LONDON CALLING 3D TAKES DUPLO INTO NEW DIMENSION
The UK’s premium print finishing event London Calling 3D, hosted by Duplo and Finishing Alliance partners Friedheim and Renz has been hailed as the most successful print finishing event ever, with over 250 visitors over the two day event at the BFI IMAX cinema, Waterloo. Sales in excess of £250,000 have also given the hosts an instant return on investment as well as the show’s VIP evening being seen as a key networking event for the UK print industry. Now in its third year, the London Calling event series has grown year on year. Last year’s event at the TATE Modern attracted over 150 visitors, but an increase of over 65% makes London Calling 3D, the most successful ever. With visitors travelling from as far north as Glasgow, and as far south as Torquay, the event highlights the value seen in finishing in today’s market. Highlights of the show were the new DC-745e digital cutting/creasing system and the ESKO
Kongsberg iXE-10 digital die-cutting table. The former was even demonstrated live, by Duplo UK Managing Director, Tony Lock in front of a 100 strong crowd at the events VIP evening, showing automated precision technology in action. The cross-media invitation campaign has been an extremely successful venture for the hosts, and feedback has also been received in a variety of mediums. Gary Peeling, Managing Director of Precision Printing tweeted: “London Calling 3D, Tony and Duplo team, great event, refreshing to see a print brand and finishing would you believe! Marketing with such style.” Duplo UK Marketing Manager, Andy Pike commented: “This year’s London Calling event has been a great success for Duplo and the Finishing Alliance on a number of levels. Visitor numbers and more importantly sales figures are of course major drivers, however, demonstrating new technologies and in turn inspiring creativity in our customers has been a key to our success. 3D technology is everywhere at the moment, and print can play a big part in this, in particular finishing.” Planning for next year’s event has already begun and Duplo are inviting customers to submit their suggestions for London Calling 4. Visit the event microsite www. duplolondoncalling. com to submit your ideas.
Support for PrintIT! The Brighton based printing company Colourfast were the first company in the UK to become a PrintIT! supporter when it was launched during Duplo’s London Calling event on 21-22 September. The PrintIT! supporter package is specifically designed for companies with a turnover under £5 million, who can use PrintIT! branding in their promotional material and participate in the twinning programme, gaining
valuable commercial exposure. The PrintIT! programme has attracted support from most equipment suppliers since its launch in 2005 and encouraged more than 120,000 students to consider a career in the industry. The PrintIT! supporter package will help printers engage with schools and ensure students develop industry relevant skills, in turn heightening awareness of the wide range of career opportunities
available in print. Established in 1984 as a Canon Colour Copy Centre, Colourfast are a pioneer of colour printing and for the last 13 years have been sharing expertise and best practice through Copy Shop News. The company’s Marketing Director Peter Foulkes believes PrintIT! has a major role to play in the industry’s ongoing development. “ We need new blood to run our businesses. Printers will always be driven by people, and that goes for the equipment too ! ,” he says. “The PrintIT! supporter package will allow smaller printers to take a
leading role in the important work we are doing to encourage talented young people into the industry. We’re delighted to welcome Colourfast on board as a PrintIT! supporter,” says Proskills Deputy CEO Tom Bowtell. For an annual investment of just £200 print companies can become a PrintIT! supporter and join the programme’s wider network of sponsors. GERMANY TO HOST FESPA DIGITAL 2014
On this course customers learn how to prepare and apply vinyl, from flood coating, to applying print to board and windows. Attendees also learn basic lamination and mounting techniques. Those attending the course were a mixture of those who were new to digital print, or were looking to diversify into sign-making from other allied industries. As Marc Busby, Roland DG Academy Trainer, outlines: “Often it is the application and finishing tasks of sign-making that concern new customers most, from how to put lettering on a sign or vehicle, to how to apply graphics to windows. This course shows you how to prepare, apply and ensure a smooth bubble-free finish, and is a not to be missed course for anyone new to wide-format or looking to refresh their skills”. More details on this and other Academy courses can be found at www. rolanddg.co.uk/academy

FESPA Digital Man has started mapping his journey beyond 2013, picking Munich, Germany, as the destination for the 2014 Digital event. The dates for the 2014 event are confirmed as Tuesday 20th to Friday 23rd May. The Munich show will follow the forthcoming Barcelona Digital exhibition (21 to 24 February 2012) and FESPA 2013 - the flagship ‘screen + digital + textile’ event - which goes to London, UK in 2013 (25 to 28 June 2013). FESPA’s European community benefits from the fact that the shows move from city to city, making the events accessible and affordable for print service providers from different regions. For exhibiting companies, this pattern ensures that the visitor audience is constantly refreshed, connecting suppliers with diverse decision makers and buyers year after year. “We’re excited about returning to Munich three years from now”, comments Neil Felton, managing director of Exhibitions and Events. “It was a very successful host city for our main FESPA event in 2005 and 2010, the city has universal appeal, and the spacious and practical venue is popular with exhibitors and visitors alike.” He continues: “FESPA has always had a strong connection to Germany, with four record breaking events in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg over the last seven years, and a loyal base of support from German printers, including hundreds of members of BVDM, our national association. “Southern Germany in particular delivers a strong visitor audience from throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other central European countries, as well as being accessible for printers from Benelux, Italy and UK, all of which are key markets for wide format. Those factors, combined with the stability and robustness of the German economy, point to this as a good choice for our next Digital show.” As with all FESPA events, surplus revenues from FESPA Digital 2014 will be reinvested in the wide format printer community through FESPA’s programme of educational and knowledge-sharing projects, directly and through FESPA’s national member associations. For further information about all FESPA events, visit www.fespa.com.

