Cover story: BFI iMax is third London Calling Venue
d
uPlO INteRNAtIONAl, SuPPORted by Finishing Alliance partners Friedheim International and RENZ, have announced that their third annual London Calling event will be hosted at the BFI IMAX in Waterloo. The event, titled ‘LONDON CALLING 3D’, is where all Finishing Alliance partners will exhibit as one and take over the whole building for two days, with the show running on September 21st and 22nd. A full list of the products at the BFI IMAX will be announced later, but key highlights will include the UK debut of the latest generation Duplo DC-745 multi finisher, a new compact version of the best selling MOBI 500 binding machine from Renz, and from Friedheim International the Tecnograf ANT 250 compact, semi-automatic, single clamp PUR/Hot-Melt perfect binder for short and medium run applications. Duplo will also be showing the new iXE-10
digital die cutting solution from Esko Artwork and the recently announced Touchline CF375 from Multigraph. Tony Lock, Managing Director Duplo UK comments: “Finishing has had a great year (as the latest purchasing surveys confirm), and as our London Calling II show in the Tate Modern last year was our most successful on record, we thought it was a great opportunity to build on the last two years of London shows and run a London Calling 3D. We are thrilled to secure such a high technology venue as the IMAX which has the biggest 3D cinema screen in the UK.” “We do understand, however, that there needs to be a very good reason to come to any print related event, and we believe the Finishing Alliance partnership is that reason. We will have the widest range of automated and precise finishing equipment available under one roof. We encourage print companies to come along with their finishing needs and issues; as an Alliance we can find the right solution from all our ranges that suit specific requirements.” Onsite, as visitors enter the IMAX foyer, there will be a live ‘Finishing Alliance Trail’ showcasing an example of how the equipment within the three companies can work together to turn print into a stunning finished three dimensional product. According to Duplo, the show is aimed primarily at commercial printers, in-plant print managers and design companies ‘who are looking for a way to either cut costs or differentiate their business with finishing’. Duplo will also be asking their regional dealers and digital press vendor partners to invite their own customer base to the show to see their finishing range. The Finishing Alliance will also host a VIP night on Wednesday 21st September where guests will have a ‘full-on’ 3D experience in the IMAX cinema. www.duplouk.co.uk
And the winners are…
the draw has been made and the Sign & Digital UK team, in conjunction with the competition sponsor Hybrid Services, are delighted to announce that two visitors to the 2011 show have been selected at random and won two VIP tickets to Old Trafford to watch a top flight game. “We believe that this prize went down well at the 2010 show and so decided to repeat it for 2011. We will be looking to do something even bigger and better for 2012 and will keep you posted once the final decision is taken” says Alan Caddick, marketing manager on the show. Each winner had to register for the show online, visit and stop off at the Hybrid Services stand to qualify. The two winners have won two tickets each to see a football match at Old Trafford during the 2011/2012 season, including hospitality, food and drink which is all part of the VIP package. So congratulations go to the two winners; Anthony Harrison of Splatt Print in London and Martin Denton from Sign*A*Rama in Stockport Anthony said “For a young, innovative and forward thinking company, Sign & Digital UK provided us with inspiration and contacts to push our business into new realms. Hailing from a repro print
background we were toying with a move into wide format but weren’t sure where to go. A chance conversation with one of our service engineers resulted in a reconnaissance mission to Birmingham and now along with a new printer, dye sublimation equipment and eyeleting hardware, we’ve got VIP tickets for a game at Old Trafford. Can’t be bad! Thank you Mimaki for the competition and roll on Sign & Digital UK 2012.” Martin comments “Having done various work at Old Trafford, it will be great to visit as a spectator and see it all from a different perspective. As always, our trip to Sign & Digital UK was extremely worthwhile, with new products sourced and new suppliers added to our list of contacts but this is the icing on the cake. Our thanks go out to Hybrid Services (Mimaki) for the tickets and the organisers for putting on another good show.” Alan Caddick, marketing manager for Sign & Digital UK adds, “The show is a massive opportunity and this just highlights one of the many reasons as to why visitors should make the trip to the NEC in March 2012.” For those visitors interested in registering, please go to the website www. signanddigitaluk.com and click on the Visitor Registration button where you will be able to leave your details in order that you can be informed once visitor registration goes live!

The only problem was that the company’s finishing equipment was simply not good enough to do the print justice. Mike Brydon explains, “We were doing everything manually. The DC-615 is a preprogrammble digital finisher that cuts and creases SRA3 sheets down to finished products. According to the literature, it can produce 1200 greetings cards or 6000 business cards per hour with no manual intervention. Mike has been more than happy with the investment and added, “Not only has the Duplo improved the productivity, it has dramatically increased the quality of what we are producing. We use the registration mark function so when we are creasing cards or trifold leaflets we know that even if the image has moved slightly the crease is always in exactly the right place.” The DC-615 uses a vacuum and conveyor system to feed sheets from the top. There are individual controls on the fan and the separator but Brydon has found adjustments unnecessary; “We tend to use 170gsm for leaflets and 300gsm for everything else and no matter what we load onto it, it just feeds, we don’t have to change anything”. deNmAuR ANd ONe WORd bRIef’S mOSt POPulAR deSIgNS the first exhibition by design collective, One Word Brief, has concluded with the announcement of the three most popular designs, as voted for by visitors to the One Word Brief live and online exhibitions. One Word Brief asked designers to respond to one of six one word briefs: CHANGE; SEARCH; FREEDOM; SOCIAL; SPACE; ENOUGH The open exhibition, sponsored by Denmaur Independent Papers, had two simple aims: To engage the design community in an opportunity for creative self expression and to remind people how great graphic design can be. The three most popular designs were produced by Corissa Taber, who chose to respond to the one word brief FREEDOM, Ben Philp, who chose CHANGE and Andres Santana who selected ENOUGH. The three designers and their guests will be taken on a two day all expenses paid trip to Nordland
Mill, the home of UPM Fine in Germany, by Denmaur Independent Papers. Denmaur sponsored the One Word Brief exhibition, selecting UPM Fine as the official exhibition paper for submissions to be printed on. Zoltan Marfy creative director and co-founder of One Word Brief commented, “We’ve been amazed by the number of responses to our six one word briefs in the first year of our existence and have welcomed work from designers as far afield as Switzerland, Romania, Canada, Australia and India. This was an opportunity for designers to express themselves freely without clients or agencies getting in their way. We’re looking forward to creating that same opportunity for designers again.” Tom Jansz of Denmaur Independent Paper commented, “Congratulations, to all those who have taken part. We look forward to taking our guests to Germany, and beyond that to celebrating everyones work in the One Word Brief book we have planned.” For a free copy of the new UPM Fine swatch, to join the mailing list for One Word Brief 2012, or for further information on Denmaur Independent Papers and its services, please contact Denmaur Independent Papers’ Marketing Manager, Andy Bruguier or visit www.denmaur.com

Minprint widen product range with Mimaki
m
INPRINt ltd IS a Belfast based commercial printer operating from 12,000sq foot premises serving not only the Northern Irish market but customers throughout the UK. With a substantial litho print division at its core, Minprint’s product range has grown to offer a whole spectrum of short run digital and wide format work alongside their more usual output Their recent investment in a Mimaki JV33-160 outdoor durable printer and matching Mimaki CG-FXII cutting plotter has significantly increased the productivity of their wide format operation and allowed them to further expand not only their product portfolio but improve the lead times with which they can work.
