Free English Lessons Get off that Sofa a great success

A group of foreign nationals living in Shoreham and Adur have completed a five week course of FREE English lessons with English Language Homestays and were delighted with their progress, presenting their tutor with a bouquet of flowers. The Shoreham based international language school, English Language Homestays, offered five weeks of two hour lessons to foreign nationals living in Shoreham and the Adur District to help with work and every day English conversation, CV writing, interview preparation and more. Feedback from all of the students has been very positive with, Sylvia Prifornova, commenting: “I have learnt so much, I feel much more confident now in speaking English to other people.” Jackie Verrall Managing Director of English Language Homestays, comments: “As an International Language School based in the Adur district our focus is normally on visiting foreign students, so we are delighted to be able to use our expertise to support some of our local community. “All of the people who took up our free lessons have made great strides in their conversational English speaking and writing. We look forward to running more courses in the New Year.”

Look out for the elderly this winter West Sussex County Council is urging communities to check on their more vulnerable residents this winter, especially with Christmas approaching. The County Council has come up with some suggestions for what people can do to help keep themselves and their families warm, healthy and safe. Top tips for winter include: wash your hands regularly to stop viruses from spreading; eat regular hot meals and drinks for warmth and energy; electric kettles are among the most energy-hungry appliances in the home so only boil just the amount of water you need; keep lids on pans to cook more quickly and reduce condensation and mould growth. Let any damp air out briefly for the same reasons; and if you live in an area at risk of flooding make sure you sign up for free flood alerts. Prepare for Winter webpages are available on the County Council website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ getreadyforwinter Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Peter Catchpole said: 4

“With the colder weather and darker nights now upon us, we all need to be alert and look out for others in our communities, for example, checking that elderly or disabled neighbours are safe and well as the winter gets properly underway.” West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is also encouraging residents to make sure older relatives and neighbours have a working smoke alarm in their home. Meanwhile, the County Council is urging all at risk people not to put off getting the flu jab and to get vaccinated now. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

A New Year Review F IRSTLY A HAPPY and prosperous new year to Inside Shoreham Magazine readers. This time of year we traditionally take stock, review and try to improve things. We give up bad habits and start new ones, it’s a fresh start, a new perspective, out with the old and in with the new! We apply this to many areas of our lives; doing more exercise, joining the gym, diets and giving up the booze. Some things last and some things sadly fall by the wayside, but we like to try! To make a lasting improvement, it may be good to look at your finances. Are you over spending? Are you saving? What are you wasting money your hard earned money on? Maybe you are earning well and aren’t worried about your finances, in that case, are you making the most of your savings and investments?

To make a lasting improvement, it may be good to look at your finances. Are you over spending? Are you saving? What are you wasting money your hard earned money on? We all encounter financial products such as mortgages, pensions, life cover, credit cards and investments, but that doesn’t mean we are experts. Normally no one teaches us about these things, and the only other way to learn is through experience. There are now TV programmes which dip into it, and of course, the internet, but this may give us fragmented information which can be quite often confusing. A good idea may be to enlist some professional help. Literally all you have to do is get your paperwork together and visit an independent financial adviser. They will be able to sort through the paperwork and suggest clearing anything which is no longer required. They can get up to date information directly from the companies you are with and then assess what you already have and make sure your plans are still up to date and relevant to you and your objectives. Once the information is to hand and your adviser knows your situation and goals for the future they will be able to advise you. This could involve leaving all as is because your planning still meets your needs or moving pension money, remortgaging to a different lender, realigning your life cover, or a combination 6

of these things. The important thing is to make sure your hard earned money is working for you, both now and in the future. At Talk Money, you can keep up to date with your finances our online client system, Clientweb. This allows you instant access to your own personal client file. You can look at all your plans, important paperwork and values, all in one place and at the touch of a button. If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I am offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham Magazine readers. Please call me on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. TWELFTH NIGHT CELEBRATIONS

