…and the show season is over. Well unless you are rich enough to be travelling to Munich this month for the FESPA festivities.

We are now in a position to plan our budgets for investing in our suppliers latest wares. There are a few ex-dem low mileage bargains about so do ask for an IPEX printer that is already run in. Remember, for a change you are the customer, which makes you qualify for asking for discount. Add to this that you are one of 6600 professional print businesses and claim your CSMA group discount. You have to buy competitively to compete in the market today especially when these shores are being bombarded by imports supported by some other print magazines and show organisers.

If your magazine opens with a trade print service from Italy or a take out from China then get rid of it.

Do also question why its supporters are sponsoring competition from so far away that the product miles for a finished print job add carbon to an industry the rest of us are trying to clean up.

We must value our locally produced print products, after all this is what we are selling isn’t it?

Anyway with airline schedules under a bit of a cloud we should be manufacturing and marketing print at home.

Exhibitors reported brisk trade at Sign & Digital UK 2010

The show was a resounding success giving weight to the renewed optimism in the market. Building on the success of last year, Sign & Digital UK affirmed its place as the premier visual communications show in the UK. The volume of business done at the show was testament to the optimism and opportunities this market offers.

Rudi Blackett, event director comments: “This year’s show played a vital role in helping to generate business and move the industry forwards and we were delighted to play host to many new products and showcase demonstrations of a wide range of products and services. I would like to give a big thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors alike, who contributed to the success of Sign & Digital UK 2010.”

Many exhibitors were delighted with the show’s attendance and the flow of visitors interested in learning more about their products and actually placing orders at the event.

Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services, enjoyed unprecedented sales in the week of the show, with orders placed across all market sectors and key products selling out. John de la Roche, Hybrid’s national sales manager, said “We’re in the fortunate position of having our April and May order books absolutely full.

Our resellers had an excellent show and we’re working hard to fulfill the machine orders as quickly as we can.”

John Clements of Boldscan had this to say about the show “We were delighted once again with very good attendance numbers at this year’s Sign & Digital UK show, where we introduced several new products and handed out over 750 of our new Product Guides. The Show remains our flagship event for launching new

products and introducing our new product guide each year and has once again delivered for us as promised.”

Ivaylo Vladimirov, project manager at Mouse PS comments, “Having exhibited at Sign & Digital UK 2010 for the first time, we found it to be a fantastic show that provided a great many opportunities for making new business contacts. We have come here specifically to build our brand and reputation with sign making companies in the UK, and have taken considerable steps to achieving this aim.”

Dean Carpenter from Laserite summed up the success of the show “We had an excellent show this year. For each of the three show days we had a steady stream of good quality enquiries, some of which have already resulted in sales of our Lotus laser systems. Bookings for our on-site demo vehicle are the highest that they have ever been. We’ve already re-booked for 2011’’ Alan Caddick, marketing manager for the show adds, “There were numerous features that received great feedback from visitors, such as the Manchester United competition sponsored by Hybrid Services, the Grafityp F1 wrapping competition, the incredible wealth of new product launches, the Adobe and Corel seminars, the new Signmakers Workshop, as well as the Ibiza Angels at the massage zone. We are already planning our features programme for 2011 and would welcome any suggestions as to what visitors would like to see at the event.’’

Sign & Digital UK 2010 overall attendance, subject to audit, was 6,114 with over 5,500 of these being unique visitors.

Over 30 stands have already been booked, with many more to follow in the coming weeks, for next year’s show which is being held on 12-14 April 2011, in Halls 17&18 at the NEC, Birmingham.

New DigiFold for ASAP ASAP Digital of Sheffield has installed a DigiFold 5000P creaser/ folder from Morgana to finish output from an HP Indigo 3050.

As the name implies, prompt delivery is central to ASAP’s operation and director David Allsopp stresses that investment in digital finishing technology has been a key factor in his company’s success. “We produce high quality work with turnaround times of 24 or 48 hours depending on the type of job involved. Finishing bottlenecks are simply not an option, which is why we also operate a DocuMaster bookletmaking system, a Major folder and an EBA programmatic guillotine — all from Morgana.”

The DigiFold 5000P, which replaces an earlier model, was chosen for its greater speed — 5000 plus sheets per hour — and its ability to handle larger sizes — up to 700mm x 385mm. “When we don’t need folding, we can use the DigiFold as a stand-alone creaser and it also has a perforating function” David Allsopp comments “It has made a big contribution to our ability to handle higher volumes.”

