Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment
Hello and welcome to this months edition of Inside Shoreham. I hope that we have a better month weather-wise and not so wet and blowy. We can hope! Well to cheer us up, you can read some great articles of things happening this month. For example, we have a wonderful article this month celebrating the Diamond Anniversary of local couple Dodo and Harry Treadwell. We send them our best wishes for 60 years of wedded bliss and for many more years ahead. This month’s local historical piece by Judy Upton is about Bramber Castle which dates back to 1073 and is a very popular local attraction, but do you know its history? We also have this month the latest piece from our local PCSOs. You may have seen some posters around Adur, by children encouraging dog owners to clean up after their dogs. Read about their origin on page 27 and much more news! If you have been given or own an orchid and would like tips on how to grow and take care of them, there is an open day at Southwick Nursery with the Orchid Society for you to go along and get great tips. Finally, there are two new local businesses opening up in Shoreham Prestige Autotech (specialist car mechanics) and the other is Sunshine Nursery (for your little tykes) and we wish them all the best in their new ventures. Have a fabulous August, Angela

Prestige Autotech opens in Shoreham
A
NeW AuTOMOTiVe repair centre has opened in Shoreham, specialising in vehicle diagnostics for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Smart and Mini. Prestige Autotech are also equipped to carry out general servicing and repairs for many other makes and models. Owners Steve Rice (pictured left) and Phil Cook are highly qualified vehicle technicians. They have over 35 years industry experience between them. The majority of which has been gained working on prestige vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Both are local to Shoreham and are keen to establish a reputation for good service and honest advice. Phil has followed in his father’s professional footsteps. Many locals will remember Trevor Cook who operated his own independent garage, TW Cook Motors, on Shoreham Beach until 2003. Inspired by his father, Phil gained his experience working for Vauxhall and Ford before rising to the ranks of Diagnostic Technician for Mercedes-Benz. Now Phil is determined to put that experience to good use in his own venture. He can see there is a gap in the market for a business such as Prestige Autotech Scottish born Steve Rice, picked up the spanners working for Ford in Greenock, Renfrewshire before moving to a Sussex based independent Rolls-Royce specialist 20 years ago. For a short while Steve worked for Halfords at various locations throughout
Sussex before gaining specialist diagnostic experience with both BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Phil says, “Without the high overheads the main dealers have, we are able to pass the savings on to our customers. We can offer all the experience and knowledge that you will find at a main dealer but at a competitive price and with a more personal approach.” Steve adds, “We believe in meeting our customers face-to-face and not via a receptionist as this can dilute information. Not only does this reassure the customer that they are in good hands but it also means we can get to the root of the problem a lot quicker.” Most motorists will be all too familiar with the frustrations of second hand information and getting a straightforward answer. This is where Prestige Autotech is different. The customer is their priority. When you take your car to Prestige Autotech you can be assured that not only is the car in safe hands but also that everything will be explained clearly to you. Phil and Steve pride Mercedes-Benz BMW Smart Mini themselves on Specialist German Vehicle Technicians being approachable and friendly so taking your car to be fixed shouldn’t be daunting. Prestige Autotech employ the latest in diagnostic equipment providing the highest level of service and quality. Whether your vehicle is a classic Mercedes-Benz or a modern Mini you can be assured of first class workmanship and honest advice. You can find Prestige Autotech at Hall Business Park, behind DAF Commercial in Dolphin Road, Shoreham – centrally positioned they are within easy reach of the railway station and able to offer a courtesy car if needed.

‘Guide human’ sought for blind dog at Dogs Trust d
OGS TruST SHOreHAM staff today launched an appeal to find a ‘guide human’ for a loveable blind Lurcher in their care. Maria is a striking-looking 4 year old Lurcher who was found wandering the streets a month ago and is now hoping to find her perfect home. Tracey Rae, Dogs Trust Shoreham manager, explains: “Poor Maria contracted an eye disease when she was
younger and now is almost completely blind. Despite an unfortunate start in life she is one of the most loveable residents currently at our centre. She is very gentle and friendly and a real favourite with the staff.” Maria’s blindness causes her no discomfort but she needs a quiet home, ideally with another calm dog to help her settle in. Her new ‘guide human’

owners must have a garden she can potter about in, and she may struggle to manage more than one flight of stairs.
If you think you can give Maria the perfect home, please contact Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Shoreham on 01273 452576 or visit the centre between 12.00 midday and 4.00pm - any day except Tuesdays, when the centre is closed. 13 24/07/2009 15:46

