Are we there yet? Holidays; this year I am definitely going to get on one. Living and printing in Brighton is a good start, not just for the sun, sea and sand, as only the middle one is guaranteed. The best bit about being beside the seaside is the holiday season when many local businesses look to make around 80% of their annual turnover. In 25 years our own shop dies a death during the summer months and we have learnt to relax about the sales figures and get everyone away for their break while we are quiet. This year it is going to be different! I have a sneaky plan to make ‘stuff’ for the shops that sell ‘stuff’ and print more for those that are busy. Yes I am going to compare the market. Simples? The seasonal market must affect all of us, people away does tend to produce less print unless we target the businesses that are busy in July and August. Try language schools, (they are overflowing from this month on), hotels and guest houses, restaurants, farm shops, in fact any sort of activity that involves spending hard earned cash. The holiday spirit is to spend money and to ignore the rat race for a bit. With more people holidaying at home in the UK, this is the year to target a piece of the action, or at least go on a recce to see what everyone else is spending their money on. There’s always next year… All good ideas on a postcard please. Peter, Local Tourist Board, Foulkes

A Flexible Finish for henderson Global Investors
henderson Global Investors has chosen a Morgana DocuMaster as the finishing solution that works best with its two Canon Imagepress 7000VPs and Canon Imagepress C1. Located on the ninth floor of one of the City of London’s most prestigious new buildings, Henderson’s print department produces a variety of brochures, reports, newsletters, fact sheets and other data for its clients worldwide. In all, the department reckons to turn out 3 million impressions a year. “First of all”, explains Print Procurement Manager Anthony Buck, “we needed bookletmaking capability
that would complement the quality of our print output, but this had to be linked to high productivity and the ability to take work from both our Imagepress 7000VPs.” Designed specifically for the digital environment, the DocuMaster satisfied Henderson’s need for ease of use, while the unit’s ‘square back’ facility provided the professional, perfect bound appearance needed for brochures and longer reports. GRANThAMS CELEBRATES BUSIEST SIGN UK ShOW TO DATE
wide format print and graphic supplies specialists Granthams confirm that this year’s Sign & Digital UK was their busiest ever and interest in their products and services hit an all-show high. With an eye-catching stand and a team of pro-active large format specialist sales and technical staff, Granthams secured orders throughout the show. Popular products included Mimaki’s new CJV30-60 Integrated Solvent Printer / Cutter and the latest Canon 6100 large format printer. This entry-level, competitively priced model seemed to appeal to many visitors. Kirsty Reader,
General Manager of Granthams says, “There was a definite trend of visitors looking for alternative ways of making money in order to survive this current climate. The price and specification of the Canon matches these requirements to a ‘t’.” The first day saw a firm sale of the Mimaki UJV-160 Flat-Bed / Roll to Roll UV system, to a local client who was happy to confirm the deal there and then. Due to Granthams solid relationship with Hybrid they were able to perform an extensive demo to their client, with the added expertise of the manufacturer’s staff as well. Kirsty continues, ”We have come away from the show with a huge amount of leads to follow up and, from looking at these and talking to visitors throughout the show, there are some interesting trends showing. Service and support enquiries have increased due to some companies not being able to afford to replace hardware at present.
Also, due to some large price increases over the last few months, there were many clients with older generation printers looking for cheaper or alternative inks. However, overall I would say that most visitors we spoke to had a great, positive attitude to what’s happening in the industry this year.” For more information on the complete range of products and services from Granthams call 01772 250207or visit us at www.graphicdiscount.co.uk. Joanna Havers joins the PCC as Director of Fundraising and Marketing The Printers’ Charitable Corporation (PCC), the printing industry’s leading charity, has appointed Joanna Havers to the newly created role of Fundraising and Marketing Director, reporting directly to the Chief Executive and Board of Trustees. She joins from Sussex Housing & Care, where she was responsible for PR, marketing and legacy fundraising. Prior to that, she worked for twelve years in
the environmental sector for The Wildlife Trusts and subsequently the RSPB, where she helped set up its regional fundraising network. Based at the charity’s West Sussex Directorate, Joanna’s appointment reflects the PCC’s drive to raise its profile and increase the number of people it supports through its grants scheme. “Although the PCC is the UK’s secondoldest occupational charity,” says Joanna, “I will be developing the first ever marketing strategy in its 182-year history. It’s an exciting and challenging role as the charity implements its ambitious plans for its long-term future.” Stephen Gilbert, the PCC’s Chief Executive, adds: “We undertook a major review of our organisational structure and Joanna Havers’ appointment was part of that process. We’re at the right place now to help people at what is a very critical time for many in the printing industry.” www.printerscharitablecorporation.co.uk

DURAWELD CELEBRATES 50 yEARS OF ‘SMART PRESENTATION’!
duraweld, one of the UK’s leading producers of customised presentation, packaging and printed stationery products, has celebrated its 50th birthday with a special event for suppliers and clients at its base in Scarborough. Over 25 guests joined the Duraweld Team for a VIP tour of the factory, where a special exhibition had been created to display products made by the company since its inception in 1959. After the tour, guests were presented with a special edition 50th Birthday Souvenir Brochure, and taken on an open top bus along the Scarborough sea front to enjoy a gourmet meal of fish and chips, followed by knickerbocker glories, at the prestigious Scarborough Spa.
how it all beGan….. Launched in 1959, Duraweld was initially run as a partnership by Mr Thackray and Mr Durak. Duraweld is a combination of their name and the high frequency welding technique they use to weld their plastic products, which in those days were predominantly plastic book covers for libraries and sleeves for telephone books. In 1970, young entrepreneur Richard Senior, who had a similar company in Essex, called Mac Plastics, met with Mr Thackray and decided to merge their companies to create Duraweld Limited. The company continued to grow through acquisition, and in 1985 a purpose built factory was constructed on Salter Road, along with a warehouse. After working on many mass market projects, which eventually disappeared
to China, Duraweld pulled away from this market and began a successful strategic move into niche sectors including fully customised products. The company now employs over 80 staff, and leads the field in the supply of innovative, great value plastic stationery products to a wide range of clients
across the UK. Key facts in the life of Duraweld ….. • In the 1960’s, Duraweld produced diary covers for Woolworths. • In 1971 Duraweld produced the official decimal coin presentation packs presented to every child in the UK.
• In 1973 Duraweld produced all the plastic wallets for the new UK folded driver’s licence. • In 1980 the company was presented with a Design Centre Award for its Regency Range of desktop products. • In 1993 the company pioneered the use of recycled vinyl in stationery. • In 2006 it won the British Association for Print and Communication Supplier of the Year award. • In 2007 it became the fi rst company, within its industry, to offer 100% recycled polypropylene made from its own manufacturing waste, and rebranded to a new magical, green image. • Also in 2007, it became the fi rst in the industry to install a digital press, offering a unique, short run service. • In 2008 Duraweld was awarded ISO 14001 accreditation for its’ environmental management. Jane Harper, Marketing Manager, Duraweld said: “50 years is a real landmark, and we are delighted to celebrate it by enjoying a trip down memory lane with our clients and suppliers, some of whom have been with us for a very long time. The secret of our longevity and success has no doubt been our ability and determination to innovate and constantly adapt to the changes in the market. This, together with our commitment to ‘smart presentation’, has stood the test of time and whilst times are currently very challenging, we are looking forward to the Duraweld name being around long into the future!” www.duraweld.co.uk

