Yes we all lose an hour this month but will still have time to invest in two print shows, two Saints days, Mother’s Day and a healthy little run for Sports Relief. News inside includes three name changes, Vivid to Boss, Intec Printing Solutions better describes their products and M-Real becomes Metsä Board. So what’s in a name, and what do you tell your new friends how you make a living? We have a growing rebellion of our print club colleagues calling for a vote on a name change for the best part of the print industry. You are invited to join the debate on page 26 and help shape your marketing title under a more accurate job description banner. No jumping on the bandwagon on any new print processes please. Our eight million end users focus on results rather than our choice of production. They will be as confused with Nano or Mims as we have made them with Litho and Digital. No further clues just think outside the square then go back to the blatantly obvious. Enjoy a little March madness. Hare today gone tomorrow. Peter, do you copy? Foulkes

Students inspired by Oxford University Press visit For two groups of sixth form students, OUP opened their doors in Oxford to give the students an insight to the world of print. The visit which had two elements was part of the Proskills PrintIT! programme which aims to raise awareness and encourage students to consider careers in the printing and paper industries. The programme is hugely supported by industry and sponsored by DS Smith, GVMC and Heidelberg, to name a few, and links with local industry employers to provide a real experience for students. Ian Wilton at Oxuniprint who helped coordinate the visit said “The aim of the visit was to try to encourage young people into our industry and show them the different aspects of the print trade. As with most printers nowadays we have quite an ageing workforce and without the younger generation coming through, our industry will struggle in 10 years’ time.” As part of the trip students participated in a tour of the printing and finishing areas at Oxuniprint, the printing division of Oxford University Press, a discussion with two individuals who have done or are doing an NVQ plus viewed a showcase of videos of people in print. The second part of the visit took the students to Oxford University Press print museum. Students were able to tour the museum with a curator and were also given a graphic design task where they were allowed to create their own business cards which were printed so they could take them home with them. Mr Warham of Kennet School thoroughly enjoyed the visit and says the programme has inspired his students, “The visit to OUP has been a great

Save Darlo Poster Campaign A local business has been inundated with ‘beeps’ after launching a campaign to support Darlington FC. Lifelong Darlington fans, John and Andy Knowles from JAK Print and Design in Darlington have filled their shop front with posters to support the troubled club. The father and son team on North Road initially started using Face book and Twitter but then decided to use the power of their shop window on North Road asking drivers to show their support by beeping their car horn. Andy Knowles said: “The reaction has been overwhelming and it is clear to see that people of Darlington don’t want to lose their club. Almost every car has been beeping! It will be a very sad day for the town if the club is closed.” The picture shows Andy outside thanking drivers for showing there support. day’s experience. The class all found the day very useful in terms of their GCSE work and 20% of the class have said that it has influenced their career thoughts, with one student in particular who is very keen to progress this career route.” Ian Wilton continued, “As always with these sorts of days you wonder if the kids are going to get bored and what they are going to take away from it. On this occasion it went so smoothly and we tried to make it as interesting as possible for them. You could tell by the engagement from the kids that they thoroughly enjoyed their time at Oxuniprint/OUP and from the feedback I don’t think it could have gone any better.” Overall, pupils have found the visit interesting and well planned out with the designing of business cards being exceptionally well received. One pupil said the visit gave them a better understanding of the printing industry and linked jobs while another enjoyed finding out the history and how the industry has evolved and improved. “The visit has helped students understand the industry and learn a bit more about how it works and with 20% of a class being influenced by a visit; this is a great achievement from OUP and for PrintIT! It just shows that a small amount of time from employers can really influence a student’s career options and open avenues to them that they haven’t yet explored,” said Richard Moore, Proskills Print and Paper Industry lead. The PODi AppForum is back

Customer case studies will take centre stage at the PODi European AppForum which takes place in London on March 29. The last time PODi ran a major event in the UK was 2005. PODi returns to the London College of Communication for this one day conference which will feature case studies about real applications of digital printing in marketing and publishing. Speakers from digital printing businesses and their customers will share their experience of successful marketing campaigns, on-demand publishing and web to print applications. Tony Hodgson, Director of PODi in the UK, says: “The PODi AppForum is a unique formula in the industry. It is about best practice, not theory. It covers real examples of successful case studies involving digital print. It provides insight not just from printers, but from their customers too, on how digital print and cross-media benefits their businesses”. Talks will include a cross media customer acquisition campaign for a business services organisation, a web to print programme for a charity, a customer retention programme for a major utility and how print on demand supports a publishers growing e-book business. Tony Hodgson adds: “The AppForum is not just about suppliers and printers talking to each other. It adds the customer perspective: how digital printing is applied to help their business challenges. That’s what customers want to hear about.” Hodgson, who has just returned from PODi’s flagship AppForum event in the USA attended by 400 delegates, regards the event in London in March as the start of a series which he will take across Europe. He says: “I’m getting interest from people in other European countries, especially from Scandinavia, the Benelux region and Germany. Printers everywhere are wanting to change and are seeking leadership, direction and education to do that.”