Bramber Castle W
illiAM de BrAOSe built Bramber castle shortly after the Norman Conquest, around the year 1073. The name Bramber is from the Saxon 'Brymmburh' which means a fortified place. Bramber was at this time in history an important port as the river Adur was wide and deep enough to be navigated as a shipping channel. The castle held a fine defensive position on the top of a natural mound that offers views as far as the Surrey hills to the north, as well as many miles of coastline. Bramber is a motte and bailey castle and contains the ruins of a Norman church. Today the most prominent feature is the west wall of the gatehouse tower, which at 24 metres, still stands almost to its full original height. Within it, holes that held the floor joists and a single window are still recognisable. Beyond are the foundations of the guardhouse and living quarters, but sadly little more of the castle still exists than a few sections of its perimeter wall. The ‘motte’, or mound is north of the gatehouse and rises to a height of 10 metres and the ‘bailey’ refers to the perimeter wall of the castle. The church at Bramber Castle was originally built in 1075 as a chapel for the fortification and also housed a small Benedictine college. Some of the original nave remains, but the building was badly damaged in the 17th century and inexpertly restored by the Victorians. The original tower and transepts now house the present chancel. Bramber had been important to the Saxon kings, and with the 1066 Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror gave the surrounding lands to his kinsman William de Braose. However in 1208, in the reign of King John, the castle became embroiled in a crisis. The current baron, also named William de Braose had been an ally of the King John, but now the monarch turned against him, claiming he owed him money for fines levied against his Irish estates. It is likely though that the main reason for King John’s actions was envy of the de Braose family’s wealth and castles. The king asked for the four de Braose’s children as hostages while
16 INSIDE 0809.indd 16
their father was being investigated. William de Braose’s wife Matilda though was not going to entrust her children to a king who had already murdered his own nephew, Prince Arthur. Fearing for the youngsters’ lives and with the king’s army marching on Bramber castle, the de Braose family fled. William escaped to France but his wife Matilda and children were captured and taken to Windsor and Corfe Castles where they were deliberately starved to death. It is said that the ghosts of two girls and a boy from the family still haunt Bramber castle, looking emaciated and begging for scraps. William de Braose died in exile and King John seized Bramber Castle and gave it and its lands to his second son, the Earl of Cornwall. Eventually after a period of confiscation Bramber Castle returned to the ownership of the de Braose family and was part of their Barony of Bramber until their hereditary line finally died out in 1324. Then it passed to the Mowbray family, who then held the castle for several generations, and finally to the Howard family. It was occupied until the 14th century and then left derelict and abandoned to fall into disrepair.
Bramber castle’s later history is not well documented, though records mention a skirmish in Bramber during the English Civil War, around 1642. It is known that the church was badly damaged by Cromwell’s guns being set up in its transepts. From here it was possible to fire on the castle itself and the Parliamentary forces did destroy much of the castle. After the Civil War, it is likely that much of the rubble and remaining stonework was taken by local people to repair or build their own homes. In Victorian times, Bramber Castle became a popular day-trip destination. Bramber’s Castle Hotel and pub rented the grounds as a tea rooms and pleasure park. Like Shoreham’s Swiss Gardens, Bramber Castle was bustling every weekend with coach parties and children on Sunday school outings. Fairground rides and amusements were set up all around the castle. Today however the castle mound is a much more tranquil beauty spot, popular with walkers, picnickers, and those who want to peruse the ruins and enjoy the wonderful views. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Mortgages – Tracker Rates looking competitive i
N JuNe MANY lenders increased the cost of their fixed rate mortgages, some by as much as 1%. At the same time, many reduced their tracker rates. Previous to this, most people were rushing to take fixed rate mortgages but now things have changed. The Bank of England base rate is at an all time low of 0.5%. The tracker deals are set at a percentage above the bank base rate, for example, they could track at 3.25% above, meaning that your rate would be 3.75%. If the bank base rate increases, then the margin would still apply and also if it reduces. The base rate is only likely to increase therefore people have been rushing for the security of a fixed rate, but with the recent increases they no longer look so attractive. To illustrate this, I have looked up some rates assuming 75% borrowing. If you took a two year fixed rate this would be in the region of 4.48%, the two year tracker would commence at 3.29%. A three year fixed would be approximately 4.98%, compare this to a three year tracker starting at 3.29%, the five year fixed would be around 5.79%, for comparison, a tracker rate for the full term of your mortgage would start at 3.75%. When looking at these actual figures, you can see why people would find the tracker rates suddenly very attractive. Taking the three year fixed rate as an example, the bank base rate would need to increase by 1.69% to equate to the fixed rate alternative. The next question is, how likely is this to happen, and if it does, when? The US Fed recently announced that they anticipate keeping rates very low for an extended period of time, this has an impact on our markets and our rates. People are now starting to think that rates will remain low for longer than expected. This, combined with the higher fixed rates has meant that tracker rates are now looking much more attractive.
What rate is best for you? If you are taking a new mortgage then the rate is very much dependent on the percentage borrowing you are taking. If you need a 85% mortgage or a 90%, the rate will be higher and your choice of fixed or variable could be limited. (In fact currently there are very few variable rates if you need a 90% mortgage). As there are only a few deals you may find that a fixed rate mortgage would be the only viable option. If you have a higher deposit you will have a much larger choice of both fixed and tracker rates.
In this fast changing market, the only way of finding the best rate for you is to look at the actual rates on offer for your situation and borrowing level. Once you know what choice you have your adviser will be able to match the right deal for your situation. You should speak to an independent adviser who has access to the whole marketplace.
For independent financial advice and a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. ussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) says stark climate predictions are a ‘call to arms’ after Hilary Benn, Environment Secretary, announced the results of cutting-edge scientific projections. Based on Met Office science, the UK Climate Projections 2009, provide a detailed map of how climate change might affect every part of the UK over the next century. In the South East projections include an increase in average summer temperatures of between 2 and 6 degrees centigrade and a 22% decrease in average summer rainfall. “These findings are sobering,” says Dr Tony Whitbread, Chief Executive
22 INSIDE 0809.indd 22
of SWT, “Without decisive action we face soaring summer temperatures, water shortages, heat stress and floods - all of which impacts on our health, the economy and our wildlife. “We need to create a living landscape in Sussex now,” continues Dr Whitbread, “If our environment becomes further degraded it will not only be wildlife that suffers. At a national and local level we must build an environment that is able to adapt to climate change. This means building a large green network – a matrix of wildlife habitats so that plants and animals can move and adapt. Currently our wildlife habitats are too fragmented and as the
climate changes, plants and animals will simply disappear resulting in the degradation of the environment on which we all rely.” Restoring the natural environment on a landscape-scale not only helps wildlife it can provide essential ecological services such as alleviating floods, controlling pollution and helping with the storage of carbon dioxide. SWT is already proposing green networks for Sussex and endeavouring to develop larger blocks of wildlife habitat centred on its nature reserves. The Trust aims to work with local communities and landowners to build on this vision of a healthy, interconnected, robust
environment – an attractive green matrix in which people and wildlife can flourish in a changing world.
To find out how SWT is working towards developing an adaptable environment visit our climate change page at www.sussexwt.org.uk/ conservation/page 00029.htm Area maps and findings from the UK Climate Projections 2009 are publicly available online visit http://ukcp09.defra. gov.uk