New National Insurance policy better for small firms and jobs, says Forum of Private Business

The Forum of private Business is welcoming the new Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition government’s decision to scrap the planned 1% hike in employers’ national insurance (NI) for many staff members, a policy that had been met with strong opposition from business groups.

The ‘tax on jobs’ had been scheduled to take place in 2011 – when many analysts anticipate small businesses will be seeking to recruit in earnest in order to meet renewed demand.

Although the 1% employers’ NI rise remains for staff earning more than £20,800, the threshold at which they begin paying NI on employees earning up to that figure will increase by £21 per week - meaning most will be spared a major tax increase in return for retaining staff and taking on new employees.

“Small businesses did not want this tax on jobs because clearly it would have been a major barrier to staff retention and job creation and would have hindered economic recovery,” said the Forum’s Chief Executive Phil Orford. “For the majority of employers it would have proved to be an unpopular and unworkable tax rise. Although not perfect, the new coalition government’s policy on NI is far better and provides a degree of certainty for business growth now and in the future.”

According to the latest Economy Watch member panel survey carried out by the Forum 43% of small businesses selected the cost of employment as the joint biggest barrier to recruitment along with economic conditions and the ‘local business climate’.

The interim results of the Forum’s quarterly Referendum survey, which is published on Thursday 19 May, show that 60.8% of respondents believe the new government should prioritise ‘tax simplification’ while 45.9% selected ‘reducing barriers to employment’ and 38.5% ‘a fairer distribution of the tax burden’.

In a statement released coinciding with the new administration’s first ever joint press conference, in which the Conservative Party’s David Cameron promised a “new politics” of “reassurance and stability”, the Government confirmed its plans to increase employers’ NI threshold.

The move was originally drawn up by the Conservative’s following the backlash over the previous administration’s plan to increase NI for both employees and employers by 1%.

In addition, the party planned to increase the threshold for employees’ NI contributions.

However, following this latest announcement employees will continue to pay 1% more in NI. Instead, the money that would have been used to fund the Conservative’s proposed employee NI threshold increases will be used to help lower and middle income earners in the form of a rise in income tax personal allowances from April 2011.

Jewel in the crown for Pink Panther

Pink Panther Digital will save £1,500 a month in vinyl and laminates as well as reducing its overtime bill by eliminating the mounting processes as a result of its latest investment.

It has been supplied with anHP Scitex FB-950 UV inkjet digital printer by The Paper Company (PaperCo).

Paper merchant PaperCo has a specialist digital equipment sales operation supplying the UK with a range of hardware products and specialist technical advice.

Pink Panther, an eight year old award winning business specialising in the exhibitions, signage and short run, quick turnround digital market wanted a high speed, good quality flatbed solution and it is pleased with the machine that PaperCo recommended.

Jon Stephens, managing director of Pink Panther, says: “The HP brand name was important and we were impressed by the quality of the FB-950 shown at the demonstration. It’s a full colour machine that complements our wide format portfolio and gives us a tool to print on any substrate up to 50mm thick including Foamex, banner materials, polypropylene and even doors.”

The company looked at a broad range of options over a 24 month period before coming down in favour of the FB-950. It can handle media up to 2.5 m wide and almost any length in sheets or rolls.

“It is very easy to switch between different substrates and the set up time is minimal,” says Mr Stephens. “The RIP and software are very user

friendly and we are going to find the roll to roll mechanism very useful. It arms us to keep ahead of our competitors in terms of capability but also quality.

Its maximum running speed is 80 sq m an hour but we are happy to run it at the slower production mode for 80% of our work.”

Pink Panther has nothing but praise for the thought that has gone into this touchscreen controlled HP unit where changing ink and running and switching jobs is so easy. It can even produce a range of images on one roll or sheet and automatically splice them. But Pink Panther is equally pleased with the service and support provided by PaperCo. “PaperCo held our hand throughout the installation as the machine was new technology for our staff.

The service levels and the training have been good throughout,” says Mr Stephens.

Prometheus invests in £180k Duplo digital finishing suite

Established litho printer, Prometheus Press, has enhanced its new digital operation with the investment of a £180,000 Duplo digital finishing suite.

The Kent-based firm have purchased a DPB-500 PUR perfect binder, Ultra 205A uv coater, Digital System 445 bookletmaker, DC-445IFS creaser, Renz punch binding equipment and Matrix laminator from Vivid.

The finishing equipment purchase is another stage of the company’s expansion plans, which saw them recently purchase an HP Indigo 7000 and move to a new 30,000 square foot premises.

