SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK
FEBRUARY 2017
Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the February Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Firstly, Happy Chinese New Year! It started on the Saturday the 28th January and continues until February 2018. As we head towards spring the weather remains unpredictable. I am sure that we will have a few more fresh mornings as we head towards spring. In this month's issue, we have the latest article from Judy Upton. She writes about the first markets in this area to the present Shoreham Open Market held in East Street. A lovely historical article! We also have the latest tips and advice from Louis Jones — why do we twist our ankles? — and well as the latest financial advice from Claire Cook. We are always updating our What’s On Pages with new classes and activities in the area. With five pages of local events in Shoreham and Southwick, there is a lot to choose from. On that note, Happy Valentine’s Day and see you in March. All the best, Angela

NEW HOMES FOR ADUR Brand new homes will be built on two derelict sites in Adur, after plans were approved this week to build on the vacant brownfield sites. Adur District Council's Planning Committee this week approved plans to demolish the former Bell Memorial Care Home in Lancing, making way for the construction of 32 new apartments comprising of 2 and 3 bedroom units. The four-storey building, proposed for South Street, will also feature a communal rooftop terrace and 34 on-site car parking spaces. Worthing based developer Roffey Homes have worked with ECE Architecture to created a contemporary designs, reflecting the positive ambitions of Lancing where several regeneration works are already underway. £150,000 funding has also been set aside to improve local infrastructure. ST BARNABAS HOUSE DALAIR LAMA TREK Local hospice St Barnabas House has now opened registrations for its latest overseas fundraising challenge, the Dalai Lama India Trek. The challenge, which will take place on 18-28 October 2018, will see a team of 50 trekkers journey through the spiritual heart of Northern India, home to the Dalai Lama and the centre of the Tibetan community in the foothills of the Himalayas. The team will begin their journey in Dharamsala, where the Tibetan community are situated, before setting off into the peaceful and stunning Himalayan mountain range. The trip will round off with an unmissable visit to the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s greatest monuments to love. As part of the challenge, participants will also be invited to hang prayer flags at the highest point of the trek in Laka Got to celebrate the lives of loved ones and all those cared for by St Barnabas House. Kerry O’Neill, Events Fundraiser for St Barnabas House, said: “We often find that the challenge events we hold, particularly the overseas treks, include a number of participants who have a close personal connection to the hospice." St Barnabas House is a charity which provides outstanding specialist palliative care, both within the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ homes. Part of the challenge of the trek is raising sponsorship money to help St Barnabas House to expand its care services through its Hospice Care Pioneers initiative. If you would like to attend the information evening you will need to book your place by emailing events@stbh.org.uk or by calling 01903 706354 as space is limited. 4
work in expected to start in February with an 18 month construction schedule. In Ham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, plans were also approved to transform part of a former school building and yard into a mixed commercial and residential area. Caxton House sits in close proximity to the railway station and former Cvic Centre, which is also in the pipeline for regeneration, whilst also a short distance from Shoreham town centre. Through a selective demolition of the vacant building's more modern additions, together with alterations and refurbishment, the scheme will see 14 new apartments ranging from studio to 3 bedroom homes. Cllr Brian Boggis, Adur District Council's Executive Member for Regeneration welcomed the news, commenting: “These two applications signal confidence in Shoreham and Lancing as places for residential and commercial investment, supporting a strong identity which has been developed by the communities and businesses of Adur. We're committed to providing new homes and infrastructure to help meet the demands of our residents, as well as for those who aspire to live and work in Adur.”

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
ISAs: Have you used your allowance?