Director at Minprint, Jamie McMinnis points to two important features of the Mimaki solution that have benefitted their workflow – the increased print width over his previous wide format printer and the rewards of having a separate printer and cutting plotter. Whilst there are tangible advantages when using an integrated printer/cutter (a smaller footprint and relatively
unattended operation) for volume production, the capacity of separate machines cannot be beaten. “We’ve seen the new Mimaki hardware ramp up our production since its installation,” remarks McMinnis, “we’re delighted that the quality of the output using the new SS21 ink allows us to offer a superior product even at higher run speeds with fewer passes.” “The Mimaki technology is so impressive that along with our new printer we have purchased a CG160-FXII plotter. It’s ideal for kiss cut and half cut labels but also useful for window graphics and all aspects of signage,” he comments. The Mimaki JV33-160 and CG-FXII is a popular production combination, able to deliver high volumes of photo quality work at up to 1.6m wide – greater than Minprint’s previous capabilities. Subsequently, their portfolio now includes large format banners, posters, POS material, canvas prints, exhibition and vehicle graphics and by utilising the accurate contour and die cutting features of the CG-FXII cutting plotter, they can now also supply attractive stickers, decals and promotional products. With a history stretching back some 35 years, Minprint continues to look to the future. Investing in the latest technology is something that McMinnis puts down to the company’s ongoing success and they have big plans to expand into new markets. “We serve a broad range of clients – from small local businesses right through to multinational blue chip companies. Being able to offer new products from the Mimaki has seen us grow that part of our operation considerably.” In July, Minprint started a 24 hour, triple shift day – fighting hard out of recession and delivering faster turnaround times and further improved ability to hit rapid delivery deadlines. With this combined commitment to customer service and investment in new technology, it’s no wonder Minprint is doing so well. www.minprint.co.uk, www.hybridservices.co.uk
Papico’s positive environmental email message P
APeR AgeNt PAPIcO is encouraging the printing industry and paper manufacturers to adopt positive statements on the footer of emails as a way of endorsing the sustainability of paper. The Yorkshire based company has opted to use a positive statement as a backlash against negative messages often sent out by the industry. Papico worked with facts provided by industry organisations Two Sides and PaperImpact to come up with the statement. Papico director, Paul Johnston-Knight commented on the move: “Prompted by a customer who did something similar we wondered if it was acceptable for printers and paper makers to send emails with the ubiquitous “think of the planet, please don’t print this e-mail” appended to the message. So we decided to shed some green light on the truth about paper’s environmental credentials.” Paul added: “We feel that the industry itself needs to promote a more positive message in email correspondence. It is a very negative situation to be in when even print companies and their subsidiaries use anti-paper messages.”
The message, featured below is worded to promote all the environmental benefits associated with the sustainability of paper including tree planting and harvesting. Please don’t be alarmed or feel guilty: it’s OK to print this e-mail. Paper is a biodegradable, compostable, renewable, sustainable product made from trees. Growing and harvesting trees provides jobs for millions of men and women. Working forests are good for the environment, providing clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat and carbon storage. Papico is also including a link underneath the footer which relates back to a section on its website that gives interesting facts and figures about the sustainability of paper: www.papico.co.uk/news/Paper-is-GREEN-69876 Paul Johnston-Knight concluded: “We need to accept that, although email is a welcome and very much acceptable way of communicating, we need to back this up with positive messages about paper and not discourage people from printing out email correspondence if they want to.”

NINE WINNERS FOR THE PRINT FUTURES AWARDS 2011 N
OW IN theIR eighth year of helping young people train for a job and future career in the UK printing, publishing and graphic arts industries, this year’s shortlisted applicants so impressed the judging panel that it decided to award nine Print Futures Awards under the annual scheme sponsored by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Unite the Union and The Printing Charity. The nine winners had to convince the judges that they deserved an award to help them complete their studies or undertake short term courses to further develop their skills. The awards of up to £1,500 each are open to people aged 16 to 30 years to help pay for tuition fees and other costs associated with part-time or full-time training courses or degree education. “Every year I’m impressed by the enthusiasm of the applicants, but even more so this year,” said Dale Wallis, BPIF Membership Director. “The 2011 winners’ passion for design and print shone through.” Steve Sibbald, Unite national officer, commented: “It’s vital that we invest in the industry’s future and encourage young people to develop the skills to take the industry forward. This year’s winners may be the innovators to do just that and we wish them all the best in their careers.” Konica Minolta very kindly hosted the awards ceremony at its London headquarters on 13 July. The event was attended by senior representatives from the three sponsors and the industry, as well as the winners’ personal guests.
the 2011 PRINt futuReS AWARdS WINNeRS ARe: Francesca Tortora: Francesca works as a Project Manager for the BBC Performing Arts Fund. She has a first class honours BA in Music from Leeds University but working for the BBC has stimulated her interest in graphic design. She has already produced a range of print and digital materials and wishes to go further. Her award will fund a one-year, part-time course in graphic computer design at Shillington College, London. Charlie Browning: Charlie is a student at the London College of Communication in his second year studying for a BA in Print Media Management As well as contributing to his course fee, Charlie hopes to spend some of his award funding a visit to the Drupa exhibition in Germany in 2012. Mandy Horton: Mandy, who lives and works in Brighton, is employed as a junior designer and marketing executive with a Brighton agency. She already has a BA Hons degree in Fine Art Printmaking and a BTec Diploma in Art & Design and now plans an intensive summer course in the intricacies of the ancient art of letterpress! Rebecca Foulkes: Rebecca is currently working for her family’s Brighton based business, Colourfast. She will be using her award to fund a part time web design course to enable her to develop a web design and web hosting service for customers.