“Our objective for the digital finishing

equipment was clear - quick set-up, ease of use with a quality, consistent finish” explains Julian Marsh, Managing Director at Prometheus.

“We wanted our digital bindery to be flexible and adaptable to a wide variety of short to medium run jobs. We liked the Duplos as they are very simple to use and robust, not a combination that is easy to find with finishing equipment.

They also have a good reputation on service, which is important when buying lots of new devices all at once, and they have been very reactive to our needs.”

The company aims to offer their newer digital print services to their existing litho base so they can guarantee best pricing and turnaround

times whatever the run length.

“Our litho operation, with four state of the art presses, can help cater for our clients’ larger volumes. For the smaller run lengths, we can use our digital setup, including the new Duplos, to offer best price and quick turnarounds, all with the same professional Prometheus service support that has helped us grow into a large established print business” Marsh says.

The DPB-500 PUR will be used for primarily high volume perfect bound book work, whilst the Ultra 205A will form part of the company’s new photobook production line as well as coating high gloss commercial work.

The DC-445IFS’ will be used for a

multitude of direct mail and folding work, whilst the Digital System 445 with squareback is predicted to be a high traffic machine, including an added option to produce ‘mini booklets’. The Renz Punch 500 and ECL 500 desktop binding machines will be used mainly for calendar work, training manuals and presentation books.

Operations Manager Michael Ralph explains; “I find the Duplo kit very flexible and I like the scalability which means we can easily upgrade the kit in the future. Within seconds I can get them set-up and running work through, which is crucial for our quick turnaround times. We can now efficiently and economically finish run lengths of 1 to 500 in a matter of minutes.”

As for the future, Marsh explains that whilst they are taking a sensible and measured approach to their new digital set-up, there is no doubting the clear goal; “I want Prometheus to be a powerhouse in digital print. We have the right tool box to grow this business aggressively in the next few years by not only offering digital, as well as litho, to some of existing customers but by challenging for larger accounts and contracts.”

“We are able to move into digital in a measured way. We have the heartbeat of our litho engines as the mainstay of the business still, whilst we have he luxury of ‘bedding-in’ our digital equipment over the next few months.

This will ensure we get our digital products and processes absolutely perfected, which will benefit our customers, both current and future. It is a great position to be in”.

Unique outdoor exhibition calls for unique printing solution

Transforming an entire neighbourhood into an outdoor art gallery is no small feat. But for Look Print, one of Australia’s highest capacity large-format digital printing companies, no job is too big, too small or too challenging. A perfect case in point is a unique exhibition, titled “150 Locals”, which spanned the entire suburb of Glebe, Sydney. The exhibition showcased 150 life-size photographic portraits of Glebe’s vibrant community members in various locations, including outdoor public spaces, cafes and retail outlets.

Finding the ideal combination of print service provider (PSP) and printing solution was imperative to the exhibition’s success. With HP as the production sponsor and printer of the indoor prints, and Look Print as the print service provider (PSP) for all outdoor prints, well-known Australian photographers North Sullivan and Tom Psomotragos could achieve the print quality they needed to express Glebe’s cultural diversity in their portraits.

To meet the high expectations for the 150 Locals exhibition, Look Print used its HP Designjet L65500 Printer to create the 1,6 x 1 m (63 x 39.4 in) and 1 x 1 m (39.4 x 39.4 in) outdoor prints on PVC banner. All indoor portraits were produced by HP in Melbourne on Hahnemühle FineArt Canvas, with the same dimensions as the outdoor prints, using the HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer.

According to Margarita Campos, Operations Manager at Look Print, the HP Designjet L65500 Printer was chosen for this challenging job on account of its “superior brightness, durability, quality, and environmental profile”. Indeed, achieving the desired quality was relatively straightforward. “We created machine proofs of a number of the photos and the photographers did spot checks. Only a few adjustments were needed at this stage. The artists loved the intensity of the colour prints and the black and white prints came out crisp and neutral.”

The entire run of 100 outdoor prints was produced without a single reprint. “We needed to do a few replacement prints after installation due to graffiti and vandalism,” recalls Campos. “We found the colour consistency of the HP Designjet L65500 Printer from week to week to be excellent. All of this made our job much easier.”

Look Print has been serving some of Australia’s most successful companies for more than 14 years. Its ongoing commitment to the community and environmental sustainability prompted it to purchase the HP Designjet L65500 Printer in 2009.

“The HP Designjet L65500 Printer has lower energy consumption compared to the other printing systems 8

we use, which require a special ventilation system and external dryer,” explains Campos. “We also wanted to move away from solvent inks because of the fumes they create and the difficult disposal of left over ink.”