Slimmers' reprieve! Southwick Healthy Eating Club saved from closure
Weighing in: Southwick Healthy Eating Club chairperson, Rita Watkins Club speaker “Helping older people to sustain healthy and fulfilling lives is what AOPN is all about,” says Peter Hornsby, AOPN community engagement worker. “It made absolute sense that we should step in and help the healthy eating group to survive.” The various aspects of running the club were divided into several small jobs so that none of the members felt overwhelmed with responsibility. This was then used as a basis of a constitution and regular participants were invited to become committee members. “ We really thought we were going to have to stop”, explains the Club’s newly appointed Chairperson, Rita Watkins. “We are so grateful for Peter’s involvement in setting up the constitution. We’re doing ok now!” With its future secure, the Club has drawn up a programme of speakers and activities for forthcoming meetings. Weight-loss expert and exMiss UK beauty queen, Aileen Chase, explains the Club’s healthy approach to living: “Plenty of fruit and vegetables, skimmed milk and not going without food. We have incentives to reach target weight but the main thing is support and friendship.”
For more information about Southwick Healthy Eating Club please contact Rita on: For a full directory of voluntary groups/services for older people visit: www.aopn.org.uk or call: 01273 900453.
“A
lCOHOl ANd CHOCOlATe!”, ”lack of will-power”, ”goodliving after I got married!”…just a few of the responses given by members of the Southwick Healthy Eating Club when asked why they so valued their weekly support group and ‘weigh-ins’. But just eight weeks ago the future of the flourishing over 60s slimmers’ club hung in the balance. Run by medical centre health visitors, the club faced imminent closure when the organisers withdrew their involvement. Fortunately the Club’s plight came to the attention of the Adur Older Persons’ Network (AOPN) and through its community engagement work it was able to offer the help and support required for the group to continue to independently. 24

