APRIL 2009
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the April edition of Inside Shoreham. Spring is finally here. It is such a positive time of the year. It is a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born as well as a chance to look at things afresh. It is one of the seasons that adds bounce to ones step, a smile to ones lips and thoughts with happy endings. This month we have some great articles. We have for instance Pat Bennett who was the cover girl for Woolworths 1954 — fabulous story to follow on from Judy Uptons last two Articles. We also have another
local article from Shoreham’s Police Community Support Officers which is well worth reading. These are just two of the many articles in this month’s issue. You will find all the others listed below. On that note, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and please do keep sending us your local articles. We will make every effort to publish them. Additionally, last but not least, your continued support of the magazine and the local business is highly appreciated! So until May, happy reading. Angela

Need odd jobs doing? him in good stead with his customers. In addition to that, he makes a point of offering a flexible and reliable service at very competitive rates. Andy says, “It’s great to be able to offer a service that really does make a difference to people — I enjoy doing the sort of jobs that a lot of people don’t like or just don’t have time for.” And Andy’s customers are happy too, describing him as 'honest, friendly and hardworking.' So if you’ve got any jobs that need sorting out, why not give Andy a call on 07812 371776 and get them done!

e ALL HAVe those little jobs around the house that are not quite big enough to get a builder in for but that you can’t quite manage to get done yourself — or maybe just don’t want to do yourself! Odd Job Man Andy Ryan can do them for you. Andy has spent his working life in the construction industry, working his way up to the position of Contract Manager for a London-based construction company. He enjoyed his work but it came with a long commute and a lot of hours on the road. Andy, who lives in Shoreham-by-Sea, says “I really wanted to work locally so I could spend more time with the family, and I also wanted to get back to doing something that was more hands-on and more satisfying.” So Andy decided to set up his own local business offering help with the sort of jobs that we all put off! Andy can help you with anything from clearing your garden to clearing your gutters, putting up a new shed to putting up your flatpack furniture, small removals to even collecting your Freecycle or Friday-Ad bargain for you. With Spring upon us, what better time to get those half done DIY projects that we intend to finish at some stage ‘but never get around to it’. Maybe the walls have been prepared but you haven’t got around to painting them. Maybe you’ve started clearing the garden but haven’t had the chance to finish the job and get of the waste. “I’m more than happy to finish work that has started off as a DIY project”, says Andy. “I know what its like — you start off with the best of intentions and just don’t have the time to finish the project — I’m more than happy to help!” Andy’s experience in the construction industry has given him a good set of very practical skills that stand

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Mortgages — frequently asked questions I
n ALL of our professions, most of us will find reoccurring issues. In the mortgage world, there are currently a few areas which many people ask about. Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions.
Portable mortgages Many people are looking to buy at the moment, or to downsize to a smaller property. Remember, even if your loan is portable, if you move house the lender will look at your situation as if you are a new borrower. This means that even if you are taking a smaller mortgage, the lender will look at your income and outgoings, and will apply the current lending criteria. Many people are surprised that this happens, but a portable mortgage just means that you take the terms of your mortgage across to the new property, i.e. the rate and the penalties. It does not mean that you can move around without your lender reassessing your situation. Remember also that lending criteria has tightened, so even though you fitted a couple of years ago, this does not necessarily mean that your lender will lend again in the current climate – my advice is to get some independent advice before you start looking for a new property. Even if your lender cannot help, there may be other lenders who can. For those who can port, it may be a great option especially if you are with a lender who has a low standard variable rate, remember most don’t offer these to new borrowers, but if you are already with a lender you may be able to take the low rate with you — just a thought.
taking a new mortgage the tracker rates should be looked at with caution. Bear in mind that they track the Bank of England base rate, which is currently 0.5%, the lowest it has ever been. Your rate might look competitive now, but bear in mind what will happen when the Bank base rate increases to normal levels, you could find yourself paying a very high rate indeed. You should seriously consider one of the very competitive fixed rate deals which are available at the moment. Rates are still creeping down, and it is an excellent time to find yourself a deal which is low now, and also for the next few years. If you would like advice on the above issues, or any other mortgage or financial related matter, please call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and independent financial advice.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
Self Certification mortgages A couple of years ago there were many lenders offering self cert mortgages, meaning that you did not have to provide proof of income. The rates were competitive and the lenders very accommodating. Now, there are precious few deals around, those that are available have high rates and fees, not very attractive. So, if you are unable to prove your income, you may find things difficult. On the plus side, some lenders are happy to take various types of income into consideration, for example Working Tax Credit and even Child Tax Credits. This can assist some people in achieving the loan amount they require. If you are unsure that you can get a mortgage, it is best to seek some advice before you start to look.
Tracker versus fixed rates If you are looking for a new tracker rate, think again. You could possibly port an existing rate to a new property, but if you are

