Do you usually make ‘owt over the summer?

This is our 26th year running a print shop on the South Coast and 17th year assembling our team tactics in this our CSMA club magazine and we are none the wiser really, well maybe a tad.

We have gone through the never taking any time off stage as we found no one missed us too much, ahh, sound familiar? If not you should try it, especially in July or August.

Then followed years spent dreaming up aimless activity to keep everyone busy in the summer during the holiday season, now that is a clue really. Holidays. 25% of your customers may be away at the same time, school holidays mean mass exodus. You cannot buck this trend so tune in and either get away yourself or plan some extra summery sales. Language schools, Art Shows, Sports Schools, Exhibitions, T-shirts, Hens, Stags, Fun Runs etc… then Back to School and round you go again.

I guess we all very much flagged out due to the footie, but hey there are so many other sporting and social events needing outside signage. Nail your print credentials to the mast and get out there with your own banner and flag samples to lead by example.

As usual we have projects and beta testing throughout the break and you are invited to get involved.

Canon colour light production printer wins EDP award

Comprising publishers of leading European magazines devoted to digital printing, the EDP Association represents

Hampshire Flag on top of the world Flags manufactured by a south coast firm have made their way across the North Pole thanks to Kevin Sheppard’s successful completion of a challenging race to raise money and awareness for a children’s bereavement charity.

Hampshire Flag supported the 39 year old from Gloucestershire’s ambitious 350 mile race across the High Arctic to the Magnetic North, which took him 15 days, by donating three flags to take on the expedition and help raise money and awareness of the charity Winston’s Wish.

As one of only 42 who took part in last month’s race, Kevin had to pull his sledge across frozen wastelands battling against severe storms and high winds which at times reached 35mph. He was also having to navigate with the visibility as low as 20-30ft.

The flag manufacturer has supported Kevin’s mission from the outset by providing three bespoke 68 x 38cm flags; two featuring the Team Sheppard/ Winston’s Wish logos and one for another of Kevin’s sponsors, R&H Interiors.

Kevin said, “I am ecstatic to have completed what was the most challenging 15 days of my life. The conditions were far harsher than I had ever imagined and I lost eight kilos in weight, trekking for up to 23 hours a

day to ensure I reached the finish line on time.

“Knowing I was raising money and awareness for Winston’s Wish however was all the motivation and encouragement I needed to press on.

Flying the flags at the North Pole was emotional and much dreamed about and I really appreciate Hampshire Flag for making this a reality,” added Kevin.

Kevin lost his brother 27 years ago due to a motorbike accident when he was just 13 so Winston’s Wish, a leading authority in childhood bereavement, is a charity close to his heart. He aims to inspire young children from all backgrounds to achieve their own aspirations, goals and ambitions through Team Sheppard.

‘Print is back in business.’ IPEX sparks new wave of industry optimism

P

rofessor Frank Romano, international analyst and Ipex ‘Champion in Print’ best summed up the mood of exhibitors and visitors when he declared that “Ipex 2010 has demonstrated that the printing industry is back in business”.

Visitor attendance was over 50,000 from 135 countries, excluding over 20,000 exhibitor, agents, dealers, distributor, OEM’s and 500 international media personnel. Most significantly, the international ratio has increased by 8% compared to 2006, with the overall visitor attendance representing 48%. This makes Ipex more international than any other business to business event in the UK. The largest overseas visitor groups came from France, Germany, Netherlands with a 4% overall increase from Western Europe. Notable increases in attendance levels came from Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa as well as China and India. Exhibitors commented on the high level of personnel seniority from both overseas and UK companies. 77% of attendees were senior managers, company directors and owner/managers.

Trevor Crawford, Ipex 2010 event director, commented: “We’re delighted with the visitor numbers which are roughly in line with 2006, despite considerable industry consolidation. The notable increase in international visitors underlines the importance of Ipex to the printing industry.

A far-reaching integrated marketing campaign, including successful international roadshows and a comprehensive co-marketing programme, came together to deliver an international decision making and buying audience.”

With over 1,000 exhibiting companies from 40 countries, Ipex 2010 provided a spectacular showcase of the best in printing equipment, workflow and consumables. Trevor Crawford continued: “ At Ipex 2010, the industry’s leading suppliers certainly inspired visitors with exciting new technology, but we believe Ipex 2010 will be remembered, first and foremost, as the moment when printers showed renewed confidence and moved to invest in the future of their business.”

