WASSAIL AT THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON Get out of that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans (quite literally) down at the Duke of Wellington in Shoreham this Twelfth Night (6th January), where a band of costumed merry makers will attempt to revive the ancient tradition of Wassailing in their own singular style. The Wassail (‘be well’) is a drinking ritual intended to ensure a good apple harvest the following year. As well as clinking glasses of mulled cider and spiced ale, the evening will also feature traditional music and song (from The Wellington Wailers and others), a Mummers play and all sorts of peculiar customs, such as the toasting of the apple tree (you take one virgin, several slices of toast…) and the banging of drums, pots and pans. Go along and join in the silliness. Good cheer, kitchen wear and silly dress all strongly encouraged.

ONE YEAR, TWO MEN AND 273 DOGS Adur & Worthing Councils Dog Warden team have once again had a very busy year. They have collated a series of facts and figures that illustrate their tireless work on behalf of our much loved four legged community and their two legged owners. Adur & Worthing Councils Dog Wardens, Mike Barnard and Russ Akehurst have cared for 273 dogs, have reunited 232 of them with their very grateful owners and have rehomed the remaining 41 during a very busy year. 10 of the 41 dogs that were abandoned and needed rehoming were Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Six were Lurchers, four Jack Russell Terriers and the rest a mix of American Bulldogs, Huskies, Shih Tzus, Beagles, Rottweilers, German Shepherd Dogs, a Labrador, a Whippit, Yorkshire Terrier and a Collie. The Dogs Trust in Shoreham offered new homes to 21 abandoned dogs, nine were successfully adopted by local residents and the rest were looked after by the RSPCA and Vigil GSD in Surrey. Mike (a former Fireman) and Russ (a former Policeman) both love their work as Dog Wardens, and describe it as their most rewarding career choice yet, adding they are always very grateful to the members of the public who phone in to report strays. Councillor Clive Roberts, Worthing Executive Member for Environment said, “Mike and Russ should be very proud of their 100% rehousing success rate this year. They would be the first to agree that they could not achieve such impressive results without the assistance of the public, the RSPCA, The Dogs Trust & Vigil GSD Rescue, and on behalf of the Council I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to call in and help us protect lost or abandoned pets, to then either reunite them with their worried owners or rehouse them into 4

efficient and caring environments.” Councillor Keith Dollemore, Adur Executive Member for Environment added, “Our Dog Wardens team have not only looked over 270 dogs this year but they have also very successfully rehoused nine of them with new owners. Mike and Russ have facilitated and advised successfully on all of these adoptions and without their patience, skill and experience, these may well not have happened. I would urge anyone thinking of having a dog as a pet to visit the Councils’ website in the first instance, www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/dogs/ for more information and excellent advice.” There are over 9 million dogs in the UK but thanks to Mike and Russ’ hard work, the continued support of the The Dogs Trust, RSPCA & Vigil GSD Rescue and the ever vigilant residents of Adur & Worthing, the Council’s dog kennels will remain empty and our Wardens will enjoy their 100% rehousing success rate, not just for Christmas, but well into 2016. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

A New Year Review F IRSTLY A HAPPY and prosperous new year to Inside Shoreham & Southwick Magazine readers. This time of year we traditionally take stock, review and try to improve things. We give up bad habits, and start new ones, it’s a fresh start, a new perspective, out with the old and in with the new! We apply this to many areas of our lives; doing more exercise, joining the gym, diets and giving up the booze. Some things last and some things sadly fall by the wayside, but we like to try! To make a lasting improvement, it may be good to look at your finances. Are you over spending? Are you saving? What are you wasting money your hard earned money on? Maybe you are earning well and aren’t worried about your finances, in that case, are you making the most of your savings and investments? We all encounter financial products such as mortgages, pensions, life cover, credit cards and investments, but that doesn’t mean we are experts. Nobody teaches us about these things, and the only way to learn is through experience. There are now TV programmes which dip into it, and of course, the internet. But this gives us fragmented information which can often be confusing.

thing is to make sure your hard earned money is working for you, both now and in the future. If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I am offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham readers. Please call me on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. Start of a new adventure

W

ELCOME TO 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. January always seems a weird time in the garden as everything seems to be in a state of hibernation with not much going on and the weather is a big unknown. In fact that pretty much sums up the garden for most of the year. As someone once said “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!”

10

For all the planning you can do in the garden, you are at the mercy of so many variables. The weather, will it be cold, snowy, windy, wet, and sunny? The actual plants themselves; will they like the position, will they grow well, and will they grow at all and flower? I guess that’s what makes gardening such an interesting pastime. Some of us do it because we enjoy it, some because we feel we have to keep the neighbours happy, some because they want to make it a great place for the family to enjoy, and some because they want the feeling of achievement or a quiet attractive sanctuary to enjoy. The beginning of each year almost seems like the start of a new adventure. A chance to put right the mistakes we made last year, or to do the things we forgot or never got around to doing. It’s pretty much a time of new hope in the garden as regardless of how well or badly we did last year, it feels like the slate gets wiped clean, and we get a chance to start all other again, with the absolute best of intentions. We pretty much all start from the same place, so it’s up to you to see how well you can do this year. Most of us make some sort of New Year’s resolution, which probably by the time you read this has been forgotten or fallen by the wayside already. Well why not make a small list for the coming year of what you want to achieve in the garden and try and carry it through. It could be to try growing a new plant or vegetable, mow the lawn more often, or build a better compost heap. Whatever it is, keep it simple but make it something you will enjoy and can see the results of. It will give you an excuse to get out into the garden and enjoy it more and make more use it. A lot of us are fortunate to have a garden of sorts and for many it can be a wasted space, which when you think about how precious land is in our neck of the woods, it seems ridiculous to not get the most from it. So go on, give it a go this year and see what a difference it makes. For my part I’m going to keep on top of pruning my tomatoes and I am absolutely determined to grow a couple of decent edible melons in the greenhouse. But then again, it depends on so many other things, outside of my control, but I am going to give it my best shot. So what are you going to try? the core muscles as much as we should. Often, when you hear someone telling you they want to strengthen their core, they will mention exercises such as sits-ups. These exercises strengthen superficial muscles but not the core muscles, so although you might, if your lucky end up with good definition, it won’t help you avoid back pain.