QuarkXPress 8 in the spotlight at Total Print! Expo
Quark, the original innovator in desktop publishing and one of the leading providers of dynamic publishing, has announced that it will be showcasing the latest version of its software, QuarkXPress 8, with a series of presentations at Total Print! Expo, which takes place from 20-22 October 2009. As well as demonstrating its multiaward winning page-layout and design software, Quark will be using the event at London’s Earl’s Court 2 to highlight a number of exciting new developments. As Total Print! Expo, the leading exhibition in the UK
for all sectors of the print industry, attracts the right calibre of visitors, it provides an ideal opportunity for Quark to engage with its customers. In today’s highly technological and often impersonal business world, trade shows are recognised as one of the most favourable environments to conduct business and the Quark team will be on hand to offer face-to-face advice to visitors. Several practical and interactive demonstrations will be held in the Quark Theatre, with a particular focus on QuarkXPress 8, including PDF workflows and colour management.
Other topics being covered include extending existing page layout skills for print, to design for web and Flash as well as the impact of the fast growing area of dynamic publishing. After a two year absence from Total Print! Expo, Gavin Drake, Quark marketing director, explained why Quark is making a return to the 2009 event. “As 2009 is already shaping up to be a tough economic year for many in the industry, it is essential that businesses not only look to the most cost effective and efficient working practices but also keep up to date with the latest technology to give them that all-
ROLAND DG UPBEAT FOLLOWING SIGN & DIGITAL UK 2009 Roland DG has reported that its 30” UV-curable integrated printer/cutter, the VersaUV LEC-300, was the main attraction at Sign & Digital UK 2009, while its engraving solutions also drew plenty of interest. The VersaUV is the first UV-curable inkjet printer in the world to integrate printing and cutting functions and many visitors to the show had come to see for themselves examples of the machine’s tactile output such as Braille, faux animal skin and leather. The company received a healthy number of leads across its product range and it welcomed the opportunity to highlight the versatility of wide format inkjet technology at the show. The company’s stand had over seventy different applications on display, including window graphics, personalised musical
instruments, garments and even a vinyl wrapped snow board. Between the Roland DG stand and those of its distributors, every Roland DG printing, print and cut and engraving machine was available to buy at the show. Following the show, Roland DG (UK)’s Head of Product Development, Brett Newman said: “In my view, the market has maintained some of its buoyancy, despite the recession, because businesses in this sector are combating the downturn by diversifying their service portfolio in order to keep their output high. This is highlighted by the interest in engraving this year engraving is a high value service, yet the technology required is available at a relatively low capital cost. The live engraving demonstrations were very popular and I think many came away
with the realisation that the machinery is easy to use - with many skills transferrable from wide format printing and cutting — and will start making them money almost instantly. “I feel that those who did venture out were serious about investigating investment opportunities. In general, visitors spent longer than usual on the stand discussing the products with our technical team, which I think is a reflection of how carefully new capital investments are being considered at the moment. Even so, it’s still difficult not to get carried away when you consider that some of our printers will pay for themselves in a matter of months when used for just four hours a day.” Beyond printing and engraving, Roland DG also had value-adding personalisation solutions on display
important competitive edge, vital in the design and print industry. QuarkXPress 8 is proven to be almost 3 times faster than previous versions of QuarkXPress in regards to everyday user tasks and that’s something we’ll demonstrate during the free theatre sessions.” “Exhibitions are an excellent opportunity to provide face-to-face contact with customers and Total Print! Expo is a great way for us to discuss the industry’s constantly evolving needs with the very people who use our solutions. By listening to customer feedback we can help bring even greater efficiencies to their operations, vital in today’s tough economy. We’re very excited about the Quark Theatre and we’ll be publishing the full schedule on both Quark’s and Total Print! Expo’s websites, so watch this space!”, concluded Gavin. Richard Gayle, Event Director at Total Print! Expo, added: ”We’re delighted that Quark is back for this year’s show, its return to the event really highlights that companies are recognising the importance and value of exhibitions. Events like this bring tangible business results as well as offering real networking opportunities due to the personal interaction with a receptive audience that simply isn’t found anywhere else.” For further information about Total Print! Expo please visit www.totalprintexpo.com
such as Xpres’s Gem Tec system for rhinestone personalisation of garments and Eurodrop’s multi-colour doming process for both fabric and printed items. Concluded Mr Newman: “Considering the challenges that the market and the economy as a whole is facing Sign & Digital UK 2009 has to be classed as a success for Roland DG and its distributors. We were there to showcase the moneymaking opportunities presented by our products and all our dealers reported sales over the three days. The show provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to customers, both old and new, the versatility and sheer range of profitable applications that our machinery is capable of”. www.rolanddg.com

Xerox scientists invent tiny device that produces big colour
Microscopic nozzles – half the width of a human hair – are the building blocks behind a new product unveiled by Xerox that is set to change the face of colour printing forever. The new Xerox ColorQube™ 9200 Series multifunction printer vaults Xerox’s proven solid ink technology to the centre of a highly competitive market. At the heart of ColorQube is a print head that increases ink flow 400 percent by packing in 880 nozzles – at twice the number per linear inch compared to prior print heads. Development of the miniscule nozzles (each only 37.5 microns wide) is considered a major achievement because they deliver higher flow rates despite their reduced size, says Steve Korol, a Xerox researcher who worked with his research and development team to engineer the print head. Each print head is about the size of a deck of cards and funnels molten solid ink through a complex network of channels to the nozzles, enabling colour printing at 85 pages per minute. The design features four print heads per printer totaling more than 3,500 ink nozzles. “This device opens up a huge market for Xerox,” said Don Titterington, vice president, print head and ink research and development at Xerox. “At 150 million drops per second, this is a breakthrough in how fast we can put ink on the page. That’s as many ink drops in a minute as there are people on the planet.”
Perfect combination of colour and affordability The innovation inside the new device, combined with a new pricing structure and the benefits of solid ink, enable Xerox to offer the world’s first solid ink highspeed printer that reduces colour page costs by up to
62 percent. The ink, solid at room temperature in the form of an ink stick, is melted inside the printer and loaded into the print head in liquid form. This simple, highly reliable process does not use cartridges to hold the ink, reducing supplies waste by 90 percent compared to competitive laser-based products, and delivering much sought after environmental benefits. In addition, scientists developed numerous material and chemical innovations to the print head design resulting in a stainless steel industrial-strength print head that can last the life of the machine. “The combination of the environmental benefits of solid ink, the new print head design and the sensors and algorithms that were developed create the ideal affordable office colour printer,” said Titterington. The ColorQube also features: • Sophisticated sensors and image processing algorithms to calibrate the image before it is printed. • A product lifecycle that requires 9 percent less
Matthews the Printers blossoms with new brand
Matthews celebrate 25 years in business with a fresh new look. The eye-catching new Matthews logo, designed by creative agency Arclight East, features a vibrant Bird-of-Paradise flower matched with a muted grey for the name and strap-line — “Passionate About Print.” Matthews new identity features strongly across all of their promotional literature, which comprises of a new brochure featuring case studies from a variety of clients, and a fresh edition of Matthews’ popular print handbook, a concise pocket guide for print buyers. The re-brand is the latest in a series of positive developments for Matthews, which is actively entering new markets, whilst capitalising on Matthews-POD, a web-to-print tool, to offer enhanced services to clients. Clients include many prominent brands in the food, drink, leisure, retail, automotive and publishing industries. A significant capital investment programme at Matthews in 2008 saw the installation of two new Komori presses, including a ten-colour perfector, five colour press as well as investment in its studio with a Kodak Magnus 400 Computer to Plate solution. Chief Executive, Dennis Ott, explains “with over 25 years experience of producing high quality promotional print, we have continually embraced new technologies and methods with the focus always being to continue to deliver a premium service to our customers. With a new management team in place and celebrating a quarter of a century of business, we felt that it was time to refresh our image and bring the same creativity and colour to our own brand that we do to our clients.” Email: gemma@matthews-printers.co.uk or call 020 8498 5217 energy and produces 10 percent fewer greenhouse gases than comparable laser equipment. • A patented vacuum system, only 17 thousandths of an inch wide that removes tiny paper dust particles from the printing zone, lengthening the life of the print head. • An Intelligent Ready system uses a patented learning technology to activate a power-saving mode based on the users’ schedules. For example, after monitoring work patterns for a couple of weeks, the device will detect if there is a low level of use during the lunch hour and will automatically enter power-saving mode, resuming full-power operation as employees begin work activity. Order taking for the ColorQube 9200 series begins in Europe in September 2009. www.xerox.co.uk

Alwan Color Expertise presents Print Standardiser
Print Standardiser, the graphic industry’s first automated press quality control and ISO 12647 standardisation solution is jointly developed with X-Rite, leader in colour measurement
and communication technologies. Developed to address the graphic industry’s growing need for standards compliance, it provides an affordable and easy to implement ‘out-of-the-box’ ISO 12647 standardisation solution for analogue and digital presses. Elie Khoury, President Alwan Color Expertise comments: “With Alwan Print Standardiser jointly developed with X-Rite, we bring the first automated quality control and total ISO 12647 compliancy to print production. It is an automated and stand alone tool that will remove many of the costs and implementation barriers publishing and printing professionals typically encounter during the ISO
12647 implementation process. Most importantly it offers a full returnon-investment in a record period of maximum six months in most cases.” Print Standardiser establishes a new class of standardisation in the graphic arts industry. The intuitive software wizard and interface allow users of any skill level to set their target printing conditions and achieve instantaneous compliance with ISO 12647 requirements. With Print Standardiser, users can match any ISO standard printing condition including Fogra 39 and GRACoL™ on each and every job thanks to the software’s unique automated press tracking and Dynamic PressCalibration™ system
which requires no human intervention to calibrate the press. This solution allows printers to reduce make-ready time, match clients’ standard proofs, and dramatically cut waste paper and ink consumption, hence increasing overall pressroom productivity and profitability by an average 15%. An additional major benefit of Print Standardiser is that it qualifies the controlled press to ISO 12647 certification. It also delivers print reports proving ISO 12647 compliance for each and every job. Print Standardiser is available from Alwan and X-Rite approved channel partners. www.alwancolor.com for info.
development. Nothing stands still and whilst the existing imagePROGRAF printers were the best in class for a considerable time, we are delighted to introduce the next generation of our product portfolio. We looked into what
was important to our customers and have made significant improvements in areas such as productivity, usability and quality to ensure Canon stays ahead in the CAD and GIS large format printer markets.” www.canon.co.uk
Canon launches new ImagePROGRAF range Canon, has announced the launch of the 24” Canon imagePROGRAF iPF650 and iPF655 and the 36” Canon imagePROGRAF iPF750 and iPF755 Large Format Printers (LFPs) for the Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Geographic Information System (GIS) markets. The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF650 and iPF655 boast some of the fastest speeds in their class with an A1 output in just 30 seconds. Similarly the larger Canon imagePROGRAF iPF750 and iPF755 can produce A0 sheets in just 48 seconds. Major advances in productivity, quality and usability have been achieved whilst reducing the total cost of ownership and increasing customers’ return on investment. Canon’s unique features are standard on all four new models and provide time and cost savings – “Hot Swap” ink tanks enable operators to change inks on the fly, while borderless printing reduces finishing time. These features can also be combined with an independent cutter for faster, more accurate cutting and a Gigabit Ethernet connection to accelerate file transfers. The new range also maintain top-line accuracy and quality, with all devices capable of producing minimum line widths as low as 0.02mm and accuracy of +/- 0.1%2, combined with Canon’s five colour reactive inks and a new magenta for a wider red colour gamut. Understanding the importance of tracking and managing costs, Canon
has designed new accounting software to track the cost per print to help manage expenditure whilst Canon’s eMaintenance software tool (as used on Canon Office and Professional products) helps customers monitor machine performance, track the lifetime of parts and order consumables. Canon has also improved its intuitive operator panel with operator friendly features, as well as adding features to store media settings, detect media mismatches (on the iPF655 & iPF755) and a print timer to track the length of time each print takes. As part of a new stylish compact design, a simple front-loading and delivery system can automatically stack up to 20 A1 or A0 prints for effective use even in the smallest office environments. Equipped with an 80Gb built-in hard drive (iPF655 & iPF755), and an economy mode to save on printing costs, the new products also come with HP-GL/2 compatibility, including palette and pen settings. This allows integration within existing CAD and GIS environments, as well as being compatible with the leading CAD software and systems to ensure a smooth replacement of older machines. Shane Burchett, LFP Product Professional, Canon UK says: “Canon invests more than 9% of its annual revenue back into research and