About PODi PODi is a member-supported not for profit organisation with affiliates in the USA, UK and Australia. Its goals are to grow the market for digital print, help members grow their businesses and build a community of professionals who value sharing ideas and experience. PODi has been at the forefront of the digital printing industry for over 15 years. Ten years ago it discovered the trend for a new breed of printer called which it called “marketing service providers”. It has championed the use of personalisation, cross media and web to print since the beginning and grown the world’s largest collection of case studies of successful and innovative applications of digital printing. The new “Boss” brand identity reflects and re-enforces Vivid’s commitment to providing the very best quality in laminating supplies. It is important that they retain their established values from the Pro-Life brand, but at the same time develop a new and modern identity, more in line with the corporate image. By rebranding ProLife supplies to “Boss” they are ensuring that the right message is out there for their customers. www.vivid-online.com

A BRAND SO SUCCESSFUL THAT THE COMPANY IS CHANGING ITS NAME

Info-Tec Distribution Ltd. has announced that with immediate effect, it has changed its name to Intec Printing Solutions Ltd. due in part to its global success of the Intec Printing Solutions brand that was launched in 2009. Intec Printing Solutions Ltd. manufactures and sells the Intec family of extreme heavy stock multi-media colour digital printing solutions via a network of international distributors and resellers. These products are unique in terms of their capability and affordability and have, within a couple of years of launching, become a phenomenal global success. This success dwarfed everything else that Info-Tec was doing so last year Info-Tec Distribution started trading as Intec Printing Solutions to reflect the brand that the business had become synonymous with. Expansion into the Americas resulted in the formation of a subsidiary in the USA called Intec Printing Solutions Corporation, so the logical conclusion to this transformation process was to change the name of Info-Tec Distribution Ltd. to Intec Printing Solutions Ltd. and so completing its corporate rebranding. Intec Printing Solution Corporation’s parent company is now Intec Printing Solutions Limited. The company is now focused on developing the Intec brand globally through expansion into new countries, developing the sales channel in countries where they already sell and through growing the Intec product range. Setting new benchmarks in performance and capability, the Intec print engines have the ability to print on to a wide range of substrates from 55 gsm to 600 microns or 600 gsm. Handling media such as polyesters, cardboards, magnetic media, films, label stocks, envelopes and of course a wide range of speciality papers and cards the Intec printers can print onto small cards right through to 1.2 metre long sheets. All relevant communications and documentation should now refer to the company as Intec Printing Solutions Ltd. There are no other changes or implications – it is the same company with the same bank accounts, same tax references etc. It is purely a change of corporate name to match the trading style. Intec Printing Solutions Ltd., formerly Info-Tec Distribution Ltd. and originally a division of IPM Technology Ltd., was founded in 1989 and is privately owned by Ian Melville. The Company Headquarters is located in Poole, Dorset UK. For more information about Intec Printing Solutions Ltd. please visit: www. intecprinters.com

Konica Minolta wins BLI 5-star grade

Buyers Lab (BLI) has tested Konica Minolta’s bizhub PRESS C7000 and awarded it the BLI 5-star grade for short run colour consistency. Never before has a tested production unit received the BLI 5-star grade for short run colour consistency. As for processing speed, the bizhub PRESS C7000 with the EFI Fiery controller IC-306 outperformed all competing units tested by BLI with the lab’s own raster image processor (RIP) job stream. “The results achieved by Konica Minolta in the BLI test are clear evidence of the technological leadership that Konica Minolta is showing in the digital production print sector. By taking a customer intimate approach we understand the needs of our clients in the commercial print sector and have developed the bizhub PRESS range to meet those requirements”, states says Jonathan Wilson, Market Development Manager for Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). The bizhub PRESS C7000’s short run colour consistency is the best ever tested and has therefore earned it a 5-star rating for the least colour drift that BLI has seen to date. Along with these results goes processing speed. Konica Minolta’s production unit, together with the EFI Fiery controller, completed a 1.4 gigabyte RIP job stream faster than any other competing device. Wilson continued, “Naturally we are delighted with this unprecedented achievement in the BLI testing against a strong field of competitive systems. Our production print solutions provide quick printers with affordable systems that offer profitable ROI. www.konicaminolta.co.uk