HP European Latex Applications Tour hits the UK and Ireland HP has announced dates for the UK and Ireland legs of its European Latex Applications tour, designed to demonstrate the vast opportunities available to Print Service Providers (PSPs) using HP Latex printing technologies. Central to the tour is a 16.5m long customised truck and trailer, which will embark on a roadshow across the UK, having already visited a host of European countries over recent months. Designed to inspire and show how incorporating HP Latex printers, inks and compatible HP substrates into their operations can deliver business enhancing opportunities to PSPs, the events will feature informative presentations, customer testimonials, hands-on workshops and live product demonstrations on a 152.4cm (60in) HP Designjet L25500 Printer. The UK dates are as follows: · Tuesday 15th November, Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey · Thursday 17th November, Motorcycle Museum, Solihill, West Midlands · Monday 21st November, Easter Road Stadium, Edinburgh · Wednesday 23rd November, Lancashire Cricket Club, Manchester · Friday 25th November, White Hart Lane, London · Monday 28th November, Ramada Plaza, Belfast · Wednesday 30th November, AVIVA Stadium, Dublin · Friday 2nd December, Curvaheen Park Stadium, Cork The HP Latex Applications Tour will focus on how users can expand their creative applications offering and undertake a host of innovative graphic arts projects by maximising the multi-substrate printing capability of latex printers. As well as the HP Designjet L25500 Printer, these also include other print solutions, such as the new HP Scitex LX820 and LX850 Printers. Additionally, the road show will explain the environmental benefits offered by HP Latex Printing solutions and how these technologies allow
PSPs to limit the impact of their operations on the environment, while also fulfilling certain stipulations required of their own customers. HP Latex Inks provide print durability and display permanence comparable to eco-solvent inks and low-solvent inks, and their water-based formulation helps reduce the impact of printing on the environment. From durable outdoor signage to odourless prints for indoor displays, HP Latex Inks provide high productivity printing and broad media versatility across both coated and uncoated substrates. Sessions will showcase the new market opportunities enabled by the versatility of latex ink including non-traditional signage applications, such as wallpaper; indoor decorative textiles, printing on uncoated fabrics and fine art canvas reproductions. Previously impossible applications, such as printing for enclosed spaces, such as lifts, or places were strict regulations are in place, like in hospitals and restaurants are also possible using HP Latex Ink printers. To register for a session please visit www.latextour.com , or for more information, contact 0800 408 0784.
Mimaki programme helps companies expand their horizons As part of an exciting incentive scheme, Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, is offering print companies the opportunity to expand their horizons by investing in a state of the art Mimaki JV34-260 “baby grand” outdoor durable printer. To assist companies in upgrading, Hybrid is providing a £5,000 trade in for their existing 1m wide or larger outdoor durable printer. The Mimaki JV34-260 uses a double array of the latest generation print heads to deliver a combination of ultra high quality output coupled to speeds of almost 30m2 per hour. With a sizeable printing width of 2.6m it greatly expands productivity as many graphics applications (such as banner stands, exhibition backdrops, pull ups – and surprisingly large banners) can be printed landscape and therefore vastly quicker than if they were output down the length of the roll. The staggered arrangement of the two banks of print heads delivers an unprecedented output speed and with Mimaki’s vibrant, durable and fast drying SS21 inkset available as standard, printing companies can significantly expand their volume of output with the Mimaki JV34-260. The printer benefits from a two year, fully comprehensive warranty, powerful RasterLink Pro RIP package and a highly competitive list price. An optional Mimaki Bulk Ink System reduces ink costs by 20% and suits volume production applications perfectly.
Hybrid’s national sales manager, John de la Roche, points to the value of the machine as a key reason for companies to invest. “Hybrid’s lucrative offer confirms how attainable the JV34-260 is to any printing company. The Mimaki JV34-260 can really add a competitive edge to your print capabilities – and getting a £5,000 allowance for your old machine makes it even more attractive.” Companies wishing to take advantage of the offer should contact their authorised Mimaki reseller or Hybrid directly, and a demonstration machine is installed at Hybrid’s UK headquarters. The Mimaki JV34-260 is also available as a dye sublimation model – and makes for a very attractive proposition, delivering transfer paper printing at a size especially suitable for exhibition graphics, retail point of sale and soft signage markets. Potential Mimaki JV34-260 customers who opt for the outdoor durable SS21 inks will also be eligible for Hybrid’s ground breaking – and very successful – Let’s Do MORE! rebate linked recycling scheme, where a valuable ink credit is earned through collecting spent solvent cartridges for collection by Hybrid prior to their recycling. Further details on this can be found by visiting www.LetsDoMORE.co.uk and information on the complete Mimaki range is available at www. hybridservices.co.uk.

Lovephotobooks.com launch relies on perfect marriage
L
ovephotobooks.com is a new, fun, fast and easy to use online personalised photobook service available from Leeds based Hollingworth & Moss Ltd. This is the second online printing venture launched by the company in the last six years. The company started out 45 years ago as a family run, book binder and has merged its traditional skills with the latest online, digital printing and binding technologies, to deliver very specific and successful on-demand book services. With the launch of www. lovephotobooks.com, Hollingworth & Moss has taken print and binding to new levels. “Quality is the key differentiator,” says Richard Hollingworth, who runs the company with his brother Paul. “We researched the photobook market in detail and we weren’t impressed with other offerings. As experienced book binders we could see that we had something better to offer, we take huge amounts of pride in ensuring that each photobook is printed and hand bound to the highest of standards.” Product innovation has required capital investment – consequently, the latest arrival at the company’s 8,500 sq ft factory is a 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro 9900 inkjet printer, which fulfils a number of requirements. “We needed a large format machine which would produce both covers and content for our range of photobooks, and it had to be capable of very high quality print as we’re aiming at professional photographers as well as the family user. The Epson Stylus Pro 9900 fitted the bill. It has an 11 colour ink-set with a very wide gamut, which we find especially accurate for skin tones The Epson Stylus Pro 9900 was supplied by Barry Singleton at Fastek who now provides on going service and support. Richard cites this as a big factor in the decision. “Barry was very patient when we went through dozens of tests on the Epson, especially with a challenging range of substrates. The broad range of the Epson 9900 is impressive with numerous capabilities, we are especially keen on using canvas covers for our classic range of photobooks which are very durable and help provide a bright and beautiful