Colortrac’s new SmartLF Gx+ wide format scanners The SmartLF Gx+ 56 extra-wide format scanner (the first scanners in the all-new SmartLF Gx+ large format scanner range), has been joined by two new models. The Gx+ scanner models complete the launch of Colortrac’s 18 model, full high definition (HD), CCD scanner product line up. The SmartLF Gx+ 28 and Gx+ 42 are the first CCD-based wide format scanners with true 1200dpi optical resolution. The combination of high resolution and CCD imaging technology creates a flexible, multi-purpose scanning system capable of capturing both very fine line and image details while reproducing colour graphics in vivid, high fidelity colours. As with their 56” big brother, these 28” and 42” wide format scanners benefit from Colortrac’s technically advanced, instant-on, 2D LED illumination system and ENERGY STAR® compliance to reduce energy requirements and environmental impact. With a 50,000hr in-service life, using LED technology greatly reduces
maintenance and consumable costs providing much lower cost of operation compared to fluorescent tube based systems. Connection is via high speed plug and play USB2 or networked Gigabit ethernet. New lamination products boost pfs show profile Clients who visited PFS stand at this year’s Sign & Digital show found an array of brand new products, from high end, high production to entry level value range. The range was pitched to reflect the needs of the market today and it certainly proved successful as they recorded high levels of leads from the first day. Mark Dale, PFS Director explains, “The interest we have had was on a more serious level than at any other show. Historically attendees are a real mixture of browsers, staff day trips and keen buyers whereas this year it seems that the attendees were the real decision makers and keen buyers – who can complain!” Their first sale of the show was indeed one of the new products launched; the Typhoon 1400 Plus. It is a pressure sensitive laminator that gives complete flexibility to mount and laminate with quality results. The Typhoon 1400 Plus features new automatic feed and take up for your prints, a maximum width of 1380mm and thickness of up to 23mm, infrared hot roller system, speeds of up to 5m per minute and backed by the PFS 12 month warranty. The most popular models seemed to be the new PFS range that includes the Typhoon, the Cyclone and Breeze models. Dale says, “Visitors who were looking to upgrade from old equipment were definitely just looking at price, which is where this range fits. They were also keen to trade-in older machines. However we did see many visitors who were completely new to this industry, overall a good mix of prospects.” He continues, ”We had been looking for an entry level high quality but low price product for this market and we feel we have hit the nail on the head with the Breeze. Enquiries for this have been flying off the stand and just prove that with 10 years in the industry we can read the market quite accurately.” For more information on any of the products and services available from PFS (Print Finishing Solutions) visit the new website www.pfsltd.net, call 01942 322953.

The Gx+ 28” scanners have a smaller footprint and lighter weight making them ideal for mobile applications and scanning or copying over-size A1 documents in AEC and graphics design applications. The larger Gx+ 42” scanners offer the greater flexibility required by professional service providers and B2B bureaux who need capability to process a wide range of customer originals and content. The Colortrac SmartLF Gx+ 28m scanner has an MSRP of £4,495 rising to £6,245 for the Gx+ T28e model and the SmartLF Gx+ 42m £5,745 to £7,995 for the Gx+ T42e. Bytes expands template creation tools in Infigo Web2Print bytes Document Solutions, specialists in workflow and digital print solutions, has enhanced the tools that enable printers to create document templates for use with its market leading Infigo Web2print system. The new Infigo GO VI tools deliver all the components necessary for a printer to create document templates for a new customer in the fastest possible time. The menu driven system takes the printer step-by-step through the set up of a template. It allows dynamic control of a document including the formatting of images, text and colours. A printer can also incorporate a wide range of variable data fields so the end customer can personalise documents such as business cards, marketing collateral, greetings cards, invitations, calendars, etc. Douglas Gibson, Infigo Product Manager at Bytes Document Solutions says, “Infigo empowers printers with a wide range of easy to use tools to create their own templates. They don’t need to be a graphic designer or a web programmer to use the system. Some web-to-print systems on the market rely on the printer returning to the software provider for the set up of templates. With Infigo GO VI, the printer has full capability and flexibility to create new templates when they want and as often as they want.” The new Infigo GO VI tool is compatible with Apple Mac OS 10.4, Leopard and Tiger, Microsoft Windows XP and Vista plus Adobe Acrobat 8 and 9. Infigo GO VI is sold as part of the Infigo Web2print Hosted Package. Features of the Infigo GO VI include: • Complete Adobe pdf-based workfl ow. Infi go GO VI is an Adobe plug in, so it can manage multiple file formats and convert them to a .pdf file. • All elements of a template are stored within the pdf fi le - so no need to upload separate files. • Printers can create both the template and the associated website form in a single package – this means the complete process of creating and uploading a form can be managed through Infigo GO VI. • The powerful text conversion tool enables a printer to quickly create new templates for customers – the printer can select existing text from a pdf and Infigo will convert it into a fully editable field. • Advanced copy fi tting features automatically adjust the size of a font to fi t the length of the assigned text box. • The Java Script editing tool gives step by step guidance so that a printer can carry out complex tasks that would normally require the skills of a software programmer. • The artworking features in Infi go GO VI allows the printer to set up easily highly complex templates. For example, a business card template can be set up with all required fields but if an individual does not require a mobile number or a fax, the template will automatically artwork the file to comply with predefined design rules. Traditionally, this would require a separate script to be written but now it has an easy to use interface that allows the printer to set up the instructions. • Full control over images ensures a printer can set up pictures to fi t to a box – this then allows the end user to crop their own images when they upload an image to the site. • It provides full colour support for Pantone cmyk and RGB • Printer can input native Photoshop fi les into the system • Text on Curve provides an instant preview of how edits look in the correct place. Allows users to fit text to different shapes e.g. a cup or plate. Infigo web2print delivers a powerful “retail-ready” web front-end and gives commercial printers an overnight online presence. When a printer buys Infigo they also benefit from the whole Bytes infrastructure with its full UK-wide support supplemented by the Bytes Training Academy. Bytes works with its customers to ensure Infigo delivers value to their business and can demonstrate a true return on their investment. www.bytes.co.uk

Don’t stop advertising: it’s yo u Marketing, more specifically, advertising, is all about knowing what your customers want, tailoring your offering around that need and communicating the benefits you can offer them. If you stop telling customers why they should buy from you they will simply stop buying — they’ll even forget about you.
d
espite this, the knee-jerk reaction of companies is cut advertising, despite the evidence that if anything, now is the time to keep advertising. “It is well documented that brands that increase advertising during a recession, when competitors are cutting back, can improve market share and return on investment at lower cost than during good economic times.” So says the Harvard Business School. And according to The Strategic Planning Institute of Cambridge, a recessionary market can provide an opportunity for businesses to build a greater share of market through aggressive advertising without reducing short term profitability. Those businesses that reduce media spend suffer a loss of market share. Why is this? The explanation is broadly based on what is called ’share of voice’ (the percentage one company has of the total amount of advertising directed to a targeted group). In a recession, some companies reduce their advertising spend, which allows those companies that maintain or increase their spend to
steal market share from them. This has been borne out by a number of studies over the past 85 years in the US. In 1923 a study of 200 companies found that the biggest sales increase were found by those companies who advertised the most (Roland Vaile). In 1947 a study found that companies cutting advertising spend lost market share and continued to lag behind their competitors even after the recession (Buschen Advertising). More recently, in 2002, a study of 3500 US companies found that those who maintain or increase their marketing see share increase twice as big as those as those cutting marketing (PIMS). Success in a recession is not just about being ‘brave’ and continuing to advertise but it also requires that at least some of your competitors are cutting back. Also remember that advertising often becomes cheaper due to reduced demand. So small businesses shouldn’t assume that customers stop spending during a recession, they just tend to buy differently. Businesses need to adapt their marketing strategy to suit the
current economic climate. There are many managers slashing ad budgets during this recession who will live to regret it when trade picks up. Yet it is equally true that marketing spend needs to be looked at more toughly during a trade turndown. So what should you do to make your money work harder? 1. Set objectives more clearly. Whether you are a one product or multiproduct company, you need to be clear what you are trying to achieve with your marketing budget. You need to know precisely which markets you are targeting, which products you aim to sell in them and what your marketing message for those markets is. This planning process helps focus attention on the true opportunities that exist even in a recession. 2. Measure response. You need to measure the response from advertising to know whether it’s providing value for money. 3. Review your existing operations. Make sure you’ve got procedures in place so that sales enquiries are
properly followed through. Many companies waste a proportion of their enquiries because staff are not geared up to handle them effectively. 4. Use your existing customers as a marketing tool. One of the truths in sales is that people who are most likely to buy from you are existing satisfied customers. You should make sure you regularly review who has bought what — and whether they are likely targets for new or extra products. 5. If cost is an issue, reduce the size of each advert. In a recession, the frequency of your advert could be more important than its size or length when it appears — especially if the ad is response orientated. 6. Use more direct marketing. These include mail shots, telesales and direct response advertisements — often with coupons and freephone numbers. The benefits that made your product good before will still apply in a recession, except that buyers will be looking at the price tag more critically. 7. Select media more carefully. Where