Record levels of business

Exhibitors reported record levels of business, with tens of millions of pounds worth of deals closed at the show, for both digital and offset technologies. HP surpassed its revenue and lead generation targets July-August 2010 | Copy Shop News

as of day five. Xerox sold in excess of 100 digital systems at the show. Canon exceeded targets, with 250 production and light production print engines sold, supported by strong solution sales. Konica Minolta’s order intake surpassed expectations, with orders taken during the first three days covering the cost of participation. Heidelberg reported orders for 140 printing units in the UK alone and AGFA generated more than € 25 million worldwide sales. Finishing specialist Duplo lauded Ipex as the company’s most successful show ever, with more than £2 million worth of orders.

Nick Craig Waller, Ipex 2010 Marketing Director said: “Two phrases spearheaded our global campaign for Ipex 2010: Perfect Time, Perfect Place, One Unique Opportunity and Marketing Print’s Potential. Both have resonated extremely well with visitors and exhibitors. Feedback confirms that Ipex has played a key role in re-igniting the global industry and provided the catalyst the market was seeking. While we’ve set our own targets, ultimately, we judge the show on the business results our exhibitors have achieved. By that measure, Ipex has been a tremendous success.”

Over a third of the exhibitor base had never participated in the event, demonstrating how Ipex continues to evolve and attract new companies and reflecting the status of Ipex as an international launch pad to the graphic arts industry. Ipex newcomer, web-to-print company Red Tie has been thrilled with the quality of enquiries, and Israeli digital print supplier Scodix commented on the high volume of sales and have confirmed their attendance at Ipex 2014.

The following is just a small selection of quotes from exhibitors as the show was closing; Laurence Roberts, Ipex 2006 President &AGFAUKMD, commented:“There has been a real buzz at the show and having generated more than €25 million worldwide sales, we’re more than delighted. We’ve also noted a significant increase in the number of international visitors, in particular from Brazil, Africa and India. IIR has done a fantastic job in organising the event.”

PICON Council Member and joint managing director of Apex Digital Graphics, Bob Usher, said: “There has been an air of optimism amongst both visitors and exhibitors that has lead to a very successful IPEX. We already have orders for all of the Ryobi press equipment on the stand, and are taking away many excellent sales leads.”

Director, Canon Europe said: “Canon came to Ipex 2010 with high hopes generated by the results of our latest industry survey, which reported a growing sense of optimism in the market. I’m delighted to say that those hopes have been more than fulfilled.

Peter Jolly, Marketing Director at Duplo UK commented: “Ipex 2010 has been the most successful show for Duplo ever with all machines sold from the stand. We’ve taken more than £2 million worth of orders during the show, more than double the amount we had taken one month after the show had finished last time around. This includes a single order of over £500,000 from the Synergie Group. We’ve also sold our first Alpha Saddle to the UK market.”

“IPEX is back to being a truly international show and we have benefitted from serious investors from all over the world coming to see our new SurePress L-4033A digital label press and our range of high-end commercial and packaging proofing Stylus Pro printers and media,” says Duncan Ferguson, Director of ProGraphics, Epson Europe.

Richard de Boissezon, Worldwide Marketing Manager, HP Graphics Solutions Business comments: “Expectations exceeded! We are happy to announce that at Ipex 2010, HP surpassed its revenue and lead generation targets as of day five. We experienced strong demand for our entire graphic arts portfolio, with visitors coming from many faraway places. Ipex 2010 proves that digital printing is the mainstay. That’s a fact.”

Comments Marc Fischer, marketing manager for Kern: “Ipex has been very successful for the Kern Group and has proved itself as an important ‘place to be’ for anyone in this business.”

Konica Minolta UK’s Pauline Brooks, Group Product Manager for the Production Print Divison UK says: “We came to Ipex with realistic expectations, but the show has exceeded all our projected goals. We sold two bizhub PRESS C8000 on the very first day and sales have continued throughout the show. The raft of orders we now have on the books is a terrific endorsement of the R&D investment that has gone into the new system. Its performance and specification have had our stand buzzing. We are delighted with what we’ve achieved at Ipex.”

Ronald van Hees, Director of Marketing, Pitney Bowes: “Ipex 2010 has been a big success for Pitney Bowes. We announced the launch of IntelliJet 20 inkjet print system for the transactional market to huge interest from across the globe.

