BEACH MAINTENANCE
The recent weather events have caused erosion along many parts of Lancing and Shoreham beaches. This erosion has left the beach in a poor condition in several locations, including Widewater and Lancing Beach Green. To protect the most vulnerable areas from immediate flood risk, further emergency works are being undertaken to recycle shingle. Working to recycle shingle bolsters and reinstates the beach defences following storm Angus. The plan is to move shingle material from the eastern end of the Environment Agency maintained beach frontage in the vicinity of The Old Fort breakwater. The shingle material will be required to ensure that the beach provides the required level of protection against flooding and over-topping. Whilst the works will remove shingle from the Old Fort area, there will be no shingle removed from the Local Nature Reserve. Shingle will be extracted between the low and high water marks in this location. There will be no plant working on the Local Nature Reserve. Emergency works will take this material from the eastern end of Shoreham Beach and transport it primarily to the Widewater Lagoon area, where the beach has been noticeably damaged. Lancing and Shoreham are vulnerable to flooding from waves over-topping the beach and from breaching of the shingle bank. The shingle beach frontage between Old Fort and Lancing Beach Green is a flood defence which protects people and property from the sea. Shingle recycling will help to maintain the flood defences offered by the beach and provide the standard of protection required by the coastal defence scheme that the Environment Agency completed in partnership with Worthing Borough Council in 2005. The 2005 coastal defence scheme built the rock groynes along Lancing beach to Widewater. The scheme was designed to protect over 1,400 residential properties and businesses from up to 1 in 100 year storms. The scheme was designed to slow the natural movement of shingle along the beach. This is predominantly in a west to east direction caused by wave action.
ADUR PARKING REVIEW
Adur District Council has carried out its first review of off street parking for five years. The recommendations which are expected to be implemented this month are designed to retain competitively priced parking provision in the area for businesses, residents and visitors both in terms of short and long term parking. Some long term tariffs have been reduced, short stay tariffs of 30 minutes have been retained and season tickets have been made more convenient by enabling them to be purchased monthly and quarterly as well as annually. Overall the charges remain lower than those of neighbouring areas. Adur District Council manages a total of 13 off street pay and display car parks as well as a number of free surface car parks. The car parks provide both short and long term parking which is of high importance for visitors, businesses and residents. The Council followed guidance from The Department for Transport, that states that parking tariffs should be reviewed regularly; more sustainable forms of transport such as cycling and public transport should be encouraged and that short term parking should be encouraged off street rather than on street to curb congestion. The changes have been designed to encourage increased use of car parks and avoid on street congestion. Major changes of note include: the half hour tariff has been retained for people only needing to park for a short period of time; season ticket costs have been maintained at £350 /year (less than £1 per day) and will also be offered on a monthly and a quarterly basis to make them more attractive to people who do not want or need to commit to a full year; at key sites (Tarmount Lane, Pond Road and Ropetackle) the all day tariff will be reduced from £8 to £5 or £4 at Ropetackle; tariffs have not been changed in five years and increases to some remain at a modest level to encourage use of the car parks; the number of tariffs will be simplified, eg Pond Road and Tarmount Lane will move from nine tariff bands to five; charges will apply between 9am and 6pm rather than 5pm to bring them in line with on street controls; a £1 charge will be introduced on Sundays and Bank Holidays to those remaining car parks where currently there is no charging in place on these days; 'pay-by-phone' technology will be adopted alongside traditional pay and display machines to provide customers with greater flexibility when paying for parking. Full details of all charges can be found at http://bit.ly/adur-parking 4
SOUTH COAST JAZZ FESTIVAL
Now a firmly established fixture on the south coast, Claire Martin OBE and Julian Nicholas are delighted to announce that thanks to kind support from Arts Council England, the South Coast Jazz Festival will be returning for a third year in January 2017. Expanding on the success of its previous editions, the core weekend will again take place at Ropetackle, but this year complemented by a further seven days of concerts, workshops and special events at The Verdict jazz club in Brighton and The Old Market in Hove. The festival will forge new alliances with fellow jazz supporting organisations and develop its existing relationships to deliver a comprehensive programme that will not only showcase young and emerging artists alongside the best of today’s British jazz scene, but also reflect the rich and culturally diverse landscape of jazz today. Legendary jazz-funk band Incognito will launch the festival with a special party night on Saturday 17th December at The Old Market, and the January programme will commence with a performance from emerging pianist David Drake. Headliners for the rest of the festival include Alec Dankworth Spanish Accents, Zoe Rahman, Sarah Jane Morris, Jim Mullen’s Organ Trio, Ray Gelato’s Giants, and a schedule of workshops and seminars covering jazz education, the music business, jazz for juniors and instrumental masterclasses. We’re delighted to announce Jazz FM is a media partner for this year’s festival. Don’t miss out on upcoming interviews with festival artists and all the latest festival news on-air and on-line. Jazz FM is available on DAB+ in Shoreham, Hove, Brighton and surrounding areas, having recently returned to national DAB. Playing a unique mix of jazz, blues and soul, the station regularly features festival favourites Incognito, Ray Gelato, Claire Martin and Dennis Rollins. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
New Year – time for a financial review?
