Men across London are urged to give prostate cancer the red card The World Cup 2010 is just around the corner, and whilst football fans all over the country are crossing their fingers for a 1966 result, men across London will be locked in a battle of their own - The Prostate Cancer Charity’s Real Man Cup. The Charity’s annual men’s five-a-side tournament is back and this year’s event, which is scheduled for Saturday 13 March, is promising to be bigger than ever. Men across the capital are invited to live out their childhood dreams and score a goal at Wembley - at the Soccer Goals Centre that is, to help give prostate cancer the red card during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Football legend, Mark Bright, attended the Real Man Cup last year, to lend his top tips to the teams taking part on the day. Rumours are rife as to which soccer star will be on hand to coach the players this year. Following the final whistle after a tense penalty kick out last year, Mark Bright said: “It’s great to see so many men giving up their Saturday for a kick about with a difference. The football skills on display were excellent and the teams were all in great spirits. The Real Man Cup is in a league of its own and I’ve had a brilliant day and feel like I’ve won the tournament myself.” The Real Man Cup will take place on Saturday 13 March at Wembley Soccer Goals Centre. Teams can be made of up to eight players and the entry fee is £150

per squad. For further information please visit http://www.prostate-cancer.org. uk/help/community/RMC.asp or contact Gemma Cornwell on 020 8222 7630 or email gemma.cornwell@prostate-cancer.org.uk Thousands of individuals and groups across the UK will also support the awareness month by staging awareness events, signing up for five-a-side football tournament The Real Man Cup, or taking part in a brand new fundraising initiative, Do Blue Day. Whether people encourage their colleagues to wear a sea of blue to work, jump into a bath full of turquoise jelly or cook up a storm with blue-themed foods, they will be raising funds, and critical awareness of the disease. Morgana makes it 25,000 Sharp opens major new showroom to showcase document solutions portfolio

The 25,000th product to be made in the UK by Morgana Systems has come off the production line at the company’s Milton Keynes headquarters. Fittingly, the machine in question is an AutoCreaser 50 the latest version of the product that set Morgana on its way to becoming an international leader in digital finishing when it was launched in 2000. Pictured in the foreground with the AutoCreaser are Morgana’s Production Manager, Martin Washington (left) and his deputy, Adrian Whybrow. In common with 85% of the output from Morgana’s factory, this unit is destined for export – the machine in question having been sold to one of Morgana’s leading US dealers, E. Thomas Brett of Pennsylvania. Commenting on the landmark 25,000 and the continuing popularity of the AutoCreaser, Morgana’s M.D. Quen Baum said that Morgana had started by making folders and numberers March 2010 | Copy Shop News

but production had increased dramatically with the introduction of the AutoCreaser, which was the first finishing product to address the specific problems posed by the digital print process. “Everyone now appreciates that digital output cracks when folded and that it has to be precreased”, he said, “but the AutoCreaser was the first product to provide high speed automated creasing at an affordable cost. There is still a high demand for it and it will continue to be an integral part of our range for the foreseeable future.” The patented blade and matrix creasing mechanism devised for the AutoCreaser has since been incorporated into other successful Morgana digital finishing products such as the DigiFold and DocuMaster. The benefits of Apprenticeship & Vocational Learning aPPrenTiceShiPS and Vocational Learning are a fantastic way to train the workforce. It is one of the most cost-effective ways to train staff. Work-based training programmes allow people to earn and learn at the same time by combining on and off the job training and they ensure that learners are trained in the skills that are relevant to their work at the same time as increasing motivation and company loyalty. In the current economic climate where people sometimes have to take on new roles, this is a great way to retrain or up skill employees. Bob O’Shea, Chairman, Proskills Print Qualifications Reform Group said, “The opportunity for employers to capture and train that unique talent you get from a successful apprenticeship has never been greater nor the challenges it brings more difficult. Ever more reason to make it happen and reap the benefits” Designed by employers for employers, vocational learning is tailored to meet the needs of industry and business to help improve the productivity and profitability of a business as well as being a great way to fill skills gaps in existing workforces and ensuring that future workforce generations

are equipped with the right skills and qualifications to meet current and future business needs. Apprenticeships and vocational learning are not just about training the young, “older” workers can also benefit. Particularly in the current economic climate, people have to retrain for new roles, and up skill to deliver the demands of new working systems. Vocational training offers an unrivalled framework to undertake new or changed roles, and provides a means of continual professional development, and as part of Proskills commitment to Apprenticeship week they are announcing 2010 Apprenticeship and Training Awards. In its fourth year, the Proskills Awards celebrate and reward the achievement of apprentices within the process and manufacturing sector. This year, Proskills is expanding its categories to also acknowledge the achievements of vocational learners, employers and training providers who have been committed to training and up skilling their workforce. Premier Beswick sponsors ‘Everest Trek’ employee

PaPer merchant Premier Beswick, part of the Premier Paper Group, has sponsored employee Simon Bennett, who is undertaking an enormous feat for the Help for Heroes charity by trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, which is at a height of 5,585 metres. Simon, who is known as “Ben” to customers and staff alike, works at Premier Beswick’s Cheltenham branch as a driver/warehouseman, was previously a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces where he served as a Physical Training Instructor for 4th Field Royal Artillery Regiment – “The North East Gunners”. Simon says he has always maintained a high level of contact with his fellow service pals, some of who went on to become Sergeant Majors and most of them have seen active services in places such as Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan to mention a few. “Because of these reasons I decided that I wanted to try and raise some funds to help the families and the injured soldiers. The charity that I have chosen is “HELP FOR HEROES”.” So, on 25th March 2010 Simon will be heading out to Nepal, on a self-financed trip, and undertaking his enormous task to get to Mount Everest Base Camp. The “HELP FOR HEROES” charity helps all of our armed forces and their families after injury or death, so Simon 6

says that to him every penny raised will count. “As our troops are shedding blood, sweat and tears for us back home, I shall shed a lot of sweat and possibly some tears to help them!” If you would like to make a donation you can do so via Simon’s charity website at www.bmycharity.com/

SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT GROUP CALLS FOR DEFAULT RETIREMENT AGE TO STAY a small business support group has called for plans to scrap the default retirement age to be shelved. The Government has proposed removing an employer’s option to retire workers when they reach 65, claiming the change will prevent an anticipated skills shortage. However, the Forum of Private Business (FPB) believes that if the move goes ahead, it could prove highly damaging to thousands of small firms. Currently, there is nothing to stop an employee working on past 65, providing his or her employer agrees to the move. Many businesses are well aware of the skills and experience older workers provide and are happy to maintain their employment. However, if the default retirement age is scrapped, business owners will be forced to keep on over 65s, whether they want to or not. This, the FPB believes, will prove a huge problem for thousands of small firms, hampering their abilities to plan for the future. The move could also open the door to costly and painful employment tribunals, as employers only means of ending employment will be through a ‘capability dismissal’ based on the declining competence of the worker. The FPB set out its views on the issue in response to a Government consultation, which has now closed. In its response to the consultation, the FPB emphasised the need for small firms to be able to plan ahead. The FPB’s response reads: “Removal of the default retirement age will limit some small businesses by removing the tools that help them to plan for the future. Most employees are certainly competent enough to work beyond the age of 65 without a significant deterioration in their abilities. However, for those employees not willing to leave voluntarily, there will eventually come a time when the needs of the business will have to be considered. In the absence of a default retirement age, the only viable option available to an employer is a capability dismissal based on the declining competence of the worker. We believe this would be an undignified and humiliating end to a career for most staff.”

Mimaki trade-up scheme ThroughouT this Spring, Hybrid is offering a lucrative trade-up scheme for users of their highly successful Mimaki JV3 printer as well as customers with other solvent machines too. Available through Hybrid’s authorised reseller network, the Spring Promotion is a great way to invest in new hardware, whilst saving up to £8,000 as part of the trade-up scheme. In any of the new printers, customers can choose either Mimaki’s eco or low solvent inks – with advantages for either, and with the CJV30 and JV33, a bright, opaque white available as standard for the low solvent ink set. Production features, such as Mimaki’s UISS (Uninterrupted Ink Supply System) and the powered take up unit allow for long, unattended print runs and the inclusion of Mimaki’s RasterLink Pro RIP software package mean it’s ready to run from the box. Mimaki’s low solvent inkset characteristically achieves a three year outdoor lifespan – even for unlaminated prints; ensuring a durable and vibrant print for sign makers’ customers. A perfect example in the range is the Mimaki JV33 Series inkjet printer. Its ability to print to a vast range of inexpensive uncoated materials (from banner and vinyl, through paper, canvas, coated metallic and clear films, pull up materials and backlit products to name a few) put it at the forefront of the wide format printer market and with its low running costs and lucrative two year warranty, it pays back quickly too. Talking of paying back, Hybrid offers a unique ink cartridge recycling scheme – linked to valuable ink rebates – that’s proved very popular with their eco and

8

workflows. In addition brand new innovations for the professional printing world will be presented at the Konica Minolta booth for the first time. “At our IPEX stand, we’d like to show printing professionals what they can offer their customers in terms of end products, print quality and services,” adds Olaf Lorenz. “With our extensive experience and broad range of printing solutions, we consider ourselves the ideal partner for all customers seeking to perform at top level. From us, you can really expect impact for your business.” Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK), tel: 01908 200400, or visit www.konicaminolta.co.uk

low solvent ink using customers. The phenomenally successful scheme (the first of its kind) is almost entirely coordinated online to avoid unnecessary paper and administration. Hybrid arranges collection of spent cartridges at their cost – and typically tie this into visits to the same area to make the whole scheme as green as possible. Hybrid recycles all the components of the cartridges and so far, the success of the programme has led to many tonnes of landfill being removed in the past year alone. In addition to the environmental benefits of the scheme, a valuable rebate is paid – providing the customer with financial reward for their environmental efforts. Hybrid’s marketing manager, Duncan Jefferies told us “The Let’s Do More scheme works because customers are so committed to it and we reward this with a rebate towards valuable consumables for their business. So far, this has resulted in well over £40,000 worth of ink being supplied free to our customers as our thanks to them for contributing to the programme.” “The success of Mimaki’s solvent printers has come about for many reasons, but having so many machines in the market place means that there are a lot of cartridges we can take out of landfill through recycling - and that’s an important cornerstone of our green philosophy.” With ongoing cost benefits and strong environmental credentials – coupled to Hybrid’s Spring Trade-up Promotion, the Mimaki JV33 Series is a powerful solution for the signmaker and graphics professional. More information on this, and the complete range of Mimaki’s products, is available by visiting www. YouGetMore.co.uk and the web based ink recycling programme can be found at www.LetsDoMore.co.uk . Hybrid can be contacted on 01270 501900 and the full Mimaki range is available through their authorised reseller network.

