tand by for murder and mayhem in the award-winning Wick Theatre Company’s latest production. Popcorn, by Ben Elton is a satirical comedy thriller, tense, exciting and violent. Suitable for adult audiences only, it contains strong language and sexual references. This is Wick’s entry for the Brighton and Hove Arts

Council Drama Awards 2009. Performances run from Wednesday October 7 to Saturday October 10 at 7.45pm. Venue is the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick. Tickets cost £8.50 for Wednesday and Thursday, and £9.00 for Friday and Saturday. They are available from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online at: www. wicktheatre.co.uk

Bruce Delamitri (Bob Ryder), a famous film director, makes very violent but stylish movies. His latest epic, Ordinary Americans has been nominated for an Oscar, and as Popcorn opens he and his producer, Karl Brezner (John Garland), are deciding which clip from the film should be shown at that evening’s awards ceremony. Wayne (Guy Steddon) and Scout (Anna Quick) are young psychopaths on a killing spree. Desperate to meet their hero Bruce, the pair break into his luxurious

Beverley Hills pad during the Oscar presentation. Bruce returns in the company of Brooke Daniels (Amanda Urwin-Mann), a nude model and actress, and they disturb him in the middle of a passionate episode. They want more than an autograph from their cinematic idol - Wayne intends to use Bruce’s “art” as justification for murder, and a terrible siege begins. Events are soon disrupted, however, first by Karl, who needs to discuss some adverse publicity. Then Farrah (Zoë Edden), Bruce’s estranged wife arrives to talk about the upcoming divorce, and with her is Velvet (Sophie Lane), their spoilt teenage daughter. In spite of all this, Wayne means to succeed, whatever the cost, and plans to have maximum publicity with a report on national TV. Eventually Bill and Kirsten (Tom Harris and Allegra Drury), a small camera crew, are let in. The play will be directed by newcomer Steve Gallant, who has already made his name locally with his atmospheric music composed especially for Wick’s Richard III. He won a prize for this in last year’s BHAC Drama Awards. Wick’s winning streak: Not only did the Company carry off the cup for Best Overall Production for Richard III in 2008, but was recently awarded an Accolade of Excellence by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) for Abigail’s Party, performed earlier this year. 7

iked Goodfellas? Loved The Sopranos? Then Southwick Players performance of Rick Cleveland’s murderous satire, Jerry & Tom, may very well appeal. And it’s the UK Premiere by an amateur society from one of the cowriters of Six Feet Under and The West Wing. Jerry (Andy Hutchison) and Tom (“H” Reeves) are car salesmen. They seem like a couple of regular guys but share a dark secret. Tom moonlights as a contract killer and Jerry is his willing apprentice. Their bosses are a gang of Chicago mobsters rumoured to have had some involvement in the Kennedy assassinations. Armed with the tricks of the trade, Jerry is itching for some action, but the trigger-happy kid has one more lesson to learn ...life as a hitman can be a killer. Director "H" Reeves says "I am fully committed to, and excited by the script, which is razor sharp, and very, very black in tone. As

Jerry and Tom the title might suggest it is cartoonish and funny, but in an instant can switch to the darkest hue. Trust me when I say it's a bit of a shocker". This will be The Southwick Players entry in the Brighton & Hove Arts Council Drama Awards this year, a competition that has secured them numerous awards. Described as “Stylish and

darkly comic” this comedy is not the usual festival entry and has pushed many boundaries for the actors involved. Performance start at 7.45pm at The Barn Theatre in Southwick. Ticket Prices vary. Super saver deal £8.00 on Tuesday 22nd September. Wednesday 23rd - Saturday 26th September £9.00.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Mortgage Market — where are we now? R

ecently the Bank of England voted to keep their base rate at 0.5%. The rate has been at this all time low for five months now, having been reduced from 1% on 5th March 2009. It is strange to think that only one year ago the rate stood at 5%. The low rates are now starting to show through in statistics, the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has announced today that the number of repossessions fell in the second quarter of the year, and cases of arrears have levelled off. It seems that the low rates are now having a positive effect. Bank of England figures show that mortgage approvals in June were up from the previous month. In May the number of approvals was 44,169 rising to 47,584 in June. This is the highest number since April 2008, and is also the fifth month in a row that approvals have risen. Nationwide’s house price index showed the average price of a property rise by 1.3% in July to £158,870 from £156,442 in June. Prices have also risen by a cumulative 1.3% year to date. They have even suggested that there is a ‘reasonable chance’ that house prices will end the year higher than they started, as the July index shows a third monthly rise.

time, money and stress in the long run. So, if you need a mortgage, my message is this; Find an independent adviser who knows the market and can deal with your mortgage for you. Not only will you get the best deal, but we will chase the mortgage through to offer and completion and answer any questions you have on the way.