banks
If you just want spin-free information you can go to a commercial library. Better is your local Business Link (www. businesslink.gov.uk). Remember, there is great temptation to slash advertising budgets in recessionary times. That can prove fatal in the long-run. Much better to make your advertising pounds work harder.
Despite what is being said by the pundits, the banks are still lending. However, the present situation has made them more cautious with the limited funds they have. Gone are the days where a round of golf with your bank manager led to your loan request being granted. Now banks have strict hierarchical structures for dealing with loan applications. As one manager from HSBC put it, “for loans up to £30000 all I can do is enter the required information into the system which then determines whether a loan is granted. For higher amounts, the application is referred up the chain for a decision based on a manager’s judgment. But which ever route the application takes, the bank will be looking to ability to repay.” To get any decision at all requires information from you. You need to disclose the purpose of the loan — this determines which package you apply for (car loans are a lower interest rate product than an overdraft for example); you need a solid business plan with cashflow forecasts; copies of your personal and business bank accounts; details on other loans you or your business might have; any potential bad debts; and where you are in the trading cycle (summer lulls or spring ‘boom’). The better the information, the greater the chance of a successful application. There’s no point in detailing here the offerings from the banks, it’ll be out of date before it’s printed. However, comparison websites such as Moneyfacts (http://moneyfacts. co.uk/business/default.aspx) and MoneySupermarket (http:// www.moneysupermarket.com/ businessfinance/) will help you decide which banks, other than your own, you might wish to approach.

Adam Bernstein In these difficult times many will be wondering what they can do to keep their business going until the economy bounces back. Invariably survival is down to having enough cold hard cash and with the banks seeming to hoard all of the billions that we, as taxpayers,
The next thing to consider, assuming you serve businesses who pay on invoice rather than consumers who pay on demand, is invoice factoring and invoice discounting. Invoice factoring differs from invoice discounting in that with factoring, the business (you) sells its sales ledger at

you do continue newspaper and magazine advertising? It pays to take a hard look at the publications you use. Ask yourself whether they really reach the people who are most likely to buy in these tougher times. Check the title, it is a good clue to the targeted audience, 6600 print shops receive Copy Shop News, each month. 8. Increase point-of-sale advertising. When people are spending less you need to make sure you get your message in just before they part with their dwindling pounds. That means having your message at the point-ofsale. So where appropriate, invest in sales dispensers counter racks and all other in-store paraphernalia that can help push your product.

a discount to a third party in exchange for being paid up front, albeit less the discount taken by the factor. With invoice discounting, the business borrows against its sales ledger which is then used as collateral. The end result is the same it’s just the arrangement and legal status of the sales ledger that differ. Although faster cash is the ‘pro’ here, the ‘con’ is that some might consider that businesses that use these methods are in financial distress and might be reluctant to make supplies. Further, invoice discounting can be expensive compared to an overdraft or loan; factoring, on the other hand, could be more competitive since there are a number of firms who offer the service. Invoice discounting or factoring tends to be available to businesses with a turnover of £500000 who have a track record.
business links and GovernMent help Often overlooked is the Government backed Business Link network. Regionally based, this agency covers England, but there are sister organisations for the rest of the UK — Enterprise Wales, Invest NI and Highland and Islands Enterprise / Business Gateway for Scotland. It’s these networks that the Government, specifically Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, uses to disseminate information and help. Just a quick look at the main website — www.businesslink.gov.uk — will show you that there is a wealth of information on training, grants, loans and other help available, you just need to invest time in searching for the help that suits your needs. It’s also through a portal — ‘Real help for businesses now’ (http://www. businesslink.gov.uk/realhelp/finance) — that businesses can directly get their hands on the credit crunch beating help that the Government announced earlier this year including: • The Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme to guarantee bank lending. • A Capital for Enterprise Fund to invest in small businesses which need equity. • A Working Capital Scheme that secures short term bank lending to companies with a turnover of up to £500m. It’s the Enterprise Finance Guarantee

Scheme which will probably be of greatest interest here because it guarantees lending to viable credit worthy small firms with an annual turnover of up to £25m, which are looking for loans of up to £1m for a period of up to 10 years. The guaranteed loans will be available through Barclays, Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank, HBOS, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, RBS/Natwest and Northern Bank. Other banks may join the scheme later. As the loans as guaranteed by the Government to the banks, for a fee, any loan application that succeeds will probably have a slightly higher cost, it’s worth noting that ECF loans can be used to convert an overdraft into a loan. But there are other Government backed programmes that may be worth investigating and the Business Link website will point you in the right direction for all of these. Not only can the site indicate what is out there, but it offers a searchable directory of specific grants and programmes. Look at http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/ bdotg/action/gsd?r.l1=1073858790&r. lc=en&r.l2=1073866776&r.s=tl, choose Method 1, choose the type of support you want and then enter your location. As an example, in Oxfordshire, if you want information on becoming more energy efficient, investing in new plant or equipment, consultancy or business advice, finding new markets or customers or learning from other businesses you’ll find some 36 grants, 12 awards, 16 loans and private equity and 82 forms of consultancy including: Grant for Business Investment — South East: Grant for Business Investment is designed for businesses that are looking at the possibility of investing in a deprived area, but need financial help to go ahead. Typically, a grant is offered to support the acquisition of key assets, such as buildings, plant and machinery and to support the creation of new jobs or to safeguard existing ones. Successful applicants typically receive around 1015 per cent of a project’s total eligible capital expenditure Octopus Private Equity: The scheme provides equity finance to businesses to support buy-outs, accelerate growth, or make strategic acquisitions. Applications for sums between £2m and £8m. Adventure Capital Fund: Business Development Fund: The scheme provides a grant to help develop an organisation’s skills and capacity. It will also help a business to become less reliant on grant funding and begin to grow. The maximum amount is
£15,000. Envirowise: This offers confidential advice and support on environmental issues. This assistance enables companies to increase profitability and reduce environmental impact.
Consider Sale and Leaseback Do you have assets that you could sell? If so, consider sale and leaseback. Here the business sells the asset to a third party, receives the cash value, and then retains the use of the asset in exchange for paying a rent. Land and property — your premises for example — are most widely covered by these arrangements, but any capital item that can be rented for a decent length of time could be the subject of a sale and leaseback. There are tax consequences of sale and leaseback so good accounting advice is necessary. A number of firms offer this service. Google using “Sale and leaseback”.
HMRC Don’t forget the Business Payment Support Service that HMRC are offering to all businesses who have a cashflow problem and who may have difficulty paying their taxes. The BPSS covers any tax that is owed to HMRC; that applications to delay payment must be made in advance of the tax falling due; and that the arrangement to pay must be reasonable. If granted, and a large number are, on the spot, you’ll not incur any black marks or penalties, only very low rates of interest. HMRC have said that they “will look to be flexible and agree Time to Pay arrangements on a case-by-case basis to bring the business’s/client’s tax back up-to-date on a timescale that is reasonable and appropriate to the situation.” See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pbr2008/ business-payment.htm.
According to a spokesman from the Ombudsman’s office, “the service resolves the majority of the disputes referred to it informally, without the need for an ombudsman’s decision. However, if either party is unhappy the complaint can be referred to an ombudsman for a final decision.” Complaints taken to the service include disagreements over terms and conditions, whether the terms and conditions are considered to be clear, if the firm is applying the terms in the contract fairly and if important terms were brought to buying company’s attention at point of sale. Beating the Credit Crunch? It takes more than perspiration, you need information! Businesses are spending £millions paying for information and advice which they can get free from Business.gov. uk or from Business Link Advisers, according to Research* carried out on behalf of BERR into small businesses and their attitudes to advice. The majority (96%) of small business leaders surveyed said the best piece of business advice they had received had been free. Popular sources of free advice were friends, colleagues and family. Business Link Adviser, Jonathan Love explains, “As businesses become ever more cost conscious, it’s important that they take up the free help and advice available from Business Link. Money saved by using our free online tools, online factsheets compiled by professional experts and by having a business review ‘Health Check’ can be re-invested in the company.” For example, free advice on fighting the recession is available at www. businesslink.gov.uk/realhelp Business Link was set up to encourage business owners to seek advice. It promotes the market
Problems with the bank? Finally, if you do have a problem with a bank that you have borrowed from, and you are a business with a turnover under £1 million (2 million Euros from November 2009), you may well be able to seek redress through the Financial Ombudsman Service, www.financialombudsman.org.uk. The ombudsman service is similar to a court of law — but not as formal. The ombudsman service listens to both sides and it aims to settle disputes fairly — it is also free for complainants. The ombudsman can require a financial firm to pay up to £100,000 to settle a dispute.

for business support by referring companies to the broadest range of voluntary, public and private sector business support services. Business Link’s knowledge of the business support market is unique. Its advisers are experienced in selecting and suggesting the right business solutions based on a company’s current and future needs and issues. The referral service saves business owners time and money by fast tracking their route to help. Business Link offers objective customer focussed advice, often through a comprehensive Business Review, also known as a ‘Health Check’. One company which saved money by using Business Link is Harmony Carpets, Brighton. Mark Yelland, explains, “I’m a great believer in taking up free advice where it is available. My Business Link Adviser has given me some great advice about managing cash flow and using a customer relationship management system more effectively. I’m also getting more information and forecasting done with our accountant.” Business Link’s information and advice services are available through the website www.businesslink.gov. uk or by using your landline to phone 0845 600 9 006, you will be directed automatically to the Business Link nearest to you.. Business Link is the government funded national business information, advice and support service. Business Link helps businesses and entrepreneurs to establish new enterprises and grow established companies. This is done by ensuring that business owners and senior managers can quickly and easily locate and benefit from the broadest range of public, private and voluntary business support services. * Survey was conducted by YouGov and made up of 1086 companies with 1-49 employees, Mar 2009.