Iain Bullock, Renz, UK MD, “Ipex has exceeded all our expectations. It is living up to being a selling show with £100,000 worth of new orders in the first three days of the show. It’s the first time for a long time that everyone seems to be very positive about the future.

Roland DG wins Three Awards for Its Innovative Inkjet Technology

DUPLO ANNOUNCE MOST SUCCESSFUL SHOW EVER d

UPlo international have announced IPEX 2010 as their most successful exhibition on record.

The print finishing manufacturer announced sales of over £2 million taken during the show, which included their biggest ever single UK deal to Synergie worth over £570,000. Duplo have also announced that a record 2,000 visitors came to their stand which they hope will open up new opportunities to push their sales from IPEX to ‘up to near £5 million within the next 12 months’.

The show was the UK launch for their new fully automated saddle stitcher, The Alpha Saddle, of which five were sold, the first to M & H Printers in Walsall.

Tony Lock , Managing Director Duplo UK explains his delight at Duplo’s success; “To be honest, we were absolutely staggered with the success of IPEX 2010 for Duplo. I don’t think we were the only exhibitor with their fingers crossed at quarter to ten on the first day not knowing what to expect.” He continued “We sold absolutely everything from our stand but what pleased me most was the genuine interest across all products. After the second day we had to send for more staff to help us man our booth.”

Duplo’s theme for the eight days was Automated Precision, with the promise that all machines in their portfolio come ‘with 60 seconds or less set-up time and precise finishing giving a quality finished product’.

Also, for the first time Duplo had onsite finance company Print Finance as residents on their stand, to help close the many deals that were happening daily.

Whilst the tangible sales taken during the show were clearly the main highlight for the Esher-based

company, Lock explains there were many other factors adding to the success; “We also made significant progress with our digital vendor partners by having a huge presence on their stands and making noteworthy sales, such as the DC-645 with DIFS sale to Oxuniprint via Canon. As well as this we had the announcement of our new relationship with Ricoh Europe, our new In-line Alpha Saddle with HP Indigo plus the announcement of the UK distributorship of Fujipla laminators. In addition we had some fantastic synergy amongst our Finishing Alliance partners, with some large sales with Renz equipment and some great onsite sales activity with Friedheim, combining our kit with their products to create total finishing package solutions. There were so many positives to report.”

“Overall, what really pleased us was the shift toward finishing in the industry. No longer are we seen as the baby brother of the industry, I think IPEX 2010 will be remembered as the show where finishing came to the fore in the print industry.”

However, as Jolly concludes, it was not only the amount of traffic on the stand that was the real shock for Duplo; “Tony has been Managing Director for just 9 months, but in that time he has created real positivity amongst our staff and to ensure total staff focus at IPEX, he introduced a ‘Warrior Monk’ regime; alcohol intake was kept to a bare minimum and 6.30am gym and running sessions took place every morning. orth west Printers Paper Innovation were honoured to be asked to produce a special edition of the book that celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the 1966 World Cup. A limited 6

number of copies have been printed at the Preston site as part of the build up to this year’s World Cup. This new publication was launched at The England 1966 World Cup Winners Theatre Show on 3 May at the The Brigewater Hall, Manchester. Managing Director, Steve Johnston was invited to experience the event and, in an unexpected surprise, introduced to Sir Geoff Hurst and other members of the winning ‘66 squad.

Xerox caps off successful IPEX 2010 Xerox believes that, following IPEX 2010, the graphic communications industry is emerging from the recession leaner and even more driven to take advantage of the opportunities presented by digital print. The number of signings closed at the show indicated print providers were bullish on the future and viewed digital print as a viable way to expand existing business and attract new customers.

Xerox featured 18 pieces of technology at IPEX 2010, including a demonstration of Xerox’s production inkjet technology, and the new Xerox Colour 1000 Press. The stand also included new business development tools, workflow enhancements, and the Real Business Live Theatre, which drew on industry expertise and customers’ business models to bring to life the opportunities for success in the world of digital printing.

“The new technologies and tools that Xerox revealed during IPEX demonstrate the broadening scope of revenue-generating print applications now available.” said Peter Taylor, director and general manager, Large Enterprise & Graphic Communications, Xerox UK. “Our stand was consistently busy throughout the show’s run with considerable interest from attendees in learning more about Xerox’s technology, workflow and business development tools.”

