Digital Print UK exhibition at the NEC favershaM House Group, organisers of the highly successful Sign & Digital UK annual exhibition covering the sign making and wide format digital printing market, has announced the launch of a new national annual digital printing exhibition for the commercial print sector, Digital Print UK, which will be held on the 18th, 19th and 20th September 2012 at the NEC, Birmingham. Digital Print UK will focus on the growing use of digital technology in the printing industry and will be the national showcase for the wide range of digital printing equipment and services available to the commercial printing market. Rudi Blackett, Event Director, explains “Digital Print UK will use the formula that enabled Sign & Digital UK to establish its position as the market leader and the essential meeting place for the sign making and wide format industry. As organisers of S&D, we have become increasingly aware that there is an opportunity to replicate that exhibition in the commercial print sector and deliver an annual show that serves the UK market with a focused and fresh approach. We are looking

forward to bringing our passion and creativity for organising exhibitions to this vibrant sector. Digital Print UK will be a must attend event for all those already providing and using digital print, as well as those looking to now bring this technology in-house. From concept and design, through to output and finishing, the exhibition will focus on showcasing the latest technologies, equipment and processes for all those working in the print market including, commercial printers, ‘within business’ print departments in markets such as local government, education, finance, and leisure; copy shops / instant print bureaus, digital print bureaus, litho printers, label and packaging printing companies and finishing, mailing and fulfilment specialists…as well as designers, brand specialists, print buyers and end-users. First and foremost Digital Print UK will be not just an exhibition, but a business opportunity for

both exhibitors and visitors. Business advice and education will be at the forefront coupled with the opportunity to understand how your business can develop using the latest digital print technology and equipment. The main focus will be on showing application based solutions, reviewing suppliers, and seeing equipment being demonstrated allowing visitors to be able to make informed buying decisions.” The show is being held at the prime early autumn time in the buying cycle and will be a fantastic opportunity to see all the latest products including those recently released abroad. Digital Print UK’s marketing and promotional plan will be highly targeted and wide reaching and the show team will work closely with exhibitors, press, service providers and visitors to plan to make the event a business opportunity for everyone. The show will also be a fantastic opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers to actively demonstrate the benefits of their latest products and services to a highly targeted audience. www.digitalprintuk.net

A Great Way To Do Business! sIgn & dIgItal UK trade Only, the marketing and information solutions provider for the Promotional Product Industry has announced record attendances for APG expo 2011. The shows – the biggest autumn events in the promotional products calendar attracted more than 500 visitors. The number of exhibiting suppliers – 98 was also a record for the autumn events. The events, at Manchester United Football Club and Sandown Park Exhibition Centre, were timed to coincide with the start of the crucial second selling season, the run in to Christmas and New Year. Nigel Bailey, Event Director for Trade Only, said: “Time and again, APG delivers what people want at this time of the year – face to face contact between exhibitors and distributors. We had a number of first time exhibitors this year who were amazed at how effective the shows were. Visitor quality was also very good with many leading distributors in attendance. It’s a great way to do business. PF Concept for instance had four staff on their stand who were kept busy from start to finish on both days. Every single product they brought with them to show was brand new! We are delighted with the shows and the feedback we have been getting from visitors and exhibitors alike have been very positive.” Gail Kilcoyne, Exhibition Manager for Trade Only, added: “The shows were very busy, exceeding our expectations with lots of visitors arriving early to make the most of the day. Some exhibitors were swamped and ran out of samples and brochures and we were ferrying drinks and food to them as they were unable to leave their stands. We will be running the shows again next year, many exhibitors rebooking on the day” Trade Only used APG expo as the global launch platform for their ground breaking Vision Software. Liz Allen marketing manager for Trade Only said “The interest we have received in Trade Only Vision has been incredible with distributors eager to sign up for what we believe is a world beating product” www.tradeonly.co.uk

Toyota World Newport makes a bold mooove as part of a new marketing campaign, Toyota World in Newport recently commissioned a vehicle wrapped to resemble a cow… The brand new Toyota Aygo was wrapped by Cardiff based sign specialists, Morgan Signs, using a 10 year conformable super cast vinyl. The already white vehicle was covered in black vinyl spots, cut using their Mimaki CG-FX cutting plotter and given an animated face and tail. The interior was also designed to complement the wrap, with black and white leather seats and matching embroidery of the cow’s face on each of the headrests. The Aygo, which has become affectionately known as “Moo”, has been put on display to attract attention and potential buyers. Amanda BinnerVaughn, Dealer Principal at Toyota World who initiated the idea, plans to have the Moo on display for several months before putting it on the market. Morgan Signs’ sales and marketing manager, Michael Kitchin says of the job. “We believe that the Moo will be an effective marketing tool which will receive enough attention to support the idea. Amanda plans to create a pig next, potentially followed by an entire farmyard.” The Mimaki CG-FX makes up just part of Morgan Signs’ suite of sign making technology, with a matching 1.6m outdoor durable Mimaki JV33 inkjet printer available for their digital work along with a Mimaki CG-60SR desktop cutting plotter that produces smaller format self adhesive vinyl. Complimenting Morgan Signs on the originality of this particular job, John de la Roche; national sales manager for Mimaki’s exclusive UK distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd remarked, “It’s great to see cut vinyl still being used so creatively. Whilst Morgan Signs has cutting edge digital capabilities available to them with their Mimaki JV33 printer, their choice of process for the Cow Wrap works superbly.” Further information on Morgan Signs can be found by visiting www.morgan-signs.com or calling 02920 672828. Full details of the complete Mimaki product range can be found at www. hybridservices.co.uk or by calling Hybrid on 01270 501900.

Phoebe’s progress recognised with awards nomination the 2011 Proskills Awards will be held at Alton Towers on 3 November, both celebrating the achievements of people working in the process and manufacturing sector and also highlighting its wider commercial importance. Proskills has received hundreds of entries from a wide range of employers, learners, apprentices and training providers, demonstrating all that is best about the process and manufacturing sector. The entries have revealed the commitment and skill of people working in the process and manufacturing sector, qualities exemplified by Phoebe Stockdale, who has been nominated for Apprentice of the Year. Phoebe started an apprenticeship at Business Design and Print network Kall Kwik in Crawley in 2008, and has since risen through the ranks to become Assistant Manager. “Phoebe handles day to day production workloads and client requests, pre-press creative work and then produces digital work on the relevant pieces of hardware. She manages client expectations directly and with aplomb. Clients have commented that they prefer dealing with Phoebe as she is knowledgeable, easy to deal with, efficient and delivers on promises,” says Barry Cool, a Director at the company. This is allied to a sound understanding of print and design processes.