I
N THE CURRENT extended period of low interest rates many people are struggling to find the best home for their money. To get the best rates on your cash nowadays, you have to be on the ball. Many banks and building societies offer higher rates for a certain amount of investment, but most of these accounts come with caveats. You may need to do a certain level of transactions each month; the higher rate may apply only to a limited balance, or there is an end date to remember. The result of this is that many people have their money divided over many different financial institutions, this can give a better return but can be hard work to keep track of. Traditionally, finance savvy people have always sought a cash ISA to invest their annual ISA allowance. Last year something changed, in April 2016 the new Personal Savings Allowance was introduced. This meant that basic rate taxpayers could earn £1,000 interest without paying tax, for higher rate taxpayers the limit is £500. This new tax allowance has left many people asking if a cash ISA is worth doing. If you can get a more favourable rate on a normal savings account which could be tax free anyway, it could be argued this is the best route. What about your ISA allowance? Any ISA allowance not used during the tax year is a lost opportunity for longer term tax free growth. This tax year you can invest up to £15,240 into an ISA whether this be a cash ISA, a stocks and shares ISA or a combination of the two. Any growth on an ISA is tax free from time of inception until the funds are withdrawn. Many people have built up considerable sums in ISAs (previously PEPs) over the years and are enjoying long term tax free growth. For some this forms a large part of their retirement planning. Not only do ISAs grow tax free, there are no tax complications for you to deal with later on. The returns do not need to be reported on your tax return. If you haven’t used your ISA allowance this year for the reasons above or if you have just haven’t got around to it, there is still time. It may be appropriate to consider investment in the stocks and shares variety. Some people think these are high risk, but not necessarily so. A stocks and shares ISA can be set up at a risk level that suits individual investors. Although the return 6
cannot be guaranteed, a stocks and shares ISA has the potential to provide a higher long term growth than investment in cash. If you would like a full review of your finances, or advice on something individual, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. Shoreham's Open Market
S
HOREHAM NOW HAS regular Farmers’, Artisans and Continental markets in East Street as well as a weekly indoor market at the Shoreham Centre, but in the early 1900s, an open market took place in the High Street itself, as recalled by my late grandfather George Upton. The street traders sold their wares on various wooden barrows, on every day of the week. Some arrived with seasonal produce, others were regulars who turned up rain or shine. Among them were Ted and Albert Page and Arthur March. Later, for many years an elderly man named Mr Clements used to sell fresh mackerel and other fish caught at Shoreham beach from his stall in front of the Marlipins every Wednesday morning. The Market Place was not in the roadway itself but was almost enclosed. A stone pillar supporting a gas lamp stood midway between what was the town hall (now a restaurant) and John Street. A thick wall jutted out from the town hall to this pillar and a number of thick, round, ornamental iron posts ran about a third of the way to Church Street towards a similar pillar, lamp and thick wall. Shoreham’s original Market House was destroyed in the great storm of 1703. A replacement was erected by Sir Nathaniel Gould. It consisted of ‘an oblong canopy of freestone, embellished with gothic ornaments, supported by ten columns.’ It was described as a fine piece of architecture and stood on a site immediately in front of what is now the Crown and Anchor pub. Back in the late 1700s there was a general market there every Saturday as well as a corn market on alternate Mondays. The pillars were moved and used as lampposts when the building was replaced in 1823 with a more modest brick replacement. The Town Hall forecourt was known as Custom House Stones. This was a space where public, political, religious and other meetings were held. The Salvation Army band also used to play there one evening a week. Traditionally the fairs were a sort of reward to the people of Shoreham for the large number of men-of-war built for the
10
Queen’s navy, in the shipyards that then existed on the Adur and at the harbour. A fair on the 25th July, St James’ Day, had stalls on both the Custom House Stones and the South side of the High Street. In the early 1900s, on fair and carnival days, about twice a year, the fishermen and sailors erected poles in barrels of sand between the two stone pillars. Fairy lights, Chinese lanterns and flags were hung between the pillars along the poles and the whole area was roped off. Then there would be all the fun of the fair with music played by the Town Hall band and dancing on the Custom House Stones. The stalls were lit by paraffin flares and traders sold their wares until midnight, when the band played the national anthem. Winton’s Carnival took place each year in August, named after local man William Winton. As well as the stalls selling food, toys and novelties in the High Street, the town’s public houses stayed open all day and people dressed in colourful costumes for a parade. The streets were closed to traffic and milk churns were rolled from the station to the Norfolk Bridge. Regular dances were also held every Saturday night at the Town Hall for many years, including a yearly one to mark St Valentine’s Day organised by the Imperial Laundry, which had premises between the railway arches of Victoria and Old Shoreham Roads. My grandfather recalled last seeing the barrels and poles for a fair erected in the High Street around 1913 or 1914. People still sold their wares at this spot, though on the ground until 1939. At this point, a road-widening scheme swept away the ancient pillars, posts and the rest to make way for the new road. At the time, unfortunately, no alternative market place was given or offered to the townspeople to replace their traditional market. Street markets in Shoreham ceased until the recent pedestrian precinct being created in East Street made them possible once more. Judy Upton

Tops tips for your garden S O FAR THE weather seems to have been kinder to us this year. In the main it has been wetter with a lot more frosts, so don’t let your guard down.