DURAWELD LAUNCh FREE RING BINDER RECyCLING SERVICE
duraweld, one of the UK’s leading producers of customised presentation, packaging and printed stationery products, has launched a FREE ring binder recycling service as part of its continued drive to offer a comprehensive range of environmentally friendly products and services. The company is inviting anyone to send them their used plastic ring binders to recycle, regardless of where they were purchased. Duraweld will then dismantle them, and, as a specialist manufacturer, is then able to access recycling facilities for each element of the binders, down to the last rivet! Jane Harper, Marketing Manager, Duraweld said: “Recycling makes good environmental and economic sense, and by using this free service we can ensure that nothing goes to waste when your old binders are not needed anymore. We have already run a pilot scheme in our local area for the service, which has proved a great success.” This recycling scheme is just one of a number of green initiatives launched by Duraweld. The company pioneered the use of recycled vinyl in stationery in 1993. In 2007 it
became the first company, within their industry, to offer 100% recycled polypropylene made from their own manufacturing waste, and in 2008 became the first company to offer 100% recycled white polypropylene. Duraweld also recently announced that it had been awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation, which measures a company’s performance against a series of international standards on environmental management. Based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, over the last five decades, Duraweld has constantly invested in new technology and staff development, building a reputation for first class production quality, the highest environmental standards, constant innovation and excellent customer service. Its product range includes folders, portfolios, ring binders, dividers, organisers, boxes, conference packs, wallets, badge holders and multimedia packaging. For further details about Duraweld’s green range, contact 01723 584091 or email info@ duraweld.co.uk. PAPER FROM WALES RECEIVES ROyAL RECOGNITION
upM Shotton has been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen as one of the UK’s most sustainable businesses with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category. The North Wales paper mill, which produces newsprint entirely from recycled old newspapers and magazines and generates its own electricity and steam from paper making residues, was praised for having achieved the highest standards of sustainability throughout its business operations. UPM Shotton was granted the award as recognition for outstanding performance in environmental sustainability and its positive impact on the local community. Mr David Ingham, General Manager for UPM Shotton, said: “The Queen’s Award is the UK’s most prestigious award for business performance. Everyone at UPM Shotton is thrilled that we have been recognised as a front-runner in sustainability and an example of how a business can create true value when we take care of our people, our environment and our community.”
GREENER ChEAPER COLOUR XeroX Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today launched the world’s first high-speed solid ink multifunction printer, which cuts the cost of colour pages by up to 62 percent compared to traditional colour lasers — without compromising print quality. The Xerox ColorQube™ 9200 Series multifunction printer uses Xerox’s proprietary solid ink technology to lower the environmental impact of office printing. The cartridge-free design generates 90 percent less supplies waste and reduces the effects of manufacturing and transportation on the environment. A study reviewed by the Rochester Institute of Technology estimated that the ColorQube series uses nine per cent less lifecycle energy and produces 10 per cent fewer greenhouse gases than a comparable laser device. The multifunction system prints, scans and copies all in one device with advanced technology that simplifies use and maintenance. The crayon-like ink sticks are non-toxic and easy to load. The ColorQube 9200 Series is offered with Xerox’s new Hybrid Colour
pricing plans that significantly reduce colour page costs. The plans eliminate traditional “one-size-fits-all” pricing, where the cost of a page with full colour, like printing a photo image, is the same as the cost of a page with just a little bit of colour, such as a company logo on letterhead. With the ColorQube’s Hybrid Colour Plans, customers pay only for the amount of color they use on a given page. Order taking for the ColorQube 9200 series begins in September 2009. At the company’s newly launched Web site, www.FinallyColorIsLess. com, users compare their current cost of colour printing to what they would pay using ColorQube.

Green energy provides electricity for Kostrzyn
Arctic Paper, one of Europe’s leading companies in the manufacture and sales of fine paper, has announced a new green energy project for its Kostrzyn mill in Poland, which will maximise production of electrical energy. From 1 July 2009 the company’s entire heat and electricity requirements will be met by the company’s own natural gas plant. Any excess electricity
that is produced will be sold externally. This latest initiative follows the mill’s switch of its energy source from coal to natural gas in 2006/7, a move which made production at the mill cheaper and more environmentally friendly. For Arctic Paper, which has invested a total of SEK350m in the plant, the environmental benefits provided by natural gas are essential. The use of natural gas halves emissions of carbon
dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions are also reduced by 40% compared with coal-fired plants. In principle, emissions from natural gas do not contain heavy metals, hydrocarbons or dust. “We are extremely pleased with the new energy solution for the mill. We have a 20-year contract with the stateowned PGNiG, which gives us a much more stable price for the future,” says
Bjarne Bjork, COO at Arctic Paper. Arctic Paper Kostrzyn S.A. is the largest manufacturer of offset papers in Poland and the second largest manufacturer of graphical papers. The mill has achieved a strong position in the Polish market. At present, 70% of its total sales are exported to countries such as Germany, UK, France and Italy. Océ UK raises sustainability awareness and donates money to Essex Wildlife Trust Océ UK Ltd, has run a ‘Go Green’ campaign to help raise the environment awareness of all Océ employees including staff based at the head office in Brentwood. The company held a range of activities including a special ‘Green’ menu in the staff bistro, video ‘sound bites’ by employees on what they think of the environment and daily newsletters providing environmental information and facts. Océ also held a ‘Go Green Day’ where employees could dress in green or in clothing from a sustainable source. In return they made a donation to the Essex Wildlife Trust, which the company matched. Bron Curley, Managing Director of Océ UK, said: “I am delighted that so many Océ employees embraced our ‘Go Green Day’ and I’m pleased that together we raised £255 for the Essex Wildlife Trust. The company has matched the staff contributions pound for pound, so in total we have donated £510 to this worthy cause. Charities like this depend on membership
subscriptions, donations and legacies to fund the majority of their work, so I’m happy we can help them continue their conservation work for both the wildlife and people of Essex.” Lynne Meacock, Deputy Director of Essex Wildlife Trust said: “This is a wonderful effort from all the staff at Océ and we are grateful to the company for matching their contributions. It is tempting in times of financial constraint to push the environment back down the priority list but Essex Wildlife Trust needs to be supporting our wildlife both now and in the future. We also know that green open spaces are vital to our well being and that free access to our sites means that all the people of Essex have a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of Essex, especially at this lovely time of year. We congratulate Océ on their commitment to sustainable living and hope that they can provide a beacon for other companies in the county to follow.” Sustainability Week helped to emphasise Océ’s strong commitment to sustainable business. Recent initiatives
include putting recycling bins in the offices and encouraging staff to switch off the lights in rooms they are not using. This also falls in line with the recent ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification received by the Océ Head Office in Brentwood, together with several other offices and Océ Business Services customer operations across the country.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management is the principal international standard for environmental management systems and a tool designed to increase resource efficiency, catalogue and minimise waste, reduce environmental impacts and assure compliance with legislation leading towards continual improvement with environmental performance. www.oce.com