image representation.” The company prints on semi matte photo papers for the photobook contents and hybrid polyester canvas for the covers to achieve the quality effects customers want. Richard continues: “As well as producing top quality results, we have found the Epson Stylus Pro 9900 to be an easy machine to run, it’s very quiet; we like the auto cut-off feature and we’re impressed by how quickly and easily rolls can be changed over. We found that in order to maximise efficiency and minimise make ready time, it works best in conjunction with the EFI Colorproof XF RIP, mainly because it takes the processing task away from the machine.” The investment in the Epson printer is opening up other new possibilities by printing on self-adhesive vinyls and wallpaper material. “We have started to attract new work, notably through a photographer who was impressed by the Epson printer’s quality and came to us for a series of wallpaper murals they had been asked to produce for a well known pub chain. This shows we’re now open for business for all kinds of indoor sign and display work,” says Richard. Grabbing the online on-demand print opportunity Hollingworth & Moss is no stranger to clever online print and bind ventures. Originally providing academic institutions and libraries with a quality hand binding service, typically compiling journals into bound volumes for archiving, and also rebinding and restoring old books, the demand for this type of work started to dwindle in the late 90s. So, when Paul and Richard became joint MDs in 2005 they looked around for fresh ideas to add to and energise their business. The launch of mythesis.co.uk was a logical evolution for the company and in keeping with its academic links. Having provided a thesis binding service to students for many years, the brothers hit upon a new way of supplying these documents. “We realised that we could save students a lot of effort, and have a great new business opportunity, if we could accept the information online, print their pages, and mail them a bound thesis,” says Richard. The result was mythesis.co.uk, using software specially developed by Hollingworth & Moss, which was the first service of its kind in the UK. “We’ve built this into a global brand with a £250,000 annual turnover in a few short years,” explains Richard. “It also showed us the way forward, that we could combine our traditional high quality bookbinding craft with modern technology to create unique and profitable products.” Today Hollingworth & Moss, which employs 32 staff and generates a £1.2m turnover, has much to celebrate. It has successfully evolved to become the UK’s market leader in academic library binding whilst delivering specialist book printing services online to maximise its production facilities. It has planning permission to extend its premises by another 6,000 sq ft in order to house a ‘digital suite’ – more evidence that a successful combination of the traditional and modern has seen Hollingworth & Moss through the worst of the recession and into an optimistic future. www.epson.co.uk www.hollingworthmoss.co.uk Tel.0113 243 8642

New Clip To Crack a Sign Fixing Problem
W
yzrds Co. Ltd of Aylesbury, has introduced a new signage solution to the worldwide problem of securely mounting signage made from twin flute plastic and similar materials. Fluted Polypropylene board, known as “twin-flute” is very popular with sign makers, especially for short term and event signage, but is a notoriously problematic material to mount securely on a supporting upright. That is, until now. A solution has just been launched that provides a secure fixing method to ensure signs and notices remain in the correct position and looking good. LAMINAID TF Clips are two piece plastic clips which, when locked together through the top and bottom of a twin flute sign, provide secure damage free mounting and ideal display positioning. The transparent front plate has two self penetrating spikes which are pressed through the board and lock into the back plate securely. The back plate incorporates two sprung and two rigid feet for maximum grip to prevent the sign from slipping down or blowing round and out of vision. The flexible link between the sign and the tight mounting point allows the sign to spill wind, thus reducing resistance. Multiple fixing methods enable attachment of the sign to any surface such as poles, rails, chain link, or even flat fences and walls. Pat Lennard, Managing Director of Wyzrds, the creator of Laminaid TF explains: “Laminaid TF was invented to solve the twin flute mounting
Mutoh ValueJet 1324 and 1624 printers will impress signmakers and print service providers alike – all of whom are very welcome to attend. Visitors to the Mutoh ValueJet Open Days will be able to attend either a morning or afternoon demonstration session of their choice, with a buffet lunch either before or after their session. We’re also excited to welcome the first ever visitors to our brand new Digital Print Innovation Centre during these Open Days.” To book your space at one of the Mutoh Valuejet Open Days in Maidenhead or Derby, or to arrange your own visit to the Digital Print Innovation Centre, call now on 01332 228150 or email info@dpi-uk.com.
dilemma, and we’re expecting it to rapidly become one of those ‘How did we ever manage before?’ accessories. It does the job brilliantly and saves time, as well as providing an extra profit centre to the sign trade in these hard times. This innovative gadget is physically small but offers huge benefits to both signmakers and their clients. For the first time, the functions of fixing and display are separated and the requirements of each are met successfully, without compromising either. We’re all familiar with the sight of limp and battered signs hanging from cable ties through ragged holes bored in the corrugated plastic. Their effectiveness is seriously reduced by their fixing method, which can result in a dissatisfied client for the signmaker. Now with Laminaid TF Clips, there is a solution.” Laminaid TF can be secured with a cable tie (as pictured) or a variety of fixings including a screw or nail through the centre of the clip into a tree, fence or wall where ties cannot be used. As an alternative to cable ties, twist wire for strength, rubber bands for one day events, or even cotton twine for economy, can all be used. The signmaker’s view comes from AA Signs General Manager Andrew Banyard, who trialled 1,000 units and says ”We reuse the majority of the signs we produce and the Laminaid TF clip has provided us with a better way of fixing signs, giving a more professional and hopefully longer lasting product. We have recently completed a test event for the 2012 Olympic Games with the new TF clip, which proved really successful. From our perspective this is a great new product which is perfect for our application.” For Further information please contact Wyzrds.Co. Ltd: Tel: 01296 586498, email: info@wyzrds.com