Phoebe has learnt a great deal about the pre-press and creative section of Kall Kwik over the course of her apprenticeship, and her technical knowledge has brought real benefits to the business. “She has been instrumental in maximising the hardware’s capabilities within the branch and because of her attention to detail, she minimises costs and maximises profits,” says Barry. By taking an apprenticeship Phoebe has gained industry relevant skills and avoided the burden of student debt. Now her development has gained further recognition with promotion into the creative studio team. “To be promoted to join an experienced creative team at such a young age and without a degree in graphics is truly an achievement in itself,” stresses Barry. With comedian Terry Alderton presenting the prizes at the Proskills awards ceremony the event promises to be a hugely enjoyable evening that will highlight the work of both individuals and companies in the process and manufacturing sector, while also offering important networking and sponsorship opportunities. If you would like to get involved in the Proskills Awards then please get in touch on 01235 833844 or via manon.chaput@proskills.co.uk

Innovative investments roland forUM

Damien Halliwell, B2B with Steve Johnston, M.D. Paper Innovation

Preston-based specialist print firm, Paper Innovation have invested in a Xerox 1000 digital press, with advanced on-line spot varnish capabilities. This purchase brings the year’s investments to over £600,000, with the company acquiring wirobinding, perfect-binding, lamination, die-cutting and case-making machinery. Managing Director, Steve Johnston said, “This equipment gives us tremendous capabilities in terms of product range, print and finish quality and turnaround times, as well as cost, due the fact that we complete every process in-house.” He added, “We are delighted to have worked with first rate companies, such as Kolbus, Xerox, Renz, Duplo B2B and IFS.”

OLyMPIC PRESS FOR DIGITAL EXPANSION

olyMPIC Press in Altrincham have just purchased a Duplo DC-445 creaser to improve the quality of their digitally printed output. Olympic Press has been in business for 20 years and has built up a solid client base largely through recommendations and organic growth which Director Jim Gray puts down to “good quality at a fair price”. The firm diversified into digital print in 2009 to be able to satisfy a shift in demand to more frequent but smaller quantity orders and now runs a digital press alongside their four Heidelberg machines. Over the years Olympic Press has brought all their finishing in-house to stay competitive; Gray explained, “Outsourcing finishing is not a viable option for us these days. The high transport costs and minimum charges make it too expensive – especially as run lengths have been coming down.” After the digital press was installed, it quickly became apparent that the raw print was incompatible with most of their existing finishing kit. Folding was a major issue because the print was cracking so they bought a hand creaser to overcome the problem. The volumes coming off the digital press continued to creep up and it quickly came to a point where they were spending far too much time creasing by hand. Jim Gray realised they needed a more automated solution and they began searching the market for creasing machines. Local finishing equipment specialist, The Finishing Point in Warrington recommended the Duplo DC-445 but Jim was sceptical because the stated top speed was slower than a leading competitor. The company decided to trial the machines side by side and settled on the Duplo because of the performance of its top feeding technology. Gray said, “The guys in the factory found it to be the most productive because the feeding was more consistent and less prone to misfeeds. We also noticed it didn’t mark the print which was a major advantage”. Since installing the machine, Olympic Press have been using the machine every day and particularly like the versatility as it can perforate and crease at the same time. They’ve even been putting certain litho jobs on it which was not something they had anticipated. As Jim Gray summarised, “It’s a great piece of kit, you can just load it up, start it running and then walk away and do something else”. The DC-445 Ducreaser is an auto-feeding creasing machine with optional slitting and perforating units. It is designed to cope with short runs with fast set up and multiple creasing – up to 15 per sheet in 0.1mm increments. www.duplouk.co.uk

International Paper shortlisted for Prestigious PPI award InternatIonal Paper has announced that the company has been short listed for the ‘Promotional Campaign of the Year’ in the 3rd annual 2011 Pulp & Paper International (PPI) Awards. The PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognising this type of achievements in the sector. International Paper has been nominated for its ‘Little Book’ campaign which is part of a straight talking initiative developed by International Paper in its communications to try to tell ‘The Sustainability Story’ of the pulp and paper industry more effectively and make it easier for people and especially the younger generation to understand some of the key facts about how sustainable the industry really is. ‘The Little Green Book’ dispels the common myths and misconceptions about paper while ‘The Little Book of Commonsense’ reminds every one why paper is as good, as relevant and as right today as ever. To view or order the booklets, visit the ‘Sustainability’ section at www. internationalpaper.com/EMEA. Mark Rushton, Editor of PPI magazine and chairman of the jury for the PPI Awards 2011, commented: “The PPI Awards are now in their third year and the quality and quantity of the entries is better than ever. I look forward to seeing the finalists in Brussels in November.” David Higgins, Director of Communications and Government Relations for International Paper EMEA said: “These awards are regarded as a universal benchmark of quality within the paper and pulp industry. Xerox announces world’s first high-speed waterless inkjet

the Xerox CiPress 500 Production Inkjet System, the world’s only high-speed waterless inkjet device, is making its North American debut at Graph Expo 2011. The supercharged system has earned high praise from a test customer, who calls it a “revolutionary, industry changing solution.” Printing 500 feet or 2,050 full colour A4 pages per minute, the twin engine device from Xerox efficiently creates personalised marketing, transpromo and publishing pieces. The inkjet system was tested by dmh Marketing Partners, a U.S. direct mail company that creates more than 800 million pieces annually. By using the Xerox CiPress 500, dmh achieved consistent quality from page to page, spending less time on recalibrating the printing press and more time maximising profitable revenue opportunities. “We are constantly looking for cutting edge technology to drive the manufacturing process and we believe the CiPress 500 is the best technology for high volume production,” said Randy Seberg, chief technology officer, dmh

Marketing Partners. Building from its patented solid ink technology, the Xerox CiPress 500 enables printing on low cost, plain paper without ink soaking through. This – together with self monitoring and auto-correcting production controls – results in a workhorse device reliable enough to print tens of millions of pages every month. Xerox’s FreeFlow Print Server enhances productivity by handling complex variable jobs without sacrificing print speed. “The predictability and consistency is very high – the first sheet looks the same as sheet 500,000, which I could never say of an offset press,” added Seberg. Printers can be even more productive and efficient with Xerox’s IntegratedPlus – a new programme that takes advantage of the open standards platform of Xerox FreeFlow Print Server and various industry leading partner software solutions. The first such offering – Xerox GMC IntegratedPlus – uses custom-designed software