Out and about with PrintIT! StudeNtS from Bacon’s College in South London visited printing company Velmex recently, specialists in large and wide format printing, gaining practical experience of the industry. Design teacher Sam Nanor said his students had benefitted greatly from the opportunity to learn about and use modern printing techniques. “It was a great opportunity for our students to see commercial printing processes in progress. We do a lot of graphic design here at Bacon’s College but we output everything on laser printers – many of our students haven’t known or seen any other type of printer,” he said. Students learned about several aspects of the print industry and were given the opportunity to apply their new skills. “We showed the students the printers and how the technology works. They saw all the prints coming out and learned about how to use the software, how to edit photos and how to print their photos. In the second half of the day they started printing out posters they’d designed at school,” said Velmex
Melanie Rogan: Melanie, who hails from Ireland, already has a BA Hons degree in Ancient History & Archaeology and History of Art and Architecture. She is now in her second year studying for a BA Hons in Graphic Design at the London Metropolitan University and will use the award to fund her studies, including summer courses to develop her skills. Alexandra Lunn: Alexandra is studying Visual Communications Design at the Glasgow School of Art, where she is a student representative for two disciplines. She says her Print Futures Awards will allow her to complete her studies and undertake a one month placement at the European Exchange Academy in Berlin. Nazeefa Ahmed: Nazeefa has just completed her second year studying for a BA in Design and Colour Technology at the University of Leeds. She will use her award to fund an unpaid summer work placement and to buy an Apple Mac. Marie Cleaver: Marie from Southsea in Hampshire has a passion for typography and graphic design and has achieved a first class BA Hons in Graphic Design. She will now be able to fund a Masters at the University of Portsmouth and pursue research into one of her major areas of interest – the gap between science and information design. Jasmine Paradine-James: Jasmine is keen to finish a third and final year at the London College of Communication and complete her degree in Graphic Design. “I’m excited and committed to embarking on a career involved in designing for all things print based,” she says. To find out more about the Print Futures Awards, see www. printfuturesawards.com or contact Terry Ulrick, the Awards Secretary, on 01444 831918 or email: terryulrick@tucommunications.co.uk
Managing Director Mark Keeley. The visit was organised to strengthen the relationship initially established through the PrintIT! twinning programme. An initiative led by Proskills, PrintIT! aims to encourage students to consider a career in the print industry; Mr Nanor believes it is important to heighten students awareness of the career opportunities open to them. “We try to guide the students through the various career paths on offer and the opportunities open to them. It’s good for them to see what they can do in the working world with the skills we are helping them develop - it encourages them to be interested in the print industry and reinforces the importance of their education,” he stressed. Bacon’s College specialises in digital media, so the print industry is one potential career path for students. “Many of the students are very interested in the print industry and the visit opened their eyes to the career opportunities out there, opportunities that they didn’t know about before going on the visit,” continued Mr Nanor. KIP launches low cost ‘point of need’ print system KIP, a specialist supplier of wide format digital reprographic systems, has launched the KIP 700RC multi-function print system in the UK. An ultra compact, exceptionally low cost and versatile solution targeted squarely at ‘point of need’ applications such as design offices and site locations, the 700RC (Roll/Cassette) is equipped with both paper feed roll and paper cassette enabling quick and easy printing of all A size prints without changing rolls, cutting down on print time and wastage. Based on KIP’s world leading 100% toner efficient HDP mono print engine technology, the KIP 700RC also features a high grade built in colour scanner with the ability to print and copy directly to colour inkjets, delivering significant productivity and cost savings over competing all in one inkjet based mono/colour solutions that not only have limited multiple task handling capability but also print speeds and costs that vary with image content. In keeping with KIP’s ‘family’ approach to product standardisation, the KIP 700RC shares the same award winning touchscreen user interface and software platform as the entire range of KIP systems, offering significant technical and operational advantages while also giving entry level users access to high end productivity and management tools, including full cost accounting. Also in common with other KIP systems, the 700RC offers a key code upgrade path for scan to file and direct copy to inkjet, providing a very low cost entry point for basic print and copy applications while providing a versatile and cost effective route to more sophisticated facilities as required. The KIP 700RC supports the full range of architectural and engineering print sizes through combined use of a front loading paper roll and
integrated paper cassette, the latter extending the range of print sizes that can be produced without the need to change paper rolls and addressing a growing demand for fast, half size prints and check prints for meetings or review. Grainger Hill of KIP UK comments: “The KIP 700RC is a truly significant breakthrough for the entry level print market, offering users and small businesses significant cost savings and productivity gains over inkjet based all in one mono/colour systems. Monitoring and controlling costs has never mattered so much, both at the sharp end of delivery and at a wider level within geographically distributed organisations, and our systems offer major advantages in this regard. KIP’s modular approach and keycode upgrade path are also deeply significant, dropping the cost of entry to an even lower level: for analogue users there has never been a better time to go digital; for existing digital users, KIP systems offer cost savings and productivity benefits unmatched by anything else in the market.” www.kipuk.com

Adobe announces Website Creation Tool for Graphic Designers Adobe Systems Incorporated has unveiled the public beta of Muse (code name), software that enables graphic designers to design and publish professional, unique HTML websites without writing code or working within restrictive templates. Leveraging the latest Web standards including HTML5 and CSS3 where browser support exists, Muse combines precise design and creative freedom with innovative frameworks for adding navigation, widgets and HTML to include advanced interactivity on a site. “The ability to build websites as easily as laying out a page in InDesign is one of the most popular requests from our design customers,” says Lea Hickman, vice president of Design and Web product management at Adobe. “Those who have tested Muse are thrilled that something this intuitive yet powerful is now available.” Designers are invited to learn more about Muse by visiting www.muse.adobe.com where they can download the free beta (English only), see a gallery of Muse-created websites, and access instructional tutorials.