TheMagicTouch ‘Full Colour Printing on Nylon?’ O

ver the past 12 months there has been a dramatic increase in demand for full colour printing of logos and designs onto fabrics and garments made of nylon or polyester. The range of such garments is increasing with a wider choice of designs and colours now available. This is now affordably possible using TheMagicTouch image transfer process. The market is changing, as are attitudes and perception towards transfer technology, with a realisation that TheMagicTouch image transfer process assists in creating new business and marketing opportunity. There are a myriad of different solutions available for full colour transfer printing on dark garments, all options seem to have their unique differences but vary dramatically in quality, speed and price. TheMagicTouch offer the “Award Winning” WoW transfer paper for full colour printing onto almost all fabric types regardless of fabric colour. The latest addition to the printable range is that of Nylon considered by many as the “Holy Grail” of full colour transfer printing. The process involves no cutting or weeding and offers flexibility on transfer positioning, even on sleeves and collars. The WoW transfer durability is beyond all expectations previously achieved with full colour transfers. The toner-based colour printers used to produce the WoW transfers are available for a few hundred pounds with a typical full colour

“breast logo” costing less than 50p each to produce. The bottom line is simple, once you see, touch and feel the WoW transfer and consider the options, WoW is the perfect inexpensive solution to the growing market of short-run full colour “dark colour garment” decoration. In a production environment an operator can easily produce in excess of 45 garments per hour, therefore looking at the modular expansion, the more presses the more garments! Mimaki’s new adhesive belt equipped LFP With continued demand for short run production, lower costs and greater creativity across the board in direct to textile printing, the introduction of Mimaki’s new TX4001800B textile inkjet printer looks set to deliver a solution for the apparel, furnishings and soft signage markets. Historically, production textile printing has required long runs, cumbersome un-environmentally friendly processes and the costs and time associated with rotary or flat screen printing. The introduction of the Mimaki TX400 provides a solution for volume production of high quality direct to textile prints onto a myriad range of fabrics. With a 1.8m print width and production speeds of around 25sq m / hour, the TX400-1800B utilises an adhesive belt carrier system to stabilise fabrics that have a tendency to stretch and contract during printing. This technology ensures a high quality of result, increased speed and reduced ink usage - alongside the capability of printing to traditionally ‘difficult’ materials. The high speeds are achieved even with an 8 colour ink set and at detailed resolutions - and the newly designed heater system allows for the rapid drying of the wetted out fabric before it goes onto the powered take-up roller. This also incorporates Mimaki’s Web Tension Control System that provides consistent tension over the full width of the print - whether on light or heavyweight cloths. The machine’s inbuilt UISS (Uninterrupted Ink Supply System) automatically switches between ink sacks as the ink becomes spent, easily fulfilling long run, unattended print jobs. With the use of Mimaki’s new two litre bulk ink containers, the ink cost is reduced significantly too. Inks for the machine include reactive dye (for printing to cotton and 10

silk), acid dye (for silk, nylon and wool) and dye sublimation inks for polyester prints. As such; the range of work that can be produced with the printer is vast - from haute couture silk scarves through to flags and fabric banners, upholstery and sportswear - the list is endless! Hybrid’s marketing manager, Duncan Jefferies comments; “Production digital textile printing is all about reducing costs, lead times and waste, whilst maintaining quality and creativity. The Mimaki TX400 makes the introduction of a low inventory business model possible, drastically reduces environmental impact and delivers what the customer wants, in the time that they need it.” The TX400-1800B joins the dye sub specific 1800D model at the head of Mimaki’s direct-to-textile printer range — adding the adhesive belt to its sister machine’s feature list. Delivery of both is expected to commence in Spring 2010 with demonstrations available through Hybrid’s authorised textile reseller network. Roland’s Revolutionary LFP – VersaCAMM VS-640

Roland DG, manufacturer and supplier to the sign and allied industries of inkjet printing, cutting systems and related consumables has announced the launch of the new, 64” VersaCAMM VS-640. Available in three configurations, this next-generation printer/ cutter continues the record of innovation established by Roland’s VersaCAMM line, and delivers entirely new application potential with genuine metallic ink and the advanced ink handling technology required to print it. The printer is also available configured to print dual CMYK for top quality output at high production speeds, and as a Hi-Fi colour printer with light cyan and light magenta, plus white ink. Positioned squarely at professional graphics producers such as sign and display manufacturers, the VersaCAMM VS-640 has the potential to redefine what a wide format inkjet printer can do for graphics producers and what wide format digital inkjet print can do for their customers. Configured to print Roland’s award-winning new Eco-Sol Max metallic ink, the printer produces a

dazzling range of pure metallic and pearlescent colours. The user can freely combine silver, process colour and white to effortlessly create a range of specialist effects yet to be imagined. Equipped with a VS-640 configured for metallic ink, the user can produce effects that were once the exclusive province of costly offset or screen processes. Now they’re possible without costly origination or specialised media for use anywhere conventional durable inkjet output can be used - and in thousands of places it never has been. The VS-640 also features a new print head which enables a greater range of variable dots to be printed. When configured with light cyan, light magenta and white ink, the result is immediately apparent in the printer’s output. Images rich in colour and density now display even smoother gradations, and solid colours are faithfully rendered free of artefacts. Roland’s Intelligent Pass Control further contributes to productivity and quality, elevating the VS-640’s Hi-Fi output into a class of its own beyond four-colour.