CreaseStream Mini trebles speed of ‘conventional’ desk top methods Low volume desk top creasing methods are notoriously slow and usually involve someone carefully aligning card stock into position before pushing down a handle to engage a steel blade into a matrix channel. Of course, creasing results are good, this is reflected by the thousands of units that are sold to designers, copy shops and small digital printing companies every year. However, CreaseStream have come up with a unique solution that produces the same quality of crease, only three times faster. The CreaseStream Mini is best described as a desk top unit consisting of a pair of rotary shafts with soft patented creasing dies integrated, and a handle that can be manually turned to feed sheets through one after another. Up to two creases can be applied at the same time, and a choice of three crease settings can be implemented within seconds, to suit stock ranges of 100-400gsm. A special micro-perforating tool can be added as an option, this administers the type of application that allows perfed sheets to travel through laser printers without jamming the machine (the perf lies flat and doesn’t break up during offline processing.) The unit doesn’t require electrical input and can accept sheet sizes up to 52 cm in width. “It sounds simple, and it is.” says CreaseStream owner, Graham Harris. “We have seen a lot of people struggling to process products through their manual creasers, but they have had no choice but to persevere, sometimes spending all day creasing a few hundred sheets, so we sought to take advantage of the situation. The rotary action significantly quickens up production, and the specially
developed rubber creasing technology we use manipulates and stretches the fibres, even in the most sensitively printed digital stocks, so that folding is made easier, without showing signs of ugly toner cracking.“ CreaseStream has made use of a specially modified adaptation of Techni-Fold rotary creasing technology, also owned by Harris, and turned it into a unique product range that was designed to speed up the process of digital finishing. The CreaseStream Mini is the basic model before motors and sheet separating systems are incorporated to automate the famous Tri-Creaser technology. The CreaseStream Plus sits at the top of the CreaseStream range and can process up to 20,000sheets per hour. Ian Collins of Colcards, Malvern UK, recently purchased the CreaseStream Mini, and added his comments “We were searching for a manual creaser that could cope with our low volume greetings cards. We produce runs of 100 cards on a regular basis in 3-4 different sizes and needed something that was quick and easy to use that wasn’t expensive to buy. The CreaseStream Mini has more than met our needs, the quality of build and the creasing results are excellent, in fact we over work the unit to gain maximum benefit, it really is a very good solution. We recently purchased the micro-perforating tool option and are looking forward to seeing how this works for us; all in all we are extremely happy with our CreaseStream Mini.” For more information and to see a short video of the CreaseStream Mini working, please visit www.creasestream.com

New window film from Seal Graphics
D
ue to the ever increasing popularity of windows as a short term promotional medium, a new double-sided, clear polyester has been added to the range of printable films available from Seal Graphics. Called, naturally enough, Print Mount Window, the film has been developed from 23 micron polyester which is dimensionally stable and therefore unlikely to shrink as PVC window films often do. It will deliver bubble free applications on glass and clear plastics and can be fixed in place by hand quickly and easily using nothing more than a simple squeegee. One side is coated with a permanent adhesive while the other has a residue free, peelable polyacrylate emulsion. The print carrying, permanent side is protected by a siliconised release paper; while the other (window side) has an embossed 110 micron LDPE film. Seal says that Print Mount Window is suitable for removable window displays likely to remain in use for up to three months and that it will not degrade in clarity or become brittle during that lifetime. “Customers are requesting ever simpler methods of getting their advertising message across and Print Mount Window fits the bill perfectly”, said Andrew East, Seal’s Regional Sales Manager for the UK & Ireland. New UJF-3042FX UV printer, primer and inks from Mimaki F
ollowing on from the success of the award winning UJF-3042 flatbed A3 printer, Mimaki has added new functionalities to its popular UV LED curing machine. The new Mimaki UJF-3042FX features a special jettable primer that allows users to automatically prime their media if needed. Priming may be required on some surfaces for better adhesion of the UV curing inks, so this delivers the possibility to print directly with UV curable ink on many different substrates, ranging from glass to metals. As a result, the new UJF-3042FX allows for more efficient use of printing to untreated stock. While the application of primer is usually executed manually, the UJF-3042FX incorporates an automatic primer feature whereby primer is applied as part of the printing process. The new inkjet primer cartridges (available in 220 and 600ml sizes) are simply inserted into the corresponding slot of the printer. The UJF-3042FX will only use the primer where needed, saving money and time, as well as reducing waste.
Automatic primer application Materials that are unsuitable even for UV inkjet printing can be printed upon by applying a primer. This foundation layer enables better ink adhesion, making UV inkjet printing on those materials possible. The primer is simultaneously applied with the process colours during printing, thus streamlining print companies’ workflows significantly without compromising speed. Mimaki’s distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd also announces the new LF-140 ink and availability of the proven LF-200 flexible ink for the UJF-3042FX printer. With the added benefit of the new flexible ink and primer solution, this printer is unique in its market and opens up the possibility to use more substrates without manual pre-priming.
New LF-140 and LF-200 UV curable flexible inks The new LF-140 stretchable ink has an extended colour gamut compared with the current LH-100 inks that have been available since the introduction of the original model. The LF-140 inks also give excellent adhesion results with the added ink flexibility. The LF-200 ink is stretchable up to 200% in four colour mode and with the addition of a white ink layer it delivers spectacular results. With the addition of flexible inks, it is possible to use more diverse substrates, fulfilling different applications with the printer, such as printing flexible labels and on to formable media.
UV LED curing printing The Mimaki UJF-3042FX prints to substrates up to A3 in size (300 x 420 mm) and up to 50mm thickness. Using UV LED technology means that after curing, the ink is instantly bonded to the substrate and as LED does not generate high temperatures, it enables full colour printing on almost every material including heat-sensitive substrates such as resin, wood and leather.