Installing the HP Designjet L65500 Printer has also enabled a better working environment for Look Print’s employees. “Using water-based HP Latex Inks, which require no hazard labels and are non-flammable and non-combustible, makes handling far easier for our operators. The inks also don’t need any additional special ventilation, which has the side benefit of contributing to the power savings. Our operators also like the ease of use: with the high printing quality and reliability of the printer, they can load up multiple jobs and walk away.”

According to Campos, the environmental benefits of its new printer do not come at the expense of quality or productivity. “We achieve excellent colour gamut and the colour consistency with solid colours is amazing. Our productivity has also improved as most of our jobs use banner media narrower than 1,2 m (4 ft) so we can print on two rolls simultaneously.”

The HP Designjet L65500 Printer has opened up new business areas for Look Print. In addition to using the new printer for its traditional outdoor banners, high quality point of sale displays and poster work, Look Print also now offers soft signage printing.

“With this new line of business, we can create a new competitive edge and offer our customers a fresh and innovative way to market their products,” says Campos. “Markets such as fine art printing and soft signage printing are additional business opportunities facilitated by the HP Designjet L65500 Printer.”

NEW XEROX 800/1000 PRESSES

Print service providers looking to expand their digital businesses now have two new options to produce sophisticated, full-colour sales collateral, direct-marketing pieces and photo publishing products — the Xerox Colour 800/1000 Presses.

The systems — printing 80- and 100-pages-perminute respectively — can produce high definition image quality on a wide range of paper stock. An optional clear dry ink station, a feature exclusive to these devices within the Xerox colour portfolio, amplifies full-colour jobs. This clear, dry ink allows for images and text to be highlighted for visual impact, or digital watermarks applied for artistic effect or security. It is also beneficial for variabledata applications using Xerox’s XMPie software, as it displays personalised content in more vivid ways.

COVER STORY: Duplo spearheads finishing market with new knife folding option

Duplo International has extended the inline capabilities of its popular DC445 creaser range by adding a knife fold attachment to the single system operation. With the new Integrated

Folding System, printers can now fully finish different applications such as greeting cards, CD covers, brochures, leaflets and many more without additional operators. The knife folder incorporates two knife folds making it ideal for parallel fold applications such as letter and gate folds. With a speed of up to 50 sheets per minute, the new folder matches the capabilities of Duplo’s creasers and can also be bypassed for no fold applications.

The Integrated Folding System can also incorporate other elements such as a cross and straight conveyor as well as simple and more sophisticated high capacity stackers specifically designed to neatly stack and retain even heavier jobs such as folded card stock. The cross conveyor version keeps single batch outputs in sequence for applications such as

photos, coupons and personalised direct mail.

The modular range enables customers to configure as many as 18 different arrangements to suit their individual requirements and match the flexibility of jobs that can be run on the Duplo range of finishers for digital colour print. As a result, the Integrated Folding System can easily handle items printed in multiple up formats, making it suitable for general commercial folding applications as well as sorting requirements for sequentially printed jobs.

Canon’s new monochrome imageRUNNER ADVANCE models Canon UK has announced the launch of three new innovative black and white light production models based on its imageRUNNER ADVANCE technology platform. The new models are designed for CRDs (Central or Corporate Reprographic Departments) and ‘print-for-pay’ environments.

The three new models in the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 series (including the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8085, 8095 and 8105, running at speeds of 85, 95 and 105 pages per minute respectively) address the needs of professional print service providers with lower volume production requirements than those of imagePRESS customers.

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 models deliver high productivity and image quality with a maximum image resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. The new devices can handle paper stocks up to 256gsm (up to 220gsm duplex) and sheet sizes larger than SRA3, a notable improvement over their predecessor, the Canon iR7000 series. The new advanced models also offer improved finishing options, faster warm-up time and a Canon controller that enables genuine, Adobe PostScript Level 3 on all three new models.

The printers can be fitted either with a Fiery-based imagePASS-U1 RIP, or an optional Canon Adobe PostScript or PCL (Printer Control Language) RIP, depending on the production environment.

The monochrome imageRUNNER ADVANCE series comes with the same broad range of finishing options as the colour imageRUNNER ADVANCE PRO series to support the growth in smaller but more complex print jobs. These options include professional punching, stapling up to 100 sheets, saddle stitching up to 20 sheets, booklet trimming and five types of folding (Z-fold, letter fold in, letter fold out, half fold and double parallel fold).