For users looking for outright productivity, the VS-640 is available configured with a dual CMYK ink setup. In this configuration, the printer is able to cruise at high production speeds while maintaining quality standards normally associated with unidirectional print. Free from chromatic artefacts, the output stands close comparison with output from printers produced at much slower speeds and gives users of the VS-640 a distinct and measurable commercial edge when addressing the volume markets for print. Whatever configuration is chosen, the VersaCAMM VS-640 provides a robust 64” print and cut platform in one manageable footprint. Easy to work with, maintenance is largely automatic and requires little in the way of operator intervention. The VS-640 boasts the same ink recirculation system as that introduced on the SolJet Pro III XC-540MT, which prevents the pigment in metallic and white ink from settling, and thus reduces ink wastage and running costs. Also, thanks to a heavy-duty take-up unit, unattended print and cut operation is possible and accuracy is maintained over the longest production runs. The VersaCAMM VS-640 also features the all-new Roland OnSupport, a diagnostic support package that assists the user in informing them of tasks such as print finish, low ink or emergency stop via email alerts. A perfect tool for people who cannot afford to be with the printer 24/7 Roland OnSupport is the start of complete control for print producers everywhere. Despite its innovation-led features and the entirely new possibilities they introduce, the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 is priced to appeal to print producers of more or less any size at £17,999, including the take-up unit. The first opportunity to see this innovative new machine will be at this year’s Sign and Digital UK, 13-15 of April, where it will be making its European debut. www.rolanddg.co.uk

European debut of Fujifilm Acuity Advance HS at Sign & Digital FuJiFilm is exhibiting its latest line-up of inkjet printing systems and media at Sign & Digital UK 2010 from 13th - 15th April 2010 at the NEC. The recently-launched latest model in the Acuity series of UV flatbed printers will feature on the stand, alongside the euromedia range of products for inkjet roll-to-roll devices. Showing for the first time in Europe, the Acuity Advance HS is the latest addition to the Acuity series and meets demands for a cost effective, high quality printer with even greater productivity than before. Near-photographic quality images can be achieved at typical production speeds of 40m2/hr, with a new ‘express’ mode of 65m2/hr for images viewed from greater distances. As with the other models in the series, the printer’s ability to print edge-to-edge saves time and labour in finishing, and end-use application possibilities are extended with a white ink option. In addition, a roll media unit can be added to print to a broad range of flexible materials. Fujifilm has specifically designed the Sign & Digital UK stand to allow both printers and finishers to get hands-on with products in the euromedia range. The euromedia brand includes a wide array of consumables, finishing tools and presentation systems for roll-to-roll printing, with an extensive media range for water-based, solvent-based and laminating applications. David Burton, European euromedia sales director at Fujifilm, says: “We are excited about our wide-format line-up for visitors to this year’s Sign & Digital UK. By combining the first European showing of the Acuity Advance HS and our euromedia range, smaller printers right through to high-end, high productivity print service providers will find solutions for both roll-to-roll and rigid material decoration on our stand.” www.fujifilmholdings.com

CASE STUDY

Qube – certainly not square

Professional printers will decide to run existing repeat jobs on a Xerox Qube to save running costs and increase profit margins. When quoting for new business sight of the job will become as important as LFP poster work.

m

any cSn readerS are looking to take volume off of their digital presses, especially shorter run print jobs and on-demand work over the counter. The inherent problem is when smaller, slower original colour printer kit has been upgraded it has either been removed or now runs at a less competitive cost per print. Until recently our print shops have had to invest over £100K to achieve running costs less than 5p pp. Now, with the Xerox Colour Qube 9201, investment starts at around £200 per month to finance the kit and obtain service including toner from under 1p pp A3 for colour and black and white. In particular, the unique way the Xerox Qube breaks down the service charges to 3 bands of toner usage will attract new print customers to use colour. Whereas before, budgets would have dictated a mono print, colour is now affordable. This will create new colour print, only affordable at present with a Xerox Colour Qube. As this does not fuel a price war, CSN can readily recommend this printer as quickly as we did when we started the old Xerox DC12 revolution. Heady days those, with A3 colour at only 5p and everyone else clicking twice for more. Xerox invoice running costs through its normal FSMA agreement using three meter readings dependent on how much consumables are used in the production of each print. In short here are the bands and achievable break points. Tier One – Useful Colour – up to 1.2% coverage – .5p; yes point 5 of a penny, ie a halfpenny. Tier Two – Every Day Colour – up to 8% coverage – 2.5p Tier Three – Expressive Colour – 8% plus coverage – 5p To appreciate what billing category each job will run at is as simple as doing one sample print. For now, just check out the coverage samples here; Tier one will attract a lot of letterhead work with tier two 14

developing new markets for ‘spot full colour’ manuals, books and reports. Tier three will be for everything else, it will benefit from a cost ceiling of 5 pence as most existing service plans do. For a comparison with your present costs remember to add any toner charges you receive if you are on a not inclusive deal. These service charges include all consumables, save paper, power and labour. Also check if you are being charged two clicks for A3? If you are wondering how Xerox are offering such a small colour click rate, and only on the Qube? It is due to the print process not requiring either a

drum or a fuser roller. The new Xerox Color Qube™ 9200 Series multifunction printer uses Xerox’s proven solid ink technology to the centre of a highly competitive market. At the heart of Color Qube is a print head that increases ink flow 400 percent by packing in 880 nozzles. Each print head is about the size of a deck of cards and funnels molten solid ink through a complex network of channels to the nozzles, enabling colour printing at 85 pages per minute. The design features four print heads per printer totalling more than 3,500 ink nozzles. “This device opens up a huge market for Xerox,” said Don Titterington, vice president, print head and ink research and development at Xerox. “At 150 million drops per second, this is a breakthrough in how fast we can put ink on the page. That is as many ink drops

automatically enter power-saving mode, resuming full-power operation as employees begin work activity.