Plan, Design and Publish Unique and Interactive Websites: • Easy to use sitemaps, master pages, and a host of flexible, site wide tools make it fast and intuitive to plan the website layout. • Designers can combine imagery, graphics, and text with complete control, flexibility and power, similar to Adobe InDesign functionality. Muse provides drag and drop customisable widgets like navigation menus. Users can add fully customisable interactive elements including slideshows, Tooltips and remote rollovers. • Muse embeds HTML code snippets from sources including Google Maps, YouTube and Facebook. • Muse allows for the creation of Adobehosted trial sites for testing and review purposes. A site can be sent to clients, converted to a paid Adobe hosted site or exported for FTP to other hosting providers. “Where has this been all of my web life! Seriously? This is the first web design tool that lets me go back to being a designer and mostly stay in the creative head while still producing web sites. Damn it makes me happy,” said David Lloyd, owner of David Lloyd Imageworks, a design and photography business for creative business solutions. Prontaprint Birmingham revitalises business cards with QRky technology Prontaprint’s Birmingham branches have become the first UK print shops to take advantage of a new quick response business card reseller package from QRky. The package will allow Prontaprint to bring the business cards they produce into the 21st century by incorporating a quick response barcode which, when scanned with a smart phone, links directly to an individual online profile page with contact details and dynamic content drawn from sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter. Graham Hollway, owner of Prontaprint’s Birmingham City Centre and Edgbaston branches, said: “It’s such a simple idea, combining the traditional ritual of exchanging cards when first meeting a new acquaintance whilst linking that directly to the myriad of online profiles we have in this connected digital world. “Our own staff are using QRky cards and have found that as well as containing that extra element of information, presenting a business card printed with that curious looking QR code is a brilliant conversation opener. The customers we have printed them for have been delighted, and we are determined that we won’t print any business cards without strongly recommending our clients make them QRky powered.” Nick Holzherr, founder of QRky, said: “Our new reseller package is designed to give printers the opportunity to sell something extra with the business cards they print, either charging it as an extra, or including it within the price as a point of difference to traditional business card vendors. Either way it gives a chance to offer innovation in business cards, whilst maintaining a company’s visual guidelines. “A clear advantage is that whilst the information printed on a physical card
is static, the content that the QR barcode links to can be changed and updated. This offers some real opportunities, such as linking to a current marketing campaign for instance – the information never need be out of date.” Smart phones now make up more than 80% of the UK contract phone market and the majority of consumers now use phone applications regularly. As a result QR codes are now seen as a must have tool in a marketer’s arsenal, whether traditional blue chips such as Pepsi and Marks & Spencer within their national advertising campaigns or vibrant new brands looking to create market edge through innovative customer interaction. But, warns Holzherr, too many firms are falling into the trap of jumping on the QR bandwagon without giving proper thought to whether using the technology adds real value for an end user. “QR codes have been around for a while now, and consumers are becoming more aware of what these ‘strange black and white square things’ can actually do”, he said. “However it has become clear that using them successfully relies on taking users through to content which is compelling, useful and, critically, optimised for the device it is being viewed on. “Lazily linking through to a normal brand website just doesn’t cut it and risks QR codes being seen as something of a gimmick. Our success to date has been based on our platform powering the mobile experience, rather than the simple mechanism for getting users there.” QRky’s reseller package for printers and designers offers access to a white label portal which allows them to generate QR codes and link these automatically to a personalised profile page for each individual. The card holder can then keep this updated with new information and links, changing the content as often as they like. Packages are available so that resellers are able to offer cards individually or in convenient multiples, catering for organisations of any size. More information on QRky cards and becoming a QRky reseller is available online at www.qrky.co.uk.

Currie’s installs UK’s first Duplo mini suction booklet system
cuRRIe’S Print Centre in West Lothian has become the first UK customer to install a Duplo Mini Suction collator system. Purchased from Well Finished, the system combines Duplo’s new suction fed DSC-10/20 collator with the DBM-120 stapler folder giving a finishing line capable of up to 2,400 booklets per hour. Established 36 years ago, Currie’s Print Centre is a family owned company and is one of the area’s longest running businesses. Under the leadership of Managing Director, Graeme Currie, it has expanded from a traditional litho printer to a full graphic design, litho and digital print service provider. Through careful planning, investment and prudent financial management Graeme has been able to grow the company through the recession, winning new contracts and even taking on new staff. Currie’s Print Centre focuses on the local area and has built up a substantial client base that includes some high profile national and international names. The company produces the football programmes for many local sides including Livingston. Until the investment in new Duplo equipment, Currie’s was using a small friction collator and bookletmaker but as Graeme explains it just wasn’t up to the job, “About 40% of our work these days is produced on the Bizhub and the little friction collator was just too slow and unreliable on glossy stocks. Even when it did feed; we’d get marking so we had to send a lot of bookletmaking work out”. Graeme first saw Duplo’s technology at IPEX and realised it could solve their bookletmaking problems. He asked his local Duplo dealer, Well Finished, to source the product. “I knew I wanted to buy this system from Well Finished because their service has always been second to none. It’s so important buying from someone you can trust”. Since installing the new Duplo system, Graeme has been delighted with the results, “almost overnight we were able to bring in about £5k-£10k worth of work that we were previously out-sourcing”. Graeme continues “the system is significantly quicker than we had before so that we’re now able to pitch for new contracts and look for more work to put on it!” Angela Osborne, Dealer Manager at Duplo concluded, “I’m delighted Currie’s are so pleased with their investment. The DSC-10/20 is the first Duplo suction collator to be made available via our dealer partners and the success of this story really justifies that decision. We have some fantastic dealers who are really in touch with their customers and we’re delighted to have them championing our products.” www.duplouk.co.uk

ARJOWIGGINS TECHNICAL RESEARCH RELATIONSHIP WITH HP ARJOWIggINS Graphic has entered a new research relationship with HP aimed at improving the ability to de-ink printed materials from HP Indigo and HP inkjet digital presses. The relationship has been forged to ensure that paper from HP Indigo Liquid Electrophotographic (LEP) and inkjet digital print jobs can be recycled and ultimately avoid landfills. While currently the amount of LEP and inkjet materials found in the recycling process is small relative to analogue prints such as offset lithography, the use of these types of digital printing technologies will increase. It is therefore essential for the industry to develop effective solutions to ensure compatibility with recycling mills, such as those operated by Arjowiggins Graphic, when digital prints become a more significant portion of the recovered paper stream. The two companies have agreed to test new techniques for de-inking and test on an industrial scale. After in-depth research and scale up tests have been performed, optimised process conditions will be run at Arjowiggins Graphic’s state of the art de-inking plant at Greenfield in France and compared to the current process compatibility with digital prints. John Cooper, Customer Support Director at Arjowiggins Graphic, explains: “The Greenfield mill is one of the most advanced environmentally friendly de-inking sites in Europe. As a result, it is the ideal place to conduct research into de-inking these printed materials. This relationship will contribute to establishing Greenfield as an industry centre for de-inking solutions of digitally printed materials.” Pinni Perlmutter, Director of Technology for HP’s Indigo division, says, “Digital printing has many positive benefits, such as the elimination of warehousing inventory and reduced make ready waste. HP is working to extend those benefits by collaborating with Arjowiggins Graphic to develop a greater scientific understanding of de-inking fundamentals.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Fast forward to a new era in colour printing A company that firmly believes there is a place for high-speed, full, colour inkjet devices is Riso. To best experience this we have installed the new cut sheet inkjet printer in the CSN beta test suite. Full case study report next month or come down to Brighton and have yourself a test drive.
