NEW CENTRE COMMENDED BY SHOREHAM SOCIETY
After settling into their new home at the Shoreham Centre, Adur District Council have been presented with a plaque by architects from the Shoreham Society. The ‘Award for Conserving the Built Environment’ was presented by Gerry Thompson and Christopher Harris of the Shoreham Society, in reflection of the new centre’s design and functions. At last week’s Full Council Meeting, Cllr Carson Albury, Chair of Adur District Council, and Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, were on hand to gratefully receive the plaque. Cllr Parkin commented: “We are delighted to have received this award from the Shoreham Society. The plaque will feature prominently at the entrance of our new Customer Service office in the Shoreham Centre.” The Shoreham Centre, located on Pond Road, is now the focal point for the Council’s customer services in Shoreham following their move from Adur Civic Centre in December.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Retirement – what is your best option? T HERE ARE MANY ways of taking your pension income and the whole thing can be quite bewildering, especially now there are more flexible options available. The right choice depends totally on your circumstances and what is important to you in terms of your income. Some people want absolute guarantees, others require flexibility. Some are single and are not worried about providing an income to a spouse should they die, for others a widow’s pension is essential. Also what about the tax free cash? You may need this for a specific purpose upfront, or you may want to incorporate it into your future income. Choosing the wrong options could greatly affect what you may receive in your retirement. Many people have different pension pots with various providers. When they reach retirement age, the providers generally write offering an annuity, some people just sign the form and obtain the income from their current provider. How do you know that is the right way of setting up your retirement income and how do you know that the company will provide you with the highest annuity in the marketplace? This is especially true if you have history of ill health, as you may be eligible for an enhanced annuity. This is due to your life expectancy being potentially less so some providers are willing to pay a higher income from outset.
provides flexibility and often a higher level of death benefit for your beneficiaries. For independent advice on any of the above, or if you are approaching retirement and looking at your options please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. All providers will offer different amounts of income for your capital, it is essential to shop around. Here is a brief explanation of the two main options when taking retirement income: Lifetime annuity: A lifetime annuity is a guaranteed income paid to you for life from an insurance company. The annuity would be purchased using the money you have built up in your pension plans during your working life. The pension provider will assess how long they think you will live and will provide a guaranteed income for the rest of your life in return for your pension fund. Income Drawdown: Your pension money would remain invested and you can take income directly from the fund each year. Income can be set at the required level, it can be changed during the term or stopped altogether. This method 6

Shoreham On Film
L
AST MONTH WE looked at television programmes that have used Shoreham as a location. Feature films too that have graced local cinemas have been shot in Shoreham, even though we have had no film industry of our own since the 1920s. Recently, in the summer of 2014, BBC Films shot scenes for their movie ‘Woman In Gold’ at Shoreham Airport. The film named after a famous Gustav Klimt painting – ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer’ was directed by Simon Curtis (husband of ‘Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, who also appears in the film), and starred Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds and Katie Holmes. Worming our way to summer
I
’VE NOT REALLY enjoyed this winter so far! It seems to have been far too wet for long periods and already we have had some very low temperatures with some hard frosts. On the bright side the slightly lighter evenings are just becoming apparent as dusk is getting that little bit later each day. If we are not enjoying the weather then I’m sure some of the wildlife in the garden is not enjoying it either. When all is said and done in the garden, and we have finished all our hard work, how well our garden does is really down to everything that inhabits it, from the smallest insect to the big badgers, who seem to love digging areas up. There really are two options when it comes to
10
your garden. Either try and keep it like a picture postcard and try to fight with nature, or accept that nature doesn’t work like that and try to get the best from it by helping it. I’ve had clients who are insistent they don’t want worm cast on new lawns and will go to great lengths to try and stop the worms from causing them. Whilst the lawn may look wonderful, in the long run by driving them away, the lawn will suffer as they won’t be there to help enrich and aerate the soil. All manner of visitors we see as pests are actually a welcome and helpful aid in the garden. As much as we may detest wasps, they actually do a great job in helping to wipe out many other problems, such as greenfly. Woodlice are seen as a pest by many, but they do a remarkable job of disposing of rotten material Even in gardens where there is little other than paving, little things can be done to attract wildlife, such as feeding stations for birds, or planting flowers and shrubs that will attract insects, such as Buddleia, which will have butterflies swarming over them in the summer, as well as providing very attractive flowers. A small area of wild flowers can do wonders in attracting bees. I wish the local councils would plant more wildflowers on the verges to help encourage them. It’s the small things and acceptance that can make a big difference in the garden. If you leave a small woodpile undisturbed in an unvisited corner of the garden, it will attract a multitude of insects. A few upturned flower pots will give a home to more. We’ve all spent time picking out snails and slugs and trying to get rid of them. Let’s face it, it never works, and it actually encourages more birds into the garden, as its part of their food chain. If you plant vegetables, then you know you will lose a fair bit to insects and the birds, despite your best efforts. In the past I have gone mad trying to get rid of blackfly on my runner beans. One day I came into the garden to see they were a mass of ladybirds who were gorging on the blackfly. Nature has a way of balancing and adapting. If you know you are going to lose some to the insects, then rather than fighting them, plant some extra. I know I would much rather see a garden bursting with all types of life rather than a sterile show garden, so why not give yours some thought and do one little thing to make it more accommodating for the visitors who do so much unseen hard work to help produce the wonderful gardens we enjoy so much. After all there is nothing nicer than sitting in the garden on a summer’s day with the sound of bees buzzing around. Now there’s a nice image to think about on a cold February day. How to tell if you have a sports hernia Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, shows you the five main signs of a sports hernia.