Jobs for February
• Check stored fruit and vegetables and remove any damaged or mouldy produce to avoid spoiling the rest.
• Seed potatoes are available now. Chit them (allow shoots to form) by placing them in a light, cool, frost-free place. • Moss will start growing on lawns before the grass, so now is the time to start killing it with ferrous sulphate. • This is your last chance to plant bare-rooted raspberries. Prune the canes of summer-fruiting types to 10in after planting, and autumn-fruiting varieties down to ground level. • Hellebores may show distorted foliage which is the result of stop-start growth caused by lower temperatures. New shoots should now grow normally. • Check outdoor containers are regularly watered, particularly those sheltered by house porches or eaves. • Clear leaves from around snowdrops so you can see their flowers emerging. • Put up bird nesting boxes this month — it’s the last chance before tits start looking for a suitable residence. • Ventilate your glasshouse or conservatory on mild days to help prevent fungal problems.
In the borders
• Try reintroducing old favourites better equipped to deal with cold winters as alternatives to slightly tender plants. • Olive and bay trees may fail in freezing conditions, so instead plant standard Elaeagnus 'Quicksilver’ AGM, the evergreens Ilex aquifolium 'JC van Tol’ AGM or Viburnum tinus 'Gwenllian’ AGM. • In exposed gardens, try lacy purple or yellow-leaved elderberry (Sambucus nigra) instead of Japanese maples. Plant shrubby lilac Syringa x laciniata or Erysimum 'Bowles’s Mauve’ AGM instead of rosemary. • Dormant shrubs and perennials allow you to assess the need for structure. Trees with eye-catching bark, such as birches and maples, are beautiful all year. • If flowers are your passion, choose for a succession of seasonal colour. • Measuring and drawing the garden should clarify plans; view the garden from inside the house and from different angles. • Consider moving or replacing damaged, overgrown or badly placed shrubs. Nursing Assisant Katie Barrett with Brian and Kelly Barnard
Running to raise donations
K
ELLY BARNARD, 31, decided to run in honour of her father, Brian Barnard, who has been battling with Advanced Kidney Cancer for more than three years now and recently received respite care at the Worthing hospice. Having witnessed the amazing care the hospice provides first-hand, Kelly decided to change her place from a general entry to run for St Barnabas House instead. Kelly, Job Staff Development Administrator at the University of Sussex, said: “I like to run. I had already signed myself up to run the Brighton Marathon and Half Marathon in 2017, but after seeing first-hand the amazing care the hospice provides, I decided to change my plan from a general entry to run for the hospice instead. “The hospice depends on donations in order for it to continue to provide people like my dad with the outstanding level of care they do, and also families, like us.” Brian, 55, lives in Shoreham and is a keen fisherman who, until recently, volunteered for the National Coastwatch Institution and HM Coastguard. In August 2013 he was diagnosed with Advanced Kidney Cancer, a massive 14
shock to him and his family. He showed no previous symptoms besides a water infection. After receiving the devastating news that he had cancer, Brian was taken to Guy’s Hospital where he had a 16.5cm tumour removed, along with his right kidney and the lymph nodes surrounding it. Early into his cancer journey, Brian and his family made the decision to include St Barnabas in his care plan in order to manage his pain to enable him to continue his active lifestyle. Despite tumours in both lungs, shoulders, his bottom rib and skull, Brian continued to rescue people with the Coastguard. In October 2016, Brian was diagnosed with further tumours on his spine and lymph nodes in his back, which led to him being admitted to the In-patient Unit at St Barnabas House. He remained there for two weeks before being transferred to Guy’s Hospital where he received further radiotherapy before being discharged. Brian said: “During my time at St Barnabas House I was treated with so much care and compassion, I can only have praise for all who work there.