CSMA LEASING
It’s no good moaning after the event; if your latest investment is supplied through a sales aid MPR lease you will never have title to the equipment and only your original supplier will be able to offer a trade in value to reduce your settlement figure. You knew this, didn’t you?
CSMA Finance versus Supplier Leasing I
t is all very well for our suppliers to want to secure their customer base but is it restrictive practice when the customer wants to upgrade and finds there is no value in the original kit as it is tied to the supplier? When we want to upgrade to another manufacturer to secure better running costs or new machine features the sums are not stacked in the print shop owners favour. You may even be staying with the same badge but want to change supplier for either better service or pricing on the proposed new equipment. Why is it that even if you were swapping one Canon dealer for another, that only the original supplier can offer a trade in? All other bidders for your business will have to quote to settle all of your outstanding rentals and add this figure onto the price of the new kit. No wonder the leasing companies are fed up being asked to finance so much ‘thin air’. This really does effect underwriting decisions. We would not put up with this when ‘buying’ a car. Can you imagine only being able to trade in with the original supplier, especially if present service was a factor? We are so far away from being in the driving seat when we negotiate as historically money lenders are so closely in bed with the suppliers. Welcome to ‘sales aid’ where rates can include competition prizes and other salesman jollies. Title to kit is guaranteed to be offered back to the supplier and no-one else can reduce the settlement figure or even request a closing balance without tipping off the original salesman. All we want is a level playing field, where we
are free to negotiate the best purchase price on new kit and to obtain a choice of financing from an independent source, to compare with supplier finance. Most manufactures have competed with securing their MIF, Machines in Field, that is us lot, the customers. I don’t know who started this? but it is now even restrictive to the same suppliers wanting to offer new solutions to its competition’s customers. Settling existing leases is proving too expensive to natural upgrades and stopping print shops having the best kit at the best price. Yes, suppliers have made a rod for their own backs and as
usual we are picking up the bill. Many readers have contacted CSN about their present leasing predicament and are looking for a more sensible way to invest in new print technology. Our advice is to keep your new investments separate. Try and run existing deals to their lease end rather than pay interest again on kit you have returned and have no use of. Move the old kit to another location to get best use of it as back up. All the time you pay the rentals it will be available at no extra charge than settling the lease in one go, in advance. In reality most lease companies give a 5% early settlement figure, which may on balance persuade you to keep the lease running rather than pay more interest by refinancing and paying early. Your new investment will be easier to finance without carried forward balances from previous acquisitions and easier to upgrade next time if you can secure title. Of course all this is available now if you opt for a lease purchase agreement, for around 4% more on the rate, and for financing the vat up front you can have title from day one and be in command of your future deals. The problem is we have wanted it both ways. We want the lowest rental and ownership. It is illegal for a leasing company to have rented you
equipment and pass you title, with them writing down the value each year, and you offsetting all the rentals against taxable profits. A genuine third party can buy the equipment from a leasing company and sell it on to whoever it wants. We have all preferred lease rental as it appears cheaper and also it is the only paperwork offered. Some suppliers have developed MPR, minimum period rental, which goes on forever as it has no minimum period. Readers have expressed real discontent with this finance product when they have thought they still had lease end options of peppercorn rents or complete ownership.
Good News All readers of CSN are considered members of CSMA and are eligible for our Copy Shop Members Assoc. special group opportunities. We have sourced a selection of funders through Lease Direct who offer a competitive rate based on our major account status. The preferential group purchasing rates are not the only reason to request a free non obligatory quote, remember the trade-in scenario. CSMA will broker a trade-in value to reduce settlement figures even when changing supplier or make. We will eradicate supplier scenarios of threatening to pick up kit at the lease end when against your wishes.
Best Practice • Negotiate the very best cash price for your next piece of equipment. • Consider the suppliers offer of finance in comparison to your independent CSMA free quote. • Secure a level playing field for future negotiations. • Keep your up-grade options open to all suppliers. • Complete the finance application on line at www.copyshopnews.co.uk or by fax, post or scanned email on the form enclosed in CSN. • Alternatively call Stuart Applewhite at Lease Direct on 01244 527300

DIGITAL IMAGING
A large format printer is more than a digital printing machine. This is not an anonymous grey box that blinks and beeps and spews out standard issue. It has a heart and a soul, an individual character as unpredictable as any living thing. Martin Christie writes‌
Hewlett Packard Z6100
W
ell that’s maybe getting a bit prosaic, but large format printers are not plug and play. They need to be indulged, coaxed and cajoled into producing results. If it is possible to get personal about a machine, like a favourite car, this is it. Each have their own whims and foibles and you can love them or hate them in equal measure, and each at the same time. And to continue the analogy, driving a large format printer is more like handling a performance car. This is not press green button B and walk away. The controls have to be handled with care, the set-up tweaked with sensitivity. For all of the additional driver aids they now add on to try and make them user friendly, LFP will still continue to be something of a black art. One
false move can still lead to disaster. Meeting up with the Z6100 was just like meeting up with an old familiar friend. Like a lot of copy shops we started LFP with Hewlett Packard, running a Designjet 5000 for some six years.. Living and working with the model you get to know its good points and its bad points, along with the steep mountain climb of learning printing with more than four colours in the pot and enlargement limited only by the size of the paper. That printer was installed by the then supplier, along with a customer RIP, along with a brief introduction which as a training session might just as well have been a quick guide to the controls of the starship enterprise. Suffice it to say the on-the-job training
was continuous from that day. The first lesson learnt was to take the printer off the network. This not only prevented work colleagues from inadvertently printing emails on 42 inch paper, but also stopped the whole network grinding to a snails pace every time a large file slipped along the wires. The next thing to go was the RIP. We did try several without really getting comfortable with any of them, and settled to print direct from Adobe’s software selection. It just cut out one less possibility if there was an issue with colour or size. With print on demand, when you are inputting customer files created in one of these programmes, why not just print from them as well. We all use Rips one way or another, the raster image
process is what turns the maths of binary language into the printer picture, but there is no need to make it more complicated than necessary. If you only have one dedicated computer and LFP, workflow management is scarcely necessary. If you are sharing the printer with others, then it becomes essential. With that familiarity and experience, the Z6100 held no fears. It looks a little daunting size wise, as HP are never ones for sleek looks and do like to overdo it on the bodywork. So if you have a small shop you might want to check the dimensions with a tape measure before you try and get it in the door. A lot of the bulk, to be fair, is in addons like the massive take-up spool and a front guard rail that could have been designed for a Land Rover. The Z6100

DIGITAL IMAGING
is a 5000 on steroids as Jeremy Clarkson would probably say if he were road testing it. The old workhorse has been boosted and turbo charged, more fuel, more speed. The six colours have become eight, the thermal heads are now two banks of four, giving a larger print area, and an optical media sensor allows faster printing. HP has gone for a sensible option in “only” eight inks. Personally I think going up into the teens in ink tanks is a little excessive for a relatively small improvement in colour gamut. For the operator, stock is an issue, if you are going to second guess which colours are going to run out first and pick and mix your purchasing. A complete set on inks on this scale is no small investment, especially as the printer will stop when it runs out of any one of them. HP have an option of 400ml or 770 ml cartridges, which again is thoughtful as you can chose one of the other – the larger for light cyan and light magenta for example which tend to take a caning. The thermal heads which heat a minute amount of ink before spraying are individual and can be purchased as such together with a matched head cleaner. Well proven technology, they shouldn’t give any problem, and give fair warning if they are coming to the end of their useful life. Again, because they are individual, you can replace one at a time when needed and not face a massive bill out of the blue for a complete unit. The Vivera pigment inks are a much improved brew, giving an excellent colour reproduction, and extremely good in the often troublesome greyscales. The old 5000s used to have a certain cyan/magenta/yellow cast which was almost a trademark. All printers seem to have a colour bias. My experience is that the Canons seem to err on the magenta, and the Epson, perhaps because of a photographic preference, on the black. Or that may just be my eyes ! The Z6100 has an intelligent take up reel so you can roll up long run printing
rather than have it spill on the floor. This has a magic eye to sense media drop or it can be overridden manually. HP say you can use this, together with 500 ft rolls to print overnight in quantity, but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable walking away from a big job. I do know a printer who does this but he has installed a web cam so he can get up in the middle of the night to check. I think I would rather sleep soundly, and there are probably more interesting things to view on webcam than ink drying, at least so I’ve been told. The software that comes with the Z6100 is also much improved, giving you a complete display of everything you need to know, as well as control over the settings, media and machine settings. A 40G harddrive is also able to store jobs which is really useful for reprints,
as long as you can remember what the file name was, a job log can be accessed from the control panel directly on the machine. This is now the universally favoured (by manufacturers not by me) push button multiple option type, but it is reasonably logical to work your way around and should not give rise to too many apoplectic moments The machine is available in 42 or 60 inch versions, the larger one having twice the ram (512Mb) as the former. The end result is a fitter, faster package all round for handling big files. We were able to put the Z6100 on the network without it causing log jams in the system. The printer is also available with or without an Adobe Postscript RIP, just another optional performance item that may smooth out any of those final issues when machines have to start talking to each other. The old 5000 used to have a
23
calibration device, but the new Z6100 has a state of the art GretagMacbeth spectrometer that can create ICC profiles for foreign media if you want to get that accurate. Maybe a little bit over the top, but it’s another technical tool in the box for your money. The HP has excellent support, not only from the manufacturers website, but from user forums and advice groups. As similar models have been out and about in quantity worldwide there is a lot of cross party information out there easily accessed. As with a lot of modern print machinery there is still a lot to be learnt from each other, often only when the printers are fired up in anger on the studio floor. It’s interesting following some of the forum threads and viewing the varied opinions on printers in that its so much like the personal preference in cars – like BMW drivers who wouldn’t be seen dead in an Audi and vice versa. But overall the Z6100 gets a pretty good recommendation from lots of independent sources, so you can’t say much fairer than that. HP were kind enough to give us an extended trial of the Z6100 so we could really let it stretch its legs, and long enough to get the hang of all its little mannerisms. Curiously, for all the improvements, one little issue still remains from the old 5000 series in that the long paper spindle can be a little awkward with heavy media and doesn’t always seat firmly in the left hand socket. Unless you check that it is firmly in and locked, it is possible for the spindle to pop out when under load printing. Not a major problem when you know it, but surprising some sort of positive lock hasn’t been added with all the good new features. I can’t be the only HP 5000 owner to have had a roll of paper scuttle across the studio floor with the printer itself blissfully unaware and still printing! FESPA
This year’s FESPA Digital event attracted 9,682 visitors over three days, reflecting the overriding optimism of the wide-format sector.
Best ever FESPA Digital t
he increase of almost 25% in visitors compared with the last FESPA Digital 2008 in Geneva points to printers’ ongoing need to take advantage of the continued technical innovation in digital wide format printing, as well as their clear focus on exploring new applications and business models to fuel commercial success. 73% of visitors came from outside the Netherlands, reinforcing the international appeal of FESPA events. Managing director of FESPA, Frazer Chesterman observes: “To increase the visitor audience of a businessto-business exhibition year on year is remarkable in any circumstances, but especially so in light of the prevailing economic conditions, which are impacting severely on so many events. Pre-registrations to FESPA Digital 2009 were exceptionally high, but the fact that nearly 10,000 individual printers acted on this interest and made a firm commitment to invest time attending the event is the real achievement.”
Visitors to the event discovered more than 300 exhibitors showing a vast array of new or enhanced products and solutions, among them more than 50 new wide format printers. Over one third of visitors to the show returned for a second day to maximise the value of their visit, many of them taking the opportunity to attend seminar sessions in FESPA’s Digital Revolutionary Theatre and the topical live debates on FESPA’s own stand. More than 80 delegates attended FESPA’s Digital Textile conference to explore the trends and opportunities in fabric