Xerox’s Best-of-the-Best contest honoured digital printing applications produced by members of the Xerox Premier Partners Global Network.

Applications from more than 17 countries were judged on image quality, business results and the use of Xerox technology in the following categories: books, collateral, digital and offset, direct marketing, photo publishing, and transpromo. Three winners were honoured in each category.

This year’s winning print providers, in alphabetical order, are: Cathedral Corporation; ColorCentric Corporation; ColorFast, S.A. de C.V.; De Budelse b.v.; dsicmm Group Limited; DMM, Inc.; Global Diseña; Keiger Direct; LaserTryk. dk; Lateral Group; MBA Group Ltd; medialogik GmbH; Pondres; Progressive Communications; TeleMail; TOCHO Co, Ltd; and Wuhan Caifeng Digital Image Express Printing Co. Ltd. A sampling of the winners includes: • U.K.-based Lateral Group, an integrated communications management company, produced a campaign for the British government’s Change4Life campaign, which is aimed at raising obesity awareness. The integrated campaign demanded a complex and robust mix of variable data points and were printed on a Xerox iGen3 110 Digital Production Press using software from XMPie, a Xerox company.

The resulting campaign generated 200 percent more registrations than 8

expected. Lateral Group has engaged in similar campaigns for a harmful drinking awareness programme for a global pharmaceutical and consumer goods company.

• MBA Group created the world’s first 100 percent variable publication that integrated personalised content on select pages throughout the magazine, generating 256 percent more leads for advertisers. The U.K.-based company produced the magazine, with a circulation of 12,000, on a Xerox 980 Colour Continuous Feed Printing System using XMPie software.

• Mexico-based commercial print provider ColorFast created a promotional calendar to highlight its capabilities to customers and prospects. Printed on the Xerox 700 Digital Colour Press, it helped the company improve sales by 60 percent over the previous year.

• LaserTryk took advantage of the printing quality of the Xerox 1300 Continuous Feed Printing System, Nuvera 200 EA Perfecting Production System and Xerox iGen3 110 press to produce offset quality, short run black and white books on demand.

The Denmark based company captured sales with publishers who wanted the look of traditional offset without the hassle of extra stock and warehousing costs. The fleet of Xerox solutions offers LaserTryk significant flexibility – using the iGen3 press for short run colour covers, and the black and white systems for high quality pages inside.

Morgana’s New PUR Binders LABEL PRINTING FOR COPY SHOPS

Rapid and Memjet have combined their technical skills to produce these machines. Labels up to a maximum of 220mm can be output in two qualities – 1600 x 1600dpi and 1600 x 800dpi. Using the former resolution the machines will generate 9 metres of labels per minute whilst using the latter resolution will double this output to 16 metres per minute.

The print head itself utilises an incredible 70,400 nozzles to deliver the five colour (CMYK + K) water based dye inks to the label, generating fantastically sharp and vibrant prints every time.

A new range of PUR binders from Morgana consists of three models suitable for short run work in the digital environment. All have fully enclosed gluing systems and are fitted with automatic cleaning systems to make them more user friendly.

The new Morgana Pioneer is unique in being able to produce both soft cover volumes and book blocks for producing case bound books. It will produce 200 soft covers or 150 book blocks per hour in sizes up to 450mm and 50mm thick. The system is fully enclosed and all operations – including cleaning – are controlled automatically from a touch screen.

The new Morgana Explore also has a unique feature in that it can be used for both PUR or conventional hot melt binding, a great advantage for users who need to produce many different types of work. It operates at a highly productive 500 cycles per hour and also offers all the benefits of an enclosed system with automatic operation and cleaning. It makes books up to 450mm x 50mm thick.

The Morgana Adventure is a low price, small footprint unit which, at 200 cycles per hour, is aimed at the lower volume user. Despite its low price tag, it also offers automatic operation and automatic cleaning can be specified. It can produce volumes up to 450mm x 50mm.

Morgana’s managing director, Quen Baum, claims that the new range gives printers – and particularly digital printers – greater choice and greater flexibility than has been previously available in PUR binders. “We believe that our enclosed system design offers significant advantages, not only because of cleanliness and ease of operation, but because there is no waste and the systems can be left on stand-by.”

