JULY 2009
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to this months edition of Inside Shoreham.
We are now into the supposedly the warmest month of the year. Renamed for Julius Ceasar who was born in this month, it is holiday time with schools breaking up for summer and families off to the coast or abroad. The summer holidays is a great way to recharge ones battery and more often not when I have been away for at least two weeks, by the second week I am actually more able to feel that I can leave everything that makes life so dynamic at home at home. By the second week I have soaked up the sun, tasted the local produce, read a few books, seen local historical places, and naturally enjoyed my family in a new environment with no timetables. So, I wish that you have a fabulous holiday full of relaxation, fun and lots of great weather, food and good company. In July there are several plays on in the Barn. One by the Young Wick theatre and another by Southwick Players. We also have lots of activities in the What’s on guide which should fill the month up and never be bored. We continue with our local history by Judy Upton as well as Our Local Support Police Officers. We also introduce Sylvia Lemoniates, our local photographer. She has been providing photos for the front cover for a while now. Read about her inside. Until August, we bid you a wonderful July. Kind Regards Angela

THE THWARTING OF BARON BOLLIGREW

Long ago there lived a Duke whose country was overrun by dragons. When his Knights in shining armour have killed them all, bringing back the dragons’ tails to prove it, the Duke announces that they can now enjoy a nice lazy life. Sir Percival Smootheley-Smoothe, Sir Graceless Strongbody and Sir Digby Vayne-Trumpington are all for it, but the fourth knight, the soft-hearted Sir Oblong Fitz Oblong, thinks they should move on to other areas to succour the poor and needy. Since the decision must be unanimous the Duke is persuaded to get Oblong out of way by appointing him a Knight Errant and despatching him on a dangerous
mission to the Bolligrew Islands. Ruled by the bad Baron Bolligrew with his sidekick Squire Blackheart, the Islands are a scary place, also home to a dangerous, fire-breathing dragon. The Baron has an arrangement with the dragon, but doesn’t trust him to keep it. Oblong arrives after a wild voyage, and starts to encounter a wonderful assortment of friends and foes. There’s a magpie which can’t resist stealing shiny things, a peasant called Obidiah who paints eggs for a living – and the wicked wizard Moloch, summoned by Bolligrew to bewitch the poor Knight. Oblong has some hair-raising adventures, and even risks being eaten by the dragon. Will good triumph over evil in the end? To advertise call: 01273 452065