MIMAKI INTRODUCE NEXT GENERATION AT ITMA 2011 MIMaKI Engineering participated at ITMA, the International Exhibition of Textile Machinery, held last month in Barcelona. Mimaki showcased its leading range of textile printers, the highly productive Tx400-1800D and Tx400-1800B. Visitors to ITMA also got an early preview of new textile and apparel solutions from Mimaki, which included new textile pigment inks specially designed for the Tx-400 Series printers, a new textile RIP (Raster Image Processing software), as well as two new textile printers prototypes (concepts) based on Mimaki’s digital inkjet heritage. Two new Mimaki products were exhibited in combination with Mimaki’s

for the Xerox FreeFlow Print Server and CiPress 500, which delivers an extra boost of productivity. The results: consistent quality, two-way data communication, reduced labour costs and fewer opportunities for errors in a print run – all of which drive volume and revenue growth. “As the demand for colour pages continues to grow, inkjet devices such as the Xerox CiPress 500 become a strategic installation – positioning printers to capture more profitable jobs and produce them in the most productive, economical way,” said Eric Armour, president, Graphic Communications Business Group, Xerox Corporation. At Graph Expo, Xerox will preview the single engine duplex configuration of the CiPress 500. Built in response to customers seeking a lower entry point, the system features the same benefits of the twin engine duplex and can be upgraded. Konica Minolta’s revolutionary High Chroma toner bizhub Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd has launched the bizhub PRESS C70hc, the company’s latest high speed digital colour system to use Konica Minolta’s revolutionary High Chroma toner, designed to simulate the colour palate of an RGB monitor using CMYK print process. The High Chroma output offered by the bizhub PRO C70hc will greatly benefit graphic arts companies, commercial printers as well creative professionals that want to replicate the RGB colour palate in printed materials. Such areas to benefits from this world leading technology for example, would be in the production of photobooks. “The photobook market for Western Europe in 2010 was estimated at 17.3 million units worth €512 million, and the UK market at 1.3 million units, demonstrating the huge potential growth in the photobook market sector for the commercial print sector. Our bizhub PRESS C70hc is well positioned to meet the demands of this market for both the commercial print and photographic sectors”, states Jonathan Wilson, Market Development Manager for Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). Tonal range and media capabilities position the bizhub PRESS C70hc as the output device of choice for the graphic arts market. When combining the bizhub PRESS C70hc with Konica Minolta’s SaaS (Software as a Service) enabled photobook solution, the company can offer commercial printers and the digital print for pay market a solution that minimises capital expenditure but maximises revenue generation from the first sheet out. Combining cutting edge software and game changing hardware, Konica Minolta’s solution is the evolution the professional print market has been waiting for.

A key aspect of the bizhub PRESS C70hc feature set is its RGB workflow flexibility, providing seamless integration with colour setup and colour conversion. With its unique High Chroma toner technology and its capabilities in reproducing the RGB range, Konica Minolta has shown a clear understanding of what copy shops, commercial printers and in-plant operations need for printing variable data items, marketing collateral, computer graphics, brochures, business cards, labels or POS material. High Chroma toner’s most important feature is its ability to reproduce more of the standard RGB range than was previously possible. The new bizhub PRESS C70hc closely replicates colours displayed, for example on a calibrated monitor. The

HC toner is derived from Konica Minolta’s world leading Simitri HD toner technology and features much higher colour saturation than is possible with the conventional CMYK process. Jonathan Wilson continues, “Our new High Chroma technology can produce high impact quality colour work, for example point of sale materials, in short runs on demand. For the graphics design market this means that what you see on your screen is what you get in print. Complicated conversion processes from standard RGB into CMYK are a thing of the past. The new bizhub PRESS C70hc combines outstanding colour output with impressive media flexibility and comprehensive inline finishing options.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

KIP launches 700RC dual feed low cost MFP KIP has announced the UK launch of the KIP 700RC multi-function print system, an ultracompact, exceptionally low cost and versatile solution targeted squarely at ‘point of need’ applications such as design offices. Equipped with both roll and cassette feeds, the 700RC prints directly to all ‘A’ sizes, removing the need to change rolls – reducing print time and wastage. Based on KIP’s world leading 100% toner efficient HDP mono print engine technology, the 700RC also features a high grade built in colour scanner with the ability to print and copy directly to colour inkjets, delivering significant productivity and cost savings over all in one inkjet based mono/colour solutions. In keeping with KIP’s ‘family’ approach to product standardisation, the KIP 700RC shares the same award winning touchscreen user interface and software platform as the entire range of KIP systems, plus key-code

upgrades to scan to file and direct copy to inkjet, providing a very low cost entry point for basic print and copy applications while providing a versatile and cost effective route to more sophisticated facilities as required. Grainger Hill of KIP UK comments: “The KIP 700RC is a truly significant breakthrough for the entry level print market. Monitoring and controlling costs has never mattered so much and our systems offer major advantages in this regard. KIP’s modular keycode upgrade path drops the cost of entry to an even lower level: for analogue users there has never been a better time to go digital; for existing digital users, KIP systems offer cost savings and productivity benefits unmatched by anything else in the market.” To find out more about the KIP 700RC and other KIP print solutions email: info@kipuk.com, telephone: 01327 304601 or visit: www.kipuk.com

Convert quark XPress to Adobe InDesign with new q2ID v5.5 MarKZware, the leading developer of file conversion technology for Adobe InDesign has announced an upgrade to its popular Adobe Plugin, Q2ID (Quark to InDesign). This latest version of the Adobe plugin runs under InDesign CS5.5 to convert Quark up through QuarkXPress 9 files. Q2ID is also available with Quark 9 support for InDesign CS4 and InDesign CS5.5 and is available on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Markzware Q2ID InDesign plugin converts Quark documents and instantly re-creates them to an InDesign CS4, CS5 and now CS5.5. It is often a daunting task to manually convert Quark files. Today, Q2ID v5.5 provides a quick, easy and affordable method to convert content from Quark to InDesign. This Quark conversion is as easy as opening up any Quark document into a new InDesign document. Q2ID is very accurate, providing special attention to the intricate details of the Quark content

when converting Quark to InDesign. Shelley White of Running With Scissors Graphic Design explains how she benefited from this Adobe plugin for Quark to InDesign, “I have been working in Adobe InDesign for a couple of years, so when faced with revising two catalogues created in QuarkXPress, I knew I had to find a way to painlessly convert them to InDesign. After a bit of research, I found the Markzware Q2ID software. Reviews were solid and the price was reasonable, so I purchased the software and took it to task. I was thrilled and amazed at the results. Sure, there were a few little oddball remnants left after the translation, but there was very, very little clean up work involved. It would have taken me untold hours of my own manual work to do what Q2ID did in a flash! This could be the best thing since sliced bread, at least in the form of conversion utilities.” www.markzware.com/products/q2id/q2id-store/

