Changing which allows faster changeover times, smoother operation, easy maintenance and cuts down on wasted sheets and DriveTronic SPC dedicated plate cylinder drive system. The latter is an intelligent software based solution supporting simultaneous plate changing in less than 60 seconds, regardless of the number of printing units. Because the make ready work and washing can also be carried out at the same time, it dramatically shortens changeover times. The reduced waste and lower power consumption of this press also helps RCS maintain its commitment to constantly review and improve its environmental performance. “Sustainability is essential to our operation and we are always looking to introduce new practices and technology rich solutions, such as the 106, to support this,” adds Mr Todd. The new addition complements recent investments in a KBA 162 large format press and finishing equipment. “KBA is delighted that its technology is being so successfully harnessed by such a dynamic and forward thinking company like RCS,” says Christian Knapp, KBA UK managing director. “The technology rich presses now in operation have created a strong market proposition that is continuing to service, to a very high quality, RCS’s solid blue chip customer base.” KBA UK: 01923 819922, www.kba-print.co.uk. Printed success story wins top accolade

An online printing company is celebrating after marking a period of strong growth with a major award.Fullcolourcards.co.uk, based in Durham, has won the Growth in Business category at the prestigious Star Radio Business Awards 2010, which highlight the best firms in County Durham and North Yorkshire. The recognition follows a year which has seen the company rapidly expand its service offering, grow its client base, and develop its online presence significantly. Earlier this year the business launched a new website to facilitate the expansion of its service offering by an additional 700 products. The company was originally conceived as a specialist business card printing firm but investment in technology has since given it the capacity to offer low cost, fast turnaround services for almost any printing need. It can now supply matt laminated business cards, leaflets, postcards, NCR pads, pop-up banners and a digital printing service which allows clients to order short run quantities from 10-150 items. Clients can even send print ready artwork to downloadable templates which, once processed, can then be posted to the client in an unmarked, white label package. Speaking after his company picked up one of the North East’s most competitive business awards, managing director Andrew Knowles said: “I’m really proud of what Full Colour Cards has achieved this year, which is a measure of how happy we keep our clients with our cost effective, speedy and high quality services. “Much of our growth has been driven by trade printers and designers who recognise our track record for producing first rate printed material at short notice to meet the tight deadlines that exist in the industry. “However, individuals, who may be self employed or working on a one off, bespoke project, are increasingly coming to us in need of small, affordable packages that don’t compromise on our very high standards.” From its headquarters in North East England, Fullcolourcards.co.uk services the entire UK market and promises delivery times that suit the varying demands of different sectors. Diversification by outsourcing

An introduction to a new friend of CSN, Scott Conway and his trade banner business. Venture Banners is filling the gap between your own investment and saying yes to customers LFP indoor and outdoor signage and poster requirements. Scott explains how diversification can help grow your business

“I

n the eighties, before I decided that large format printing might be a good way of putting bread on the table, I sold cars. I worked my way through the manufacturers and finally ended up at a specialist Porsche dealership in London. I worked there for five delightful years swanning around in some of the world’s finest cars, thinking I had it made. And then the recession of the early 90’s turned up and the 911 Porsche become the symbol of all that was wrong with the world, rather like Bankers today. One morning I went into work and found myself with a P45 in my hand watching the official receiver loading the cars onto the back of a transporter. That was my first lesson in diversification, or lack of it in this case. Diversifying is probably one of the best ways to grow your business and develop an all important survival strategy. Through diversification you get the chance to target new markets and offer a greater spectrum of services to your existing clients. However, a note of caution, there can be a risk that diversification will cause you to take your eye off the ball and in turn damage your core business. It’s important that diversification be a natural progression of your existing services and one that enables you to maintain your core values as a company. At Venture Trade we have just successfully launched a trade pack that gives everyone in the print industry the tools to integrate a very profitable large format banner printing service into their exiting portfolio using our expertise and equipment. Upon the launch of this pack and because our pricing policy is so keen, we’ve had companies with mid-sized machines literally divert all of their digitally printed banner work to us, enabling them to concentrate their machines on more profitable work. The added bonus to this is that there is absolutely no capital outlay to you as a business, we are able to deliver the banner(s) direct to your client under plain wrap leaving you free to concentrate on what you do best. Diversification by outsourcing could be the answer in these troubled economic times.” Details of the trade pack available at www.venturetrade.co.uk

‘A horse and a chicken are playing in a meadow. The horse falls into a mud hole and is sinking. He calls to the chicken to go and get the farmer to help pull him out to safety. The chicken runs to find the farmer, but the farmer can’t be found. So the chicken drives the farmer’s BMW 328 back to the mud hole and ties some rope around the bumper. He then throws the other end of the rope to the horse and drives forward saving him from sinking! A few days later the chicken and horse are playing in the meadow again and this time the chicken falls into a mud hole. The chicken yells to the horse to go and get some help from the farmer. The horse says, ‘I think I can stand over the hole!’ So the horse stretches over the width of the mud hole and says ‘Grab my ‘thingy’ and pull yourself up’. The chicken does and pulls himself to safety. The moral of the story: If you’re hung like a horse, you don’t need a BMW to pick up chicks.

