yes we Caan! draGOns’ Den star James Caan has thrown his weight behind a new campaign aimed at boosting the fortunes of small business across the UK. The celebrated entrepreneur has pledged his support for Get Britain Trading – a campaign which was recently launched by the Forum of Private Business to highlight the huge contribution smaller businesses make to the economy. The Forum, which is a not for profit support organisation for smaller firms, is also using Get Britain Trading to call on the Government to tackle persistent problems affecting small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) including late payment, access to finance and excessive red tape. Additionally, Get Britain Trading aims to spread positivity and business confidence in order to help pull the UK out of the economic doldrums – and this is what prolific investor and serial entrepreneur James says secured his backing for the campaign. He said: “Sustainable economic recovery in the UK can ultimately be achieved by boosting and

supporting our small and medium sized businesses. Those businesses that have survived the recession have proven their strength and durability and I believe that with the right support, many of them could be very successful indeed. “I have seen a great deal of businesses recently that have made cuts to survive the recession and have now stagnated in their growth. It is the responsibility of the Government and also the larger business community to support these businesses to help them return to growth and Get Britain Trading.” James, who regularly invests, advises and helps to grow SMEs, added: “I hope that Get Britain Trading will continue to raise awareness of the issues that small firms face and that the Government will take further action to enable small businesses to grow for the benefit of Britain’s economy. “The entrepreneurial spirit in Britain has never been more alive than now. Despite having to struggle through the recent recession, we British remain innovative, commercially

minded and motivated to be successful. Small businesses who have survived the hardships of the recession with their businesses intact will not only have learned priceless lessons about the true nature of their business but have also proven their underlying viability. The challenge that many of them now face is no longer survival, but growth.” He also had the following advice for small businesses following the Forum’s campaign: “Having made it through the recession, many UK business owners are now experts at survival, but not necessarily growth. There are hundreds of snippets of advice that I won’t presume to give here since useful advice is usually specific to an individual business. “What I will say instead is that businesses that are not growing need to access the right senior support at the executive level. A good recipe for growth is the right mix of strategic direction, structuring for scalability, mentoring, access to networks, access to finance, sales prowess and succession planning. Business should seek out those experienced

and the award goes to… sTaFF at The Wild Group are basking in the warm glow of success after being announced as winners at the prestigious Sign & Digital Awards. The Southampton based branding specialists took the top prize in the Best Textile Print category at the ceremony held at the National Motorcycle Museum. ‘Wow, what a journey - it’s amazing just to be nominated let alone be a winner,’ said The Wild Group’s delighted managing director Matt Straker. ‘It hasn’t really sunk in yet but it’s awesome to be recognised for all the hard work and impressive projects we’ve worked on over the years. It makes it all worthwhile and we’re even more hungry for the next big project.’ The Wild Group’s award winning creation was a digitally printed branded sail that was used by 20th Century Fox as part of its worldwide promotional campaign for the hit film Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The company overcame competition from 65 other entries to take the top prize at the April event. ‘We are now an award winning company - that carries a lot of kudos and we’re looking forward to making the most of it,’ added Matt Straker. The company that started life in a spare bedroom now has nine full time employees and a growing worldwide reputation, notably in the marine and events sectors. Its many high profile projects include producing full branding for Tracy Edwards’ ground-breaking round the world record attempt on the 92ft catamaran Royal & Sun Alliance, the eye-catching graphics for solo sailor Alex Thomson’s Hugo Boss, and being the sole supplier of hull and sail branding for the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. www.wildgroup.co.uk, www.wildboatnames.com

individuals that can advise, assist and support in these areas.” Commenting on receiving James’ backing, the Forum’s Head of Campaigns, Jane Bennett, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have someone with James’ profile, experience and knowledge lend their support to Get Britain Trading. As someone who has started, invested in and grown countless small businesses, James is one of the best qualified people imaginable to back the campaign and endorse its aim of boosting the fortunes of Britain’s vital SME sector. “However we still need the support of ordinary business owners across the UK if we are to make the campaign a success so please visit the Get Britain Trading website – www.getbritaintrading.co.uk– and sign our pledge!” As part of the Get Britain Trading campaign, the Forum is currently in the process of contacting every UK MP individually in order to raise awareness of the issues facing smaller firms in their constituencies. www.fpb.org

Johnson’s legacy leaves its mark as BPIF CEO steps down Michael Johnson stepped down as Chief Executive of the BPIF on 31st May after ten years at the organisation’s helm. Johnson’s tenure has seen huge changes in the printing industry, with the BPIF re-engineered under his leadership as it developed new business solutions to help its member companies adapt to their changing markets. His legacy includes Vision In Print, first established in 2003 with the help of a £2.4m Government grant. Since then the BPIF’s lean manufacturing support arm has delivered over 600 process improvement programmes, trained more than 4000 people in continuous improvement techniques, and delivered average added value benefit of £127K per programme. Always keen to partner with other key stakeholders in his efforts to drive strategic change in print he worked with Unite to produce the industry’s first national partnership agreement in 2005, supported by a £250K Government grant the BPIF secured from the then DTI to undertake the pioneering Partnership at Work initiative. Although BPIF members’ views on the relevance of the national agreement have shifted somewhat since then, this agreement has been key to engaging employees and their representatives in the industry’s change agenda. Last year the BPIF produced Priorities for Print, a much applauded definitive summary of the BPIF’s lobbying priorities and actions sought from Government. Under Michael Johnson, the BPIF has fought hard to represent the interests of its members in Westminster and he has ensured that the organisation continues to punch well above

its weight. Recent successes include reforms on pre-packs, a commitment that the taxman will not pursue retrospective VAT “supply splitting” claims, engagement with the Paymaster General’s office on public procurement reforms, and the retention of print’s Climate Change Levy Rebate Scheme. Colleagues of Johnson point to his strength of vision, remarking on how he has ensured that the BPIF continually seeks to identify emerging market trends. He has made sure that the BPIF has invested in developing new business solutions to help members address these developments. Nowhere has this been more important than in relation to the BPIF’s work on cross-media, with the BPIF now helping a growing number of printing companies to become cross-media suppliers and deliver integrated marketing solutions to their clients. His focus on tackling the industry’s change agenda has not wavered even in recent times, when the BPIF’s recession hit finances have been extremely tight. The BPIF has made tough financial decisions during his time, with significant reductions in headcount proving necessary in the last three years. At the same time though, improvements in operational efficiency and cost savings he has driven through have meant that the quality of services the BPIF provides to its members remain undiminished. The BPIF has also achieved major economies of scale by partnering with other trade bodies, having managed the British Offices Supplies and Services (BOSS) Federation under an association management contract since 2007. Michael Johnson says: “I am very proud to have

played my part in the continuing evolution of our industry. But of course these achievements are not mine alone. I have had the privilege of working with the very able and diligent staff of the BPIF, an extremely talented team of people by whom this industry is very well served. I have also been fortunate in being guided and assisted by many highly committed and enlightened member company representatives, who have kept me in check and on track. I know that my successor, Kathy Woodward will continue to enjoy the same level of support. I wish Kathy, the BPIF and its member companies every success for the future.” Said Rupert Middleton, “Michael has been an outstanding Chief Executive of BPIF. His commitment has been total and he has been passionate in providing the value of Trade Associations. Always challenging business practices and organisational structure where appropriate, he has inspired new ways of thinking and has always been on the front foot when defending our industry. The BPIF is now a much respected organisation; he has done the industry proud. ” Kathy Woodward stated: “Michael has worked hard to put in place a strong team at the BPIF, and I intend to build on this with a firm focus on people development and strengthening talent within the organisation. I am also keen to ensure that we expand the BPIF’s membership, so that many more printing companies can benefit from the high calibre expertise that print’s premier trade body has to offer” For more information on the BPIF, visit: www. britishprint.com.

