NOVEMBER 2009

Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the November edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Well, hopefully Halloween went well and we can look forward to the fire work events in the Sussex area. Lancing is having its big fireworks on the 4th November at Lancing Beach Green. Free admission. It should be loud with lots of sparkles. If you are doing your own fireworks, I hope it goes well and doesn’t frighten too many cats! I would also like to add – be safe and please do follow the Fireworks Code. We have some great plays in December. The Southwick

Our local support police article this month is particularly pertinent to parents especially in safeguarding our kids. So please read it if you can. Next month we hope to have our first gardening article from local writer and gardener. I am very much looking forward to it. It should have some great hints for everyone and even great for a novice like me. If you have any events you would like to read about in the magazine or you have participated in, please email us. We will space providing put it in the magazine. Please send it to Jess before the 12th of each month and copy to myself.

arah Jouault arrived in Shoreham one Sunday morning in October to be met by members of the Shoreham & Southwick Rotary Club at Coronation Green. Sarah is a well known triathlon competitor for Great Britain having competed in over 40 international events. She is currently cycling around Surrey & Sussex, stopping at as many Rotary Clubs as possible to collect donations in aid of four children’s charities which are being supported this year by the Rotary Clubs in the area. The charities benefitting from Sarah's efforts are; the CHASE Hospice Care, Chestnut Tree Hospice, Lodge Hill Centre and the Kilolo Secondary School in Tanzania. Photographs show Sarah with Shoreham & Southwick Rotary Club Members and Rotary President David Gordon, presenting her with a cheque to the value of £100 on Coronation Green, Shoreham. 4

ast month, Oak Grove school of Worthing, a school for special needs pupils, invited David Stringer, a member of the Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club, to show pupils how to paint and colour tiles that would be used to decorate the school’s new swimming pool surrounds. The Rotary club funded all the materials and great fun (and a fair amount of misplaced paint!) resulted in a marvelous collection of attractive and artistic tiles ready for display. Picture shows Shoreham & Southwick President, Dr David Gordon, Head of Arts teacher, Sarah Patterson and David Stringer, admiring the efforts of the pupils. November Nature FLock of Starlings

A

s the bang of fireworks and glow of bonfires light up the night sky, birds and mammals fattened themselves up on an assortment of berries and nuts for the winter months ahead. Enjoy Guy Fawkes Night but remember to check bonfires before lighting them as these are often warm and attractive places for hibernating hedgehogs as well as amphibians and reptiles.

Wildlife Watching – Hedehogs When it gets very cold hedgehogs begin their winter sleep until the following March or April depending on the severity of the winter, but hedgehogs can only successfully hibernate if they have sufficient fat reserves and are fit enough. During hibernation their body temperature drops and their heart beat falls dramatically - from 190 to about 20 beats per minutes. As a common suburban visitor, hedgehogs often make their winter bed in our gardens - under piles of leaves, logs, or in the compost heap. Those seen out late in the year will need extra help - leave out water and suitable food such as cat food. 6 INSIDE 1109.indd 6

This month is the start of one of winter's natural highlights – the cloud-like formation of huge numbers of starlings as they congregate at dusk before settling at their roosting site. Starlings are gregarious birds and often feed in flocks during winter. As the afternoon light fades individual flocks unite to make a progressively larger mass of birds that swirls and swoops to their night time roost. One of the most famous places in Sussex to witness their dazzling aerial display is on Brighton seafront as starlings roost on both the Palace and West Pier. One of the best ways to help wildlife in Sussex is in your own garden or green space.

Gardening Tips • Help the birds by hanging bird feeders and filling birdbaths but make sure they are clean and free of ice • Try and leave perennials un-cut for as long as possible as they provide food and shelter • Create overwintering sites for a range of animals including leaf or log piles for hibernating mammals, reptiles and insects

Moonshine to Stardust

t

hiS iS a difficult show to describe, but if you are a fan of good old fashioned variety, then this is definitely for you. ‘The Roaring Twenties’ was a great age of popular entertainment. In the

8 INSIDE 1109.indd 8

theatres people were entertained by Vaudeville acts and radio was the must have item of the day. From the mighty pen of P.G. Wodehouse we discovered Jeeves and Bertie Wooster and for the younger

generation A.A. Milne brought to life Winnie-thePooh and his adventures in The Hundred Acre Wood. Above all it was the age of the cinema and we were introduced to the likes of Rudolf Valentino and Charlie