TOSHIBA PRO MODELS Toshiba has launced eight new multifunctional colour printers, which offer professional solutions with various options: e-STUDIO2040C/2540C/3040C/3540C/4540C PRO and e-STUDIO5540C/6540C/6550C PRO. All of them provide crystal clear graphics and constant colours at convincing cost efficiency. The new e-STUDIO4540C PRO series mainly targets in-house print shops and print service providers with a midvolume, yet frequent colour usage, the even more powerful e-STUDIO6550C PRO series is perfect for larger print establishments that expect reliable colour performance for high-volume jobs. The new e-STUDIO PRO series has the
Added value with white and clear ink Mimaki’s white under and overprinting capabilities produce more vivid colours, especially on coloured or transparent substrates – adding value to printed products. Spot colour printing with clear ink, as well as layered printing and clear ink varnishes add stunning embossing results to printed products – allowing highly creative, potentially time consuming and complex jobs to be easily produced on the Mimaki UJF-3042FX. Hybrid’s Industrial Products sales manager, Mike Lewis is understandably enthusiastic about the product’s potential. “The extraordinary success of the Mimaki UJF-3042 is set to continue with the addition of these exciting features, and the potential applications for the product appear almost limitless.” Mimaki has also included a revolutionary nozzle recovery function in the latest version of the printer which enables operators to temporarily resolve any nozzle related issues prior to a technician attending the machine. This allows the printer to continue running, with little or no effect on production capacity. The Mimaki UJF-3042FX takes the pioneering features of its award winning predecessor, and further automates the production of customised output in a package that includes powerful RIP software, ink and a fully comprehensive warranty network. www.hybridservices.co.uk right model, with a perfect cost performance ratio, to meet every customer requirement. The new models feature powerful EFI Fiery controller systems with colour support according to leading industry standards, and are compliant with Mac OS X and Windows. Employment and Health & Safety
Staying compliant with Employment and Health & Safety legislation doesn’t get much simpler or costeffective than working with SME Advisor
D
o what you do best and concentrate on looking after your customers and leave the complex areas of Employment Law and Health & Safety to SME Advisor. Compliance in these important areas not only makes good sense for the security of your business but can also generate you new business too. When tendering for work with large companies and in the public sector you will have to demonstrate your compliance in these areas before your bid is considered. If you are wishing to win such work then getting it right is essential.
SME Advisor can help you and your business!
Employment Managing staff is challenging for any business but this is particularly difficult for small businesses that are unlikely to have expertise in this area. With year on year changes to employment law it becomes increasingly difficult for employers to comply with the complex legislation that governs how they must manage the relationship with their staff. Sadly, more employers are being taken to Employment Tribunal than ever before as employees become more and more aware of their employment rights and penalise any non-compliance with a tribunal claim and increasingly higher fines and compensatory awards.
Employment Law Service includes: • Contracts & Handbooks • Employment Documentation • Employment Law Updates • Telephone Advice • Tribunal & Award cover
Health & Safety Service includes: • Health & Safety Policy • Risk Assessent Documentation • Health & Safety Posters • Telephone Advice • HSE Prosecution Representation
Health & Safety There is a legal obligation for all businesses, whatever their size, to provide a safe working environment for their staff. An employer has a duty to assess the risks involved in all workplace activities and take steps to reduce these by introducing clear precise procedures providing any necessary training and ensure they are followed by carrying out regular monitoring and the keeping of records. Much as there is currently no legal requirement for a business with less than five employees to have any written policies it is still advisable to do so in order to demonstrate compliance.
Counting the cost of non-compliance The minimal cost of getting it right is nothing compared to the price that you could pay for non-compliance with possible fines, awards and legal fees, plus all your wasted time and damaged reputation too. We are very aware that all businesses are reviewing their costs and so we charge just a small monthly fee and our minimum contract period is just 12 months.

Those days are now over, thanks to the Print Skills Academy website. Through the new website companies will now be able to find all the trainingrelated information they require from a single source, helping ensure that employees develop skills relevant to the business, which in the long run will help them improve efficiency and productivity. The site brings together the best resources available, so employers no longer need to scramble around wasting valuable time looking for assistance with their skills needs. Trainees are catered for with in-depth advice on careers and job progression, while there is also a news feature where employers, and students considering a career in print, can learn about the latest developments in the industry. The Print Skills Academy website is a key part of Proskills goal of ensuring training is available that meets emerging commercial needs. Was it something I said? After ranting about the dangers of reliance on technology in last month’s issue, it was bizarre to have even my predictions overtaken by events in the past few weeks. Martin Christie writes…
T
hose of us who are content to survive with a basic mobile phone and have not yet felt the need to invest in a Blackberry may have enjoyed a moment of smugness when the entire network went down — twice. However, it is sobering to realise that we are all potential victims of these IT disasters as the consequences create shockwaves through all parts of life. When so much is dependent on the instant transmission of information — socially as well as in business — any interruption of that flow is a possible disaster on a personal or a commercial level. Tales of people whose lives had literally come to a standstill may seem initially laughable until you realise they are quite serious. On the other hand, the several million people who will be receiving a welcome rebate from the Inland Revenue as the result of another computer cock-up may well have cause to smile this Christmas. Those, however, who have an unexpected extra demand may not be quite so amused. Apart from the wider world, I am often able to source themes or at least anecdotes for this column from that wonderful and varied resource that is the customer. This month’s choice gem came as the result of what can only be described as an unfortunate finger and staple interaction. We had a complaint that staples on a particular job were so sharp that a member of staff had been injured while handling documents. Could we ensure that next time the staples weren’t quite so sharp? We are still trying to calculate how sharp a staple needs to be not to pierce skin and yet still go through a thick wedge of paper. Perhaps a health and safety warning that gloves should be used to prevent accidental damage to soft parts should be required, or perhaps staple operatives should be obliged
to wear a hi-visiblity jacket to indicate they are working in a dangerous environment. Aside from the silliness, highlight of the month was a new arrival in the large format department. We usually like to try machinery out before jumping into purchase as any investment involves not just the hardware but the longer term commitment to consumables, and issues like flexibility and reliability also come into the equation. When the nice people at Tetenal came up with their special offer on Epson’s 7890, as featured in their ad on page 2, it took me slightly less than the blink of an eye to put my hand up to see if I could have an early Christmas present. An upgrade to our dear old 7600 has been long overdue, but looking for the right replacement took some thought. Tetenal is a name probably more familiar to the photographer than the digital printer as the company has a long history in specialist products for the darkroom. I was a regular customer myself in chemical days. In more recent times they have embraced the new electronic technologies while keeping a toehold in traditional chemistry. As well as Epson they enjoy a close relationship with several major labels, including Ilford and Kodak. We have been fortunate enough to have tested several competitors machines, as well as other models from Epson, so it was a decision based on fairly good evidence and experience. The 7600 has been incredibly reliable, and is renowned for being about the most user friendly printer you could find. With its refinements in ink and head technology, on a proven chasis, there is every reason to expect the 7890 to perform likewise. To start at the basic logic a 24 inch inkjet printer — capable of A1 plus prints — is a good choice for a copy shop where floor space is often at a premium. Not only is the machine comparatively compact and easy to manoeuvre in a small area, the media is similarly manageable. Though they make 36inch paper rolls — able to do A0 portrait — nobody makes a thirty six inch printer, and the next step up to a 42 inch makes for a much larger piece of kit all round. Experience tells that the vast majority of demand for large format printing is for sizes from A3 plus up to A1 and that is where it is most profitable, utilising the wide range of specialist media now available in sheet or roll form. Beyond twenty four inches the issues of handling and storing the inevitably heavy rolls, and the matter of wastage has to be taken into account in the costings. The significance of convenient sheet feeding is an important plus in both the reduction of wastage, and flexibility in action. Although sheet paper is proportionately more expensive than the same media on roll, it does mean that small amounts of specialist surfaces — like watercolour texture for example, or some of the high quality photographic finishes — can be on the shelf and conveniently stored.