National Association of Paper Merchants’ celebrates 91st Annual Dinner The National Association of Paper Merchants’ (NAPM) recently held its 91st Annual Dinner at the Park Plaza Riverbank in London, with around 250 members and their guests enjoying the night’s proceedings. Outgoing NAPM President and Denmaur Independent Papers Managing Director Mike Gee outlined in his speech the current challenging trading conditions being experienced by UK paper merchants during 2010, but he also provided some healthier forecasts for 2011. The key points were: • The economy grew by 1.4% in 2010 with predictions of continued growth to 2.2% for 2011. • Total tonnage volumes for UK paper merchants declined by 5.2% on the 2009 figures. This follows on from a 9.2% decline between the 2009 and 2008 totals. • Total value of products sold through paper merchants in 2010 was 2.6%, up on 2009 with average prices in December 2010 around 14.3% higher than in December 2009. • Woodfree coated qualities saw a reduction of

only 2.1% on the previous year. • Sales of cut-sizes through merchants declined by 7.0% in volume terms in 2010 compared with 2009. It’s not all bad news however. Both the Publishing and Board sectors showed encouraging growth in 2010 with board volumes growing by 7.3% year-on-year. In addition the total level of bad debts being suffered by merchants in 2010 was 16.6% down on 2009

levels to £14.6 million. Mike also announced that the NAPM continues to be proud of the “Two Sides” initiative which was planned back in 2007 as an NAPM initiative and has now expanded across Europe, alongside the recently launched Print Power campaign. Mike closed his speech by announcing that his successor as President of the NAPM in 2012 will be Tim Elliott, Managing Director of family owned independent paper merchant group, Elliott Baxter. Michael Johnson, Chief Executive of the BPIF, responded on behalf of the guests in his speech, with a clear message for those in the room. “It is high time for a bit more optimism about the future. Print is back, the future is again looking positive. Pessimism about the decline of the printing industry just wastes time and leads to opportunities being missed. Print is a great industry with huge economic significance to UK PLC but we have to tell media buyers about the benefits of print and ensure they understand the great return on investment that print media delivers. So get out there and tell our story!” www.napm.org.uk

NEW BINDER AIDS GROWTH FOR INKSHOP PRINTING

OnE of Scotland’s most successful print company’s, Inkshop Printing, has invested in a Duplo DPB-500 perfect binder “To offer more finishing options to customers and bring more services in-house” says Managing Director Stuart Mason. Inkshop Printing, who has been previous winners of the BAPC Print Business of the Year, began the hunt for a perfect binding solution after issues with running binding inline to their digital press. “Whilst the inline perfect binding solution may be ok for functional not for pay print, it wasn’t right for us in a commercial environment. We needed our customers to believe in the quality of our products and that our books would be strongly bound,” comments Stuart. “Demand has increased over the past few years for a perfect bound finish, and we were after a solution that suited our business model. Whether it was footprint size, price or general machine features, the Duplo binder ticked all the boxes for us. For example, by notching across the spine before gluing gives a far stronger adhesion.” The DPB-500 is a single clamp perfect binder designed for the short run, on-demand market. It includes a fully automated set-up which ensures an accurate finish and reduced dependence on skilled operators. It will cope with different binding requirements using a touch screen set up to change to a different binding style or book format in seconds. The machine runs at up to 525 machine book cycles an hour. The Inkshop is using the DPB-500 binder for a range of short run book applications, including catalogues, reports and publications for a variety of different customers, in a variety of different sizes with average runs of 500 to 1,000 copies. Size format was a major consideration when looking at the binder, and they now use the machine to finish their own A4 landscape marketing catalogue advertising their print services, a format that they can only produce using the DPB-500. A major benefit for Inkshop has been the ability to offer their customers

an alternative finish to conventional stitched booklets explains Stuart. “With thick books we can now offer two alternate finishes, ‘double-wire’ booklets or perfect bound books. This has enabled us to proactively offer customers different solutions, which in turn has definitely helped us retain clients. Not forgetting the extra margins that are available with perfect bound products.” The introduction of the binder comes during extremely successful times at Inkshop Printing. The company has just announced its most successful December, January and February sales months, towards the end of the financial year which will show strong growth when compared to the previous two years. “We don’t send any finishing out now and we are in full control of our customers’ work. Stuart concludes “It doesn’t matter if the run is 1, 2 or 500 books; this is a perfect binder that is perfect for us”. www.duplouk.co.uk

PrintIT! Announces new Chairman PrOskIlls, the Sector Skills Council for the process and manufacturing industries, has announced that Tony Lock, Managing Director of Duplo UK, is the new Chairman of PrintIT!. He takes over from Wayne Barlow, Director Professional Print of Canon UK, who took on the baton from Heidelberg’s George Clarke last year. The official handover took place during the PrintIT! 2011 Awards Ceremony on the last day of Northprint 2011. “When I became Chairman of PrintIT! the printing and paper industries were still facing a tough road ahead and the PrintIT! initiative was coming under a lot of scrutiny,” says Wayne Barlow. “However, I wanted to face the challenges and stand up for what I believe is a very worthwhile cause and I felt passionately about the concept behind PrintIT!. My aim was to provide credibility and reach across all sectors of the industry for PrintIT! and the students. “Personally, it’s been a fantastic year, during which I’ve enjoyed immensely working with the PrintIT! team. Tom Bowtell, Deputy CEO of Proskills is an inspirational leader who has been a pleasure to work alongside. I’ve also been humbled during this period by the determination and drive of the students themselves, who have at times shown an almost pioneering spirit in their involvement in PrintIT! “In handing over to Tony, I know that PrintIT!’s new Chairman will bring an extremely high level of enthusiasm and energy to the task in hand, along with many fresh ideas,” says Wayne Barlow. “I’m secretly envious of him and I wish him all the very best in his new position.” Tony Lock adds: ‘It’s a privilege to be offered the role of PrintIT! Chairman and I’m delighted to be taking on this challenge. It is a challenge because PrintIT! is so important to the future of our industry. Print is under attack ... from new electronic technologies, from misleading environmental messages, from an economy that always hits print hard when times are tough. “Part of our job at PrintIT! is to demonstrate to the students of today that the print and paper industries offer exciting jobs for them tomorrow, that it is not a dying craft but remains a vital element of the marketing communications mix, and that managed correctly it is a sustainable industry that is beneficial to the environment. Print is changing drastically and while it is shrinking in some areas, it’s expanding in others, but have no doubt about it, print will always be around. “One of my initial priorities is to get the message across to UK printers, regardless of their size, that twinning with a local school provides all sorts of potential benefits – short and long term,” says Tony Lock. “This is rather a call to action - your industry needs you! The PrintIT! team will be on hand to help and there is no reason at all to have reservations. Your local school is part of the community that you serve, a potential customer for today and a source of employees for the future. Get them on board.” The twinning scheme forms an integral part of PrintIT! and involves schools being given a link (subject to availability) to a local employer in the industry such as a printer, paper manufacturer/mill or related company. The extent of the twinning can be agreed by the school and the employer and may include a visit to the school by a company representative to discuss a particular project or a visit by a class to the company’s premises. Proskills offers a PrintIT! Twinning Pack that will provide printers with all the information they need to find a local school that can become its ‘twin’. To get involved with PrintIT!, and to help promote yourself and the UK printing industry, visit www.printit.org.uk and click on the “Employers Register for Twinning” button. The PrintIT! initiative has grown significantly in recent years, and Tom Bowtell said Wayne Barlow had played a significant part in its success. “On behalf of Proskills I’d like to thank Wayne Barlow for his outstanding contribution to PrintIT! and I look forward to helping Tony Lock settle in and build on Wayne’s excellent work.’ For further information on PrintIT! log on to www.printit.org.uk or contact Katie Freeman Lea (Katie.FreemanLea@proskills.co.uk) at Proskills on 01235 432018