A
t IPEX 2010 it launched its new range of ComColor A3 andA4 sheet-fed inkjet printers and MFPs, which it promotes as an economical alternative to toner-based products not just for commercial printers and central reprographics departments but also for day-to-day office output. The ComColor 7050 MFP (A3, 120 pages per minute), the ComColor 9050 printer (A3, 150ppm) and the A4-only ComColor 3050 MFP (90ppm) have two main selling points: fast print speeds (including no loss of speed when printing on both sides of the page) and very low running costs. These are in the region of 0.4p per B&W page and 1-2p per colour page when printed on normal office or recycled paper. This is significantly cheaper than toner devices: even if print quality of 300 x 600 dpi is not what we have come to expect, it is more than adequate for billings, invoices, internal and training documents, drafts and some marketing material e.g. flyers. Tamal Saha, managing director of Riso UK, does not expect ComColor devices to replace laser MFPs completely, but believes that they do have a role to play as part of a balanced deployment. He said: “A ComColor is not the only machine you should have: but it is the principal machine you should have - you could do 80% of your print on it. Don’t think just because 20% of your output is not suitable for such a device that that’s a good reason not to get one.” This is not the first time Riso has launched a high-speed inkjet printer (not to be confused with its digital duplicators, which are based on different technology and have other selling points). Five years ago, it launched the HC5000 series (and the HC550 series 18 months later) and since then has installed more than 3,000 across Europe. Although the HC5500 series enjoyed some success in the education market, it failed to make a big impression outside this niche. “At the time of its launch there was no financial crisis and people didn’t want lower quality, so we pitched the product into the education market where there were big print volumes, limited budgets and where quality was not such an issue,” Saha said. This time around, he is confident that a greater range of organisations will be appreciative of ComColor’s benefits. “The economic downturn has enabled us to go to commercial organisations
that used to say they wanted better quality and promote the TCO argument and point out that there is an alternative to laser MFPs,” he said. The economic climate is not all that’s changed. The new ComColor series is cheaper, faster, more compact and more user-friendly than its predecessor. It is built like an MFP, with an easy to use, touch-screen control panel and an optional scanner for copying and scan to email. And it can be enhanced with useful user management extras, such as card access control and PaperCut print
management software. With a variable data printing capability, over-size A3 output, 400gsm paper handling, built-in and external Postscript RIPs and full finishing options, the ComColor series is well suited to commercial and CRD print environments. www.riso.co.uk 0208 236 5800

Worth waiting for… It’s been nearly a year since Epson launched the 4900, and we’ve been waiting to get our hands on a demonstration model since viewing its UK debut in Hemel Hempstead most of that time. That shows the popularity of the machine, in the number and variety of professional people interested in testing it, and most likely that many were reluctant to send it back. Martin Christie writes…
T
he 4900 is a smaller, A2 version of the new print technology on Epson’s bigger models, twenty four and forty four inch, and is aimed primarily at the fine art and photographic market for a specialist wanting to upgrade from an existing model, or upsize from the many popular A3 printers available for similar roles. For the latter it represents a big jump in price and size, for although it comes without a stand and is titled as a desktop, you need a pretty substantial desk to support it and allow for its bulk. Weighing in at 115 lbs and needing six square feet of space, this is no lightweight in any respect. Pity the poor photographer who orders one unseen and doesn’t have a couple of sturdy pals around when it gets delivered. Of course, compared to most of the machines in an average digital print shop, this ink jet is small fry. So is it worth finding space for this posh printer in the copy shop line up? The answer could well be yes if you have a gap in the studio and in your target audience. If you don’t have a large format machine yet, then it is certainly worth consideration, not only on quality and price, but because like most Epson printers, it is easy to use and flexible. It may only print up to A2, but that size represents more than half of the average demand and its ability to utilise roll and sheet media is unrivalled. If you already have an existing large format printer - likely to be an A1 or A0 - and are
looking for an upgrade, you might initially think a downsize option is moving backwards, but it could give you state of the art performance at a considerable saving in running costs. If the majority of your bigger printing is for posters, where an older four or six colour rig will suffice, and cheaper media can be purchased, do you need the expense of a ten or twelve colour beast at that size. One of the most important considerations in working out profitability in large format printing is wastage, and manufacturers simulations cannot reflect this because there is no accurate way of factoring in all the variables. Suffice it to say if you can cut down your wastage, you will dramatically improve profit overall. One of the main causes of wastage is changing paper, loading and unloading, where rolls can get damaged, particularly significant when very expensive specialist paper is used. Wastage also comes changing inks, cleaning heads and running any of the self diagnostics that large format printers plunge into at will. They can only perform maintenance by flushing more of their valuable bodily fluids through the heads. The most irritating wastage is binning a large colour print when you have found a banding line caused by a blocked head - these only ever happen at the end of a print, never at the beginning when you can stop it. It’s like the toast landing butter side down. I list these issues, rather than plunge directly into the description of the 4900, to put into context why