The Rapid X1 is a small footprint roll to roll printer that can handle a roll of labels up to an outside diameter of 305mm, and incorporates an optical sensor for pre-cut and stripped labels. Manufactured with an all steel chassis it will sit comfortably on a desk top with the roll to roll system avoiding messy output by automatically spooling the printed labels. For short runs this can be over ridden with the labels being manually removed from the printer. Even maintenance has been made quick and easy with the Memjet head being hot-swappable making it an easy task for the operator should it be necessary. The real beauty of this machine is that it runs from a PC where the operator can generate 1 or 1000 labels at the same unit cost.

The Rapid X2 is, effectively, the big brother of the X1.

Technically it has the same specifications except that it can handle a roll of labels with an outside diameter of 650mm. It also utilises a loop out-feed enabling it to be used in-line with post finishing equipment.

In terms of its media handling ability the X2 is a more industrious machine even though it uses the same Memjet print-head technology and has the same production capacity as the X1. Put bluntly, the X2 is more suitable for the larger producer of labels.

MUTOH RELEASES VIPER TX SOFT SIGN PRINTERS Wide format inkjet printer manufacturer Mutoh are releasing a new series of direct to fabric printers, called Viper TX Soft Sign series.

Available in 1620 mm (63.78”) and 2210 mm (87”) widths, the Viper TX Soft Sign printers offer a total solution for direct printing of polyester fabrics with open or closed structure. The printers incorporate all features required to accurately load, transport and tension, dry, heat fix and roll up finished prints, ready for use. Tuned to Mutoh’s new VOC-free water based direct disperse inks, the new engines deliver typical production speeds up to 37 m²/h and top engine speeds up to 77 m²/h.

The new Mutoh Viper TX Soft Sign printers have been purposely built for professional soft signage print businesses looking for an integrated workflow to print directly onto polyester fabrics like flags. The printers are suited for a wide variety of applications: heavy duty flags, banners, architectural graphics, sport arena displays, wall murals, home furnishings, curtains and much more.

“We have been marketing wide format dye sub and direct textile printers developed and manufactured at our Belgian factory since 2004. The Viper TX Soft Sign printer’s integrated infra red dryer and fan bank will dry the printed fabric before heat fixation. After drying, the printed fabric will run into the fixation unit, consisting of a contact drum with integrated infra red lamp. Its typical working temperature is 180 °C. The fixation time depends on the print mode that is used. The fabric process can be easily controlled via a touch display on a swivel arm. The in-line fabric drying and fixation system has no cooling down delay. An integrated switch ON timer makes sure the printer is ready in the morning.

Fabric transport has been made easy with the fully motorised heavy duty unwinding/winding system with dancer bars for media rolls up to 150 kg. The system is ready for inside and outside unwinding and winding. Perfect fabric tracking with the front and back belt system delivers straight winding of finished prints onto the take-up roll.

The new printers incorporate 8 drop-on-demand piezo inkjet heads. Each head has 2 x 180 nozzles. Using Dynamic Variable Dot Imaging Technology, each ink droplet is individually adjustable to provide high speed and high quality printing with low ink consumption. The printers incorporate Mutoh’s awardwinning Intelligent Interweaving print technology.

To remove vapours when heat fixing direct printed fabrics, the machines can be directly connected to Mutoh’s optional fume extraction system.

Connection is possible via multiple connection points. A hose will then make the connection with the fume extraction system.

The printers can also be connected to Mutoh’s optional bulk ink system offering long unattended printing options along with minimum user intervention.

The Soft Sign printers have been tuned to Mutoh’s VOC free water based direct disperse inks. They feature excellent nozzle stability, offer a large colour gamut and have an excellent outdoor durability, rated up to 1 year. Available in 1 litre bottles, these inks deliver top scores in wash fastness and perspiration, while allowing direct printing onto polyester fabrics with no need for washing.

itney Bowes Inc. has announced it is expanding its line of high speed digital colour printing systems. The new offering, the Pitney Bowes IntelliJet 20 printing system, will help more companies transition their printed communications from monochrome to colour simply and cost effectively, and communicate more effectively with their audiences. The new system which was on display at Ipex complements the IntelliJet 30 printing system, which Pitney Bowes launched in 2009.