F
IRSTLY I WOULD like to wish everybody a very happy new year! Looking back at 2016, it was a year of great change with several social and political shocks. No doubt this will continue into 2017 which promises to be an interesting and potentially turbulent year in many respects. Since the EU referendum and US election many of us have taken a far greater interest in politics, watching the news and trying to get some clarity on what it all means. Going forward as our country and world’s future starts to become clearer it is easy to focus on the bigger picture. We shouldn’t forget, however, our own very unique financial situation as we look forward. New year is a great time to take stock of your personal finances. You may have overspent at Christmas or been so busy you have lost track. A review could mean paying off or transferring to a lower rate credit card. You could check out your mortgage deal, or diarise when your current deal ends. Taking it one step further, is it time for a proper review of all your finances? A full review may seem daunting, most people have gathered several financial products over time but forget the details as time goes on. Many don’t have a proper relationship with an independent adviser and don’t know who to call to get clarification. It’s not surprising a lot of this gets tucked away in the drawer not to be looked at again. So much money is wasted each year on products which are not the best for people. People pay for cover they no longer need, or pay into pensions and investments which are not performing well. Some harbour money in accounts where they are receiving little or no interest. The financial world has moved on greatly over the last few years. We now have systems where we can manage people’s investments on an ongoing basis, monitoring performance and accessing the country’s top fund managers. Previously, these arrangements were only available to large investors, now we can access them for smaller sums. Your pension or ISA may not be huge, but it should be looked after properly. If you are interested in a review, here at Talk Money we can deal with everything, from your mortgage to your ISAs to your pension arrangements. All of this under one roof. We have interactive client systems which allow you check your values 6
whenever you wish, and direct online links to many of the life companies. Just one meeting with us and we will gather all of the information together, make it all clear and help you get your finances on track. If you would like a full review of your finances, or advice on something individual, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. Carlos Trower
C
ARLOS TROWER, THE performer who was also known as ‘The Black Blondin’, is known to have performed on both July 7th and 14th 1883 at Shoreham’s Swiss Gardens. An extraordinary tight rope walker, Carlos Trower was born in New York and his first documented performance was with the Circus Dundee in Scotland in 1862. It is reported that he saw himself as a rival to the famed French tight rope walker, Blondin, and intended trying his luck in Europe, hoping to outdo the daring Frenchman. His next reported performance was in Ely, Cambridgeshire, where a large crowd gathered to watch his light rope work. In 1885, he is known to have married, aged nineteen, to the seventeen year old Myra Clay. They had two sons and lived for a time in Kingston Upon Hull. During a performance at Beverley cattle market in April, 1869, Trower was seriously injured when the high rope he was performing on snapped. He lay on the grass with the balancing pole underneath him and appeared lifeless. After he was carried back to his lodgings it was discovered that his arm and wrist were broken. A newspaper report from that December however found Carlos Trower performing again, this time at the Theatre Royal Harlepool, running backwards upon the rope from the furthest part of the stage to the top of the gallery, heavily chained, and then enveloped in a sack. The audience were suitably impressed. The ups and downs of an acrobat’s precarious life were also evidence at Leeds Music Hall the following year as Trower had a severe fall when a rope suddenly gave way, and he fell into the pit, a distance of from 25 to 30 feet. One man received a blow which broke his nose, whilst others were slightly hurt in the incident. In 1876, Carlos Trower is known to have married for the second time. He resided with his new wife Annie Emmett in Barnstable. They had a daughter named Celia who performed as a child alongside her father and her half-brother (also named Carlos), and was known as ‘The Black Star’. After appearing before 50,000 people at Rudyard Lake, Leek in 1878, Carlos Trower sailed to America on the steamer
8