New technology from Canon and Océ Canon Europe and Océ have announced the next milestone in the journey of Canon and Océ with the launch of two co-developed production printing systems: The Océ VarioPrint DP Line, a series of compelling black and white systems based on breakthrough technology and the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000S PRO, a next generation, light production colour printer. The Océ VarioPrint 95-105-120-135 are powerful, light to mid production printers, combining Océ printing technology, engine and controller with integrated Canon scanning and finishing solutions. It offers excellent image consistency, instant productivity and multiple finishing options in one highly configurable system. There are four engine speeds available in the DP line: 95, 105, 120 and 135 A4 images per minute. At its core is the innovative, Océ DirectPress technology, which does not use light, high temperatures or electrical charges to create an image, making it a reliable alternative to traditional technologies for the black and white market. Océ DirectPress technology replaces the multiple process steps used in traditional printing technologies with a single, digital, no variable process. The result is a highly stable and consistent quality output without streaks, striping or banding across jobs. The new engine incorporates a diverse range of scanning and finishing capabilities drawn from the successful Canon imagePRESS range enabling customers to demand the highest quality in a wide range of profitable print applications. Precise finishing can be easily achieved due to no toner cracking when folding or creasing and less media distortion as a result of the low fusing temperature.

The Océ VarioPrint DP line also helps customers reduce their environmental impact. HeatXchange technology implemented in the printer saves energy by transferring the heat used to fuse toner onto paper from printed sheets to new sheets entering the print path. By recycling the heat in this way, customers can reduce their energy consumption by at least 30% compared to other systems in its class. The VarioPrint DP Line has the lowest TEC (Typical Energy Consumption) value in the mid production market and can be plugged into a standard power outlet. Océ DirectPress technology also produces no ozone emissions making for a cleaner working environment for system users. Despite its low energy use, productivity is high, because of EnergyLogic. This technology matches the power requirements of a print job with the available power in the system. It ensures that the system starts printing quickly after a cold start or maintains maximum speed after changing to heavier media. The incorporation of an Océ PRISMAsync controller gives customers immediate productivity and easier management of complex jobs. Expanding the joint portfolio further and building on the success of the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000 PRO series, the new C9000S PRO integrates Canon colour technology with Océ PRISMAsync controller. Customers can benefit from a solution that offers intuitive operation, ease of use and multiple media and finishing options on one highly efficient and versatile platform. The new Océ VarioPrint DP Line is available immediately in the UK and Ireland. Availability of the new Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000S PRO series in the UK and Ireland will be announced in Q4 2011. www.canon.co.uk / www.oce.com.

Dynafold’s European launch of ‘Tabbler’ tabbler is a new print finishing machine which places a strip of tape on the open edge of folded self mailers, filling the gap between using expensive automated tabbing machines and manually affixing tabs. Tabbler is designed to fit on a printers worktop, it is about the size of an electric stapler, and it operates like a hand-fed electric stapler, applying a piece of tape on the open edge of a folded self mailer. No set-up or training is required to use Tabbler effectively. Tabbler’s unique design allows for automated tape loading with Tabbler Tape. Tabbler Tape replaces wafer seals with a speciality tape, allowing the self mailer to be opened without tearing the paper. Also, Tabbler uses tape instead of wafer seals that require a paper backing, saving money and reducing waste Tabbler is the ideal solution for small volume businesses that hand tab mailers and brochures. Expensive automated tabbers exist to seal high volume runs, however, most runs of less than 500 self mailers are tabbed manually, which is a slow and costly process. Tabbler is the first affordable and easy to use semi-automated solution for tabbing small to medium volume self mailers. PrintMediaPartners, email: sales@printmediapartners.com

CHRISTMAS WITH THAT MAGIC TOUCH

It’s that time again, and I believe some people have started or even finished their Christmas shopping. And then does anybody actually enjoy wrapping the presents? Luckily for us, and with a little bit of help from our friends at The MagicTouch it is possible to personalise gift boxes, so when the queue at your counter waiting for their Christmas cards to be printed ( and at the same time complaining that they all that wrapping to do), why not suggest you make them some gift boxes. Using your existing heat press, soft pad and the CPM 6.2 or 6.4 transfer papers, images, photos or logos can be printed in full colour onto the flat silver surface of the boxes. Once decorated the box can be easily formed and fixed using double sided adhesive tape. The products when printed can remain flat to enable them to be posted economically and reduce any potential damage in transit to the end user who can then add the desired contents. All three versions are perfect for the traditional corporate gift sectors, the bottle box in particular enables the customer to brand and personalise to maximum effect. The recipient may drink the contents, but they will always keep the box. Both the small and medium size have a multitude of applications including wedding cake, jigsaws, lingerie, t-shirts, jewellery, soaps, cosmetics, sweets and chocolate or that secret special something! The bottle version accommodates wine, spirits and champagne for all year round occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, awards or recognition etc. www.themagictouch.co.uk

Christmas Cards from Kingsmead UK print house Kingsmead has once again launched its range of Christmas card blanks for printers and copy shops. Last year we gained many orders from the excellent samples available, either printing direct onto the inside of the cards, or the more popular choice of a paper insert attached inside. All very Chrismassy and highly lucrative. To print from your customers own designs is one side of this seasonal bananza, but many prospective punters do not have their own artwork or even time to give your designer a brief. They simply want something aproppiate and have some multi signed wishes personalising this years choice of card. Hey they are the customers so get stock in. www.kingsmeadpublications.com