November 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
Additionally offcuts of unused portions of roll media can be saved and reused. If you are turning over a lot of prints on a daily basis on the same media, it is quite simple to nest jobs in layout and therefore use roll paper very efficiently. If not, and with print on demand in a smaller operation this is more likely, you may need to change media several times a day. This is why ease of loading of all types of paper comes high on the list of properties of an inkjet printer, and why I begin the overall review of the 7890 with this feature. The print quality of all current large format printers is hardly in question, and all the Epson’s immediate competitors are capable of extremely good results so it would be hard to judge a winner on output alone. Where the 7890 stands out, like every other Epson large format printer, is its use of a single significant factor for which the manufacture cannot entirely claim credit — gravity. By placing the media — roll or sheet — above the moving print head, rather than below it, the simple law of nature aids the passage of the paper through the machine. This is a huge advantage dealing with all media, and especially with difficult ones, and makes sheet feed a pleasure rather than an absolute trial. I know one printer with another manufacturer’s machine who only changes the paper when it runs out because it is such a performance. He tells the customer they have to take what he has got ! Not surprisingly, he is losing sales, but he does have a calmer life. The 7890 is one of Epson’s third generation of archival Ultrachrome inks — the K3 Vivid Magenta — and uses a more accurate and faster print head. It’s actually two steps up from our old 7600 so it’s quite a step in technology. Five or six years of R and D makes a huge difference these days, and nothing stands still. It is cleverly budgeted to take advantage of the new qualities, without incurring the additional costs of its posher stablemates. Although it shares the same chassis and running gear, it uses only nine of the eleven possible ink cartridge slots. The more expensive 7900 has additional orange and green inks which will enable it to produce the most accurate Pantone colour matching, but it’s a benefit to the proofing specialist that carries quite a price tag — about a thousand pounds more. The 7890 is able to reproduce a wide enough gamut of colours to please all but the most demanding of clients. It uses eight of its nine inks at a time — photo black or matte black are changed automatically or manually depending on media selected. This can be done via the print dialogue box on the computer, or on the machine. Although the 7890 has gone for the more popular control layout, the multi-option switches are easy to follow, and functions and information easily selected. A nice touch is the visual heads up of exactly how much ink is left in any individual cartridge. Paper usage can be monitored so you can always know what’s left on the roll.
v i v i d.
It’s not only the hardware that has moved forward in the intervening years, the software has taken similar steps. The colour profile presets associated with different media are extremely accurate compared to the dear old 7600 for which sometimes matching colour was a bit of a magic art. We are not pensioning the 7600 off. It has given long and loyal service and will continue to run alongside its new relation, if now its motions do seem incredibly slow. It will chug along with the bread and butter jobs, content in the knowledge that the new boy on the block may be taking the glory jobs, but is also taking the pressure off its tired joints. The great thing about the new machine is that the manufacturer hasn’t abandoned the baby with the bath water. Despite a host of improvements, small and large, it’s still unquestionably an Epson, The speed of the new machine is one of the major features. It does mean that if need be, even an A1 can be rattled off while a customer waits at the counter, rather than advising them to go and take a spot of lunch somewhere. The local pub may lose a little bit of custom but our service has improved leaps and bounds. It may be a small thing, but the new rotary cutter slices through paper and canvas like the proverbial knife through dairy produce, and the tumbling output is guided gently into a simple but effective cloth cradle where it can nest until the ink is hard enough to handle. In most cases, this is no time at all. Topside, the old spindle carriage for the roll paper has been abandoned for two individual bobbins that slot in either end. They have large handles that adjusts internal jaws to seize the inner tube firmly, and a slider that adjusts to adapt to three inch cores. This makes roll handling a lot easier and avoids either damaging the paper or putting sticky fingers on it while trying to thread it down a long spindle. There’s even a cute wrap-around band that pops round the flapping end of a roll so you don’t have to use bits of sticky tape which mark the coated surface. The new machine is a little bit bulkier than the old one because it encloses much more of its working parts in bodywork. One thing that fooled me initially was access to the ink cartridges I couldn’t find a handle or a button to push though I knew where the compartment was. It just didn’t want to open out its contents. Read the manual ! Unlike the old levers on the 7600, the 7890 has push button controls. You access the inks through the main dialogue box — press and as if by magic a catch is released with a satisfying hiss, and there they are. One note of caution that the machine supplied comes only with a basic amount of ink in all the cartridges so you will need to be prepared to get a full set fairly soon. On evidence it is proving to be fairly economical, despite regular checking and self cleaning, and certainly reasonable considering its speed and quality. All in all a pretty good deal. PRINTERS HOLD ALL THE CARDS WHEN IT COMES TO RECYCLED PAPERS
New research* from Arjowiggins Graphic manufacturer of environmental paper solutions, shows that half of paper purchasers in corporate roles do not understand the range of recycled papers available to them. The research shows that printers are in a strong position to influence purchasing decisions, with nearly one in four respondents relying on their dedicated printer for advice on which paper to buy. Companies are more frequently looking to source supplies that match the requirements of their CSR policies, with 30% of respondents believing that sourcing sustainable material is the biggest environmental challenge facing their business in the next 2-3 years. This presents a commercial opportunity for printers, who can provide clients with the most up to date information about appropriate sustainable materials for use in corporate print jobs, such as annual reports, mailers and leaflets. Printers are in an excellent position to develop a consultancy role with clients based on advice about which paper companies should be printing on, especially for marketing materials. Even people who believe that they have a very good understanding of recycled papers (25%) are likely to need guidance, for instance 30% of those respondents believe that recycled paper is of a