A message from our PCSOs CLEANING UP THE DOG'S ACT Dog fouling has always been a priority problem at Neighbourhood Panel Meetings. Something had to be done. PCSO Heaton and PCSO Knight joined forces with the Adur Council to produce a poster designed by local children to put up all around Adur advertising the new Dog Control orders that came into force in April this year. These posters are designed to encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs. After all, it is not the dogs fault, but that of the owners. Children too, taking their dogs for a walk should also be educated to clear up.
Pictured right is the winner Mia Britton from Eastbrook North School, runner up Imogen Wilson from Eastbrook South School. Lucie Ayres from Shoreham Beach primary school was the second runner-up, but could not make the presentation day so PCSO Knight accepts the prize on her behalf.
to use compared with the trailer mobile unit we used to have. The intended purpose of PIB is as a visual aid (and shelter) to carry out Community Engagement, Crime Prevention Road Shows, Street Briefings, Urban Days etc., and supporting other local agency initiatives with our local government Safer Adur Team, Schools, Youth Workers, Fire Station to name a few. Come along and see members of your Neighbourhood Policing Team in action. . Some of you will no doubt have already seen PIB during our promotional events for National Drugs Week and National Bike Week. A lot more events are planned during the summer, and these will be advertised. Come along for a chat, information, advice, or just to say hello to the team. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, and remember we are there for you.
CRIME REDUCTION CONTINUES
Pictured here are PCSO Knight at the wheel, PCSO Hollin left, and PCSO Harris right. The Adur District continues to be a very safe place to live with the latest figures detailing crime reduction in four priority crime areas since the beginning

MEET PIB – OUR PORTABLE INFLATABLE BUILDING Sussex Police at Shoreham and Lancing would like to officially launch our Portable Inflatable Building, fondly known as PIB. It is rather special to us, and our ‘celebrities’ emblazoned on the side are PC Anouska Duffy, PCSO Sandra Heaton, and PCSO Metcalfe of the Neighbourhood Policing Team. It is much more convenient and easy
of April. The most significant decrease is in burglary which has seen a 55.3% reduction, vehicle crime has been reduced by 6.5% and criminal damage down by 7.3%. Sussex Police has a target of reducing crime by 3% in the forthcoming financial year. Currently Adur has an overall crime reduction of 18.9% which equates to 160 fewer victims since April in comparison to last year statistics thereby being a top performing District within Sussex Police. Operation Respect has been extremely successful during recent years in the reduction of crime and will be continuing during the summer months. Since the beginning of June the Adur Neighbourhood Response Teams and Neighbourhood Policing Teams have had street intervention with 80 members of the public and have seized over 40 litres of alcohol from local youths which clearly assists in reducing anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

Diamond wedding celebrations A
TeleGrAM frOM the Queen was among the many congratulations received by Dodo and Harry Treadwell from Southwick who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this August. The couple were married at the Parish Church of St Peter’s, Newton- inMakerfield, Lancashire, and came to live in Sussex shortly afterwards when Mr Treadwell took up a post as the Shoreham and District reporter for the now defunct Sussex Daily News. He later set up a freelance news agency and founded a successful public relations and publishing company. Mrs Treadwell created a 28 INSIDE 0809.indd 28
unique shop in Shoreham-by-Sea The Real Thing - which provided an outlet for the work of many local potters and Sussex craftsmen. The couple also ran a youth club in Shoreham where they taught
ballroom dancing and Mr Treadwell was a founder member and chairman of Shoreham and Southwick Round Table and later president of Steyning & Adur Valley Rotary Club. He was a member of Pycombe Golf Club. Mrs Treadwell was chairman of Shoreham and Southwick Ladies Circle. Both are currently members of Adur Indoor Bowls Club and Southwick Bowls Club. Mr Treadwell is a well known Bridge player and a member of the Henfield Duplicate Bridge Society as well as Worthing, Shoreham and Southwick Bridge clubs. Many friends and family members, including their three children and granddaughter, were invited to celebrate at a garden party at the home which the couple designed and built for their retirement in the walled garden of the Manor House at Southwick.