The devices have been assessed through Canon’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) product design system 10

to minimise the carbon emissions throughout its entire life from manufacture, logistics, delivery and energy consumption during use. Incorporating green technologies such as recycled plastics and bio plastics, the new series is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 30% over previous models.

The monochrome imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 series is expected to offer the lowest Total Energy Consumption in its class (TEC, as defined by ENERGY STAR®)* and complies with the RoHS directive.

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 series will be available in the UK from June.

Konica Minolta unveils breakthrough colour system at IPEX At IPEX Konica Minolta exclusively previewed the new bizhub PRESS C8000 high-speed colour digital production system. Able to produce 80 colour prints a minute, the bizhub PRESS C8000 represents a breakthrough for colour image quality and stability on long print runs.

Key to the image quality and stability for the bizhub PRESS C8000 is an entirely new eight-beam laser engine made from die cast aluminium for durability. This allows eight bit resolution for output at 1,200 by 1,200 dpi for ultra fine image quality using Konica Minolta’s patented Simitri HD (high-definition) toner. To ensure consistent colour densities through long print runs the bizhub PRESS C8000 uses an IDC (Image Density Control) sensor for real-time colour density adjustment and balance.

For the first time ever, visitors to Ipex were able to take advantage of a series of free seminars that tackled head on the main issues, threats and opportunities facing the printing industry. Each day of the exhibition, the Printers’ Profit Zone in hall 9 covered a wide range of topics based upon the findings of the comprehensive Ipex Global Print Survey.

how visitors attended the master class sessions, which proved to be both dynamic and interactive in the way they provided practical business advice on areas such as growing sales, increasing profit margins and improving cash flow. The sessions, four every day, run by Nick Devine, founder of theprintcoach.com, included headings such as ‘Lead Generation for Printers’, ‘Compensating your Sales Team’, ‘Value Based Selling’, ‘Wealth Protection’, ‘Raising Finance’, ‘Profitable Marketing’ and A ‘ ttracting Ideal Clients’.

These master class sessions were joined in the Printers’ Profit Zone by several other innovative and educational events, such as The Great Print Debates, run in association with Pira International. These free to attend debates, chaired by some of the industry’s leading figures looked for answers to questions such as, what will the printer of the future look like?

DIGITAL IMAGING So I went in early before work to avoid the melee.

I couldn’t see any crowds — was I heading in the right direction? I couldn’t find a queue, or even a helpful constable to guide me. In fact, when I got there the temporary Polling Station was closed.

Not closed because of the rush, but closed because someone had forgotten the key, or the caretaker had overslept.

Instead a hastily hand written note directed me to the Children’s Playgroup Centre round the corner. Was this an unscrupulous attempt to hijack the poll ? If so it wasn’t very sophisticated.

A series of scribbled arrows attached to the railings enabled me to find the site without the use of satellite navigation. I entered, intent to place my mark on history, stepping over the hastily rearranged toys, to face not an intimidating array of authority but with a background of bouncy castles and rocking horses, a trio of delightful ladies of a certain age who looked more like they should be serving freshly baked scones and jars of marmalade. They duly checked my name and address on the list with barely a pause in the pleasant banter of domestic gossip — not a debate of politics, not a fingerprint check or photo ID in sight— and pointed me with my slip of paper to the polling booth. This was nothing more hi-tech than an open four sided cubicle, and the only item of security in the entire building was a piece of string attached to a well worn pencil that looked like it The election day brought an amusing insight to the digital economy, writes had done as many elections as me. , but it had nothing to do with politics....

read and digest information before making a decision. Even a fax machine allowed you to do that. These days it’s common to get a phone call about an email even before you’ve opened it, and of course they want an answer…and now. The classic is the one first thing in the morning, before you’ve even fired the printers up, to see if you’ve finished the job they sent over at ten o’clock last night. You’ve got to work out how and when it’s going to be done, and balance where it will fit into the job list for the day — and that, fingers crossed, assumes all printers will be behaving themselves for the duration .

Although we are bombarded with masses of often confusing and sometimes conflicting information at election times, the decision we have to make on politicians is comparatively straight forward compared to the judgement we have to make many times a day at work. The consequences may not be quite so long term, but the immediate results can be painful.

Unhappy and impatient customers do not make for a happy constituency.