Chaplin. Amusement, fun and lightness were cultivated in jazz and dancing, in defiance of the horrors of World War I, which remained present in people's minds. Moonshine to Stardust captures the essence of that decade beginning naturally in 1920 and proceeds year by year to a climactic 1929. This fact based show uses material only written or performed in this wonderful 10 year period. A lively show with sketches, music, comedy, dance and monologues all interconnected with a plethora of facts and figures, more than enough to satisfy any history buff in this delightful look at the Jazz Era. ‘The 1920’s was a fantastic era’ said writer and director Len Shipton. ‘No decade of the 20th century had as much distinctive flavour and atmosphere. A period of social, artistic, and cultural dynamism the likes of which have not been seen since.’ Len has produced this play before and it was such a success that he has been itching to stage it again. Also an award winning set designer, Len is current holder of the Brighton & Hove Arts Council Drama Award for Best Set, so expect to see a little of his magic worked on this set too.

Catch this family show from 9th - 12th December at The Barn Theatre, Southwick. The Beach Café

T

his month’s restaurant review is definitely one for the families. The Beach Café situated a stone’s throw from the beach at Shoreham reopened over the Summer under new ownership. This is very much a family run business – the day we visited owner Sean was in the kitchen with sister Tara and Mum working alongside. Head Chef Jason was also there who is clearly a long time family friend making the whole set up one of the friendliest establishments I have visited in a long time. I went for lunch on a sunny, warm Autumn day with my sister and both our young daughters. We parked in a free bay right outside the establishment and walked into a delightful, airy space. The children headed straight for the fishtank table (the fish have all been adopted by and named after various children of the owners and owners’ friends) and then proceeded to generally run amok throughout the course of our visit. We were made to feel completely comfortable, Sean occasionally pointed out the limits (such as jumping on the furniture in case they knocked any of the artwork off the wall or bumped their heads) and bashing the fishtank with a spoon so as not to scare the fish – which only added to our ease as we knew that it was genuine and while they had no qualms in telling us when the line was crossed they were generally happy to have happy children in the place. 10

INSIDE 1109.indd 10

They serve good café food as it should be. Healthy, wholesome, tasty meals with no pretence and bags of flavour. There are chips on the menu but not with everything, in fact not with many things. They have a selection of fillings that can be used in a sandwich, baguette, wrap or jacket potato then they have a range of daily specials and a selection of homemade soups. On the day we visited the specials board had a selection which included Thai Green Curry, Beef Bourgignon, chicken dansak and a broccoli and cheese bake. There were 5 different soups available including chilli bean and lentil (with optional bacon), chicken broth, roasted pumpkin and squash (also with optional bacon), cream of parsnip, potato and cumin and cream of stilton and celery. It was so refreshing to see more than one “soup of the day” option. I regularly opt for soup for lunch as a light but warming option and get quite disappointed when most places only offer one – more often than not the one offering will be exactly the type I don’t fancy. On the day in question my sister opted for the Chicken Thai Green Curry while I had the Chicken broth. The curry was excellent – deliciously creamy with just the right amount of carefully balanced spices, the broth was what a broth should be – wholesome, hearty and bursting with flavour and warmth making the world seem a more cuddly place than usual.

Their food is locally sourced and organic where possible. They even hand pick the pigs they like the look of from a friend’s farm in Buckinghamshire ensuring that they really do know the full story behind the meat they are serving and can be fully confident that the customer will be hard pressed to find a better sausage in the area The Beach Café has a diverse range of customers. The day that we were in there was the day after ITV’s This Morning crew had finished filming a garden makeover round the corner – for a week the place had been overrun with media darlings and their crew. Earlier that day they had had a couple of famous middleweight boxers in for lunch and while we were there we shared the friendly vibes with a couple of local builders, a few ladies lunching with their toddlers and an elderly couple having tea and cake (from 2.30 – 4.30 every day they give away free tea to go with their delicious cakes). They are beginning to build up a roaring local trade from residents especially for their breakfasts and Sunday roasts (£6.95 ppn). From November they will even deliver their excellent Sunday roasts free of charge to homes on Shoreham Beach. The place is equally good as a retreat from the beach when the sun or rain has beaten you or as a destination venue in its own right when you want good food in a friendly environment. It’s what a café should be – a fun, welcoming place to eat and drink in good company. They have WiFi and a PC so that you can stay in contact with the outside world while enjoying freshly made smoothies and lovely food. They don’t currently have an alcohol license but are happy for you to bring your own. They are open from 8pm – 6pm at the moment but are starting to do regular themed evening specials which are guaranteed to go down a storm. Call or email Sean for details. The only flaw I could really find with this place was the lack of baby change facilities which was surprising for such a child-friendly place. But then, when your car’s probably parked right outside it’s a small price to pay for such a family friendly, laid back and fun experience.