I

IN LOCAL VICTORIAN TIMES

N VICTORIAN TIMES as well as celebrating Christmas Day and New Year, people in Shoreham and Southwick would have taken part in special celebrations to mark Twelfth Night. Traditionally Twelfth Night marks the arrival of the three kings or wise men in Bethlehem to bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Twelfth Night falls on the 6th January. Our Victorian forebears would have visited our local bakeries to purchase Twelfth Night Cakes, or possibly made their own. A cake could cost anything from a few shillings to several guineas. The most extravagant might be shaped like a fort or a ship, and decorated with sentinels and flags. Cooked inside the cake was a dried bean and whoever found it in their slice would be Twelfth Night King for the evening’s festivities. If a pea was also in the cake, then this would make its finder Twelfth Night Queen. The local toy shop or gift shop would stock packs of Twelfth Night cards, which contained cards with pictures of an entire royal court on them. Cards were not for a game, but were shuffled and distributed to the members of the household face down. Then you looked at your card, which could be of anyone from a minister, attendant or maid of honour, and that would be your role for the rest of the night. At least it elegantly solved the problem of who would be doing the washing up. Sweets and favours were also distributed among the Twelfth Night party guests. Sweets were traditionally made from orange or lemon rind and barley sugar and presented as gifts in little tins. Sugared almonds and sugarplums were also popular. Sugarplums did not contain actual plums, which were of course out of season at Christmas, though they were shaped like the fruit. They were in fact made of boiled sugar and had an aniseed or caraway seed at their centre. Twelfth Night is also the last day of Christmas and so the decorations, garlands, greenery, cards and trees would need to be taken down on that day, to guard against bad luck for the New Year.

10

The day before Twelfth Night had a title of its own – Twelfth Night Eve. For centuries it was associated with the fertility of animals and crops. Men would go out into an orchard to sing and walk about the trees. Slices of bread or toast were laid at the roots and sometimes tied to branches, while cider was poured over the tree roots. The ceremony was said to bless the trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming season. In 1967 the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men revived the tradition locally. Livestock could form part of Twelfth Night Eve rustic rituals. A large cake with a hole in it would be baked. This would then, after many toasts of ale, be put onto the horn of the farm’s finest ox. The ox was then tickled to make it throw off the cake. Depending on where the cake landed, in front of or behind the animal, decided who received the cake as a prize. Fires were also often lit on Twelfth Day Eve: twelve small ones and one large, to represent Jesus and the apostles. January 5th. was also known as Old Christmas Eve. Before Pope Gregory reformed the calendar in 1582, the old Julian calendar (introduced by Julius Caesar) was based on a year being made up of 365 and a quarter days. It overestimated the length of the year by just over eleven minutes, so by the sixteenth century the calendar was ten days out. By 1751 when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in England, it was eleven days out, with Christmas falling on January 6th, which of course with the new calendar became Twelfth Night. Many of us are aware that Boxing Day is also known as St Stephen’s Day – the day of the Feast Of Stephen, mentioned in the carol ‘Good King Wenceslas. Then December 27th is St. John’s Day, the 28th is Holy Innocent’s Day, and the 29th St. Thomas A Beckett’s Day. All the other days of Christmas up to the 5th of January celebrate a different saint or saints too. When finally the midnight chimes sound upon Twelfth Night, Christmas is truly over for another year. Judy Upton

BITE THE BULLET AND EXPERIMENT

W

ELL WE’RE HERE again, at the start of another New Year, so happy New Year to you all. At the time of writing this I have no clue if you will be reading this stuck in 6 inches of snow, sitting in bright sunlight, or suffering from pouring rain and stormy winds. I guess that’s what makes working in the garden interesting, and if we

12

have learnt anything over the last few years with the diverse weather we have had, it should be that no matter what gets thrown at the garden, it will survive the worst that can be thrown at it, and adapt. Whether that means you’ve lost one of your favourite tress last year, in the storms and are now getting pleasure from something new planted in its place, or everything has thrived on the wet weather we had, and you had a bumper display of fruit or flowers It’s worth taking that lesson and applying it to what you do in the garden. A lot of time gets spent thinking and umming and erring about putting a plant in a certain position or moving a plant from another place. Probably far too much time in fact. We often get clients asking us similar questions. Plants are natural survivors and it takes a lot to kill them off. Most things you do in your garden are an experiment. You can look for the prefect position and read countless books offering advice, but every garden is unique, because of its position, soil, wind, sunlight… ….I could go on. The only way you will find out for sure is to bite the bullet and give it a go. If a plant doesn’t work in one place then move it. Don’t be afraid to try something different in the garden, big or small and don’t waste time thinking about it to much! The same applies to the layout of the garden itself. Some of the best results we have had in the landscaping of gardens have not been by sitting and planning out gardens to the last detail, but by experimenting and working with the client to change things around, such as a path in a different place or a seating area or stairs on another side of the garden. So if you are thinking about changing something, to make it look better, to make more space or just because you fancy a change, why not make this year the year you do it! When you walk into the garden centre next, try and be a bit daring this year and chose a plant you wouldn’t normally have, or perhaps try growing something from seed you never have before. Even if its only something small. That’s the great part of gardening, it’s your little part of the world to do with what you like and enjoy it. IS THERE A POSSIBLE LOCAL

MUSIC EVENT ON THE HORIZON? A licensing application has been made to Adur District Council for a potential new music event, which may come to Shoreham Airport in the summer of 2015.