A
SPORTS HERNIA, or ‘Gilmore’s Groin’, named after Mr. Owen Gilmore, the physician who discovered it, can be very tricky to diagnose as symptoms may vary from person to person. They are not to be confused with a conventional hernia, which usually presents as a tearing in

the abdominal wall, with a palpable lump. They are most common in footballers, who take long kicks, or slide to tackle, and may overstretch their hips or groin area. Here are the 5 main signs of a sports hernia: 1. You have pain in your groin region: One sign that you may have a sports hernia, is if you have pain in your inner thigh or groin region. Having said that sportspeople have suffered with unusual areas of pain that are related to a sports hernia, which do not respond well to conventional physiotherapy treatment. 2. You have difficulty getting in and out of a car: If you are experiencing pain whilst getting in or out of a car, this can be a sign f a sports hernia. 3. When playing sport, your pace noticeably slows after around an hour of exercise: Pain would usually come on immediately with exercise, but with a sports hernia, there is usually no pain, but a noticeable reduction in pace, when attempting to sprint, after about an hour. 4. You have a positive cough reflex or flutter: If you were to feel around your pubic region, you would notice a feeling when you cough, similar to the vibration or fuzziness you would feel or hear when you blow a party blower. This is known as a flutter, or a positive cough reflex. 5. You have a positive test on Gilmore’s test: The test for Gilmore’s Groin is to lay on your back, with your legs straight and your feet together. Raise your legs straight approximately 6 inches off the floor, and press firmly into your pubic region. A positive test would bring on a painful response. The treatment for a sports hernia, is usually minor surgery, to repair the damage. The recovery is usually excellent, and with the correct treatment and exercise regime after, you could be back playing sport within 3-4 weeks post surgery. If you are unsure whether you have a sports hernia, it is worth having a physiotherapy assessment to determine a diagnosis and decide on a suitable treatment plan. Water – not an enemy but a misunderstood friend
A
S THE EFFECTS of climate change start to impact all over the world, Sussex Wildlife Trust is committed to helping people understand the importance of wetlands as they play a vital role acting as ‘overflow storage’ for water which may otherwise flood nearby towns. Sussex Wildlife Trust is hoping people will support World Wetlands Day on February 2nd by enjoying a visit to one of its specialist wetland nature reserves. Wetlands are incredibly rich in life and they make a superb home for plants, birds and insects, including some of our elusive and endangered wildlife including the otter and water vole. But, they are just as important for people. They help protect us against flooding, replenish our drinking water stores, clean up pollution and store carbon dioxide. Fran Southgate, Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Wetlands Officer, said ‘We need to rethink our approach to water and wetlands, seeing it not as an enemy but as a misunderstood friend. If we can make space for water in the right places in our landscapes, then we can protect people, enhance wildlife and still have enough water to go around. Ensuring that wetlands can still provide these essential services for people is vital, and it means that we cannot work in isolation. ‘Unfortunately wetlands are often viewed as wastelands. Recent floods have prompted further calls to ‘dredge all rivers and drain all the land’. Rivers that are dredged and canalized not only damage fishing and other livelihoods, but they rush water downstream and flood people further down river. Sussex is one of the most water stressed regions of Britain, and in summer the livelihoods of thousands will be adversely affected by drought if we carry out this kind of drainage.’ Sussex Wildlife Trust, a registered charity, is helping to protect some of our most iconic wetland landscapes. New Interactive Book
Following the success of The Little Book Of Garden Bird Songs, www. finefeatherpress.com is bringing out the next in the series. The Little Book Of Woodland Bird Songs features twelve songs from some of Britain’s best-loved feathered friends who inhabit the forests and woodlands throughout the UK. Originally designed for young children, these sound books turn out to be popular with the whole family and especially among parents and grandparents who have fun learning with their offspring. The solid board pages are chunky enough for the smallest of hands to manage, and include beautifully illustrated information about each featured bird. As well as describing their habitat, feeding habits and physical appearance, there is also a little known fact about each bird — did you know that pheasants occasionally launch territorial attacks on people, animals and even cars? What brings these books to life is the sound bar, which enables you to identify each different bird by its song. At £12.99, The Little Book Of Woodland Bird Songs is a real keepsake that will be enjoyed by children and everyone young at heart. Available from 15th February, it’s suitable for children and grown-ups aged 3 and up. www.finefeatherpress.com To advertise call: 01273 452065