1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%. The Saillat mill uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 150km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions. Saillat also recovers by-products from the furniture and framing industries which represents 27% of its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 88% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the onsite production of green energy (biomass). Commenting on the PRO-DESIGN Olympics prize launch, Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “We are delighted to have the UK’s fastest growing Colour Laser Paper, PRO-DESIGN listed in the NEMO catalogue for 2012, and are confident that the members will see real benefits from having our product to sell to their customers. The Olympics is something we are all very proud to see being held in the UK and I am sure the winning member will have a trip to remember for the rest of their lives.” PRO-DESIGN is International Paper’s colour laser range for professional laser printing, used by graphic reproduction houses, digital printers and copy centres. Its significant features include improved high whiteness 168 CIE quality. Roland DG celebrates Investors in People success

Roland DG (UK) recognises that a great team can make a huge difference to a business, which is why for the past 12 months they’ve strived and succeeded in gaining the Investors in People (IIP) accreditation. Roland DG’s ethos is founded on being the best rather than the biggest, delivering this through exceptional people and the service they provide. The IIP framework has focused the business and set the benchmark to ensure that Roland DG will continue to build a strong organisation that provides excellent training to staff and in turn, an extraordinary service to Roland DG customers. Fixing Twinflute Signs Like buses, where for ages there are none – then two come along together, there are now two new Laminaid clips to answer the problem of mounting twinflute signs on an upright support. Twin fluted plastic has been the material of choice for short term and event signage for many years, but is a notoriously problematic material to mount securely on a supporting upright. Following the successful launch of Laminaid TF clips – the first clip in the world designed for the fixing of twinflute signage, Wyzrds of Aylesbury have announced the debut of another new clip. To be known as Laminaid XL, this clip is designed for lightweight boards up to 10mm thick, where the earlier TF clip catered for the most popular board thicknesses of 4-6mm. Again , the clip is based on a plastic backplate which can be easily cabletied to an upright support. A pair of barbed nylon rivets pass through the sign and are pressed into the backplate with the thumbs. The result is a secure professional looking sign, in place of the previous clumsy and damaging method of cable ties through holes bored in the sign itself. Laminaid Clips are unique products with no predecessor, no competitor and solve a worldwide problem. Both the Laminaid TF and XL clips will make their public debut on the Wyzrds Stand at Sign & Digital Wyzrds 01296 586498 www.wyzrds.com

EPSON launches SureColor SC-S30600 printer Epson builds on the success of its wide format printer range for signage and POS applications with the SureColor SC-S30600.A 64-inch (162.6cm), four colour (CMYK), roll fed printer, the SC-S30600 sets a new price/performance ratio in this highly competitive sector. Designed from the ground up to offer efficient and environmentally friendly production at the lowest total cost of ownership, the SC-S30600 enables print firms, signmakers, quick print copy shops and repro centres to expand their service offering. The SC-S30600 can produce everything from posters, signs, banners, backlit panels and POS materials to vehicle wraps, interior decorations and exhibition displays. A wide range of roll media is supported, allowing users to print reliably and cost effectively on vinyl, PVC and clear film, photographic paper and a range of popular banner substrates. Richard Barrow, senior product manager at Epson Europe, says: “Setting up the SC-S30600 is fast and easy. Loading heavy media rolls, usually a two person job, can be handled by one operator with ease thanks to our unique jack. And media tensioning, traditionally only accessible from the front of the printer, is controllable from both front and rear, so operators don’t waste time going back and forth. This reduces set-up time and maximises productivity.” Epson’s precision engineering and proven Micro Piezo printhead

technology ensure continuous and trouble-free operation, minimising maintenance and lost production time. High volume workloads are handled with ease, with print speeds from 7.3 to 29.4m2/hour depending on printing mode; the former being typical for indoor poster use and the latter for outdoor banner applications. There is also a maximum quality mode for the most demanding close inspection work, which uses the printer’s full resolution of 1440 x 1440dpi. Epson has developed a new ink – Epson UltraChrome GS2 – designed to work perfectly with the SC-S30600 and Epson’s new generation of TFP printheads. UltraChrome GS2 builds on the strengths of UltraChrome GS (used in the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000) with a new yellow formulation that is lightfast for longer. UltraChrome GS2 is odourless, nickel-free and requires no special ventilation, allowing the SC-S30600 to be used in an office environment. Costs and environmental impact are reduced with the printer’s ENERGY STAR-qualified power efficiency. The Epson SureColor SC-S30600 will be demonstrated for the first time in the UK at Sign & Digital (Stand E70, 27th-29th March at the NEC, Birmingham). The printer is available from March 2012, priced at £11,995 www.epson.com

