ELCOME TO THE Sheffield and Rotherham Golden Years Roadshow. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors at the event. A special ‘thank you’ is reserved for our sponsors Guiness Care Support who have worked very hard behind the scenes to help make the day fun, entertaining and hopefully a big success. Above all we have tried to make the event ‘local and community based’, while still being fun and informative.

To the exhibitors ‘thank you’ for coming along to the event and being prepared to try something new which is growing and developing. Should you have any opinions or new ideas to help improve the road shows, please feel free to email us at info@goldenyearsroadshow.co.uk with your comments. Equally should you wish to be involved with future events also drop us a line at the same email address. The team would love to speak to you. To the visitors, a great big ‘thank you’ as without you this would not be possible. We hope that you will be able to take something away from today’s event whether it is a new found love for food or even a better understanding of what you need to do to improve your finances. Be sure to try the treasure hunt and the quiz zone. Some of you may even be going home with prizes. Blast from the Past, the Fashion Show and Elvis are features that are not to be missed. We would also like to say a ‘thank you’ to all the exhibitors who have tried to raise much needed funds for the charity at the exhibition. They have been the inspiration for this event, and we do hope that the event has managed to raise a nice amount of funds for them. Please make sure you spin the roulette wheel before you go home as all proceeds go to the Weston Park Hospital. And a final ‘thank you’ to the venue team who have worked tirelessly to make this event the success we hope it will be.

POWER OF ATTORNEY

Setting up a Power of Attorney is essential to protect your loved ones

continue living in your own home or if it would be agreeable for you to go into residential care. This Power of Attorney also comes with a DNR (do not resuscitate) clause if you wish to give this authority to your attorneys, should the need arise.

Are you seeing more and more people wanting to give someone else LPA over their financial affairs?

A

S LIFE EXPECTANCIES increase year on year the need to forward plan for problems that could arise in old age has never been more important. It is simply not enough today to make your will and think you have everything covered. If you get to the stage where you can no longer make your own decisions then often it is to late- that’s why increasing numbers of people are now taking steps to obtain a Lasting Power of Attorney. But what does this process involve and when should you start thinking about it? We asked legal expert John Martin, Director of Estate Planning Services at Housley, Church and Brayne for a rundown on what taking this important step means.

What do we mean by Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? Can you explain it?

Whether you are young or old, have a history of dementia or illness or simply want to ensure your loved ones have the ability to make decisions about your care and manage your finances when you have temporarily or permanently lost capacity – you must have a Lasting Power of Attorney. In 2007 the Office of the Public Guardian instigated the process that enables your friends or family to register their interest to act as your legal guardian (attorney). Your attorneys, once registered, can have undisputed access to your bank/ building society accounts, savings investments and sell your home in order to pay for your care. This will

enable them to manage your dayto-day living expenses and help you maintain a normal lifestyle.

Can you explain the process involved in getting LPA?

The process is quite straightforward. You need to decide on one, two or three attorneys (a maximum of four). Then instruct a professional to produce the paperwork that will need to be signed by all persons mentioned in the document. Once the document has been signed and witnessed then it should be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Just like a will, once a LPA has been registered it should then be kept in a safe place, ready to be presented to any organisation that you need to contact to act on that person’s behalf.

There are two type of LPA, can you take us through them?

Yes. There is property and finance and also health and welfare. For property and finance the Power of Attorney will allow your attorneys to deal with your day-today correspondence, obtain money from your accounts, collect and claim benefits, pay bills, rent or sell your home. Health and Welfare allows you to appoint attorneys, make decisions about your day to day care, medical treatment and whether you should

3rd October 2014 • GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW

According to the Office of the Public Guardian, which registers all Powers of Attorney, because we are living longer the demand for these important legal documents is growing at a fast pace. The organisation says it has now reached one million people having made Powers of Attorney. At present it is estimated that, in the UK there are about 300,000 people making these every year. This could be as a result of 80,000 in the UK currently suffering from dementia and by 2021 there could be over one million.

What kind of clients do you deal with? Who would your services be useful to?

Everyone should have this important legal document, we could all be involved in an accident, or an injury at work or home or become incapacitated when illness strikes.