This is all very well for the manufacturer helping them to meet their environmental and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) targets, but how does it help the independent copy and print business? By running a print system under this

scheme, you too, are able to utilise its Carbon Zero credentials. Advertising to your customers that you are able to offer Carbon Zero prints for any job run on the Toshiba product, is a very attractive and unique proposition. With huge interest from both business and public users alike it’s important to get this message to your customers in the shop front and include it within your quotations. Surf’s up for FESPA 2010

Would-be ‘waveriders’ from the global imaging community made their way to Munich to catch the new wave of innovation at FESPA 2010, the most comprehensive FESPA event ever. It covered five entire halls of Messe Munich, 25% larger than FESPA 2005 in the same venue, with over 700 exhibiting companies and around 30,000m2 of exhibition space.

he event was divided into clearly signposted Digital, Screen and Fabric zones, addressing the needs of visitors from all geographical regions, producing all types of printed products and at all stages of their technological evolution.

FESPA Managing Director Frazer Chesterman commented: “FESPA 2010 is by far the most significant event worldwide embracing screen and digital processes, and the full gamut of commercial and industrial applications.

It provides the perfect environment for printers evaluating how to adapt their business to an altered climate, a changing work profile and shifting customer needs. Signs are that the economic storm is blowing over, and the swell of optimism in our community is gathering momentum day by day.

FESPA 2010 mirrored the diversity of today’s blended wide format production environments. With 150 exhibitors, screen printing occupied an entire hall, while digital technologies expanded to fill three halls at the show, reflecting the industry’s dramatic progress to digital production since the last FESPA to be held in Munich in 2005.

For the first time at FESPA, the specific needs and interests of garment printers were met with a dedicated ‘event within an event’ under the new FESPA Fabric banner, bringing together more than 180 exhibitors in this area alone, and offering a dedicated educational programme and Fabric Live! fashion show.

dominated the marketing campaign for FESPA 2010 was reflected throughout the show, with the striking wave structure and graphics of FESPA’s own stand and the two Innovation Theatres sure to catch the eye of all visitors. Show goers were met in the Messe entrance atrium by a team of FESPA ‘Lifeguards’ offering information and pointers on how to make the most of their visit. The Surf Shack being the place to buy a limited edition T-shirt as a memento of the show, with the proceeds going to FESPA’s chosen pancreatic cancer charity.

An action packed timetable of FESPA Innovate! events ran alongside the exhibition, offering FESPA ‘surfers’ the chance to take part in inspirational and informative sessions on dozens of topics ranging from planet friendly printing to digital signage, from direct to garment to workflow automation.

Those looking for more visual stimulation found it in with the FESPA Wrap Cup delivering some high speed vehicle wrapping action.

Most customers, even if they have the scanner, will find the options a little daunting, and unlikely to know what to do with the file even if they could create it. The ubiquitous JPEG is an 8 bit file format, so saving it as one defeats the object. Similarly, with a digital camera, saving a quality image as a JPEG is throwing away a massive amount of captured information from the original device. For a lot of applications, the quality will be acceptable. But if you are going for fine tuning and colour accuracy you need to go for a more sophisticated formula.

Although we have an A2 scanner, I am more often using photography with

difficult or oversize originals. One of the advantages of photography, using the option of studio lights with reflectors and diffusers, is that I am able to create flat lighting ideal for artwork that has texture, relief or has been heavily or unevenly glazed. The latter causes patches of glare on a normal scanner, or flare if you use a standard on camera flash.

I am using a very good 12 Megapixel Digital SLR with a top of the range Nikon lens as well. That makes a whacking difference in initial sharpness and vibrance in the original image, but the final trick is in post processing. I tend to shoot a JPEG first, for convenience, just like we used to use a Polaroid to check

lighting and composition. Then I shoot in RAW, which is the unprocessed file format which can be processed on the computer with compatible software to output a 16bit (x3 colour) TIFF file for fine tuning. Pretty well all high-end digital cameras can shoot RAW files, and most amateur photographers are aware of and may use them. But whether your average customer would be able to do anything with it, like the scanner issue, is another matter.

This is where the professional tips and experience come into their own. When quoting on scanning or photography it’s important that the skill and expertise is appreciated as well as the equipment.

When I get the “It’s ok I have a camera” or “I have a friend who has a scanner” I know there is no point explaining further. When they come in with something that won’t print like it’s supposed to, then is the time to resume the conversation.