Nothing is too much trouble for anyone, even when it comes to just a reassuring chat during the early hours of the morning when feeling a little vulnerable.” Kelly added: “The care and compassion Papa Barney received from the hospice was nothing short of amazing. The help given to dad and us as his family has gone far beyond all expectations. “After watching the strength, determination and the courage my dad has shown fighting cancer, it’s safe to say that he often wakes up and feels like he has run a marathon every day! “I had hoped to raise £10 per mile for each run – a total of £393 for the hospice – but within two days of setting up my JustGiving page (www.justgiving. com/fundraising/barneyrunsforbarnabas) I had reached my original target! I have now raised the target to £800 and I am hoping that we can now smash this by the time I run the Brighton Marathon in April!” If you would like to set yourself the challenge of running either the Brighton Marathon or Brighton Half Marathon in 2017, St Barnabas still have charity places available. Brighton Half charity places require a minimum sponsorship of £200, while Brighton Marathon places require £500. If you already have your own place on either event you can still join the St Barnabas House running team. Find out more by going to www.stbh.org.uk/run. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Why do you keep twisting your ankle? In this month’s article, Louis Jones explores the problem sprained ankle, why it happens and what we can do to prevent it happening in future.
H
AVE YOU EVER twisted your ankle on a pavement curb, or perhaps out running or walking, on a hidden tree root? Ever wondered why after the pain and swelling goes, the ankle is left feeling weak and without any warning you find it giving way time and time again? What is an ankle sprain and how do they happen? An ankle sprain is an overstretching of ligaments that supports the ankle joint, through a twisting action, most commonly, with the foot going inwards under the weight of the body, and pain, swelling and bruising occurring in the outside of the foot and ankle.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

What are the signs of swelling and bruising? If your ankle and foot swells in size then there has been a trauma to the ligamentous and muscular tissues, and lymphatic system, which causes cells and fluid to become stimulated in order for the tissues to be able to repair. Pain is a reaction to the stretching of soft tissue. If you see bruising then this indicates a tearing of ligament or muscle fibres, which then bleeds and usually pools into the inside and outside of the heel and into the toes. A tear is more serious than a sprain, and can take longer to heel. How long is recovery? Full recovery usually takes between 6-8 weeks, with caring for the ankle and doing specific rehabilitation. At the onset you should apply the RICE technique (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation) to help reduce bleeding and swelling in the soft tissues, which can slow heeling and cause more damage. What can you do to avoid further injury? The problem is, most if not all people who sprain or tear their ankle ligaments, once their pain and swelling has disappeared, fail to do 2 important things. 1. Specific strength work 2. Proprioception/Balance Specific strength work includes using a resistance band to strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint, which helps to protect the ankle ligaments and joint from further damage. Simply walking around on it and going up and down stairs, trying to carry on as normal is not going to cut it I’m afraid. As I’ve learned time and time again from treating clients, their problems persist. Proprioception/Balance work is very important in order to restore strength and feedback back to the ligaments. When you first damage your ankle, the ligaments lose their ability to send the unconscious signal to your brain that your ankle is about to go over, helping your brain recognize when your ankle may be likely to twist, so that you can counteract it before it happens. This is the single most common reason why so many people re-injure themselves. Doing daily balance exercises on single leg, with eyes closed, or practicing balance on a wobble board can make all the difference! If you would like any further information or advice regarding ankle injuries or treatment, please feel free to email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk or call me on 01273 467614. The history behind
Valentine's Day
S
PRING IS ALMOST upon us and, like the rest of nature, our thoughts are turning to romance. As bulbs begin to peep out of the ground and birdsong our gardens, there is a noticeable change in the air as St Valentine's Day approaches. Embracing a time of year that is historically associated with love and fertility, St Valentine's Day encompasses the marriage of Greek gods Zeus and Hera and the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility. There is some dispute over the original date of this festival but since 496 St Valentine's Day has been celebrated on February 14 when Pope Galasius named it in memory of a third century Roman priest. While there were two other St Valentines, one a priest in Italy and another who lived and died in Africa, it is widely accepted that the Bishop of Interamna (now Terni in northern Italy) is the basis for the modern saint. Valentinius was a devout Catholic who dared to flout Roman Emperor Claudius II's edict which banned soldiers from marrying, as he believed it weakened their military resolve and focus. Instead, all young Roman men were ordered to worship their twelve gods and every Be inspired by the UK’s widest selection of hardy plants all covered by our lifetime guarantee