Ageral, performing onboard as he walked a rope tied mast to mast. In New York he performed on Emancipation Day, where he was recorded as being driven away after his act by his own carriage and horses. The next year he returned to England, where Blondin threathened legal action after hearing of him being billed as ‘The Black Blondin’. Claims were also made that Carlos Trower, like Blondin, had crossed Niagara, but these have not been substatuated. In 1885, he was drawing the crowds at Crystal Palace, where the directors of the place persuaded him to appear without a safety net, to up the theatrical tension. It wasn’t until the following year however that another bad fall saw the performer taken to London’s St. Thomas’s hospital. He was soon back performing across England though, with Celia on trapeze, and special train services being laid on to take spectators to see him. A newspaper report of 1887 remarked that The Great African Blondin was endeavoring to obtain permission to cross the Thames from St. Thomas’s hospital to the House of Commons on the occasion of the Royal Jubilee. It is not known if he succeeded. All however was not well in Trower’s world. In January 1889 he smashed his hand with a hammer before a performance, and a month later was mentioned as entering a lunatic asylum in Bow, East London. He died there the same year, aged forty years old. A benefit perfomance in aid of his his widow and children took place in Peckham. Little is known about his 1883 performance at the Swiss Gardens, though it is believed his walked a tightrope across the lake, which was at that time much larger in size than it is now. The French Blondin, real name Jean-François Gravelet, is also believed to have walked a high rope across the lake at the Swiss Gardens, thirteen years previous to Trower’s feat. During Blondin’s lifetime there were at least five people working with variations of the Blondin name in Sydney, Australia alone, and many others throughout the world. So popular had tightrope walking become, that one Sydney resident wrote to the local paper to complain of ‘the Blondin business’ that saw people walking on high wires wherever the opportunity arose. A new gardening year W
ELL HERE WE are well into January, with Christmas and the New Year seeming a long way off already. Although we are in the darker colder winter months, it’s always a good time of year to start looking ahead. The days will slowly lengthen and with the odd day of full winter sunshine you can start to notice changes in the garden. Already as we are working on projects we can see evidence of new life appearing with bulbs staring to show and new growth on shrubs. There’s already work to do in the garden at this time of year
10
in the flower beds. Plants such as dogwoods, clematis, wisterias, roses and buddleias can be pruned back hard. With climbers such as clematis, if you are not going to cut them well back, then at least take the opportunity to thin them out and cut them back around obstacles such as windows, doors and gutters. They actually hold a lot of weight, so now is a time place to repair, reinforce or replace any trellis they may be growing on. Apple and pear trees can also be pruned to get rid of damaged branches or simply to thin out heavy growth from the inside, which will help promote fruiting on the tree for the coming year. Also, have a look at any other large shrubs or trees in the garden that need a trim. Losing heavy branches or dead wood will help protect the tree from damage from heavy winds or snow if we get any. Although it may be January, it’s already the time to carry out planting on the vegetable plot. Fruit canes, such as raspberry and blackberry’s can be planted out. Keeping an eye to the end of the month and shallots, onions and carrots can be planted out, if you do it under cover of a cloche. Alternatively you can do them in smaller containers and use polythene bags to cover them, but do remove them periodically to allow the air to change. Start looking ahead as in a few weeks time the first seeds will be ready for sowing on the window cill or in the greenhouse. Give the greenhouse a good tidy through and a good wash down to help kill of any lingering diseases that may be left over from last year. While you are doing that, don’t forget to wash the seed trays out as well. Now is a really good time to get your seeds ordered so you are all ready to go. It’s also useful looking around the garden centres as some local ones do very good offers on new seeds. If you have any leftover seeds in the shed that are out of date, then best to get rid of them. It’s not worth putting the effort in to something that may not give a good return. I often say this at this time of year but if you are looking at getting larger projects done in the garden, then now is a very good time to be thinking about them. Spring comes around very quickly and it can be difficult to get decent landscapers once the spring rush starts, so make your plans early and get the work booked up. It’s also a good time to get work carried out as it will cause less disruption to the garden and it will allow the garden to recover quicker. So here we go again looking forward to a new gardening year and seeing what challenges will get thrown our way once again! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

These exercises strengthen superficial muscles but not the core muscles, so although you might, if your lucky end up with good definition, it won’t help you avoid back pain.