Unique feet V
IsITInG A fRIenD in hospital one evening he said “Shhh, listen to those footsteps” as the heels clunked down the corridor. “I bet thats nurse Lynn”, he said, and he was right. He’d been there long enough to recognise the sound of a persons footsteps! Is he unique? Well, surprisingly, no. Even Shakespeare knew about such things: “High’st Queen of state, Great Juno comes; I know her by her gait (The Tempest Act 4 scene 1, Ceres observes) Gait is the manner of how we walk. How we walk is unique to each of us just as each of our individual feet are unique, which is more than can be said of our hands! It is this uniqueness of our individual feet that means out of two people, whose feet appear equally flat, one can have hard skin, the other person not. The person with hard skin might be pain free but the one with baby smooth feet can be in pain in the foot and leg muscles. Hard skin generally results from things such as friction and sheer stress to the skin of the feet and tissues beneath it. Maybe our shoes pinch the skin, or they cause us to put more pressure on one area, like the ball of the foot. Callous may form or we 12 INSIDE 0409.indd 12
might get a deep painful ache in there instead. Painful feet and legs usually come from the muscles having to work too hard, perhaps from prolonged standing or even from a simple walk - but our foot and leg muscles seem no longer able to take the strain. One sign that our feet are working harder can even be that walking seems such labourious work. There is no pleasure in it. Indeed, some children and adults are put off sport simply because running or walking is so tiring and hard, partly because their feet are not working efficiently for them! It might surprise people to hear that a research study in January this year suggested that “Approximately one quarter” of a population are “affected by foot pain at any given time.”
These kind of situations can often be helped. The role of a Podiatrist includes working out how to help you make the right changes, or, what best treatment to have that makes being mobile easier and more pleasant. It might be removing of the hard skin, deep massage to the foot muscles and ligaments to get them working more normally. It might mean using special inserts which take some of the strain. There again, the Podiatrist and Physiotherapist, Osteopath or, Chiropractor may work together to improve things. Unique things are precious and, strange as it may seem, that means your unique feet as well! Just as you would care for a unique object, give your unique feet some attention today and, if need be, let the Podiatrist check them out as well. At Manor Farm House we can bring lots of skills together to help support the unique you.

The Rotary Youthspeak competition
T
HIs ComPeTITIon, WHICH has been running for well over 30 years, organised by the Rotary Clubs and Districts of the UK, is a knockout competition between schools, all of which have the chance to enter teams. There are two group competitions, Intermediate for 11 to 13 year olds and Senior for 14 to 17 year olds. The opening competitions are run by local Rotary clubs with their own local schools being invited to take part, and in this area, it is the Shoreham & Southwick Club that sends out the invitations for this opening round which usually takes place in November. So far, Shoreham & Southwick have only run a Senior competition, but are hoping to be able to bring in an Intermediate competition some time in the near future Invitations are sent to many schools and sadly, only a small number of those invited, take up the offer. The local competition winning team goes on to an area final from which the winners and runners-up go to a district final and eventually, winners will spar against each other in a National final to hopefully become Rotary International
14 INSIDE 0409.indd 14
GB & Ireland Champions Now, what is it all about! Each team has three members, a Chairman, a main Speaker and a “Vote of thanks” person. The subject of the presentation is chosen by the team and will be presented by the Speaker after opening remarks and introductions from the Chairman. The speaker is then tested by a chosen member of the audience to answer a question and the Chairmen then asks for the vote of thanks from the “VOT” member. After each school team has performed, three erudite adjudicators retire to discuss the performances of the teams and select the winner to go forward to the next stage. Prizes are given to ALL participants, with extra prizes for the best Speaker, the best Chairman and the best vote of thanks and of course, the winning team. I stress to add – there are NO losers and usually the contests are very close and give adjudicators a tough time! This competition is of immense value to our young men and women, helping to prepare them for the future
in a world where the ability to present their views, to learn how to cope with questions and have confidence to stand up and be heard, will be considerably enhanced by this experience. We were very proud this year of the three teams, Shoreham College, Lancing College and The Towers, that participated in our first round held at the Towers, in Beeding, and the winning school, Shoreham College, went on to win their area final at Chichester (against six other schools), to finally bow out with great credit in our District final at the Warden Park School, Cuckfield, just missing out on a trip to the Regional final at Reading. I do hope that other schools in our area, such as Kings Manor, Boundstone and Steyning Grammar will take up our offer of entry to next years competition and of course, any school not mentioned, who is interested in participating, should contact Shoreham & Southwick Rotary Club for details. This, YOUR Rotary Club will be more than happy to offer advice and support to any school who is willing to give it a shot! Dr David Gordon To advertise call: 01273 452065 24/3/09 13:00:37