poorer quality than non-recycled – an outdated view of the market. Shannan Hodgson, Corporate Affairs Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic, explains: “The recession saw costs being cut across the board and in many fields this superseded commitment to procuring sustainable materials. Recently, however, we have seen customers return their focus to securing sustainable products and quality is now one of the top two most important factors when making purchasing decisions. Combating myths about recycled papers on quality will allow printers to recommend papers that meet the environmental credentials that are now so important to clients, as well as the specific requirements of the individual print job. “Technological developments have enabled us to develop recycled papers with a quality that is comparable to virgin fibre stocks. This means that companies can now choose recycled papers that have the same appearance as less sustainable virgin fibre stocks for jobs where a clean, white aesthetic is required. Papers are also available that offer a natural recycled shade that indicates a strong link to the environment. “Printers are in a very strong position commercially as they are unrivalled in their understanding of the use and suitability of
different papers. This provides them with a great opportunity to show that they understand the requirements of their clients, can add value to their business, and help them meet sustainability objectives through recommending the right recycled papers.” To further showcase the benefits of using recycled papers Arjowiggins Graphic has launched the Environmental Benefits Statement (EBS), a unique and flexible tool that allows printers to communicate the environmental savings made by using recycled papers. The EBS can be adapted to fit with a wide range of print jobs, and offers an impactful way to display the exact amounts of, CO2, waste diverted from landfill, water, energy and wood saved on your print job. For more information or for your own unique EBS, visit www.recycled-papers.co.uk There is also a video about the EBS www. youtube.com/watch?v=aPs4skxDWnk *Research was conducted on behalf of Arjowiggins Graphic by Future Thinking in December 2010 – January 2011. The sample size included 100 people responsible for paper purchasing who hold a CSR role and 100 people responsible for paper purchasing who do not have a CSR role. Research was conducted through telephone interviews and a series of focus groups.
Duraweld gains 11 places in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies List Duraweld has, for the second year running, been named in the annual edition of The SundayTimes Best Green Companies list for its environmentally friendly business practices. The company was ranked 28th out of 60 companies overall, a leap of 11 places on last year’s rank of 39th. They were also placed 5th in their category of ‘small companies with medium impact’ and were the second highest ranked manufacturing company in the whole list; all as a direct result of their pioneering range of environmentally friendly products and operating a successful 20 point Environmental Policy which consistently delivers positive results. Alastair McCall of The Sunday Times commented: “May I offer my congratulations to Duraweld on your achievement. It takes confidence and ambition to get involved in a contest like this and subject your green credentials to independent scrutiny by a national newspaper and a leading firm of environmental consultants.” The award was collected by Angie Francksen, Duraweld’s Sales Manager and Managing Director Hannah Senior at an awards event which was held at News International’s headquarters. At the event the winners were
revealed and Duraweld heard for the first time where they had been placed in the list. The results were then printed in The Sunday Times. Angie Francksen said: “It is fantastic that we have been named in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies List again. It is very rewarding to have our green initiatives and products recognised by such a prestigious organisation. We constantly strive to develop and maintain our position as a company leading the field in employing environmentally friendly business practices and offering recycled product ranges to our customers, and this is reflected in our leaping up the list to position 28.” This new accolade supports Duraweld’s ISO 14001 accreditation and carbon zero status. Based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Duraweld is one of the UK’s leading producers of customised presentation, packaging and printed stationery products. Over the last five decades, the company has constantly invested in new technology and staff development, building a reputation for first class production quality, the highest environmental standards, constant innovation and excellent customer service. The concept draws on the global roots of their flagship companies Print Fair (expert providers of print and digital messages) and Really Wild Cards (leaders in audio greetings and used significantly by WWF and RSPB). David Hyams, Co-Founder of Talking Print comments “We believe passionately in the power of audio to enhance the printed word and are delighted with the huge support we have received of the service we provide and have developed a model that enables production of small quantities or samples within a few days. Calendar update 2012 marks the start of a positive upgrade in short run calendar publication. We have hitherto struggled with binding and covers only to be delivering the finished products in a plastic carrier. Our artist friends and charity groups can sell more when the calendars look more like a gift, you know in proper packaging. Although presentation is everything the addition of a plain white card envelope makes all calendars look more expensive, before you have even seen the printing. I don’t know why exactly but maybe it is just expectations of what a bought and paid for gift should look and feel like. We are pleased to introduce you to a new supplier as recommended by our friends at Printaply. For all you card envelope requirements contact www.boardenvelopes.com, call 01636 700611

The Copier Sales Manager Funeral A salesman was leaving a copy shop with his morning bunch of compliment slips when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary salesman, he had once worked with, walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 other well known copier salesmen walking single file. The man couldn’t stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the salesman walking the dog and said: “I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?” “My sales manager’s” he replied. ‘’What happened to him?” “He yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed him.” He inquired further, “But who is in the second hearse?” The man answered, “The leasing credit controller. He was trying to help my sales manager when the dog turned on him.” A very poignant and touching moment of brotherhood and silence passed between the two salesmen… “Can I borrow the dog?” The man replied, “Get in line.”