EASy DOME MAKES DOMING EASy

doMIng isn’t new but Easy Dome, from Xpres, is certainly a new angle on the process. Easy Dome is a simple 4 stage process that generates a high quality finish every time. Here’s how it works 1. Print the image or photo onto Xpres selfadhesive doming vinyl 2. Position the vinyl in the Xpres cutter and cut out the contour of the image and weed away the excess vinyl 3. Place the transfers on level glass trays and apply the dome solution over each image and leave to air dry 4. Position the now domed image onto the product. Not only is it easy but unit production costs are kept nice and low. As an example look at personalising a memory stick. The total cost of the stick including the doming will be about £4.15 (£4 for the stick and £0.15 for the doming) so with an average selling price of about £15 this will bring you a profit of nearly £11. Not bad for a few minutes work! The process will work just as well on a wide variety of products and surfaces such as trophies and corporate gifts but Xpres have taken doming to the next level by applying it to textiles. Unlike solid surfaces garments are subjected to regular laundering and doming, as a surface applied decoration, could suffer but Xpres have gone through all of the relevant testing procedures with outstanding results. Easy Dome is also special as it is the last piece in the Xpres 5 in 1 solution jigsaw. Using the Xpres Cut Plus package consisting of the Roland GX24, an inkjet printer, and a heat press together with the correct consumables you can quickly generate single, multi, and full colour textile transfers, Gem Tec Rhinestone decoration, signage and, now, doming – 5 processes from the same system. One of the key attractions with 5 in 1 is the low capital outlay where you only need to make a relatively small investment of around £2,500 to be up and running. If however you already have the key elements already then the outlay is even lower with the add-on Easy Dome starter kit coming in at only £140. Whether you are looking at investment, profit or flexibility Easy Dome wins on every count. The product is easy to use and allows you to expand your business into other areas whilst still relating it to your current customer base. For a low entry cost you can add this service and be up and running in no time. Easy to use, easy on the pocket and easy to incorporate into your business, Easy Dome is a must see product. For more information call Xpres on 01332 85 50 85 or e-mail them at sales@xpres.co.uk. You can also visit the web site at www.xpres.co.uk

Sign & Digital UK wins CSN SOTM

The winner of the October 2011 CSN coveted Site of the Month award is Faversham House Group, organisers of Sign & Digital UK show for introducing a brand new website for visitors and exhibitors.

C

elebratIng Its 25th year serving the sign making industry, the show has grown and expanded with the evolving printing industry to encompass wide format digital printing, imaging and finishing and continues to be the only show of its kind in the UK. The website boasts a wealth of new features including scrolling imagery on the home page with direct links through to the latest show news and features. There are also useful ‘information panels’ designed to facilitate the site visitors’ access to the most up to date information, where site users will be able to find information ‘at a glance’, including a press and PR section, 2011 show highlights and the 2012 Awards & Networking event. ‘Quick link’ panels, clearly defined for visitor and exhibitors, allow users to navigate quickly to relevant information. There will be advertising opportunities on the website for exhibitors to increase their profile and there is a stronger focus on social media to reach all audiences and to help connect industry and businesses better. With the new website featuring social media links quite prominently the organisers are encouraging all signmakers and print service providers to follow them on Twitter (@signanddigitaluk), LinkedIn (Sign & Digital) and Facebook (Sign & Digital UK 2012) as followers will be able to get the inside scoop on what’s happening at the show – and even during the show! Alan Caddick, marketing manager for the show explains; “Last year some exhibitors really took social media by the horns and were offering special show offers via twitter on the day and within the hour… so if you’re following us, that’s the best way of ensuring you get the most up to date information about what’s happening, as its happening.” www.signanddigitaluk.com

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | COPY SHOP NEWS | October 2011

I can’t believe it! Martin Christie puts on his most comfortable Victor Meldrew slippers and comes to the inevitable conclusion on digital technology.

U

nfortunately I can believe it! Going into another winter, it’s hardly comforting to be told things are going to get tougher economically, and for some years to come, especially when those delivering the message appear to have little experience or understanding of running anything more complicated than a debating society. I am scratching my head to recall the boom time that is supposed to proceed the bust, or maybe I just slept through it. For those of us at the sharp end of delivering goods and services, the last decade, dominated by the challenge of developing technology, has been consistently tough. Not so apparently for some who seem to be immune to this reality. How else can catastrophic miscalculations be made on major decisions at a national level – computer systems that don’t work, even when hundreds of millions have been thrown pointlessly after them; communication systems that don’t communicate; information systems hopelessly inadequate for the task. And all of this shambles advised by consultants who are alleged to be experts in their field, and paid handsomely for their incompetence. Worse still, there is no penalty for this failure, the very same people are retained and presumably continue to advise on future projects. It seems we have become so numbed to the catalogue of scandals that we accept things grudgingly at a national level that would be a major issue in the shop environment. Perhaps instead of taking young school pupils under our wings for the purpose of working experience, it is those who make the decisions over us who should be spending enforced periods dealing with customers at the counter and battling with supposedly intelligent machines. That might just put them more in touch with the real world than theatrically staged walkabouts, and shake them out of their comfort zone. Regular readers will know that I often stray from the particular brief of this column, being digital imaging, and not be surprised at this initial rant. It is inevitable that trade magazines tend to concentrate of the specific and not cover the wider situation, but I think that sometimes it is worth opening a small window to let in a blast of air from the world outside. I am tempted to do this because it occurs to me that in a busy working print shop, with the pressure of customer demand and the limitations of things like cash flow, technical problems and the like which we have to juggle with every day, the decisions we have to make, often in an instant, are just as critical in proportion. The fact that we manage to do it without bringing the whole structure down upon our heads on a weekly basis has to say something about the ability of a business to survive, if not prosper, in difficult circumstances. It is hard to comprehend how huge mistakes can be made at a national level, in purchasing for example, where new computers are bought for many times their market price, and even then aren’t fit for the purpose intended. The whole beauty of information technology is that such relevant details are instantly available to the non-expert at the touch of a button on a search engine. Not