Mimaki’s JV400 launched

Mimaki’s continued commitment to innovative products and technologies sees the launch of a complete new range of wide format printers, new inks and environmentally friendly solutions for the sign, display and quick print markets. The new Mimaki JV400130LX and JV400-160LX feature state of the art Mimaki latex inks and are the first machines to incorporate Mimaki’s cutting edge print engine. This heralds the way for other ink types which will deliver a significant number of applications based upon the same platform and include Mimaki’s pioneering SUV ink; available shortly after the new latex machines. Mimaki’s latex ink delivers significant advantages over alternative solutions – requiring a very low heat to cure, opening up more materials, consuming substantially less energy and therefore minimising running costs. It is also the first latex solution to offer a white ink – which sits alongside six process colours with a vibrant yield and extended gamut. The Mimaki latex inks are quick drying and supplied in 600cc ink packs which when used in conjunction with Mimaki’s eco-cases reduce waste and allow for long unattended print runs. The 1.3m and 1.6m wide Mimaki JV400-LX printers feature a unique piezo print head, offering the usual advantages over alternative technologies – no requirement for frequent user head replacement, a stunning 4 picolitre dot size along with variable dot technology. The use of piezo heads further supports Mimaki’s environmental and sustainability credentials, with waste minimised and quality maintained throughout the printhead’s life. The Mimaki latex ink is an aqueous, resin based technology with proven eco friendly qualities and zero odour, making the machines ideal for installation in traditional print companies and graphics setups. Pre, print and post heaters typically running below 60°C in combination with built in drying fans aid the fast curing of the Mimaki latex ink. With no gassing off required; any post print lamination can take place immediately, shortening ‘total job time’ and enabling print suppliers to respond to short lead times. Coupled to Mimaki’s class leading print speeds – up to 18m2 / hour at 900 x 900dpi – the JV400-LX range delivers a compelling solution across a broad range of applications. President of Mimaki Engineering, Miko Noguchi comments on the company’s commitment to new products. “Mimaki is dedicated to bringing to market truly innovative and productive products,” he says, “These new printers are a terrific example of that dedication. The JV400 product line achieves faster print speed and higher print quality without compromise.” Available soon after the Mimaki latex range and utilising the same impressive print engine is Mimaki’s unique SUV ink set. Combining the flexibility of solvent with the durability of UV cured inks, the newly developed ink delivers a smooth, glossy result which is incredibly durable and vibrant. Featuring on the new Mimaki JV400-130SUV and 160SUV models, the same headline speeds of 18m2 / hour and high print quality as the latex models remain. The exceptionally high durability comes from the unique ink recipe – with components of the ink keying to the ink-receiving layer of the media. The surface of the ink is then cured using a UV process which results in a vibrant, durable and flexible finish making it ideal for banner production, pull ups and display materials – or any application where a combination of vibrant colour and a long lasting, scratch resistant print is important. Both new models in the JV400 family take advantage of Mimaki’s powerful and user friendly RasterLink6 RIP that allows the deposition of three layers of ink in one pass, including a base layer of white ink for printers that support white ink. Single-sided Vivid Lamination for Morgana Systems

Morgana Systems of Milton Keynes has announced that it has added the single sided lamination products of Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd, Coalville, to its wide range of post-press solutions. The Matrix Laminators from Vivid that are being provided by Morgana are the MX-370 and MX-530 models, offering 340mm and 500mm lamination film widths respectively, ideal for Laminating from SRA4 up to B2. Both systems are capable of handling substrate thicknesses 135gsm to 450gsm+. The Matrix systems have a semi-automatic feed and a fully automated separator. Gloss or matt prints can be produced on the laminator at speeds of up to 10 metres per minute. Commenting on the addition of the Vivid lamination products to the Morgana range, Ray Hillhouse, UK Sales Manager for Morgana, said: “In addition to the post-press product that Morgana design and build in Milton Keynes, we are always keen to offer as wide a range of finishing equipment as we can. Following a number of recent discussions with customers, we came to the conclusion that single sided lamination was one area where we needed to offer a high quality and effective solution. “The products provided by the team at Vivid Lamination Technologies were just what we needed. The semi-automatic Matrix machines that we have added to our range sit neatly between desktop encapsulation machines, which are inadequate for many of our users, and high end lamination equipment, which is too high a price for most digital print producers. “We have now added one of these machines to our extensive collection of showroom products, and have educated our UK sales team with regard to the features and benefits of these compact and affordable laminating solutions.” Bruce Cozens, Product Manager, Vivid Laminating Technologies, added: “The Matrix systems are now available to view in the Morgana showroom, and this complements Morgana’s excellent range of Digital finishing systems.” For further information on Morgana see www.morgana.co.uk