How can we strengthen our core muscles?
Five exercises for strengthening your core Lower back pain is one of the most common problems Louis Jones sees and can be one of the most persistent and recurrent of injuries. One way we can reduce our risk of back pain, or how you can ease back pain if you are already suffering, is through core strength.
Y
OUR CORE MUSCLES are the deeper muscles in your lower trunk that are designed to stabilise and protect your spine. However, due to bad habits and poor posture, we can become lazy, and therefore we do not use the core muscles as much as we should. Often, when you hear someone telling you they want to strengthen their core, they will mention exercises such as sits-ups.

Core muscles are designed to work all of the time, even when you’re resting, such as when you sit down, and therefore, for this to happen they need to work at a low level, so they do not fatigue and give up working. Therefore core muscles strength should be gentle, subtle in nature, with an emphasis on focusing on your breathing. This is why Pilates is so good, but ask some people about their experience of Pilates, and they may say something like: “I didn’t really feel like I was doing much”, or “I didn’t get a burn”, or “ It wasn’t energetic enough for me”. Below are 5 exercises that will help your strengthen your core muscles and help you reduce the risk of back pain. 1. Sitting balance on a Swiss Ball: Sit upright on a Swiss Ball, with your feet hip width apart and rest your hands on your thighs. Make sure to sit tall, and gently pull your stomach in towards your spine, whilst breathing. When you are ready, carefully pick one foot off of the floor, and try and maintain your sitting balance without rolling on your ball. Try and hold your balance for up to 30 seconds, and repeat on both sides. 2. Bridging: Lay on your back, with your knees bent, your feet resting flat on the floor and your feet about hip width apart. Push up through your hips to lift your hips off the floor, making sure to keep your back straight. Do not arch your back too far or let your hips drop on wither side. You should try and hold this position for 5 seconds and repeat the movement 10 times. 3. Superman pose: Kneel on all fours with your hands shoulder width apart, and your knees hip width apart. Keep your back and neck in a straight line. Pull your stomach in as above. Without arching or tilting your back, try to straighten one arm out horizontal to the ground and do the same behind you with your opposite leg. You should not aim to raise your arm or leg for height, but think of the movement as more of a stretching position. You should hold the pose on one side for 5 seconds, and try and repeat the movement each side up to 10 times. 4. Single leg balance: Simply stand up tall, with your feet hip width apart, and whilst pulling in your stomach muscles, try and lift one foot off the floor, so that you balance on one leg. Try and maintain a level pelvis. You should aim to balance on one leg for up to 1 minute each side. 5. Plank: This is quite an advanced exercise, done properly. Adopt a press up position on your front, but rest on your forearms and elbows, instead of on your hands. Place your feet hip width apart and rest on the balls of your toes. Try and lift your whole body off the floor, just resting on your forearms, elbows and feet. Hold this position for as long as you can, before you start to drop your hips or you begin to shake. Avoid back pain with these simple exercises that can be performed daily. If you would like more information about cores strength or back pain prevention, feel free to call me on 01273467614 or info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065