One of the advantages of processing a RAW file on the computer is that you will be using a faster and therefore better

processor than is likely to be in the camera with its limited space. You can also do your editing at your own pace, and save versions at different stages, rather than let the camera itself make an instant, irrevocable choice in a JPEG. Traditional film, because it was developed as an optical projection format, was virtually seamless in its tonal range — colours would blend gently into each other. The digital image relies on the processing software to decide when one colour becomes another, and how harsh the transition between them is recorded.

With small bit files, that step is always going to be severe, as recorded in the spikes and dips of the Levels Histogram.

Large bit files have a massive advantage in being able to fill the gaps with much useful information that will make a difference when finally sent down to the printer. It’s the printer that ultimately has to make the split second decision on what shade of what colour in will finally spit out. The more help you can give it the better!

First record label to use PEFC on its sleeve A new 12” album hits the shops next month – Brownswood Recordings’ Havana Cultura Remixed presented by internationally renowned DJ Gilles Peterson. What makes this album unique is that it is the first to print the record sleeve on Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) certified paper and will also use the logo to prove it.

The album packaging was produced

by London based project management company, Clear Sound & Vision Ltd. UPM Shotton’s Sustainable Schools Day o

ver 10 sChoolChildren from across North Wales, Cheshire and the Wirral took part in a series of hands on science and sustainability workshops at UPM Shotton recently.

Supported by Business in the Community and Techniquest Wrexham, 115 primary schoolchildren were given the opportunity to learn about paper – including making their very own hand made paper squares – as well as renewable energy and a tour of UPM Shotton’s state-of the art paper mill.

In the afternoon 47 senior school students were invited to a sustainability workshop and mill tour as recognition for their participation in the Make It in Manufacturing Challenge in which UPM Shotton was chosen as the regional manufacturing partner.

The events were part of the UK’s largest newsprint paper mill’s silver jubilee which took place over three days recently, marking 25 years of sustainable manufacturing on the former British Steel site. In May 1985 the Shotton Paper mill commenced operation. Since that date it has received continued investment helping it win several awards including the Queen’s Award: Sustainable Development in 2009. In January 2010, the mill announced a £17m investment to build a materials recovery facility.

After a successful pilot programme last year, carbon emissions produced during the design, manufacture, distribution and everyday use of Toshiba multi-function printers (MFPs) in the UK can now be offset through a scheme that helps villagers in Kenya reduce their own carbon footprint. Even the paper and toner that the MFPs use is offset.

The African Energy Efficient Stove project, which is run through an independent British organisation called CO2balance, supplies domestic stoves that cut the use of firewood by more than half. Each cooker typically prevents three tonnes of CO2 emissions every year – equivalent to the emissions produced by an average UK car doing 9,000 miles a year.

Four thousand Kenyan households have already switched to this energy efficient method of cooking thanks to Toshiba carbon-free MFPs — and the scheme’s success means that 30,000 stoves could be installed by the end of this year. Combined with further innovations in the products themselves it

means that carbon savings are made in both the UK and in Africa.

Installing the more efficient stoves doesn’t just benefit the environment: it also helps reduces the 1.6 million deaths each year that the World Health Association identifies as associated with smoke inhalation. In fact, the WHO states that cooking on an inefficient ‘3-stone fire’ is the equivalent of smoking 2 packets of cigarettes a day.

As environmental considerations are already built in to Toshiba’s products, the MFP Carbon zero scheme is just one part of the company’s commitment to social and environmental concerns. Toshiba MFPs already feature cutting

edge functionality that helps users reduce their environmental impact.

Nonetheless, however seriously organisations take their environmental responsibilities, some level of CO2 emissions are the inevitable consequence of the manufacture, design and use of office products. Toshiba’s carbon zero programme allows customers to offset such emissions in full, including servicing and consumables, for five years of the product’s life, or one million copies.

Steve Hewson, Marketing Director for Toshiba TEC Imaging says: “Most organisations these days would claim to care about their social or environmental impact, but even the practical ways they try to achieve their ambitions — by recycling, or encouraging employees not to print documents unnecessarily — can only go so far. PRINTING PLASTIC PARTS FROM POwDER

Using laser printers and powder to craft crucial and complex components for aeroplanes and cars could become common practice thanks to work being carried out at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

A £750,000 project, involving DMU’s world-leading Rapid Manufacturing and Prototyping Group, will develop a new machine which can produce complex plastic parts on demand.

The project, called Selective Laser Printing of High Performance Polymers (SPRINT), will explore selective laser printing (SLP), an additive manufacturing process where fine polymeric powder is printed and then fused together to make complex parts essential to industries such as the aerospace and automotive sectors.