PaperCo challenges printers to confess their love for 9lives

PaPErCO has launched a nine week campaign to promote the reasons why printers love 9lives. It invites users to win a series of stunning limited edition posters produced on 9lives stock. To get one they must simply e-mail 9lives@paperco.co.uk and complete the sentence “I love 9lives......” The best entries will be highlighted on the brand’s microsite, www.9livespaper.co.uk The first weeks of the campaign focus on the environmental credentials of this FSC certified range which features a high level of post consumer waste (55%, 80% or 100% depending on the stock chosen). Up to 35% less energy and 55% less water is used the manufacture of recycled paper. On the web site www.9livespaper.co.uk printers can use an environmental calculator to work out how much they can reduce the environmental impact with these papers and download a statement detailing the exact savings. “End users are increasingly demanding evidence of the environmental credentials of their print supplier and the products and processes used to produce their job,” says Charles Eaton, head of marketing for PaperCo. “This environmental statement can be added to any printed documents, such as annual reports, brochures, CSR documents etc. demonstrating to stakeholders that a conscious effort has been made to choose a recycled stock and, as a result, reduced the amount of resources used. It will also be useful for printers working towards or needing to maintain their ISO 14001 environmental accreditation.” Other key features of 9lives including its look, feel, printability and versatility will be revealed over the following weeks of the campaign. PaperCo’s own brand 9lives range from PaperCo includes: 9lives Offset, 9lives 80, 9lives 55, 9lives Preprint and 9lives Digital. These three apps from Adobe were developed using the Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) to demonstrate the potential for new interaction between Photoshop and tablet devices. Adobe Colour Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop unite the fun and interactive experience of touch devices with the power and precision of Photoshop by enabling users to create custom colour swatches, paint directly on screen and drive popular Photoshop tools from tablet devices. These applications take advantage of the iPad’s touch screen for a truly immersive, tactile, on the go experience, and expand upon inroads made by Adobe in the mobile and tablet market initiated with Photoshop Express, Adobe Ideas and Adobe Connect Mobile. Current Photoshop CS5 owners

Initial industry feedback for the Photoshop Touch applications has been overwhelmingly positive; in a First Look review by Macworld, Lesa Snider says that “By having nothing between you and your artwork, you can focus on creating in the purest sense.” Snider also notes the excitement for the new Photoshop Touch SDK, saying, “I have no doubt developers will be burning the midnight oil to push the envelope of this new technology and create other useful Photoshop integrated apps.” The Photoshop Touch SDK makes development possible on numerous devices, including iOS, Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. Utilising the SDK, developers will have wide access to Photoshop functionality with the freedom to innovate and create new apps or add capabilities to existing ones. The media features solvent free adhesive and eliminates any halogen related disposal concerns, allowing users to print at a high quality (up to 1200 x 1200dpi) with a smaller environmental footprint. Mimaki’s outdoor durable, integrated inkjet printer/cutter; the CJV30 Series, uses Mimaki’s ES3 eco-solvent inks on self adhesive non-PVC media from MACtac. This combination creates a more environmentally friendly printing solution for producing superior quality outdoor and indoor signs such as window graphics, posters, and labels. The Mimaki CJV30 Series consumes relatively little ink and requires a very small amount of media heating which in turn, results in low energy consumption. Visitors to the stand were also able to see almost the whole portfolio of

Mimaki’s printers and cutters. The brand new JV34-260, which can be run with aqueous dye sublimation inks for transfer printing to eco-friendly polyester, or with solvent inks for outdoor durable banner output, was showcased in the latter configuration, showing its high quality printing capabilities and productive speeds. Alongside this, Mimaki’s latest UV innovations was on display, including the recently launched JFX-1631plus flatbed printer which can print 80% faster than its predecessor. The revolutionary Mimaki UJF-3042 compact tabletop UV LED printer, now capable of printing with highly creative clear ink, was also on the Mimaki stand and will demonstrate a variety of applications, such as the creation of small signs and promotional products. Last but not least; textile professionals amongst the visitors expierienced an appealing overview of Mimaki’s digital printing solutions for the soft signage and fashion industries, with the super wide JV5-320DS, as well as the new high capacity Tx400-1800D and Tx400-1800B, reinforcing Mimaki’s peerless heritage in the textile printing market. The Tx400-1800B featured a newly developed adhesive belt carrier system and printed with reactive ink during the show. With over 13 years experience producing market leading textile inkjet printers, the latest offerings deliver a raft of environmentally friendly production features, coupled to impressive print speeds and Mimaki’s typical high build and output quality. Roland’s first hybrid UV-curable printer FOllOWInG the successful adoption of the VersaUV LEC-330 and LEC-540 UV-curable machines, Roland DG has incorporated the same ground breaking technology into its first wide format hybrid printer. Designated the VersaUV LEJ-640, this new roll fed and flat bed solution is designed to print to flexible and rigid materials and incorporates both white and clear varnish to its CMYK ink set for highly visual and tactile finishes. The Roland VersaUV LEJ-640 has a maximum printing width of 1.625m and can work with coated and uncoated rigid substrates up to 13mm in thickness. Its versatility also enables it to print to flexible roll-fed materials, with fast change over from one media type to another. A maximum resolution of 1400 x 1400 dpi means that the VersaUV LEJ-640 can output extremely fine dot quality. The machine’s ability to incorporate white ink and clear varnish makes it ideal for the production of short run packaging and prototypes as well as a vast range of innovative signs and displays. The LEJ-640 is ventilation ready, featuring a hood for easy connection with an air filtration system. The VOC-free inks and LED curing combine to make the VersaUV LEJ-640 ideal for users who want to integrate UVcurable production into their existing facilities without having to add special ventilation and ducting. The machine’s LED curing technology means it can be used in conjunction with delicate materials which, traditionally, have been difficult to cure efficiently. Additionally, the long life lamps need no warm up time, making them cost efficient to use and cool to the touch, leading to a safe printing environment. Prints produced on the VersaUV LEJ-640 are instantly dry and ready for finishing as soon as they have been cured, enabling users to shorten their production time where lamination is required. Roland’s Eco-UV inks feature flexible properties so that there is no flaking or cracking, even on the finest materials. The printer’s white ink circulation system is designed to prevent the pigment from settling, allowing for unattended production. This new machine incorporates advanced features which ensure fast throughput and an efficient production workflow, yet set-up and its use is straightforward and easy, even for first time operators. The VersaUV LEJ-640 has a specially designed media securing mechanism to hold flat substrates in place, supporting even the thickest of materials, and enabling layered clear varnish to be applied accurately for highly visual, tactile and textured finishes. Roland’s established Eco-UV inks are renowned for their adhesion and tough finishes, complemented by their vivid and accurate colours. The inclusion of a highly opaque white makes the machine ideal for printing onto non-white and transparent materials, such as corrugateds and window films, adding new levels of versatility to UV-curable production on a wide format platform. The inclusion of Roland’s clear varnish, which has already proved to be hugely successful in its VersaUV LEC duo of machines, enables users to produce unusual and creative textures on all materials. These can be created by the user or selected from the Roland Texture Library which is included in Roland’s easy to use VersaWorks RIP software, supplied with every machine. Available in a choice of versions with CMYK plus white and clear varnish, CMYK plus two channels of white, or CMYK plus two channels of clear, the VersaUV LEJ-640 also incorporates Roland OnSupport for remote diagnostics. At an attractive price of £45,999 the LEJ-640 also comes with the company’s comprehensive Roland DG Care Service Agreement, and this is complemented by training courses at The Roland Academy which help users develop innovative and profitable markets for their investments. Canon’s two new large format printers CanOn UK has launched two new high speed colour large format printers – the 24 inch imagePROGRAF iPF6300S and 44 inch imagePROGRAF iPF8300S. Using Canon’s 8-colour LUCIA EX pigment ink system to deliver outstanding image quality, the two new models provide the perfect balance between quality, productivity and total cost of ownership (TCO), making them ideal for the production, proofing, photographic and in-house print markets. The imagePROGRAF iPF6300S, successor to the iPF6000S, and the imagePROGRAF iPF8300S have been developed to complement Canon’s large format printer range, particularly the imagePROGRAF iPF6300, iPF6350, iPF8300 and iPF8000S. In addition to the superb black reproduction, wide colour gamut and exceptional scratch resistance that were acclaimed in the iPF6300, iPF6350 and iPF8300, the two new models feature higher print speeds and broad workflow compatibility, as well as lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO). A wider colour gamut enables the new models to be used in applications that require greater precision, while a colour profile designed for poster production gives them an advantage in producing vivid, eyecatching graphics. Productivity is improved through a new mirrored nozzle layout and the option to print in ‘Fast’ mode, which enables the print speed to be as much as doubled, while still maintaining a level of print quality that rivals that in standard mode. This is a major advantage when producing output such as posters and point of sale (POS) display items, where turnaround is time critical. The printers also feature ‘Proof’, ‘Image’ and ‘Economy’ modes that enable the user to decide what level of image quality they need when printing. ‘Proof’