only competitive pricing, but reviews of equipment, help and advice forums – there is no excuse for lack of knowledge. It’s bad enough when things that are designed as fit for purpose go wrong. When too many things are reliant upon one system, it is inevitable that a gremlin will bring the whole thing down. While composing this month’s theme a visit to Brighton railway station revealed a horde of early morning commuters looking like a casting call for a remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Hastily produced notices announced that as the main server had gone down, no tickets could be issued from the automated systems. And of course, as Southern Rail, probably like most operators, is dependent upon the stand alone ticket machines to ease queues, and has reduced staff to save costs, it had a big problem. Fortunately, before a riot broke out, amongst already hard put-upon customers who have to endure the daily meat grinder that is commuting, someone took the decision to open all the gates and let people on the trains. I wonder which consultancy firm recommended Southern Rail’s server, or perhaps someone just tripped over a plug? Some of these alleged experts could have done well to pay a visit to at least some of the events taking place in Brighton during September’s Digital Festival. Primarily an arts and entertainment directed festival, with 50 individual events covering music, lighting and imaging, there were a few gems to be picked from something that was so much more than a collection of anoraked geeks. Every development in technology in the present day has some relevance to other areas of interest. A small step in one direction may be a giant leap in another, often with unexpected results, such is the progress of information exchanged. Three dimensional printing and projection of images was among many interesting features on the menu. I have mentioned 3D printing before, used previously to create models without the need of expensive and lengthy moulding processes. Think of an inkjet printer that sprays into a sealed chamber instead of onto a flat surface and builds up layers to create a shape. One designer is using the process to make individual figures of the characters in computer games, and doing very nicely. Think of the possibilities when 3D printers are available to the digital print shop and the print-on mug seems like an antique from another age in comparison. Reassuringly for those who like myself have a healthy amount of scepticism about some aspects of the IT revolution, the festival was not a celebration of all the exciting marketing possibilities so often seen in the launch of new products. One of the running themes was a real need to make the technology user friendly to everyone, not just the specialists, vital when it appears that intelligent design is likely to be incorporated in almost everything we do in future. As well as talking to your fridge and the heating system, you will even be able to call up your dog from a distance. Remote printing, in accessing machines from mobile devices, is already with us. I still prefer to keep an eye on my large format printer from closer range, especially when producing something expensive. A printer colleague has rigged a web cam so he can watch his machine from home while doing long runs overnight. Often it’s the simplest solutions that are the best.

On that theme, one thread that I found great sympathy with was that to avoid the increasing complexity of features. Features are a marketing led aspect, it was argued, not a demand led one. We all know the truth of that as when we update anything from a phone to a kettle, it does many more things than we expected or even wanted. The marketing people are of course obsessed by features as they are major selling promotion, in their eyes at least. How do you raise the value of one item over another if the basic functions are identical? Load it with more features than the other even if most of them will never be used or even understood properly. The problem with the proliferation of features is that it can often make it more difficult to do the basic function it was intended for. This is certainly the case with the most obvious example, the mobile phone, or multi-media communications device as it has now become. It maybe all very well having a nice big screen to watch movies and play games, but most owners who have had them more than a month also seem to have a nice big crack down the middle of them. Equally you will have some sympathy with this anti-feature approach in the print shop. We have inevitably come a long way from one big green button to press for all operations, but is it progress when the simplest standard tasks, like enlarging in proportion or changing paper weight, are a serious intellectual challenge. I thought the idea of intelligent machines was that they took all the hard thinking work out of it. The thinking side of it is still what humans do best. I don’t need my large format printer to tell me the paper is not straight when I can see that for myself, and correct it long before it can. It’s the logical thinking that seems to have got lost

v i v i d.

somewhere amongst the proliferation of features that are supposedly useful. Keep it simple should be the watchword. Perhaps the answer is to have machines that do less, just have more of them. Take the stapler for example, one of the least sophisticated devices in the office, and the easiest to operate and understand. It is very simple, if you press it and the staple comes out wonky, you can see that. If nothing comes out at all there are only two possibilities: it has either jammed in the breach or run out of staples. I have yet to see or feel the need for a hi-tech digital stapler, but no doubt if the marketing department of some office equipment manufacturer was working on one it would have a host of alternative feature and settings, be continually warning you about its status, and eventually trying to contact a helpful engineer in Germany. Of course, as many of you will know to your cost, the other side of all this helpful technology is that the humans who are supposed to do the hard thinking, do less of it, and become increasingly dependent on what the machine is telling them, rather than what logically is the case. The machines, on the other hand have no interest in the welfare of your business, or the service provided to your customer. They are simply there to function, quite dispassionately, they don’t have to pay off the bank overdraft - at least not directly. Where do we go from here? I think it is safe to say that the future of digital technology is quite unpredictable with many twists and turns to come. At least it’s good to know that there are some people out there in the revolution who are not in favour of novelty for novelty’s sake. Hopefully they will have a hand in the direction of some manufacturers rather than the desires of hit hungry salesmen. They might even find a useful role advising government departments. Now that would be a refreshing novelty!

Trophex 2012 will take place from 15th to 16th January 2012 at the NEC in Birmingham. Trophex is always a popular show for the industry and the 2011 exhibition was no exception. It is the only major UK show which is devoted to the trophy, awards and engraving industry and boasts a vast array of regular and new exhibitors every year. When reflecting on the 2011 show, Mike Lewis from Hybrid said: “Trophex was inspiring; it’s fantastic to have a presence here.” Regular exhibitor Trendsetting Awards also had a great show with a brand new stand which was much larger than previous shows. The luxury of having a specific seating and sales area and the opportunity to show more of their products worked very well, attracting lots of new business. This year’s Trophex exhibition also proved to be extremely successful for Nova Chrome UK, as higher than anticipated visitor numbers and a range of new trophy related products generated a great deal of interest over the course of the two day event Jeremy Lowes from Crystal Galleries was “Extremely impressed with the quantity and quality of visitors at this years show.” Jeremy added: “We received a far higher number of orders from customers looking to start up in glass engraving and take advantage of our 28 years experience in the industry. We have been selling our sandblasting cabinets for over 18 years and many of the original cabinets are still operating to the same high standard as when they were first installed. Every product that we had on display at the show was new to the range and covered every category from tableware, bowls and vases to desktop gifts and awards”. New to Trophex 2011 were the Trophex Awards. The organisers were extremely pleased with the fantastic response that the awards created from both the voters and entries alike. With a total of seven categories, exhibitors battled it out to be one of the seven lucky winners of the awards. Samples of each entry were displayed on the TEN stand at the show, attracting and encouraging visitors to vote for their favourite products. Winners included TheMagicTouch who won the ‘Best in New Technology’ award for the OED 8.1 (Opaque Reverse Decoration) transfer paper which offers the opportunity to quickly and easily decorate a comprehensive range of glass and acrylic based products in full colour. Watkiss special finishing equipment packages watKIss Automation has announced a series of special sales packages for UK printers investing in collating, booklet making and perfect binding equipment during the remainder of 2011. The first package to be announced is for a BookMaster booklet maker and trimmer with a SpineMaster SquareBack book finisher. This special package is offered at £17,500, a saving of over 20% off the normal retail price. “Our customers need to justify every penny spent on capital equipment and make sure that they realise a return on investment as quickly as possible.” explains Sales Director Paul Attew “This package will be especially interesting to small to medium sized digital print businesses. Typically they will be running print engines that produce from around 60 pages per minute and will have a requirement for an offline booklet making solution.” The BookMaster booklet maker features a unique staple system that requires virtually zero maintenance. It performs well on heavy art