the HP Scitex FB7500 Printer delivers productivity along with high print speeds and standard three-quarter automation. Designed to provide screen printers with an easy transition into digital printing, the HP Scitex FB7500 Printer can print 105 1.2 x 2.4m (4 x 8ft) sheets per hour (500m2/hr; 5,380 ft2/hr), delivering the highest productivity of digital flatbed printers in its price class. The HP Scitex FB6100 Printer series expands HP’s customer offerings within the midrange UV platforms and technologies. The new HP Scitex FB6050 Printer is a new addition to the successful HP Scitex FB6100 Printer series, and serves as an entry-level product within this range, delivering the speed and robust performance required of print environments. This versatile series shortens turnaround times and increases productivity with production print speeds of up to 100 m²/hr (1,070 ft²/hr), fast-drying UV inks and a print resolution of up to 1,270 x 800dpi on a broad range of media, including ceramic tiles, glass or acrylic boards, wooden doors and acoustic ceiling tiles. Robust, reliable and with a heavy-duty frame, the HP Scitex FB6100 Printer series is designed for production environments that operate 24/7.
applications. Frazer Chesterman continues: “’Digital Revolution’ has been the defining theme of this event, lending an assertive and optimistic mood to the show. Talking to exhibitors, the exceptional footfall and buoyant mood exceeded their expectations, some having anticipated a more subdued atmosphere. “Early feedback shows that most exhibitors hit or exceeded their targets, meeting existing customers and new prospects, conducting meaningful business discussions and reporting concrete sales successes. Most
importantly though, our exhibitors’ commitment to FESPA Digital 2009 has given them a robust pipeline of business which can help them to grow again quickly when the economic revival does occur. “In that respect, FESPA Digital can hopefully give real impetus to our community’s future development, and this remains a key motivation for all FESPA events”, concludes Frazer Chesterman. “Our recent World Wide Survey indicates that sales of digital output solutions are still forecast to grow by 1 to 3%, so there is still clear scope for growth and, with that, a wealth of business opportunity for exhibitors and visitors.” The next FESPA Digital event will take place in hamburg, Germany, from 24-26 May 2011, moving to Barcelona, Spain, in Spring 2012. In the interim, FESPA will stage its flagship global event, FESPA 2010, in Munich, Germany from 22-26 June 2010.
TRUEPRESS SIGNS
at Fespa in Amsterdam Screen’s growing commitment towards environmental trends was demonstrated with its large-format, high quality Truepress Jet2500UV showing its capabilities as a textile printer which complements its versatility to output onto most roll-fed and rigid materials. Using the company’s own flexible UV-curable ink technology, display producers can now print direct to textiles for a wide variety of durable soft signs, banners and flags without having to resort to traditional two-stage dye sublimation processes. The Truepress Jet2500UV uses Screen’s flexible UV-curable inks and drop-ondemand variable dot piezo-electric grayscale printheads to make it suitable for producing applications on virtually all roll-fed and sheet materials. To meet the growing demand for textile-based displays, these inks have been formulated with the correct levels of flexibility to make them ideal for printing direct onto fabrics without the need for machine modifications. The precision achieved from the six picolitre droplets, in combination with he elasticity in the ink’s technology and the correct strength of UV curing, results in strong adhesion with no flaking and cracking. Typical speeds of 34m2/hour enable the Truepress Jet2500UV to compete favourably with dedicated textile print on demand systems. Colours are strong and vibrant and there is no need for special pre- or post-treatment of the materials. Because of the drive throughout industry to use greener criteria where possible, producing display applications onto polyester-based material is becoming increasingly popular because of its recyclable properties. Polyester fabrics also benefit from being resistant to creasing, lighter and more portable than many traditional flexible alternatives. The Truepress Jet2500UV is a truly versatile performer and, as well as textiles, it can print direct to other flexible and rigid materials, with fast and simple change-over between flat-bed and roll-fed configurations.

coles Copying, the first print company in the UK to install the new KIP Color 80 toner plan and poster printer are looking for resellers in all areas. More cost effective and much faster than both inkjet and short run litho, this service will allow our shops to say yes for sizes over A3. This revolutionary
colour LFP is featured on the CSN front page demonstration suite www. copyshopnews.co.uk We have now finalised a UK recommended retail price for this new service and believe end users will enjoy communicating in colour on a large scale with best use of their budgets. Historically we have all had to try to explain when A4 is £1, A3 £2, why does A2 start at around £20 for a one off. Well yes it is all down to the economies of scale, but with this one, not many end users will have the volume to justify the £100K+ investment. Far better to have a network of trusted local suppliers working with Coles by email and courier. Here are the one off and 100+ rates with the option for each shop to work out their own sliding scale to best suit
their existing small format pricing. The Coles trade rate is the same unit cost, whatever the print run length, so people can run their own businesses without having to ask you for bespoke quotes. One simple price list for bone fide trade only will be easy for CSN readers to launch their own A0 colour service. RRP Trade A2 £6 100+ rate £4 £3 A1 £14 100+ rate £9 £6 A0 £29 100+ rate 15 £12 If we all use the above pricing and add post and packing onto our customers quotes this new service will be an extra revenue stream for us all. DUPLO Cheque Book best practice is definitely being set with this profit project. We cannot believe how low the production costs are that allow us to sell a print promotion with distribution at such a no brainer price to our local traders. As highlighted last month the savings are due in part to the Duplo printer technology which is sort of hybrid; it is a copier but with ink. A plate is made inside automatically, either from a scan from the copy glass or a file from your PC, and then prints are made at a fraction of the price of toner copies. No cleaning or make ready, this is operated like any normal copier. Best of both worlds? How about 1000 A5 one colour flyers at a production cost of less than £4 including colour paper. How much would you sell these for? Our own copying cost price list quotes 3p a copy x 500 as two to view, plus the an extra tenner for coloured stock, say £25. You couldn’t litho this sort of job and deliver the same day. Any way back to your local cheque book. Printing 25 voucher cheques 4 to view A4 in one colour on a normal 80 gsm stock, with a 160 gsm colour card printed cover finished with perf and staple will have unit cost of under 10p per cheque book. Keep a note of the £10 per 100 books, as the profit is spread across the 25 customer participants. You can have the colour advertising on the inside front and back covers.
distribution Here is the clever bit. Each of the 25 traders with their one voucher cheque in each book gets 100 books to hand out to his best 100 customers. Distribution will be direct to 25 x 100 = 2500 shop referrals to people already out and about supporting local businesses.
sales So how much should you charge for a 2500 flyer run plus direct distribution to the point of need? A local supportive rate may be around £40 to £50 just for the print. This would leave the customer, in his own time, to deliver 2500 leaflets and for them to have to gain some ‘pre-bin’ interest on their own merits. Far better to unite our efforts and create a quality distribution of a product with a very high perceived value. Include a local conservatory or window firm that can offer a £1000 off voucher as you may want to total up the value of the whole book.
profit Does it always have to be about profit? Yes, of course we have a business to run and there is loads here plus the free advertising from you to 2500 prospective punters who may not even know you. Each business will pay £37 for 2500 adverts including print and distribution. They will each be given 100 cheque books to reward their own customers in thanks for their custom. Your sales will total £925 plus any artwork charges and cost we agreed earlier at less than £250 It is the Duplo print process that makes all this possible as you need to print under the normal digital copying rate. Remember that the profit stacks up with Duplo. Call Duplo on 0800 38 77 99

A lot of our 6600 CSN print shops want to do more but not at the expense of weakening their present marketing message. Print and parcel service centre has been well received and does not look as if we are trying too hard due to the downturn. A complimentary service needs to do just that, yes, receive compliments from old and new customers alike, so they are glad we are now doing, ‘whatever’. Most of our businesses have had bolt on services, one memorable print shop in Sussex promoted, Colour Copying and Aromatherapy; another a print trade magazine, whatever next? We do not want to diversify but simply bolt on new allied services. Natural progression for most of our print shops will be to also supply stationery at the point of need. Print and Stationery. How does that sound? Maybe not revolutionary as many of you are at it already and good luck to you. As for the rest; you are now formally invited to join in supplying all sorts of supplies that compliment print. Aiming for the top we have partnered with Spicers. It doesn’t get any better than the group CSMA deal we have been offered. Volunteers are required to beta test the process before we roll out to all 6600 print shops. The group purchasing power has secured us fantastic reseller pricing that will attract new customers, spoil our existing ones and save on our own usage. As the 8 million and growing SOHO, Small Office Home Office, businesses opt for a one stop shop scenario, we have to fight to keep print in the high street. Imagine your customers ‘To Do List’. Buy envelopes, print poster, buy dividers and ring binders, order new business cards. OK, can you and should you be able to deliver all these services from your shop? Or if not will you be diverting your customers to some soul less industrial estate? The real question is are you up for selling more to secure your existing business? If your answer is yes, please register your interest in the first place here, stationery@ copyshopnews.co.uk