in a minute as there are people on the planet.” The Color Qube we had on test was noted by our own shop operators to have the following attributes; Nice bright colours. Prints onto 250 gsm straight out of tray 1, good registration. Quick and easy to change toner refills, no excessive packaging to dispose of. Print speeds up to 85 ppm. Copy speeds up to 50 ppm. Powerful scan and fax solutions. Paper size up to SRA3. Maximum paper capacity7,300 sheets. Good repro from the glass. Copier screen easy to use. And get this, it even smells nice! The Color Qube also features: • Sophisticated sensors and image processing algorithms to calibrate the image before it is printed. • A product lifecycle that requires 9 percent less energy and produces 10 percent fewer greenhouse gases than comparable laser equipment. • A patented vacuum system, only 17 thousandths of an inch wide that removes tiny paper dust particles from the printing zone, lengthening the life of the print head. • An Intelligent Ready system uses a patented learning technology to activate a power-saving mode based on the users’ schedules. For example, after monitoring work patterns for a couple of weeks, the device will detect if there is a low level of use during the lunch hour and will

3 images of awards Praise for this more affordable full and spot colour print option is being heralded from all the important people with best buy awards and more, all we can say is make room for at least one or at least upgrade your next mono upgrade to include colour at he same cost. • In May 2009 the Color Qube was honoured with a Technological Innovation Award from Industry Analysts, Inc., in recognition of the breakthrough technology behind the world’s first high-speed solid ink multifunction printer. • In June 2009 the new Hybrid Colour pricing plans, offered with the Color Qube, were awarded “Most Innovative Colour Printer Pricing” as part the 2009 BERTL’s Best Awards. • In July 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI) awarded the Color Qube an Outstanding Achievement Award for its innovative pricing structure, ease of use and environmental benefits. DIGITAL IMAGING

Art for Arts’ Sake

Digital image printing is torn in two directions between fast cheap output, and more costly and time consuming quality. Which is more profitable is not always a simple calculation. As a print on demand service we are naturally inclined towards the former, but there is a good case for considering the latter. Martin Christie writes…

A

fter ten years of experience, I think it’s safe to say I have a pretty broad grasp of the problems and the potential profits of premium quality printing, wearing as I do two hats as a photographer, understanding the input, and as a printer, having control of the output — at least most of the time ! The one thing I would advise anyone starting or thinking of moving into the area is that there is no middle ground, no compromise between cost and quality. It is very much in line with the old adage, you get what you pay for, and that applies as much to the machines and media, as well as what the customer receives. Part of the problem, like everything else we do, is educating the customer to pay a premium for quality. You are not going to convince everyone, certainly not your average customer, so the target audience is those who appreciate or expect the difference. This is most likely to be professional people for whom image is a vital presentation piece — designers and illustrators, for example. Anyone who is generating their own original image for sale or for promotion of services. This group can also include actors, models, and media persons. It may include photographers, although most of these will probably have bought a decent A3 inkjet printer by now and be printing themselves. Printing digital photographs does help a photographer understand how digital cameras see colours, and most professionals will want the direct personal feedback that results. It is a lot easier sorting out colour and lighting problems in the camera when shooting, than on1 the computer later. Amateur photographers, especially those new to photography as a direct result of the digital age, may not realise this, especially if they have bought a very expensive camera. They may not appreciate the amount, or accept the cost, of colour correction needed to achieve print results they expect from their handywork. Tact may be needed to break it to them gently. The group certainly includes artists, in all their many forms from seriously commercial to enthusiastic amateur, and this is one sector I not only have a

22

lot of experience with, but would also advise can be the most problematic. I know some printers who will actually refuse to deal with artists, and while that is a bit of an extreme embargo, I can at times sympathise with this policy. My general advice covers all high quality digital printing, although the art side has its own particular issues. Not that long ago, before affordable colour printing came to the high street, artists wishing to reproduce copies of their art would have to go for a short run lithographically. They had to make a gamble on how many units of a limited addition they could sell. This gamble not only depended on the popularity of the image, and on how good they were at selling it. The result was usually a redundant pile of unsold prints stashed somewhere in a back bedroom that might just represent the difference between profit and loss on the whole exercise. The digital age has made short run printing possible, and of course through the internet it has also made promotional sales so much easier. Now prints can be made to order, at the time of order, and most significantly, after they have actually been paid for. The flexibility of the digital image is such that once an original has been turned into binary bits it can just as easily be applied to a Christmas card, a calendar, a mouse mat or a mug — whatever is desired. The key issues are the same for all

customer work — the quality of the input and the quality of the output. If the original has been digitally generated by the customer — on a computer — or captured on a camera or scanner, then you only have control of the output. It may need several test proof prints to achieve results the customer expects, and this applies whether using inkjet or conventional toner machines. Only experience, and a keen eye, will give you a clue as to how an image viewed on the screen will reproduce. File size, and resolution, are a guide but not a guarantee. But then that’s not even touching the numerous colour issues, such as the difference between display screen and printed page. Regardless of whether the monitor has been properly