Do you REALLY know where your kids are? o

ver the LaSt few months of this year, Adur has experienced large gatherings of young people. These groups are using Social Networking sites such as, BEBO, Twitter and Face book, to advertise their intent to gather in a particular area in Adur. They are travelling from Littlehampton, Worthing, Brighton, Steyning, Henfield and other areas. We have experienced groups in excess of 100 young people, many of them under the influence of alcohol. The age range is 13-18 years, and as you can imagine this amount of youths; in high spirits, drunk and in such large numbers is presenting us with many problems. The community impact is increasing with respect to anti social behaviour, litter and fear of crime. Commonly, when dealing with these groups we find out that the kids are, apparently, sleeping over at a friend’s house. More often than not, the parent/s of that child has not made the phone call to the parent who is hosting the sleepover. When ‘the sleep over check is not done, you ‘the parent’ are unaware where or what your child is doing. Very often when we have a drunk child; and a phone call is made

12 INSIDE 1109.indd 12

home, the parent or parents are out for the night or have already had a few drinks at home and are unable to attend the site of the gathering to pick up their child. Sussex Police are then left with inebriated children who then have to be returned home in Police vehicles. This takes officers away from their more important duties. Sussex Police are now at a point where preventative action must be taken. Your child may well be stopped as they arrive in Adur. Searches for alcohol will be done early. You, the parents, will be contacted, and no regard will be given to the fact that you are otherwise engaged socially. You will be expected to collect your child by whatever means is safe even if this means you have to pay for a taxi. As a parent of a 15 year old, I have to make those, ‘sleep over’ phone calls. This causes embarrassment to my child, and I am accused of being, ‘SAD’, but I know where they are and am confident that the recipient parent is clear that my child is not allowed out beyond a certain time in the evening. The majority of parents are doing the checks and making sure their children

are safe but there are parents that are not doing enough to ensure the safety of their children. Recently, we were aware of such a gathering on Adur Rec. We were well prepared for the arrival of the kids. A lot of alcohol was confiscated early, which resulted in only one call home to a parent to collect their child. Speaking to that parent we ascertained that she knew her 15 year old daughter was in Shoreham by Sea but she didn’t know her child had alcohol. We are aware that "young male adults attend the location knowing females are under the influence of alcohol and are potentially vulnerable and are therefore targeted. This increases the possibility of becoming a victim of crime and more specifically a sexual offence". This was explained to the mother, with our concerns that her daughter was making herself extremely vulnerable attending such gatherings whilst under the influence of alcohol. Sussex Police will continue to deal with these groups in a most vigilant manner and we will continue to do our job, but we must ask parents to support us in our efforts.

SHOREHAM HEARING CENTRE

A New Service for the Hard of Hearing

A recent look around our town shows signs of resilience to the recent economic developments with new shops and businesses opening. We are pleased to announce that another new business is starting, especially for those suffering from hearing problems. Shoreham Hearing Centre has opened for business and our family run practice is keen to help all those with hearing difficulties. Those of you who have tried hearing instruments before with limited success, and those of you who have noticed a gradual deterioration in your hearing and perhaps have a member of your family giving you a few hints and nudges! We know you’re out there and are keen to help you. The last decade has seen major changes in technology with the age of digital and this applies no less to hearing devices than anything else. Just as televisions have high definition and many different channels and programme options, hearing devises now offer more flexibility for dispensers to ‘tailor make’ your prescription fit your needs and offer more additional features to help you cope with many different and challenging listening situations whether you are working or retired, busy and active or leading a quieter life. If appearance (or non appearance!) of hearing devices is important to you then we have more styles and solutions than ever before. Shoreham Hearing Centre is a private practice diagnosing hearing loss and recommending appropriate treatment including hearing devices. Cathy Colclough is our dispenser and she has many years experience both in the NHS and private sector. “In the mid 90’s I was working in research for a leading manufacturer on the first generation of digital devices. It was so exciting to be able to offer real hope of better hearing but even then we had no idea of the advances a decade would bring! The digital age has grown up around me and now as dispenser with my own business, I am free to offer the best independent advice to my clients based on all those years of working with NHS hearing devices, the research & development work and what I see now as cutting edge technology. There is something to suit all needs and budgets out there now and I am excited to be able to help.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Low rates predicted to continue a