What can happen if this isn’t looked into – can you give an example of some of the pitfalls of not sorting this out early enough? I have a client whose family could not even redirect their mother’s post at the post office, when they went into respite care, without a Power of Attorney. Should a Power of Attorney not be in place and incapacity occurs, you will need to make an application from the Court of Protection for an order to be made to enable someone to act on that person’s behalf and administer their affairs. Making an application is a costly, time consuming and stressful process. RELATIONSHIPS IN RETIREMENT

Can your relationship survive retirement? Think about your relationship after retirement and how do you see it? Languorous breakfasts together in the conservatory? Couples-only cruises? Holding hands on long walks along the promenade? In reality, retirement can put a lot of stress on even the most secure of relationships, after years spending just a few hours together a week you’re suddenly plunged in to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the same person. So how do you ensure your relationship survives retirement? PREPARE FOR SUCCESS

Take time BEFORE you retire to evaluate your relationship and how you intend to make the most of it when you have more time together. Talk about what you imagine your life will be like and to discuss the places where your fantasies don’t match. Make a plan which both of you are happy with — where will you holiday? Will you move house? What hobbies will you enjoy together and apart?

MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Be aware that retirement won’t be perfect every step of the way. Spending all this time together will result in some disagreements so don’t expect a bed of roses, excitement every day or constant romance. Appreciate what you have in your stable relationship and the time you have together in retirement.

SHARE YOUR HOBBIES

Supposing your husband loves golf, or your wife is a gardener extraordinaire. Spend time appreciating your other half’s passions, whether you enjoy them or not. A relationship is all about give and take and you never know, you may discover a skill for putting or a love of roses yourself.

BUT NOT ALL OF THEM

In every relationship, from the fledgling romance to the long-standing love, couples need space from each other. Make time just for you and allow your partner to spend time apart as well. This may involve taking solo holidays, spending time with friends or taking a class. But if it just means taking a relaxing bubble bath a couple of times a week or reading a book in the study, that’s good too.

STAY POSITIVE

When you and your partner find yourself in each other’s company day in, day out you’ll undoubtedly come across problems. But even if hidden resentments bubble to the surface, you disagree on how to spend (or save) your nest egg or you just begin to get under each other’s feet, keep a positive outlook, remember why you looked forward to this time and enjoy it as best you can.

IF IN DOUBT ASK FOR HELP

It might be as simple as chatting with a friend or you might choose to contact a relationship counsellor but the important thing is that you know there’s no shame in admitting there’s something not right in your marriage. Retirement can be more stressful than any of us expect but ask for help and take advice and it can be just as wonderful as you hoped.

Featuring a purpose-built set, it is used to educate visitors about safety and citizenship with the ultimate aim of reducing crime and improving quality of life. over 106,000 visitors to the centre, although South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire Service and the Safer Roads Partnership are the main partners, it has the support of a multitude of third sector organisations, including the NHS, Victim Support, Trading Standards, British Red Cross to name just a few. Working together, we offer vulnerable communities from South Yorkshire events that focus on issues including: Road and fire safety, doorstep crime, rogue traders, fraud and scams, mobility scooter safety, financial abuse, falls and fractures, drugs and alcohol. I am passionate about helping vulnerable people and my background as a crime reduction officer helps me, with support from other staff and partners develop and run events aimed predominantly for those ages 50+. I have a keen interest in burglary, especially around distraction burglary and doorstep related crime. I suppose this stems from an incident that occurred a 3rd October 2014 • GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW

Scooter Safe has been designed to address safety concerns around the use of electrically powered mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs. The UK has over 500,000 scooter users and the European Capital of mobility scooter use. The event is designed to run for approx 2 hours and aims to explain the lawful requirements and responsibilities of scooter and powered wheel chair users, increase the road safety awareness of users and develop manoeuvrability and observation skills. Scooter Safe is delivered at the unique Lifewise Centre or as an outreach session within local communities subject to a suitable venue such a community centres, housing association, church halls etc. In the last six years within South Yorkshire, there have been over 64 collisions involving mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs and in the last three months we have seen another four incidents, one resulting in serious injury and another where a 86 yr old man was found travelling on the M18 motorway. Members of the public who have no previous driving experience can go out and purchase a scooter, do not require a licence, insurance, training, and they may have no previous driving experience at all. You can be registered blind and still purchase a scooter, so it is clear from statistics in South Yorkshire alone that something needs to be done regarding the use of mobility scooters.

few years ago in my role as a Crime Reduction Officer. I was tasked with visiting a person in Sheffield who had become a victim of what we call a distraction burglary or a doorstep crime. Alice was 92yrs old, when I called, Alice was weeping and shaking uncontrollably, worried this man may return to her home. Alice not only had some money stolen but also her deceased husband’s wedding ring, something she had treasured as they had been married over 50 years. This crime had a massive impact on me and from that day I was determined to do all I can to raise peoples awareness of con men and rogue traders. I will be delivering seminars today covering the subjects mention above, please come and listen to the advice and information I will be providing. I can guarantee you will learn something and it may even keep you, family, friends and your neighbours safe. 9

HEALTH

Checking for Bowel Cancer Bowel cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers in the UK. It affects more than one in 20 people and kills more than 16,000 each year, yet it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer if detected early.