mode produces sharper text and lines, making it ideal for high precision proof printing, while ‘Image’ mode enables high precision printing of text and lines without a reduction in speed, making it a good choice for users for whom placement accuracy is less important than speed. ‘Economy’ mode reduces ink consumption by almost 50%, making it convenient for producing posters or checking layouts during test printing. The new models are compatible with a broad range of major RIPs, enabling users to integrate them into their existing workflows. Both models feature a 160GB built-in Hard Disk Drive, which enables storage of large print jobs that can be easily accessed from the printer’s user friendly LCD panel. Productivity is further improved by Gigabit Ethernet compatibility, enabling fast data transfer, even for data heavy files or high volume print jobs. www.canon.co.uk

Online CSMA Training

We introduced the Home Training Initiative package last month and the editor liked the idea so much he enrolled his own daughter to test the system. Four weeks on, how is Becky finding the course ?

O

nE OF ThE big problems for a busy Copy Shop is training staff for some of the technical skills needed to design and print customer’s projects. There just is limited time in the working day, interrupted by phone calls, urgent emails, and oh yes, customers at the counter. Certainly not many businesses could afford to have a key member of staff away from the workface for training The beauty of HTi is that it can fit around the working day, or be spread over several days. The average course lesson lasts two to three hours, but is split into sections, of an average ten minutes each. The trainee logs into the website, selects the course and lesson, and follows the easy to understand instructions on the screen. The site is truely interactive, with each step guided and illlustrated with help arrows and notes. It is really user friendly, even for those who normally shy away from IT For a generation brought up on video games rather than books, this is the perfect teaching tool, and instead of trying to test you, it’s actually trying to help. Mistakes are gently corrected with popups and tips, and if unsure, you can go back and try again until you are completely happy. Each section has a particular task, and when completed there are questions to answer that show you have fully understood the process. Progress can also be monitored across the course so the boss, in this case dad, can check it’s all worthwhile.

There are dozens of courses to chose from including all of the many Microsoft Office and home programmes, as well as more advanced design packages like Adobe Photoshop, In Design or Illustrator. The aim is to give a good overall grounding in operating the various programmes, unlike most staff training which involves being dropped in at the sharp end with a challenge. The problem with

the latter is that you learn to do a few things, but not all well. The computer is infinitely patient, and doesn’t mind how often it repeats itself. The course is not time limited, and can be stopped and started as daily demands require. So you can nip off and serve a customer or answer the phone and still pick up where you left off.HTi is an affordable and convenient solution in the workplace. Full list of courses available as a PDF on request from training@csmaservices.co.uk

Print Show Success

Armed with a notebook, camera and sat-nav, (to make up for my dire sense of direction), I headed off to Harrogate to find out if the new and improved Northprint really was just that. CSN Northern correspondent Vanessa Burrows reports back from Northprint

M

anufacturers, distributors and print service providers shared the Harrogate International Centre and this year Northprint also hosted the sixth PrintIT! awards which took place in the centre’s Royal Hall, proudly demonstrating how the industry supports and honours the work and achievements of the finalist students. This award show was, for me, one of the highlights of Northprint as I was attending the PrintIT! awards on behalf of CSN. Not for the fact that I had to go on stage and have my photo taken, as I would usually add to the comedy value at these things and fall down the stairs -thankfully my heels kept steady this time, but for witnessing some fantastic work by both students and the

businesses that support them. CSN are proud to be part of such an amazing scheme, which brings the print industry together to incentivise, and encourage the younger

generation into considering a career in this print industry. When you’ve been involved in the industry for a number of years it re-awakens your curiosity and opens your eyes to how exciting and challenging our industry really is. This year also saw Wayne Barlow, Professional Print Channel Director, Canon UK hand over the reins of his current position of PrintIT! Chairman to Tony Lock, Managing Director of Duplo UK. The winners are listed here and CSN congratulate all the students that took part in this year’s scheme! Overall Winner: PrintIT! 2011 Nur Nurmahomed from Beauchamp College, Leicestershire Best Wall Poster (in association with The Print Business, Print Business Media) Sarah Hasell, Bethany Harverson and Douglas McCardle, St John’s School, Cyprus (MoD school) Best Free Design (in association with Image Reports, St John Patrick) Madeleine Beyer, Wycombe High School for Girls, Buckinghamshire Most Innovative & Creative Concept (in association with PrintWeek, Haymarket Publishing) Precious Salazar, Kirkbie Kendall School, Cumbria Best Understanding of Printing Techniques (in association with PJ, Cullum Publishing) Jennifer Nash, Steyning Grammar, West Sussex Best Use of Materials (in association with Screen Process & Digital Imaging, Datateam Business Media Cledwyn Landon, Dene Magna Community School, Gloucestershire Best understanding of Environmental