Parking Enforcement Officers will be on duty in Adur from 5th March 2009. If you park illegally i.e. on double yellow lines, in bus stops etc, you risk getting a fixed penalty ticket of £70! Police and PCSO’s will still continue to issue tickets for vehicle obstruction i.e. blocking entry/exits, parking on pavements, zig-zag lines at pedestrian crossings etc. Distraction burglaries are still happening. We would implore you not to let anyone into your home that you are not expecting and don’t know. There have even been incidents in some areas whereby the caller(s) has posed as a member of the police to try and gain access to your home. Please call 999 if you have suspicious persons attempting to gain access to your house. If you do have elderly family or neighbours, please take a moment to make them aware. By liaising with the Swiss Gardens School in Shoreham and WSCC Highways, the bus stop in Swiss Gardens Road has now been marked out ‘Bus Stop’. This makes it illegal to park in the bus stop, thus easing traffic problems at school drop off and pick up times, making it safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Easter Lambing at Gaston Farm, Slindon
o
ne of THe first signs of Spring is young lambs gambolling about in the fields Our recent luck with the weather coincides nicely with the arrival of the first newborn lambs at
Gaston Farm, Slindon. Gaston Farm celebrated the birth of it’s first spring lambs on St Patrick’s Day (17th March 2009) when two babies were born prematurely. The rest of the flock, estimated to be carrying 560 lambs, will be giving birth throughout April. This means a long period of sleepless nights, feeding, nurturing and the pitter-patter of tiny hooves for head shepherd Darren and his father Gerald Sercombe. You can get close to these adorable lambs and see the miracle of life at Gaston Farm throughout April where, for just £4 per person (under 2s are free), you can see and learn about the lambs, ride out on a tractor and trailer to see the sheep in their natural habitat out on the South Downs, stroke a baby lamb and if you’re really lucky, witness a birth first hand! There is free parking for cars and coaches, a picnic area, refreshments plus washing and toilet facilities. Gaston Farm is open between 10am and 5pm 7 days a week and family and school groups are welcome, though large groups are advised to pre-book. Gaston Farm is on Church Hill Road in Slindon, just off the A29 between Pulborough and Fontwell (BN18 0RS for SatNav). Visit their web site: www.gastonfarm.com or call 01243 814269.

Florrie Forde I
T’s oDD To think of a star of the old time music hall finding a new audience in the age of the Internet, but it is actually the case. Clips of former Shoreham resident Florrie Forde singing ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’ and her other famous sing-along numbers can be viewed on the YouTube site. Florrie was born Flora Augusta Flanagan in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia. She was the sixth of the eight children of stonemason Lott Flannagan, and his wife Phoebe, who also had two children from a prior marriage. In 1878, Florrie’s parents’ marriage ended and ten years later her mother married theatrical costumier, Thomas Snelling Ford. Phoebe had another six children by Ford before she died aged forty-six. Florrie and some of her sisters were sent to a convent, but she and her sister Nan ran away to stay with an aunt in Sydney. It was here, at the age of sixteen, that she appeared on the stage for the first time, adopting the last name of her stepfather as her stage name. Florrie Ford’s first appearance was as a vaudeville singer at the Polytechnic Music Hall, on the 1st of February 1892. A year later, aged only seventeen she married Walter Emanuel Bew, an English widower of thirty-one. In 1897, aged twenty-one, Florrie headed for London. Here she signed a three year contract and became known as the ‘Australian Marie Lloyd’. Her first British appearances took place on the August bank holiday, when she took to the stage at three separate music halls, The South London Palace, The Pavilion and The Oxford that same evening. She was a sensation and was immediately booked for three years on the Moss and Thornton music hall circuit. With clear diction, and a commanding stage presence she soon became top of the bill wherever she went. On stage she specialised in songs where the audience was invited to join in with the catchy chorus. Florrie’s songs often took a light hearted look at the topics of the day, including “Oh Flo” a tribute to a ‘motorina’ as the first women to get behind the wheel of an automobile