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
GREAT NAMES, hIT ThE BUTTON when advising new businesses on their start up stationery please remember to check the web name is available to match the company name. Use the free checker above which is on our regular front page www.copyshopnews.co.uk It is easier to promote one name rather than two and is a good check on whether someone else is already trading under that great new name you have all come up with. Check availability as you go along Be structured and organised about this – draw up a list of possibilities as you go along and note what is available, what has been registered and what is being actively used. Searching for available domains is free and secure at your express link from www.copyshopnews. co.uk. If a domain is already taken, you can find out some information about the owner by clicking to see the “Who is” lookup. Put yourself in a potential customer’s shoes. Does the domain suggest what type of business it is? Does it give the right impression? Is it catchy and memorable?
Sanity checks your final shortlist this last point is incredibly important. Make sure you write your domain name ideas down and look at them carefully. Can the letters make up a different word to what you intended? Read it aloud. Spell it out. Get other people to look at it. See if your friends can remember it. See what it will look like on an ad or a business card. Choosing a name for your internet business is like choosing a name for your child – you don’t want to be changing in the future, if at all possible. Bear in mind that a hyphen is a valid character in a domain name and can be useful to visually break up words within a domain. Also hyphens can help to separate out the keywords that search engines “read”. For everything a business needs to establish and develop its internet presence, quickly and affordably, please use the link from our live news front page www.copyshopnews.co.uk

charitable case A very rich salesman is approached by a charity worker who is concerned that the salesman didn’t donate any money to charity, despite making over £1m that year. “First of all,” says the salesman, “my mother is bedridden and gets no help from social services. Second, I have five kids through three divorce marriages. Third, my sister’s husband recently died and she has no one to support her four children.” “I’m terribly sorry,” says the charity worker, “I feel bad about asking for your money.” So you should,” replies the salesman. “If I’m not giving them any money, why should I give you any?”
Muchas Grassias
One afternoon, a wealthy salesman is riding in the back of his limousine when he sees two men eating grass by the side of the road. He orders his driver to stop and he gets out to investigate. “Why are you eating grass?” he asks one man. “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replies. “Oh, come along with me then,” says the salesman graciously. “But sir, I have a wife with two children!” says the man. “Bring them along!” says the salesman, “and you, come with us too.” “But sir, I have a wife with six children!” the second man answers. “Bring them as well!” says the salesman. They all climb into the car. En route, one of the poor fellows says: “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The salesman replies: “No problem, the grass at my home is about two feet tall!”

Sitting in a pub, a man turns to a fellow drinker and says: “Just tell me one thing: why is there only one Monopolies Commission?”
GeorGe and the draGon
Late one evening, after closing time, an exhausted tourist knocks on the door of an isolated, countryside pub, the George and Dragon. The landlady sticks her head out of the window. “Excuse me, I’m lost and hungry, could you spare me a little food?” the tourist asks. The woman glances at his dirty clothes and shouts back, “No!” “Could I at least use your loo?” the tourist pleads. “No!” the landlady shouts again. “Then,” the tourist says, “might I please...” “What now?” barks the woman. “Do you suppose,” he asks, “I might have a word with George?”
first and last orders
A man walks into a bar with a roll of Tarmac under his arm and says: “Pint, please, and one for the road...”
hard rule
Black Tarmac and Concrete are arguing in a bar. Black Tarmac turns to Concrete and says: “I’m harder than you, I built the M1!” Concrete retorts: “I’m harder than you! I built Heathrow’s runways!” Just then the door bursts open and Red Tarmac and Concrete go quiet. The barman notices and asks them why they aren’t saying anything. “We might be hard,” says Concrete, “but he’s a bloody cycle path!”
battery charGer
A battery charger walks into a bar. The barman says: “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.”

Shakespeare walks into a tavern. “Oi, Shakespeare” shouts the barman, “You’re bard!”

A sales woman goes for her annual checkup and is told she only has 24 hours to live. She rushed home, explains to her husband and says: “I want to spend my last night having wild, crazy sex.” “Well, that’s easy for you to say,” her husband replies, “you don’t have to get up in the morning.”
the robot
A popular bar has a new robotic barman installed. A guy comes in for a drink and the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man replies: “130.” So the robot goes on to make conversation about physics, astronomy and so on. The man listens intently and thinks: “This is really cool.” Another guy comes in for a drink and the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man responded: “100.” So the robot starts talking about TV, the weather and so on. The man thinks to himself: “Wow, this is really cool.” A third guy comes into the bar. As with the others the robot asks him: “What’s your IQ?” The man replies: “80.” The robot says: “So, how are your copier sales figures these days?”

Yee-haw
An old cowboy goes to a bar and orders a drink. As he sits sipping his whiskey, a young lady sits down next to him. She turns to the cowboy and asks: “Are you a real cowboy?” He replies: “Well, I’ve spent my whole life on the ranch, herding horses, mending fences and branding cattle, so I guess I am.” She replies: “I’m a lesbian, I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. As I watch TV, or eat, I think about women. Everything seems to make me think about women.” The two sit sipping in silence. A short time later, a man sits down the other side of the old cowboy and asks: “Are you a real cowboy?” He replies: “I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian.”
Wanted
The sheriff of Dodge City walks into the saloon and calls for everyone’s attention. “Has anybody here seen Brown Paper Jake in the last 24 hours?” he asks. “What’s he look like?” asks one of the cowboys. “Well,” says the sheriff, “he wears a brown paper hat, brown paper waistcoat, brown paper trousers and, when it’s cold, a brown paper poncho.” “What’s he wanted for?” asks the barman. “Rustlin’.”
Hearing voices
In a pub, a man feeds his coins into the cigarette machine, but instead of producing a pack of 16, the machine says to him: “Sod off, ashtray, you stink of fags and you shouldn’t smoke anyway because you’re too fat.” Astonished, the man returns to his seat at the bar and signals to the landlord. As the landlord approaches, the man takes a couple of nuts from a bowl on the bar, only to hear from the bowl: “Great shirt, mate. And I see you’ve got that new mobile everyone’s on about – cool!” Now freaked, the man says to the landlord: “I’m not being funny, but I’ve just been insulted by the fag machine and now this bowl of nuts is saying nice things to me.” “Don’t worry, sir” says the landlord. “The cigarette machine is out of order but the peanuts are complimentary.”
A man went to his local gym to ask about Yoga Classes for beginners.
The definitive explanation of... MARKETING
This will clear up any confusion ... You’re a woman and you see a handsome man at a party. You go up to him and say, “I’m fantastic in bed.” That’s Direct Marketing. You’re at a party with a bunch of friends and see a handsome man. One of your friends goes up to him and pointing at you says, “She’s fantastic in bed.” That’s Advertising. You see a handsome man at a party. You go up to him and get his telephone number. The next day you call and say, “Hi, I’m fantastic in bed.” That’s Telemarketing. You see a man at a party, you straighten your dress. You walk up to him and pour him a drink. You say, “May I,” and reach up to straighten his tie, brushing your breast lightly against his arm... And then say, “By the way, I’m fantastic in bed.” That’s Public Relations. You’re at a party and see a handsome man. He walks up to you and says, I hear you’re fantastic in bed.” That’s Brand Recognition. You’re at a party and see a handsome man. He fancies you, but you talk him into going home with your friend. That’s a Sales Rep. Your friend can’t satisfy him so she calls you. That’s Tech Support. You’re on your way to a party when you realize that there could be handsome men in all these houses you’re passing. So you climb onto the roof of one situated towards the centre and shout at the top of your lungs, “I’m fantastic in bed!” That’s Junk Mail. I hope you all have a complete understanding of Marketing now
The instructor asked, “How flexible are you?”
Dear Mr. Darling
Dear Mr. Darling, Please find below my suggestion for fixing Britain’s economy. Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan: There are about 20 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them £1 million a piece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations: 1) They MUST retire. Twenty million job openings — Unemployment fixed 2) They MUST buy a new British car. Twenty million cars ordered — Auto Industry fixed 3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage — Housing Crisis fixed 4) They MUST send their kids to school/ college/university — Crime rate fixed 5) They MUST buy £50 of alcohol/ tobacco a week ... and there’s your money back in duty/tax etc It can’t get any easier than that! P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances.
Hitch Hiker
Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally. “What in bag?” asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, “It’s a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband.” The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said: “Good trade…..”
“Well,” replied the man,

In demand A man was leaving a cafe when he noticed an unusual funeral. A funeral Coffin was followed by a second one. Behind the second coffin was a solitary man walking with a black dog. Behind him was a queue of 200 men walking in single line. The man couldn’t stand his curiosity. He approached the man walking with the dog, “I am so sorry to disturb you, but I’ve never seen a funeral like this with so many of you walking in single line. Whose funeral is it?” The man replied, “That first coffin is for my wife.” “What happened to her?” “My dog attacked and killed her.” “Well, who is in the second coffin?” My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog attacked and killed her also.” A thoughtful moment of silence passes between the two men. Then the man asks in excitement, “Can I borrow the dog?” The man replied, “Join the queue.”
The Ventriloquist A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he’s doing a show in a small town in Notts. With his dummy on his knee, he’s going through his usual dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde sales woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting: “I’ve heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the colour of a person’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community and from reaching their full potential as a person, because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against, not only blondes, but women in general and all in the name of humour!” The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, when the blonde yells: “You stay out of this, mister! I’m talking to that little bloke on your knee!”
“I can’t do Wednesdays...”