The main cause of unhappiness, as often chronicled in these columns, is the failure of technology to meet expectations, or simple human error on either side of the divide. Despite the fact that the technology was supposed to make things so much easier, every day there is evidence that it just makes them more complicated. That’s why the pencil on the end of a bit of string was much more reliable than pushing buttons and choosing options from a flashing pop-up menu. However, while voting slips can be counted by rows of individual tellers, we can’t revert to a medieval copy shop of rows of monks with quill pens duplicating biblical texts, where as soon

as possible meant some time next year.

The main causes of problems, other than mechanical unreliability of printing machines, are issues in digital files, whether documents, graphics or images, usually in how they have been created, saved or stored. These actions are almost solely in the domain of the customer, leaving the digital printer with the dilemma to solve problems or adjust features that are not entirely at his or her control.

It is very difficult to advise customers in advance when queries come in on line or on the phone, because there are always more questions you need to ask regarding knowledge of software, and sometimes many more exceptions to any rule once held certain.

In early digital days, for example, it was hoped that the Portable Document Format, the ubiquitous PDF, would be the electronic file of choice to replace the rapidly redundant hard copy. It would be a solid image in digital form — except that we now find that it’s not. It can now be created in so many alternative ways, by different software, and saved or exported with multiple options — all digital information buried within the file which may not be immediately apparent upon opening or sending to print.

Some of this buried treasure is valuable, enabling the PDF to be edited if required, for example, but it may not be needed for printing and cause the resulting file to be larger than needed, or even interfere with the printed image. Alternatively, a PDF may be of such a small compressed size that it is conveninant for web browsing, and looks fine on the screen, but is not suitable for quality printing. Although a lot of common software now allows the creation of a PDF — to avoid the old

problem of missing margins, settings and fonts — print options are not so easily defined.

Most printer RIPs will handle PDFs as a matter of course, but it is how they handle them that can be an issue. As well as hidden information contained in layers in the file to beware of, there is the simple issue that the PDF can exist both as a flexible vector file, or as a solid pixel based bitmap one, depending on how it has been created or saved.

This is where the customer knowledge and use of software is important. General experience is that they tend to use either a vector format — like Adobe’s Illustrator or InDesign, or a pixel based one like Photoshop, and not mix the two disciplines although of course an InDesign file may contain imported pixel images. Pixel-based images are resolution dependent. They are the size they are, and nothing can make them any bigger in real terms, or improve the quality of the image. You can make them smaller, and reduce the quality of the image, however if you open a PDF in Photoshop at the default screen resolution of 72 dpi — something easily done by mistake if you are in a hurry or distracted. Loss of quality, particularly with images and text, is common when laying up multiple PDF files for flyers for example, and resolution is usually the culprit.

It can also be that additional layer information may make the PDF difficult to place in a design template. Quark, for example, has been known to see an ‘invisible’ bounding box that prevents a file being centred in a picture box.

Opening the file and resaving it in this case didn’t solve the problem. Only opening it in Photoshop and saving it as a solid TIFF with clearly defined edges did the trick.

It is all ultimately dependent upon the file, and only experience will provide answers to the sort of problems that arise everyday in digital printing. You do literally learn something new every day, often by sharing experience with other CSN readers with similar history.

A similar issue came up with a PDF file that wasn’t printing in large format, when previous ones had printed fine. It had to be something buried within the file, or something in the way the information was being transmitted to the printer that was grinding the whole job to a standstill and producing gobbledygook.

After much thought and exchange of

options, one solution was again to turn the PDF into a pixel constrained one, at sufficient resolution for quality, and that cleared the log jam.

Generally for enlargement, particularly for large format printing, the wisdom would be to keep vector files in their generic format, but not all printer RIPs will read all file formats. We have been running a Roland Eco Solvent 64 inch banner printer for some months now, and its own printer interface is excellent in all aspects except that it doesn’t see unsupported file formats for direct import. It likes solid images like TIFFs and JPEGs, but nothing with any layers or links. You can get round this by using the print dialogue box in the programme itself, where you can make all the necessary printer settings in advance, and send the file direct to the printer queue. This even works, amazingly, for Powerpoint presentations which were previously a nightmare, needing to be converted to often uncertain PDFs. One thing the Roland definitely doesn’t like is 16-bit colour. I realised this was a problem quite recently as more photographic files have been coming in for large format posters, and these are professional images that have been taken as RAW files in camera and converted into 16-bit TIFFs afterwards.

Although the Roland RIP will import a 16-bit image, and even preview it, the information overload is just too much for the printer to interpret.