EFI’s new 3.2m dye-sub

EFI has announced availability of the EFI VUTEk TX3250r fabric printer, enabling customers to take advantage of the demands and requirements of the growing soft signage markets. The VUTEk TX3250r printer is a new 3.2-metre, production level solution that evolved from the first EFI industrial inkjet textile system, the VUTEk FabriVu, introduced in 2002. With the ability to print direct to textile and transfer paper, the VUTEk TX3250r is an ideal solution for users looking to grow their soft signage business with a production level printer, or to diversify their offering by converting traditional vinyl signage to a product with lower costs, a greener footprint, easier installation and higher margins. “The introduction of the TX3250r should help eliminate the soft signage cost barrier for our customers and enable them to capture the market for soft signage, and flags” said Scott Schinlever, senior vice president and general manager of Inkjet Solutions at EFI. “One benefit is the ability to print on textiles, opening new markets for customers while expanding existing capabilities. EFI also focused on exceeding customer expectations for quality and reliability, as we did with the revolutionary FabriVu production quality textile printer that was launched nine years ago.” The VUTEk TX3250r uses dye sublimation technology to dye, or sublimate, fabric fibres directly, so the fabric retains the same drape and soft hand customers prefer. This method achieves brighter colours than other textile printing methods and the final product is odourless. In addition, the TX3250r enables printing on polyester, which is a non-PVC material that is considered more eco-friendly than vinyl. Final printed images produced on the TX3250r can be washed, dried and folded without leaving marks, and reused.

EFI VUTEk TX3250r features • New, fast drying inks for unparalleled speed up to 1800ft2/hour (167m2/hour) • High resolution, 8 colour print capability for high margin printed displays and high density backlit signs • Fast-4 (CMYK) production speed for high volume flag and banner jobs • Direct to textile or indirect via transfer printing process, so users can offer more materials For more information on the VUTEk TX3250r soft signage printer and EFI, visit www.efi.com

14 | DUPLO | COPY SHOP NEWS | March 2012

Duplo the answer for Anton’s secure digital work Anton Group’s digital division has grown significantly since the company’s move to their Laindon facility in 2007. With Anton’s entire production now under one roof, the digital division has become the fastest growing department and is now boasts 8 Kodak Nexpress engines.

H

aving stepped into quick print in 2002 with their first Nexpress, Anton’s digital division played a very small role in the business, and employed just two staff. Initially, finishing for digital was a very manual process, with larger digital runs being finished on existing litho finishing kit. As the division grew, the need for efficient digital finishing became ever more apparent. However, the growth of variable data work was the main driver for Anton’s latest investment. Over the last 4 years, this growth has now seen an estimated 90% of all digital work becoming variable. The key factor in choosing Duplo according to Anton’s Digital Press Manager, Bryan Knight was the integrity of tracking digital work. “During our digital expansion, we have acquired some large, high profile accounts who require complex variable data work. Much of this work contains very sensitive data and as a result, integrity has to be priority number one. With the intelligent barcoding system on the Digital System 5000 Pro, we are able to track every single booklet that it produces. Any errors are flagged up immediately and the rest of the run is not affected.” In addition to the Digital Bookletmaker, Anton invested in Duplo’s latest versatile digital cutting/ creasing solution, the DC745e. With customer run lengths decreasing, along with the time in which the job is required by the customer, the DC-745e has enabled the variety of applications in Anton’s digital portfolio to expand without affecting production. Previously complex cut and creased jobs required skilled operators to setup and run specialist machinery such as the cylinder or guillotine. Again, utilising intelligent barcoding, the DC-745e takes the risk

away from human error as the jobs are finished automatically. Knight added, “Our efficiency in digital is very much reliant on our finishing. Using manual operations such as guillotining, whilst useful for some tasks, can be very labour intensive in others. To become fully efficient, we need our processes to become as automated as possible. The DC-745e has reduced what was previously a bit of a bottleneck for us. Some applications that require not only cutting and creasing, but also perforating or scoring, were previously very laborious and multiple devices were required to achieve the required finish. Not only are we now seeing a saving in time, but also a reduction in wastage with the first sheet becoming a useful product.” Since the installation, the relationship between Duplo and Anton has flourished. Knight commented, “The level of service and support we have received from Duplo has been first class. Our Duplo service engineers have been very flexible to our bespoke requirements and have supported us from the word go. The level of training provided has enabled us to maximise productivity from our new lines and we now have efficient digital setup required to surpass our customers’ expectations.” Duplo UK Managing Director, Tony Lock commented: “The research and development that goes into our new lines comes directly from customer feedback. Being able to boast customers like The Anton Group gives us a greater platform to develop our range. With Automated Precision the key factor to our products efficiency, our relationship with Bryan and Anton’s digital division is a significant milestone in our business’ development.” www.duplouk.com