If you need independent advice on mortgages or any other financial matter, for a free initial consultation call me Claire Cook and my team on 01273 224667. We would be happy to help. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. If you prefer to pay a fee for advice this option is available, the exact amount of the fee will depend on circumstances but we estimate it will be 0.5% of the loan amount. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

…there is a ‘reasonable chance’ that house prices will end the year higher than they started… Are lenders lending? The answer is yes, but they are still being very choosy. They are reserving their best rates for those with large deposits. There is some flexibility in lending policy, but it is really important to deal with the right lender for your situation. An independent adviser can research the market on your behalf and deal with any hurdles the lender may put in your way. Not only has the credit crunch affected lending policy, it has also affected the service and turn round times of many lenders. If they have a good deal or different lending criteria they can find themselves inundated and unable to cope. This means you may have a long wait for your mortgage offer. So, if you want the best rate then you may need a high dose of patience! If you deal with an independent adviser at least we will be doing the chasing for you. If you are a busy person, or you don’t understand the process this can save you a lot of

Potter’s Museum Of Curiosity I

n Victorian times Bramber was a popular day trip destination by train. The platform of the station even had to be lengthened to cope with the long trains of weekend visitors coming down the Horsham line from London. One of the big attractions on everyone’s itinerary was Walter Potter’s Museum of Curiosity, which remained in the heart of Bramber until the 1970s. Potter’s museum or ‘The Cat’s Museum’ as it was sometimes known locally was a collection of stuffed animals as well as other weird and sometimes macabre exhibits. Taxidermy was very popular in Victorian times and the museum thronged with school children in the school holidays. A message from our PCSOs D

og fouling has always been a priority problem at Neighbourhood Panel Meetings. Something had to be done. PCSO Heaton and PCSO Knight joined forces with the Adur Council to produce a poster designed by local children to put up all around Adur advertising the new Dog Control orders that came into force in April this year. These posters are designed to encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs. After all, it is not the dogs fault, but that of the owners. Children too, taking their dogs for a walk should also be educated to clear up. A competition was arranged in conjunction with local schools, and the winning poster is shown here.

Crime Reduction Continues in the Adur District The Adur District continues to be a very safe place to live with the latest figures detailing crime reduction in four priority crime areas since the beginning of April. The most significant decrease is in burglary which has seen a 55.3% reduction, vehicle crime has been reduced by 6.5% and criminal damage down by 7.3%. Sussex Police has a target of reducing crime by 3% in the forthcoming financial year. Currently Adur has an overall crime reduction of 18.9% which equates to 160 fewer victims since April in comparison to last year statistics thereby being a top performing District within Sussex Police. Operation Respect has been extremely successful during recent

years in the reduction of crime and will be continuing during the summer months. Since the beginning of June the Adur Neighbourhood Response Teams and Neighbourhood Policing Teams have had street intervention with 80 members of the public and have seized over 40 litres of alcohol from local youths which clearly assists in reducing anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

SUSSEX POLICE ADUR - HELP US TO HELP YOU! Community Messaging System – CMS Here in Adur Sussex Police are calling for members of the public to take part in this new initiative. CMS, is a way of updating the public of an incident and what police action was taken. The system is also to be used to appeal for information in areas where incidents have occurred. The system contacts a single resident in a road where an incident has taken place. Our command team will send an email. The recipient will only get a message about an issue that relates to their road or adjacent road. The message might read from Adur police – “an incident took place in your road last night and a 17 year old has been arrested” or “a burglary took place in your road early hours of today – did you see or hear anything”. You have nothing more to do than read the email received. We would like you to share this information with your

Please mention Inside Shoreham & Southwick when responding to adverts

neighbours. ‘Word of mouth’ works so well! We want to spread the news of our success stories as well as asking for your help. New drop-in centre in Southwick A

new drop-in centre in the heart of Southwick is set to open its doors this September as AOPN secures funds for a regular meeting point for older people in the area. The long-awaited drop-in centre will meet weekly on Mondays and offer a range of activities for the over 60s, including arts, crafts and gentle exercise. Members of the Community Partnership Team will also be on hand offering financial, health and well-being advice, and information about local voluntary services and clubs. “We ran a gaps analysis and the survey revealed that some 91% of older people wanted a regular ‘drop-in’

where they could go for information and advice,” explains AOPN’s Peter Hornsby who initiated the project. “Now that we have secured the funds and David Griffiths, AOPN’s Business Development Officer has drawn up a working constitution, we’re all set to go in September. “ Publicity for the new dropin will focus on Southwick, Shoreham and Fishersgate, and include coverage in the local press and broadcast media. “There’s nothing like personal recommendation however,” says AOPN Publicity Officer, Liz Trundle. “We’re hoping that everyone involved in supporting and helping older people will use

this information and spread the word before and after launch day.”