Fiji Feet “Can you help?” He asked. My “yes” meant this was the week that Fiji came to Southwick
W
ell not all of Fiji, but a rugby teams worth certainly. A group of young Fijian men who were to play in a set of charity matches locally in June. Their story being a “Cool Running” - of Rugby. (A great, fun film - one of the true story types). It is a film where the least likely people chose to achieve a personal change and great national success, with the right help and support. The Fijian team, comprised of the Chief Waiter, the Chef, the Jet Ski instructor and the handyman, (all from Uprising Beach Resort Fiji), are a group of least likely people who have become sportingly successful. Naturally, whilst on tour, they had suffered some foot and shoulder injuries and needed somewhere to get Podiatry and Sports Therapy help quickly. Manor Farm House being home to a multidiscipline set of practitioners, including Podiatry and Sports Physiotherapists, meant we could respond readily to their request. And so they came, were helped, and on the Sunday of that week they conquered! What’s this got do with us? The clue lies in that it is about ordinary folks. The Fijian team are ordinary folks in everyday jobs who value their health and bodies and have chosen to keep fit in order to play a sport, or, have a form of fun of their choice. Of course, many of us wouldn’t even want to pick up a rugby ball, never mind run down a field with a herd of large muscled blokes, like wildebeests, running after us. But to enjoy health is to more readily enjoy life and be able to do more, at many different levels and at many a different age. Our right to choose is precious. Yet, strangely, it can come hard to us to think that personal health can sometimes be a matter of choice, our choice. The choice to attain it and then to maintain it, keep it, protect it can mean committing to a slightly different attitude and letting others help us along the
10
way. The Fijian players example this, being brought together by one man, Rene Munch, and choosing to put the personal effort in (along with other Fijian’s whose health interest is not rugby) brought good change for ordinary people. It is reckoned that 30% (*) of all GP consultations are linked to musculoskeletal conditions and, with some 200 (*) different types of muscle and bone problems, any of us can get an ache or injury, just moving the sun lounger! Consequently, much is being made of the need for us all to have access to improving and maintaining our health. Access to good musculoskeletal care these days can often mean a team approach to caring for those with muscle and bone (skeletal) and joint problems, resulting either from sports injuries, ordinary wear and tear, work related injury or reduced mobility through our ageing that might tempt us to be less mobile. Equally, there is a growing emphasis on the need for people to have access to good health education about how to prevent ourselves sustaining some of these issues and problems, apart from the ageing that is – not even medicine can beat that yet! Maybe a choice for health activity could be dancing, brisk walking, cycling, running, long leisurely walks. Of course you could make it more fun by doing it with a friend! Maybe your health is limited already and you feel unable to do any of the above and a bit helpless. Sometimes, just the right kind of advice on the right kind of simple exercises, even chair based ones, can be enough to make you feel you are getting somewhere and back in control. The Fijian team have now gone on to beat the USA, France and (scary name) the International Samurai!
Okay, let’s be honest, must of us are not going to be great sports people, or, tour Europe playing sport, so, where is our reward? It is encouraging to know that when we make even a small positive change in our health through a simple increase in simple exercise we make gains in much more of our life and well-being. Choice can be about taking some control back of our health. Keeping active and on the move is liberating. Choose Movement, Chose Health, Choose Freedom. * Department of Health Figures

tudents and tutors from Northbrook College’s popular art courses will be showing their work at the Heene Gallery, Heene Road, Worthing from Saturday 25th July until Monday 27th July, 10am-5pm. The exhibition will showcase the work of students on part-time day and evening courses and will include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and stained glass. Entry is free and refreshments will be available. Maggie Tredwell, one of the Northbrook tutors said, ‘We feel it is important that students have a chance to exhibit this impressive range of artwork. The exhibition will illustrate how well our courses cater for all abilities. Learners are encouraged and supported whatever their starting point. Some of our students have returned year after year.’
Tutors from the college, all local professional artists and designers, will also be showing work in the exhibition. The Northbrook Adult and Community Learning Art Department are fortunate to have a talented team of qualified tutors including Steve Carroll and Maggie Tredwell who have won awards, locally and nationally. Steve, who is about to publish his third graphic novel, will be teaching three courses in September including the new art history course. Marcus Finch, who is well known around art clubs and societies in the South for his creative and inspiring demonstrations, teaches for Northbrook in Worthing, Shoreham and Southwick. Sue Wallis, who teaches some of the Stained Glass courses, obtained her

degree from Swansea Inst. on the most prestigious Stained Glass college course in Europe and she now passes on her vast knowledge of techniques to her students. She has beginners and advanced courses starting in September. Tutors will be on hand to discuss the new range of autumn courses. Students will be helping to run the Heene Gallery exhibition so visitors can ask them more about the artwork on show, much of which will be for sale. This exhibition will give people a chance to pick up a prospectus, see the wide range of courses on offer at Northbrook College and discover how they can develop their creative side. Taking a class is one of the easiest ways to have a good night out, learn new skills and meet new people. 13