Photos taken and saved as JPEGs are no problem as they are only 8-bit colour — which is what our printers recognise easily. But images from RAW files, or high resolution scans may have been saved at 16-bit. The only way to find out is to open the file in Photoshop and interrogate. Some printers may handle the files without a problem — our Epson 7600 doesn’t have an issue, and our Konica 6500 didn’t flinch at the same file. The Roland, however, demanded a conversion down to 8-bit to print successfully.

More of the mysteries of bits next month when I will dig deeper into scanning versus digital photography in capturing solid images and printing them, and hopefully avoiding some painful learning curves. It’s only taken me nine years, I’m just starting to get the hang of it. Hopefully the new government won’t take so long to sort the economy out for us.

Hampshire Flag supports world’s first carbon neutral football match A leading flag manufacturer is backing a first in football by producing a giant banner to promote a unique game between teams located at opposite ends of the country.

Hampshire Flag produced the 6m x6m banner at a greatly reduced price for the world’s first carbon neutral football match between Plymouth Argyle and Newcastle.

The banner, which was manufactured from 210gsm fire retardant polyester display material, was unveiled at the game in Plymouth and played a key role in raising awareness of the game’s unique energy-saving bid.

The distance between Plymouth and Newcastle is well documented to be the longest in the football league so Argyle has teamed up with ecology project management company Carbon Life and energy consultants Independent Utilities to ensure the damage to the environment as a result of staging the game is offset through renewable

energy projects.

Mondi Russian forests certified in accordance with FSC standards

Mondi Syktyvkar announced the recent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification of all of its leased forests. The entire 2.1 million hectares of Mondi Syktyvkar’s leased forest land is now FSC certified, up from the previous 1.4 million hectares.

This achievement was communicated early March 2010 in a NEPCon report (the representative of the SmartWood program in Russia), which detailed the extended FSC-certification of Mondi Syktyvkar’s leased forests.

A total area of 731.6 thousand hectares was added to the existing forest management certification, most of which are situated in Udorsky, UstKulomsky, and Kortkerossky districts of the Republic of Komi.

Prior to FSC-certification, environmental factors were carefully considered

by Mondi Syktyvkar. In collaboration with their forestry stakeholders, they assessed the leased land to ascertain which forests were particularly important in the local ecology, confirmed their boundaries with concerned parties, prepared all the documents and materials needed, and trained both Mondi personnel and contractor-staff about the requirements of forest certification.

The Mondi wood supply chain was certified in 2006. In 2009, the supply chain certificate also incorporated FSC-controlled wood and certified pulp and paper production. Mondi Syktyvkar produces Snegurochka, the leading brand of high quality office paper in Russia, which was also certified according to FSC standards recently.

Their core products lie in the graphical overlay market — the production of the fascia panels that users of small electrical products interact with, yet rarely give any thought to their creation.

Always a reverse print to a clear substrate, these have to be robust and accurately registered and were traditionally screen printed in limited colours. Now, with their recent investment of a grand format Mimaki JFX-1631 LED UV printer, Bex are able to massively improve the creative content of their work, reduce their lead times and wow their customer base.

Bex Design’s investment in the new Mimaki came about after some extensive testing of alternative products. Commenting on his visit to Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd in August 2009 with their reseller, Granthams, Bex Design’s director, Ian Board said; “I’d trialled every machine under the sun. It had been a lengthy process to find what I wanted and I’d almost given up hope. An internet search led me to Granthams and the Mimaki printer, and it soon became apparent that LED cure was what I required.”

The benefits of LED UV technology

The cold cure technology utilised by the Mimaki JFX enables Bex Design to output to substrates that are heat sensitive, and under traditional UV curing lamps are prone to bowing and buckling — often resulting in head strikes that can be costly in terms of time, materials and potential hardware damage. The other vital facet of the solution is Mimaki’s unique flexible inkset. Produced in partnership with 3M, the flexible nature and excellent adhesion of the ink allows Bex to print, cut, hydroform and emboss to create stunning final products with many production stages removed.

Board is also impressed by the quality of the machine. “The print from other UV machines was grainy and with visible banding. Mimaki’s flexible ink took us into a whole different ball game.”

Choosing the Mimaki JFX

“The flexible ink is the holy grail for us,” said Board. “It works for almost all our applications, but what surprised me most was the quality of adhesion to other substrates. The variation of media we can print to; foam core trade work, point of sale items that are produced direct to the board; and the adhesion on foam core has been superb. When embossing the graphic overlay panels, it’s the only digital ink type that’s worked.”