reCent foreCaSt by The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) believes the Bank of England base rate will remain at its current 0.5% level until 2011 and not reach 2% until 2014. This would be good for borrowers, but on the downside, they also predict that the Government will introduce higher taxes and spending cuts. The interest rate decisions are made each month by the Bank of England Monetary Policy committee (MPC). They take many factors into account, but one main focus is the control of inflation. This is measured by a number of indices, The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is used by the Bank of England when they set the interest rates. The CPI literally monitors the price of a basket of goods bought for consumption by households in the UK. They do this by checking around 120,000 prices each month from a wide range of shops across the UK, both online and with actual visits. They also monitor over 6000 households to see what they actually buy. These households include pensioners, families and single people, a real cross section, all with differing spending habits and needs. This gives them an average cross section of goods so that they can ‘weight’ the basket accordingly. Once they have the above figures, they combine these and average them out. This means that the actual inflation figure quoted does not relate exactly to any one particular household, it is a cross section. So, your household’s experience of the price increases or decreases could and will be totally different from others. Also, people tend to notice price changes to items they buy regularly. Food and petrol are typical examples. However, items they buy only every now and then are not so noticeable, for example clothes or electrical goods, which have also apparently been reducing in price. So, although the Bank of England use the CPI figure to make interest rate decisions, the inflation figure should not be taken literally when relating to your own budget. If you are interested in calculating your own, there is a personal inflation calculator which can be accessed by logging onto www.statistics.gov.uk/pic. This should give you a true picture of your own situation.

Predictions for inflation The Consumer Prices Index — the government’s target inflation measure dipped to an annual rate of 1.1% in September, down from 1.6% in August. The Bank of England is targeted to keep inflation below 2%, but not less than

1%. If either situation occurs, the Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, has to write a letter of explanation to the Chancellor. The prices are measured on a rolling twelve month basis, so as long as there aren’t significant drops over the next few months, the annualised rate is predicted to stabilise and perhaps start increasing. Gymnastic experience a

t WiCkerS gymnaStiCS Club play and fun are an essential part of all the childrens gymnastics experience. At Wickers the childrens experience of gymnastics brings many rewards, children learn how their bodies move, how to socialise with other children and enjoy the thrill of achieving new skills. There’s nothing children of all ages like better than tumbling around on soft mats, bouncing on the trampoline, swinging on the bars and balancing on the beam. They offer all of this in a very safe environment. At Wickers Gymnastics Club children build strength, develop coordination, learn social skills, make new friends, develop valuable listening skills and the ability to follow verbal instruction, all whilst having great fun. Wickers Gymnastics Club has been running for over 20 years and recently moved to the only dedicated gymnastics facility in the Adur District. The Club holds the prestigious Gymmark/ClubMark accreditation from

British Gymnastics, which recognises the club as ‘safe, effective and child friendly’. All coaches are British Gymnastics qualified, hold CRB checks, child protection certificates and have basic first aid training. They offer an extensive programme of preschool gymnastics, junior gymnastics, competitive gymnastics,

trampolining and adult gymnastics and adult dance. Classes take place throughout the week and at the weekend. Gymnasts also follow the British Gymnastics badge scheme. They can also host your childs birthday party! For more information visit their website – www.wickersgymclub.com or telephone Katy on 01273 465554.

Sir Harry Ricardo o

ne SuCCeSSfuL Company that has been part of Shoreham’s history since the early 20th century is Ricardo plc. It’s founder, Sir Harry Ricardo was an important pioneer in the history of the internal combustion engine. Sir Harry Ricardo was born in 1885. at Bedford Square London. He had an interest in mechanical engines from a young age and as a child was given his own workshop, building his first engine there at the age of twelve. In 1898 Ricardo was sent to Rugby school, where he fascination with engines continued. He designed and built many including, at the age of seventeen, pumping engine for his family’s Sussex home. Ricardo moved on study at Trinity College, Cambridge. By the time he had finished his undergraduate degree in 1906, he had designed both two-cylinder and four-cylinder cars. At twenty one he filed his first patent, and in 1908 his ‘Two-Stroke Engine Company’ started to make and sell a car called The Dolphin fitted with the engine he had designed. This engine also proved extremely popular among Shoreham fishermen who used it to power their boats, as it was very reliable at low speeds. Upon his graduation, Ricardo went to work in his grandfather’s engineering company, designing specialised mechanical equipment to be used by civil engineers. In the First World War he was employed by the Mechanical Warfare Department, improving the design of tanks and other military vehicles. In 1915 Harry Ricardo formed Engine Patents Ltd, the company that is today Ricardo plc. The Royal Naval Air Service then asked him to design a device to allow tanks to be positioned on railway trucks. As he worked on this project, Ricardo found many problems with the tank engine itself and worked to solve those too. The new engine he created for the tank radically improved its performance and irradicated the problem of billowing smoke emissions which were giving away its battlefield positions. The same improved engine, as