Tired of constantly being broke, and stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife (with himself as the beneficiary), and arranging to have her killed. A ‘friend of a friend’ put him in touch with a nefarious underworld figure, who went by the name of ‘Artie.’ Artie explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was 5,000 quid. The husband said he was willing to pay that amount, but that he wouldn’t have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife’s insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid SOMETHING up front. The man opened up his wallet, displaying the single pound coin that rested inside. Artie sighed, rolled his eyes, and reluctantly agreed to accept the quid as down payment for the dirty deed. A few days later, Artie followed the man’s wife to the local Sainsbury’s. There, he surprised her in the produce department, and proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands. As the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath, and slumped to the floor, the manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly

onto the scene. Unwilling to leave any witnesses behind, Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well. Unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by hidden cameras and observed by the store’s security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught and arrested before he could leave the store. Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the sordid plan, including his financial arrangements with the hapless husband. And that is why, the next day in the newspaper, the headline declared: ‘ARTIE CHOKES TWO FOR A POUND AT SAINSBURYS.

Puzzled Salesmen A salesman walked into a bar and asked the bartender for a drink. Then he started to yell, “Yeah!” “Yeah!” Then five more salesmen came in and started to do the same thing. Then three more salesmen came in and one of them had a jig-saw puzzle. The bartender asked one of them, “Why are you yelling ‘yeah yeah!’?” Then one responded, “We did this puzzle in three hours and it says 2-3 years.”

Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did; for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his quarters and open a small safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, and then lock it back up. Afterwards, he would go about his daily duties. For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope. One day the captain died at sea. After laying the captain’s body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, and opened it and... The first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others. Four words were on the paper; two lines with two words each: ‘Port Left’, ‘Starboard Right’

Wrestling Woe Our story begins at the Olympics, specifically the wrestling event. It is narrowed down to the Russian or the American for the gold medal. Before the final match, the American wrestler’s trainer comes to him and says, ‘Now don’t forget all the research we’ve done on this Russian. He’s never lost a match because of this ‘pretzel’ hold he has. Whatever you do, don’t let him get you in this hold! If he does, you’re finished!’ The wrestler nods in agreement. Now, to the match: The American and the Russian circle each other several times looking for an opening. All of a sudden the Russian lunges forward, grabbing the American and wrapping him up in the dreaded pretzel hold. A sigh of disappointment goes up from the crowd, and the trainer buries his face in his hands for he knows all is lost... He can’t watch the ending. Suddenly there’s a scream, a cheer from the crowd, and the trainer raises his eye just in time to see the Russian flying up in the air. The Russian’s back hits the mat with a thud, and the American weakly collapses on top of him, getting the pin and winning the match. The trainer is astounded! When he finally gets the American wrestler alone, he asks, ‘How did you ever get out of that hold? No one has ever done it before!’ The wrestler answers, ‘Well, I was ready to give up when he got me in that hold, but at the last moment, I opened my eyes and saw this pair of balls right in front of my face. I thought I had nothing to lose, so with my last ounce of strength I stretched out my neck and bit those babies just as hard as I could. ‘You’d be amazed how strong you get when you bite your own balls!

inners Disclosure Some race horses staying in a stable. One of them starts to boast about his track record. “In the last 15 races, I’ve won 8 of them!” Another horse breaks in, “Well in the last 27 races, I’ve won 19!!” “Oh that’s good, but in the last 36 races, I’ve won 28!” says another, flicking his tail. At this point, they notice that a greyhound dog has been sitting there listening. “I don’t mean to boast,” Says the greyhound, “but in my last 90 races, I’ve won 88 of them!” The horses are clearly amazed. “Wow!” says one, after a hushed silence. “A talking dog.”