Shoreham Fort O
n the far Eastern side of Shoreham beach is one of the town’s most historic constructions Shoreham Fort. Although now largely neglected and grassed over it is still an important reminder of the South Coast’s maritime past. The Shoreham Fort, or Redoubt was completed in June 1857. It is one of only two small forts from this period still in existence on the South Coast, the other being at Littlehampton. Shoreham Redoubt was of a new design in its day, being constructed with a Carnot Wall within a surrounding ditch. The fort was built to house six rifled barrel guns, which had a longer range than those previously available to the British armed forces. Up until the nineteenth century, the shape of Shoreham harbour had made it unlikely to be the site of an invasion from the continent, but with the harbour entrance excavated at its present site in 1816, Shoreham became more vulnerable. As tensions between Britain and Emperor Napoleon III of France grew, the need for a fort to guard the harbour was finally seen as a priority by Palmerston’s government. Construction began early in 1857 and was finished by the summer. It’s recorded that it cost 11,685 pounds and 10 shillings to build. It was known as one of ‘Palmerston’s Follies’ as by the time it was finished the Crimean War was over and the risk of an invasion from the continent was small. The fort was built in the shape of a rectangular half-moon with ramparts made from banks of earth. Although designed to house six muzzle-loaded 68 pounder guns it is believed only five were initially installed. The gun emplacements stood 15 feet above sea level, and could be seen by incoming ships - to act as a deterrent to would-be aggressors. The emplacements were designed to be higher than the cannons to protect the crew from enemy fire. On each gun platform, a wooden gun carriage housed a cannon that was each manned by a crew of seven. Similar cannons can still be seen today at Newhaven Fort. Below ground were the magazines, each able to store 126 gunpowder
16
www.shorehamfort.co.uk
barrels as well as tanks of water. Covered bastions or Caponiers are the distinct red brick buildings with the steep roofs that stand at the three corners of the fort. They were designed to allow soldiers inside to fire along the outside wall from cover. As well as the rifle slits to provide all-round defensive cover, the Caponiers contained the fort’s toilets; separate ones for officers and men. The toilet buckets were emptied into a nearby cesspit Staffing wise the fort was designed for two officers, a master gunner and 35 NCOs and privates, who were all housed in a barracks block at the rear. This block was split into twelve separate rooms, with at its entrance a guardroom and a cell. The officer’s had their own kitchen and there was also a cookhouse to feed the rest of the men. Outside, the central area of the fort provided a parade ground. Magazines at the end of the ramparts stored the shells and cartridges that would have to be carried by hand to the gunners. In the 19th century the 1st Sussex Volunteer Artillery of East Division were based at the fort and had their headquarters at Brighton. These men were famed for their shooting skills and although never called upon to defend the port from invaders they were certainly well prepared to do so.
On completion the design of the fort was criticised in parliament. Concerns raised included the fact that there was difficulty turning the guns on the marrow parapets. Some additional fortification was also planned including a gun battery opposite the entrance to the harbour (on the site now occupied by the lighthouse) and another gun battery towards Aldrington Basin. There was a new fort planned too, possibly replacing the current one or being constructed nearby. None of these plans were carried out however. Shoreham Fort continued to be manned until 1896. In World War 2 it briefly had a role again when a gun battery and a searchlight tower was constructed there. Before this around 1914 The Sunny South Film Company used the barrack block of the fort for a time. The parade ground became the set for four of their films, including ‘The Showman’s Dream’ where a canvas backdrop turned it into circus. The barrack block also served as a private home for a time, before being demolished around 1960. In 1980 Bridget Harding managed to persuade West Sussex County Council to do some renovation work to the fort, but it is now once again largely neglected. Judy Upton To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Fixed rate mortgages rise L
ast MONTH saw many lenders increasing their fixed rate offerings. This is despite the Bank of England base rate remaining level at 0.5%. In fact, many fixed rates have risen by as much as 0.5%. This sudden increase by most lenders has had people rushing to book new rates before the rise. In these uncertain times most people are opting for the security of a fixed rate deal, hoping that this will see them through the credit crunch period. Whilst increasing their fixed rates, some lenders have actually been reducing the margin they charge on their variable tracker rate deals, so the percentage they are charging above bank base rate has reduced.
much larger loan, a fixed rate can be just what you need. Many people actually pay extra each month for the financial stability a fixed rate can bring. Whatever your circumstances, a good independent adviser will be able to explain all of the options, and will make sure that whatever rate you take, it is exactly the right one for you.
If you would like advice on the issues I have r aised, or any other mortgage or financial issue, for a free consultation please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667.
What does this mean to you? Quite simply, as fixed rates have increased, so the variable ‘tracker’ rates are suddenly looking much more appealing (A tracker is a variable rate which moves in line with the Bank of England base rate). It is a confusing time, do you pay a higher rate from the start to get the security of a fixed rate? Alternatively, do you pay a lower rate from the start, but with the knowledge that your rate could increase? It is a fine balancing act, and one which an experienced adviser will be able to help you with.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
What needs to be taken into account? There are many things to be taken into account. Firstly, there are the hard facts, what is the actual difference in rate between the best fixed or the best variable rate? How much would the variable rate have to increase by to be paying more than the fixed rate, and what is the likelihood of that happening? Your adviser will look at your personal circumstances; could you afford a hike in your monthly payment? Are you cautious in nature, or are you happy to pay less now and face the consequences should rates rise? The size of your mortgage and the amount of your income are also factors to be considered.
Why are some people still opting for fixed rates? Even if the initial payment is higher, many people like to know exactly how much they will be paying for a set period of time. This can give peace of mind, and will stop you worrying every time the Bank of England meet. If you are stretched financially, or if you are taking on a