February 15 they celebrated a fertility festival where the men were allowed to choose a sexual partner from the young women gathered. But Valentinius encouraged the men to shun the heathen practice and dedicate themselves instead to Christ and the sanctity of marriage. He preached Christ at the threat of death and officiated secret weddings on February 14. He continued to conduct marriages in secret between young people, sometimes as young as twelve, and was eventually arrested. During his imprisonment, Valentinius taught Julia, the prison commander's beautiful but blind daughter, about Roman history, arithmetic and God. Spurred on by her faith, he prayed for her and she received her sight but only in time to read his last note on the eve of his execution, urging her to devote her life to God and signed "from your Valentine". He was killed the next day, February 14, 270 AD, and Julia and many whose lives were touched remembered him every February 14, by sending notes and gifts to others to celebrate his life. That tradition has grown rapidly worldwide and an estimated one billion cards are now sent each year, making it the second largest card-sending holiday of
the year after Christmas. However, many centuries later, St Valentine continues to be the source of fervent discussion and disagreement. Far from the passion and heat of the Italian capital, two Celtic nations are at loggerheads over who can lay claim to the saint's holy relics. Franciscan friars in one of Glasgow's most deprived areas insist they were asked in 1868 to look after the remains by a French family who owned other religious relics. The relics spent more than a century in a side aisle of St Francis' Church, Glasgow, and in recent years were kept in a wooden casket in a cardboard box, on a wardrobe in a nearby chapel house. They were recently moved to the church of Blessed St John Duns Scotus in the Gorbals and were put on display for a special Valentine's service in a bid to bring a little romance to the Scottish city. However, the Scottish ceremony did not find favour across the Irish Sea where the remains of St Valentine are said to repose in a casket at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. The Irish say they were passed on as a gift from Pope Gregory XVI to the respected Dublin Carmelite, Father John Spratt. Whatever the truth of the matter, it is unlikely that the confusion will not detract from the true message of the saint's day.

Lookit Cookit I
T DOESN'T TAKE you long to realise that Judy Jackson's attempt at getting kids interacting with food has a very different approach to other cook books. In fact, one look at the 'Un-contents' alone (a list of what isn't in the book) will suffice: • No long recipes or lists of ingredients you don't have • No mention of eating five-a-day or hiding vegetables in a sauce. Fruit and the green things are not to be taken like medicine, before you're allowed dessert • No instructions for making Chocolate Rice Krispies — if you want to get messy fingers there are more exciting things to cook — like Sticky Chicken Wings or Blueberry Pancakes. With that in mind, it's probably best to focus on what Lookit Cookit does offer, which is plenty. Jackson, a food writer herself, has compiled over 25 kitchen games, 130 photos and innumerable hours of research to deliver a publication that aims to do two key things: encourage children to enter the kitchen, and get them interested in food. Not least, what goes into a dish and why those elements may appeal to their palate. The idea presumably being that when people are more aware of what it is they are eating, their diets usually reflect this with a focus on healthier options. Given the ongoing problems Britain faces thanks to its decidedly unhealthy youngsters, and the constant relationship between edibles deemed to be "fun"
and junk, it was only really a matter of time until someone came along with an idea like this. So by developing these unique tasks and challenges, which are in themselves recipes, the author has created a somewhat psychological road map to instilling good eating habits in our little ones. Rather than simply being a case of explaining which ingredients need to be mixed in order to serve up a dish, instead they are given an insight into why flavours are the way they taste, various methods of cooking, and how a healthy, mixed diet can be delicious, exciting and doesn't need to involve parental tricks. Thus appealing to their desire for independence. Each "game" comes with a star rating, making it easy to work out the age a child should be in order to take it on. The selection offered ranges from the simplest tasks to preparing an entire three course meal, the latter best reserved for older youngsters. The final tasting, then, is an addition to the culinary bookshelf that families are likely to revisit time and time again, making for both a worthwhile investment in advance of inevitable rainy days to come, and a shrewd purchase on the part of anyone that wants their kids to understand that they are what they eat. Lookit Cookit, by Judy Jackson, is available from Amazon priced at £9.95: http://bit.ly/lookit-cookit