Mahatma Ghandi Mahatma Ghandi walked barefoot everywhere, to the point that his feet became quite thick and hard. He also was quite a spiritual person. Even when he was not on a hunger strike, he did not eat much and became quite thin and frail. Furthermore, due to his diet, he ended up with very bad breath. He came to be known as the ‘Super callused fragile mystic plagued with halitosis’

Who’s a clever parrot then? A magician was employed by a Shipping Line to entertain the passengers during cruises. The captain owned a parrot which always insisted on being part of the acts put on by the magician. He would perch on the edge of the stage and screech, “He does it with a mirror” or “He’s got it up his sleeve.” The magician was furious, but since the bird was a favourite with the captain and he was anxious to retain his position for future cruises, he maintained an angry silence. One evening as the magician worked, the parrot continued to harass the unfortunate man. Sadly the ship ran into a mine which had become detached from the sea floor after a storm. The explosion tore the bow off the ship which sank within a few minutes. Amid the wreckage and the lifeboats, the magician sat on one end of a table from the first class dining room. At the other end sat the parrot, dirty and dishevelled, his feathers caked with fuel oil. For some time they eyed each other malevolently saying nothing. Finally the parrot shook himself and advanced across the table. He fixed the magician with a beady eye. “Okay, I give up,” he squawked. “What did you do with the ship?”

Have you got the time? Bloke: ‘Hey, have you seen my new watch?’ Girl: ‘Why what does it do?’ Bloke: ‘It talks to me!’ Girl: ‘OK, so what’s it telling you now? ‘Bloke: ‘It says you’re not wearing any knickers’ Girl: ‘Well it doesn’t work then, because I am wearing knickers. ‘Bloke: ‘Damn thing, must be an hour fast’ Frozen Assets A farmer goes out to his field one morning only to find all of his cows frozen solid. As far as the eye can see are cows, motionless like statues. It had been a bitterly cold night, but he’d never thought anything like this would happen. The realisation of the situation then dawned on him. With his entire livestock gone, how would he make ends meet? How would Mhe feed his wife and kids? How would he pay the mortgage? He sat with his head in his hands, trying to come to terms with his impending poverty. Just then, an elderly woman walked by, “What’s the matter?” asked the old lady. The farmer gestured toward the frozen cows and explained his predicament to the woman. Without hesitation the old woman smiled and began to rub one of the cows noses. After a few seconds the cow began to twitch and was soon back to normal and chewing the cud. One by one, the old woman defrosted the cows until the whole field was full of healthy animals. The farmer was delighted and asked the woman what she wanted as a repayment for her deed. She declined his offer and walked off across the field. A passer-by who had witnessed the whole thing approached the farmer. “You know who that was don’t you?” asked the passer-by. “No” said the farmer “who?”* “That was Thora Hird.”

Plane Selfish One night, a Delta twin-engine puddle jumper was flying somewhere above New Jersey. There were five people on board: the pilot, Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, the Dali Lama, and a hippie. Suddenly, an illegal oxygen generator exploded loudly in the luggage compartment, and the passenger cabin began to fill with smoke. The cockpit door opened, and the pilot burst into the compartment. ‘Gentlemen,’ he began, ‘I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that we’re about to crash in New Jersey. The good news is that there are four parachutes, and I have one of them!’ With that, the pilot threw open the door and jumped from the plane. Michael Jordan was on his feet in a flash. ‘Gentlemen,’ he said, ‘I am the world’s greatest athlete. The world needs great athletes. I think the world’s greatest athlete should have a parachute!’ With these words, he grabbed one of the remaining parachutes, and hurtled through the door and into the night. Bill Gates rose and said, ‘Gentlemen, I am the world’s smartest man. The world needs smart men. I think the world’s smartest man should have a parachute, too.’ He grabbed one, and out he jumped. The Dali Lama and the hippie looked at one another. Finally, the Dali Lama spoke. ‘My son,’ he said, ‘I have lived a satisfying life and have known the bliss of True Enlightenment. You have your life ahead of you; you take a parachute, and I will go down with the plane. ‘The hippie smiled slowly and said, ‘Hey, don’t worry, pop. The world’s smartest man just jumped out wearing my backpack.

Pushover A man is in bed with his wife when there is a rat-a-tat-tat on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it’s half past three in the morning. “I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows. “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife. So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is man standing at the door. It didn’t take the homeowner long to realise the man was drunk. “Hi there,” slurs the stranger. “Can you give me a push??” “No, get lost. It’s half past three. I was in bed,” says the man and slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says, “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby sitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again? What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost??” “But the guy was drunk,” says the husband. “It doesn’t matter,” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the right thing to help him.” So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, “Hey, do you still want a push??” And he hears a voice cry out, “Yeah, please.” So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, “Where are you?” And the stranger replies, “I’m over here, on your swing.”