From Celluloid to Silicone Chips By the time you read this column you may have been to or just missed Focus on Imaging, the annual photography exhibition at the NEC which is now dominated by all things digital rather than the film based industry that originally spawned it. Martin Christie writes…

I

n the twelve years since I have been an interested visitor I have followed the progression from celluloid to silicone which has been reflected in the exhibitors and products, a mirror of my own professional progress from the dark room to the digital processor and printer. I am often asked if I miss film. Usually I am asked this by a keen amateur new to photography and for whom the whole laborious traditional media is a novelty rather than a chore. I only miss being able to give the film to someone else to sort out the colour management. I’ll be reporting on Focus on Imaging next month, but looking forward to it as these are interesting times. While one of the longest running names in the industry, Kodak, battles with its creditors, others like Canon and Nikon who have firmly grasped the technology challenge are indulging in an escalating electronics arms race at the premium end of the market. At the moment it is Nikon who have edged ahead with the launch of a 36 megapixel SLR. Aimed at the professional market, or the very serious amateur, this model is important in a number of ways, but perhaps most significantly because it bursts through the threshold of a widely accepted pixel equivalent with conventional film. A 35mm colour negative or positive was reckoned to be rated at about 25-30 megapixel in terms of the equivalent information potentially stored on its surfaces. Breaking this boundary therefore has more historical relevance than the simple launch of yet another model. There will be plenty of those at Focus, as all manufacturers scramble to claim a slice of various segments of the market. The multi function phone has done much to bury the bottom entry level as there is no point having another digital device when you are only communicating by ‘facebook’. In fact, judging by Hewlett Packard’s slump in profits from 2011, the “smart” phone has knocked a big hole in the PC market too. The so-called “bridge” cameras, like the Fuji HS20 reviewed last month, are set to claim the middle ground of the enthusiast who wants an adaptable camera for all occasions without carrying a bag full of lenses and accessories. The top end is now set to be served by a new generation of mega-mega pixel beasts like the Nikon D800. They will be in short supply, so don’t expect one to be slung around the neck of a customer just yet. But in the longer term – and that’s no more than the next twelve months these days – as the competition reacts more and more high specification cameras will be bringing yet bigger images to your door along with the implications for processing and printing. RAW files, Digital Negatives, and 50Mb Jpegs will be standard issue as well as 32 Gb memory cards. I think it was probably eight or nine years ago now but I remember buying a 32Mb flash card at Focus, thinking I had a bargain and that it would last me a long time! A year is now a long time in the digital revolution. Printers will inevitably occupy quite a bit of floor space at the NEC. One new device that probably won’t be there is the Lomond A4 colour inkjet using Memjet technology, which we had a little look at recently. If you haven’t heard of Memjet techology, don’t worry because I hadn’t until it was drawn to my attention. The principle of

inkjet printing is well established and set to play a wider role in many forms of printing as it develops. The one possible weak spot of conventional inkjet printers however is the head itself, which covers the paper by moving back and forth at a synchronised speed. If there is going to be a problem, it is most likely to be the head, whether a blockage of the jets or a misalignment, or just simply that it has an awful lot of work to do accurately while shuttling to and fro at high speed. The Memjet principle is deceptively simple – just have one long head so only the paper moves. Free of the inevitable limited speed of a moving head, the Memjet can achieve incredibly fast printing speeds, comparable with any copier – in the case of the Lomond A4 printer one sheet every second regardless of colour coverage. It can also print borderless and onto a wide range of coated or uncoated paper. Obviously the best results are on matched coated paper, and colour profiles are available from the manufacturer, but just in a brief trial run we found acceptable results on everything from plain letterheads to full colour photographs. As well as speed, the printing is low cost, being pennies rather than pounds, and obviously without any click charges. It will print onto anything from 70gsm up to 300 gsm, the latter feeding into an individual manual feeder at the back which will also take other special media. The main tray will take 250 sheets of standard paper. High speed printing is achieved by utilising a unique patented user replaceable printhead technology based on MEMS (or Micro Electronic Mechanical Systems) made in the USA by a company named MemJeT Inc. The MemJet printhead contains a record number of print nozzles – up to 70,400 to be precise. Comparing this to other inkjet printheads today, the Memjet printhead has 17 times more nozzles and reaches a speed of up to 704 million drops per second with a droplet size of 1 picolitre. At the moment it’s only available in the UK as an A4 desktop – quite a bit bulkier than your average desktop inkjet but only a little bit heavier. There is no A3 version but a large format – 44inch – is on the way later in the year. The four colour cartridges are filled with dye inks and are recyclable – 50ml each for cyan, magenta and yellow, and 100ml for black. Based on average coverage the little tanks will do over six thousand pages, with the black quite a bit more. Overall the Lomond is a sturdy, purpose built little printer that will certainly have a place in some digital print shops – probably near the counter. At considerably less than a grand to buy and with low running costs and a broad appetite for different types of media if fills the demand for a one off or short run instant quality print, without interrupting a perhaps more profitable run on the main shop colour workhorses. You can see a video promotion of the machine at: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_ detailpage&v=LHAarL3rXWU#t=15s