Arms Race The Americans and Russians at the height of the arms race realised that if they continued in the usual manner they were going to blow up the whole world. One day they sat down and decided to settle the whole dispute with one dog fight. They would have five years to breed the best fighting dog in the world and which ever side’s dog won would be entitled to world domination. The Russians found the biggest meanest Doberman and Rottweiler female dogs in the world and bred them with the biggest meanest Siberian wolves. They selected only the biggest and strongest puppy from each litter, removed his siblings which gave him all the milk. After five years came up with the biggest meanest dog the world had ever seen. Its cage needed steel bars that were five inches thick and nobody could get near it. When the day came for the dog fight, the Americans showed up with a strange animal. It was nine foot long Dachshund. Everyone felt sorry for the Americans because they knew
there was no way that this dog could possibly last ten seconds with the Russian dog. When the cages were opened up, the Dachshund came out of its cage and slowly waddled over towards the Russian Dog. The Russian dog snarled and leaped out of its cage and charged the American Dachshund. When it got close enough to bite the Dachshunds neck, the Dachshund opened its mouth and consumed the Russian Dog in one bite. There was nothing left at all of the Russian Dog. The Russians came up to the Americans shaking their heads in disbelief. ‘We don’t understand how this could have happened. We had our best people working for five years with the meanest Doberman and Rottweiler female dogs in the world and the biggest meanest Siberian Wolves.’ ‘That’s nothing,’ an American replied. ‘We had our best plastic surgeons working for five years to make an alligator look like a Dachshund.’
Feeling your age? ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... Your wife says, ‘Let’s go upstairs and make love,’ and you answer, ‘Honey, I can’t do both!’ ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you’re barefoot. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... You don’t care where your wife goes, just as long as you don’t have to go along. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... ‘Getting a little action’ means you don’t need to take any fibre today. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... ‘Getting lucky’ means you find your car in the car park. ‘OLD’ IS WHEN... An ‘all nighter’ means not getting up to pee.
Quick Sales spiel A salesman in his 40’s bought a new BMW and was out driving on the motorway at top speed when he suddenly saw flashing blue lights behind him. ‘There’s no way they can catch a BMW,’ he thought to himself and sped up even more. Then the reality of the situation hit him, ‘What the heck am I doing?’ he thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license without a word, and examined it and the car. ‘It’s been a long day, it is the end of my shift,
and it’s Friday the 13th. I don’t feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.’ The sales guy thinks for a second and says, ‘Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back.’ ‘Have a nice weekend,’ said the officer.
Job Application I would like to be considered for the advertised position within your company. I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Kenyan refugees, I write award-winning operas, and manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I woo women with my sensuous trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru. Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once singlehandedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I had trials with Manchester United, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I’m bored, I build large suspension bridges in my garden. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge. I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I dont perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have appeared on Through the Keyhole and won the gold plaque. Last summer I toured Eastern Europe with a traveling centrifugalforce demonstration. I run the 100m in 9.65 sees. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me. I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small
bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me. I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. I have made extraordinary four course meals using only some vegetables and a Breville toaster. I breed prize winning clams. I have won bullfights in Madrid, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and chess competitions at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis. But I have not yet been a copier salesman.

Credit control A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totaling a great deal of money. The distributor noticed that the previous bill hadn’t been paid, so he asked his collections manager to leave a voice-mail for them saying, “We can’t ship your new order until you pay for the last one.” The next day the collections manager received a return phone call, “Please cancel the order. We can’t wait that long.”
Lunch break Our first Blonde GUY joke ... and well worth the wait! An Irishman, a Mexican and a blonde guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, ‘Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch I’m going to jump off this building.’ The Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, ‘Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I’m going to jump off, too.’ The blonde opened his lunch and said, ‘Cheese again. If I get a cheese sandwich one more time I’m jumping too.’
November 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | READER’S SCRIBES | 31
The next day the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage and jumped to his death. The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito and jumped too. The blonde opened his lunch, saw the cheese and jumped to his death as well. At the funeral the Irishman’s wife was weeping. She said, ‘If I’d known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage I never would have given it to him again!’ The Mexican’s wife also wept and said, ‘I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn’t realise he hated burritos so much.’ Everyone turned and stared at the blonde’s wife... ‘Hey, don’t look at me,’ she said, ‘He makes his own lunch.’
Accident Report I am writing in response to your request for ‘additional information.’ In block number 30 of the accident report form, I put ‘poor planning’ as the cause for my accident. You said in your last letter that I should explain more fully. I trust that the following detail will be sufficient. I am an amateur radio operator. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the top section of my new 80-foot antenna tower. When I completed my work, I discovered that I had, over the course of several trips up the tower, brought about 300 lbs. of tools and spare hardware. Rather than carry the now unneeded tools and materials down by hand, I decided to lower the items in a small barrel by using a pulley, which fortunately was attached to the pole at the tip of the tower. Securing the rope at ground level, I went up to the top of the tower and loaded the tools and materials into the barrel. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tightly to insure a slow descent of the 300 lbs. of tools.
A man walks into the psychiatrist’s office with a courgette up his nose,
You will note in block number 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 155 lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming down. This explains my fractured skull and broken clavicle. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly on the rope in spite of the pain. At about the same time however, the barrel hit the ground. The bottom fell out of the barrel. Devoid of the weight of the tools, the barrel now weighed 20 pounds. I refer you again to my weight in block number 11. As you might guess, I began a rapid descent down the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles and the lacerations or my legs and lower body. The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of tools, and fortunately only three vertebras were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, that as I lay there on the tools in pain, unable to stand, and watching the empty barrel 80 feet above me, I again lost my presence of mind. I let go of the rope!

Good Manners Anytime you see salesman open a car door for his girlfriend, either the car is new or the girlfriend is.
HER SIDE OF THE STORY He was in an odd mood when I got to the pub, I thought it might have been because I was a bit late but he didn’t say anything much about it. The conversation was quite slow going so I thought we should go off somewhere more intimate so we could talk more privately. We went to this restaurant and he was STILL acting a bit funny. I tried to cheer him up and started to wonder whether it was me or something else. I asked him, and he said no. But I wasn’t really sure. So anyway, in the cab on the way back to his house, I said that I loved him and he just put his arm around me. I didn’t know what the hell that meant because you know he doesn’t say it back or anything. We finally got back to his place and I was wondering if he was going to dump me! So I tried to ask him about it but he just switched on the TV. Reluctantly, I said I was going to go to sleep. Then after about 10 minutes, he joined me and we made love. But, he still seemed really distracted, so afterwards I just wanted to leave but I just cried myself to sleep. I dunno, I just don’t know what he thinks anymore. I mean, do you think he’s met someone else?
HIS SIDE OF THE STORY Seagulls lost. Tired. Bit Pissed. Got a shag though!
The psychiatrist replies, “You are not eating properly.”