calibrated, there is always the simple fact that a projected image backlit on a red/green/blue high def viewer is always going to look slightly different printed on white paper in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. More specialist printing on inkjet has the advantage of more colours, up to as many as twelve on some machines. This wider gamut allows more subtle tonal range rather than the more severe transition from one colour to another familiar with toner. But at the end of the day, you still have to get the colours right, whatever. Ironically some images may even suit the more dramatic hue of toner — “more vibrant” I often tell customers. Designers who are generating work completely digitally are often easier to please because they have no colour reference in the real world. They have to accept the practical limitations of print. Artists working with hard copy originals however have other issues. To understand why, it’s worth just popping into an art shop to appreciate the massive selection of material available,

both to print on and to print with. From soft subtle watercolours, through acrylics to heavy oils, the colour range makes a Dulux chart look pathetically limited. Oh, and I nearly forgot pencil and charcoal. Then some artists will work with bits of material, stuck on vinyl, or carved wood and worked metal. I even have one artist whose entire collection is based on people made from a created selection of sweets — a sort of confectionery version of Lowrie’s matchstick men. Obviously anything three dimensional is impossible to reproduce — at least until 3D printers (yes they really do exist) become common place — and even getting close to copying texture accurately can be a challenge. Current flatbed scanners-even the ones on top of copiers- are pretty good but generally limited on size to A3, and to resolution. Anything that won’t go completely flat will have problems with shadow being caused, either seeping in from the edges, or ghosting as the scanner light passes. That light will pass in one direction only so if you try and be clever and scan two bits of a larger original you may have difficultly disguising the join later as the shadow may go in two different directions. We invested in a very good A2 scanner from Contex because of taking in so much artists work, the majority of which is A3 plus, but even than you will get things that are too big, or two difficult to commit to the glass. Photography is then not just the only solution, but often the best because I can use lighting to control shadow, or actually create relief effect. That’s easy for me, having made the personal investment in camera

colours under the suggestion that it was the printer that was all wrong. I didn’t get involved in that one, but everyone who has stood at a copy shop counter will have experienced a similar scenario. At least if you have taken the picture, or scanned it yourself, you are in with a chance of working out what the issue is. It’s a learning curve, and you cannot expect a customer to grasp it when they only deal with digital when they need to, not on a daily basis. Fortunately I have been able to build up a faithful following of artists — not without the cost of a few more grey hairs and wrinkles- who will listen to and accept my advice. But as much as the trials and tribulations have taxed me, I have also learnt a lot from them along the way. The important thing is matching what can practically be done with what they can afford or expect to pay. What they have to learn to accept is that accurate colour matching may be important to them aesthetically, but if it’s a good looking print that people want to buy, there can’t be that much wrong with it. and studio lighting, and having the In that context there are a couple of experience to use it. For the average basic compromises in terms of colour copy shop this is not an option, but a and the nature of reflected light. We all decent digital camera, with some basic know, or learn, that the colour of print expertise is a worthwhile investment will look different under the lights of even if only occasionally used. It may the shop -whether cool fluorescent or well be better than letting the customer warm tungsten — compared to outside bring in images of uncertain quality on daylight. This is because we see not the a memory stick. With a knowledge of colour itself, but the light reflected back the printer’s performance, and a little from it. Of course we can’t even be sure bit of practice, you may be pleasantly we all see exactly the same colour, there surprised at the results. is no way of proving it. Colour blindness Just recently an artist from whom I had is more obvious, but I am convinced previously shot some originals was at we all have a sort of colour bias in the the counter with some images he had perception of light, or at least in our shot himself and was fussing over the preferences.

As a photographer, I will always try and assess all of the colours in an image in order to correct for print. I have found however, many artists prefer to get one or two particular colours right, even if it means others are significantly out. Sometimes you just have to take your printer’s goggles off and try and get behind the eyes of a creative. Sometimes you want to say that actually yours looks better than the original. Sometimes the artist will say that too. The one thing I have definitely learnt from artists is to expect the unexpected. I have got nearly to the conclusion of this month’s column without mentioning the word Giclee. This title, taken from the French, simply describes the jets of ink in the process of printing but was adopted to set aside fine art and photographic printing from standard inkjet. The fact is that any pigment based inkjet printer, using compatible media, should produce print that is fade free, and as long-lasting as the quality of the paper allows. The practical difference is that printing onto higher quality paper, generally thicker, with a texture, or onto canvas, although a higher cost, produces a much higher perceived value. There are now a great range of different quality media available for all types of art and photographic printing. You don’t have to pay through the nose for a brand name, and it is worth shopping around just to buy the margins that make quality printing profitable. Next month I will compare some of the varied media I have been using in recent years. You may get what you pay for but it’s still important to know exactly what you are getting.

‘Lean and Green’ in North Yorkshire North Yorkshire - based Duraweld, one of the UK’s leading producers of customised presentation, packaging and printed stationery products, has been selected by the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) to host a visit showcasing best practice in lean manufacturing and successful environmental management.