UMG UK Ltd were undoubtedly one of the busiest stands at the show due to the launch of their new coaters and cutters including the AeroCut and U-Coater systems by Uchida. At some points during the shows there were three to four different groups of visitors watching the same demonstrations at a time! Speaking to UMG Director Tony Hills at the very end of the show he was delighted with the sales and leads they received and was grateful to all who took time out to visit them. Dumor! UK were new to Northprint in every sense of the word. As a new company that were launching a new range of entry level, post-press kit to the market, the UK arm of Dumor! UK was formed only weeks prior to Northprint by Paul Manners and IFS’ Bryan Goodwin and Tony Hard. The products included perfect binders, guillotine

and pouch laminators to simplify the digital print finishing process. Northprint was used as the official launch pad for GBC’s new automatic document feeder for their popular 620os laminator - showing the flexibility and performance of the feeder which

boasts consistent, pile height registration, multiple belt-feed system, adjustable vacuum pick-up and air-blast separation. GBC also used the show to gauge feedback and reaction to a prototype of an upgrade to their successful Magnapunch product, with a view for 19

production and availability this month. Swiss based Multigraf were exhibiting for the first time at Northprint with the newest addition to their Eurofold range; the Touchline CF375. This nifty little machine incorporates…wait for it… ‘flying-crease technology’ – a cracking turn of phrase which basically means it folds and creases simultaneously. Perfectly suited to the finishing market and with a small footprint for businesses of all sizes, it is available from this month and is sold through Duplo, Multigraf’s UK agents. Through a concentrated marketing push the stand saw over 30 dealers wanting demonstrations and details on this, and other Multigraf post-press products. Tech-ni-Fold were exhibiting all of their Creasestream products for the first time in the UK and they were delighted with the success they had at the show. The new CS Plus model is so new in fact, production doesn’t start until late summer this year, but attending Northprint gave them the opportunity to gather interest on the new features and was so positive they have already received pre-orders! Northprint also attracted businesses from different ends of the print industry spectrum, such as Midlands based Tecnico Solutions. First time exhibitors at Northprint their business specialising in the supply of new and used equipment to the digital print and mailing sector, found the show was ideally placed to get them in front of their core audience. Richard Ogando, one of the partners, says, “We have had a steady flow of interest throughout the show and have found the networking opportunities.” Mondi launched their new range of digital papers and were extremely pleased with their first time at Northprint. Grafityp were also newcomers to the Northprint experience, showcasing the Roland VersaCAMM range. Sales Director Neil Stevenson said, “We’re genuinely surprised and

pleased by the wide range of industries Northprint has attracted.” As a staunch supporter of Northprint over the years, digital print finishing specialists Terry Cooper Services were delighted with sales as a result of exhibiting at Northprint. TCS are exclusive UK agents for CP Bourg digital print finishing systems and on the first day were able to secure a deal after providing a full demonstration of the BB3002 Binder and CMT130 trimmer system. Dean Stayne, Sales Manager says. “Northprint always attracts quality leads and provides us with a great opportunity to demonstrate these systems to a

larger audience.” Duplo presented their Duetta range to visitors and also took a slightly different approach to attracting visitors to their stand by using the Northprint VIP Programme, pre-registration and adding a hospitality package for select clients. Result? A successful few days. The main buzz around the stand however was Managing Director, Tony Lock’s new appointment as Chairman of the PrintIT! scheme. Finally Iain Bullock, MD of Renz (UK) Ltd told us why they exhibit year after year, “Our main aim at trade shows is to wholeheartedly support

Suffice to say Northprint was also packed with many free visitor features and attractions including profitability workshops, case studies and industry debates in the Printers Profit Zone, financial advice from the BPIF and presentations from industry experts in the Litho Technology Theatre.

And relax…. There were many other attractions at Northprint that I didn’t manage to see and people I didn’t manage to speak to. My apologies and excuse? Well, 3-inch heels only give your legs the ‘appearance’ of being longer – sadly mine are still

The future venue of Northprint however is still undecided. An announcement was made during the show that Northprint 2013 show could be held in Manchester. IIR Exhibitions are obviously looking to the future of many more successful Northprint shows and feel a change of venue may help breathe new life into the perception of this longstanding show. As we know, the Devil really is in the detail and the reaction of exhibitors and their ROI will tell if such a big change is needed. Wherever printers and industry exhibitors gather watch out for one of your CSN roving reporters.

The Domesday Scenario

The taking and keeping of accurate records is not new, but some of the issues surrounding digital archiving are. Martin Christie writes…

N

early a thousand years ago, Duke William of Normandy seized the English crown and territories, defeating the then Saxon rulers at Hastings. William the Conqueror, as he became, won the battle with superior use of the technology he had available. His mobile units – men on horses – outran the mainly pedestrian defenders, and his guided missiles – arrows – finished them off. William’s archers fired high into the air so they descended in a deadly rain from above, rather than bounce ineffectually off the Saxon’s shield wall. This was particularly unfortunate for anyone who happened to be looking up at the time, including as legend has it, the only recently crowned Harold, who lost both his eye and his kingdom as a result. The battle, and events leading up to it were painstakingly recreated, albeit with a blatant Norman political spin, on a state of the art eleventh century recording device – a tapestry. It may not be the most accurate historical record but all 224 feet of it are still viewable in its hometown of Bayeux. Some years later, when he was comfortably in control of the whole country, William decided it was a good idea to create an inventory of everything he owned – or at least laid claim to – and thus began a great census of who owned what, and what it was worth. Of course the main idea was not for academic study, but to see what wealth could be extracted from whom in taxes. The Domesday book, as it became known, was titled as a complete record from which there could be no appeal – a final, biblical type judgement. Remarkably, like the tapestry, the sheepskin parchment pages survive to this day and can be read if you have a working knowledge of Latin. A mere twenty five years ago – a blink in the eye of history – the BBC set out to create its own digital Domesday Book to commemorate the nine hundredth anniversary of the original. Working with Acorn Computers, Philips and Logica, it was an initiative to capture for archive a snapshot of life in Britain in the eighties. More than a million people participated in contributing images and information they thought would be of interest to people viewing them in hundreds of years to come.

Sadly within two decades the 12 inch discs that the information was stored on, and the BBC Master Micro computer used to play them had become obsolete, and the archives risked being lost forever. It’s a rather salutory lesson in the potential fragility of modern technology, and the temporary nature of digital information. Fortunately for those interested in the 1980s, and unfortunately for those who prefer to forget them, with a little assistance from the National Computer Musuem at Blectchley Park, the records have been restored and re-mastered so they can be viewed by current technology in the form of a flash player. Whether they will last another ten years without further restorative surgery remains to be seen, but they are currently viewable on the BBC website. We are all too well aware that we may have old hard copies of artwork in storage that are still usable, but can have a current disc or drive that is unreadable. This is an issue, not only of the preservation of important files, but actually raises the matter of the duty of care of customer’s property. Like many matters the speed of development of the technology has long overtaken any hard and fast rules, or long term definite solutions. The safest thing seems to be to save lots of copies in lots of places, but this is hardly practical for all files, and further expands the problem of the actual storage of multiplying millions of digital information, let alone retrieving it when needed. As ever, the problems are ahead of the solutions. You would struggle to lose something as big

as the Bayeux Tapestry even in a very cluttered copy shop, but a digital file, however large in relative terms is but a blink on the monitor, and easily missed. The entire contents of the original Domesday Book could be compressed into one, multipage PDF, and just as easily consigned to the waste basket. We have looked at archiving solutions before, and I particularly favour Extensis Portfolio which generates a thumbnail for convenient viewing, as well as background cataloging, but any system is subject to the preferences of the operator. What might be a logical storage system for one person, might not be for another. And then there is still the major issue of where to store all this information where it will be safe for future use. Does the digital print shop need banks of servers to replace the old filing cabinets, and just how far do we need to go to preserve customers records? They seem to put their faith currently in increasingly massive capacity but tiny sized memory sticks, stuffed carelessly into pockets and purses, alongside mobile phones, ipods and all manner of electrical gadgets, as well as the odd sticky sweet. We have a growing collection box of lost souls – memory sticks that have been abandoned carelessly by their owners. Sometimes they have house keys attached with cuddly toys, and other treasured items. At least they are likely to be reclaimed. But if the customer is so reckless with his or her possessions, how can they expect the copy shop to look after their interests. Where our

professional liability lies, however, is something of a grey area to say the least. From the conservation of digital files to the right of ownership is but a small step in real terms, and the government has been called upon to make alterations to the Digital Economy Bill, passed last year, in an effort to relax restrictive copyright laws. Designed three centuries ago to protect invention and encourage innovation, they have been rapidly overtaken by the pace of information technology, whereby both images and information can be transmitted around the world instantly and at no real cost. When publication and reproduction was more laborious, expensive and time consuming, it was relatively easy to control. The very nature of communication by the internet, and the transfer of digitally stored files, makes supervision virtually impossible unless governments resort to the type of electronic blocking and jamming practised selectively by countries like China, and at the copy shop counter, monitoring copyright is almost completely impractical. With a few exceptions – as when a sharp witted Surrey operative spotted that the man from the Mclaren F1 team just might not have the right to copy the plans of the latest Ferrari – checking the ownership of digital files is not an option unless they are blatantly watermarked, or physically locked. The widespread use of Google as a search engine for images, and of social networking sites like Facebook as an exchange of them, drives a coach and horses through any restrictive legislation. The man from Google says he would never have

v i v i d.