Her constant companion is her camera which she takes everywhere to capture that moment in time. She loves to photograph the wide variety of flowers which she finds in the lovely front gardens in Southwick as well as having chats with local residents. Sylvia bought her first digital camera 3 years ago. She is self taught spending hundred of hours taking thousands of
24
frames and constantly learning from her mistakes. Infact she realises that with digital technology growing so fast it would take another 30 years to really learn all about it. If you would like to see some of the great shots that she has taken, then you can see these fantastic pictures fully blown up and mounted on the walls of the Fish Shop in Hove Lagoon. They are incredible. Sylvia plans to have an exhibition of her local close-up images within the coming year. By sharing her viewpoint of the nature she hopes to create new appreciation for the details we so often overlook. She gave a lecture to
students on the Introduction to digital photography at the Swiss School, to help budding photographers. On the 11th July the Charity fair in Southwick (weather permitting) – Sylvia will be having a stall and will be selling her local photos as photo cards. So please go along and have the opportunity to chat to this lovely lady and hear of her passion for this subject. Additionally, you can always contact her directly to see her portfolio of work. So when you see somebody taking photos of your flowers in your front garden or near the sea, it could be Sylvia and on the cover of one of our future magazines! To advertise call: 01273 452065

BE SAFE THIS SUMMER! A message from our PCSOs A
s Police and Police Community Support Officers, some of us parents too, we find it very concerning to note the amount of underage drinking, sometimes excessively. We come across all sorts of drink related problems. A 16 year old that had drunk so much she was found unconscious in the park and had to be taken to hospital. A very drunken 17 year old teenager attacking people and running in and out of the road in front of vehicles. Members of the public tried to restrain him, but he fought back. This youth was taken into custody by the police. If found, all youths with alcohol in public will have this confiscated by the police. With alcohol comes more antisocial behaviour. Also the detriment to the health and safety of youngsters drinking alcohol. Where and how do the youngsters get the alcohol? It could be that they get it from family members, older friends purchase it for them, or they are being sold alcohol without being asked for proof of age by the licensed premises. Either way this is an offence that carries a heavy fine. At this time of summer days and lighter evenings, these incidents do increase when children are out more. Sussex Police know that nationally 16 children every day are hospitalised across the country as a result of alcohol abuse. If your friend has drunk too much don’t leave him/her alone, stay and call for help from police or ambulance. Sussex Police are asking the public to let us know if they see or have suspicions of alcohol being served/sold to the underage. Any information is treated in strict confidence. We need your help to identify and tackle this. Let us know on line at www.tellsussexpolice.com or phone 0845 60 70 999. With your help something can be done.