were dubbed. In 1909 she signed a contract with Edison to make sound recordings. By 1936 she had recorded a total of seven hundred songs, at first on cylinders and later on 78-inch records. Florrie’s most famous songs included 'Down At The Old Bull And Bush', 'Hold Your Hand Out, Naughty Boy', and 'Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside – the most successful recording of the Edwardian era. Florrie’s flamboyant stage costumes often included huge hats with towering ostrich plumes. She was known for her quick changes, making five switches of dress, hat and shoes in one night, and only taking a few seconds for each change. Florrie Forde appeared in the very first Royal Command Performance in 1912. During the First World War, her songs ‘Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag’, ‘Goodbye-ee’ and ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’ helped to maintain the morale of the troops. She also sang for the soldiers and appeared at charity events in aid of the war effort. In the 1920s, Florrie Forde formed her own travelling review and she also produced pantomimes, as well as continuing to appear in the role of principal boy. During the 1920s, she was instrumental in establishing the singing duo of Chesney Allen and Bud Winthrop, bringing them together in a show she called 'Flo and Co'. Winthrop used Florrie's maiden name as his stage name in 'Flanagan' and Allen. Florrie also appeared in several movies, most notably “My Old
Dutch” in 1934 with British actress Betty Balfour. On the 22nd of November 1905 at a registery office in Paddington, Florrie married for the second time. Her new husband was a Worthing art dealer named Laurence Barnett. The couple moved to Shoreham beach, leasing a bungalow called ‘Gull’s Nest at the eastern end of the Widewater lagoon. At this time the beach was known as Bungalow Town and was already becoming home to a number of stars from the worlds of the theatre and music hall. They included two other Australians, Albert Whelan and ‘Billy’ Williams, who became a close friend of Florrie’s. With this vibrant show business community to call upon, Florrie established ‘Flo’s Beach Club’ near the footbridge and the shops of Ferry Road. It was both a club and a dance hall and from the 1920s until the Second World War, provided entertainment for locals and visitors alike. Florrie Forde collapsed and died of a cerebral haemorrhage after singing for troops in Aberdeen on April 18th 1940. She was buried near her daughter’s home in Streatham, South London. The poet Louis MacNeice paid tribute to her in a poem, 'Death of An Actress' and her memory is also enshrined in the Florrie Forde bar at the Old Bull And Bush public house in North London. Judy Upton Judy’s next stage play ‘The Ballad Of A Thin Man’ will be at the Ropetackle Centre from Thursday 21st – Saturday 23rd of May. To advertise call: 01273 452065 24/3/09 13:01:14

Woolworths' Shoreham Cover Girl
f
oLLoWInG on fRom the Joan Upon article about Woolworths in Shoreham, we were contacted by Pat Laker (Bennett) who worked in Woolworths Shoreham from 1952-1956
32 INSIDE 0409.indd 32
Woolworths had a monthly magazine called The New Bond (after the head office address in New Bond Street) for their staff with such things as; who got married, messages from branches, news, who’s leaving etc.. One of the most popular features was a Cover Girl competition and in the August 1954 edition, Shoreham’s very own Pat Bennett, won the cover girl competition. The Cover Girl would get her portrait painted and have a local feature painted on the back page and in Pat’s case she asked for St Marys Church, Shoreham. Here you can see a copy of the front and back cover, a photo of Pat in 1954 and the middle page spread of the runners up from the August 1954 edition of The New Bond.