prints and it can deliver them very quickly. The new model replaces previous ones, including the Olmec which we did try out a few years back, and is a little slimmer all round. These types of printers will take a few hard knocks without trouble and are widely used by event photographers, and theme parks, which says a lot for their performance and reliability, and Citizen obviously have a long history not only with this type of printer but all manner of office equipment. For the full range take a look at www. citizen-europe.com From printers to paper and with the Focus photographic exhibitiion in view, something that caught my eye was a press release from the Confederation of European Paper Industries. Not a body I would normally be aware of but it is apparently celebrating its 20th anniversary and as a result is launching a paper based competition to make us more aware of the media we all use and take for granted every day. As they point out in a refreshingly simple and unpretentious press release, paper has been around for a long time, and is essential to our communication, comfort, and creativity. “Paper Moments” is a challenge to present a visual representation of paper in use in all its many forms, and is open to anyone within the industry with a camera. Judges will be looking not just for technical expertise with a lens but composition, and originality so it could be virtually anything that catches your eye. The competition closes at the end of May so you have a bit of time to get creative. More details and examples at www.flickr.com/groups/cepiphotocompetition2012 Colour Confidence will be at Focus with their whole range of colour management products for monitors, printers and cameras. We tried the basic entry Colour Studio kit last year and liked it so much we bought one. It comes with a portable pop-out grey scale board for camera white balance calibration and a Kodak colour sample kit for adjusting prints to file. The new package comes with the latest X-rite Mikuni Monitor Display calibration tool rather than the old I-1 which can be used on multiple computers so is ideal for getting all the screens in the studio up to spec. You don’t have to be a colour management wizard to install and use it and it does make a big difference when debating colour issues with a customer if you can tell them that the screen has been properly calibrated.

Another printer, this time directed very much at the photo market is the Citizen CY, which is another one of these little dye-sublimation boxes, spitting out laminated prints at 6x4in or A5 just like people expect when they ask for a ‘proper photo print’. With the gradual demise of the high street mini-lab, this is a more frequent enquiry and explaining the difference between that and an inkjet or a toner print is a regular task. We have tested several of these in the past and they are high quality and very robust and reliable. You buy the media as a complete package – ink and paper on a roll – so one is done when the other is. The colour is fused into the paper and coated to give a high gloss finish. A media pack will cope with six or seven hundred individual

New and Improved Rey International Paper has announced significant quality improvements to its Rey Text and Graphics range, part of its eco-friendly range of Rey Papers. The range has been improved with a new bright white shade of 170 CIE, together with the addition of a smoother surface, all of which will add significantly to the consistent high quality reproduction performance of the Rey grades. The Rey range is produced at International Paper’s Saillat mill in France, which is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%. The Rey Text and Graphics range is PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) endorsed, which means that the wood used to make the paper is from sustainably managed forests. The Rey range is also EU Ecolabel accredited, which is the official European eco-certification. This label is awarded only after strict assessment of a product’s impact on the environment – throughout its life cycle from raw material through to distribution. Available in both cut sizes, folio sheets and reels, The Rey Text and Graphics range is available in a range of grammages from 80gsm to 160gsm. Commenting on the recent product improvements, Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “Our Saillat mill has always had a reputation for producing high quality products and our quality improvements on Rey Text & Graphics will clearly help our partners grow their sales over the coming months.” www.internationalpaper.com/uk or contact Mike Robertson, e: mike.robertson@ipaper.com

CSN here, do you copy? A

s major print industry players your opinion is sought ... what’s in a name? What part of the print industry do you work in? Do you copy, print, or duplicate for your on-demand customers, maybe litho, di-sub, screen, xerox images onto media in the instant part of the print industry? Is the printing process important to the end-user, do they care whether you use ink, toner, wax, laser, analogue or digital? Do you still advertise in Yellow Pages under copying and duplicating or that hidden category under ‘digital’. Check out www.digitaluk.co.uk No not for print, the whole world is going digital and the process is named everywhere. The site is strictly for advice on TV switchovers. So back to our million impressions question? Who are we and what are we doing? Maybe the term copying is as old as the hard copy originals we not so frequently place on our platen glass, as we now print from files arriving by email, more often than USB stick, so is the copy shop dead? No way, we have just evolved into professional purveyors of fine print. Try sticking that in a chapter of Yellow Pages! CSN started out 14 years ago to unite the instant part of the print industry. We asked Dean Cook, owner of the Magazine Production Company, for his views as he is a joint founder of CSN magazine and designed the existing and previous mast heads, and has kept an eye on how the indsutry has evolved. “The frontline 3500 UK print shop keepers that were too small to be considered by the litho trade press had never before been encouraged to share ideas in the print-for-pay arena. Our common goals were to make our four million or so customers look good on paper by producing short run colour for the first time”. These days, the CSN readership has grown to 36,000 + professional print club members who serve in our 6,600 print rooms and shops. As litho companies have invested in our technology (for customer requirements not fitting into their traditional 5K minimum run, one week turn round, rigid data printing), we have grown our readership to encompass them along with FM and in-plants.