papers, an important feature for digital print applications, and it also produces well formed staples on booklets ranging from 2 to 22 sheets. With the SpineMaster attached, the system produces SquareBack booklets, that have the flat appearance of perfect binding, but the security of a stitched spine. The square spine makes it possible to print on the spine, as on a perfect bound book. This professional appearance gives added value to the finished product. Watkiss will be announcing further special packages soon. All offers are valid for orders placed by the end of 2011. Attractive finance terms are available if required. Sales diversion From the copier sales community where drink driving was once considered part of the job, comes a true story from somewhere in sunny Surrey. Apparently a routine police patrol parked outside a copier dealers local tavern. Late in the evening the officer noticed a salesman leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the car park for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five vehicles, the man managed to find his company car which he fell into. He was there for a few minutes as a number of other salesmen left the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a fine dry night) flicked the indicators on, then off, tooted the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained stationary for a few more minutes as some more vehicles left. At last he pulled out of the car park and started to drive slowly down the road. The police officer, having patiently waited all this time, now started up the patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and carried out a breathalyser test. To his amazement the breathalyser indicated no evidence of the man having consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said ‘I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station this breathalyser equipment must be broken.’ ‘I doubt it,’ said the salesman, ‘Tonight I’m the designated decoy.

Sales delivery A salesman whose wife was pregnant couldn’t bear to be in the delivery room at the time of the birth. So he thought he’d ring up later to see if it had come yet. He rang up and the nurse said “it’s a girl but there’s another one on the way” He rang again later and the nurse said “it’s another girl but there’s another coming” He rang once more and the nurse said “ it’s a boy but there’s another coming” He couldn’t stand it any more so he went to the pub and got drunk. An hour later he was really nervous. He was dialling the hospital, hands shaking, and accidentally dialled the sports line. He asked “ how many did we get mate” the person said “198 all out.... and the last one was a duck”

Black and white quote A panda bear walks into a bar and orders a sandwich. The waiter brings him the sandwich. The panda bear eats it, pulls out a pistol, kills the waiter, and gets up and starts to walk out. The bartender yells for him to stop. The panda bear asks, “What do you want?” The bartender replies, “First you come in here, order food, kill my waiter, then try to go without paying for your food.” The panda bear turns around and says, “Hey! I’m a Panda. Look it up!” The bartender goes into the back room and looks up panda bear in the encyclopedia, which read: “Panda: a bear-like marsupial originating in Asian regions. Known largely for its stark black and white colouring. Eats shoots and leaves.”

Stateside Schooling It was the first day of school after summer vacation. The kids had all arrived in the new school English class, and were chatting away, making new friends. THEN…In walked a very stern looking English teacher and a hush fell over the room as the kids scurried to their seats. The stern teacher silently panned his gaze across all the kids. After about a minute or so, he spoke... “From the outset, I want you all to know that there are two words that are absolutely unacceptable in this classroom. You cannot use them as you recite, or in any of your papers, tests, or homework. Using these words even once, will get you a failing grade for that term. The first one is “gross” And the other one is “cool” Are there any questions?” After a few moments of silence, this gawky teen at the back of the room raises his hand, and the teacher calls upon him. In a pubescent croaking voice, the kid asks...“So, what are they?”

Drill Bit After a hard day of drilling, the drill sergeant let the troops go. “All right, you idiots, report to the mess hall.” Everybody walked away, sweating and their heads down, thankful for the end of the hard day. Only one private remained. He looked at the officer and sincerely said, “Boy, there sure were a lot of them, huh, serge.”

Check Mate A man walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had. He replied, “I got shingles.” She said, “Fill out this form and supply your name, address, medical insurance number. When you’re done, please take a seat.” Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked him what he had. He said, “I got shingles.” So she took down his height, weight, and complete medical history, then said, “Change into this gown and wait in the examining room.” A half hour later a nurse came in and asked him what he had. He said, “I got shingles.” So she gave him a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told him to wait for the doctor. An hour later the doctor came in and asked him what he had. He said, “Shingles.” The doctor gave him a full-cavity examination, and then said, “I just checked you out thoroughly, and I can’t find shingles anywhere. “ The man replied, “They’re outside in the truck. Where do you want them?”

Be careful what you wish for Married couples, both 60 years old, were celebrating their 35th anniversary. During their party, a fairy appeared to congratulate them and grant them each one a wish. The wife wanted to travel around the world. The fairy waved her wand and poof -- the wife had tickets in her hand for a world cruise. Next, the fairy asked the husband what he wanted. He said, “I wish I had a wife 30 years younger than me.” So the fairy picked up her wand and poof -- the husband was 90.

Bar Fly A salesman runs into the bar and says, “Quick, pour me 5 shots of your best vodka.” The barman pours them and the salesman drinks them as fast as he can. “Wow that’s the fastest I’ve seen anyone drink,” says the barman. “Well you’d drink that fast if you had what I had,” The salesman replies. “Oh really,” the barman says, “What do you have?” The salesman replies, “50 pence.”

Be careful what you eat Five cannibals get appointed as programmers in an IT company. During the welcoming ceremony the boss says: ‘You’re all part of our team now. You can earn good money here, and you can go to the company canteen for something to eat. So don’t trouble the other employees’. The cannibals promise not to trouble the other employees. Four weeks later the boss returns and says: ‘You’re all working very hard, and I’m very satisfied with all of you. One of our cleaners has disappeared however. Do any of you know what happened to her?’ The cannibals deny all knowledge of the missing cleaner. After the boss has left, the leader of the cannibals says to the others: ‘Which of you idiots ate the cleaner?’. A hand raises hesitantly, to which the leader of the cannibals says: ‘You fool! For four weeks we’ve been eating Sales Team Leaders, Sales Managers, and Project Managers so no-one would notice anything, and you have to go and eat the cleaner!