T

HE NHS BOWEL Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men and women aged 60 to 74 and registered with a GP. People over 75 can request a screening kit by calling 0800 707 60 60. People who take part in the programme will be sent a simple to use home test kit with full instructions. The test involves collecting a small sample from three separate bowel motions and returning the kit to the laboratory in a specially designed pre paid envelope. The samples will be analysed and results will be provided within two weeks. Most people screened will have a normal result. People who have an abnormal result will be invited to an appointment with a specialist screening nurse to discuss having further investigations. Around 40% of people with an abnormal screening result will be found to have polyps (small clumps of abnormal cells which may develop into cancer), which can be removed easily. Only about 10% of people requiring further investigation will have cancer. Often this is at an early stage when it can be much more easily and successfully treated. For more information on the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme please freephone 0800 707 60 60 or visit the website www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/bowel/

GOLDEN AGE

The top ten benefits of a golden age

Fifties are the new golden age

1. Being in relatively good health 2. Having more time to enjoy life 3. Being In a relatively good financial position 4. Having a relationship that is stronger than ever 5. Being comfortable with your body 6. Happiness with life achievements so far 7. The mortgage being paid off 8. Knowing what you want from life 9. Having children who are happy and content with their lives 10. Being able to take lots of holidays.

If you’ve hit 45 and are feeling down in the dumps, don’t despair — the good times are on their way.

O

K, SO YOUR face has a few extra lines and there are a couple of surplus inches around your waist, but new research has shown that we are actually getting happier as we get older. A study of 10,000 people across the UK has revealed that our mental satisfaction increases after middle age, despite a drop in our physical quality of life. Dr Saverio Stranges, who led the research at Warwick University, said: “It’s obvious that people’s physical quality of life deteriorates as they age, but what is interesting is that their mental well-being doesn’t deteriorate – in fact it increases. He said, ”We suggest that this could be due to better coping abilities, an interpretation supported by previous research showing older people tend to have internal mechanisms to deal better with hardship or negative circumstances than those who are younger. ”It could also be due to a lowering of expectations from life, with older people less likely to put pressure on themselves in the personal and professional spheres. ”The study analysed lifestyle and health patterns to measure quality of life using eight different factors including perception of general health, pain, social functioning and mental health. It also looked at being overweight, and found that people with a BMI of more than 30 showed a similar mental quality of life level to those considered to be a healthy weight. The effect of sleep on quality of life also formed part of the study and discovered that people who spend between six and eight hours in bed have better physical and mental health scores than those who slept fewer than six or more than eight hours a night. The findings echo those of a survey of more than 1,500 people aged 50 and over by insurance company Engage Mutual.

Being in a strong relationship, having paid off the mortgage and the children being happy and independent are key to a golden age in your fifties with 44% of those questioned saying they are more content with their lives than ever before. With increased life expectancy, being 50 is considered to be relatively young and those who have managed to stay healthy and been able to plan their finances may start to feel the benefit with more cash to spend on holidays and hobbies, rather than working just to pay the mortgage. Many parents reported a sense of relief when their children settled down with 52% saying they enjoy having more time on their hands, and more than a fifth enjoying a great social life and good circle of friends. Another big bonus is that the things we worried about in our twenties and thirties no longer seem so important, with 85% of over 50s admitting that they have long ceased to care about relatively trivial and transient issues. And over a third say they no longer worry about whether they are good looking or thin. n

Do something amazing!

Improve someone’s life and get paid for doing it We have many opportunities for you, to help vulnerable adults gain a better life For example, you could: • Spend a few hours with them, out and about, helping them enjoy their social life, e.g. by going to the cinema. • Look after them, for a few hours a week, whilst their normal carer takes a break. • Provide short term care support in their home. • Provide short, medium or long term care support in your own home.

And here are a couple of your rewards: • The satisfaction of making someone’s life a whole lot better. • A financial allowance. If you have at least 12 hours a week to spare and would like to find out more: Call: (0114) 273 5185 Email: adult.placement@ sheffield.gov.uk Or go to: www.sheffield.gov.uk/ caresupport/carers/adult-placement/become-carer.html