I think a specialist printer may have a place in the print shop. A further bonus to having to wait in line behind the professional photographic and art trade to try the printer out, is nine months worth of feed back on various internet forums from actual users. All of the independent feedback is extremely positive. There’s no substitute for experience, which is why we prefer to hang onto our test machines a little longer, or until the owners forget we have them. Unfortunately, such was the demand for the 4900 there was never a chance of that happening. We did however manage to squeeze another week’s usage by being nice ! What that was able to confirm was just how flexible and functional the printer is. Quality is taken as seen. To be fair to other manufacturers, the quality produced by top end inkjet printers now across the range is superb, and I leave it to those who delight in exploring the furthest reaches of colour gamuts to describe how one stretches further into the green or the orange. Suffice it to say matched with quality paper and colour profile, printed results are exceptional and will satisfy all but the dedicated photographer who expects to reproduce silver halide, or the artist who thinks you can mix ink like watercolour paint. Oh yes, they do exist. What is more impressive is that it you put rubbish paper through, with the merest whiff of inkjet coating, it will still produce pretty good results. That has to be an unexpected bonus of the fact that the printer is able to produce a greater colour tonal range. Initially, when inkjet printers first spawned individual cartridges into double figures, I was a little sceptical as whether this was real progress except for a limited high end market. I have been won over as experience shows there are a number of benefits, not just on colour depth, but even on economy. Even by rule of thumb the new printers are more economical on ink, and research suggests perhaps by as much as twenty per cent over early models. And quite simply, producing better prints, more consistently, means less wastage of rejected work. Regardless of apparent colour hue, it is often density that causes issues with inkjet prints in trying to mimic the depth and saturation of traditional photographic prints, both colour and black and white. The 4900 uses three graduations of black simultaneously to improve this simulation. In addition, the new 11 colour Ultrachrome HDR (High Dynamic Range) inks use a new orange and a green, and the individual cartridges hold a generous 200ml each.To adjust for different media, the Epson
SEPTEMBER 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
has both matte and photo black, but can switch from one to another automatically on command, with limited wastage of ink. Built in sensors also automatically check the nozzles and clean the head, as well monitoring and aligning them functions that might previously have been done manually, or on other models, in a lengthy self regulated routine. The new head is the same as used on the latest 7900 and 9900 models. This is an improvement on the previous model, the 4880, where some owner experienced regular nozzle blockages if the machine was not used regularly. Users appear to report few blockage problems with the new model. All inkjet printers will suffer nozzle blockages at some time or other, it’s the nature of the beast. Unlike other manufacturers, Epson do not heat any part of the the ink to improve flow, but their heads, as a result, tend to be more reliable in the long run. Canon have additional jets in their large format printer heads, but when enough of them are blocked, it’s game over, get a new head. Hp run single colour heads so they can be replaced individually when they fail. Epson has one solid multi jet item which relies on the ink flushing through it to clean it. This may be proportionally more expensive on ink in the short term but may be cheaper than new heads in the long term. Even more than this, the most functional feature, or features, of the 4900 is media capacity. It can not only handle roll and sheet paper, but it can do so all at the same time, and switch automatically, a trick that makes it quite unique. As well as an A2 size paper cassette with a large capacity, it can take individual sheet feed of card or board up to 1.5mm. This is by far one of the most significant selling points for a digital print shop. It may not immediately appear obvious, but when customer demand may require four or five different paper options in one day, convenience in loading is vital. Not only is roll paper often temperamental in feeding, but sheet is sometimes virtually impossible despite what manufacturers may claim, leading to lost time and frustration. Not so with the Epson. It’s actually a pleasure to change media when necessary, something I never thought I would suggest. It all runs so smoothly you actually stand back waiting for a warning light to blink or a beeper to
v i v i d.
beep, but nothing does. Even if you should happen to select the wrong paper option in the print dialogue box it will calmly ask you to correct your mistake at the push of a button. If you do happen to encounter any problems there’s even a video you can watch on the internet. I don’t think I have seen a similar how-to doit broadcast from rival manufacturers. If they do exist they will certainly have been edited for swearing and violence ! This functionality not only saves time, but frayed nerves and the odd sheet of paper screwed up and thrown against the wall, and the flexibility of having, for example, photo paper in the cassette and matte paper on the 17 inch roll all available in an instant makes for true instant print on demand. In addition there are two more feeds for heavier sheet media, or just a one-off print, including Epson’s own photoboard, which is extremely tough and water resistant. We had the opportunity to try a variety of different media brands during the test, not just those supplied by the manufacturer, and quality reflected the price of the media. Obviously top class products produced the best results, and best matched the colour profiles supplied with the Epson software. The Epson 4900 is priced at £2295. It does have an optional Spectrometer, but this does add another thousand pounds to the price, as well as a considerable amount to the overall bulk as in sits on top of the front cassette. This is likely to be an unnecessary addition because if you are heavily into ICC profiling and proof printing you are likely to have your own X-rite or similar device already in use. It is something that Epson feel the need to offer, however, to keep in line with the competition. A less glamorous but integral feature is a high performance rotary cutter, as used on Epson’s bigger models, which will slice through heavy weight material with ease. If you’ve had to battle with straggling threads of uncut canvas, or clean dust caused by badly shredded textured paper, you’ll appreciate that even this small piece of progress is a welcome one. All in all, some major improvements and some minor improvements, amounting to a very impressive package for the professional printer. If your customer has any issues with the output of this machine, nothing will ever satisfy them.