been able to launch his global phenomenon if he had been based in the UK. In fact, operating on the spirit of the internet that anything in the public domain should be free for all, the majority of modern users certainly assume that the content is free to use. Most Facebook users probably care more about who has just eaten a bagel, than its operating policy, but it managed to cause controversy in trying to push unlimited ownership rights. It still retains a licence agreement which all users have to sign up to but never read, which allows Facebook to make its own use of any content uploaded regardless of actual ownership. The copyright issue on downloaded material has tended to be dominated by the music industry which has obviously lost massive sales of hard copy material to the internet, and there on to copies transferred electronically. But then copyright of a particular musician or record company is a fairly straightforward matter. Who owns rights to an image or a piece of writing is not. The intention of updating legislation was to allow the use of potentially copyrighted material for private, non profit use, while still retaining a penalty for commercial reproduction. But where does personal use began and end and who is going to police it? The new recommendations include the formation of a Digital Copyright Exchange by the end of 2012 to act as a “one-stop shop” to make it easier to get clearance for the use of copyrighted content. “This will make it easier for rights owners, small and large, to sell licences for their work and for others to buy them,” argues a current report.

That still means the onus is on the owner of the copyright to protect his interests, and on the publisher to at least seek to check ownership. I think both the horses and the coach will be a long way down the road before the stable door is closed. Like the Duke of Normandy nine centuries ago, another royal William had a date in Westminster more recently, and it would be hard to estimate how many million digital images were taken of the happy event, let alone how many will end up being used on some memorabilia or other, for private or public use. Pictures would have been spread around the world long before the happy couple left the palace balcony. In the last ten years digital photography, and the capture of images of and by anybody and the ability to transmit them instantly at reasonably quality has transformed all our expectations. We expect to see things instantly, and not be bothered by the inconvenience of whether we have the right to view them, or even reproduce them. After all, we have, in the same period, meekly accepted that we ourselves will be photographed, filmed, or scanned many times a day going about our normal business, and the images viewed and stored by any number of unknown operatives, with no public supervision or right to review. That is deemed to be in the national interest. It would seem that in the interest of business we are to be expected to turn a blind eye to all but the most obvious infringements of copyright. I don’t think William the first would have taken too kindly to his face being on a mug!

FSC accreditation for Everyday 75gsm grade International Paper has announced that its HP Everyday Paper 75gsm A4 grade is now available with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation. The grade is manufactured at International Paper’s Brazilian paper mills, using virgin wood fibre from sustainable forests. International Paper’s paper mills are the best in class in terms of environmental performance. The HP Everyday Papers range is sold exclusively in the Office Papers re-seller channel through national paper merchant, The Robert Horne Group. The HP Everyday Papers range is the perfect match for use with HP original inks and toners, enabling end users to get the best results out of their printers. What’s more, due to its high quality and performance standards, HP Papers perform right the first time and benefit from the latest innovations available in today’s paper industry. The HP Everyday Papers range was the first among office papers worldwide to carry ColorLok Technology.

The range covers all office printing applications, from single to full colour printing on both laser and inkjet printers. Robert Horne Group has the full range of HP Colour Laser available in weights from 90gsm – 300 gsm. Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “We think that having FSC certification available within such a well know brand name as HP Everyday will further assist our customers to make the right choice for their preferred paper brand. All products in the HP Everyday Papers range give the consumer both a choice of grade and environmental accreditation.” As a further endorsement of its environmental performance, the HP Everyday Papers range is also PEFC certified. Several products in the range also offer ColorLok Technology and the EU Eco-Flower environmental accreditation. The HP Everyday Paper’s range’s high environmental credentials were further underlined earlier last year, when the company launched new packaging for the range. The new packaging

Paper by Nature Association joins Two Sides campaign Paper by Nature is an Association which was created in 2008 to offer a single European reference for eco-responsible converted paper products. Until now, no European label existed for converted paper products. Paper by Nature is the only pan-European label dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of converted paper products – from wood processing through paper manufacturing to its conversion into office products. The Paper by Nature Association was initiated by key European organisations from the paper industry. It was created by two professional associations – the FEPE (European Envelope Manufacturers Association) and the MECSEA (Manufacturers of Educational and Commercial Stationery European Association) - which represent around 90% of office products paper converters in Europe. They have been joined by paper manufacturers such as Stora Enso, Arjowiggins, UPM Kymmene, as well as converters: Bong Ljungdahl AB, La Couronne, Groupe GPV, Groupe Hamelin, Fast Treillet, Victor Stationery, etc. The Paper by Nature label applies to converted paper products made of paper, paperboard or paper based substrate like envelopes, notebooks, drawing paper, pads, filing products and much more. It ensures that the product fulfils demanding ecological criteria regarding not only the substrate (paper or cardboard) but also the converting and printing processes used for manufacturing it. Paper by Nature provides consumers with an Ecolabel incorporating the best environmental practices in Europe today (FSC, PEFC, EU Flower, Blue Angel, and ISO 14001). The Paper by Nature label streamlines these different standards into a single label. It thus becomes the first clear and trustworthy reference for European consumers of converted paper products, covering the whole value chain. The Paper by Nature label is awarded and verified by a recognised independent certification body: Bureau VERITAS whom audits the applicant’s products according to Ecolabel Criteria and Auditing Rules. A strict certification process is implemented, including an initial certification audit, an annual follow-up audit, a re-certification every 3 years and the

carries environmental certification more predominantly on the rear panel, supporting and endorsing HP’s Environmental Paper Policy (EPP). This provides information and environmental facts surrounding forest certification, recycling, renewable energy and sustainability. delivery of a license number, stamped on each certified product. Gauthier Tyrel de Poix, President of the Board of the Paper by Nature Association, declared “We are very excited about joining Two Sides, as we really share the same goals and can achieve great work together. Indeed, we will be working to strengthen industry collaboration and increase experience sharing among the actors of the paper and paperboard industry. This will result in improving the industry’s environmental standards, along with consumer confidence. There is a lot of work to achieve in order to dispel misperception of our industry, which is strongly committed to constantly improving these standards”. “It is great”, said Martyn Eustace, Director of Two Sides, “to welcome Paper by Nature as a member of Two Sides. Converted products are purchased every day by both business and private consumers who are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of the goods they consume. Paper by Nature products are manufactured to meet demanding and increasing environmental standards. This is a shared strategy for all Two Sides members; demonstrating commitment to the environment and a responsible attitude towards the most efficient production processes”.