Additive manufacturing techniques, where objects are made without a mould, are increasingly used in industry but they are unable to produce parts with properties that match those which have been made traditionally by injecting plastic into moulds.

The project, which is part funded by the Technology Strategy Board, is led by rapid manufacturing specialists MTT Technology Ltd, with other partners being Renishaw Plc and Parker KV. A previous project at DMU explored the possibilities of SLP – SPRINT promises to realise its full potential by developing a compact, energy-efficient machine along with a range of high-performance polymer materials that can be used in the process.

The SPRINT machine will precisely deposit powder using an adapted industrial laser printer before the entire layer is fused with an infrared radiant heater. The process will create less waste than other additive manufacturing techniques as it allows the powder to be laid only where it is required rather than across the entire build area.

Jason Jones, who is leading the project at DMU, said: “Selective laser printing has the potential of competing with the quality and speed of conventional manufacturing techniques without the requirement for expensive moulds.”

Although additive manufacturing was first introduced as a way of making prototype parts almost 20 years ago, the current commercial units are too slow and are unable to produce parts that can reliably withstand impacts and general wear and tear as well as moulded parts.

DMU’s Professor David Wimpenny, who originally conceived of the process, said: “The limitations of existing additive manufacturing systems prevent the most challenging and commercially rewarding applications – the production of precise complex parts using high performance polymers – from being exploited.

“The machine we are developing will produce parts with outstanding mechanical properties because every layer is fused using controlled heat and pressure. The process also has high processing speeds and excellent resolution.”

Print white and CMYK inks together with one pass fast

Users of DTG direct to product ink jet printers will have a colossal advantage over their competitors in the future with the launch of One Pass Fast. This new development will revolutionise the industry having achieved what everyone thought was impossible, to print the white and the CMYK inks during the same pass.

Before you can print a coloured t-shirt using the ink jet method you must first put down a layer of white ink, just as with screen printing. The software decides where the white ink should be and, on the first run, prints ONLY the white ink onto the shirt. It is on the second run, or pass, that the CMYK ink is laid down and the coloured image produced. With One Pass Fast these two passes are combined into one, effectively halving the print time. The latter statement could not be truer as DTG and ‘YES Ltd.’ never seem to be satisfied with their lot and are always looking for the next development that will give their customers the edge with One Pass Fast though they are not just offering them a small step forward but rather a gigantic leap in both technology and production. In effect DTG users will be able to produce up to double that of other similar printers or, to put it another way, halve the unit cost. Apart from the effect this will have on the immediate market it could also have a ripple effect on other industries because if the increased competiveness. The good news doesn’t end there either as One Pass Fast is patent pending so the technology will remain in the sole domain of DTG users.

• 4 tablespoons blackcurrant cordial (or Crème de Cassis) • 225g red fruit compote • 6 medium slices white bread with crusts cut off

method

1 Mix the first 3 ingredients and leave for 5-10 minutes. If using defrosted fruit tip in some of the juice too.

Meanwhile line a 1.2 litre pudding basin with cling film, leaving an overhang. Cut a circle of bread to fit the base, then quarter the rest 2 Drain the juices from the soaked fruit into a bowl, dip the bread in until soaked. Layer up the fruit and bread, pour over the remaining juices and cover with the overhanging cling film - weigh down with a small plate and a couple of cans. Chill in the fridge until ready to eat. Turn out and serve with single cream.

1 large ripe mango 2 large oranges – peeled 2 large bananas – peeled 250g small strawberries – hulled 1-2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon lime juice ½ cup honey 1 cup vanilla yoghurt 12 wooden skewers

METHOD

Soak skewers in cold water for 20-30 minutes. Cut mango and oranges into 3cm chunks. Cut bananas into 3cm slices. Thread fruit onto skewers, alternating the varieties, and place on

an oven tray. Combine butter, lime juice and honey in a small saucepan and stir over low heat until butter has melted and mixture is smooth. Pour mixture over fruit, turning to coat.

Cook skewers on a lightly greased grill plate (or barbecue) until warm. Cool and serve with yoghurt • Bring on your Lemon Chicken cooking instructions and favourite recipes for Blueberry Muffins or a Red Thai Curry.

CAMERA CRAZY The photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. “The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.” After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the exhaust pipe, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career”.