T

HE APPLICATION, AS advertised in the local media during November, is for the provision of live/recorded music, the sale of alcohol and late night refreshments, which would support a music event in the grounds of the airport. In addition to the local press advertising, notices have been put up around the airport site. While the application makes reference to a capacity of 70,000 people, the organisers – SJM Concerts – are planning for an absolute maximum first year attendance of 35,000 people, around 10-15% fewer than the number who visited the Shoreham Airshow in 2013. As is usual with event and alcohol licences, the local Safety Advisory Group (composed of the local authorities, Sussex Police and the event organisers) have been involved with the initial proposals. Although the consultation has not yet closed, Adur Council is expecting there to be a large number of conditions placed by Sussex Police on any licence granted to ensure that the potential event does not pose disruption to the local community. If the licensing committee grants approval, the tenants and sub-tenant will be required to apply for landlords consent for the event under the terms of their leases. While the events licence being applied for would last a full year, this is standard practice around events licences. The airport has agreed to a maximum of two days per annum in order to minimise disruption to its operations.

14

Additionally, as plans for the proposed event develop, SJM Concerts will be directly contacting every household who may be affected by letter, ensuring that all local residents are fully aware of the plans and have their opportunity to make their opinions known. Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, comments: “If this goes ahead, then I am certain that the whole area will see a benefit — as it does from the Shoreham Airshow each year — thanks to the number of people who will be visiting Shoreham and perhaps staying in the surrounding area. There would also be a financial benefit to the Council in the region of £40,000 which will enable us to keep meeting some of our ambition local agendas without needing to affect Council Tax. “SJM Concerts have a vibrant track record in delivering events such as Parklife in Manchester and V Festivals around the country, as well as band specific gigs including One Direction, Oasis and Take That. “Personally, I am highly supportive of this potential new addition to the coastal cultural scene and would welcome the publicity and economic boost that it would be likely to bring.” The decision on whether to grant a licence for the event will be made at the January meeting of the Adur District Council Licencing Committee, which will be held at 19.00 on Wednesday 7th January 2015, and to which members of the public are invited to attend.

PHYSIO ADVICE

AVOID INJURY WHEN HITTING THE SLOPES Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, offers skiing advice when on the slopes.

T

HIS WINTER WILL see a lot of people heading for the slopes to ski or snowboard. Being a fast and exhilarating sport, it is also a high-risk venture for causing injuries. The sheer number of people on the slopes, weaving in and out of each other’s way is one reason alone for why injuries can occur, where people do not see danger, or cannot steer clear of harms way. Skiing and snowboarding also requires a huge amount of endurance and leg strength to be able to exercise for such long periods. Flexibility also plays an important role in being able to ski or board with good technique so that muscles can work optimally and with ease. If we don’t have the flexibility or strength to get our technique right, then the risk of getting injured becomes greater.

How can we minimize these risks?

Wear a helmet. Firstly, and most importantly wear a helmet. There have been known cases of injuries and even deaths occurring through not wearing helmets, and protecting our heads. 20 years ago when I first skied, nobody wore a helmet, nowadays; you’re a minority if you don’t. Nobody cares what

16

you look like on the slopes. Stay safe and protect your head. Do leg strengthening exercises. If you want to reduce knee injuries, then you need to build and strengthen your quads and hamstrings, which are the muscles in the front and back of your thighs. It used to be recommended that you performed static squats, with your back against a wall to strengthen your quads, but times have changed and dynamic exercises such as squats, jump squats and leg press are much more effective. Doing 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps every other day, starting a couple of months before your holiday will bring you strength benefits and reduce your risks of nasty knee ligament sprains or ruptures. Develop your core strength. Doing core strength exercises, such as planks and bridging exercises will help provide stability to your back and help you reduce your risks of injuring yourself, should you fall over during your time on the slopes. It also means your can maintain your posture for longer and helps you save energy by making you more efficient. Work on your leg flexibility. You need to have flexibility in your ankles, calves, and thigh muscles if you’re going to be able to get your weight forward onto the fronts of your skis and be able to squat. You should stretch each leg muscle group for 1-minute holds, 2-3 times per day and before and after exercise. It should be mentioned that although you can prepare yourself, there are no guarantees that you can avoid injury, and falling awkwardly to your side, with your arm outstretched or crossing your skis etc can have poor consequences, but at least with the information given you can rest assured you have done everything in your power to avoid injury and enjoy your experience to the max. It would take pages and hundreds of pictures, diagrams and videos to go through each of the exercises mentioned above. You Tube is a great place to seek videos with explanations if you require further information.