It’s as Easy as…123Flex

While other magazines circulation has decreased, here at CSN and sister title DPS, digital print shop news, have grown considerably. Still focusing on the faster response side of the industry that sell direct to a growing 8 million SOHO, small office home office, customer base, CSN reaches the parts of the quick print industry other titles cannot reach. Your help is required to shape the future of your very own trade press. Copy Shop News needs a new title to best describe the changing industry we all work in. Leaving the litho only print factories to their own thing we want to differentiate the ‘previously known as instant prints’, part of the industry. Print -On-demand is old hat and not really customer friendly, so what do we do different to the industrial site, no go intercommed reception big boy printers. Well, we serve people in person, in a professional manner. We are not an amateur DIY print service, although we are definitely enthusiasts. So where do we draw the line? We can be asked. We educate on preparing artwork for print. We love new business and can design from scratch. Advice is readily available on file sizes and how to save software design to print ready artwork. Listening to our own shop’s customers they call us their printers but still ask us for stuff to satisfy promotional goods and work clothing, We are open to all and always approachable. We are their ‘face-to-face’ print professionals and offer a fast efficient service. How we do what we do for them is not important, the finished product is key and when fit for purpose will win repeat business. Please share your marketing expertise by offering a few ideas on what we should all call our part of this wonderful print industry. As most of us offer a design service and maybe even a bit of copy writing can we keep to spellings as in the dictionary, Express with an E please and Quick without the kicking K will be a good lead to our customers as the new name will also be used as a professional body sharing standards recognisable by the public. Answers on a postcard please, although these days we do also accept email, Ha! Thanks for your anticipated help. Regards, Peter: editor@copyshopnews.co.uk

TheMagicTouch introduce a new addition to their existing MagiCut textile vinyl range. The newly developed ‘123Flex™’ has unique properties enabling quick and consistent production, superb cutting and weeding, with only 3 second pressing time and hot peel release. The 123Flex can also be applied at lower temperatures with variable dwell times to assist in combating the ‘scorching’ effect common to many textiles and fabrics when applied at 160c and above. The PU coated product has outstanding opacity, washability and is available in either for 5m, 10m and 25m rolls. The initial offering will consist of 20 vibrant colours including 5 stunning neon versions, all very competitively priced. In addition to 123Flex is the introduction of two new entry level plotters to assist those yet to benefit from this ever increasing popular method of garment decoration. The new Graphtec Cameo A3 plotter/cutter comes complete with “Print & Cut” software offering an entry level option for less than £300 including VAT. Also available is the new MagiCut 720 (600mm) production plotter for fast cutting of all flex, flock, and glitter, pearl and reflective products, also representing fantastic value for money at less than £600. Bird Brains A group of girlfriends, all aged 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the waiters there were handsome, with tight trousers and nice bums. Ten years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Rabbit resuscitation... A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. “I feel terrible,” he explained. “I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it.” The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. They finish their meal and pay. “That will be £4.50,” The man reached into his pocket and pulled out the exact amount. They do this every day till Friday. “The usual?” she asked. “No, today is Friday. I’ll have steak and a coke.” “Me too.” says the ostrich. They finish and pay. “That will be £10.95” The man reached in and pulls out the exact amount again just like all week. The waitress was dumb-founded. “How is it that you always have the exact amount?” “Well,” says the man. “I was cleaning my attic and I found a dusty lamp. I rubbed it and a genie appeared.” Wow!” said the waitress. “What did you wish for?” “I asked that when I needed to pay for something, the exact amount would appear in my pocket.” “Amazing! Most people would ask for a million dollars. But what’s with the ostrich?” “Well,” said the man. “I also asked for a chick with long legs.”

High Target A young salesman, who was also an avid golfer, found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured that if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off, an

old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old man to join him. To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age, I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally laid. The old man offered one more comment, “Of course, when I was your age, that pine tree was only 3 feet tall.”