If you are concerned about your child’s alcohol use contact Norma Buss Community Drugs and Alcohol Worker on line at norma.buss@adur.gov.uk or phone 01273 441215 for advice. There is a useful website, visit: www.safedrinking.org
DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE - YOU CANNOT REVERSE THE DAMAGE Each person’s tolerance to alcohol depends on a range of factors including: • Weight • Gender • Age • Metabolism • Current stress levels • Whether they have eaten recently • Amount of Alcohol So the only safe option is not to drink alcohol if you plan to drive, and never offer an alcoholic drink to someone else who is intending to drive. Think before you drink! If your friends try to drink and drive have the courage to stop them.

With the onset of summer many motorcyclists are seen not wearing protective clothing. As PCSO’s we see all sorts. A young girl on a motor scooter — the only protective gear being the helmet. It was a very hot day and she only had a flimsy strapless sun dress on; bare tops, shorts, no gloves, sandals…bad news. It's not rocket science; your flesh and tarmac do not go well together! Statistics show that more accidents happen on short journeys and this is perhaps when most people would not bother to put on protective clothing. The resulting injuries to an unprotected body don’t bear thinking about — months in hospital with skin grafts etc. Nigel of Norton Motorcycling Training was involved in an accident 10 years ago. A crash at 40 mph, wearing full leathers, resulted in four weeks hospitalisation and six months off work. Nigel stresses it would have been much worse without the protective clothing. BikeSafe is an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom who work with the whole of the biking world to help to lower the number of motorcycle rider casualties. By passing on their knowledge, skills and experience. Police motorcyclists can help you become a safer more competent rider. Go to the website www.bikesafe.co.uk for more information.

Bunglow Town – a poem As a boy I’d scamper over a shingle beach, to sit upon a groyne of oak which looked like a row of joined-up biplanes, but ready for a soak, my feet in brine coming up to my knees, with the swelling of the tide, my fusilage was a slanting trunk, with oak planks for wings, spread wide, I was sitting in the cockpit of an Empire flying-boat, taxiing the foam, as I’d seen Fairy and Gipsy Moths taxi at the local Aerodrome. My Mother’s call for tea, would awake me from my play, and I’d leave my now submerging cockpit, to resume another day. That groyne was a boon in many ways, not only for a tidal-check, But also for ‘crabbing’, wind-break and excellent diving-deck, We lived in a beach bungalow, set well halfpage_may09:Layout above high water line,1 21/05/2009 16:55
but when the sea was storm driven, our verandah’s feet were in the brine. our home was named, ‘Tit-Willow’and quite near to,’Dingley Dell’ with ‘Throstle-Nest’and ‘The Swallows’ close by, they all fitted in so well. This town must have been invented to enchant any childhood heart, and in this role it did not fail to fully play it’s part. When World War 2 started, the bungalows were cleared, In case the Germans used them for cover it was feared, The groynes too have been replaced, with the harsher, concrete kind, instead of those lovely oaken ‘planes’ I carry in my mind, and now I’m in my ninth decade, I still dream of those halcyon days, for somewhere on that shingle beach, a part of me still lays. The Rotary has developed over the past 104 years into a wonderful organization all over the world and men and women wishing to become a part of this huge family will certainly find a Rotary Club near to them. A club and an organization is always looking for new members who wish to be part of something really special in the world today. A Paul Harris Fellowship is awarded through Rotary Club to a person who has made special contributions to the community or further afield. This year the following awards

were presented given to Lisa McKinney, Robina Methven and Tony Matthews by President Cecil French. Lisa was rewarded for many years of service to the local community as a Councillor and has been Chairman of the ADC. She also worked tirelessly to ensure that the marvellous Old Shoreham Tollbridge was saved. Robina, a Nurse, has devoted her life to the Red Cross. She has been a Red Cross trainer and been involved in many disasters as a Nurse and comforter through the organisation. Tony is a retired Police Inspector who has been Chairman of the West Sussex Housing Association for many years. This has been a difficult, time consuming post in which many difficult decisions have had to be made to keep the Association functioning at its present high level.