Ricoh launches 100 per cent sustainable ‘eco-board’ in London
Ricoh UK has unveiled Europe’s first ‘eco-board’, a billboard powered 100 per cent by wind and solar power. The Ricoh eco-board is the first of its kind in Europe in having dual natural sources of power so that it illuminates only when sufficient power is collected, demonstrating by example the company’s long term commitment to sustainable business. “Our ethos is to go beyond simply meeting regulatory requirements relating to sustainability by proactively promoting environmentally responsible practices in our own business and for our customers. The launch of the Ricoh eco-board takes us one step further by reminding wider public audiences to act in a sustainable way and think beyond the obvious when it comes to protecting natural resources,” said Phil Keoghan, CEO of Ricoh UK. “At Ricoh, we have been committed to reducing our company’s carbon footprint for decades, already achieving zero waste to landfill at major production sites back in 2001. We are also focused on encouraging our supply chain to adopt sustainable business models that can help protect the environment whilst improving productivity and profits.” The Ricoh eco-board is located on the M4 motorway, which runs from London to London Heathrow airport. The eco-board is powered by 96 solar panels and five individual wind turbines and forms a key part of Ricoh’s overall commitment to raising environmental awareness in the region. People journeying into the heart of London will pass the eco-board which carries Ricoh’s Managed Document Services’ message – the company’s sustainable approach to streamlining business processes and document workflows. The concept for the board was transformed into reality by integrated outdoor services provider Rainmaker, and the site was agreed as part of a five year contract with media owner Outdoor Plus. The board is located in the London Borough of Hounslow. To find out more about Ricoh’s eco-boards: visit www.ricoh-eco.com

attended the regional BITC Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner that took place at Leeds United Football Club Victoria said: “Duraweld believes that protection of our ecosystem and environmentally responsible business practices are essential for sustaining the future of the company and the quality of life for generations to come. Finance available for ‘Green’ equipment New analysis from the Carbon Trust and Siemens has shown that the estimated market for energy efficient equipment finance over the next three years in the manufacturing sector is £4.6bn. However, manufacturers remain cautious about investing in equipment upgrades in a slowly recovering economy. In order to make such investment affordable, the Carbon Trust and Siemens have launched a new scheme to provide UK manufacturers with green equipment finance. This major new scheme will boost green growth and unlock business investment in the low carbon economy – key to economic recovery. Enabling investment in such technologies as low energy lighting, energy efficient motors, low carbon air conditioning or biomass heating, the new dedicated green finance scheme is a first and will enable manufacturing businesses to invest in equipment which not only saves energy costs, but also often helps improve productivity. Any business is able to apply for new green growth finance from the scheme, which is designed to match monthly payments with the equivalent savings from lower energy consumption. The Carbon Trust will apply its expertise in carbon saving from energy efficient technologies to provide a reliable and trusted assessment of the carbon, energy and cost savings of any application for finance. Siemens Financial Services Ltd. in the UK (SFS UK) provides the financial backing and manages the provision of funding. Myles McCarthy, General Manager of Carbon Trust Implementation Services, commented: “The introductory few weeks of the new scheme have shown that there is a huge desire amongst British business to invest in energy efficient equipment. Up to now, a missing ingredient has been access to affordable finance to enable business to make those green investments. This new major finance facility – which matches monthly payments to real monthly energy cost savings - will improve business competitiveness, cut carbon and boost the green growth.” James Gearey, CEO from Siemens Financial Services Ltd. commented: “We are delighted to be working with the Carbon Trust, their values very much match our own. Our extensive experience of asset financing and lending to UK businesses and the public sector, combined with our ready access to funding means we are well placed to support the scheme and deliver the associated benefits to its future customers.” Any business wishing to apply to the scheme for energy efficient equipment finance, or any equipment supplier wishing to offer the scheme to its customers, should visit: www.energyefficiencyfinancing.co.uk

‘Floating Photo’ helium balloon printing After 11 years of intense R&D, a £1.5m investment, extensive trials and strategic market research, Magic International has launched Floato™ Photo-Balloon, as an exclusive and ultra high quality personalised helium foil balloon printing service. The Floato has quickly attracted interest from major online gift retailers and the company expects to announce its commercial partners shortly. The Floato was invented by Philip Lang, CEO of Magic International. Lang has a background in engineering and is hugely inventive and energetic. He has achieved granted patents worldwide for a 24-inch balloon with a flexible waterproof coating. Its unique and patented packaging allows the Floato to be fed easily through a range of Epson inkjet printers. As a result, quality images and text can be printed in full colour in a matter of minutes. “Epson printers produce stunning, photo quality results which puts this photo gift into a quality bracket all of its own, which is a major factor in its appeal and success,” says Lang. “Epson has also provided tremendous support over the past three years helping us with the development of various Floato components.” He has linked up with specialist distributor Citipost who is providing a simple online and highly efficient, print on demand production and fulfilment service. Orders are placed online where images are uploaded, a message added and one of five styles selected. Orders are received at Citipost’s main London depot and printed onsite by trained staff with a range of Epson Stylus Pro 3880, 4880, 4900 and 7890

inkjet printers using the Epson UltraChrome K3 Vivid Magenta or UltraChrome HDR ink set. The Floato is inflated with helium, gift boxed with ribbon and weight, and despatched on the same day. Lang has tested the Floato service thoroughly: “We sold 10,000 for the Royal Wedding and, in an on line trial for Father’s Day, up to 500 personalised balloons were sold per day, clearly demonstrating the appeal of such a quality personalised gift.” To provide balloon customers with a more permanent memento, Lang has also added a super high quality framed photo canvas print to his product range, which again features unique design elements. “Our aim is to continuously expand and develop our range of innovative photo gifts delivering outstanding quality at exceptional prices. However, it’s not simply a matter of producing quality products. We have now been able to put a highly efficient production and fulfilment workflow in place which ensures customers will have the very best experience and retailers are able to offer a top quality range of photo-gifts at affordable prices. “ www.epson.co.uk OR CONTACT Philip Lang 0208 905 5482, philipmagic@ me.com
Neschen has launched what it claims is its best anti-graffiti film yet. Called solvoclear easy protect, it is a low-priced, general purpose anti-graffiti film which is able to retain its glossy appearance even after having been surface cleaned several times. solvoclear easy protect is ideally suited for indoor and outdoor use with traditional photo prints, inkjet and digital print media including paper, polyester and vinyl. It is manufactured from OPP (oriented polypropylene), an environmentally-friendly material composed of only carbon and hydrogen, with a high gloss finish. It has a siliconised white backing paper and a clear solvent acrylic adhesive on one side and delivers high UV protection. Sarah Janes, managing director of Neschen UK, says “This new protective film is easy to handle and extremely well priced but what sets it head and shoulders above anything else manufactured so far is that it is highly resistant to a large number of detergents and solvents and — importantly — stays glossy after cleaning after cleaning. It does not become matt as other films do.” Correctly applied, Neschen’s solvoclear easy protect has an expected life span of several years. lANcAShIRe based D&L Designs Limited has just taken delivery of £60k worth of new equipment to help them expand their design business into print production. Most of the new finishing kit was supplied and installed by local specialist The Finishing Point in Warrington and includes a Matrix laminator, IDEAL 5221 guillotine and Duplo DC-615 cutter-creaser. Joint Directors Darral Pinch and Laraine Thompson-Pinch started the company 10 years ago as a dedicated creative