5 exercises for strengthening your core Lower back pain is one of the most common problems Louis Jones sees and can be one of the most persistent and recurrent of injuries. One way we can reduce our risk of back pain, or how you can ease back pain if you are already suffering, is through core strength

Y

OUR CORE MUSCLES are the deeper muscles in your lower trunk that are designed to stabilise and protect your spine. However, due to bad habits and poor posture, we can become lazy, and therefore we do not use

How can we strengthen our core muscles?

Core muscles are designed to work all of the time, even when you’re resting, such as when you sit down, and therefore, for this to happen they need to work at a low level, so they do not fatigue and give up working. Therefore core muscles strength should be gentle, subtle in nature, with an emphasis on focusing on your breathing. This is why Pilates is so good, but ask some people about their experience of Pilates, and they may say something like: “I didn’t really feel like I was doing much”, or “I didn’t get a burn”, or “ It wasn’t energetic enough for me”. Below are five exercises that will help your strengthen your core muscles and help you reduce the risk of back pain. 1. Sitting balance on a Swiss Ball: Sit upright on a Swiss Ball, with your feet hip width apart and rest your hands on your thighs. Make sure to sit tall, and gently pull your stomach in towards your spine, whilst breathing. When you are ready, carefully pick one foot off of the floor, and try and maintain your sitting balance without rolling on your ball. Try and hold your balance for up to 30 seconds, and repeat on both sides. 2. Bridging: Lay on your back, with your knees bent, your feet resting flat on the floor and your feet about hip width apart. Push up through your hips to lift your hips off the floor, making sure to keep your back straight. Do not arch your back too far or let your hips drop on wither side. You should try and hold this position for 5 seconds and repeat the movement 10 times. 3. Superman pose: Kneel on all fours with your hands shoulder width apart, and your knees hip width apart. Keep your back and neck in a straight line. Pull your stomach in as above. Without arching or tilting your back, try to straighten one arm out horizontal to the ground and do the same behind you with your opposite leg. You should not aim to raise your arm or leg for height, but think of the movement as more of a stretching position. You should hold the pose on one side for 5 seconds, and try and repeat the movement each side up to 10 times. 4. Single leg balance: Simply stand up tall, with your feet hip width apart, and whilst pulling in your stomach muscles, try and lift one foot off the floor, so that you balance on one leg. Try and maintain a level pelvis. You should aim to balance on one leg for up to 1 minute each side. 5. Plank: This is quite an advanced exercise, done properly. Adopt a press up position on your front, but rest on your forearms and elbows, instead of on your hands. Place your feet hip width apart and rest on the balls of your toes. Try and lift your whole body off the floor, just resting on your forearms, elbows and feet. Hold this position for as long as you can, before you start to drop your hips or you begin to shake. Avoid back pain with these simple exercises that can be performed daily. If you would like more information about cores strength or back pain prevention, feel free to call me on 01273467614 or info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065

‘Know the Crown & Anchor in Shoreham?’ ‘That’s a bit upmarket for you, isn’t it?’ ‘I’m a rich man these days, Detective Superintendent. I’ll be here for another thirty minutes.’ Shoreham Harbour was a major port at the western extremity of Brighton. A village that had long since grown into an annexe to the city was spread along it. The Crown & Anchor pub, with its outside terrace overlooking the harbour, had one of Shoreham-by-Sea’s most attractive and best value restaurants. He had eaten there many times in the past with Sandy, and more recently with Cleo. What to look for in a good Dog Training Class Did you know that when it comes to Dog Training there is no governing body. Local Dog Trainer and Behaviourist Gill White offers advice on what to look for when considering training for your pet pooch.

S

O THAT MAY seem rather a strange title, but many pet dog owners are unaware that Dog Trainers and Behaviourist have no governing body to work under, so anybody can just call themselves such without taking any good scientifically based courses. In fact many owners reach me totally confused about all the conflicting advice out there from the television, internet, books, and even their neighbour is a dog expert! When training a dog you can use the philosophy ‘make the dog it!’ or, in my preference, ‘make the dog want to do it’. In order to get the dog to want to learn and enjoy learning you must have a good understanding on learning theory

18

and behaviour. If not, the dog cannot learn as well and the instructor starts to fail in its teaching and has to result to ‘make the dog do it!’ which will involve anything from reprimanding verbally/ physically to actually using positive punishers such as spray collars/electric shock collars to make the dog comply with their will out of force and fear. These dogs never look happy when training. If the relationship between owner and dog starts to break down the dog would rather look anywhere else other than at the owner/handler. When it is off its leash the dog may well prefer the company of other dogs instead of going back to the owner. Some people think rewards, such as food, should not be given in training;

the dog should learn and comply without them; yet, these same people would not dream of working for a month without any pay. Rewards can be anything your dog loves — not just food rewards that should not result in bribery training. Looking for the right type of Dog Training Class shouldn’t be difficult if you know what to look for: always ask if you can watch a session without your dog before joining; and look for happy dogs and happy owners enjoying learning together. A good instructor would be knowledgable of the learning theory and understand dogs — they certainly wouldn’t be employing harsh corrective methods. Training should always be about fostering a better relationship between the human and their best friend — their dog.