The visit, which forms part of the MAS’s ‘Inside Industry’ initiative, is due to be held on the 25th February at the company’s factory in Scarborough and will show delegates from around the region how lean manufacturing works in practice. It will also focus on how Duraweld has been able to successfully

synchronise lean manufacturing with its 20–step environmental programme, which has seen significant reductions in waste and energy consumption year on year. Launched in 2002, MAS is one of the Government’s ‘Solutions for Business’ suite of offerings, jointly funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the nine English Regional Development Agencies. In Yorkshire & Humber, MAS is jointly supported by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and managed by YFM Business Development. It aims to help manufacturers streamline their processes, reduce waste, become more energy efficient and generally improve their businesses. The ‘Inside Industry’ factory visit programme for the Yorkshire and Humber region runs regular tours to enable manufacturers to benchmark their performance and learn new techniques from some of the most successful businesses in area. Jamie Swan, Duraweld’s Production Manager, who will be hosting the tour said: “The main benefit of running our lean manufacturing and environmental management programmes side by side is that we have been able to stay competitive and innovative in what is a traditional, mature industry. We are delighted that the MAS has chosen Duraweld to show other companies how it can work well when it is done with commitment and care, and I hope we can provide some really useful tips to help inspire people to improve their manufacturing and environmentally friendly processes in the future.” For further information about these visits or to register online go to www.masyh.co.uk/events/insideindustry-factory-visit-to-duraweld www.duraweld.co.uk

Repropoint go greener Repropoint, one of the South of England’s providers of digital print solutions, and a leading environmental champion in the printing industry, has stepped up its commitment to the environment by adding to its range of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved materials those used for plotters and plan printers. It has also pledged to dedicate a tree with the Woodland Trust for each order worth over seventy five pounds received for FSC approved plain paper or inkjet rolls in January. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, nongovernmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products that are FSC approved are produced using materials from sustainable sources. Repropoint became a fully certified company by the Forest Stewardship Council in January 2008, achieving one of the highest accolades for a printing company. Certification means that Repropoint are able to guarantee the authentication of responsible forest management products to their customers. Steve Hallett, Managing Director of Repropoint, says, ‘We have been actively seeking materials for all aspects of our business that meet these exacting standards and the wide format range has, until now, been the one area that has eluded us. Now our approved products include ColourLink 80gsm and 90gsm uncoated inkjet paper. It even includes 75gsm and 90gsm plain paper.’ In addition to dedicating a tree with the Woodland Trust for every order over seventy-five pounds for FSC approved plain paper or inkjet rolls received in January, Repropoint will also send the customer a personalised dedication certificate and wood information sheet which will show the dedicated area of the UK in which the tree has been planted. Last year Repropoint also gained certification for the British Environmental Standard ISO 14001. With its head office in Woking, Repropoint has three other branches in the South of England, based at Guildford, Portsmouth and Southampton and a graphic design company called Round and Red.

GREEN ISSUES

PEFC at Paperworld Regular CSN contributor, Andy Scott reports from Germany. It is a relaxed and somewhat pleased Ben Gunneberg I find greeting me at the Paperworld 2010 exhibition in a wintry and snowbound Frankfurt. PEFC’s Director General has just arrived hot foot from his base in Geneva, and clearly has a message to relay to Paperworld visitors. “Currently PEFC remains the certification system of choice for forest owners globally. An additional 16 million hectares of forest area were certified to PEFC since November 2008, which represents a growth of 7%.” This is just one of the highlights which marked another successful 2009 for PEFC, which with more than 225million hectares of certified forest area, remains the world’s largest forest certification system. Another high point of 2009 was that demand for Chain of Custody certification continued to gain momentum, with responsible companies seeking to procure wood-based products from sustainablymanaged forests. Last year PEFC Chain of Custody certificates recorded an increase of 36%. With more than 1,500 certificates being awarded, there are now more than 5,700. In addition to these achievements, five countries were either endorsed or re-endorsed in 2009. These included Australia, China, Gabon, Malaysia and Russia. And Gunneberg is confident more will follow soon. This year ten scheme revisions will be processed, with at least one additional national scheme likely to obtain PEFC endorsement by meeting PEFC’s stringent criteria. What’s more Gunneberg remains confident that PEFC is well positioned to promote and strengthen sustainable forest management and chain of custody certification globally, while contributing to the responsible management of the world’s forests. “We have the necessary structures in place to resource, run, grow and promote our services,” he commented, “and together with all stakeholders united by the common objective of a world in which people manage forests sustainably, we are anticipating building on our achievements to further

improve the value that we add to global society in 2010.” New standards and guidelines have also been introduced, with a revision of the International Chain of Custody standard which started in spring 2008, due for final approval later this year. There is also the development of a joint PEFC – International Accreditation Forum (IAF) document for certification bodies which conduct Chain of Custody audits, which has now moved into its final stage for formal approval by the IAF. At the same time changes have also taken place at Board level within PEFC, with new PEFC chairman William Street becoming the first union official to be elected as chairman of a global forest certification organisation. William was formerly the Global Forest Director for Global Union Federation, the BWI (Building and Woodworkers International), an umbrella organization which groups together 318 trade unions representing some 12 million members in 130 countries. Currently he is on the board of BWI, whose headquarters are in Geneva. Now resident in Oregon, he holds degrees in political science from Mansfield State University and the University of Oregon. The UK has also played its part in PEFC’s success in 2009. In February 2009 the 1,000th Chain of

Custody certificate was issued to fine arts and social stationery publisher Woodmansterne, whilst magazines such as The Economist and large run catalogues such as Argos are all proudly displaying the PEFC logo to provide assurances of responsible paper sourcing. In November, PEFC celebrated its 10th Anniversary at its General Assembly in Paris. To mark the occasion, PEFC France launched the world’s first sustainable advertising hoarding, which was displayed high above the streets of Paris. As we head back to the PEFC stand I pondered the vision that it’s newly-appointed chairman has for the organisation as it moves into the future: “I would expect to see us expand our efforts to protect forests and the sustainable livelihoods they provide to local communities and families in the Global South, building on our successes doing so in the Global North.I am looking forward to working with global forest leaders to promote forest certification to support our common efforts to safeguard these important ecosystems, the biodiversity they sustain, and the livelihoods that depend on them.” In a world where the vital role that forests can play in mitigating climate change, that’s surely a goal worth pursuing.