About Two Sides Two Sides is an initiative by companies from the Graphic Communication Value Chain including forestry, pulp, paper, inks and chemicals, pre press, press, finishing, publishing and printing. Today there are over 300 UK members.Their common goal is to promote the responsible production and use of print and paper, and dispel common environmental misconceptions by providing users with verifiable information on why print and paper is an attractive, practical and sustainable communications medium. www.twosides.info

Make more bread with EPSON

hErE is a hot lead for print services that are going like hot cakes! Not every baker will have the room or the necessary driving skills to install their own LFP so why not offer them your print products served up on the large scale. Cornwal based Warrens Bakery has installed an Epson Stylus Pro 7700 inkjet printer to print POS, improve customer communication quality and impact and to increase speed to market by producing A1 and A2 promotional posters in-house. Founded in 1860, Warrens Bakery has expanded steadily from its Penzance, Cornwall site and today has 60 shops in the South West, as far afield as Barnstaple and Exeter. The vast majority are branded as Warrens Bakery and sell a range of baked goods from traditional pasties and saffron cakes to hampers and Christmas puddings. Two stores carry the recently launched Simply Cornish brand, which also supports an online shop at www.simplycornish.com, and sells an extended range of up market, locally produced fine foods. Warrens runs regular promotions throughout its stores, often timed to coincide with saints’ days or local village events, but producing posters and other point of sale materials to support these was difficult and expensive, with quality restrictions on externally sourced digital print. Graphic and web designer Martin Sanders was tasked with finding a

suitable large format printer that would provide the productivity, flexibility and quality to bring poster production in-house. He selected an Epson Stylus Pro 7700 from specialist supplier Digital Photo Solutions. “We had an older printer that had come to the end of its life, so we had stopped producing anything larger than A3,” explains Sanders, adding, ” We were outsourcing A3 posters but it was costing too much to produce the A1 and A2 posters in the short runs and with the fast

turnaround we needed. Time is very much of the essence for us and the Stylus Pro 7700 provided the right mix of speed and quality for us. We were all happy with the previous Epson printer so were confident that this would be suitable.” Sanders also considered the Stylus Pro 7900 but felt that because the SP7700 is faster it was more suited to point of sale work. Its 1440 x 1440 dpi resolution, image and text quality are more than sufficient for large format display production, and

Epson’s UltraChrome ink set with Vivid Magenta technology gives a wide gamut suitable for reproducing both photographic product images and brand colours. “We had been using an office type printer for smaller jobs and external digital print services for larger items, handing off jobs as PDFs, but the spot colours weren’t coming out right either way,” says Sanders. Printing to the Stylus Pro 7700 using the Epson driver and standard settings we’re seeing much better colour accuracy already.” The Stylus Pro 7700 has already demonstrated its production speed too; Martin reports that in four hours he was able to print 30 A1 [841 x 594 mm] sheets, ready to be cut down into A2 posters, enough to equip all 60 retail stores. “It’s quick and quiet in operation, too,” he adds. Now that it’s practical and cost effective to produce the large format posters in-house, Warrens Bakery will be able to respond more quickly to localised market opportunities and changing consumer trends and preferences, with high quality eye-catching point of sale materials. The implementation of a Shiraz RIP is also expected to boost productivity further by maximising economical usage of stock when printing multiple sizes in mixed-job batches. www.epson.co.uk / Digital Photo Solutions: www. digitalphotosolutions.co.uk

Roland’s VersaUV LEC-330 opens new profit opportunities With increasingly tight margins and tougher competition, many commercial print companies are looking for lucrative niche markets in return for a modest investment. To achieve this aim, Belfast based T H Jordan has complemented its long established field of offset production with the addition of a Roland VersaUV LEC-330 UV-curable integrated inkjet print and cut solution. Founded in 1896, T H Jordan has grown steadily to become renowned as a company which produces extremely high standards of print up to B2 using traditional methods of offset litho. Single and multi-colour jobs are output using its Heidelberg MO and Printmaster presses, a single colour Ryobi and two Heidelberg platens. As trends have changed for shorter, more specialist applications, so T H Jordan investigated alternative, niche market areas where its traditional skills could be adapted to suit latter day production opportunities. Research by the company showed that, not only in the Belfast area but throughout the entire UK, there was a growing demand for proofing and prototyping of packaging along with an increasing popularity for unusual jobs which could only be produced using digital equipment. Managing Director of T H Jordan, Jim Parkhill, first saw the Roland VersaUV LEC-330 at an exhibition held at Dublin’s RDS, and purchased his system from Roland partner, Print and Finishing Equipment. “We visited this event without any preconceptions or plans to invest, but we were attracted immediately to this print and cut system because of the new opportunities it could bring to a

traditional print house,” he explains. “Once we had established how we could promote the machine’s potential and capabilities to our customer base, we decided to invest in the Roland – and we haven’t looked back.” To date, T H Jordan has preferred to work directly with a diverse range of end users. Since investing in the Roland machine, and having fully assessed its benefits, the company is now starting to approach agencies in Belfast, Dublin and London. Already there has been very positive feedback as a result of the stunning quality and the variety of end products that can be produced on the VersaUV LEC-330. “By showing samples to agencies, incorporating Roland’s flexible UV-curable inks with unusual end materials, our clients were literally blown away with what they saw,” he continues. “The addition of white and clear varnish offers additional bonuses as we can print onto coloured and metallic media. We can turn into reality a wealth of new ideas for creativity and design – options which haven’t been possible before.” Now that T H Jordan’s Roland VersaUV LEC-330 is up and running, Jim says that the company has three areas on which it is concentrating. Packaging specialists and their agencies are an obvious segment as this is where, before committing to a long run, end customers can see and feel a proof and a mock-up produced on the final material. The ability for the VersaUV LEC-330 to produce tactile finishes by layering the UV-curable clear varnish is also proving to be a benefit for T H Jordan. As well as being able to output Braille onto packaging samples, the company sees an important market for wayfinding and interpretive signs that comply with the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act). Another area where T H Jordan sees growing opportunities for the print and cut benefits of the new machine is within the label sector. For these applications, short runs can include variable data such as sequential numbering and personalisation which are complemented by the system’s ability to be used as a proofing device as it can print direct to the media being used in the final job. The third market for T H Jordan and its Roland solution lies in the commercial sector where design and print combine to produce prestigious items which aren’t practical using traditional offset litho. For example, the company’s initial job output on the LEC-330 was for a range of wedding stationery which included the individual invitations, the order of service and, even the place settings. “The quality and durability of the output we generate from the VersaUV LEC-330 is complemented by its ability to be used for cutting and creasing of packaging proofs,” he added “Yet we can just as easily create innovative and personalised portfolios of wedding and anniversary stationery, plus specialist signs and labels using the same technology. We believe that what we’re producing now is just the start of a long list of opportunities, and we can back this up with the ability to supply customers throughout the UK with extremely fast turn round times.” The Roland VersaUV LEC-330 and LEC-540 incorporate the company’s own UV-curable flexible ink formulation and LED curing for instant dry results on all materials. The integrated contour cutting works to the finest tolerances, enabling even small, nested labels and decals to be produced with absolute precision. The machine can be used with vast range of materials, including BOPP, PE and PEF film, plus card stocks, synthetics, plastics, polycarbonates and fabrics up to 1 mm in thickness. “It’s becoming increasingly clear that there is no end to the opportunities for users of our VersaUV LEC print-and-cut solutions,” comments Steve Chappell, Business Manager – Packaging, Proofing and Industrial Labelling at Roland DG (UK). “Many print companies start out with one idea and quickly move onto additional, diverse options once they discover the power and versatility of the machine.” www.rolanddg.co.uk or call: 0845 230 90 60

Sales Genes Scientists had a theory that beer contains small traces of salesmen hormone. To test their theory, they fed 100 normal men 12 pints of beer, and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively loudly without making sense, became emotional and couldn’t drive. No further testing was deemed necessary.