24 INSIDE 1109.indd 24

well as being fitted into 8000 tanks, was used to power generators in hospials and army camps. This success enabled Ricardo to buy to the land at Shoreham near the Old Toll Bridge where his company remains based today. In 1918 the Air Ministry appointed Ricardo as a consulting engineer for aircraft engines. In 1923 he published ‘The Internal Combustion Engine’ and developed both the single-cylinder variable pressure engine, and a rating system for fuels. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1929. In the Second World War, Harry Ricardo moved on to working on Sir Frank Whittle’s jet engine, as well as inproving the engines of the RAF’s Mosquito aircraft. He was also at this time on the War Cabinet’s engineering advisory committee. Ricardo became President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1944 . He was knighted in 1948 for his work developing the internal combustion engine.

Ricardo was internationally was renowned for his research into the problem of knock in engines. Car manufacturers Vauhall, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Fiat and Citroën all at some point used his engine designs in their vehicle manufacture. His other achievements included designing diesel engines for cars, trains and planes, and improving petrol quality. He designed an engine for London buses that halved their fuel consumption. This method of making fuel last longer was also a crucial factor in allowing Alcock and Brown to make the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic by aircraft in 1919. A number of Ricardo’s engineering applications and derivatives of his original designs are still in production today. Sir Harry Ricardo died in 1974 at the age of 89, and today his company to continue his ground breaking and innovative work. Judy Upton To advertise call: 01273 452065 23/10/2009 14:33

The Merry Widow Operetta in three acts by Franz Lehar

S

he’s beautiful! She’s rich! And if she can just get that playboy Danilo to propose, she’ll be deliriously happy too! And so will Zeta, the Ambassador of Pontevedro. Why? Because Hanna Glawari, the Merry Widow, is his nation’s wealthiest

citizen. And if she is lured away by some Frenchman, she’ll take all her lovely money with her, causing a financial meltdown of epic proportion. Time to institute a romantic stimulus plan! Flirtations and assignations fly, swept along

by Lehar’s magical score. The famous “Vilja” song, the “Merry Widow Waltz” and more! Come and enjoy the glorious music you know so well. Southwick Opera are proud to present one of the world’s most popular operettas, Franz Lehar’s THE

MERRY WIDOW in a new production directed and conducted by SIMON GRAY. Using an up-to-date translation by Jeremy Sams, the cast of this production is headed by soprano KAREN ORCHIN in the title role with ROB PIATT as the playboy, Danilo. YVONNE FAIR is Valencienne with MARTIN CLARKE as her husband, Baron Zeta. WILLIAM REVELS is Cascada and ANDY HUTCHISON is St Brioche, two Frenchmen eager to marry the widow for her millions. Newcomers to Southwick Opera are tenor WEIHSI HU as Camille and actor GUY DUDENEY as Njegus. Choreographer JODIE HARROP will bring her usual magical flair to the production which boasts beautiful Art Nouveau scenery designed by BARRY HINCHLIFFE with lighting design by MIKE MEDWAY. Backed by the Southwick Opera Chorus, Dancers and Orchestra this lavish production of THE MERRY WIDOW promises to be a show not to be missed. Performances are at the Barn Theatre in Southwick from 9th to 14th November, nightly at 7.30pm.

Sunshine Day Nursery

a

neW ChiLdren’S nursery opened in Shoreham recently for children aged three months to five years. The nursery is situated at the old police station at 6 Tarmount Lane, Shoreham and the building has been completely re-vamped to accommodate up to 43 children per day. Nursery Proprietor, Steven Cox says “The building had been boarded up for a while and the process of bringing it back to life has been an exciting one. We are particularly proud of the outside play space which was carefully planned by local garden designer, Caroline Baker. A Brighton artist also painted a wonderful woodland scene mural, and the children are really enjoying lots of time playing outside”.

The nursery employs staff fully trained in Early Years childcare, including a Nursery Teacher who ensures that the nursery deliver high standards of care and learning opportunities to all the children. Nursery Manager, Alison Wolke says “Opening a new nursery in Shoreham has been an exciting time for us, many parents previously had to travel to other areas for childcare. Each week more and more families are coming to us as they find our central Shoreham location very convenient”.

To find out more about the nursery, visit their website at www.sunshine-nursery.com. Alison, the nursery manager can be contacted on 01273 441912, or email alison.wolke@sunshine-nursery.com