design house for publishers in the greetings card industry. In 2008 the company expanded into print and began offering personalised cards and invitations over the internet. Over the past three years, that business has experienced steady growth to the point where D&L’s existing print and finishing equipment was holding the company back. As Laraine explains, “We knew our designs were good because we’ve been selling them to the big publishers for a long time so we decided to take it a step further and get into print too. We focused on short run, personalised products – greetings cards, invitations etc. but the demand has been so strong we’ve been struggling to keep up.” D&L had been finishing most of their products by hand but the DC-615 has changed all that. Darral commented, “The Duplo cutter creaser is so much faster that we’ve now got more time to do other things. To finish a typical job was taking 25 minutes but now it takes less than five. Not only that, the machine can cut and crease the cards completely unsupervised and the accuracy is unbelievable.” The DC-615 is a pre-programmble digital finisher that cuts and creases SRA3 sheets down to finished products. According to the literature, it can produce 1200 greetings cards or 6000 business cards per hour with no manual intervention. Another benefit for D&L has been the ability to work with more rigid substrates. In the past the company was restricted to lighter stocks because the equipment couldn’t cope with anything heavy. Now thanks to the new printer and DC-615, they can produce cards on 350gsm which Laraine believes adds real value to their products, “There is no doubt about it, people want thicker paper, it feels nicer and makes the product a whole lot more marketable”. Commenting on the service they received from The Finishing Point, Darral concluded, “we had been in contact with a number of suppliers during the procurement but the expertise, responsiveness and advice from TFP was a class apart. The benefit of doing business with a dealer is they have access to a greater selection of products than going direct to a manufacturer so we’ve been able to kit out our whole premises in one go. The after sales customer service is excellent and you are not left feeling abandoned.” As for the future, D&L’s next big project is a website upgrade before hitting the market with an enhanced offering covering design and its new range of print products. in knowing what is required to produce the best quality products to our customers. We give you a level of service that all larger personalised printing product companies fail to do! For more information: www.thefinishingpoint.co.uk and www.duplouk.co.uk

Square Testicles This is a joke that is supposed to bring you luck… balls, or what? An elderly woman walked into the Royal Bank of Canada one morning with a purse full of money. She wanted to open a savings account and insisted on talking to the president of the Bank because, she said, she had a lot of money. After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderly woman to the president’s office. The president of the Bank asked her how much she wanted to deposit. She placed her purse on his desk and replied, ‘$165,000’. The president was curious and asked her how she had been able to save so much money. The elderly woman replied that she made bets. The president was surprised and asked, ‘What kind of bets?’ The elderly woman replied, ‘Well, I bet you $25,000 that your testicles are square.’ The president started to laugh and told the woman that it was impossible to win a bet like that. The woman never batted an eye. She just looked at the president and said, ‘Would you like to take my bet?’ ‘Certainly’, replied the president. ‘I bet you $25,000 that my testicles are not square.’ ‘Done’, the elderly woman answered. ‘But given the amount of money involved, if you don’t mind I would like to come back at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning with my lawyer as a witness.’ ‘No problem’, said the president of the Bank confidently. That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of the mirror examining his testicles, turning them this way and that, checking them over again and again until he was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself that there was no way he could lose the bet. The next morning at exactly 10 o’clock the elderly woman arrived at the president’s office with her lawyer
Doctor: I’m sorry to have to tell you that you may have rabies, and it could prove fatal.
and acknowledged the $25,000 bet made the day before that the president’s testicles were square. The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before. Then the elderly woman asked him to drop his pants etc. so that she and her lawyer could see clearly. The president was happy to oblige. The elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touch them. ‘Of course’, said the president. ‘Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100% sure.’ The elderly woman did so with a little smile. Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer was banging his head against the wall. He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that and she replied, ‘Oh, it’s probably because I bet him $100,000 that around 10 o’clock in the morning I would be holding the balls of the President of the Royal Bank of Canada!’
BIG MAC, Little Brain I went to McDonalds. I looked at the menu and saw that you could have an order of 6,9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets. I asked for a half-dozen nuggets. ‘We don’t have a half-dozen nuggets,’ said the teenager at the counter. ‘ You don’t?’ I replied. ‘We only have six, nine or twelve,’ was the reply. ‘So I can’t order a half-dozen nuggets but I can order six?’ ‘That’s right.’ so I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets.
On-line shopping A lady at work was seen putting a credit card into her floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly. When inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was shopping on the internet and they asked for a credit card number, so she’s using the ATM ‘thingy’.
Patient: Well, doctor, please give me pencil and paper.
Different Sex A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a flyswatter. ‘What are you doing?’ She asked. ‘Hunting flies’ He responded. ‘Oh! Have you killed any?’ She asked. ‘Yep, 3 males, 2 Females’, he replied. Intrigued, she asked. ‘How can you tell?’ ‘3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone’
Key Staff I recently saw a distraught young lady beside her car weeping. ‘Do you need some help?’ I asked. She replied, ‘I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocker. Now I can’t get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenient store) would have a battery to fit this?’ ‘Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm too?’ I asked. ‘No, just this remote thingy,’ she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. I took the key and manually unlocked the door.
Copy Mad Several years ago, we had an intern who was none too swift. One day he was typing and turned to a secretary and said, ‘I’m almost out of typing paper. What do I do?’ ‘Just use copier machine paper,’ the secretary told him. With that, the intern took his last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five ‘blank’ copies.
Auto Pilot I was in a car dealership a while ago, when a large motor home was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole thing generally looked like an extra in ‘Twister’. I asked the manager what had happened. He told me that the driver had set the ‘cruise control’ and then went in the back to make a sandwich.
Doctor: To make your will?
Quick Copy I saw this bloke chatting up a cheetah, I thought ‘he’s trying to pull a fast one’. So I said to this train driver ‘I want to go to Paris’. He said ‘Eurostar?’ I said ‘I’ve been on telly but I’m no Dean Martin’. So I said to the Gym instructor ‘Can you teach me to do the splits?’. He said ‘How flexible are you?’ I said ‘I can’t make Tuesdays’. So I was having dinner with Garry Kasparov and there was a check tablecloth. It took him two hours to pass me the salt. He said ‘You remind me of a pepper-pot’, I said ‘I’ll take that as a condiment’. Do you know I’ve got a friend who’s fallen in love with two school bags: He’s bisatchel. But I’ll tell you what I love doing more than anything: trying to pack myself in a small suitcase. I can hardly contain myself. Now you know those trick candles that you blow out and a couple of seconds later they come alight again, well the other day there was a fire at the factory that makes them.
Repeat Order A customer sent an order to his printer for a large amount of brochures totaling a great deal of money. The printer noticed that the previous bill hadn’t yet been paid, so he asked his collections manager to leave a voice-mail for them saying, “We can’t deliver your new order until you pay for the last one.” The next day the collections manager received the returned phone call, “Please cancel the order. We can’t wait that long.”
A stitch in time This police officer sees an old lady driving and knitting at the same time so after driving next to her for a while he yells to her, “PULLOVER”. She replies, “No a pair of socks”.
Patient: No, to make a list of people I want to bite.