Nymphomaniac Convention A man boarded an aircraft at London’s Heathrow Airport for New York, and taking his seat as he settled in, he noticed a very beautiful woman boarding the plane. He realised she was heading straight toward his seat and bingo - she took the seat right beside him. ‘Hello’, he blurted out, ‘Business trip or vacation?’ She turned, smiled enchantingly and said, ‘Business. I’m going to the annual nymphomaniac convention in the United States.’ He swallowed hard. Here was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen, sitting right next to him, and she was going to a meeting for nymphomaniacs! Struggling to maintain his composure, he calmly asked, ‘What’s your business role at this convention?’ ‘Lecturer,’ she responded. ‘I use my experience to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.’ ‘Really’, he smiled, ‘what myths are those?’ ‘Well,’ she explained, ‘one popular myth is that African-American men are the most well endowed, when, in fact, it’s the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait. Another popular myth is that French men are the best lovers, when actually it is the men of Greek descent. We have also found that the best potential lovers in all categories are the Irish.’ Suddenly the woman became

uncomfortable and blushed. ‘I’m sorry,’ she said ‘I really shouldn’t be discussing this with you, I don’t even know your name!’ ‘Tonto,’ the man said. ‘Tonto Papadopoulos, but my friends call me Paddy.’

Alien Moggies Have you ever suspected that your cat may be from another planet? Do you sometimes wake in the night to find your cat standing on top of you, peering into your face, as if poised to perform some diabolical extraterrestrial experiment? When you feed your cat, does he or she look up at you sceptically as if to say, ‘My rations in the spacepod were much better than this.’ If so, your cat may be from outer space. Many people live with cats from outer space. They may not realise it for years. Then one day, they’re reading the Weekly World News and they notice that the pictured space aliens bear remarkable similarity to the moonyeyed, potbellied feline enigma crunched on their lap. Reading further, they begin to suspect that their own cat may be involved in the alien abductions. They consider bringing it up with the cat, but fear that they themselves may end up rocketing across the galaxy on a spaceship full of cats, an empty bag of Go-Cat stuffed in their mouth.

How to Tell If Your Cat Is from Outer Space If you suspect that your cat may be from another planet, ask yourself these questions: Do you sometimes wake in the night to find your cat fighting with extraterrestrial beings from another dimension that no one but the cat can see? Does your cat often simulate life in an anti-gravity environment by rolling on his back to look at you upside down, or stretch into peculiar ballet positions in your arms? Does your cat pretzel into strange sleeping postures that suggest she has undergone extensive astronaut training? Does your cat try to communicate with extraterrestrials by meowing at the TV, sitting on short-wave radios, lying on the computer monitor, or in any way attempting to serve as an antenna for a piece of consumer electronics? Does your cat stare at walls for hours as if receiving radio messages from the mothership through the plasterboard? Does your cat respond to the phrase ‘Beam me up!’ Does your cat

June 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | READER’S SCRIBES | 31

respond to anything in Klingon? Does your cat meticulously push the grit around in her litter box so that it looks crater-pocked like the lunar surface? Does your cat’s style of communicating with your computer seem more advanced than your own? For instance, does the cat sit on the monitor and look at it upsidedown, or lay on the keyboard until the computer won’t stop beeping? [Maureen this must be true!] Does your cat seem more intelligent than you are sometimes and superior to you as well? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, your cat may be a visitor on earth, sneakily gathering reconnaissance information to aid his race in their plan to conquer human civilisation and blanket the earth with carpet-covered kitty condos. Cats from outer-space look very much like ordinary cats. They have four feet, a tail, whiskers, ears that swivel side to side to pick up sounds from deep space, and eyes that look at you as if they can’t believe how dumb you are. In addition, they are remarkably adept at getting you to do things that you wouldn’t ordinarily do like pulling yourself out of bed at 3 a.m. to freshen the bowl of liver bits, or opening the back door a dozen times in less than an hour to let the cat in and out. Nothing that you feed your cat from outer space will be as good as what they ate on their home planet--and they will remind you of this frequently. So don’t even try to placate them.

Special Care Tips for Cats from Other Planets Remember that sometimes your cat will slip into an alternate universe in which he will confuse you for a giant spaceship vending machine. One that he needs merely to stand in front of meowing in order to elicit bowls of tuna and bits of cheese. Depending upon what corner of the galaxy your cat harkens from, he may confuse

A Downing Street spokesman has confirmed,

you for a robot instead--one that he must repeatedly trip in order to procure treats and transport from. Finally, you should not confuse cats from outer space with those who’ve been abducted by aliens. While the two kinds of cats are similar in many ways, cats who’ve been abducted by aliens like to run through the house crazily at night, jumping over furniture and scooting behind potted plants, re-enacting their escape from green men in saucer-shaped ships. CSN is happy to publish our readers scribes and share the cleaner jokes that are printable on these pages. The worrying thing with this cat lovers confession is it was sent in to Felix, The Copy Cat! Still this may start a trend so more jokes on salesmen, blondes or ourselves please to felix@ copyshopnews.co.uk

Rejected Rob the Rep from Reigate Sitting at the bar, sad Rob told the bartender that he was drinking to forget the heartbreak of his broken engagement. “Yeah”, said Rob, “would you marry someone who didn’t know the meaning of the word faithful, and who was flipant and even vicious when the subject of honesty and fidelity came up?” “No way Rob”, said the bartender. “Well’, said the Rep, ”neither would my fiancée”.

Shakin’ all over A skeleton once wanted to go to a party but then he realised he had NO-BODY to go with.

Doh!

‘Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender used to be a saleman, the bouncer is a part time salesman, and I’m a 6’ tall, 200lb. saleslady with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the woman sitting next to me is in sales and she’s a weight lifter. The man to your right is a rep, and he’s a weekend pro wrestler. Think about it seriously, Mister! You still wanna tell that joke?’ The printer reflects on the situation and says, ‘Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.’

Blonde Revenge What’s black and blue and brown and laying in a ditch? A brunette who’s told too many blonde jokes. What do you call going on a blind date with a brunette? Brownbagging it. What’s the real reason a brunette keeps her figure? No one else wants it. Why are so many blonde jokes oneliners? So brunettes can remember them. What do you call a brunette in a room full of blondes? Invisible. What’s a brunette’s mating call? ‘Has the blonde left yet? ‘ Why didn’t indians scalp brunettes? The hair from a buffalo’s butt was more manageable. Why is the brunette considered an evil colour? When was the last time you saw a blonde witch? What do brunettes miss most about a great party? The invitation What do you call a good looking man with a brunette? A hostage Who makes bras for brunettes? Fisher-Price Why are brunettes so proud of their hair? It matches their moustache.

Sales patter

A printer enters a bar and finds his way to a bar stool. After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the printer says to the bartender ‘Hey, you wanna hear a salesman joke?’ The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says,

Two salesmen were driving through Wales. As they were approaching Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town’s name. They argued back and forth until

that in order to meet the conditions for staying in the Euro

the phrase ‘spending a penny’ is not to be used after the 31st of December 2011.

they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter one salesman asked the blonde employee, ‘Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are ... very slowly?’ The girl leaned over the counter and said, ‘Burrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiiiiing.

A DROP IN SALARY PERHAPS A man came home from work one day to find his wife sitting on the front porch with her bags packed. He asked her where she was going and she replied “I’m going to London.” He questioned her as to why she was going and she told him “I just found out that I can make £200 a night doing what I give you for free”. He pondered that then went into the house and packed his bags and returned to the porch with his wife. She said “And just where do you think you’re going?” “I’m going too!” he replied. “Why?” She asked. “I want to see how you are going to live on £800 a year”!

A STORY ABOUT EVERYBODY This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

From this date the correct terminology will be ‘euronating’!