Beating the ‘two shades of grey’ syndrome

Because the standard screen print model costs print jobs on the number of colours used, the norm for graphic overlay panels has been what Board refers to as ‘two shades of grey’. With his investment in the Mimaki, he intends to turn that on its head. “It was always about the quality and fine detail — we’re not interested in speed,” remarked Board. “For us, it’s bespoke, low volume work where quality is paramount.”

Active promotion of how their capabilities have improved is leading Bex’s marketing. Gone are the days where unexciting graphics ruled the roost. For the same price, his customers can have highly creative multi colour overlays that incorporate their true logo, a build up of imagery, drop shadows and so on. “It doesn’t matter how it’s achieved,” says Board, “It’s the potential for improving their product. The swaying factor in our investment was that I knew I could sell this very quickly.”

Getting bigger, not just better

“The Mimaki JFX has added a few strings to our bow,” Board continues, “We’re really pushing the larger format rigid work. By supplying our existing customers with new products, they can consolidate their supplier base — plus it protects our position too.”

Bex were previously constrained by 60” x 40” screen printing in four colours — but now can offer much larger short run work with their JFX. Point of sale onto foam board can then be routed on one of their two machines, and harking back again to the advantages of the cold cure technology employed by the Mimaki, Board laughs; “It’s a lovely machine to print the foamboard with, because you’re not cooking it! The UV cold cure lets us produce a fine tonal image that won’t scuff or mark and is stable under the lamp. Other UV printers we’ve tried gave us warped ends, with the head often hitting the substrate — we’ve had none of that with the JFX.” Board goes on to mention the support and advice that he’s received from Hybrid and Granthams; “They both know the industry inside out, and the level of service — be it next day ink deliveries or technical support has been professional and a cut above what I’ve experienced before.”

Full service

In spite of their substantial investment in digital, Bex Design still maintain an impressive screen print capability with manual and semi automatic machines producing volume work that still benefits from a screen printed finish. In addition to their printing capabilities, Bex also offer a manufacturing skill too, as Board points out; “We’re not just a print house — we try and do as much as we can for the client.”

Coupled to their investment in the big flatbed, Board took the opportunity to replace an existing mild solvent printer with one of Mimaki’s award winning CJV30 printer / cutter models. “The biggest amount of work for the CJV30 is sequential numbering jobs that we output through Sign lab — it’s something else we can offer the client that we couldn’t do previously.”

Bex take advantage of the powered take-up unit on the Mimaki and with the machine sited in their design studio, they print over night and cut in the morning.

“There’s no noise, it runs in the studio over night, and when I come in the morning — it’s made me money while I’m not here. I love it!” said Board. “The improvement over the other machine is the take-up unit and the light cyan and magenta inks and we’ve also got the white if we need it too.”

Keeping a creative edge

Bex Design’s new website (www.bexdesign.co.uk) has examples of their current work, news pages and a blog — all designed to entice new customers into investing in digital print. Board’s vision is further expansion; “We’ve come through a difficult year. Investing in two new machines has given us a head start on our competitors, and that was the mindset we had for 2009. Get through it, survive — or even thrive as we have done. My dream is further digital expansion — including another Mimaki this year. We’ve got a creative edge that I want to keep for as long as possible.”

Fast joke Sitting on the side of the motorway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 25 MPH. He thinks to himself, this driver is just as dangerous as a speeder! So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.

Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies — two in the front seat and three in the back — wide eyed and white as ghosts.

The driver, obviously confused, says to him, Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?

READERS’ SCRIBES So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She said, “That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me” and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She said, “You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.”

And that’s when the fight started...

My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels.

She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’ I said, ‘Dust.’

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.

She said, “I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds.” So without expense spared I bought her a set of scales.

The cars are racing down the highway – 60, 70, 80, 90 miles an hour. Finally, as his speedometer passes 100, the guy realises he can’t outrun the police so he gives up and pulls over to the curb.

The police officer gets out of his cruiser and approaches the car. He leans down and says “Listen mister, I’ve had a really lousy day, and I just want to go home. Give me a good excuse and I’ll let you go.”

The man thought for a moment and said, “Three weeks ago my wife ran off with a police officer. When I saw your cruiser in my rear view mirror I thought you were that officer and you were trying to give her back to me!”

The clerk replied, “Your mother said that you would pay for her.”

A DROP IN SALARY PERHAPS A man came home from work one day to find his wife sitting on the front porch with her bags packed. He asked her where she was going and she replied “I’m going to London.”

He questioned her as to why she was going and she told him “I just found out that I can make £400 a night doing what I give you for free”.

He pondered that then went into the house and packed his bags and returned to the porch and with his wife. She said “And just where do you think you’re going?”