Quick Fire • I was at a cashpoint yesterday when a little old lady asked if I could check her balance. • Not being one to disappoint I gave her a big push and she fell over. • Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not happy. • Just heard there was an explosion at a pie factory in Huddersfield. • 3.1415927 dead • I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move. • Husband says to wife “My Olympic condoms have arrived – I think I’ll wear gold tonight”. Wife says, “Why don’t you wear silver and come second for a change”.

Field Accompaniment Two drunken salesmen were driving home. The first started screaming: - Jim, watch out for the wall, watch out for the waaaaall! Baaaaam! They crash through the wall and into a field. The next day in the hospital the first salesman asked his friend “You good for nothing brainless rep, I’ve been screaming for you to watch out, why didn’t you?” Jim answered him. “IT WAS YOU DRIVING!!!”

Addressing the balance A young woman teacher with obvious liberal tendencies explains to her class of small children that she is an atheist. She asks her class if they are atheists too. Not really knowing what atheism is but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like fleshy fireworks. There is, however, one exception. A beautiful girl named Lucy has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. ‘Because I’m not an atheist.’ Then, asks the teacher, ‘What are you?’ ‘I’m a Christian.’ The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Lucy why she is a Christian. ‘Well, I was brought up knowing and loving Jesus. My mum is a Christian, and my dad is a Christian, so I am a Christian.’ The teacher is now angry. ‘That’s no reason.’ she says loudly. What if your mum was a moron, and your dad was a moron. what would you be then?’ She paused, and smiled. ‘Then,’ says Lucy, ‘I’d be an atheist.’

OH DEAR… • My neighbour works in the operations department in the central office of a large bank. Employees in the field call him when they have problems with their computers. One night he got a call from a woman in one of the branch banks who had this question: ‘I’ve got smoke coming from the back of my terminal. Do you guys have a fire downtown?’ • I was sitting in my science class, when the teacher commented that the next day would be the shortest day of the year. My lab partner became visibly excited, cheering and clapping. I explained to him that the amount of daylight changes, not the actual amount of time. Needless to say, he was very disappointed.

Did you hear about the two radio antennas that got married?

• Police in Radnor, Pennsylvania, interrogated a suspect by placing a metal colander on his head and connecting it with wires to a photocopy machine. The message ‘He’s lying’ was placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy button each time they thought the suspect wasn’t telling the truth. Believing the ‘lie detector’ was working, the suspect confessed.

So I… • So I met this gangster who pulls up the back of people’s pants, it was Weggie Kray. • So I said ‘Do you want a game of Darts?’, he said ‘OK then’, I said ‘Nearest to bull starts’. He said ‘Baa’, I said ‘Moo’, he said ‘You’re closest’. • So I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow. I rang her up, I said ‘Do you get my drift?’ • So I went down the local supermarket, I said ‘I want to make a complaint, this vinegar’s got lumps in it’, he said ‘Those are pickled onions’. • So I went to the Chinese restaurant and this duck came up to me with a red rose and says ‘Your eyes sparkle like diamonds’. I said ‘Waiter, I asked for a-ROMATIC duck’. But I’m in great mood tonight because the other day I entered a competition and I won a years supply of Marmite... one jar. • So I said to this bloke, ‘Can I come in your house and talk about your carpets?’ He thought ‘That’s all I need, a Je-hoover’s witness’. • So I see my next door neighbour worships exhaust pipes…he’s a catholic converter. • So I rang up British Telecom, I said ‘I want to report a nuisance caller’, he said ‘Not you again’. • So I know all male tennis players are witches, for example, Goran, even he’s a witch. • So I was in Tesco’s and I saw this man and woman wrapped in a barcode. I said ‘Are you two an item?’ • So I saw a lorry-load of tortoises crashed into a train-load of terrapins, I thought ‘That’s a turtle disaster’

The wedding was terrible, but the reception was excellent!

R U Sure? Two molecules are walking down the street; one bumps into the other and says: “Oh, my fault, you okay? The Second Molecule says: “No, I’m not ok, I’ve lost an electron!” So the first molecule says: “Are you sure” the second molecule answers, “I’m positive!”

HELP ‘ME’ DESK Tech Support: “I need you to rightclick on the Open Desktop.” Customer: “Ok.” Tech Support: “Did you get a popup menu?” Customer: “No.” Tech Support: “Ok. Right click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?” Customer: “No.” Tech Support: “Ok, Sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?” Customer: “Sure, you told me to write ‘click’ and I wrote click’.”

Doh! The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so Gomer, who was not exactly the sharpest nail in the bucket, went in to try out for the job. “Okay,” the sheriff drawled, “Gomer, what is 1 and 1?” “11” he replied. The sheriff thought to himself, “That’s not what I meant, but he’s right. What two days of the week start with the letter ‘T’?” “Today and tomorrow.” The sheriff was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself. “Now Gomer, listen carefully: Who killed Abraham Lincoln?” Gomer looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, “I don’t know.” “Well, why don’t you go home and work on that one for a while?” So, Gomer wandered over to the barbershop where his pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview. Gomer was exultant. “It went great! First day on the job and I’m already working on a murder case!”

What do you call a Frenchman wearing sandals?

Good Game An Australian guy goes into a bar in the Greek Islands. Jill, the Australian barmaid takes his order and notices his Australian accent. Over the course of the night they talk quite a bit. At the end of the night he asks her if she wants to have sex with him. Although she is attracted to him she says no. He then offers to pay her $200 for the deed. Jill is travelling the world and because she is short of funds she agrees. The next night the guy turns up again and after showing her plenty of attention throughout the night he asks if she will sleep with him again for $200. She figures in for a penny in for a pound - and it was fantastic the night before - so she agrees. This goes on for 5 nights. On the sixth night the guy comes into the bar. But this night he orders a beer and just goes and sits in the corner. Jill is disappointed and thinks that maybe she should pay him more attention. She goes over and sits next to him. She asks him where he is from and he tells her Melbourne. ‘So am I‘ she says. ‘What suburb in Melbourne.’ ‘Glen Iris’ he says. ‘That’s amazing’ she says,’ so am I what street?’ ‘Cameo Street’ he says.’ ‘This is unbelievable’ she says,’ what number?’ He says ‘Number 20’ and she is astonished. ‘You are not going to believe this’ she says, ‘ I’m from number 22 and my parents still live there!’ ‘ I know’ he says’ ... your father gave me $1,000 to give you!’

Stationery Sex “Did you hear about the bloke who bought a bottle of liquid Viagra?” “He drank Tippex by mistake and woke up with an enormous correction.”