Most of our 8 million, and growing, SOHO, Small Office Home Office, customer base already dabble with print ‘in-house’. We know this as they struggle in with minutes to spare, for our help when their, free with the PC printer, failed to produce 100 flyers for today’s local exhibition. Either it blew up under the strain or more likely ran out of ink or toner. Add to the fact that they are trying to print on paper stolen by their spouse from work or something on offer with a free bar of chocolate from a mail order stationer; the result is a rubbish presentation. Quite the opposite impression to what they were trying to make. Step forward the print professional; OK we do help with a quick and efficient fix, on-demand print is our business and we excel in our service. While the customer waits we print with the best quality results on a matching media and save the day, hooray! What better time to give advice on your customers print at home? Best he stops doing it as the running costs can be higher than our charges! We have tried this approach but customers do like to dabble and instant results delivered to their own desk without leaving the room is a real plus to a busy small business. Great for one off copies and internal consumption, but when print has to sell it needs to be professional. The home brew customer does need to step out for supplies though and we can help in two ways.

PrinT larger PrinT runS and larger PrinT FormaTS

Supply professional print advice on our print at home range of manufacturer matching inks and toners, plus the best paper for the job, split a ream or sell single sheets to discover amazing GP opportunities. Have you ever sold a sheet of parchment card for £1? Well big stationers, with supermarket style parking etc sell blister packs of decanted reams for fortunes and they have all started to print as well. Come on, we need your help to keep print in the high street. If we have to sell the top 100 stationery lines to satisfy our customers one stop shop demands, so be it. So who do we partner with for print consumables, who will give us assistance with point of sale and compatibility direction? March 2010 | Copy Shop News

Will there be enough margins to give this project shelf room? We are pleased to introduce our friends at JET TEC. The printer consumables market is constantly changing. With a noticeably significant rise in OEM prices, inkjet cartridge retailers are seeking an alternative product to offer to their customers -without compromising quality. The key to repeat business is to not only offer a product that saves the consumers pounds and pennies, but to also provide a product that delivers the results and quality it promises to. Finding a brand that is synonymous with both of these factors can be quite a struggle. As an industry mogul, you may be familiar with the ‘Jettec’ brand of compatible and remanufactured inkjet cartridges and recycled toners. Jettec has been the house brand of UK manufacturer Dynamic Cassette International (DCi) for over 13 years, and is currently sold throughout the UK and Europe by high street retailers, on-line stationers and large scale distributors. The Jettec range of inkjet cartridges gives its resellers a significant cost saving of around 50-60% in comparison with the OEM product, allowing them to benefit from healthy profit margins. But it is also well known for its award winning unique ‘Extralife’ technology which offers the consumers up to 100% more prints than can be obtained from the expensive OEM equivalent. The combination of these unique selling points allows you to offer your customers a high quality value for money consumable at a low price. DCi invest heavily in quality control, and print testing before despatch. This ensures that failure rates are kept to an absolute minimum, but also that brand image and reputation is not damaged. Everything from Research and Development, ink formulation and empty collections, right through to packaging design and distribution is carried out at DCi’s Lincolnshire factory. This allows them to be first to market with new market products, and to be flexible when it comes to product development. Jettec’s sister company The Recycling Factory collect over 225,000 empty inkjet cartridges per month. TRF work closely with Jettec dealers, enabling them to generate extra revenue from the empties they return. Jettec will credit anywhere up to £6.00 for each cartridge which can successfully be recycled. printout@copyshopnews.co.uk

READERS’ SCRIBES

RU UP FOR AN ELECTION? Oxford University researchers have discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes

Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.

THE WINALOT DIET I have a Labrador retriever. I was buying a large bag of Winalot at Tesco’s and was in line to checkout. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. On impulse, and thinking it was a stupid question I told her no, and that I was starting the Winalot Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time. But because I’d lost 50 pounds before I woke up in an intensive care ward, with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms, I was willing to try it again. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your trouser pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete, so I was going to try it again. I have to mention here that practically everyone in the queue was by now enthralled with my story. Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no - I’d been sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

It’s either my mum or my dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it’s Colin. • So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me “Can you give me a lift?” I said ‘Sure, you look great, the world’s your oyster, go for it.’ • So, I was in my car and I was driving along and my boss rang up and he said “You’ve been promoted”. And I swerved. And then he rang up a second time and he said “You’ve been promoted again”. And I swerved again. He rang up a third time and said “You’re Managing Director”. And I went into a tree. And a policeman came up and said “What happened to you?” And I said “I careered off the road”. • So I got home, and the phone was ringing. I picked it up, and said ‘Who’s speaking please? ‘And a voice said ‘You are.’ • I called my local swimming baths. I said ‘Is that the local swimming baths?’ He said ‘It depends where you’re calling from.’ • So I rang up a local building firm, I said ‘I want a skip outside my house.’ He said ‘I’m not stopping you.’ • “Doc, I can’t stop singing the Green, green grass of home.” “That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome.” “Is it common?” “It’s not unusual.”
